Do phytoplankton require oxygen to survive? A hypothesis and model synthesis from oxygen minimum zones

AbstractIt is commonly known that phytoplankton have a pivotal role in marine biogeochemistry and ecosystems as carbon fixers and oxygen producers, but their response to deoxygenation has scarcely been studied. Nonetheless, in the major oceanic oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), all surface phytoplankton groups, regardless of size, disappear and are replaced by unique cyanobacteria lineages below the oxycline. To develop reasonable hypotheses to explain this pattern, we conduct a review of available information on OMZ phytoplankton, and we re‐analyze previously published data (flow cytometric and hydrographic) on vertical structure of phytoplankton communities in relation to light and O2 levels. We also review the physical constraints on O2 acquisition as well as O2‐dependent metabolisms in phototrophs. These considerations, along with estimates of the photosynthetic capacity of phytoplankton along OMZ depth profiles using published data, suggest that top‐down grazing, respiratory demand, and irradiance are insufficient to fully explain the vertical structure observed in the upper, more sunlit portions of OMZs. Photorespiration and water–water cycles are O2‐dependent pathways with low O2 affinities. Although their metabolic roles are still poorly understood, a hypothetical dependence on such pathways by the phytoplankton adapted to the oxic ocean might explain vertical patterns in OMZs and results of laboratory experiments. This can be represented in a simple model in which the requirement for photorespiration in surface phytoplankton and O2‐inhibition of OMZ lineages reproduces the observed vertical fluorescence profiles and the replacement of phytoplankton adapted to O2 by lineages restricted to the most O2‐deficient waters. A high O2 requirement by modern phytoplankton would suggest a positive feedback that intensifies trends in OMZ extent and ocean oxygenation or deoxygenation, both in Earth's past and in response to current climate change.

Phytoplankton dynamics in nearshore regions of the western Antarctic Peninsula in relation to a variable frontal zone in the Gerlache Strait

The Gerlache Strait is a narrow channel that separates the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) from the Palmer Archipelago. This area is characterized by the presence of interconnected fjords, bays, islands, and channels that serve as a refuge for megafauna during summer. Through the framework of FjordPhyto – a citizen science collaboration with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) vessels – we assessed phytoplankton biomass and composition in surface waters of six under-explored nearshore areas connected to the Gerlache Strait (between 64° and 65° S) during three consecutive seasons, from November to March (2016–2019). During the first two seasons, we found significant differences in the phytoplankton community distribution and successional patterns to the north and south of the sampling area; the greatest differences were evidenced mainly in the months of high biomass, December and January. During December, cryptophytes bloomed in the north, while microplanktonic diatoms dominated in the south, and during January, small centric diatoms dominated in the north, while prasinophytes bloomed in the south. This spatial distinction in phytoplankton communities were mainly associated with the occurrence of a surface thermal front in the Gerlache Strait around 64.5° S. The presence of the front separating warm waters to the north and colder waters to the south, during the months of December to February, was confirmed by the analysis of 10 years of remote sensing data. By contrast, during the third season, low biomass prevailed, and no differences in the phytoplankton composition between the north and south areas were observed. The third season was the coldest of the series, with smaller differences in water temperature north and south of the usual front location. This study shows for the first time a complete overview of the phytoplankton composition throughout the entire growth season (November through March) in the nearshore areas of the WAP between 64° and 65° S. The results of this work contribute to the understanding of the phytoplankton community in relation to small scale physical features during the Antarctic austral summer.

