Pilot Symbol Aided Channel Estimation for OCDM Transmissions

Pilot-aided channel estimation allows the receiver to acquire channel state information (CSI) for each multicarrier block by multiplexing data and pilot symbols in the same block, as long as they can be decoupled. This work proposes several frequency-domain pilot multiplexing techniques to enable independent channel estimation and detection at the receiver for orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) transmissions in frequency-selective channels. Analysis shows that each of the proposed schemes is able to achieve the mean squared error (MSE) lower bound for channel estimation and has greater spectral efficiency than the existing schemes for OCDM and chirp spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).

An efficient pilot-symbol-aided and decision-directed hybrid channel estimation technique in OFDM systems

The Channel estimation in Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications is critical due to the time-varying characteristics of the V2V channel. Hence, the authors propose a hybrid approach towards channel estimation by combining Pilot Symbol Aided Channel Estimation (PSACE), Improved Crow Search Algorithm (ICSA), and Decision Directed Channel Estimation (DDCE) by employing Weight Regularized Convolutional Neural Network (WCNN). Hybrid channel estimation by combining the properties of PSACE and DDCE. PSACE suffers from pilot overhead issue due to the demand of huge number of pilots for channel estimation. On the other hand, DDCE suffers from error propagation in fast fading environments. The proposed system employs an ICSA and WCNN to overcome the issues faced by channel estimation methods. Further, the proposed strategy replaces the analytical modeling of the channel with the help of the neural network. Optimized pilots obtained from ICSA along with data symbols are fed to WCNN to estimate the channel in a non-stationary environment. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated in terms of Bit Error Rate, Mean Square Error, and Packet Error Rate and the simulations are carried out under various V2V scenarios for testing its sturdiness.

Channel estimation for OFDM-IM systems

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) has been recently proposed to increase the spectral efficiency and improve the error performance of multicarrier communication systems. However, all the OFDM-IM systems assume that the perfect channel state information is available at the receiver. Nevertheless, channel estimation is a challenging problem in practical wireless communication systems for coherent detection at the receiver. In this paper, a novel method based on the pilot symbol-aided channel estimation technique is proposed and evaluated for OFDM-IM systems. Pilot symbols, which are placed equidistantly, allow the regeneration of the response of the channel so that pilot symbol spacing can fulfill the sampling theorem criterion. Our results shows that the low-pass interpolation and SPLINE techniques perform the best among all the channel estimation algorithms in terms of bit error rate and mean square error performance.

A Game Theoretic Approach to Uplink Pilot and Data Power Control in Multi-Cell Multi-User MIMO Systems

In multi-user multiple-input–multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems that employ pilot-symbol aided channel estimation, the pilot-to-data power ratio (PDPR) has a large impact on the system performance. In this paper, we consider the problem of setting the PDPR in multi-cell MU-MIMO systems in the presence of channel estimation errors, intercell interference and pilot contamination. To analyze and address this problem, we first develop a model of the multi-cell MU-MIMO system and derive a closed-form expression for the mean squared error of the uplink received data symbols. Building on this result, we then propose two decentralized PDPR-setting algorithms based on game theoretic approaches that are applicable in multi-cell systems. We find that both algorithms converge to a Nash equilibrium and provide performance improvements over systems that do not properly set the PDPR, while they maintain different levels of fairness.

Pilot Symbol Aided Channel Estimation for Spatial Modulation-OFDM Systems and its Performance Analysis with Different Types of Interpolations

