Interactive effects of viral lysis and warming in a coastal ocean identified from an idealized ecosystem model

Marine viruses have been identified as key players in biogeochemical cycles and in the termination of phytoplankton blooms; however, most biogeochemical models have yet to resolve viral dynamics. Here, we incorporate a viral component into a 1D ecosystem model to explore the influence of viruses on ecosystem dynamics under current and future climatic conditions in a coastal ocean. Virus-phytoplankton interactions and zooplankton grazing were mechanistically described through size-based contact rates. The model demonstrated that the presence of viruses increased nutrient retention in the upper water column. This corresponded to a reduction in phytoplankton biomass, production of dead organic matter and transfer of biomass to higher trophic levels. Viral presence played a key role in deeper water layers, near the thermocline. While warming alone reversed these trends, the combination of warming and viral presence enhanced the effect of viruses, indicative of synergistic interaction. Our results highlight the need of incorporating viral dynamics in the existing marine ecosystem models to better predict ecosystem responses to climate change.

Water filtration by endobenthic sandprawns enhances resilience against eutrophication under experimental global change conditions

Identifying processes that confer resilience against global change is a scientific challenge but is central to managing ecosystem functionality in future. Detecting resilience-enhancing mechanisms is especially relevant in coastal ecosystems, where multi-stressor interactions can drive degradation over time. Here, we quantify the resilience-conferring potential of endobenthic sandprawns against eutrophication, including under high temperatures. We show using a global change mesocosm experiment that sandprawn presence was associated with declines in phytoplankton biomass, particularly under eutrophic conditions, where sandprawns reduced phytoplankton biomass by approximately 74% and prevented a shift to extreme eutrophy. Eutrophic waters were nanophytoplankton-dominated, but sandprawn presence countered this, resulting in even contributions of pico- and nanophytoplankton. Our findings highlight the potential for sandprawns to increase resilience against eutrophication by limiting phytoplankton blooms, preventing extreme eutrophy and counteracting nanophytoplankton dominance. Incorporating endobenthic crustaceans into resilience-based management practices can assist in arresting future water quality declines in coastal ecosystems.

Increasing air temperature relative to water temperature makes the mixed layer shallower, reducing phytoplankton biomass in a stratified lake

Abstract The depth of the mixed layer is a major determinant of nutrient and light availability for phytoplankton in stratified waterbodies. Ongoing climate change influences surface waters through meteorological forcing, which modifies the physical structure of fresh waters including the mixed layer, but effects on phytoplankton biomass are poorly known. To determine the responses of phytoplankton biomass to the depth of the mixed layer, light availability and associated meteorological forcing, we followed daily changes in weather and water column properties in a boreal lake over the first half of a summer stratification period. Phytoplankton biomass increased with the deepening of the mixed layer associated with high wind speeds and low air temperature relative to the temperature of the mixed layer (Tair−Tmix < 0), whereas heatwave conditions—shallow mixed layer driven by high Tair−Tmix value and low wind speed—reduced the biomass. Improving light availability from low to moderate light conditions increased the phytoplankton biomass, while the highest light availability was associated with low phytoplankton biomass. Our study demonstrates that the climatic impact‐drivers wind speed and Tair−Tmix are major drivers of mixed layer depth, which controlled phytoplankton biomass during the early summer stratification period. Our study suggests that increasing air temperature relative to water temperature and declining wind speeds have potential to lead to reduced phytoplankton biomass due to a shallower mixed layer during the first half of the stratification period in non‐eutrophic lakes with sufficient light availability.

Interactions of warming and altered nutrient load timing on the phenology of oxygen dynamics in Chesapeake Bay

