The Efficacy of Manual Therapy on Musculoskeletal Pain in Menopause: A Systematic Review

(1) Background: The aim of this review was to evaluate the effects of manual therapy for musculoskeletal pain in menopausal women. (2) Methods: A comprehensive search of manuscripts published from inception until 29 February 2024 was conducted on PubMed, EBSCO Information Services (EBSCOhost), Physiotherapy Evidence Database (Pedro), Web of Science, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Clinical Trials, and Scopus using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and free terms. Randomized controlled trials (RCT) investigating the effects of manual therapy for musculoskeletal pain in postmenopausal women were included. Articles published in non-English or non-Portuguese languages, case reports, expert opinions, dissertations, conference papers, and gray literature were excluded. Studies were screened for population, musculoskeletal pain, intervention, and pain outcome by two independent reviewers using an ad hoc data extraction form. (3) Results: A total of 5 RCTs (4 with high risk of bias and 1 with low risk of bias) were included (total sample = 245), addressing thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis, thoracic kyphosis, chronic neck and backache, knee osteoarthritis, and sternocostal joint pain. The combined results of these studies showed improved musculoskeletal pain in menopausal women; duration of the follow-up was between 4 weeks to 6 months. Conclusions: The majority of studies included in this systematic review were effective in reducing musculoskeletal pain in menopausal women. These results come mainly from studies with a high risk of bias with small sample sizes, and the most representative follow-up period was short-term. Therefore, the results of this systematic review should be interpreted with caution.

Cognitive enhancement through technology: A review of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) interventions in children and adolescents with specific learning disabilities.

In recent years, the exploration of innovative interventions for addressing problems of children and adolescents with specific learning disabilities (SLD) has garnered significant attention within the realm of neurocognitive research. Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing cognitive skills in children, offering a non-invasive and safe method that may particularly benefit those with learning difficulties. We aimed to appraise the extent and the quality of studies about impact of TES on cognitive skills including academic skills in children and adolescents with SLD. A literature search was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Articles published between January 2000 and January 2024 were searched in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar. The study eligibility criteria were previously established according to the PICO model. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale and Cochrane Collaboration tool (ROB2) were used to assess the methodological quality and the risk of bias of the included studies, respectively. The initial search yielded 1571 studies among which 30 studies were systematically reviewed. The total number of participants was 224 individuals (intervention: 114; control: 110). Findings showed significant improvements in reading skills such as text reading, high-frequency word reading speed and efficiency and mathematical skills. Conversely, other cognitive skills such as working memory were not improved in people with dyslexia and dyscalculia. TES interventions can positively affect cognitive skills in children and adolescents with SLD; However, due to the small number of studies, medium methodological quality and high risk of bias, caution should be taken when interpreting the results.

The Clinical Significance of Mulligan's Mobilization with Movement in Shoulder Pathologies: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Mulligan's mobilization with movement (MWM) is a manual therapy technique designed to address musculoskeletal pain and joint mobility. Despite immediate reported improvements by patients, the clinical significance of MWM compared with other interventions remains uncertain. Objective: To assess the clinical effectiveness of MWM for shoulder pathologies compared with other treatment methods. Methods: The databases PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) were searched up to June 2024. Inclusion criteria were limited to randomized controlled trials published in English and Turkish languages, focusing on the MWM technique for shoulder pathologies. Two independent reviewers evaluated methodological quality based on the PEDro scale. Outcome data were analyzed for pain, function, and range of motion (ROM) using SPSS Statistics 29.0. Results: Twenty-seven studies (1157 participants) were included. MWM demonstrated statistical superiority in function (MD = -11.24, 95% CI: [-18.33, -4.16], p = 001) and shoulder flexion and abduction ROM compared with other mobilization techniques. There was a significant MD in pain intensity, which was -1.55 cm (95% CI: [-2.60, -0.51], p = 0.00), with high heterogeneity (I2 = 93%), favoring MWM in comparison with control group. MWM was significantly better for shoulder abduction ROM in comparison with physical therapy interventions (MD = -14.44, 95% CI: [1.98, 26.90], p = 0.02) with high heterogeneity (I2 = 90%) and control group (SMD = 56.67, 95% CI: [7.71, 111.63], p = 0.02) with high heterogeneity (I2 = 96%). However, clinical significance was not consistently achieved. Conclusions: Although some statistical significance was found when comparing MWM with other her treatment methods, it was observed that most of the statistically significant data did not reach clinical significance. Upon closer examination, outcome measures that showed clinical significance, either the interventions in the comparison group were inadequate, not evidence-based, or the improvements within the group were not logical.

