A meta-analysis of photosynthetic efficiency and stress mitigation by melatonin in enhancing wheat tolerance

BackgroundOur meta-analysis examines the effects of melatonin on wheat under varying abiotic stress conditions, focusing on photosynthetic parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf water status, and photosynthetic pigments. We initially collected 177 publications addressing the impact of melatonin on wheat. After meticulous screening, 31 published studies were selected, encompassing 170 observations on photosynthetic parameters, 73 on chlorophyll fluorescence, 65 on leaf water status, 240 on photosynthetic pigments.ResultsThe analysis revealed significant heterogeneity across studies (I² > 99.90%) for the aforementioned parameters and evidence of publication bias, emphasizing the complex interaction between melatonin application and plant physiological responses. Melatonin enhanced the overall response ratio (lnRR) for photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, transpiration rates, and fluorescence yields by 20.49, 22.39, 30.96, and 1.09%, respectively, compared to the control (no melatonin). The most notable effects were under controlled environmental conditions. Moreover, melatonin significantly improved leaf water content and reduced water potential, particularly under hydroponic conditions and varied abiotic stresses, highlighting its role in mitigating water stress. The analysis also revealed increases in chlorophyll pigments with soil drenching and foliar spray, and these were considered the effective application methods. Furthermore, melatonin influenced chlorophyll SPAD and intercellular CO2 concentrations, suggesting its capacity to optimize photosynthetic efficiency.ConclusionsThis synthesis of meta-analysis confirms that melatonin significantly enhances wheat’s resilience to abiotic stress by improving photosynthetic parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf water status, and photosynthetic pigments. Despite observed heterogeneity and publication bias, the consistent beneficial effects of melatonin, particularly under controlled conditions with specific application methods e.g. soil drenching and foliar spray, demonstrate its utility as a plant growth regulator for stress management. These findings encourage focused research and application strategies to maximize the benefits of melatonin in wheat farming, and thus contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.

Continuous Plant-Based and Remote Sensing for Determination of Fruit Tree Water Status

Climate change poses significant challenges to agricultural productivity, making the efficient management of water resources essential for sustainable crop production. The assessment of plant water status is crucial for understanding plant physiological responses to water stress and optimizing water management practices in agriculture. Proximal and remote sensing techniques have emerged as powerful tools for the non-destructive, efficient, and spatially extensive monitoring of plant water status. This review aims to examine the recent advancements in proximal and remote sensing methodologies utilized for assessing the water status, consumption, and irrigation needs of fruit tree crops. Several proximal sensing tools have proved useful in the continuous estimation of tree water status but have strong limitations in terms of spatial variability. On the contrary, remote sensing technologies, although less precise in terms of water status estimates, can easily cover from medium to large areas with drone or satellite images. The integration of proximal and remote sensing would definitely improve plant water status assessment, resulting in higher accuracy by integrating temporal and spatial scales. This paper consists of three parts: the first part covers current plant-based proximal sensing tools, the second part covers remote sensing techniques, and the third part includes an update on the on the combined use of the two methodologies.

The Alteration in Physiological Status, Growth and Essential Oil Profile of French Marigold (Tagetes patula L.) Owing to Seaweed Extract and Salicylic Acid Application

