Comparison of Oceansat-2 Scatterometer Wind Data with Global Moored Buoys and ASCAT Observation

The Oceansat-2 satellite was launched on 23 September 2009 by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). In this study, the historic archived OSCAT wind vectors are compared with the global moored buoys’ wind observations, including the U.S. National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO), the Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA), the Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA), and Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) wind data in the same period of OSCAT by calculating the statistical parameters, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), bias (mean of residuals), and correlation coefficient (R) between the collocated data. The comparisons with the global moored buoys show that the OSCAT wind vectors are consistent with buoys’ wind measurements. The average errors of the OSCAT wind vectors are 1.20 m/s and 17.7°. The analysis of the OSCAT wind vector errors at different buoy wind speeds in bins of 1 m/s indicates that the accuracy of the OSCAT wind speed first increases and then decreases with the increasing wind speed. The comparisons of OSCAT wind vectors and ASCAT wind vectors show that the average RMSEs of their differences are 1.27 m/s and 20.17°. In general, the accuracies of the OSCAT wind vectors satisfy the general scatterometer’s mission requirement and are consistent with ASCAT wind data. OSCAT wind vectors can be used in the global change study by the combination with other scatterometer data.

Evaluation of ISS-RapidScat Wind Vectors Using Buoys and ASCAT Data

The International Space Station scatterometer (named ISS-RapidScat) was launched by NASA on 20 September 2014 as a continuation of the QuikSCAT climate data record to maintain the availability of Ku-band scatterometer data after the QuikSCAT missions ended. In this study, the overall archived ISS-RapidScat wind vectors in the wind speed range of 0–24 m/s are evaluated by the global moored buoys’ wind observations, including the U.S. National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO), and the Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA), the Research Moored Array for African–Asian–Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA), and Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) wind data in the same period of ISS-RapidScat by calculating the statistical parameters, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), bias (mean of residuals), and correlation coefficient (R) between the collocated data. The comparisons with the global moored buoys show that the RapidScat wind vectors are consistent with buoys’ wind measurements. The average errors of the RapidScat wind vectors are 1.42 m/s and 19.5°. The analysis of the RapidScat wind vector errors at different buoy wind speeds in bins of 1 m/s indicates that the errors of the RapidScat wind speed reduce firstly, and then increase with the increasing buoy wind speed, and the errors of the RapidScat wind direction decrease with increasing buoy wind speed. The comparisons of the errors of the RapidScat wind speed and direction at different months from April 2015 to August 2016 show that the accuracies of the RapidScat wind vectors have no dependence on the time, and the biases of the RapidScat wind speed indicate that there is an annual periodic signal of wind speed errors which are due to the annual cycle variation of ocean winds. The accuracies of the RapidScat wind vectors at different times in one day are also analyzed and the results show that the accuracy of the RapidScat wind vectors at different times of the day is basically consistent and with no diurnal variation. In order to evaluate the ISS-RapidScat wind vectors of the global oceans, the differences (RapidScat-ASCAT) in the wind speed range of 0–30 m/s are analyzed in the different months from October 2014 to August 2016, and the average RMSEs of differences between ISS-RapidScat and ASCAT wind vectors are less than 1.15 m/s and 15.21°. In general, the evaluation of the all-over archived ISS-RapidScat wind vectors show that the accuracies of the ISS-RapidScat wind vectors satisfy the general scatterometer’s mission requirement and are consistent with ASCAT wind data.