AbstractThe effects of nutrient loading on estuaries are well studied, given the multitude of negative water quality and ecosystem effects that have been attributed to excess nitrogen and phosphorus. A current gap in this knowledge involves the sensitivity of seasonal cycles of estuarine biogeochemical processes to direct (warming) and indirect influences (nutrient load timing) of climate change. We used a coupled hydrologic–biogeochemical model to investigate changes in the phenology of hypoxia and related biogeochemical processes in Chesapeake Bay under three different hydrologic regimes. Shifts to earlier nutrient load timing during idealized simulations reduced the overall annual hypoxic volume, resulting from discernable, but relatively small reductions in phytoplankton biomass and both sediment and water‐column respiration. Simulated increases in water temperature caused an increase in spring/early summer hypoxic volume associated with elevated respiration rates, but an associated exhaustion of organic matter in the early summer caused a decrease in late summer/fall hypoxic volume due to lowered respiration. Warming effects on hypoxia were larger than nutrient timing effects in scenarios where warming was restricted to spring and when it was applied to all months of the year. These idealized simulations begin the process of understanding the potential impacts of future climatic changes in the seasonal timing of key biogeochemical processes associated with eutrophication.

Nitrogen limitation prevents the effects of iron or dust additions on biological carbon fixation in the Gulf of California

This paper reports the effect of dissolved iron (dFe) and dust additions on the Biological Carbon Fixation (BCF) rates in the surface layer of the central Gulf of California (GC). Two on deck experiments were conducted in the summer of 2016 at an oceanographic station located in the Guaymas Basin. Each experiment consisted in the incubation of natural phytoplankton assemblages collected at three distinct depths within the upper 50 m layer and amended either with iron (FeCl3) or dust leachate, followed by the quantification of BCF rates using the 13C assimilation method. A very warm (∼30 °C) water column strongly stratified and with reduced phytoplankton biomass (<1 mg chlorophyll a m−3) was indicative of an oligotrophic environment. In addition, the surface levels of NO3−+NO2− (<0.1 μM), dFe (1.71 ± 1.04 nM), as well as the Fe:N (78 ± 47 nmol μmol−1) and N:P (0.04 ± 0.01) ratios revealed that phytoplankton was under conditions of inorganic nitrogen limitation. BCF rates measured during the experiments ranged between 0.46 ± 0.04 and 6.24 ± 0.34 mg C m−3 h−1 with the highest values at the maximum of fluorescence and their vertical distribution was associated with the carbon biomass of picophytoplankton and diatoms. Despite the oligotrophic condition that predominated during the cruise, most of the Fe or dust additions did not show a significant effect (p > 0.05) on the magnitude of BCF rates, which was attributed to the fact that N, rather than Fe, was the limiting nutrient for phytoplankton production. However, Fe limitation cannot be completely ruled out as two samples (one for each treatment) showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in BCF rates. We suggest that atmospheric supply of dust during the summer could play a relevant biological role maintaining high concentrations of dFe (and other bioactive metals) in the surface waters of central GC.

Biomass, community composition and N:P recycling ratios of zooplankton in northern high‐latitude lakes with contrasting levels of N deposition and dissolved organic carbon

Abstract Global changes are causing decreases in inorganic nitrogen (N) concentrations, increases in coloured dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, and decreases in dissolved inorganic N to total phosphorus ratios (DIN:TP) in northern lakes. The effects of these changes on phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass and the N:P recycling ratio of zooplankton remain unresolved. In 33 Swedish headwater lakes across subarctic‐to‐boreal gradients with different levels of N deposition (low N in the north [Västerbotten, boreal; Abisko, subarctic] vs. high N in the south [Värmland, boreal; Jämtland, subarctic]), we measured water chemistry, phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll‐a [Chl‐a], Chl‐a:TP), seston mineral quality (C:P, N:P), as well as zooplankton biomass, community composition, and C:N:P stoichiometry. We estimated nutrient imbalances and the N:P recycling ratios of zooplankton using ecological stoichiometry models. There was a large‐scale gradient from low lake DIN and DIN:TP in the north to high DIN and DIN:TP in the south, with lower DIN:TP in lakes coinciding with higher DOC within each region. Lower lake DIN was associated with lower phytoplankton biomass (lower Chl‐a:TP). Lower lake DIN:TP was associated with richer seston mineral quality (lower seston C:P and N:P) and higher zooplankton biomass. Zooplankton community composition differed in the north vs. south, with a dominance of N‐requiring calanoid copepods with high N:P in the north and P‐requiring cladocerans with low N:P in the south. Also, greater differences in zooplankton community composition were found between subarctic regions (with lower DOC) than between boreal regions (with higher DOC), suggesting that increases in lake DOC and associated declines in lake DIN:TP reduce differences in zooplankton community composition. The combination of lower lake DIN, higher lake DOC, and lower lake DIN:TP led to reduced zooplankton N:P recycling ratios, possibly by reducing seston N:P and/or by enhancing calanoid copepod dominance in the zooplankton community. Our findings suggest that the combination of declining N deposition and increasing lake browning in northern high‐latitude lakes will reduce phytoplankton biomass, but will concurrently enhance seston mineral quality and probably also zooplankton biomass and their recycling efficiency of P relative to N.