Effectiveness and safety of photobiomodulation therapy in diabetic peripheral neuropathy: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a widely prevalent complication in patients with type 2 diabetes, exerts a significant influence on patients' overall health and financial circumstances. Photobiomodulation therapy is one of the means of physical therapy for DPN. Although preliminary findings suggest the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy in alleviating peripheral neuropathy, the existing literature lacks substantial evidence regarding its safety and effectiveness specifically in the context of diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy. Therefore, we plan to arrive at more distinct findings through systematic evaluation and meta-analysis. We will conduct a comprehensive search for studies published from the beginning until October 1, 2023, using various databases including Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, AMED, Wanfang database, VIP database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Chinese Biomedical Literature database. Simultaneously, we will also search for the WHO International Clinical Trial Registration Platform, China Clinical Trial Registration Platform, and Clinical Trials.gov. Gray literature will be retrieved using Google Scholar and opengrey.edu. Only randomized controlled trials in Chinese and English were included, with no restrictions on publication status. The primary outcomes will include change of symptom scores, change of nerve conduction velocity. Additional outcomes will encompass quality of life, change in pain, blood glucose levels after fasting and 2 hours after eating, levels of glycosylated hemoglobin, and any adverse events associated with photobiomodulation therapy. Reman V.5.4 and R language will be used for the meta-analysis. Assessment of potential bias will be conducted through Cochrane risk of bias 2 tool (RoB 2.0) and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. Registration: PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42023466586). This meta-analysis aims to assess the efficacy and safety of photobiomodulation therapy as a potential treatment for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), and providing a straightforward and convenient therapeutic for patients. Additionally, it expands the range of treatment alternatives available to healthcare professionals managing DPN.

Physical therapy for the management of global function, fatigue and quality of life in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: systematic review and meta-analyses.

To critically evaluate the effectiveness of physical therapy interventions in improving global function, quality of life and fatigue in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Systematic review and meta-analyses. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library (CENTRAL) and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) were searched through 31 January 2023. We included randomised clinical trials (RCTs) that compared physical therapy interventions that act on global function, fatigue and quality of life in individuals with ALS with any other non-physiotherapeutic methods and techniques, placebo or non-intervention. The primary outcome measure was the evaluation of global function. Secondary outcomes were quality of life, fatigue and adverse events. Two independent authors used a researcher-developed extraction form and the Rayyan software to search, screen and code included studies. The risk of bias was assessed using the PEDro scale. Meta-analyses were conducted employing random effects. Outcomes were succinctly presented in Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation evidence profiles. Our searches identified 39 415 references. After study selection, three studies were included in the review. Such studies involved 62 participants with a mean age of 54.6 years. In the evaluated trials, 40 were male, while 22 participants were female. Regarding the type of onset of the disease, 58 participants had spinal onset of ALS, and four had bulbar. Physical therapy intervention may improve the global function of individuals with ALS in the short term; however, clinically, it was inconclusive. In terms of quality of life and fatigue, physical therapy intervention is not more effective than control in the short term. Adverse events are not increased by physical therapy intervention in the short term. Due to significant methodological flaws, small sample sizes, wide CIs and clinical interpretation, our confidence in the effect estimate is limited. CRD42021251350.