Abstract Purpose Medicinal plants show a relevant importance in human life and health. The use of natural substances in crop management is not only significant for the plant healthy growth and yield, but also for obtaining safe products. The study aimed to examine the effect of seaweed extract (SW) as a natural source of nutrition and salicylic acid (SA) on plant health, physiology and essential oil profile of French marigold (Tagetes patula L.). Methods Three levels of salicylic acid, SA50, SA100 and SA200, (50, 100, and 200 mg L− 1) and three levels of seaweed extract, SW2, SW4 and SW6 (2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 ml L− 1), in comparison with control treatment (tap water) were applied as foliar sprayings. The seven treatments were arranged in randomized complete block design and were replicated thrice in two growing seasons (2020 and 2021). Results Findings pointed out that SA200 increased plant height, branches number plant− 1, stem diameter, leaf area, leaves number plant− 1, plant fresh weight, and plant dry weight by 32.9, 112.2, 59.2, 34.4, 44.3, 33.0 and 56.9% (averages of the two seasons), respectively, compared to the control treatment (tap water). SW6 increased carotenoids content by 34.8 and 46.4% in 2020 and 2021 seasons, respectively. Salicylic acid at the rate of 200 mg L− 1 along seaweed extract at 6 ml L− 1 gave the highest values of total sugars and free amino acids. SA200 alone recorded the maximal value of peroxidase activity surpassing the other treatments. SW6 possessed the greatest essential oil content in both seasons, statistically equaling SA200 in the first season. Huge variations in essential oil profile were recorded under the tested trial treatments. Conclusion It could be concluded that salicylic acid and seaweed extract foliar application unveiled their involvement in diverse physiological and developmental responses; pigment formation, enzyme activities, flower induction, nutrient uptake, essential oil metabolism, and overall plant growth and development. It is recommended to use the highest concentrations of the tested substances (SA at 200 mg L− 1 or SW at 6.0 ml L− 1) for achieving distinctive improvements in physiological responses of French marigold plant.

Improving plant adaptation to soil antimony contamination: the synergistic contribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus and olive mill waste

BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the alterations in biochemical and physiological responses of oat plants exposed to antimony (Sb) contamination in soil. Specifically, we evaluated the effectiveness of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) and olive mill waste (OMW) in mitigating the effects of Sb contamination. The soil was treated with a commercial strain of AMF (Rhizophagus irregularis) and OMW (4% w/w) under two different levels of Sb (0 and 1500 mg kg−1 soil).ResultsThe combined treatment (OMW + AMF) enhanced the photosynthetic rate (+ 40%) and chlorophyll a (+ 91%) and chlorophyll b (+ 50%) content under Sb condition, which in turn induced more biomass production (+ 67–78%) compared to the contaminated control plants. More photosynthesis in OMW + AMF-treated plants gives a route for phenylalanine amino acid synthesis (+ 69%), which is used as a precursor for the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids (+ 110%), polyphenols (+ 26%), and anthocyanins (+ 63%) compared to control plants. More activation of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (+ 38%) and chalcone synthase (+ 26%) enzymes in OMW + AMF-treated plants under Sb stress indicated the activation of phenylpropanoid pathways in antioxidant metabolites biosynthesis. There was also improved shifting of antioxidant enzyme activities in the ASC/GSH and catalytic pathways in plants in response to OMW + AMF and Sb contamination, remarkably reducing oxidative damage markers.ConclusionsWhile individual applications of OMW and AMF also demonstrated some degree of plant tolerance induction, the combined presence of AMF with OMW supplementation significantly enhanced plant biomass production and adaptability to oxidative stress induced by soil Sb contamination.

Accurate photosynthetic parameter estimation at low stomatal conductance: effects of cuticular conductance and instrumental noise

Accurate estimation of photosynthetic parameters is essential for understanding plant physiological limitations and responses to environmental factors from the leaf to the global scale. Gas exchange is a useful tool to measure responses of net CO2 assimilation (A) to internal CO2 concentration (Ci), a necessary step in estimating photosynthetic parameters including the maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax) and the electron transport rate (Jmax). However, species and environmental conditions of low stomatal conductance (gsw) reduce the signal-to-noise ratio of gas exchange, challenging estimations of Ci. Previous works showed that not considering cuticular conductance to water (gcw) can lead to significant errors in estimating Ci, because it has a different effect on total conductance to CO2 (gtc) than does gsw. Here we present a systematic assessment of the need for incorporating gcw into Ci estimates. In this study we modeled the effect of gcw and of instrumental noise and quantified these effects on photosynthetic parameters in the cases of four species with varying gsw and gcw, measured using steady-state and constant ramping techniques, like the rapid A/Ci response method. We show that not accounting for gcw quantitatively influences Ci and the resulting Vcmax and Jmax, particularly when gcw exceeds 7% of the total conductance to water. The influence of gcw was not limited to low gsw species, highlighting the importance of species-specific knowledge before assessing A/Ci curves. Furthermore, at low gsw instrumental noise can affect Ci estimation, but the effect of instrumental noise can be minimized using constant-ramping rather than steady-state techniques. By incorporating these considerations, more precise measurements and interpretations of photosynthetic parameters can be obtained in a broader range of species and environmental conditions.

