Grazing strategies determine the size composition of phytoplankton in eutrophic lakes

AbstractAlthough the general impacts of zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton communities are clear, we know comparatively less about how specific grazing strategies interact with environmental conditions to shape the size structure of phytoplankton communities. Here, we present a new data‐driven, size‐based model that describes changes in the size composition of lake phytoplankton under various environmental constraints. The model includes an ecological trade‐off emerging from observed allometric relationships between (1) phytoplankton cell size and phytoplankton growth and (2) phytoplankton cell size and zooplankton grazing. In our model, phytoplankton growth is nutrient‐dependent and zooplankton grazing varies according to specific grazing strategies, namely, specialists (targeting a narrow range of the size‐feeding spectrum) vs. generalists (targeting a wide range of the size‐feeding spectrum). Our results indicate that grazing strategies shape the size composition of the phytoplankton community in nutrient‐rich conditions, whereas inorganic nutrient concentrations govern phytoplankton biomass. Under oligotrophic regimes, the phytoplankton community is dominated by small cell sizes and the grazers have little to no impact. Under eutrophic regimes, dominating specialist grazers push phytoplankton towards small cells, whereas dominating generalist grazers push phytoplankton towards large cells. Our work highlights that trait‐based modeling, based on realistic eco‐physiological trade‐offs, represents a valuable tool for disentangling the interactive roles played by nutrient regimes and grazing strategies in determining the size compositions of lake phytoplankton. Ultimately, our study offers a quantitative basis for understanding how communities of lake phytoplankton may reorganize in the future in response to changes in nutrient levels and zooplankton grazing strategies.

Assessing phytoplankton community composition in the Atlantic Ocean from in situ and satellite observations

The Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) program (www.amt-uk.org) provides the perfect opportunity to observe the phytoplankton community size structure over a long latitudinal transect 50oN to 50oS, thereby covering the most important latitude-related basin-scale environmental gradients of the Atlantic Ocean. This work presents cell abundance data of phytoplankton taxa recently collected during cruises AMT28 and 29 (in 2018 and 2019, respectively) using flow cytometer and microscope observations, as well as the pigment composition of the community, to assess the abundance and spatial distribution of taxonomic groups across the Atlantic. The community size structure showed a clear consistency between cruises at large spatial scale, with a dominance of picoplanktonic Cyanobacteria in oceanic gyres, an increase in all groups in the equatorial upwelling region, and high biomass of microplankton size class at higher latitudes. Phytoplankton carbon biomass for oceanographic provinces, ranged from median values of 10 to 47 mg Carbon m-3, for the oligotrophic gyres, and South Atlantic (45°S-50oS), respectively. Satellite images of total chlorophyll a (as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass) as well as the relative contribution of the three phytoplankton size classes were produced for both cruises, and despite the small number of matchups, statistically agreed well with in situ size classes estimated as carbon biomass, constituting the first attempt in the literature to match satellite size classes with in situ data derived from cell abundance. The comparison of community structure between recent cruises (2019, 2018, 2015) and earlier ones (1995-1998) indicates a decrease in the number of diatom-bloom forming species, and an increase in Dinoflagellates, whereas nitrogen-fixing Trichodesmium abundance in tropical Atlantic remains constant. Within the recent period, a relative increase in the median values of picoplankton fraction was seen in SATL region, counterbalanced by a decrease in both nano- and microplankton fractions. Additionally, this study includes a database of species identified by microscopy, which had been interrupted for 20 years, providing a basis for long-term series of phytoplankton species.

Planktonic prey size selection reveals an emergent keystone predator effect and niche partitioning.