Effects of tinnitus retraining therapy on patients with tinnitus: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

This review aims to explore the influences of tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) on patients with tinnitus. PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PEDro, SCOPUS, and Web of Science were screened for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that explored the effects of TRT on patients with tinnitus from inception to June 30, 2024. The methodological quality of the included RCTs was evaluated using the physiotherapy evidence database (PEDro) scale. Fifteen studies met our eligibility criteria. A total of 2069 patients with tinnitus (mean age 52.93years; 66% male) were involved in the present review. The quality of the selected studies ranged from 5 to 8 on the PEDro scale, with a median score of 7. TRT did not provide superior effects in treating patients with tinnitus compared to tinnitus masking (TM), tinnitus educational counselling (TED), TRT with open ear hearing aids, Tailor-made notched music training (TMNMT), partial TRT, usual care, and smart TRT. TRT intervention is considered a treatment option for patients with tinnitus. Combining TRT with other interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, or tDS, may show even greater efficacy. Additional studies are strongly required to recognize the long-term effects of TRT on tinnitus, determine who most likely would benefit from the intervention regarding tinnitus type and severity, and identify the optimal treatment protocol.

Effects of Different Exercise Training on Physical Fitness and Technical Skills in Handball Players. A Systematic Review.

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2024-This review aimed to assess the effects of exercise training on handball players' performance. A thorough search was conducted in 5 online databases (ProQuest, PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost (SPORTDiscus), as well as on Google Scholar and other gray literature references starting on April 11, 2022. The methodological quality of the included research was evaluated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. This systematic review includes 16 studies. Eight studies received "excellent" ratings (≥6 points), 5 received "good" ratings (5 points), and 3 received "moderate" ratings (4 points). The findings showed that the most frequently examined performance factors in exercise training intervention strategies with handball players were balance (n = 5), agility (n = 8), speed (n = 9), and jumping performance (n = 10). Muscular strength (n = 4), shooting and dribbling skill (n = 3), and muscular endurance (n = 4) were the second most frequently investigated performance factors. Regarding speed and agility, exercise training considerably improved the physical fitness of handball players. However, evidence related to muscular strength, shooting ability, and dribbling skills was limited. To achieve the optimum standard, handball players must have strong physical and physiological qualities. Meanwhile, no evidence was found related to the impacts of exercise training on power, endurance, flexibility, body composition, cardiovascular fitness, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Regarding limitations, there is a need for more research with solid evidence to determine the impacts of exercise training interventions on athletes' performance in handball.

Benefits of Table Tennis for Children and Adolescents: A Narrative Review.

This study aims to review the scientific evidence regarding the effects of table tennis practice on children and adolescents. Studies were searched in three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and SportDiscus) from their inception up to May 2024. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the 10-point Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS). A total of twelve studies were examined, with interventions involving children with intellectual disabilities, ADHD, DCD, ASD, and typically developing children. A variety of training programs were assessed over durations ranging from 6 weeks to 1 year in the studies included. Table tennis was shown to positively impact various domains, including executive function, motor skills, visual perception, graphomotor function, gross motor skills, coordination capacity, behavioral inhibition, and social behavior. Nonetheless, it is imperative to expand the number of studies on children and adolescents with diverse conditions to more comprehensively evaluate the benefits of table tennis for each specific condition.

Effect of Core Muscle Training on Balance and Agility in Athletes: A Systematic Review

The objective of this review was to systematically summarize the existing literature on the effect of core muscle training on measures of balance and agility in athletes. A search was conducted to identify the eligible articles on core muscle training, balance, agility, and athletes in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database that were published from inception to April 15, 2022. The literature search retrieved 3,299 articles, of which 17 randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria of the review. Two reviewers independently performed study selection and assessed the quality of included studies using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale, and a third reviewer was consulted in case of disagreements. The quality of the studies was mixed. Core muscle training can be used to target balance and agility in athletes. Furthermore, core training of variable frequency, intensity, and type can be incorporated in athletic programs to improve balance and agility.