Modeling shortwave radiative fluxes from satellites

During the last two decades, significant progress has been made in assessing the Earth Radiation Balance from satellite observations. Yet, satellite based estimates differ from each other and from those provided by numerical models. Major issues are related to quality of satellite observations, such as the frequent changes in satellite observing systems, degradation of sensors, restricted spectral intervals and viewing geometry of sensors, and changes in the quality of atmospheric inputs that drive the inference schemes. To reduce differences among the satellite based estimates requires, among others, updates to inference schemes so that most recent auxiliary information can be fully utilized. This paper reports on improvements introduced to a methodology developed at the University of Maryland to estimate shortwave (SW) radiative fluxes within the atmosphere system from satellite observations, the implementation of the approach with newly available auxiliary information, evaluation of the downwelling SW flux against ground observations, and comparison with independent satellite methods and numerical models. Specifically, introduced are: new Narrow to Broadband (N/B) transformations and new Angular Distribution Models (ADM) for clear and cloudy sky that incorporate most recent land use classifications; improved aerosol treatment; separation of clouds by phase; improved sun‐earth geometry; and implementation at 0.5° spatial resolution at 3‐hourly intervals integrated to daily and monthly time scales. When compared to an earlier version of the model as implemented at 2.5° at global scale and against observations from the globally distributed Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) stations for a period of six years (at monthly time scale), the bias was reduced from 8.6 (4.6%) to −0.5 (0.3%) W/m2, the standard deviation from 16.6 (8.9%) to 14.5 (7.8%) W/m2while the correlation remained high at 0.98 in both cases. Evaluation was also done over oceanic sites as available from the Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) moorings and from the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean/Triangle Trans‐Ocean Buoy Network (TAO/TRITON) moorings in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Overall, results over oceans were not as good as over land for all the satellite retrievals compared in this study.

THE PIRATA PROGRAM

The Pilot Research Moored Array in the tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) was developed as a multinational observation network to improve our knowledge and understanding of ocean-atmosphere variability in the tropical Atlantic. PIRATA was motivated by fundamental scientific issues and by societal needs for improved prediction of climate variability and its impact on the economies of West Africa, northeastern Brazil, the West Indies, and the United States. In this paper the implementation of this network is described, noteworthy accomplishments are highlighted, and the future of PIRATA in the framework of a sustainable tropical Atlantic observing system is discussed. We demonstrate that PIRATA has advanced beyond a “Pilot” program and, as such, we have redefined the PIRATA acronym to be “Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic.”

Dynamics of Intraseasonal Sea Level and Thermocline Variability in the Equatorial Atlantic during 2002–03

Abstract Satellite and in situ observations in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean during 2002–03 show dominant spectral peaks at 40–60 days and secondary peaks at 10–40 days in sea level and thermocline within the intraseasonal period band (10–80 days). A detailed investigation of the dynamics of the intraseasonal variations is carried out using an ocean general circulation model, namely, the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Two parallel experiments are performed in the tropical Atlantic Ocean basin for the period 2000–03: one is forced by daily scatterometer winds from the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) satellite together with other forcing fields, and the other is forced by the low-passed 80-day version of the above fields. To help in understanding the role played by the wind-driven equatorial waves, a linear continuously stratified ocean model is also used. Within 3°S–3°N of the equatorial region, the strong 40–60-day sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) and thermocline variability result mainly from the first and second baroclinic modes equatorial Kelvin waves that are forced by intraseasonal zonal winds, with the second baroclinic mode playing a more important role. Sharp 40–50-day peaks of zonal and meridional winds appear in both the QuikSCAT and Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) data for the period 2002–03, and they are especially strong in 2002. Zonal wind anomaly in the central-western equatorial basin for the period 2000–06 is significantly correlated with SSHA across the equatorial basin, with simultaneous/lag correlation ranging from −0.62 to 0.74 above 95% significance. Away from the equator (3°–5°N), however, sea level and thermocline variations in the 40–60-day band are caused largely by tropical instability waves (TIWs). On 10–40-day time scales and west of 10°W, the spectral power of sea level and thermocline appears to be dominated by TIWs within 5°S–5°N of the equatorial region. The wind-driven circulation, however, also provides a significant contribution. Interestingly, east of 10°W, SSHA and thermocline variations at 10–40-day periods result almost entirely from wind-driven equatorial waves. During the boreal spring of 2002 when TIWs are weak, Kelvin waves dominate the SSHA across the equatorial basin (2°S–2°N). The observed quasi-biweekly Yanai waves are excited mainly by the quasi-biweekly meridional winds, and they contribute significantly to the SSHA and thermocline variations in 1°–5°N and 1°–5°S regions.