Spatial modulation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SM-OFDM) system has been recently proposed as an alternative for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-OFDM systems to increase spectral efficiency by keeping a low-complexity implementation. In the literature, SM-OFDM systems assume a perfect channel state information (P-CSI) available at the receiver for coherent detection and the channel estimation problem is not considered. It is clear that the channel estimation is a critical issue on the performance of SM-OFDM systems. In this paper, a frame structure where pilot symbols are typically interspersed with data symbols among the sub-carriers to aid the channel estimation is considered. Then the pilot symbol aided channel estimation (PSA-CE) technique with different interpolations is proposed for the SM-OFDM systems. It is shown that in the proposed PSA-CE, equidistantly spaced pilot symbols allow to reconstruct the channel response by means of interpolation if the spacing of the pilots is sufficiently close to satisfy the sampling theorem. Linear, nearest neighbor, piecewise cubic Hermite and the low-pass interpolations are investigated to explore trade-off between complexity and performances. We show that the low pass interpolator yields better performance than the other interpolation techniques for selected cases such as higher order modulations. The results validate the potential of the proposed PSA-CE estimation applying to SM-OFDM systems.

On the Impact of Antenna Correlation and CSI Errors on the Pilot-to-Data Power Ratio

In systems employing pilot-symbol aided channel estimation, the pilot-to-data power ratio is known to have a large impact on performance. Therefore, previous works proposed methods setting the pilot power such that either the weighted sum of the mean squared error (MSE) of the estimated data symbols is minimized or the overall spectral efficiency (SE) is maximized. However, previous works did not take into account the impact of correlated antennas and channel state information (CSI) errors on the optimal pilot power setting. In this paper, we consider the uplink of a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU MIMO) system employing a receiver that minimizes the MSE of the received data symbols in the presence of CSI errors and derive closed-form expressions for the MSE and the achievable SE. These expressions take into account the impact of antenna correlation and CSI errors, and are a function of pilot power and the number of receive antennas. The analytical and numerical results can help set the pilot power, minimizing the MSE in multiple antenna systems.

Joint Preprocesser-Based Detector for Cooperative Networks with Limited Hardware Processing Capability

In this letter, a joint detector for cooperative communication networks is proposed when the destination has limited hardware processing capability. The transmitter sends its symbols with the help of L relays. As the destination has limited hardware, only U out of L signals are processed and the energy of the remaining relays is lost. To solve this problem, a joint preprocessing based detector is proposed. This joint preprocessor based detector operate on the principles of minimizing the symbol error rate (SER). For a realistic assessment, pilot symbol aided channel estimation is incorporated for this proposed detector. From our simulations, it can be observed that our proposed detector achieves the same SER performance as that of the maximum likelihood (ML) detector with all participating relays. Additionally, our detector outperforms selection combining (SC), channel shortening (CS) scheme and reduced-rank techniques when using the same U. Our proposed scheme has low computational complexity.

Performance comparison of Different Pilot Aided Channel Estimation Techniques for OFDM IEEE 802. 11e (Mobile Wimax) Systems

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation is a promising technique for achieving the high bit rates required for a wireless multimedia service. In this paper we present different channel estimation algorithms for OFDM mobile communication systems based on the use of pilot subcarriers. Specifically we present LS (Least Square), MMSE (Minimum Mean Square Error) and LMS iterative channel estimation techniques to show the performance comparison of channel estimation techniques supported by n IFFT-based time channel estimation. The channel estimation is based on the principle of pilotsymbol aided channel estimation (PACE), and it has been implemented using block-type pilot subcarrier arrangements. The low complexity of LMS algorithm, has a higher efficiency than conventional methods (without channel estimation, LS& LMMSE) and it can work in lower amount of SNRs. We have compared the performances of all schemes by measuring bit error rate with 16QAM as modulation scheme, and multi-path Rayleigh fading channel as channel model. Simulation results validate that the LMS Iterative channel estimation scheme can achieve tremendous performance as the existing channel estimation methods. Interleaver Structures for Channel Estimation and Decoding on the Frequency Selective Fading Channel

This paper examines different designs for combined channel estimation and decoding for a point to point time varying frequency selective fading channel. The channel state information (CSI) is not known a priori at either the transmitter or the receiver. Channel estimation is performed through a combination of conventional pilots and manufactured pilots from previously decoded data. The paper examines how different interleaver structures affect the tradeoff between achievable rates, delay and complexity. When there is no delay constraint at all, the conventional pilots can be eliminated completely and a proper interleaving scheme can convert half the symbols into manufactured pilots. When there is a delay constraint, the paper explores various interleaver structures that combine the conventional pilots with the manufactured pilots in different ways to get much better achievable rates than conventional pilot-symbol aided channel estimation.

