Instructing to Impact: Exploration of Doctor of Physical Therapy Education Instruction of Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity for People with Disabilities.

The aim of this study was to explore instruction of social determinants of health (SDOH) for people with disabilities (PWD) in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) education programs. A sequential mixed methods study informed by a 5-member disability community advisory panel was conducted. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with educators (n = 10) across 4 DPT programs in the Midwest were conducted and analyzed thematically. The qualitative findings formed the basis of the quantitative phase. An online survey was conducted with faculty of DPT programs in the United States (n = 254) with the most knowledge of instruction of SDOH and health equity for PWD (n = 74; 29% response rate). Quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and triangulated with qualitative data. SDOH for PWD is an emerging component of instruction in DPT curricula. Five themes included: emerging instruction of SDOH for PWD; conceptual frameworks informing instruction; instructional strategies; barriers to integration of SDOH for PWD; and facilitators to integration of SDOH for PWD. Quantitative analysis revealed that 71 respondents (95.9%) included disability in health equity discussions primarily focused on health care access. Limited time (n = 49; 66.2%) was the most frequently reported barrier, and educator interest in disability health equity was the most frequently reported facilitator (n = 62; 83.7%) to inclusion of the SDOH for PWD in health equity discussions. Opportunities exist in DPT curricula to build on instructional strategies, integrate SDOH frameworks, and amplify facilitators to integration of SDOH for PWD. To meet the needs of the 67 million Americans living with disabilities, students must have the knowledge and skills to address the complex needs of this historically marginalized population. Understanding the DPT education landscape around SDOH for PWD can guide DPT educators to more fully prepare their students to recognize and ameliorate health disparities faced by PWD.

Building Interprofessional Competency Through A Virtual Cardiopulmonary Case Collaboration

Introduction Interprofessional education (IPE) experiences are prioritized as a key component of physician assistant (PA) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) education programs’ curricula to reflect contemporary practice. Virtual IPE is reported to facilitate clinical decision making and teamwork in students. However, limited studies exist on its effectiveness to promote the IPE Collaborative's (IPEC) core competencies. As we aim to increase IPE in our curriculum, virtual IPE offers several advantages. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a case-based, virtual IPE improved students' knowledge and attitudes of collaborative team skills using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Scale (ICCAS). Methods This study used a retrospective pretest-posttest design. Students in first-year PA and DPT programs (n = 130, PA = 48, DPT = 82) completed the ICCAS survey before and after attendance of a mandatory virtual IPE event. The virtual IPE session centered on designing a collaborative plan of care for an individual with congestive heart failure in an outpatient setting. To assess skill attainment, students completed the ICCAS survey. t Tests with Bonferroni's correction (P < .01) were conducted for analyses. Results One hundred twenty-two students (PA = 46, DPT = 76) provided complete survey data. Statistically significant improvement was noted for all 20 questions (P < .001). Large pre/post-IPE event effect sizes were observed for all 20 statements in the ICCAS. No statistically significant differences between the 2 disciplines were noted. Discussion Our findings suggest that a virtual case-based IPE experience may offer benefits to improve the student's attitude and knowledge related to IPEC during the initial year of PA and DPT programs. These data are encouraging as integration of virtual IPE experiences may affect teamwork competencies in healthcare programs.

Assessment of Gender Differences in Letters of Recommendation for Physical Therapy Residency Applications.