Ameliorative Effects of Paclobutrazol via Physio-Biochemical and Molecular Manifestation in Rice under Water Deficit Stress

We investigated the effects of an optimized dose (100 mg/kg) of paclobutrazol (PBZ) on various physio-biochemical and molecular parameters in three rice varieties (N22, IR64, and IR64 DTY1.1) under water deficit stress (WDS). Concurrently, a dose of 100 mg/kg of PBZ was applied through drenching. Samples were collected at both mild stress [75%‒80% relative water content (RWC)] and severe stress (60%‒65% RWC) conditions. Physio-biochemical parameters, including dry matter, RWC, membrane stability index (MSI), grain yield, total chlorophyll content, chlorophyll stability index, drought susceptibility index, drought tolerance efficiency, total antioxidant activity, abscisic acid (ABA) content, and gibberellic acid (GA) content, were measured. The results showed that PBZ treatment positively influenced the physio-biochemical parameters, significantly increasing dry matter (16.27%‒ 61.91%), RWC (6.48%‒16.34%), MSI (4.37%‒10.35%), and total chlorophyll content (8.97%‒29.09%) in the rice varieties under both mild and severe WDS. Moreover, PBZ treatment reduced drought susceptibility (0.83‒0.95) and enhanced drought tolerance efficiency (60.92%‒86.78%), indicating its potential as a stress-mitigating agent. This study also explored the molecular responses of the rice varieties to PBZ treatment under WDS. Global methylation analysis revealed changes in DNA methylation patterns, indicating the regulatory influence of PBZ on gene expression. The expression analysis of genes involved in the diversification of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate towards the biosynthesis of ABA, GA, and chlorophyll showed alterations in their expression levels, suggesting the involvement of PBZ in the isoprenoid pathway. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the potential mechanisms by which PBZ modulates physiological and molecular responses in rice plants under WDS. The findings highlight the importance of PBZ as a promising tool for enhancing drought tolerance in rice and offer valuable information for future research in crop stress management.

Impact of Photosynthetic Efficiency on Watermelon Cultivation in the Face of Drought

Water availability is a limiting factor for plant production, especially in Brazilian semi-arid regions. The main aim of the study was to investigate the physiological effects of drought during the fruiting stage of watermelon cultivation. A completely randomized block design with four replications and six treatments varied by the number of lateral drip tapes (1 or 2) and the duration of drought stress (0, 4, and 8 days) was used. The following parameters were evaluated: relative chlorophyll content, relative leaf water content, electrolyte leakage, CO2 assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (gs), internal CO2 concentration, leaf temperature, transpiration (E), water use efficiency (WUE), carboxylation efficiency (CE), yield, thickness, diameter, length, and fruit °brix, at 4 and 8 days of drought. Drought negatively affected photosynthesis, particularly in treatments with a single dripper and 4 days of drought, resulting in reductions of up to 60% in A, 68% in gs, 44% in E, 58% in WUE, and 59% in CE, but did not have a significant effect on watermelon yield after 4 or 8 days of irrigation. It was concluded that drought influences the physiological responses of watermelon plants, mainly in reducing photosynthesis, but does not drastically affect fruit productivity in short periods of stress.