Marine herbivorous protists are often the dominant grazers of primary production. We developed a size-based model with flexible size-based grazing to encapsulate taxonomic and behavioral diversity. We examined individual and combined grazing impacts by three consumer sizes that span the size range of protistan grazers- 5, 50, and 200 μm-on a size-structured phytoplankton community. Prey size choice and dietary niche width varied with consumer size and with co-existence of other consumers. When all consumer sizes were present, distinct dietary niches emerged, with a range of consumer-prey size ratios spanning from 25:1 to 0.4:1, encompassing the canonical 10:1 often assumed. Grazing on all phytoplankton size classes maximized the phytoplankton size diversity through the keystone predator effect, resulting in a phytoplankton spectral slope of approximately -4, agreeing with field data. This mechanistic model suggests the observed size structure of phytoplankton communities is at least in part the result of selective consumer feeding.

Phytoplankton photophysiology varies depending on nitrogen and light availability at the subsurface chlorophyll maximum in the northern Chukchi Sea

Vertical distributions of phytoplankton in the Arctic Ocean are characterized by a very narrow subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer formed every summer after the sea ice retreats. Despite the prevalence of this narrow SCM layer, phytoplankton photosynthetic response to climate change remains to be elucidated. Here, we examined the photophysiological properties of phytoplankton in the SCM layer in the northern Chukchi Sea during the summers of 2015–2018. There was a significant difference in the SCM depth between the northwestern and northeastern Chukchi Sea determined by the distribution of Pacific Summer Water (PSW) around the SCM layer (34 ± 14 m vs. 49 ± 10 m, respectively). The maximum quantum yield of photochemistry in photosystem II (Fv/Fm) in the SCM phytoplankton was high (Fv/Fm ≥ 0.54) and similar in both regions until 2016; however, since then, Fv/Fm in the northeastern Chukchi Sea has decreased by approximately 10%. This decrease was accompanied by a marked decrease in the fraction of microplankton, which are known to be susceptible to nutrient limitation. This result suggests a reduction in nitrogen availability in the SCM layer in the northeastern Chukchi Sea. Meanwhile, the maximum electron transfer rate (ETRmax) did not have a significant relationship with the nitrogen availability and phytoplankton community size structure in the SCM layer; however the improved light conditions (with an approximately two-fold increase in the relative ratio of surface PAR reaching the SCM layer) increased ETRmax by up to 30% in the SCM phytoplankton in the northwestern Chukchi Sea. Therefore, these results provide a better understanding of how changes in nitrogen and light availability could affect phytoplankton photosynthesis and primary production in the Arctic Ocean.

Optimization and assessment of phytoplankton size class algorithms for ocean color data on the Northeast U.S. continental shelf

The size structure of phytoplankton communities influences important ecological and biogeochemical processes, including the transfer of energy through marine food webs. A variety of algorithms have been developed to estimate phytoplankton size classes (PSCs) from satellite ocean color data. However, many of these algorithms were developed for application to the global ocean, and their performance in more productive, optically complex coastal and continental shelf regions warrants evaluation. In this study, several existing PSC models were applied in the Northeast U.S. continental shelf (NES) region and compared with in situ PSC estimates derived from a local HPLC pigment data set. The effect of regional re-parameterization and incorporation of sea surface temperature (SST) into existing abundance-based model frameworks was investigated and model performance was assessed using an independent data set. Abundance-based model re-parameterization alone did not result in significant improvement in model performance compared with other models. However, the inclusion of SST led to a consistent reduction in model error for all size classes. Of two absorption-based algorithms tested, the best performing approach displayed similar performance metrics to the regional SST-dependent abundance-based model. The SST-dependent model and the absorption-based method were applied to monthly composites of the NES region for April and September 2019 and qualitatively compared. The results highlight the benefit of considering SST in abundance-based models and the applicability of absorption-based PSC methods in optically complex regions.

Future phytoplankton diversity in a changing climate

The future response of marine ecosystem diversity to continued anthropogenic forcing is poorly constrained. Phytoplankton are a diverse set of organisms that form the base of the marine ecosystem. Currently, ocean biogeochemistry and ecosystem models used for climate change projections typically include only 2−3 phytoplankton types and are, therefore, too simple to adequately assess the potential for changes in plankton community structure. Here, we analyse a complex ecosystem model with 35 phytoplankton types to evaluate the changes in phytoplankton community composition, turnover and size structure over the 21st century. We find that the rate of turnover in the phytoplankton community becomes faster during this century, that is, the community structure becomes increasingly unstable in response to climate change. Combined with alterations to phytoplankton diversity, our results imply a loss of ecological resilience with likely knock-on effects on the productivity and functioning of the marine environment.