Letters of recommendation (LOR) are an integral component of physical therapy residency applications. Identifying the influence of applicant and writer gender in LOR will help identify whether potential implicit gender bias exists in physical therapy residency application processes. Several medical and surgical residency education programs have reported positive, neutral, or negative LOR female gender bias among applicants and writers. Little research exists on gender differences in LOR to physical therapy education programs or physical therapy residency programs. Seven hundred sixty-eight LOR were analyzed from 256 applications to 3 physical therapy residency programs (neurologic, orthopaedic, sports) at one institution from 2014 to 2020. Thematic categories were developed to identify themes in a sample of LOR. Associations between writer and applicant gender were analyzed using summary statistics, word counts, thematic and psycholinguistic extraction, and rule-based and deep learning Natural Language Processing . No significant difference in LOR word counts were found based on writer or applicant gender. Increased word counts were seen in sports residency LOR compared with the orthopaedic residency. Thematic analysis showed LOR gender differences with male applicants receiving more positive generalized recommendations and female applicants receiving more comments regarding interpersonal relationship skills. No thematic or psycholinguistic gender differences were seen by LOR writer. Male applicants were 1.9 times more likely to select all male LOR writers, whereas female applicants were 2.1 times more likely to choose all female LOR writers. Gender differences in LORs for physical therapy residencies were found using a comprehensive Natural Language Processing approach that identified both a positive recommendation male applicant gender bias and a positive interpersonal relationship skill female applicant gender bias. Applicants were not harmed nor helped by selecting LOR writers of the opposite gender. Admissions committees and LOR writers should be mindful of potential implicit gender biases in LOR submitted to physical therapy residency programs.

Do We Make a Difference? The Effect of a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Curriculum on Student Cultural Competence.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) education programs have been charged with developing a culturally competent health care workforce to better meet the needs of diverse communities and reduce health inequities. The purpose of this longitudinal, quasi-experimental educational intervention study was to examine the effects of an integrated DPT program curriculum on student cultural competence at a public, midsize, midwestern university. There is an abundance of research on conceptual models and frameworks for the development of cultural competence within health care education with many studies relying on self-perception to measure outcomes. Using the Model of Interculturalization as a theoretical framework, this study explored the development of cultural competence among DPT students using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). A purposeful convenience sample of DPT students (n = 177) was used. The IDI was administered to 3 student cohorts. One cohort had data at 4 different time points, including upon entry into the program (baseline) and at the end of the first, second, and third year. Two cohorts had data for 2 time points. IDI Developmental Orientation (DO) and Orientation Gap (OG) scores were used to measure cultural competence and accuracy of self-perception of cultural competence. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, independent and dependent sample t-tests, and analysis of variances. There were no differences between the cohorts. There were statistically significant improvements in both cultural competence (DO scores) and accuracy of self-perception of cultural competence (OG scores) for 2 cohorts. However, significant change only occurred during year 1. No other differences across time for any of the cohorts were significant. Findings can be leveraged and incorporated into recommendations for curricular revision and program reform targeting cultural competence development among DPT students.

Enhancing learning in physical therapy education through simulated patients: A meta-analysis

As hands-on instruction gives pupils the chance to apply the information and skills they gain while attending school to a real-world clinical setting, it may be beneficial for those participating in beginning employees physical therapy (PT) education programmes. Experiential learning is presently used in all entry-level PT programs in the form of clinical experiences; however, it has the potential to be included across the curriculum to improve student engagement as well as the application and retention of learned information. The objective of this article is to argue that there should be a greater emphasis placed on hands-on experience in physical therapy (PT) education programs that are designed for new graduates. Simulators, integrating medical experiences, volunteer work, public customer support organisations, and opportunities for professional growth are just a few of the various methods used in experiential education. The opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice in a setting free from criticism is very beneficial to students. Learning via experience may be especially helpful in subject preparation area when students have fewer opportunities to preparation their abilities since fewer possibilities are available. Students will be better prepared for the sort of meditative rehearsal that is necessary to make the changeover from learner to the skilled practitioner if they engage in the course of reflecting on their experiences, which is a typical activity that is conducted in combination with experiential learning.

Prosthetic Curricular Threads: Pilot Survey of Clinical Practice and Physical Therapy Education

ABSTRACT Introduction Physical therapists play a critical role in the rehabilitation of persons with limb loss/limb difference. The introduction to the skills and knowledge necessary to provide skilled care occurs during the physical therapist’s education in an accredited physical therapy program. Although clinical practice evolves as technological changes manifest and the evidence base progresses, it is unclear whether physical therapy education is adapting to stay current with clinical practice. Purpose The aim of this study was to explore the alignment of clinical practice with physical therapy education as it relates to prosthetic-specific curriculum. Methods Surveys were sent to inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, prosthetic service clinics, and accredited physical therapy programs. Each survey was designed to assess both limb loss/limb difference rehabilitation and prosthetic specific-content germane to the setting being surveyed. Results Sixty-eight physical therapy programs, 48 prosthetic-service providers, and 14 rehabilitation hospitals responded. Just over one third of physical therapy education programs reported having a course dedicated solely to prosthetic-related content. There was general alignment between what is being taught and what is being practiced in the clinics; however, there was variation in specific content and time devoted to prosthetic-related curriculum across programs. Conclusions Further alignment of prosthetic-related content and clinical practice is needed in physical therapy programs. Clinical Relevance Statement More careful alignment of prosthetic curricular content with clinical practice in physical therapy programs will increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs and help persons with amputations regain more function and quality of life.