Ecological Insights from Phytoplankton Diversity Off Veraval, Gujarat Coast, India

Phytoplankton species are sensitive to environmental and seasonal variability. This property of phytoplankton can be used to predict and study fluctuations in the ecological health of the system. In this study, phytoplankton diversity and its direct interactions with abiotic components of the ecosystem were studied to evaluate the health and stability of the coastal waters of Veraval, Gujarat coast, India. Results showed that diatoms dominated the ecosystem with a strong seasonal pattern of community succession. Waters were well churned and turbidity hindered penetration of light into deeper layers during the fall and winter monsoon season whereas stratification during spring inter-monsoon governed the distribution of different phytoplankton groups in the water column. These seasonal shifts resulted in a sincere pattern of annually re-occurring seasonal succession and formation of bloom events in the region. Apart from general phytoplankton diversity and its seasonal succession, the study intended to understand the forces governing the diversity and ecological system as a whole. To meet this objective, percent light intensities of chlorophyll-a, at various depths and temperatures were studied in relation to phytoplankton density. The correlation did not stand well for stations having active bloom formation showing that chlorophyll-a cannot be used as a proxy of phytoplankton biomass during bloom conditions. Thus excluding the points corresponding to active bloom conditions, second order polynomial equations were developed explaining the changes in chlorophyll-a concentration with variations in phytoplankton cell counts for study seasons. It was observed that most phytoplankton cells preferred upper well-lit layers of the water column with 100% light intensity followed by depths with 50% and 1% light intensities respectively. Study on temporal dynamics of the phytoplankton community in relation to temperature showed that the winter monsoon was characterized by a temperature range of 21.9 °C to 29 °C where Navicula distans was the most abundant phytoplankton species. Skeletonema costatum was the most abundant species at 27.2 °C during fall intermonsoon. Spring inter monsoon had an abundance of Navicula distans at both 28.35 °C and 28.9 °C.

Phytoplankton Community in Relation to Environmental Variables in the Tidal Mangrove Creeks of the Pasur River Estuary, Bangladesh

The Pasur River estuary (PRE) provides vital fishery resources and supports millions of livelihoods in the southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh. Our research focused on phytoplankton community assemblages, alpha diversity indices, and the seasonal succession of major phytoplankton species in relation to physicochemical parameters in the tidal mangrove creeks of the Pasur River estuary. Spatial and temporal variations were assessed by water sampling at 17 stations in the study area from January to December 2019. The mean salinity level in the tidal mangrove creeks of the PRE was significantly (p < 0.05) higher during the dry season than during the wet season. Spatially, no significant variation (p > 0.05) was observed in the dissolved inorganic nitrogen and dissolved inorganic phosphorus between PRE and mangrove creeks, but temporally, the variables varied significantly (p < 0.05). Spatially, no significant variation (p > 0.05) was observed in the alpha diversity of the phytoplankton community but significantly (p < 0.05) varied temporally. Blue-green algae became dominant in the oligohaline conditions during the wet season, while diatoms were dominant during the dry season which severely depleted dissolved silica. In terms of phytoplankton species diversity, our study classifies the study areas as highly diversified zones. Phytoplankton succession from diatoms (dry season) to blue-green algae (wet season) is attributed to the changes in the physicochemical and nutrient parameters depending on seasonal environmental parameter fluctuations. This study illustrated that phytoplankton diversity and density varied with the degrees of habitat and seasonal changes, implying the potential impacts of anthropogenic activities and natural causes on their community structure in tropical estuaries and mangrove creeks.

Spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton community in relation to environmental factors in the southern coastal waters of Korea

The spatial and temporal environmental conditions in the southern coastal waters of Korea (SCWK) as a complex area, which is influenced by both ocean currents and anthropogenic nutrient inputs, are highly variable. The impacts of environmental factors on the distribution of phytoplankton community structure in the SCWK remain unclear. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of a variety of photosynthetic pigments, spatial and temporal variations in phytoplankton community compositions were investigated in the SCWK. Cluster analysis, correlation analysis, and generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to explore the major phytoplankton groups and their response patterns to temperature, salinity, depth, and macronutrients. The results indicated that diatoms were the absolute dominant groups in the SCWK for all seasons, especially in cold seasons. Diatoms mainly concentrated at 1% light depths, while high chlorophyll-a concentrations (>3 µg/L) occurred at 100% and 30% light depths with good light conditions. Both clustering and correlation analyses showed that diatoms had a strong positive correlation with macronutrients such as dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP), and dissolved silica (DSi). The temperature and salinity discrepancy between surface and bottom layers in summer caused a strong water stratification resulting in blocking nutrient-rich bottom water upwelling and leading cyanobacteria to become the dominant groups at 100% and 30% light depths in summer. Consistently, the cyanobacteria were highly associated with high temperature and low salinity in the correlation analysis and GAM results. Compared with diatom-predominant sites, cryptophytes and diatom-dominated sites are characterized by higher average excess nitrate (ExN). Further research on the responses of small-sized prokaryotic phytoplankton especially cyanobacteria to environmental variations and their primary production contributions would warrant a better understanding of the SCWK ecosystem.