Impacts of sediment resuspension on phytoplankton biomass production and trophic transfer: Implications for shallow lake restoration

Wind-induced sediment resuspension in shallow lakes may enhance nutrient availability while reducing light availability for phytoplankton growth, thereby affecting the entire food-web. Lake restoration projects that reduce wind-induced resuspension are expected to enhance trophic transfer efficiencies, thereby improving food-web structure and functioning. Yet, reduced resuspension may also lead to lower nutrient concentrations in the water column, promote benthic algae development, reduce phytoplankton biomass production and thereby reduce secondary production by zooplankton. Lake Markermeer is a shallow delta lake in The Netherlands subject to wind-induced sediment resuspension. Restoration project Marker Wadden consists of newly built islands aiming to reduce sediment resuspension and promote higher trophic levels. Here, we tested the effects of reduced sediment resuspension on phytoplankton biomass build-up, benthic algae development, and zooplankton abundances at different temperatures in a 14-day indoor microcosm experiment. We used Marker Wadden sediment with three resuspension intensities combined with three temperatures, to also test effects of higher temperatures in shallow sheltered waters. Reduced sediment resuspension decreased nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton biomass build-up, while increasing light availability and enhancing benthic algae biomass development. Reduced sediment resuspension furthermore increased zooplankton biomass. Enhanced sediment resuspension and higher temperatures synergistically interacted, maintaining a high level of inorganic suspended solids. Our experimental results are in line with long-term seasonal observations from Lake Markermeer. Our findings demonstrate that for shallow lakes suffering from wind effects, measures such as Marker Wadden aimed at reducing sediment resuspension can be effective in restoring secondary production and supporting higher trophic levels.

Microbial plankton responses to multiple environmental drivers in marine ecosystems with different phosphorus limitation degrees

Multiple drivers are threatening the functioning of the microbial food webs and trophic interactions. Our understanding about how temperature, CO2, nutrient inputs, and solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) availability interact to alter ecosystem functioning is scarce because research has focused on single and double interactions. Moreover, the role that the degree of in situ nutrient limitation could play in the outcome of these interactions has been largely neglected, despite it is predominant in marine ecosystems. We address these uncertainties by combining remote-sensing analyses, and a collapsed experimental design with natural microbial communities from Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean exposed to temperature, nutrients, CO2, and UVR interactions. At the decade scale, we found that more intense and frequent (and longer lasting) Saharan dust inputs (and marine heatwaves) were only coupled with reduced phytoplankton biomass production. When microbial communities were concurrently exposed to future temperature, CO2, nutrient, and UVR conditions (i.e. the drivers studied over long-term scales), we found shifts from net autotrophy [primary production:respiration (PP:R) ratio > 1] towards a metabolic equilibrium (PP:R ratio ~ 1) or even a net heterotrophy (PP:R ratio < 1), as P-limitation degree was higher (i.e. Atlantic Ocean). These changes in the metabolic balance were coupled with a weakened phytoplankton-bacteria interaction (i.e. bacterial carbon demand exceeded phytoplankton carbon supply. Our work reveals that an accentuated in situ P limitation may promote reductions both in carbon uptake and fluxes between trophic levels in microbial plankton communities under global-change conditions. We show that considering long-term series can aid in identifying major local environmental drivers (i.e. temperature and nutrients in our case), easing the design of future global-change studies, but also that the abiotic environment to which microbial plankton communities are acclimated should be taken into account to avoid biased predictions concerning the effects of multiple interacting global-change drivers on marine ecosystems.