Evidence-based practice confidence and behavior throughout the curriculum of four physical therapy education programs: a longitudinal study

BackgroundEvidence-based practice (EBP) is a foundational process taught in health professional education, yet it is unclear when EBP confidence and skills are obtained. Increases in EBP confidence and behaviors from the start of physical therapy programs to post graduation have been reported in studies that evaluated a single program or used non-valid questionnaires. This study aimed to describe changes in EBP confidence and behavior using validated questionnaires of students from four physical therapy education programs throughout their curriculum and one year post graduation.MethodsOne hundred and eighty-one students from a potential pool of 269 (67.3%) consented to participate. Students completed the Evidence-Based Practice Confidence (EPIC) Scale and the Evidence-Based Practice Implementation Scale (EBPIS) at 6 timepoints: start of the program, prior to first clinical experience, after first clinical experience, at the end of classroom instruction, graduation, and one year post. Medians (Mdn) and 25th and 75th percentiles (P25, P75) were calculated for 42 (23.2%) students with complete data across all timepoints. Change between timepoints was assessed using Friedman’s test and Wilcoxon signed rank test with a Bonferroni correction for post hoc analysis.ResultsThere were significant changes in EPIC scores (p < 0.001) from enrollment (Mdn 50.0, P25, P75 35.5, 65.9) to prior to first clinical experience (Mdn 65.5, P25, P75 57.3, 72.5) and after the first clinical experience (Mdn 67.3, P25, P75, 58.9, 73.2) to the end of classroom instruction (Mdn 78.6, P25, P75, 72.0, 84.1). Significant increases on the EBPIS (p < 0.01) were only seen from after the first year of training (Mdn 15, P25, P75, 10.0, 22.5) to end of the first clinical experience (Mdn 21.5, P25, P75 12.0, 32.0).ConclusionsEBP confidence increased significantly after classroom instruction but remained the same after clinical experiences and at one year post graduation. EBP behavior significantly increased only after the first clinical experience and remained the same through graduation. Confidence and behavior scores were higher than were previously reported in practicing professionals. Ongoing assessment of EBP confidence and behavior may help instructors build appropriate curricula to achieve their outlined EBP objectives.

Women’s knowledge of physiotherapy during pregnancy: a mixed study

BackgroundMany women may not be aware of physiotherapy in pregnancy. The objective of this study was to assess the level of awareness of physiotherapy in pregnancy among pregnant women in the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH), Kenya.MethodsA mixed study was conducted on ANC mothers, ANC nurses, and physiotherapists. Consecutive sampling was employed for the quantitative study (101 participants) and a purposive sample of 15 participants for the qualitative study. Questionnaire and interview guides were utilized for data collection. SPSS version 27 was applied for quantitative data analysis, while thematic content approach analyzed qualitative data.ResultsOne hundred one ANC mothers participated in the study; the mean age was 27.3 year. Forty percent (n = 40) had attained high school education; 54% (n = 55) lived in the urban area. Seventy-five percent (n = 76) were knowledgeable on the significance of antenatal care; however, only 27% (n = 27) attended the first ANC visit, and the numbers tapered with subsequent visits to 2% (n = 2) for the 6th visit. Eighty-five percent (n = 86) did not know about physiotherapy during pregnancy, while a meager 15% (n = 15) pregnant women had knowledge regarding physiotherapy in pregnancy. Fifty-three percent of pregnant women had no source of knowledge about physiotherapy; 22% experienced LBP as a complication during the pregnancy that would be managed by physiotherapy.Interviews elicited three themes which highlighted low knowledge of physiotherapy in pregnancy, low uptake of ANC, and the challenges facing physiotherapy education program in ANC.ConclusionThere was low knowledge on physiotherapy among ANC mothers despite the need for this service. Low education levels and staff shortage came out strongly as the main challenges. Programs should be instituted to empower women with lower educational status to seek for apt knowledge on all relevant services during ANC. Likewise, the government should improve staff establishment in public hospitals to facilitate ANC educational programs for healthcare providers and mothers.