Dynamics of phytoplankton community in relation to seasonal variation and Laminaria japonica culturing in coastal area

Seaweed aquaculture is an important industry with great social and eco-environmental values. This study assessed the water quality and phytoplankton community during the four seasons around the Taohua Island where seaweed aquaculture has been practiced for near 70 years. Sampling was conducted in Laminaria japonica culturing area. Significant seasonal effects were observed among measured environmental factors and phytoplankton community. The species number and density of phytoplankton were positively correlated with temperature (T), Secchi depth (SD) and total nitrogen (TN) but were negatively correlated with dissolve oxygen (DO). In spring (the late culturing period), the seaweed culture increased pH, DO and salinity, while slightly reduced total phosphorous (TP). The phytoplankton abundance was lower in the culturing area than in control area, whereas the Shannon-Wiener diversity were found to be higher. Our study demonstrated that seasonal environment changes (especially T, SD, TN and DO) had strong influence on the functional characteristics of the phytoplankton community and L. japonica cultivation can absorb the nutrients and enhance phytoplankton diversity, thus alleviating eutrophication and reducing the risk of algal blooms. This is of significance to remediate the coastal eutrophicated and to restore the ecosystem.

Microplanktonic diatom assemblages dominated the primary production but not the biomass in an Antarctic fjord

The western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) fjords, currently threatened by climate change, are known as high krill congregation areas, however, the primary productivity in relation to phytoplankton groups in these coastal areas remains uncertain. To test this, we studied the specific composition, diversity and cellular carbon content of phytoplankton communities in relation to primary production (PP) and growth rates in Andvord Bay, its connection to Gerlache Strait and a near station on the continental shelf during spring (2015) and autumn (2016). Based on the microscopic determination of the relative biomass of the different microalgal taxa we determined three main phytoplankton assemblages that differ in their composition, PP, growth, and spatial and temporal distribution: (1) an assemblage dominated by cryptophytes, with high biomass (59.2 ± 28.2 μgC L−1), intermediate PP (63.1 ± 32 mgC m−3 d−1), and low growth (0.2 ± 1.1 d−1) present in the inner part of the fjord during spring, and related to higher surface water temperatures; (2) an assemblage dominated by microplanktonic diatoms (mainly Odontella weissflogii) with intermediate biomass (40.1 ± 17.2 μgC L−1), high PP (151.2 ± 62.5 mgC m−3 d−1), and high growth (0.9 ± 1 d−1) present from the fjord mouth to the Gerlache Strait waters during spring and in shelf waters during autumn, related to high irradiance and microzooplankton biomass; and (3) an assemblage dominated by dinoflagellates, mainly small gymnodinioids (< 15 μm long), with low biomass (3.5 ± 3.5 μgC L−1), low PP (6.9 ± 5.1 mgC m−3 d−1), and intermediate growth (0.5 ± 0.6 d−1) present in the whole fjord and the Gerlache Strait during autumn and infrequently during spring, related to high meltwater fraction. During both seasons, the highest phytoplankton biomass, richness and productivity in Andvord Bay was located in a frontal area at the fjord's mouth. Overall, the results of this study support the notion that WAP fjords are highly productive, highlighting the role of microplanktonic diatom as the main organic carbon producers, even when they occur in low abundances, due to their photosynthetic potential and higher Carbon-to-Chlorophyll a ratio. Our results, together with previous phytoplankton growth rates measured in the WAP nearshore waters from King George Island to Marguerite Bay, are higher than those measured on the WAP shelf and in the Ross Sea suggesting micro- and macronutrient enrichment from glacial melt maintains high productivity throughout the growth season in fjords. Our results support the hypothesis that climate change could highly affect the coastal WAP ecosystems by changing the balance between more productive phytoplankton assemblages (diatoms) to considerably less productive phytoplankton assemblages (cryptophytes).