Water use and mortality risk of four tropical canopy trees with different leaf phenology during the 2016 El Niño drought

The physiological response of plants to water stresses has been a focus in understanding plant-atmosphere feedback. Tropical forests are particularly noteworthy for their remarkable diversity and dynamics. However, a deep understanding of physiological response and associated mortality risk of tropical trees with different leaf phenology under drought is still deficient. In this study, we combined sap flow measurements and a plant hydraulic model to present the water utilization of four canopy trees (two deciduous trees and two evergreen trees) in a Panamanian seasonal tropical forest during the 2016 El Niño drought. The results showed that the transpiration (Td) of deciduous trees rapidly decreased with intensifying soil drought during the dry season, while evergreen trees still maintained high Td and increased with the increase of atmospheric dryness (vapor pressure deficit (VPD)). During the wet season, the Td of both deciduous and evergreen trees was jointly driven by increasing soil moisture (SWC) and reducing VPD. The differential Td pattern during the dry season is closely related to the difference in leaf phenology, with deciduous trees greatly reducing canopy stomatal conductance (Gs) through defoliation, and thereby maintaining leaf water potential (Ψl) and reducing water loss. Additionally, deciduous trees demonstrated a slow increase in the difference between midday (Ψl,md) and predawn (Ψl,pd) leaf water potential (i.e. lower hydraulic sensitivity (σ)) compared to evergreen trees. Evaluation of mortality risk under changing water stresses further indicated that all trees exhibited high hydraulic failure risk (HFR) under decreasing SWC scenarios. Moreover, deciduous trees displayed a much higher stomatal closure risk (SCR) than evergreen trees. These differences in Gs response and σ suggest a key role of the coordination between stomatal regulation and plant hydraulics in mediating physiological response to water stresses. More investigation and mechanism illumination will facilitate the prediction of tropical forest response to drought.

ABA-mediated stomatal response modulates the effects of drought, salinity and combined stress on tomato plants grown under elevated CO2

Plants are often exposed to drought and salinity stress concurrently but our knowledge about the effects of combined stress is limited, especially in a CO2-enriched environment. This study investigated how these three variables interacted and affected two tomato genotypes with contrasting endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) levels (wild-type AC, ABA-deficient mutant flacca). Plants were grown at ambient (400 μmol mol−1) (a[CO2]) or elevated (800 μmol mol−1) CO2 (e[CO2]), and exposed to progressive soil drying, salt and combined stress; and plant growth and physiological responses to the treatments were tested. The results showed that, under either CO2 growth environment, for both genotypes the individual and combined stress significantly decreased plant growth and water status, with the combined stress having the most pronounced effect on water status. Compared with plants grown at a[CO2], e[CO2] significantly enhanced plant aboveground biomass and attenuated the decrease of water status induced by drought and salt, but this only occurred in AC. In addition, salt stress increased the sensitivity of stomatal response to drought in both genotypes, yet it exacerbated the e[CO2]-induced depression of stomatal conductance (gs) only in the AC plants. On the other hand, drought increased Na+:K+ ratio in leaves for both genotypes while decreasing it in roots of AC plants under salt stress. In addition, e[CO2] favored ionic homeostasis in leaves of plants under salt and combined stresses by limiting leaf Na+ accumulation and enhancing K+ selective transport, but this was only evident for AC, suggesting that e[CO2]-induced plant responses were dependent on plant endogenous ABA levels. The results of this study improve our understanding on the interactive effects of drought and salt stress on tomato plants under e[CO2], which are helpful for improving crop resilience to a future drier, saltier and CO2-enriched environment.

Biochar Amendment Alleviates the Combined Effects of Salinity and Drought Stress on Water Productivity, Yield and Quality Traits of Sugar Beet (Beta vulgaris L.)

AbstractSalinity and drought are two commonly occurring major threats to agricultural yields worldwide, including sugar beet production. Therefore, this work aimed to determine the effectiveness of biochar amendment in improving soil health and alleviating the combined effects induced by salinity and drought on morphological, physiological and biochemical responses of sugar beet plants. Two field studies were established at the experimental farm of Fayoum University, Egypt over two successive winter seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021). The experiments were carried out in a split-split plot design with triplicate including three factors: 1) soil salinity, with two levels of ECe (< 4 dS m−1 as control and 10 dS m−1) as main-plot factor; 2) deficit irrigation regimes (I100, I80, and I60) representing 100%, 80%, and 60% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), respectively as sub-plot factor; and 3) biochar amendment with three application levels (B0 as control, B10, and B20) corresponding to 0, 10, and 20 t ha−1, respectively as sub-sub plot factor. Drought and salinity stress induced significant reduction in growth attributes, relative water content, membrane stability, relative chlorophyll content (SPAD), yield and yield components of sugar beet plants. Meanwhile, the contents of sucrose, proline, Na, K, α amino-N were substantially increased with increasing stress severity. The application of biochar amendment improved the soil physical and chemical properties, resulting in better morphological, physiological and biochemical responses of saline-drought stressed sugar beet plants. Biochar at level (B20) produced the highest values of root yield (95.02 t ha−1) and sugar yield (20.24 t ha−1) for full irrigated sugar beet plants in non-saline soil. Moreover, the application of biochar enhanced water productivity for drought and saline stressed sugar beet plants. Biochar amendment could be effectively used as a helpful agro-management strategy in alleviating the detrimental impacts of salinity and water stress on sugar beet plants, improving soil quality and enhancing water productivity to ensure water sustainability and food security, especially in areas of limited water supply.