Determinants of phytoplankton size structure in warm, shallow lakes

AbstractBody size is an important trait of any organism, including phytoplankton, because it affects physiological and morphological performance, reproduction, population growth rate and competitive interactions. Understanding how interacting top-down and bottom-up factors influence phytoplankton cell size in different aquatic environments is still a challenge. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a comprehensive multivariate statistical tool for detecting cause–effect relationship among different variables and their hierarchical structure in complex networks (e.g. trophic interactions in ecosystems). Here, several SEM models were employed to investigate the direct and indirect interaction pathways affecting the phytoplankton size structure in 44 mostly eutrophic and hypereutrophic permanent lakes in western Turkey. Among the 15 environmental variables tested, only rotifers and Carlson’s Trophic Index (TSI) had significant direct positive effect on the mean phytoplankton size and size variance, respectively. The results indicate that both bottom-up and top-down factors significantly affect phytoplankton community size structure in eutrophic and hypereutrophic lakes in warm climates. Rotifer grazing increased the abundance of large-sized phytoplankton species, such as filamentous and colonial cyanobacteria and TSI affected phytoplankton size variance, with a higher size variance in hypereutrophic lakes.

Characterization of phytoplankton productivity and bio-optical variability in a polar marine ecosystem

Knowledge of Southern Ocean carbon cycling is limited by a paucity of phytoplankton primary productivity (PP) and spectral absorption data in this globally-important region. We measured 13C-based PP in the Indian sector of Southern Ocean (ISSO) during austral summer 2017, examining its link with spectral absorption coefficients and phytoplankton size structure derived from an absorption-based global model. Phytoplankton productivity was assessed at both coastal (60°S-69°S) and frontal stations (40°S-60°S), characterized by silicate- replete and -deplete water masses, respectively (indicated by measured nutrient ratios) to capture a range of phytoplankton growth conditions. Bio-optical relationships were used as indicators of phytoplankton community size structure and to assess the extent of cellular pigment packaging - a phenomenon reported previously for phytoplankton in this region. Blue-Red (B/R) ratios of phytoplankton absorption (aph) spectra indicated that microphytoplankton (more prone to “package effects”) were the dominant size class at most sites sampled. Overall, PP was better explained by aph (R2 = 0.85) than total chlorophyll-a (R2 = 0.64) in surface waters. The a*ph (675)-chlorophyll-a relationship explained package effects more effectively in frontal regions (R2 = 0.63) than stations further south (R2 = 0.30). The global absorption-based model captured smaller (pico, nano) phytoplankton size classes but failed to identify larger microphytoplankton, underscoring the need for region-specific algorithm modifications. Our findings improve existing understanding of spatio-temporal trends in PP and bio-optical variability within the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean (ISSO) – knowledge that is essential to improve capacity to retrieve PP from satellite-based models in this region.

Effect of Phytoplankton Community Composition and Size Structure on Light Absorption Properties