Spatial and seasonal variation in physicochemical characteristics and phytoplankton in an estuary of a tropical delta system

The delta of the Parnaíba River has a set of highly dynamic, productive ecosystems located in the Amazon–semiarid interface environment on the coast of Brazil. Phytoplankton is a key element in the evaluation of aquatic environments, as it is extremely sensitive to the broad spatial and seasonal variability of masses of freshwater and the physicochemical conditions of the water. To evaluate spatial–seasonal variation in the hydrological characteristics and the phytoplankton community in relation to the saline gradient, three sampling campaigns were performed at eight points considering seasonal periods (dry, rainy and transition) and spatial distribution (Nearshore Turbid Zone [NTZ], Mixing Zone [MZ] and Tidal River Zone [TRZ]) during neap tides. Variability in the environmental characteristics and phytoplankton was tested using permutational multivariate analysis of variance, dissimilarities and correlations. The data revealed a strong spatial–seasonal​ influence throughout the entire length of the estuary, with a clear spatial gradient related to salinity. Thalassiosira subtilis was the bioindicator for the NTZ, Cyclotella meneghiniana for the MZ and Oocystis parva for the TRZ. Concentrations of chlorophyll a, suspended particulate matter and nitrite were the main variables affected by the two factors combined (seasonality and spatial distribution). Moreover, total dissolved solids, nitrate and nitrite were the variables that promoted favorable ecological conditions for the development of the phytoplankton community associated with seasonality, especially the growth of Cyclotella meneghiniana, which proved to be better adapted to these conditions and was considered a key species in the area studied.

Characterizing the vertical phytoplankton distribution in the Philippine Sea off the northeastern coast of Luzon

The vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the open ocean shows an increase in biomass at a depth referred to as the Subsurface Chlorophyll Maximum (SCM) that contributes significantly to the primary production of the water column. Hence, it is important to understand the dynamics that lead its formation and maintenance. This study examines the SCM in the Philippine Sea off the northeast coast of Luzon, utilizing bio-optical and empirical phytoplankton data from two oceanographic cruises conducted northeast of the island of Luzon in May/June 2011 and April/May 2012. Chlorophyll (Chl) profiles were converted to smoothed chlorophyll functions by using a b-spline basis. In 2011, the mean SCM depth was 97.24 m ± 22.33 m with mean SCM concentration of 0.43 μg/L ± 0.09 μg/L while in 2012, mean SCM was deeper at 115.45 m ± 24.25 m and mean SCM concentration of 0.31 ± 0.09 μg/L. Functional principal component analysis showed that the first principal component (PC) explained variability in the SCM depth, the second PC showed variability in the magnitude of the SCM concentration while the third PC accounted for the presence of multiple peaks. K-means clustering using the principal components resulted in three clusters which represented the offshore stations with the deepest SCM, stations within an observed cyclonic eddy with intermediate SCM and stations with coastal and shelf waters showing shallow SCM. Correlation analyses between Chl and physico-chemical and bio-optical parameters showed that Chl was positively correlated to beam attenuation, a bio-optical property that has been used as an alternative proxy for phytoplankton. This suggests that the observed SCMs represent actual increase in phytoplankton biomass. When the influence of the Kuroshio recirculation gyre was dominant in 2011, cooler temperature in surface waters was seen to significantly increase surface Chl. In 2012, highly saline waters from the tropical North Equatorial Current (NEC) waters appeared to lower the Chl distribution, particularly at the SCM. Phytoplankton abundance was recorded to be higher at the SCM than the surface in both years. In 2011, different species of diatoms dominated all clusters, except at the SCM of the coastal and shelf cluster wherein the dinoflagellate Gyrodinium grossestriatum was dominant. Most dominant species from 2011 were conspicuously absent in 2012 and there was a shift to the diatoms Fragilariopsis (surface), Thalassiosira and Rhizosolenia spp. in all clusters. These provide new insights on the phytoplankton community in relation to the changes in the oceanic circulation from subtropical North Pacific water in 2011 to tropical NEC water in 2012.