Plant Tattoo Sensor Array for Leaf Relative Water Content, Surface Temperature, and Bioelectric Potential Monitoring

AbstractThis study presents a wearable plant tattoo sensor array designed for continuous monitoring of leaf temperature, relative water content, and biopotential. Current plant wearable sensor technologies often require relatively bulky substrates for sensor support and adhesives for leaf attachment, which potentially can hinder plant growth and affect long‐term measurements. The multifunctional tattoo sensor array overcomes these issues by adhering directly to the leaf surface without the need for additional supporting structures or glues. This array includes a biopotential electrode, a resistive temperature sensor, and an impedimetric water content sensor, all constructed using laminated gold‐on‐polymer thin‐film patterns. Due to their mechanical flexibility, stretchability, and conformability, the sensors can seamlessly attach to leaves via van der Waals force. Performances of these sensors are evaluated to explore plant responses under diverse growth environments. This sensor array is capable of both short‐term and long‐term monitoring, offering continuous data and detailed insights into plant physiological responses to various stress conditions.

NF-YC15 transcription factor activates ethylene biosynthesis and improves cassava disease resistance.

The nuclear factor Y (NF-Y) transcription factors play important roles in plant development and physiological responses. However, the relationship between NF-Y, plant hormone and plant stress resistance in tropical crops remains unclear. In this study, we identified MeNF-YC15 gene in the NF-Y family that significantly responded to Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis (Xam) treatment. Using MeNF-YC15-silenced and -overexpressed cassava plants, we elucidated that MeNF-YC15 positively regulated disease resistance to cassava bacterial blight (CBB). Notably, we illustrated MeNF-YC15 downstream genes and revealed the direct genetic relationship between MeNF-YC15 and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) oxidase (MeACO1)-ethylene module in disease resistance, as evidenced by the rescued disease susceptibility of MeNF-YC15 silenced cassava plants with ethylene treatment or overexpressing MeACO1. In addition, the physical interaction between 2C-type protein phosphatase 1 (MePP2C1) and MeNF-YC15 inhibited the transcriptional activation of MeACO1 by MeNF-YC15. In summary, MePP2C1-MeNF-YC15 interaction modulates ethylene biosynthesis and cassava disease resistance, providing gene network for cassava genetic improvement.

Circular RNA ath-circ032768, a competing endogenous RNA, response the drought stress by targeting miR472-RPS5 module.

CircRNAs (circular RNAs) reduce the abundance of miRNAs through ceRNA (competing endogenous RNA), to regulate many physiological processes and stress responses in plants. However, the role of circRNA in drought stress is poorly understood. Through ring identification and sequencing verification of ath-circ032768, bioinformatics analysis predicted the interaction of ath-circ032768-miR472-RPS5, and further obtained transgenic plants overexpressing ath-circ032768 and silencing STTM-miR472. The change in drought stress was analysed using biochemical and molecular biological methods. Sequencing and biological analysis confirmed that ath-circ032768, miR472 and RPS5 were responsive to drought stress, and changes in gene expression were consistent with the prediction of ceRNA. The silencing vectors ath-circ032768 and STTM-miR472 were constructed using molecular biology techniques, and stable transgenic plants with drought tolerance obtained. Further physiological and biochemical studies showed that ath-circ032768 could bind to miR472, and that miR472 could bind to the RPS5 gene, resulting in decreased expression of RPS5. Hence, ath-circ032768 can competitively inhibit degradation of RPS5 by miR472 through ceRNA. This process is accompanied by increased expression of DREB2A, RD29A and RD29B genes. Through the ath-circ032768-miR472-RPS5 pathway, the RPS5 stress resistance protein interacts with DREB2A protein to enhance expression of downstream drought resistance genes, RD29A and RD29B, and participate in the regulation mechanism of plant drought resistance, thereby improving drought tolerance of plants.