Phosphorus balance in a tropical shallow urban pond in Southeast Brazil: implications for eutrophication management

ABSTRACT A detailed mass balance that evaluates nutrient inputs and outputs is fundamental to determining the most promising strategies to mitigate eutrophication and its undesirable effects. However, such analyses are rare in Brazilian urban ponds where water quality impairment remains a significant issue. We performed a mass balance to identify the main phosphorus (P) sources in a hypereutrophic tropical shallow urban pond. We used the PCLake model to estimate the P loading required to reduce phytoplankton biomass. The water column was considered the primary unit in the model. The P balance was calculated from external inputs, internal inputs from bed sediment to the water column, and outputs from the water column through surface water outflow and to the bed sediments over a full hydrological year. The total P input into the pond water (external and internal) was 35.3 mg m−2 d−1 and the output was 35.2 mg m−2 d−1. The P balance revealed that contributions to the water column from external and internal sources were 82.5% and 17.5%, respectively. Birds were the main contributor to P input (76.0%). The highest P loss from the water column was to the sediment (97.6%). Most of the P leaving the water column to the sediment was retained in the sediment, and part was returned to the water column through internal loading. Measures to reduce eutrophication in this pond should focus on integrated management to decrease both the external and internal P sources by managing birds and avoiding P release from sediment, and to decrease water residence time in the pond.

Prior exposure to stress allows the maintenance of an ecosystem cycle following severe acidification

Ecosystem processes vary temporally due to environmental fluctuations, such as when variation in solar energy causes diurnal cycles in primary production. This normal variation in ecosystem functioning may be disrupted and even lost if taxa contributing to functioning go extinct due to environmental stress. However, when communities are exposed to the stress at sub‐lethal levels over several generations, they may be able to develop community‐level stress tolerance via ecological (e.g. species sorting) or evolutionary (e.g. selection for tolerant genotypes) mechanisms and thus avoid the loss of stability, as defined by the resistance of a process. Community tolerance to a novel stressor is expected to increase the resistance of key processes in stressed ecosystems. In freshwater communities we tested whether prolonged prior exposure to an environmental stressor, i.e. acidification, could increase ecosystem stability when the communities were exposed to a subsequent press perturbation of more severe acidification. As a measure of ecosystem stability, we quantified the diurnal variation in dissolved oxygen (DO), and the resistance of the DO cycle and phytoplankton biomass. High‐frequency data from oxygen loggers deployed in 12 mesocosms showed that severe acidification with sulfuric acid to pH 3 could cause a temporary (i.e. two‐week long) loss of diurnal variation in dissolved oxygen concentration. The loss of diurnal variation was accompanied by a strong reduction in phytoplankton biomass. However, the pre‐exposure to acidification for several weeks resulted in the maintenance of the diurnal cycle and higher levels of phytoplankton biomass, though they did not return to as rapidly to pre‐exposure functioning as non‐exposed mesocosms. These results suggest that ecosystem stability is intrinsically linked to community‐wide stress tolerance, and that a history of exposure to the stressor may increase resistance to it, though at the cost of some resilience.

Ecological Efficiency of the Mussel Hyriopsis cumingii (Lea, 1852) on Particulate Organic Matter Filtering, Algal Controlling and Water Quality Regulation

Hyriopsis cumingii plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems and fishery economy due to its potential value for water purification and edibleness. The present study was undertaken to reveal the short- and long-term purifying effects of H. cumingii on pond water. The short-term experiment results showed that total suspended solids, particulate organic carbon, and fatty acid in water were significantly eliminated by H. cumingii, with average percentage of filtering effect respectively reaching 22.19%, 57.48%, and 21.00% in the high-density group. Analogously, H. cumingii could significantly reduce phytoplankton biomass, species number, density, and chlorophyll-a concentration, especially in the control of diatoms, green algae, and cyanobacteria. Besides, electric conductivity also was significantly reduced by H. cumingii and its variation tendency showed a typical density-dependent effect. Similar purification effects were observed in chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. In the long-term monitoring test, H. cumingii has also shown positive effects on the water transparency and the control to phytoplankton and COD in recirculating aquaculture pond. Overall, H. cumingii showed excellent ecological function, and the mixed breeding density of shellfish in the recirculating aquaculture pond is worth further exploration.

