The Utilization of Coconut Shell Ash Waste as Filler in Pavement Mixture towards Green Infrastructure

Road is one of the most important land infrastructure in supporting community activities and regional development. The problem with current road construction is the increasingly limited availability of natural materials, so it necessary to innovate materials made from waste. This research utilizes waste material in the form of coconut shell ash as a filler towards the realization of green infrastructure. The purpose of this research was to obtain the characteristics of filler, aggregate, asphalt and their effect on road pavement mixtures. The research method is research in the laboratory. The results obtained are that the physical properties of aggregate, asphalt and coconut shell ash meet the requirements of The General Highway Specification. Utilization of coconut shell ash filler of 3.5% obtained Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) of 5.5%, 4% obtained OAC of 5.8%. Based on results of the Marshall parameters for the two mixtures meet all the standards of The General Highways Specification. The use of coconut shell ash as filler in a mixture of road pavements can increase the strength and durability of road pavements, as well as support the realization of green infrastructure. It can have an impact on improving environmental quality through the use of waste for road pavement towards the development of environmentally green infrastructure.

Study on preparation and activation enhancement effect of cold bonded multi-solid waste wrap-shell lightweight aggregates (SWSLAs) with low cement content

Cement production consumes large amounts of depleted resources and energy, and causes environmental pollution. In order to reduce cement consumption and realize the closed-loop recycling of solid waste, cold bonded solid waste wrap-shell lightweight aggregates (SWSLAs) with a sextuplet blended system composed of dredged sediments, mineral powder, steel slag, phosphogypsum, fly ash, and a minimal amount of cement were prepared. Through the single-factor experiment, the influences of the types and dosages of solid wastes in the nuclear phase of SWSLAs (SWSLAs-NP) and shell phase of SWSLAs (SWSLAs-SP) on the strength and water resistance were explored, and the optimum ratio was obtained. On this basis, the influence of the types and amounts of activators incorporated in SWSLAs on the physical properties of aggregates was studied, and the primary microstructure of the aggregate was characterized. Our results showed that the optimal ratio of solid waste in the SWSLAs-NP was: 40 wt% of dredged sediments, 24 wt% of mineral powder, 18 wt% of steel slag, and 18 wt% of phosphogypsum. The optimal weight ratio of cement and solid waste in the SWSLAs-SP was 5:95. The resulting aggregate had a bearing capacity of single grain of 73.83 N and a water-resistance coefficient of 0.67. After the above aggregates were treated with Na2SO4 (activator) at 2%, the bearing capacity and water-resistance coefficient of the aggregates increased by 47.00% and 11.94%, respectively. The performances were even better than that of the aggregate composed of100w cement in the shell phase. Microstructural observations demonstrated that the structure of the raw material was reconstructed under the action of Na2SO4, and the raw materials reacted with each other, and thus the densification of the aggregate and its core-shell interface structure was enhanced, which improved the comprehensive performance of the aggregate. This study represents a step toward efficient utilization of industrial solid wastes.

Eocene Kohat Formation suitability as an aggregate from Kohat Range, Sub-Himalayas, Pakistan, based on outcrop, petrographic and geotechnical properties

This paper evaluates the physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of the Limestone of the Kohat Formation. The Eocene Kohat limestone is generally exposed in the Kohat, Hangu, and Bannu districts. Kohat Formation limestone is well exposed throughout the Northern Kohat fold and thrust belt at Togh Bala village. It is cream to grey, hard, compact, well-bedded and fossiliferous. Kohat Formation has been identified into two lithofacies which are from base to top calcareous shale lithofacies with large benthic foraminifera and limestone lithofacies. The faunal assemblage indicates that the Kohat Formation was deposited in an inner to middle shelf environment. The petrographic analyses of samples of the Kohat Formation depict that it principally consists of calcite (60-90%) with a small to trace assemblage of dolomite (0-3%), ungraded quartz (0-1.5%), opaque minerals (0-1.2%) and fossils (8-40%). Aggregate physical properties like water absorption (0.88%), specific gravity (2.69), soundness (2.55%), Los Angeles abrasion value (23.06%), aggregate crushing value (11.56%), aggregate impact value (12.68%), flaky index (9.90%), elongation index (12.76%) and coating and stripping values (96.27%) conform to available standards. Our results indicate that Kohat Limestone is safe in terms of Alkali Carbonate Reactivity (ACR) and Alkali-Silica Reactivity (ASR). The facies, thin section study, geochemical, and geotechnical understanding of Kohat Formation indicate that these aggregate deposits are potential aggregate sources for ballast (railway), road, building material, concrete, mortar and other mega projects for connecting Asia and Europe.

The Effect of Mineral Composition, Microstructure on Physical Properties of Aggregate from River Punjkora and Kunai, Dir (Lower), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Aggregate is a worldwide raw material used for various construction purposes which are obtained from geological material through drilling, blasting, mining, and river derived. This study has been focused on river Panjkora and Kunai-derived aggregates which are natural sources of aggregate used for various construction purposes in Dir (Lower). Field observation and detailed petrographic studies of representative samples reveal that rivers Panjkora and Kunai pass from different lithological units of granite, gabbroic, and amphibolite. Petrographically, the granitic rocks of the study area are consisting of alkali feldspar, quartz, and plagioclase feldspar. Minor accessory minerals in granite were hornblende, biotite, epidote, rutile, zircon, and ore minerals. The gabbroic rocks are consisting of pyroxene, plagioclase, and minor to accessory minerals including biotite, sphene, rutile, epidote, and ore minerals. The main mineral phases in amphibolites are hornblende, plagioclase, and a minor amount of quartz, sphene, and ore minerals. Gneissose fabric has developed in amphibolite refers to its banded nature. The minor mineral phases of amphibolite include epidote, ore minerals, and garnet. The feldspar alteration in granite is in the form of sericitization and normal zoning. The physical properties of river Panjkora and Kunai float i.e., water absorption, specific gravity, fine modulus, loss Angeles and soundness were within the range. Both petrographic and geotechnical properties suggested that these aggregates are suitable to be used as coarse aggregate in concrete. These must be present in the recommendation section at the end.