Impact of atmospheric dryness on solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence: Tower-based observations at a temperate forest

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is widely accepted as a proxy for gross primary productivity (GPP). Among the various SIF measurements, tower-based SIF measurements allow for continuous monitoring of SIF variation at a canopy scale with high temporal resolution, making it suitable for monitoring highly variable plant physiological responses to environmental changes. However, because of the strong and close relationship between SIF and absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (aPAR), it may be difficult to detect the influence of environmental drivers other than light conditions. Among the drivers, atmospheric dryness (vapor pressure deficit, VPD) is projected to increase as drought becomes more frequent and severe in the future, negatively impacting plants. In this study, we evaluated the tower-based high-frequency SIF measurement as a tool for detecting plant response to highly variable VPD. The study was performed in a mixed temperate forest in Virginia, USA, where a 40-m-tall flux tower has been measuring gas and energy exchanges and ancillary environmental drivers, and the Fluospec 2 system has been measuring SIF. We show that a proper definition of light availability to vegetation can reproduce SIF response to changing VPD that is comparable to GPP response as estimated from eddy covariance measurement: GPP decreased with rising VPD regardless of how aPAR was defined, whereas SIF decreased only when aPAR was defined as the PAR absorbed by chlorophyll (aPARchl) or simulated by a model (Soil Canopy Observation, Photochemistry and Energy fluxes, SCOPE). We simulated the effect of VPD on SIF with two different simulation modes of fluorescence emission representing contrasting moisture conditions, ‘Moderate’ and ‘Soil Moisture (SM) Stress’ modes. The decreasing SIF to rising VPD was only found in the SM Stress mode, implying that the SIF-VPD relationship depends on soil moisture conditions. Furthermore, we observed a similar response of SIF to VPD at hourly and daily scales, indicating that satellite measurements can be used to study the effects of environmental drivers other than light conditions. Finally, the definition of aPAR emphasizes the importance of canopy structure research to interpret remote sensing observations properly.

Machine vision and artificial intelligence for plant growth stress detection and monitoring: A review

The agricultural sector faces increasing challenges in ensuring food security and optimizing crop yield, necessitating innovative solutions for early detection and mitigation of plant growth stress. The integration of advanced imaging technologies with artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool for non-invasive, real-time monitoring of plant health. The objective of this paper was to review the application of machine vision and AI in identifying and classifying plant growth stress, with a focus on stressors, datasets, and the use of intelligent algorithms. The significance of plant growth stress induced by environmental variables, including temperature, light, nutrient deficiencies, and water supply were addressed and the conventional stress detection methodologies, underscores their inherent limitations, and establishes the groundwork for the exploration of state-of-the-art technologies in stress assessment. Various sensor technologies were explored, encompassing traditional RGB cameras, multispectral and hyperspectral sensors, and thermal imaging, each capable of capturing distinct stress signatures. Machine vision, leveraging high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy, offers detailed insights into plant physiological responses. Coupled with AI approaches such as deep learning, neural networks, and pattern recognition, machine vision enables the automated analysis of vast datasets, enhancing the accuracy and speed of stress detection. The recent advancements in image processing techniques tailored for plant stress identification were focused and discussed the role of feature extraction, classification, and predictive modelling in achieving robust results. The potentials of AI in plant stress physiology and its role in overcoming the limitations of traditional methods, and the use of unsupervised identification of visual symptoms to quantify stress severity, allowing for the identification of different types of plant stress were studied. Moreover, the potentials of machine vision technology and AI for real-time monitoring and decision support systems in precision agriculture were discussed. Comparison of the Effects of Gradual and Acute Treatment with Mn on Physiological Responses of Rumex hydrolapathum Plants