Influence of salinity on the interannual heat storage trends in the Atlantic estimated from altimeters and Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic data

Changes in the oceanic heat storage (HS) can reveal important evidences of climate variability related to ocean heat fluxes. Specifically, long‐term variations in HS are a powerful indicator of climate change as HS represents the balance between the net surface energy flux and the poleward heat transported by the ocean currents. HS is estimated from sea surface height anomaly measured from the altimeters TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason 1 from 1993 to 2006. To characterize and validate the altimeter‐based HS in the Atlantic, we used the data from the Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) array. Correlations and rms differences are used as statistical figures of merit to compare the HS estimates. The correlations range from 0.50 to 0.87 in the buoys located at the equator and at the southern part of the array. In that region the rms differences range between 0.40 and 0.51 × 109 Jm−2. These results are encouraging and indicate that the altimeter has the precision necessary to capture the interannual trends in HS in the Atlantic. Albeit relatively small, salinity changes can also have an effect on the sea surface height anomaly. To account for this effect, NCEP/GODAS reanalysis data are used to estimate the haline contraction. To understand which dynamical processes are involved in the HS variability, the total signal is decomposed into nonpropagating basin‐scale and seasonal (HSl) planetary waves, mesoscale eddies, and small‐scale residual components. In general, HSl is the dominant signal in the tropical region. Results show a warming trend of HSl in the past 13 years almost all over the Atlantic basin with the most prominent slopes found at high latitudes. Positive interannual trends are found in the halosteric component at high latitudes of the South Atlantic and near the Labrador Sea. This could be an indication that the salinity anomaly increased in the upper layers during this period. The dynamics of the South Atlantic subtropical gyre could also be subject to low‐frequency changes caused by a trend in the halosteric component on each side of the South Atlantic Current.

Variability of fCO2 in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic from a moored buoy

A fCO2 sensor, based on a colorimetric method used for the CARIOCA buoys, has been installed on a Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) mooring at 6°S, 10°W, in the gulf of Guinea, in June 2006 during the EGEE 3 cruise. Hourly fCO2 data recorded from June to December 2006 are presented. An alkalinity‐salinity relationship has been determined using data from different cruises, which allows the calculation of dissolved inorganic carbon. Although the tropical Atlantic is an important source of CO2, an unexpected area of low CO2 concentrations is observed in the South Equatorial Counter Current with fCO2 values close to equilibrium conditions or even slightly undersaturated with respect to the atmospheric fCO2 value of 367.7 μatm measured during the cruise. At the end of June, an increase of seawater fCO2 to 400 μatm is consistent with the beginning of the upwelling season occurring from July to September. Although the mooring is not located within the upwelling area, the spreading of the cold tongue explains the large CO2 outgassing. The monthly CO2 flux ranges from 1.19 mmol m−2 d−1 in June to a maximum of 8.37 mmol m−2 d−1 in October, when high fCO2 values above 420 μatm are maintained by the warming of surface water. Most of the fCO2 distribution can be explained by physical processes and a strong relationship between fCO2 and SST is determined for the upwelling season. From mid‐September, diurnal cycles can be detected. Using a dissolved inorganic carbon budget, periods where net community production or diurnal warming and cooling dominates are observed.

Variability of Tropical Diurnal Sea Surface Temperature*

Abstract A dataset consisting of daily diurnal warming values from 1996 through 2000 covering the global Tropics (30°N through 30°S) at 0.25° × 0.25° resolution has been created using a parameterization for the diurnal warming developed previously. The inputs to the parameterization are the peak shortwave solar radiation [determined from International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) data] and daily averaged wind speed [determined from Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data]. Comparisons with Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) and Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) buoys show that the biases are small (mean bias is 0.0012°C; the standard deviation and correlation are 0.26°C and 0.74) and show no discernable geographic bias. The 5-yr average shows that throughout most regions the values are small, with higher values (approaching 1°C) in the northern Indian Ocean, the western equatorial Pacific, the equatorial eastern Pacific, and several coastal regions. An EOF analysis of the variability indicates that seasonal variability is the most dominant form for each of the basins; in the Atlantic and Pacific basins it is north–south following the solar cycle. In the Indian Ocean the seasonal cycle is dominated by monsoonal variability; both the northern and southern portions of the basin have above-mean or below-mean values at the same times. Seasonal shortwave variability is responsible for the second mode in the Indian Ocean. East–west dipole weight structures appear in the spatial patterns for mode 2 in the Pacific and mode 3 for the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These modes also display seasonally varying characteristics, with late 1997 and early 1998 being somewhat anomalous in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Tropical instability waves at 0°N, 23°W in the Atlantic: A case study using Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) mooring data

Temperature, salinity, velocity, and wind from a mooring at 0°N, 23°W are used along with satellite data for sea surface temperature and sea level to examine the contribution of tropical instability waves (TIWs) to the energy and heat balance of the equatorial Atlantic mixed layer. The TIWs appear as periodic 20–30 day fluctuations of currents, temperature, and salinity, which intensify beginning in June and peak in late boreal summer. The intensification occurs in phase with strengthening of the southeasterly trade winds and the seasonal appearance of the equatorial tongue of cold mixed layer temperatures. In 2002 these waves, which warm the mixed layer by 0.35°C during summer months, are maintained by both barotropic and baroclinic conversions that are of comparable size. Salinity fluctuations, previously neglected, increase the magnitude of baroclinic energy conversion.