Longitudinal outcomes of simulation enhanced interprofessional education within a physical therapist education program

Purpose: Simulation-enhanced interprofessional education (Sim-IPE) has been shown in cross-sectional studies to be beneficial in improving students’ perceptions of interprofessional teamwork and collaboration. However, there is limited literature regarding the progression of these perceptions over time. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the influence of multiple sim-IPE embedded across a physical therapy education program on student perceptions of collaborative patient care over a 2-year period. Methods: A sample of convenience of students in an entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy program (n = 94) was utilized. Students were placed in one of three groups with students completing either three sim-IPE experiences across the first 2 years of the program (n = 57), one simulation at the beginning of the program (n = 17), or one experience prior to their second full-time clinical experience (n = 20). The Interprofessional Socialization and Values Scale-21 (ISVS-21) was used to assess student perceptions of interprofessional collaboration. Scores across the program were analyzed using a Friedman analysis with a post hoc Wilcoxon matched pairs test. To assess the influence of maturation on student perceptions, performance on the ISVS-21 for students completing three experiences was compared with students completing one sim-IPE experience within the program. Results: Overall, scores on the ISVS-21 demonstrated a statistically significant improvement across the three simulations occurring within the program (P &lt; 0.001). Furthermore, students completing three sim-IPE experiences demonstrated statistically significantly higher scores on the ISVS-21 compared to students completing just one experience, regardless of the placement of the experience within the program. Conclusion: Multiple sim-IPE performed across a professional education program may be an effective learning strategy to influence perceptions of interprofessional collaboration. Further research is needed to determine the number and placement of simulations for optimal preparation for interprofessional practice.

Saudi Arabian Physical Therapists' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Clinical Practice in Diabetes Prevention and Management.

This study explores physical therapists' current knowledge, attitudes, and practice toward the management and prevention of diabetes in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional survey was distributed among physical therapists in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire included several sections concerning their knowledge, attitude, and current practice toward diabetic management. A total of 301 physical therapists (32% female) participated in our study. The results suggest that only half of the participants agreed that diabetes management and prevention were within physical therapy's scope of service. However, approximately 30% of the participants did not regularly check or ask about the glucose levels of their patients with diabetes. Only 55% of the participants correctly answered the knowledge test questions. This study found that physical therapists in Saudi Arabia have a modest level of diabetes knowledge. The findings indicate that physical therapy educational programs should address diabetes management. Furthermore, continued education is required for current practicing physical therapists in Saudi Arabia.

The Experiences of Black Students in Physical Therapy Education in Texas: A Qualitative Study.

Racial or ethnic minorities are underrepresented in many health care professions, including physical therapy. Understanding the experiences of minority students in graduate education provides insight into how physical therapy educational programs can promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are factors that have been shown to improve patient outcomes. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively analyze and describe the lived experiences of Black student physical therapists (PT) in Texas. Currently, there is a lack of qualitative research that investigates the experiences of Black students in physical therapy education in the United States. Nineteen Doctor of Physical Therapy students from 8 different physical therapy educational programs in Texas. This qualitative study was conducted using a phenomenological approach. All participants took part in a focus group regarding their academic experiences. Students' dialogues were recorded and transcribed, and the researchers identified recurrent themes. After the analysis of focus group content, it was determined that the following 5 themes characterized the students' experiences: 1) Barriers to enrollment, 2) underrepresentation, 3) implicit and explicit racism, 4) code-switching, and 5) desired image. There is evidence to suggest that Black or African American students are subject to unique pressures that negatively affect their experiences during their PT education. Efforts need to be made by higher education institutions and individuals to provide a more inclusive environment to best support those students. By gaining awareness of the results of this study, educators and students can begin dialogues on how to foster inclusivity and cultural understanding in physical therapy education. Ultimately, understanding the experiences of others can improve how individuals coexist in an increasingly diverse society, and how clinicians provide patient-centered, culturally aware care to patients and clients.