Exponential decay of between-month spatial dissimilarity congruence of phytoplankton communities in relation to phosphorus in a highland eutrophic lake.

Phytoplankton species composition has long been recognized to be structured by environmental filtering, but our knowledge of patterns of spatial dissimilarity congruence between the phytoplankton community and environmental divers is rather limited. Specifically, a study on whether there are specific temporal properties that could be more related to spatial dissimilarity remains to be seen. We examined the extent to how spatial dissimilarity changed with seasonal succession by measuring β-diversity in phytoplankton communities in Lake Erhai (from January 2012 to December 2014 at 15 sampling sites) as a function of different period conditions (high-density period and low-density period). We found that congruences of spatial dissimilarity in algal communities over time were neither stable in time nor showed a seasonal pattern. The spatial dissimilarity congruence between the phytoplankton community and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentration followed exponential decay patterns, and this congruence was led by algal cell density. This result implies that species and functions of phytoplankton are specialized, and DIP concentration drastically increases in high-density periods than in low-density periods. This means that DIP enrichment is related to the loss of algal diversity and functions and the increase of algal biomass in eutrophic lakes.

Seasonal variations of phytoplankton community in relation to environmental factors in a protected meso-oligotrophic southern Mediterranean marine ecosystem (Mellah lagoon, Algeria) with an emphasis of HAB species.

The spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton communities including HAB species in relation to the environmental characteristics was investigated in the protected meso-oligotrophic Mellah lagoon located in the South Western Mediterranean. During 2016, a biweekly monitoring of phytoplankton assemblages and the main abiotic factors were realized at three representative stations. Taxonomic composition, abundance, and diversity index were determined. In total, 227 phytoplankton species (160 diatoms and 53 dinoflagellates) were inventoried. There was a clear dominance of diatoms (62.9%) compared with dinoflagellates (36.8%). Diatoms dominated in spring and dinoflagellates developed in summer and early autumn in Mellah showing a marked seasonal trend. Data showed that the dynamic of the phytoplankton taxa evolving in the lagoon was mainly driven by temperature and salinity. For the first time, a number of potentially toxic species have been identified, including 2 diatoms (Pseudo-nitzschia group delicatissima, Pseudo-nitzschia group seriata) and 5 dinoflagellates (Alexandrium minutum, Alexandrium tamarense/catenella, Dinophysis acuminata, Dinophysis sacculus, Prorocentrum lima). These harmful species could threat the functioning of the Mellah lagoon and human health and require the establishment of a monitoring network. Finally, our study suggests that the observed decrease of the phytoplankton diversity between 2001 and 2016 could result from the reduction in water exchanges between the lagoon and the adjacent coast following the gradual clogging of the channel.

Eutrophication in three Canadian Areas of Concern: Phytoplankton and major nutrient interactions

The Bay of Quinte, Hamilton Harbour and Toronto Harbour are all coastal regions of Lake Ontario that have experienced eutrophication and all have been designated as ‘Areas of Concern’ under the terms of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. An assessment of the phytoplankton communities in relation to nutrient (P,N,Si) regimes was undertaken during 2015 (Bay of Quinte) and 2016 (Hamilton Harbour and Toronto Harbour) in order to compare and contrast the dynamics of eutrophication in the three ecosystems. Bay of Quinte was found to be phosphorus and silica enriched, but nitrogen limited which resulted in a phytoplankton community dominated by both filamentous diatoms and diazotrophic (N–fixing) cyanobacteria. Hamiton Harbour was phosphorus and nitrogen enriched, but silica depleted with a community dominated by small and large phytoflagellates in addition to experiencing cyanobacteria blooms. Toronto Harbour, by contrast, showed only moderate phosphorus enrichment and no nitrogen limitation, but some silica depletion; phytoplankton was dominated by smaller flagellates and pennate diatoms. Our findings suggest that while phosphorus was a key factor causing cultural eutrophication, other nutrients including nitrogen and silica also had important roles in determining the biomass and composition of the algal standing crop. Future management activities need to consider how the interactions of phosphorus with other nutrients (nitrogen, silica) affect the dynamics of the phytoplankton community in order to promote the recovery of eutrophic ecosystems.