Effects of nonimmersive virtual reality using Wii-Fit exercises on balance and cognition in Parkinson disease: A meta-analysis.

Patients' compliance and receptivity to nonimmersive virtual reality (NIVR) can enhance their long-term exercise therapy compliance for neurological illnesses. Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) have age-standardized rates of disability, death, and prevalence that are rising the fastest; several researches have revealed that there is no known cure for PD at this time. Thus, the current study investigates how NIVR affects patients with PD using Wii-Fit exercises. Therefore, the present study investigates the effects of NIVR using Wii-Fit exercises among patients with PD. The population, intervention, comparison, outcome approach was used to select the research studies. Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, and ProQuest were checked for citations from 2012 to 2022. RevMan was used to analyze data. A fixed and random effects model was used to analyze the pooled effect size in terms of mean and standard deviation. The heterogeneity was calculated using the I2 statistic. Cochrane examined for bias in randomized controlled trials. This review comprised 12 trials in total. Using the Berg Balance Scale, the pooled analysis showed statistically significant effects on the NIVR group (pooled standardized mean difference = 0.61 [95% confidence interval, 0.28-0.95]; I2 = 53%; P = .0003). The pooled effects of cognition showed nonsignificant effects of NIVR (pooled standardized mean difference = 0.15 [95% confidence interval, -0.21 to 0.51]; I2 = 0%; P = .41). The review suggests that NIVR is effective for balance rehabilitation but ineffective for cognitive improvement in patients with PD aged >18 to 85 years.

Effects of physical exercise intervention on improving physical functioning and quality of life among geriatric population: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

To assess the effectiveness of exercise intervention on elderly population's physical functioning and quality of life. The systematic review was conducted in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analyses guidelines, and comprised research on Cochrane Library, PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database and Web of Science for randomised controlled trials published in the English language from January 2012 to December 2021. The trials included comprised individuals of either gender aged ≥60 years who were either community-dwelling elderly or patients living in residential facilities who could walk independently with or without assistive devices. Key words used for the search included age, exercise, physical function, quality of life and cognition. A 10-point scale from the Physiotherapy Evidence Database was used for methodological evaluation. Of the 1050 studies initially found, 14(1.33%) were analysed in detail. All 14(100%) included multi-component exercise interventions, like aerobic, strength and balance, 4(28.6%) trials included cognition and quality of life as well. Only 1(7.14%) trial showed little or no improvement in terms of quality of life. Of the 2(14.3%) studies that reported the effects of exercise on falls, 1(50%) found positive impact of exercise interventions, while 1(50%) showed no improvement on the risk of fall and psychosocial factors related to fall. Overall, 9(64.3%) trials investigated the effects of exercise training on several aspects of mobility, and showed marked improvement in mobility. Also, 8(57.14%) trials studied the effect of exercise intervention on balance performance, and 1(12.5%) of them showed no effect on balance. Of the 9(64.3%) trials investigating the effects of exercise intervention on muscle strength, 5(55.5%) reported increase in muscle strength. Multi-component exercises were found to have a positive impact on functional and psychosocial health of geriatric population.

The efficacy of transcranial random noise stimulation in treating tinnitus: a systematic review.

This review aims to examine the effects of transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) on tinnitus and to determine the optimal treatment parameters, if possible. A comprehensive search, including MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and PEDro, was conducted to determine experiments studying the effects of tRNS on tinnitus from inception to March 1, 2024. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. Seven studies met the eligibility criteria. A total of 616 patients with non-pulsatile tinnitus (mean age 50.93 years; 66% males) were included in this review. The included studies ranged from 3 to 8 out of 10 (median = 7) on the PEDro scale. The results showed that tRNS is an effective intervention in reducing tinnitus symptoms. The evidence for the effects of tRNS on people with chronic non-pulsatile tinnitus is promising. Administering tRNS with an intensity of 1-2mA, high-frequency (101-650Hz), using a 35cm² electrode size over the auditory cortex and DLPFC, for 20min with eight sessions may demonstrate the desired tRNS effects. The tRNS stimulation should be contralateral for unilateral tinnitus and bilaterally for bilateral tinnitus. Combining tRNS with other concurrent interventions may show superior effects in reducing tinnitus compared to tRNS alone. Further high-quality studies with larger sample sizes are strongly needed.