In the fields of phytoplankton ecology, water optics, and water color remote sensing, phytoplankton absorption properties represent the light absorption capacity of phytoplankton, which affects photosynthesis efficiency and carbon fixation. Here, the biomass, community composition, and the absorption properties of phytoplankton were measured alongside other bio-optical parameters in Lake Tianmu are examined using data collected between January and November 2013 (except February). Based on the relationships between phytoplankton biomass, community composition, and absorption, the effects of abundance, biomass, and equivalent sphere diameter on phytoplankton absorption and specific absorption were revealed. The highest biomass and abundance of phytoplankton were recorded in the autumn and the lowest in the winter. Cryptomonas, Synedra, and Cyclotella were the dominant genera throughout the year. The dominant genera structure type was Bacillariophyta-Cryptophyta in the winter and spring, Bacillariophyta-Chlorophyta-Pyrroptata in the summer, and Cryptophyta-Bacillariophyta-Chlorophyta in the autumn. Phytoplankton diameter was ranked in the order summer>autumn>winter>spring, with mean values of 64.83 μm in summer and 29.54 μm in spring. Phytoplankton absorption coefficients of were ranked in the order autumn > spring > winter > summer, with mean values at 440 nm and 675 nm of (0.66±0.18) m-1 and (0.33±0.10) m-1 in autumn and (0.17±0.02) m-1 and (0.08±0.01) m-1 in summer, respectively. The specific absorption coefficients of the phytoplankton were ranked in the order spring > winter > autumn > summer, with mean values at 440 nm and 675 nm of (0.07±0.02) m2·mg-1 and (0.04±0.01) m2·mg-1 in spring and (0.03±0.004) m2·mg-1 and (0.01±0.002) m2·mg-1 in summer, respectively. Significant linear correlations were found between phytoplankton biomass, abundance, and absorption coefficients. Variations of Bacillariophyta and Cyanophyta biomass caused by temperature explained the seasonal variation in absorption coefficients. The specific absorption coefficient decreased with an increase in equivalent sphere diameter, and variations in phytoplankton community composition explained seasonal changes in the specific absorption coefficient.

Variability of phytoplankton light absorption in stratified waters of the NW Mediterranean Sea: The interplay between pigment composition and the packaging effect

The Variability of chlorophyll-specific phytoplankton light absorption [a*ph (λ)] was examined over depth and time in stratified offshore waters of the North-Western Mediterranean Sea. Coherent water patches were tracked with Lagrangian drifters during two oceanographic cruises in September (late summer) and May (post-spring bloom phase). By simultaneously analysing the phytoplankton absorption and pigment measurements, we explicitly separated the impact of pigment composition from that of pigment packaging on a*ph (λ). We further partitioned the packaging effect by comparing the variation of the packaging index [Qa*(440)], the phytoplankton community size structure (derived from diagnostic pigment analysis), and the chlorophyll-specific beam attenuation by particles [cp* (660)] as an optical index of phytoplankton photophysiology. In the ensemble of cruises, around 50% of the a*ph (440) vertical variation was explained by changes in the pigment composition (ruled by the decrease of photoprotective pigments with depth). The remaining vertical and inter-cruise variation of a*ph (440) was attributed to the packaging effect. We found that differences in the cp*(660) index (most likely indicating changes in the intracellular pigment concentration due to photoacclimation) mainly explained the observed variation in the packaging effect. Differences in cp* (660) were coincident with either the vertical gradient of light availability or the lower mean daily PAR irradiance in the euphotic layer of the September cruise. These explained the stronger packaging and lower a*ph (440) values observed with increasing depth in both cruises, and in September relative to May. On the other hand, differences in the phytoplankton community size structure did not explain the observed patterns in the packing effect. Our results highlight the importance of phytoplankton short-term acclimation to the prevailing light conditions, determining the vertical and temporal variability of a*ph (λ). A better understanding of the a*ph (λ) variability and its main drivers are key to improve different bio-optical applications.

Biogeographical trends in phytoplankton community size structure using adaptive sentinel 3-OLCI chlorophyll a and spectral empirical orthogonal functions in the estuarine-shelf waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico

The active hydrodynamics and complex circulation patterns in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM) provide a dynamic scenario to investigate mesoscale responses of the size structure of phytoplankton communities to environmental variability. In this study, a large in-situ dataset acquired in inland, estuarine and coastal waters of the nGoM and U.S. East Coast were utilized to achieve a regional parameterization of the red-NIR ratio-based chlorophyll a (Chl a) algorithm for the high-spatial and spectral resolution Sentinel 3-OLCI ocean color sensor. Using an adaptive scheme, the algorithm was used in combination with other standard Chl a algorithms such as the Neural Network (C2RCC) and OC4ME to optimally extract Chl a in water types ranging from turbid estuarine to clear oceanic waters in the nGoM. This adaptive methodology (Chl a_AD) showed better performance in estimating OLCI-Chl a (R2=0.84, N = 178) compared to any single algorithm in the estuarine-coastal-ocean waters of the nGoM. Next, OLCI-derived phytoplankton spectral absorption coefficients (OLCI-aphy) were obtained for comparison, using a regionally-tuned 3rd order function of OLCI-Chl a based on Multi-regression (MR), and an estuarine-to-ocean adaptive Quasi-Analytical Algorithm (QAA-AD). Finally, an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) algorithm was applied to OLCI-aphy to retrieve phytoplankton size fractions (PSFs) for the river-dominated nGoM region. Results indicate relatively better performance of MR-EOF in estimating fmicro (R2=0.87), fnano(R2=0.76) and fpico(R2=0.64) compared to QAA-AD-EOF. Chl a time-series (Oct 2016 – Jan 2020) obtained in the estuaries and shelf waters of the nGoM revealed seasonality (peak/lows in spring/fall) linked to river discharge, where hydrodynamics and wind driven variability due to storms further influenced the phytoplankton biomass spatiotemporal distribution. Microphytoplankton dominated in estuaries and the nGOM inner shelf waters, including the midshelf region during the spring peak river discharge period. PSF dynamics in the outer shelf is strongly influenced by Loop Current eddies where warm offshore waters contribute to the dominance of the picophytoplankton fraction. Floodwater discharge and strong winds due to Hurricane Barry (2019) transported estuarine microphytoplankton into the outer shelf and also increased nanophytoplankton fraction. Such fluctuations in phytoplankton size structure after hurricanes or storms can modify the pelagic food web dynamics in coastal systems.

Phytoplankton size- and abundance-based resilience assessments reveal nutrient rather than water level effects

The use of discontinuity analysis to assess resilience and alternative regimes of ecosystems has mostly been based on animal size. We so far lack systematic comparisons of size-based and abundance-based approaches necessary for assessing the performance and suitability of the discontinuity analysis across a broader range of organism groups. We used an outdoor mesocosm setup to mimic shallow lake ecosystems with different depths (1.2 m deep, “shallow”; 2.2 m deep, “deep”) and trophic status (i.e. low and high nutrient status characteristic of mesotrophic and hypertrophic lakes, respectively). We compared resilience assessments, based on four indicators (cross-scale structure, within-scale structure, aggregation length and gap size) inferred from the size and abundance (biovolume) structure of phytoplankton communities. Our results indicate that resilience assessments based on size and biovolume were largely comparable, which is likely related to similar variability in the size and abundance of phytoplankton as a function of nutrient concentrations. Also, nutrient enrichment rather than water depth influenced resilience, manifested in decreased cross-scale structure and increased aggregation lengths and gap sizes in the high-nutrient treatment. These resilience patterns coupled with decreased phytoplankton diversity and dominance of cyanobacteria in the high nutrient treatment support the use of discontinuity analysis for testing alternative regimes theory. Concordance of size-based and abundance-based results highlights the approach as being potentially robust to infer resilience in organism groups that lack discrete size structures.

Effect of phytoplankton community size structure on remote-sensing reflectance and chlorophyll a products

Abstract Remotely-sensed ocean colour is the main tool for estimating chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration and primary productivity on the global scale. In order to investigate the source of errors in remotely-sensed Chl-a concentration we obtained in situ bio-optical properties, in situ reflectances, satellite-derived reflectances and the Chl-a concentration satellite products of the Ocean and Land Colour Imager (OLCI) Instrument on board Sentinel-3 A in waters off eastern Australia. The mesoscale eddies of these oligotrophic waters provide contrasting phytoplankton communities that allowed us to focus on the effect of phytoplankton size as a source of errors. In these waters, cold-core cyclonic eddies (CE) are dominated by large phytoplankton cells, while small cells dominate warm-core anticyclonic eddies (ACE). The chlorophyll-specific absorption and backscattering from contrasting sites show significant difference due to the differing package effect of phytoplankton size distributions. After normalising the absorption and backscattering spectra to Chl-a associated with just small phytoplankton, the spectra of optical properties become much more similar, showing that small-sized phytoplankton dominate IOPs even when large cells contain the greater fraction of Chl-a concentration of the phytoplankton community. Measured in situ reflectances agreed with reflectances calculated using a simple optical model based on measured IOPs. Furthermore, the in situ measured reflectances agreed well with the OLCI reflectance (mean normalised bias (MNB) of 7% for wavelengths