Seasonal variations of phytoplankton community in relation to environmental factors in an oligotrophic area of the European Atlantic coast (southeastern Bay of Biscay)

In the present study, seasonal variability of physico-chemical variables and phytoplankton community as well as their relationships were studied for oligotrophic coastal waters of southeastern Bay of Biscay. During a 4-year period (2012–2015), a total of 265 phytoplankton taxa were identified, mainly represented by dinoflagellates and diatoms. The highest cell abundances were usually found in spring, mainly attributed to diatoms. Similarly, the biggest contribution to total biomass was given by diatoms: highest values (geometric mean) were found in winter and spring. Although phytoplankton abundance was mostly composed of small cells (2–20μm), biomass was similarly represented in the 2–20μm and >20μm size ranges. Between 21 and 29% of total species variability was significantly explained by different physico-chemical variables. However, this percentage was notably lower at the level of major taxonomic groups. In general, nutrients (mainly ammonium and phosphate) and temperature explained the highest percentage of species variability, whilst salinity played an important role in the summer months. Among the potentially toxic taxa, Dinophysis and Phalacroma species in summer and autumn appeared associated with relatively high ammonium concentrations.

Environmental factors influencing phytoplankton communities in Lake Diefenbaker, Saskatchewan, Canada

Abstract Lake Diefenbaker (LD) is a large reservoir located in the Canadian Prairies. Approximately 98% of the inflow is from the South Saskatchewan River (SSR). The composition and ecology of the phytoplankton community along the length of LD has not been reported since the 1980s. This is a potential problem for a reservoir that serves as an important source of water for indirect domestic consumption, irrigation, and recreation. Therefore, we examined epilimnetic whole water samples along the length of LD during the open-water season (June to October) in 2011 and 2012. We estimated the trophic status from chlorophyll a (TSI chl a ) and examined the phytoplankton community in relation to environmental factors. We observed high flow events that carried large nutrient loads and associated turbidity into LD from the SSR. Despite the high flow events, mean TSI chl a placed LD as a mesotrophic system with a highly diverse phytoplankton community (72 genera). The increased nutrient and non-algal turbidity associated with high flow events may be related to the dominance of the cryptophytes and the bacillariophytes (both constituted ~ 89% of the total phytoplankton biomass). Inflow and water temperature explained 41% of the variation in cryptophyte biomass, whereas mixing depth and particulate nitrogen to particulate phosphorus molar ratios explained 38% of the variation in bacillariophyte biomass. A case study on the application of the MSFD to Mediterranean coastal systems: the Po plume, as a transitional water system in the Northern Adriatic basin

1 - In the frame of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) of the European Community, in order to assess the Good Environmental Status (GES) of the marine coastal and estuarine waters, the eutrophication descriptors include several aspects of the phytoplankton communities (such as composition, abundance and biomass). 2 - Two oceanographic campaigns were carried out in the area off the Po River plume, where a highly dynamic frontal zone separates an inshore and an offshore system. The coupling of size structure and diagnostic pigments of phytoplankton communities in relation to different environmental contexts are tested as an expedite and informative tool to assess water quality sensu MSFD. 3 - The Po plume creates a very dynamic frontal zone, resulting in strong trophic gradients within a relatively small area. 4 - The spatio-temporal variability of salinity in coastal waters and in transitional waters plays a pivotal role in structuring phytoplankton communities. 5 - The dynamics of forcing factors drive changes in cell-size structure, in the functional group composition as well as a shift in size within the same functional group. 6 - The combination of phytoplankton size-structure and chemotaxonomic compositions is proposed as an expedite tool for investigating, at the appropriate scales, the ecology of transitional water systems.