A methodological and reporting quality assessment of systematic reviews/meta-analyses on exercise interventions for cognitive function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

To assess the methodological quality of meta-analytic literature on exercise interventions for cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the certainty of evidence for its outcome indicators, and to provide clinicians and researchers with more reliable data for making decisions. Meta-analytic literature related to the effect of exercise intervention on cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment was searched through PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, Physiotherapy Evidence Database and Web of Science, all with a search period frame of each database until June 1, 2024. The AMSTAR2 scale was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies. Seventeen meta-analyses were included. The AMSTAR2 scale evaluation results showed that there was one medium-quality studies (5.55%), seven low-quality studies (38.88%), and 10 very low-quality studies (55.55%). Methodological deficiencies included failure to prepare a plan and provide a registration number, literature screening, data extraction, reasons for exclusion not described in detail, poor implementation process for systematic evaluation, and failure to describe the source of funding for the included studies or relevant conflicts of interest. The overall methodological quality of the meta-analytic literature is low, and the certainty of evidence is low. We encourage the conduction of high-quality randomized trials to generate stronger evidence. Subsequent systematic reviews can then synthesize this evidence to inform future research and clinical guidelines.

Upper Limb Robots for Recovery of Motor Arm Function in Patients With Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Robot technology to support upper limb (UL) rehabilitation poststroke has rapidly developed over the past 3 decades. We aimed to assess the effects of UL-robots (UL-RTs) on recovery of UL motor functioning and capacity poststroke when compared with any non-UL-RT and to identify variables that are associated with the found effect sizes (ESs). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing UL-RTs with any other intervention on patients with UL limitations poststroke were identified in electronic searches from PubMed, Wiley/Cochrane Libraries, Embase, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, SportDISCUS, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), and Google Scholar from inception until August 1, 2022. Two reviewers independently extracted relevant data using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Meta-analyses were performed for measures of UL-muscle synergism, muscle power, muscle tone, capacity, self-reported motor performance, and basic activities of daily living (ADLs). Subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were applied to identify factors potentially associated with found ESs. Analyses were performed using Review Manager version 5.4 or IBM SPSS statistics version 27. Ninety RCTs (N = 4,311) were included (median PEDro score 6 [6-7]). Meta-analyses of 86 trials (N = 4,240) showed small significant improvements in UL-muscle synergism (Fugl-Meyer Assessment of the UL [FM-UL]) (mean difference 2.23 [1.11-3.35]), muscle power (standardized mean difference [SMD] 0.39 [0.16-0.61]), motor performance (SMD 0.11 [0.00-0.21]), and basic ADLs (SMD 0.28 [0.10-0.45]). No overall effects were found for muscle tone (SMD -0.1 [-0.26 to 0.07]) or UL-capacity (SMD 0.04 [-0.10 to 0.18]), except with exoskeletons (SMD 0.27 [0.10-0.43]). Meta-regressions showed a significant positive association between baseline mean FM-UL and ESs for UL-capacity (r = 0.339; p = 0.03), in particular in the acute and early-subacute phases poststroke (r = 0.65; p = 0.01). No further significant subgroup differences or associations were found in our analyses. The small significant effects found at the level of motor impairment do not show generalization to clinically meaningful effects at the level of UL-capacity. Meta-regressions suggest that selected participants with some potential of UL-recovery may benefit most from UL-RT, especially earlier poststroke. The robustness and consistency of our findings suggest that the development of the next generation of UL-RT needs to be guided by a better mechanistic understanding about assumed underlying interaction effects between motor learning and motor recovery poststroke. Conservative interventions for female exercise-induced urinary incontinence: a systematic review.