Cascading effects of freshwater salinization on plankton communities in the Sierra Nevada

AbstractRunoff containing road salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) causes the salinization of inland freshwaters, with potentially severe impacts on aquatic species. We performed a mesocosm experiment to test the effects of salinization on plankton community structure in an oligotrophic mountain lake with a limited history of elevated salt concentrations. We exposed plankton communities to a gradient of 30 salt concentrations ranging from 1 to 2900 Cl− mg L−1 for 6 weeks. Adding salt increased zooplankton biomass at concentrations &lt; 500 mg Cl− L−1 while reducing phytoplankton biomass. Zooplankton biomass declined precipitously at higher concentrations, with phytoplankton biomass showing a mirror image increase. The initial increase in zooplankton biomass with salt addition suggests that zooplankton are salt‐limited at low ionic concentrations. Additionally, the inverse response of zooplankton and phytoplankton suggests that salinity mainly affects phytoplankton biomass via changes in top‐down regulation by grazers.

Long-term impacts of nutrient control, climate change, and invasive clams on phytoplankton and cyanobacteria biomass in a large temperate river

Recent studies suggest that climate change, with warmer water temperatures and lower and longer low flows, may enhance harmful planktic cyanobacterial growth in lakes and large rivers. Concomitantly, controlling nutrient loadings has proven effective in reducing phytoplankton biomass especially in North America and Western Europe. In addition, the impact of invasive benthic filter-feeder species such as Corbicula on phytoplankton has largely been overlooked in large rivers, leading to even more uncertainty in predicting future trajectories in river water quality.To investigate how nutrient control, climate change and invasion of benthic filter-feeders may affect phytoplankton biomass and composition, we assembled a large database on the entire water course of the River Loire (France) over three decades (1991–2019). We focus on cyanobacteria to provide an in-depth analysis of the 30-year trend and insights on future possible trajectories. Since 1991, total phytoplankton and cyanobacteria biomasses have decreased 10-fold despite warmer water temperature (+0.23 °C·decade−1) and lower summer flow (−0.25 L·s−1·km−2·decade−1). In the long-term, the contribution of planktic cyanobacteria to total biomass was on average 2.8%. The main factors driving total phytoplankton and cyanobacteria biomasses were total phosphorus (4-fold decrease), the abundance of Corbicula clams (from absence before 1998 to 250–1250 individuals·m−2 after 2010), the duration of summer low flows and the intensity of summer heatwaves. The River Loire constitutes an example in Europe of how nutrient control can be an efficient mitigation strategy, counteracting already visible effects of climate change on the thermal regime and flow pattern of the river. This may hold true under future conditions, but further work is needed to account for the climate trajectory, land and water use scenarios, the risk of enhanced benthic biofilm and macrophyte proliferation, together with the spread of invasive filter-feeding bivalves.

Drivers assessment of zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton under different scenarios of fish predation and turbidity in an in situ mesocosm experiment

Zooplankton play a key role in energy transfer within lake food webs, but we have a poor knowledge concerning their role as phytoplankton grazers in shallow subtropical lakes. In this study, we aimed to determine how zooplankton grazing upon phytoplankton is altered in different scenarios of fish predation and turbidity, and we explored the relevance of grazing compared to other environmental variables, to explain phytoplankton biomass changes. A mesocosm experiment was conducted by including the following treatments: fish, turbidity, fish + turbidity, and a control (without fish or varying turbidity). The experiment lasted 21 days, and samples were taken four times. Zooplankton grazing was only effective for the microphagous group upon Cryptophyceae, while large Chlorophyceae and small pennate Bacillariophyceae biomass were benefited in the presence of copepods and cladocerans, being negatively affected by depletions in nitrogen availability. In the turbidity treatment, a reduction in phytoplankton biomass was obtained, artificially increasing zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton, while fish presence inhibited grazing of adult copepods and cladocerans. The other groups of phytoplankton were only influenced by the environment. This experiment suggests that phytoplankton biomass variations would be more affected by the environment than by zooplankton grazing in shallow lakes from the Parana River.