An understudied problem in plant heavy metal biology is the effects of acute versus gradual or chronic metal exposure. The aim of the present study was to compare the growth and physiological responses of Rumex hydrolapathum Huds. plants subjected to gradual or acute Mn stress treatment in controlled conditions. Heavy metal was applied to substrate either as one 1.00 g L−1 Mn dose (acute treatment) or the same dose in four steps of increasing amounts within 12 days (gradual treatment). Peroxidase activity in actively photosynthesizing leaves was used for monitoring induced biochemical changes resulting from Mn treatment. The number of leaves per plant significantly increased in the case of gradual treatment with Mn, but this effect was not statistically significant for acute treatment. Leaf fresh mass significantly decreased in both cases due to the decrease in leaf water content, but dry biomass of leaves was not affected, with no significant differences between the two types of treatments. A significantly lower chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Performance Index in large leaves of plants under the acute Mn treatment than in plants under the gradual treatment was evident. An increase in leaf peroxidase activity by Mn treatment was proportional to the metal dose received, but plants in the acute treatment with 1.00 g L−1 Mn had a significantly lower peroxidase response in comparison to the gradual treatment with 1.00 g L−1 Mn. In conclusion, under gradual treatment, biochemical changes related to the induction of tolerance to the heavy metal are expressed, as indicated by the continuous increase in leaf peroxidase activity after each treatment step.

Are Northern Hemisphere boreal forest fires more sensitive to future aerosol mitigation than to greenhouse gas-driven warming?

Considerable interest exists in understanding how climate change affects wildfire activity. Here, we use the Community Earth System Model version 2 to show that future anthropogenic aerosol mitigation yields larger increases in fire activity in the Northern Hemisphere boreal forests, relative to a base simulation that lacks climate policy and has large increases in greenhouse gases. The enhanced fire response is related to a deeper layer of summertime soil drying, consistent with increased downwelling surface shortwave radiation and enhanced surface evapotranspiration. In contrast, soil column drying is muted under increasing greenhouse gases due to plant physiological responses to increased carbon dioxide and by enhanced melting of soil ice at a depth that increases soil liquid water. Although considerable uncertainty remains in the representation of fire processes in models, our results suggest that boreal forest fires may be more sensitive to future aerosol mitigation than to greenhouse gas-driven warming.

Climate-induced changes in essential oil production and terpene composition in alpine aromatic plants

Alpine regions are biodiversity hotspots for endemic species with unique adaptations to harsh climatic conditions. These adaptations often involve specialized behaviours and metabolism including the production of secondary metabolites that protects plants from environmental stresses. This study examines the impacts of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and combined effects of elevated CO2 and temperature (eCO2+T) on two alpine aromatic herbs, namely Angelica glauca and Nardostachys jatamansi. These species were raised in open-top chambers (OTCs) and treated with elevated CO2 (600 ppm) and temperature (+2.0 °C from control) during 2018 to 2020. The primary (total soluble sugar, starch, total soluble protein, amino acid and proline contents), secondary metabolites (Phenolics, essential oil yield, and components using GC-MS) and antioxidant activities (superoxide dismutase and peroxidase) were measured. Total soluble sugar increased under eCO2, while starch content, total amino acid and total soluble protein initially increased but later declined in response to the treatments. Proline content and antioxidant activities were higher under eCO2 and eCO2+T treatments. Total phenolic content showed both increasing (in A. glauca) and decreasing (in N. jatamansi) responses to eCO2 and eCO2+T treatments. GC–MS analysis showed decreased monoterpenes in CO2 and temperature treatments, but some sesquiterpenes showed mixed responses with both increases and decreases. These findings suggest that changes in climate can alter the composition of secondary metabolites in alpine herbs, potentially affecting their therapeutic properties and suitability for use in herbal medicine. This study provides valuable insights into the species-specific physiological responses of plants to changing climate.