To systematically review and synthesise what is known about the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical conservative interventions for the management of urinary incontinence (UI) experienced by women during physical exercise. A systematic search was performed in the following databases in September 2023: the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro). Studies were deemed eligible if population consisted of females who reported symptoms of UI while participating in physical exercise, and the interventions involved any non-pharmaceutical conservative treatment to manage symptoms during exercise. The primary outcome was severity of UI signs and symptoms. The protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO identifier: CRD42022379138). Of the 3429 abstracts screened, 19 studies were retained. Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) and intravaginal devices were the most commonly investigated modalities. Only two randomised controlled trials (RCTs), both among volleyball players, compared PFMT with no PFM exercise, showing a reduction in pad weight gain after the intervention in the experimental groups only. PFMT with and without biofeedback randomised among soldiers demonstrated a reduction in the frequency of urine leakage episodes in both groups, while supervised and unsupervised PFMT randomised among athletes from different sports showed pad weight gain reduction in the supervised group only. Seven single-arm studies suggested that PFMT alone or combined with other modalities may reduce UI severity in active women based on questionnaires, bladder diaries, and self-reported symptoms. A single-arm and a crossover study found pessary use beneficial in reducing urine leakage based on questionnaires and pad weight gain, respectively. When comparing pessary, tampon, and no intervention, two repeated-measures studies found tampons may reduce leakage more than pessaries in CrossFit exercisers and women performing aerobic exercises. A vaginal sponge also reduced pad weight gain during aerobic exercises. Other modalities (i.e., an intraurethral device, photobiomodulation, and combined therapies) were investigated using case series or single case studies. While all interventions showed some evidence of effectiveness, the results must be interpreted with caution due to methodological limitations and high risk of bias. In particular, despite a high reliance on pad tests as a primary outcome, we identified inconsistencies in how pad tests were administered and interpreted. Only the effectiveness of PFMT to reduce urine leakage during exercise has been evaluated through RCTs, with some evidence of effectiveness. We identified a clear need for higher quality studies, with better reporting on the interventions, and more judicious use and interpretation of outcome measures.

Physical activity in the treatment-resistant depression and non-remitted depression: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Background The objective of this systematic review was to analyze the effects of the physical activity (PA) intervention as an adjuvant strategy to pharmacological treatment in people with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and non-remitted depression (NRD). Methods A search strategy was realized from five databases: PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. Eleven articles attained the inclusion criteria. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database and Oxford’s Evidence Levels were used to classify the quality appraisal. Results The more significant outcome for this analysis was the improvement of depression by PA or exercise in TRD and NRD. According to the FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type) principle, there was some variability in the PA intervention, and except for one article, they all were classified as excellent in terms of quality description. Conclusions This review highlights the potential of PA intervention as an adjuvant program to improve different traits of TRD and NRD. The remission of depression seems to be higher after PA intervention, showing improvements in quality of life, sleep quality, executive function, and vitality.

Physical therapy for muscle strengthening in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

People with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) can present initially muscle weakness, which is a debilitating symptom that may be improved by engaging in muscle strengthening activities. Currently, the effects of motor interventions for muscle strengthening in people with ALS are unclear. This review intends to analyze the effects of motor interventions for muscle strengthening in individuals with ALS. Randomized, non-randomized, and quasi-experimental clinical trials assessing individuals with ALS of both sexes, aged 18 years or older, who have received motor interventions for muscle strengthening considering all practices that can lead to increased strength, endurance, power and muscular hypertrophy will be included. No restriction on language, location, or publication date will be applied. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), SPORTDiscus, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) databases will be searched. The US National Institutes of Health Ongoing, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the reference lists of included studies will also be searched. Two reviewers will independently screen titles and abstracts and extract data from included studies. The methodological quality of the included studies will be assessed by the PEDro scale and the certainty of the evidence by the GRADE approach. Disagreements will be resolved by a third researcher. Findings will be presented in text and table formats. A meta-analysis will compare the effects of motor interventions for muscle strengthening versus placebo or other interventions.