A Continuous Quality Improvement Framework for Sustainable Action and Advancement of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in Physical Therapy.

To address racial and ethnic disparities, physical therapy organizations, educational institutions, and clinical practices seek to advance diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and social justice in health care. Although our professional organizations have crafted proclamations, resource lists, developed new accreditation standards, and strategic plans, we lack a unifying framework and action tools for substantial and sustained progress. In addition, the DEI acronym is missing the essential element of belonging (B), that is, sharing a sense of purpose and feeling safe to contribute opinions as a valued member of an organization. Therefore, the purpose of this position paper is to propose the utilization of a continuous quality-improvement (CQI) framework using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles to advance DEI-B in physical therapy education and practice. The CQI framework and PDSA cycles are data-driven, iterative approaches for identifying areas for improvement, implementing interventions, collecting data, analyzing outcomes, and taking evidence-based next action steps. Application of this framework can enhance sustainability of DEI-B goals and foster progress toward the proposed accreditation criteria of the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education in this critical area. Tenants for PDSA team success are presented, and PDSA cycles are described. Addressing racism and advancing DEI-B efforts in the physical therapy profession requires bold, sustained, and intentional action that incorporates standards, strategies, and methods for measuring change. Examples of PDSA DEI-B initiatives, interventions, and outcomes are provided to illustrate how this approach can be implemented within a physical therapy education program. Using this CQI framework provides our profession with a DEI-B roadmap for advancing incremental and sustained progress.

Improving the Evidence-Based Practice Skills of Entry-Level Physiotherapy Students through Educational Interventions: A Scoping Review of Literature.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an essential approach in healthcare, attracting growing interest among both practitioners and researchers. This scoping review aims to (1) systematically investigate the effectiveness of pedagogical methods used to facilitate learning of the EBP approach, and (2) explore the perceptions, experiences, and issues related to these learning methods. The overarching purpose is to identify the state of the art in pedagogical methods, instruments, influences, and barriers in teaching and learning EBP within entry-level physiotherapy education programs. This scoping review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, with PubMed and Eric databases being searched for peer-reviewed original research articles using a combination of keywords. Excluding non-pertinent articles from the initial 465 identified, 12 were eligible for final inclusion (5 quantitative, 3 qualitative, and 4 mixed-methodology studies). A range of pedagogical methods and instruments for teaching EBP in physiotherapy education were detected, all of which having the capability to positively affect physiotherapy outcomes. Findings from this study support the significant influence that EBP exerts on the improving of the quality of teaching, together with the necessities that the involvement of EBP in physiotherapy education programs provide. Several barriers were identified, which should be taken into consideration when designing population-specific EBP strategies tailored to these particular needs.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Physical Therapy Clinical Education Experiences in Florida.

Full-time clinical education experiences (CEEs) constitute a significant component of entry-level physical therapy education. COVID-19 challenged clinical education throughout the country by affecting the availability of CEEs. Research suggested that the number of clinical education spots available would stay the same. By contrast, the number of students enrolling in physical therapist (PT) and physical therapist assistant (PTA) education programs continues to rise. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, students and faculty expressed concerns about the lack of student readiness and the availability of CEEs. The purpose of this study was to examine prepandemic factors that influenced the number of CEE slots available in Florida and the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on slot availability. Furthermore, researchers sought to identify factors that prevented a return to prepandemic levels of CEE spot offerings and recognize solutions to overcome those barriers. Finally, the researchers aimed to pinpoint suggestions to enhance collaborations between the clinical sites and physical therapy education programs. Forty-eight site coordinators of clinical education (SCCEs) from various settings and regions in Florida completed the survey. An online survey was distributed to Florida SCCEs to ascertain their perceptions on how COVID-19 influenced clinical education. The researchers used descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze the data. Clinical instructor (CI) volunteerism was the primary determinant of CEE spots available before the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of CEE spots was reduced for both PT and PTA education programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the PTA slots returned to their baseline from 2019, the PT placements remained significantly lower in 2021. Social distancing and CI availability had the most considerable impact on CEE offerings. Site coordinators of clinical education also suggested that the greatest supports needed from the academic institutions were educating students on COVID-19 prevention and providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to students for their CEEs. This article also offers suggested incentives that academic sites can provide their clinical partners, such as in-services earning continuing education units, to enhance their participation in clinical education. All clinical education stakeholders must collaborate to provide students with the required clinical educational opportunities. Academic sites should continue to provide support, training, and incentives to CIs to enhance participation from clinical education sites. Educational programs must add content about COVID-19 to their curriculum and consider providing students with PPE during their rotations to restore the number of CEEs post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Assessing Effectiveness of Physical Therapy Clinical Education Site Visits: Clinical Instructor and Student Perspectives.