Long-term dynamics in nutrients, chlorophyll &lt;em&gt;a&lt;/em&gt; and water quality parameters in the Lagoon of Venice

Since 1997, CNR-ISMAR has been collecting monthly hydrochemical and phytoplankton data in the northern and central basins of the Lagoon of Venice. The data have been part of the International Long-Term Ecosystem Research (LTER) database since 2007, helping to fill a gap in lagoon environmental studies. Analysing our time series (1998-2017), we were able to observe a rise in water temperature due to climate trends, a reduction in trophic status mainly due to the lower input of inorganic dissolved nitrogen nutrients and an increase in transparency and dissolved oxygen related to the increased biomass of macrophytes (macroalgae and seagrasses). Finally, a reduction in phytoplankton biomass and an accompanying increase in seagrass and macroalgal cover were observed. Present and future studies will help to evaluate the ways in which the Lagoon of Venice ecosystem responds to anthropogenic pressures and global climate change.

Long-term responses of epiphytic midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) to emergent macrophytes removal and P concentrations in a shallow hypertrophic lake ecosystem

Chironomid larvae are used as indicators of environmental changes in neolimnological and paleolimnological research. In the present study, we evaluated the responses of epiphytic chironomids to changes in environmental conditions over a long time scale. We intended to decipher whether changes in the trophic status of a lake (hypertrophic-eutrophic) would affect the taxonomic structure of epiphytic chironomids by influencing their food availability (structure of periphytic algae) and whether the responses of chironomids are taxa specific. In a shallow hypertrophic lake ecosystem, epiphytic chironomids associated with the emergent macrophyte Phragmites australis were studied from 2001 to 2018. In the autumn of 2006, emergent macrophyte removal led to an improved water transparency and reduced phytoplankton biomass. Epiphytic chironomids responded clearly to the shift from hypertrophic to eutrophic conditions. Under hypertrophic conditions larvae of detritivorous Cricotopus sp. (gr. sylvestris) and filter-feeder larvae of Glyptotendipes sp. prevailed. After macrophyte removal, we observed high relative abundances of Endochironomus albipennis and Paratanytarsus austriacus, which are classified as grazers, utilise periphytic algae (mainly diatoms) as a food source. The results indicated that the density of P. australis, relative abundances of cyanobacteria and diatoms in periphyton communities, Secchi disc depth, and periphytic and planktonic Chl-a are significant determinants of the diversity of epiphytic chironomids. The results can provide a reliable reference to the neolimnological and paleominological studies on chironomid responses to multiple environmental stressors in shallow lakes.

The interannual variabilities of chlorophyll and nutrients in San Francisco Bay: a modeling study

San Francisco Bay (SFB) is a complex ecosystem that has been heavily impacted by human activities. It has experienced strong year-to-year variations in physical, chemical, and biological conditions, due to both natural climate variation and human activities. There is a need to investigate this long-term variation, with a focus on management practices and needs. The study aims to construct a coupled hydrodynamic and ecosystem model SCHISM/CoSiNE, to investigate interannual variability of chlorophyll and nutrient dynamics in SFB over the 10-year period of 2005–2014. The coupled SCHISM/CoSiNE model captures the long-term observations well. It shows that high chlorophyll concentrations in South Bay persist during warm months, while chlorophyll in North Bay is low and has strong interannual variation. Nutrient concentrations are higher in North Bay where large river outflow influences their distribution and interannual variation, and in lower South Bay. The model results show that phytoplankton blooms in Suisun Bay tend to occur when flow rates are between 100 and 250 m3/s and ammonium concentration is in the range of 1–2 mmol/m3. Model sensitivity experiments show that benthic grazing can potentially reduce phytoplankton biomass, and its effect on chlorophyll concentration is modulated by river outflow. We demonstrate the potential of this open-source model for exploring water quality conditions and options for river flow management of SFB.