Phytoplankton community in relation to physico-chemical characteristics of the Talar River, Iran

The community structure of plankton was studied in relation to physico-chemical characteristics of the river Talar polluted by industrial effluents and domestic sewage from November 2008 to July 2009. In addition, seasonal changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton populations and species abundance were also determinate. The dominant phytoplanktonic algae determined were Oscillatoria, Anabaena, Nostoc, Spirogyra, Pediastrum, Navicula and Nitzschia. The dominant zooplanktonic organisms determined were Paramecium, Daphnia, Cypris, Keratalla and Arachinous. The present study on ecology and the surface water of this fresh water river covered a number of aspects, beginning from abiotic and biotic parameters to pollution assessment and thereby reveals a true picture of the water quality of the river .

Identifying resilience mechanisms to recurrent ecosystem perturbations

The complex nature of ecological systems limits the unambiguous determination of mechanisms that drive resilience to natural disturbance or anthropogenic stress. Using eight-year time series data from boreal lakes with and without bloom formation of an invasive alga (Gonyostomum semen, Raphidophyceae), we studied resilience of phytoplankton communities in relation to recurring bloom impacts. We first characterized phytoplankton community dynamics in both lake types using univariate metrics of community structure (evenness, species richness, biovolume and Simpson diversity). All metrics, except species richness, were substantially altered and showed an inherent stronger variability in bloom lakes relative to reference lakes. We assessed resilience mechanisms using a multivariate time series modelling technique. The models captured clear successional dynamics of the phytoplankton communities in all lakes, whereby different groups of species were substituted sequentially over the ice-free period. The models also identified that G. semen impacts in bloom lakes were only manifested within a single species group, not across species groups, highlighting the rapid renewal of the phytoplankton communities upon bloom collapse. These results provide empirical support of the cross-scale resilience model. Cross-scale resilience could provide an explanation for the paradox that similar species richnesses are seen in bloom-forming lakes and reference lakes despite the clear difference between the community features of the two different sets of lakes investigated.

Composition and interannual variability of phytoplankton in a coastal upwelling region (Lisbon Bay, Portugal)

From July 2001 to May 2005, at a fixed station located in Lisbon Bay (Cascais: 38° 41′ N, 09° 24′ W), surface seawater samples were collected on a weekly basis. We aimed to describe at different temporal scales, short-term to interannual, the phytoplankton community in relation to hydrographic conditions. Maxima of the main phytoplankton groups varied according to the seasonality of upwelling/downwelling cycles and nutrient availability and were associated with particular hydrological mesoscale structures highlighted by satellite images. Short succession cycles were identified dependent on coastal upwelling events. Intermittent and weak pulses allowed the coexistence of species from different succession stages and groups, although having consecutive maxima. The interannual differences observed in the phytoplankton community, in Lisbon Bay, varied according to both the duration and strength of the upwelling events and to precipitation and Tagus river flow regimes. Diatoms developed and were dominant, during spring–summer under prevailing upwelling conditions and silicon availability. Short upwelling pulses appeared to be unfavourable for diatoms maintenance. When upwelling weakened and SST increased due to onshore advection of warmer waters, coccolithophores dominated. This assemblage was the second most abundant during the study, in particular during the short transition period from upwelling (summer) to downwelling seasons (autumn) distributing in the largest range of hydrographical conditions between diatoms (maximum turbulence) during early spring and dinoflagellates (maximum stratification) during summer to further dominate during autumn and winter. Nitrites and nitrates seemed to favour greater developments of this group. Dinoflagellates peaked mainly during summer and were the less abundant through the four years due to the decrease of lasting convergence periods. Like coccolithophores, a preference for warmer waters emerged but this group seemed to have a narrow tolerance to turbulence and temperature changes.