Video, phone, or in-person site visits are used to assess clinical education in entry-level physical therapy education programs. The perspectives of students and clinical instructors (CIs) related to site visits were examined in this article using 2 consecutive surveys. The first included items related to in-person and phone call site visits. The second added video calls. The research purpose was to assess the CI and student perspectives on the effectiveness of site visits and explore the differences between in-person, video, and phone visits. Published literature about the effectiveness of site visits is scarce. Two recent articles explored the director of clinical education and student perspectives of site visits. Future research concentrating on the clinician perspective of site visits was recommended. A convenience sample of 104 CIs and 97 doctor of physical therapy students were recruited by email for the 2 surveys. A mixed-methods, triangular, validating, quantitative data model was used. Respondents answered open-ended questions and rated items on 5-point Likert scales. Descriptive and chi-square statistics were calculated, and themes were developed using qualitative analysis. No significant difference was found in preference of site visit method between students and CIs. CIs rated the effectiveness of site visits similarly for all methods. Students rated in-person site visits as the most effective in the first survey and video calls as the most effective in the second survey. Qualitative analysis showed that CIs and students preferred in-person visits when the student was struggling. Considering closed-ended and open-ended questions on both surveys, CIs and students would rather meet individually with the faculty member. The results of this study suggest that any type of site visit can be effective; in-person visits should be considered when students are struggling, and the site visitor should meet privately with the student and CI.

Inclusion of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Cultural Competence in Higher Education Healthcare Programs: A Scoping Review

Purpose: Lack of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) cultural competence in healthcare providers contributes to poor health outcomes in individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and more (LGBTQIA+). However, SOGI is often overlooked in healthcare education. Existing research shows educational programs in the nursing, medical, and pharmacy professions are incorporating cultural competence training into the curricula. Few studies have explored how SOGI cultural competence is incorporated into occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (SLP) curricula. Clear guidelines for training on SOGI cultural competence are lacking in these professions. It is important to identify how OT, PT, and SLP educational programs are preparing students to provide culturally competent care to LGBTQIA+ individuals. This scoping review summarizes existing research on this topic and identifies gaps in the literature. Method: A scoping review methodological framework (Arksey &amp; O’Malley, 2005; Levac et al., 2010) was used to search six databases. Descriptive numerical summary and qualitative analysis were used to summarize and interpret the results. Results: A total of 1,091 articles were included in the original search. After the initial title and abstract screening, 55 articles remained. In total, nine articles met the inclusion criteria for this scoping review. Quantitative results describe variation in study participants, SOGI populations, the type and purpose of training, and outcome measures used. Qualitative themes related to SOGI cultural competence include assessment of student and faculty knowledge, and the perceptions and evaluation of course content. Gaps in the literature include long-term changes in knowledge, skills, and dispositions of students; the need for clinical workshops, the quality of self-report in education, outcomes of training programs, and effectiveness of voice training for transgender clients. Conclusions: The benefits of including SOGI cultural competence in the healthcare curricula include increased student knowledge, confidence, sensitivity, cultural competence, and improved attitudes toward LGBTQIA+ individuals. Additional research is needed to develop and standardize training on SOGI cultural competence in the OT, PT, and SLP curricula.