Size-fractionated biomass and primary productivity of Sargasso Sea phytoplankton

The size structure of phytoplankton communities greatly influences the function of pelagic food webs and, ultimately, the flux of material from the surface ocean to the deep sea. While the biomass and taxonomic composition of organisms in a specific size class are important characteristics of a food web, the activity of that size fraction is more directly relevant to trophic dynamics and biogeochemical cycling. Even if a size class dominates cell abundance or biomass, does it necessarily contribute the most to total primary productivity (PP)? We asked this question for phytoplankton communities from the Sargasso Sea. The picophytoplankton (0.7–2 μm) accounted for 53–85% of the total integrated chl-a and 46–99% or more of the total integrated PP. The microphytoplankton (20–200 μm) were responsible for up to 38% of the total PP, but accounted for no more than 22% of total chl-a. Variations in the picophytoplankton size-class explained 84% of the variance in total integrated chl-a and 87% of the variance in total PP. Size-dependent relative contributions to chl-a versus PP varied with depth, with differences generally driven by vertical variations in C:chl-a ratios and chl-specific rates of PP. Use of the relative contributions of picophytoplankton to biomass as a predictor of their contributions to total primary productivity resulted in an average underestimate of ~7%.

Antarctic phytoplankton community composition and size structure: importance of ice type and temperature as regulatory factors

Climate change at the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is predicted to cause major changes in phytoplankton community composition, however, detailed seasonal field data remain limited and it is largely unknown how (changes in) environmental factors influence cell size and ecosystem function. Physicochemical drivers of phytoplankton community abundance, taxonomic composition and size class were studied over two productive austral seasons in the coastal waters of the climatically sensitive WAP. Ice type (fast, grease, pack or brash ice) was important in structuring the pre-bloom phytoplankton community as well as cell size of the summer phytoplankton bloom. Maximum biomass accumulation was regulated by light and nutrient availability, which in turn were regulated by wind-driven mixing events. The proportion of larger-sized (> 20 µm) diatoms increased under prolonged summer stratification in combination with frequent and moderate-strength wind-induced mixing. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that relatively high temperature was correlated with nano-sized cryptophytes, whereas prymnesiophytes (Phaeocystis antarctica) increased in association with high irradiance and low salinities. During autumn of Season 1, a large bloom of 4.5-µm-sized diatoms occurred under conditions of seawater temperature > 0 °C and relatively high light and phosphate concentrations. This bloom was followed by a succession of larger nano-sized diatoms (11.4 µm) related to reductions in phosphate and light availability. Our results demonstrate that flow cytometry in combination with chemotaxonomy and size fractionation provides a powerful approach to monitor phytoplankton community dynamics in the rapidly warming Antarctic coastal waters.

Comparison of Two Methods to Assess the Size Structure of Phytoplankton Community Assemblages, in Liaodong Bay, China