Tropical Atlantic Moisture Flux, Convection over Northeastern Brazil, and Pertinence of the PIRATA Network*

Abstract This study aims to examine the relationship between the tropical Atlantic latent heat flux and convective cloud coverage over northeast Brazil (NEB) during the four months of the main rainy season (February–May). The correlation with anomalies of these data is investigated, both without lag and with a 1-month lag (the heat flux in advance). In both cases, a significant positive correlation appears in the northwestern tropical Atlantic, and a significant negative correlation is obtained for a limited area off eastern NEB. These two correlation patterns are linked to anomalies in the trade wind intensity and in the meridional position of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), which relate to the latent heat flux anomalies and NEB convective coverage anomalies, respectively. The positive correlation pattern is spread over a large part of the northern tropical Atlantic, whereas the negative correlation pattern is confined off NEB. This indicates the existence of different regional mechanisms in the tropical Atlantic basin. The impact of the Atlantic heat fluxes on NEB convection is somewhat different from the classical meridional dipole related to the SST variability. The analysis of the horizontal moisture flux shows that during flood years an additional meridional inflow balances the eastward loss, and the upward velocity reinforced over NEB contributes to intensify NEB convection. The positive correlation pattern indicates that the location of the northern branch of the Pilot Research moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) moorings is pertinent to monitor the ocean–atmosphere interface parameters. The negative correlation pattern off NEB provides new support for the possible extension of the PIRATA array toward the Brazilian coast. Complementary results at 1-month lag and the real-time availability of the PIRATA data confirm the potential of NEB forecasting.

Mean and Variability of the WHOI Daily Latent and Sensible Heat Fluxes at In Situ Flux Measurement Sites in the Atlantic Ocean*

Daily latent and sensible heat fluxes for the Atlantic Ocean from 1988 to 1999 with 1° × 1° resolution have been recently developed at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) by using a variational object analysis approach. The present study evaluated the degree of improvement made by the WHOI analysis using in situ buoy/ship measurements as verification data. The measurements were taken from the following field experiments: the five-buoy Subduction Experiment in the eastern subtropical North Atlantic, three coastal field programs in the western Atlantic, two winter cruises by R/V Knorr from the Labrador Sea Deep Convection Experiment, and the Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA). The differences between the observed and the WHOI-analyzed fluxes and surface meteorological variables were quantified. Comparisons with the outputs from two numerical weather prediction (NWP) models were also conducted. The mean and daily variability of the latent and sensible heat fluxes from the WHOI analysis are an improvement over the NWP fluxes at all of the measurement sites. The improved flux representation is due to the use of not only a better flux algorithm but also the improved estimates for flux-related variables. The mean differences from the observations in latent heat flux and sensible heat flux, respectively, range from 2.9 (3% of the corresponding mean measurement value) and 1.0 W m−2 (13%) at the Subduction Experiment site, to 11.9 (13%) and 0.7 W m−2 (11%) across the PIRATA array, to 15.9 (20%) and 10.5 W m−2 (34%) at the coastal buoy sites, to 8.7 (7%) and 9.7 W m−2 (6%) along the Knorr cruise tracks. The study also suggests that further improvement in the accuracy of latent and sensible heat fluxes will depend on the availability of high-quality SST observations and improved representation/observations of air humidity in the tropical Atlantic.