Knowledge and awareness of physical therapy role in evaluating and treating temporomandibular disorders among physical therapists in Saudi Arabia

BackgroundPractitioners, including physical therapists, are not proficiently trained to evaluate and treat individuals with temporomandibular disorders. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of examining and treating temporomandibular disorders among physical therapists in Saudi Arabia.MethodsAn online questionnaire was distributed to physical therapists on different social media platforms. The survey covered demographics characteristics and knowledge of examining and treating temporomandibular disorders. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis.ResultsA total of 143 participants with a mean of age of 30 (± 6.6) years participated in this study. The majority of participants (n = 109; 76.2%) did not take educational courses on temporomandibular disorders; more than half (n = 84; 58.7%) had never evaluated or treated individuals with temporomandibular disorders. Most physical therapists were aware that they could treat individuals with temporomandibular disorders (n = 121, 84.6%). The most common evaluation methods were temporomandibular joint palpation, jaw movement during opening and closing, and palpation of the masticatory muscles (n = 56, 95%); (n = 49, 83%); (n = 48, 81%), respectively. The common methods used for treatment were therapeutic exercise strengthening, manual therapy, and patient education (n = 49; 83%; n = 46; 78%; n = 33; 56%), respectively. Thirty-one participants (53%) referred patients to other practitioners.ConclusionThis preliminary study indicates there is a fair level of knowledge, low confidence, low education, and low clinical experience for physical therapists in the evaluation and treatment of temporomandibular disorders in Saudi Arabia. More attention is needed on physical therapy education programs and post-graduate education courses on temporomandibular disorders.

Experiences of Underrepresented Racial Minorities in the Entry-Level Physical Therapy Education Application Process: A Conceptual Framework.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Black and Latinx students as they navigate the entry-level physical therapy education program (PTEP) admissions process and how they made meaning of their experiences. Existing literature is focused on quantitative aspects of the admissions process and on the applicant's potential for success within an entry-level PTEP. There is currently not enough evidence to provide the applicant perspective when navigating the entry-level physical therapy education admissions process. A total of 11 participants were recruited from all entry-level PTEPs through social media sites and national student organizations for Black and Latinx students enrolled in entry-level PTEPs. Three interviews were conducted for each participant. Their responses were combined with a demographic survey received before the first. Interviews were then transcribed and coded with deductive and inductive processes. The study yields a conceptual model for recruitment of Black and Latinx students. Factors for programs to consider include introduction to the profession, challenges and factors of support within the application process, and factors influencing enrollment decisions. This exploratory study provides a roadmap to better understand the experiences and journey of Black and Latinx students to the field of physical therapy. Findings could be used by entry-level PTEPs to provide better access to information for prospective students.

Cannabis Content in Athletic Training and Physical Therapy Curriculums in the United States

Background: Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in the U.S. and its use is becoming more popular with the legalization of medical marijuana. Currently, 36/50 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medical purposes. These changes have allowed for more cannabis-related research to be conducted. It is unknown how health professional education programs such as physical therapy and athletic training have integrated cannabis-related curriculum into their students’ training. This study aimed to identify how physical therapy and athletic training education programs are approaching teaching students about cannabis-related topics. Methods: There were 111 individuals from 40 states who responded to the survey (Males=53; Female=58), including 88 athletic training and 23 physical therapy faculty. Methods: An email was sent to all program directors of athletic training and physical therapy programs in the US with a Qualtrics survey link for faculty to complete. The 23-item questionnaire included closed-ended questions on demographics, where they sought cannabis-related information, and whether program curriculum includes cannabis-related topics. Frequencies were computed for sources of cannabis-related information and whether program curriculum includes cannabis-related topics. Results: Sixty (53.5%) participants stated they have not received information or completed any training related to cannabis. Of those receiving information or completing training (n=51), the most common sources of information were live lectures (n=23), peer-reviewed manuscripts (n=24), and social media/news (n=21). Also, 43 (38%) participants noted teaching cannabis-related topics in their curriculum. However, 33 participants reported either not completing training related to cannabis or being self-educated through the current literature. Conclusions: These results suggest program faculty may benefit from formal cannabis education in an effort to adequately integrate the content into curriculums.