Recursive Channel Estimation Method for OFDM-Based Cooperative Systems

In this letter, we propose a recursive channel estimation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) over amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying channels. Among pilot-symbol aided channel estimation techniques, linear interpolation is considered to be a simple and practical method. However, linear interpolation for the source-relay-destination channel may not work well due to the severe frequency selectivity of the cascaded channels. Specifically, extrapolation for edge subcarriers significantly distorts the channel estimation performance. To mitigate the detrimental effects of extrapolation, we partially null the channel estimates at the edge subcarriers. The proposed method effectively reduces the error propagation due to inaccurate channel estimates. In addition, we design a low complexity recursive linear interpolation scheme in which each update process utilizes both the reliability of feedback information and the characteristics of linear interpolation.

A Higher Data-Rate T-DMB System Based on a Hierarchical A-DPSK Modulation

Hierarchical modulation can be effectively used to enhance terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) or digital audio broadcasting (DAB) systems in response to both the demand for higher data-rate and the need to be backward compatible with legacy receivers. QAM-type modulations are well-liked for hierarchical transmission but require coherent detection based on pilot symbol aided channel estimation. In the T-DMB or the DAB system using DQPSK modulation, however, any available pilot symbols except for the phase reference symbol do not exist. Differential amplitude phase shift keying (DAPSK) modulation is easily applied to the T-DMB system for a hierarchical modulation but may be susceptible to fast fading. As a good candidate for a hierarchical modulation of T-DMB to solve the above problems, we propose an amplitude differential phase shift keying (A-DPSK) modulation which is robust to fast fading by estimating only amplitude coefficients of the channel transfer function with the use of amplitude pilots. To raise the accuracy of channel estimation, we arrange the amplitude pilots in a come-type and introduce a noise-reduction scheme of averaging estimated channel coefficients. Simulation results show that the proposed A-DPSK provides a good choice for achieving a higher data-rate over other possible modulation schemes for advanced T-DMB or DAB systems.

Channel Estimation for Amplify and Forward Relay Based Cooperation Diversity Systems

Cooperation diversity schemes have been proposed for cellular networks that permit a base station (or a mobile station) to relay signals to a destination receiver, thereby increasing the network coverage and reliability. The mobile relays either decode and forward (DF) or amplify and forward (AF) the received signal. Most existing analyses of cooperation diversity assumes perfect channel information at the receiver. A realistic assessment should consider the effects of practical channel estimation schemes. This paper considers pilot symbol aided channel estimation for cooperation diversity systems. Since the overall channel in AF systems is different from conventional cellular channels, the channel estimation problem is interesting and challenging and therefore our focus is on AF systems. The paper addresses issues such as the estimator design, pilot symbol spacing based upon realistic channel models, and an approximate bit error rate (BER) analysis that accounts for imperfect channel estimation.

A Wavelets Network Interpolation Algorithm for OFDM Channel Estimation Systems

For the performance deficiency of the pilot symbol aided channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, the wavelets network interpolation channel estimator is proposed. By contrast with conventional methods, wavelets network interpolation channel estimator can guarantee the high transmission rate and lower Bit error rates (BER). Computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed channel estimation method exhibit an improved performance compared to the conventional linear channel estimation methods and is robust to fading rate, especially in fast fading channels.