In situ validation of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission microwave sea surface temperatures

We present a validation study of sea surface temperature (SST) retrievals from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI). TMI SSTs are calculated using a radiative transfer‐based retrieval algorithm, which precisely accounts for SST and wind effects on surface emissivity as well as atmospheric effects on brightness temperatures. TMI SSTs are compared to 4 years of the National Data Buoy Center, Tropical Atmosphere Ocean/Triangle Trans‐Ocean Buoy Network (TAO/TRITON), and Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) moored buoy in situ SSTs. The microwave SSTs are shown to have a mean bias of −0.07°C and a standard deviation of 0.57°C when compared to the TAO/TRITON and PIRATA SSTs. A discussion of time series and dependencies of the accuracy of the TMI SSTs in the presence of varying wind, cloud, and water vapor for each of the buoy arrays is presented. TRMM's precessing equatorial orbit allows the diurnal variability to be determined, revealing midafternoon warming of the surface layer at wind speeds less than 6 m s−1. Low‐wind TAO/TRITON collocations show diurnal warming in both the TMI and buoy retrievals, with TMI's diurnal peak larger and 1 hour before the buoy peak. This decoupling of the skin‐bulk SSTs results in larger standard deviations for daytime low‐wind situations. This result has direct implications for future in situ validation studies, in situ‐based regression algorithms, and future blended infrared/microwave/in situ SST products.

Multiple Time- and Space-Scale Comparisons of ATLAS Buoy Rain Gauge Measurements with TRMM Satellite Precipitation Measurements*

Abstract This study compares the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) microwave imager (TMI) and precipitation radar (PR) rainfall measurements to self-siphoning rain gauge data from 14 open-ocean buoys located in heavy-rain areas of the tropical Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. These 14 buoys are part of the Tropical Atmosphere–Ocean (TAO) array and Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA). Differences between buoy and TRMM monthly and seasonal rainfall accumulations are calculated from satellite data within 0.1° × 0.1°–5.0° × 5.0° square areas centered on the buoys. Taking into account current best estimates of sampling and instrumental errors, mean differences between the buoy and TMI rainfall are not significant at the 95% confidence level, assuming no wind-induced undercatch by the buoy gauges. Evaluation of Wind Vectors Observed by QuikSCAT/SeaWinds Using Ocean Buoy Data

Wind vectors observed by the QuikSCAT/SeaWinds satellite mission are validated by comparing with wind and wave data from ocean buoys. Effects of oceanographic and atmospheric environment on scatterometer measurements are also assessed using the buoy data. Three versions of QuikSCAT/SeaWinds wind data were collocated with buoy observations operated by the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO), and Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) projects, and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Only buoys located offshore and in deep water were analyzed. The temporal and spatial differences between the QuikSCAT/SeaWinds and buoy observations were limited to less than 30 min and 25 km. The buoy wind speeds were converted to equivalent neutral winds at a height of 10 m above the sea surface. The comparisons show that the wind speeds and directions observed by QuikSCAT/SeaWinds agree well with the buoy data. The root-mean-squared differences of the wind speed and direction for the standard wind data products are 1.01 m s - 1 and 23°, respectively, while no significant dependencies on the wind speed or cross-track cell location are discernible. Inaddition, the dependencies of wind speed residuals on oceanographic and atmospheric parameters observed by buoys are examined using the collocated data. A weak positive correlation of the wind speed residuals with the significant wave height is found, while dependencies on the sea surface temperature or atmospheric stability are not physically significant.

A Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA)

The tropical Atlantic Ocean is characterized by a large seasonal cycle around which there are climatically significant interannual and decadal timescale variations. The most pronounced of these interannual variations are equatorial warm events, somewhat similar to the El Niño events for the Pacific, and the so-called Atlantic sea surface temperature dipole. Both of these phenomena in turn may be related to El Niño-Southern Oscillation variability in the tropical Pacific and other modes of regional climatic variability in ways that are not yet fully understood. PIRATA (Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic) will address the lack of oceanic and atmospheric data in the tropical Atlantic, which limits our ability to make progress on these important climate issues. The PIRATA array consists of 12 moored Autonomous Temperature Line Acquisition System buoy sites to be occupied during the years 1997–2000 for monitoring the surface variables and upper-ocean thermal structure at key locations in the tropical Atlantic. Meteorological and oceanographical measurements are transmitted via satellite in real time and are available to all interested users in the research or operational communities. The total number of moorings is a compromise between the need to put out a large enough array for a long enough period of time to gain fundamentally new insights into coupled ocean–atmosphere interactions in the region, while at the same time recognizing the practical constraints of resource limitations in terms of funding, ship time, and personnel. Seen as a pilot Global Ocean Observing System/Global Climate Observing System experiment, PIRATA contributes to monitoring the tropical Atlantic in real time and anticipates a comprehensive observing system that could be operational in the region for the 2000s.