Liaodong Bay is one of the largest semi-enclosed bays located in Bohai Sea, in northeast China. It is an important feeding and spawning place, even wintering and breeding migration base for many marine organisms. The size structure of phytoplankton communities is a key feature of marine ecosystems and can be used as an indicator for algae disaster, but the methods to evalute is still challenging. Here, we compared the size-fractionated chlorophyll-a method with a high-throughout sequencing method in an evaluation of the size structure of phytoplankton assemblages in Liaodong Bay, China, in 2014. The proportion of picophytoplankton was estimated at just 19% according to the results based on size-fractionated chlorophyll-a, which likely represents a severe underestimation. The sequencing method confirmed that many kinds of phytoplankton species appeared in more than one size-fractionated filter membrane, with some even dominating where the filter membrane pore size was greater than the individual phytoplankton size. According to the sequencing method, the phytoplankton assemblages in Liaodong Bay were dominated by picophytoplankton (average proportion = 44%), followed by the nanophytoplankton (average 32%), a composition that is more consistent with other studies. The sequencing method provides a more robust way to assess the size structure and taxonomic diversity of marine phytoplankton communities.

Size fractionation, chemotaxonomic groups and bio-optical properties of phytoplankton along a transect from the Mediterranean Sea to the SW Atlantic Ocean

The relationships between the structure of the phytoplankton community and the bio-optical properties of surface waters were studied during the TransPEGASO cruise along a transect across the Atlantic Ocean that covered seven biogeographical provinces, from the Alborán Sea (SW Mediterranean) to the Patagonian Shelf. We characterized the composition of the phytoplankton community by means of high-performance liquid chromatography and CHEMTAX pigment analyses applied to whole water and two filtration size classes (< 3 and ≥ 3 μm), flow cytometric determinations and microscopic observations. Additionally, the study was complemented by measurements of the absorption of particulate matter and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The size class distribution of the chlorophyll a (Chl a) obtained from the size-fractionated filtration (SFF) was compared with that resulting from the diagnostic pigment algorithms (VU) developed by Vidussi et al. (2001) and Uitz et al. (2006), and the total Chl a–based expressions (HI) of Hirata et al. (2011). The seven provinces crossed by the transect could be divided into an oligotrophic group with Chl a < 0.25 mg m-3 comprising the tropical and subtropical Atlantic (including the Canary Current Coastal Province), and a eutrophic group (Chl a > 0.5 mg m-3) with a single Mediterranean (MEDI) sample and those from the southwestern Atlantic Shelf (SWAS). According to CHEMTAX, the most important taxa in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic were Prochlorococcus, haptophytes and Synechoccoccus, while the MEDI and SWAS were dominated by diatoms and haptophytes. Both the VU and HI algorithms, which are based on pigment composition or Chl a concentration, predicted for SWAS a high proportion of nano- and microphytoplankton, while the SFF indicated dominance of the < 3 μm size class. In addition, the CHEMTAX results indicated a high average diatom contribution in this province. However, at several SWAS stations with relatively high values of diatom Chl a estimated by CHEMTAX, the microscopic observations found only small concentrations of nano- or microplankton-sized cells. This discrepancy appeared to be due to the presence, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, of picoplankton-sized cells of the diatom Minidiscus sp. and of Parmales (a group sharing the pigment composition with the diatoms). These findings caution against a routine assignment of diatom pigments to the microplankton size class. The total non-water absorption in the water column was dominated by CDOM. The average contribution of phytoplankton absorption for the different provinces ranged from 19.3% in the MEDI to 45.7% in the SWAS and 47% in the western tropical Atlantic (WTRA). The Chl a–specific phytoplankton absorption [aph*(443), m2 mg-1] was lower in the MEDI and SWAS than in the oligotrophic provinces. aph*(443) was negatively correlated with the first principal component derived from a principal component analysis based on the concentration of the main pigments and was not correlated with indicators of phytoplankton community size structure such as the proportion of Chl a in the < 3 μm class or a size index derived from the VU size class distribution. These findings indicate that the variability observed in aph*(443) was mainly related to differences in pigment composition and possibly to photoacclimation processes, and that any package effects due to cell size were probably masked by other factors, an outcome that may be related to the relatively small influence of size within the narrow range of Chl a concentrations (all ≤ 2.4 mg m-3) considered in our study.