Effect of filter-feeding mollusks on growth of green macroalgae and nutrient cycling in a heavily exploited coastal lagoon

An increasing number of coastal lagoons are being exploited for intensive farming of bivalve filter-feeders. One of the most important farming sites in Europe for the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) is the Sacca di Goro lagoon (Po River Delta, Italy). Here, while on the one hand river runoff enhances high clam productivity, on the other hand it stimulates extensive blooms of green seaweeds of the genus Ulva. The latter can affect clams when macroalgal biomass collapses and decomposes. We hypothesized that the filtration of suspended particulate matter by farmed clams could enhance inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus recycling and simultaneously reduce phytoplankton biomass, thus facilitating macroalgal growth. An experiment simulating the effects of clams on early Ulva development was conducted over 7 days in outdoor flow-through mesocosms containing lagoon sediments with and without clams. On day 1, 3 and 7, macroalgal biomass and thallus elemental composition, water-dissolved nutrients and chlorophyll-a concentrations were recorded. On day 7, sediment-water nutrient fluxes were also measured on sediment cores sampled from each mesocosm. The presence of clams clearly stimulated Ulva growth and enhanced nutrient recycling rates. Furthermore, Ulva grown with clams had higher chlorophyll-a, nitrogen and phosphorus content. While sediments showed a net release of both soluble reactive phosphorus and ammonium when clams were present, in mesocosms without clams sediments constituted a sink for both dissolved inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen. Based on this evidence we can conclude that intensive clam farming over wide lagoon areas could significantly affect nutrient cycling, thus facilitating macroalgal blooms, with serious consequences for farming sustainability and for the functioning of the whole lagoon ecosystem.

Water filtration by burrowing sandprawns provides novel insights on endobenthic engineering and solutions for eutrophication

Managing coastal ecosystems and preserving socio-ecological functioning require a comprehensive understanding of ecological services provided by resident organisms. Here, we provide novel information on water-filtration activities of endobenthic sandprawns (Callichirus kraussi), which are key ecosystem engineers in South African coasts. We demonstrate experimentally that benthic engineering by sandprawns reduces phytoplankton biomass by roughly 50%. Using long-term estuarine data, we demonstrate similar reductions in phytoplankton biomass (by roughly 70%) in sandprawn-dominated areas. Increased burrow wall chlorophyll-a relative to surface sediments that was evident in experiments suggests that pelagic filtration occurs through bi-directional water pumping and phytoplankton adsorption onto burrow walls. Our findings expand understanding of the ecological relevance of sandprawns and functionally similar organisms, the mechanisms by which they engineer ecosystems and their role in mediating coastal bentho-pelagic coupling. Our findings also highlight the potential for deposit-feeders to be used as nature-based solutions to counter coastal eutrophication.

Extreme mortality and reproductive failure of common murres resulting from the northeast Pacific marine heatwave of 2014-2016.

About 62,000 dead or dying common murres (Uria aalge), the trophically dominant fish-eating seabird of the North Pacific, washed ashore between summer 2015 and spring 2016 on beaches from California to Alaska. Most birds were severely emaciated and, so far, no evidence for anything other than starvation was found to explain this mass mortality. Three-quarters of murres were found in the Gulf of Alaska and the remainder along the West Coast. Studies show that only a fraction of birds that die at sea typically wash ashore, and we estimate that total mortality approached 1 million birds. About two-thirds of murres killed were adults, a substantial blow to breeding populations. Additionally, 22 complete reproductive failures were observed at multiple colonies region-wide during (2015) and after (2016–2017) the mass mortality event. Die-offs and breeding failures occur sporadically in murres, but the magnitude, duration and spatial extent of this die-off, associated with multi-colony and multi-year reproductive failures, is unprecedented and astonishing. These events co-occurred with the most powerful marine heatwave on record that persisted through 2014–2016 and created an enormous volume of ocean water (the “Blob”) from California to Alaska with temperatures that exceeded average by 2–3 standard deviations. Other studies indicate that this prolonged heatwave reduced phytoplankton biomass and restructured zooplankton communities in favor of lower-calorie species, while it simultaneously increased metabolically driven food demands of ectothermic forage fish. In response, forage fish quality and quantity diminished. Similarly, large ectothermic groundfish were thought to have increased their demand for forage fish, resulting in greater top-predator demands for diminished forage fish resources. We hypothesize that these bottom-up and top-down forces created an “ectothermic vise” on forage species leading to their system-wide scarcity and resulting in mass mortality of murres and many other fish, bird and mammal species in the region during 2014–2017.