A Channel Estimation Method for a Highly Mobile OFDM Wireless Access System

Pilot-symbol-aided (PSA) channel estimation for OFDM wireless access systems enables the periodic estimation of channel frequency response by generating reference data from the received OFDM signals. The accuracy of this channel estimation can be improved through the average over a certain time period in each subcarrier-channel. However, the accuracy of the channel estimates by the average degrades as the Doppler shift is large due to a decrease in the average section size according to the Doppler shift for the tracking of the time-varying channel. This paper proposes a novel PSA channel estimation method to mitigate the influence of the noises and interferences. This method detects the channel estimates affected by the noises and interferences, and then removes them before the arithmetic or harmonic averaging to avoid propagating the influence of the noises and interferences. This paper also evaluated the proposed channel estimation method by clipping log-likelihood ratio (LLR) data to inspect the influence of the channel estimation on the LLR calculation by computer simulation.

Stochastic channel-adaptive rate control for wireless video transmission

In this paper, an empirically optimized channel-matched quantizer, and a joint stochastic-control based rate controller and channel estimator for H.261 based video transmission over a noisy channel is proposed. The rate controller adaptively learns to choose the correct channel matched quantizer using a stochastic learning algorithm. The stochastic automaton based learning algorithm aids in estimating the channel bit error rate based on a one bit feedback from the decoder. The algorithm is observed to converge to the optimal choice of the quantizer very quickly for various channel bit error probabilities and for different video sequences. When compared to traditional channel estimation schemes the proposed technique has several advantages. First, the proposed method results in a significant reduction in the delay and bandwidth requirement for channel estimation when compared to pilot symbol aided channel estimation schemes. Next, the stochastic learning algorithm used to estimate the channel bit error rate has simple computations. This makes it attractive for low power applications such as wireless video communications. This is in contrast to traditional blind channel estimation schemes that are computationally expensive, in general.

Pilot-symbol aided channel estimation for ofdm with fast fading channels

In this paper, we address the problem of estimating a rapidly-varying channel in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. To handle rapid variation within a transmission block, we propose a novel pilot-based estimation scheme which uses channel interpolation. In addition, we develop a simple Doppler frequency estimation scheme. We show that the proposed scheme has better performance in the high-Doppler frequency by simulations.

Optimally combining decision-directed and pilot-symbol-aided channel estimators

There are two different types of channel estimation methods: decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE) and pilot-symbol-aided channel estimation (PSACE). A new type of channel estimation method is proposed in which DDCE and PSACE are optimally combined based on estimated symbol error rate and signal-to-noise ratio.

SS-MC-MA Systems with Pilot Symbol Aided Channel Estimation in the Asynchronous Uplink

Spread spectrum multi-carrier multiple access (SS-MC-MA) systems exploit in a similar manner as MC-CDMA systems the advantages of the diversity gain due to the spread spectrum technique and the high bandwidth efficiency due to the orthogonal multi-carrier modulation. However, the main difference is that SS-MC-MA systems use FDMA for the user separation and therefore are less vulnerable to multiple access interference, and thus are especially of interest for the uplink of mobile radio systems. They allow asynchronism between the mobile users. In this paper we investigate the effects of ISI and ICI due to asynchronism in the uplink of an SS-MC-MA system on the performance of pilot symbol aided channel estimation. Moreover, we consider the suitability of power boosting of the pilot symbols to improve the link performance.

Combination performance of truncated decorrelator and coherent RAKE receiver for DS-CDMA

The combination performance of a truncated decorrelator and a coherent RAKE receiver using pilot symbol-aided channel estimation is evaluated by computer simulation for DS-CDMA in several multipath fading environments. Computer simulation results show that the proposed truncated decorrelator can, within a window of several symbols, improve the bit error rate (BER) performances compared to the conventional matched filter receiver in fast Rayleigh fading environments.

Pilot symbol aided coherent decorrelating detector for up-link CDMA mobile radio communication

A new decorrelating arrangement for asynchronous up-link direct sequence code division multiple access communication, which employs coherent detection with pilot symbol aided channel estimation, is proposed. The proposed coherent scheme improves the bit error rate (BER) and exhibits no error floor compared to the previous noncoherent schemes. The BER performance for BPSK is obtained by simulations over a frequency-nonselective Rayleigh fading channel.