Primary Productivity Dynamics in the Summer Arctic Ocean Confirms Broad Regulation of the Electron Requirement for Carbon Fixation by Light-Phytoplankton Community Interaction

Predicting conversion of photosynthetic electron transport to inorganic carbon uptake rates (the so-called electron requirement for carbon fixation, KC) is central to the broad scale deployment of Fast Repetition Rate fluorometry (FRRf) for primary productivity studies. However, reconciling variability of KC over space and time to produce robust algorithms remains challenging given the large number of factors that influence KC. We have previously shown that light appears a proximal driver of Kc in several ocean regions and therefore examined whether and how light similarly regulated KC variability in the Arctic Ocean during a summer cruise 2016. Sampling transited ice-free and ice-covered waters, with temperature, salinity and Chl-a concentrations all higher for the ice-free than ice covered surface waters. Micro- and pico-phytoplankton generally dominated the ice-free and ice-covered waters respectively. Values of KC, determined from parallel measures of daily integrated electron transport rates and 14C-uptake, were overall lower for the ice-covered versus ice-free stations. As in our previous studies, KC was strongly linearly correlated to daily PAR (r=0.68, n=46, p<0.001) and this relationship could be further improved (r=0.84, n=46, p<0.001) by separating samples into ice-free (micro-phytoplankton dominated) versus ice-covered (Nano- and Pico-phytoplankton dominated water. We subsequently contrasted the PAR-KC relationship form the Arctic waters with the previous relationships from the Ariake Bay and East China Sea, and revealed that these various PAR-KC relationships can be systematically explained across regions by phytoplankton community size structure. Specifically, the value of the linear slope describing PAR-KC decreases as water bodies have an increasing fraction of larger phytoplankton. We propose that this synoptic trend reflects how phytoplankton community structure integrates past and immediate environmental histories and hence may be better broad-scale predictor of KC than specific environmental factors such as temperature and nutrients. We provide a novel algorithm that may enable broad-scale retrieval of CO2 uptake from FRRf with knowledge of light and phytoplankton community size information.

A Satellite Assessment of Environmental Controls of Phytoplankton Community Size Structure

AbstractPhytoplankton play a key role as the base of the marine food web and a crucial component in the Earth's carbon cycle. There have been a few regional studies that have utilized satellite‐estimated phytoplankton functional type products in conjunction with other environmental metrics. Here we expand to a global perspective and ask, what are the physical drivers of phytoplankton composition variability? Using a variety of satellite‐observed ocean color products and physical properties spanning 1997–2015, we characterize spatial and temporal variability in phytoplankton community size structure in relation to satellite‐based physical drivers. We consider the relationships globally and by major thermal regimes (cold and warm), dominant size distribution, and chlorophyll concentration variability. Globally, euphotic depth is the most important parameter driving phytoplankton size variability and also over the majority of the high‐latitude ocean and the central gyres. In all other regions, size variability is driven by a balance of light and mode of nutrient delivery. We investigated the relationship between size composition and chlorophyll concentration and the physical drivers through correlation analysis. Changes in size composition over time are regionally varying and explained by temporal shifts in the varying physical conditions. These changes in phytoplankton size composition and the varying underlying physical drivers will ultimately impact carbon export and food web processes in our changing ocean.

Energetic equivalence underpins the size structure of tree and phytoplankton communities

The size structure of autotroph communities – the relative abundance of small vs. large individuals – shapes the functioning of ecosystems. Whether common mechanisms underpin the size structure of unicellular and multicellular autotrophs is, however, unknown. Using a global data compilation, we show that individual body masses in tree and phytoplankton communities follow power-law distributions and that the average exponents of these individual size distributions (ISD) differ. Phytoplankton communities are characterized by an average ISD exponent consistent with three-quarter-power scaling of metabolism with body mass and equivalence in energy use among mass classes. Tree communities deviate from this pattern in a manner consistent with equivalence in energy use among diameter size classes. Our findings suggest that whilst universal metabolic constraints ultimately underlie the emergent size structure of autotroph communities, divergent aspects of body size (volumetric vs. linear dimensions) shape the ecological outcome of metabolic scaling in forest vs. pelagic ecosystems.