Effectiveness of Therapeutic Exercise for Children Undergoing Treatment for Cancer: A Systematic Review: Therapeutic Exercise Children Cancer.

To evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic physical exercise (TPE) interventions on the physical functioning, psychosocial well-being, and quality of life (QoL) of children undergoing treatment for cancer. Systematic review: databases were searched in April 2023. Selection criteria: children (<18years old) undergoing treatment for cancer or a malignant neoplasm, randomized controlled trial design, utilization of TPE, and including physical and psychosocial outcomes. Internal validity was measured with Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. Seven randomized controlled trials were included. Most studies showed that strength, fatigue, and QoL improved after the intervention. Cardiorespiratory capacity through 6-minute walk test and physical activity levels were better in the experimental groups. No changes were noted in other variables. This review supports the importance of a TPE program during cancer treatment, with the aim of maintaining physical capacities and counteracting physical inactivity.

Effectiveness of Percutaneous Needle Electrolysis to Reduce Pain in Tendinopathies: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

Tendon injuries are common disorders in both workers and athletes, potentially impacting performance in both conditions. This is why the search for effective treatments is continuing. The objective of this study was to analyze whether the ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis technique may be considered a procedure to reduce pain caused by tendinosis. The search strategy included the PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, SciELO, and ScienceDirect up to the date of February 25, 2024. Randomized clinical trials that assessed pain caused by tendinosis using the Visual Analog Scale and Numeric Rating Scale were included. The studies were evaluated for quality using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2, and the evidence strength was assessed by the GRADEpro GDT. Out of the 534 studies found, 8 were included in the review. A random-effects meta-analysis and standardized mean differences (SMD) were conducted. The ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis proved to be effective in reducing pain caused by tendinosis in the overall outcome (SMD = -0.97; 95% CI, -1.26 to -0.68; I2 = 58%; low certainty of evidence) and in the short-term (SMD = -0.83, 95% CI, -1.29 to -0.38; I2 = 65%; low certainty of evidence), midterm (SMD = -1.28; 95% CI, -1.65 to -0.91; I2 = 0%; moderate certainty of evidence), and long-term (SMD = -0.94; 95% CI, -1.62 to -0.26; I2 = 71%; low certainty of evidence) subgroups. The application of the ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis technique for reducing pain caused by tendinosis appears to be effective. However, due to the heterogeneity found (partially explained), more studies are needed to define the appropriate dosimetry, specific populations that may benefit more from the technique, and possible adverse events.

Virtual reality-based therapy for chronic low back and neck pain: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

To compile all the scientific evidence available to date to evaluate the effect of virtual reality based therapy (VRBT) on reducing pain intensity, kinesiophobia, and associated disability, and on increasing the hr-QoL in patients with chronic neck pain (CNP) or chronic low back pain (CLBP). Studies published in PubMed Medline, SCOPUS, Web of Science, CINAHL Complete, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) up to June 2023 were searched. All searches followed the PICOS Framework. Two authors independently screened the studies found in the searches. Any differences of opinion regarding the selection of studies were settled by a third author. Twenty-five RCTs, published between 2013 and 2022, providing data from 1261 patients (20 RCTs) with CLBP and 261 patients (five RCTs) with CNP, were included. In reducing pain intensity for patients with CLBP, meta-analyses showed that VRBT is effective in reducing pain just to the end of the intervention, and this effect could be maintained 1 and 6 months after the therapy. VRBT was found to be better than therapeutic exercise (TE), sham, and no intervention (NI), showing a major effect when VRBT was used as a complementary therapy to conventional physiotherapy (CPT). Further, VRBT showed an immediate effect and immersive VRBT was the most adequate VRBT modality in reducing pain in CNP patients. No differences were found between non-immersive VRBT and immersive VRBT in reducing pain, kinesiophobia, disability, and hr-QoL in patients with CLBP.