Lightweight concrete is concrete containing light aggregate and has a density less than 1900 kg / m3 (SNI-03-2847-2002). The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect of the utilization of aluminum ash waste for fine aggregate substitution with variations in the water cement ratio of 0.40, 0.50 and 0.60 in terms of concrete compressive strength, absorption power and production cost of making lightweight concrete with fine aggregate substitution using aluminum ash waste compared to lightweight concrete without a mixture. Using the ash as a substitution material of sand in concrete by 10% and the variation of water cement ratio of 0.40, 0.50 and 0.60, identifying the physical properties of aluminum ash, aggregate physical properties, hard concrete performance including concrete compressive strength and absorption. Hard concrete performance testing is carried out at the age of 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Test objects for W/C ratio 0.4 as many as 15 pieces, for FAS 0.5 as many as 15 pieces and for FAS 0.6 as many as 15 pieces with a total of 45 test specimens. The results of the study are as follows: performance of concrete with 10% aluminum ash mixed concrete with a water cement ratio of 0.4 produces a concrete compressive value of 3.83 MPa with a weight of 1553 kg / m3. The compressive strength does not meet the target compressive strength of 17.24 MPa and the cost used to make 1 m3 of concrete mixture is cheaper Rp. 22,930.05 of concrete without alumunium ash mixed. Based on the analysis used, the use of aluminum waste ash requires another method when making the mix design and the use of light aggregate needs to be studied beforehand so that the target concrete compressive strength is as planned and aluminum waste ash mixture is preferred for non-structural concrete or lightweight concrete mixtures

Influence of Aggregates on Stripping Behavior of Bituminous Mixes

Moisture damage leads to premature failure of flexible pavements. The removal of bituminous coating from aggregates lead to the disintegration of bituminous mixes and is known as stripping. Various mechanisms and factors have been identified to play a role in the process, properties of aggregates being one of the major factors. This study is an attempt to analyze the influence of chemical, mineralogical and physical properties of aggregates on the stripping propensity of the loose mix. For this purpose, aggregates are chosen from six different quarry sites with diverse chemical compositions used for construction and maintenance of a large network of roads. Stripping tests are thereafter conducted on the aggregates using different percentage of hydrated lime. The amount of hydrated lime required for the prevention of stripping for concerned aggregate sources is determined. The research leads to the findings that the presence of elements such as silicon and potassium leads to a decrease in bond strength whereas the presence of calcium, sodium, iron, magnesium and aluminium enhanced the bond strength. Statistical tools and techniques are used to verify the results. Comparatively softer aggregates showed lesser resistance to stripping which could be inferred from aggregate impact and Los Angeles abrasion tests. The findings of the study can be helpful in the selection of aggregates with different chemical content for bituminous road construction depending upon the sensitivity to stripping. Strength, shrinkage and creep and durability aspects of concrete including CO2 treated recycled fine aggregate

Strength development and shrinkage and creep behavior of recycled aggregate concrete as well as durability aspects such as carbonation and chloride ion penetration were investigated. Except for Control concrete, natural fine aggregate was replaced by recycled fine aggregate at a rate of 0%, 15%, 30%, or 50% while natural coarse aggregate was completely replaced by recycled coarse aggregate (RCA). Two different recycled fine aggregates were used: Recycled fine aggregate (RFA) and CO2 treated recycled fine aggregate (CRFA). Compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete at all ages tested was reduced from that of the Control concrete. CO2 treatment of recycled fine aggregate improved not only the aggregate physical properties but also the strength of recycled aggregate concrete. The compressive strength reduction was 19% or less at 100% RCA + 15%–50% RFA replacement level while it was 11% or less at 100% RCA + 15%–50% CRFA replacement level after 28 days. Shrinkage and creep strains were measured for up to 300 days. Shrinkage of concrete with 100% RCA was 12% larger than that of Control concrete, while shrinkage of concretes with 100% RCA + 30% RFA or 30% CRFA replacement increased by about 25%–30%. In the creep test, creep coefficient and specific creep of all recycled aggregate concretes increased by about 20–35% over that of the Control. CO2 treatment of recycled fine aggregate resulted in up to 15% improved strength of recycled aggregate concrete, but showed little improvement on shrinkage and creep. Durability of recycled aggregate concrete evaluated in terms of carbonation and chloride ion penetration was reduced from that of the Control concrete.

Effect of Modified Asphalt Cement of the Performance of Stone Matrix Mixtures

This research investigates the behavior of Stone Matrix Asphalt mixtures (SMA) modified with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer at four percentages (1, 2, 3 and 4%) by weight of asphalt cement. The moisture susceptibility and rutting were taken into consideration in this study. To achieve the objective of this research the superpave system is conducted to design the asphalt mixtures. The physical properties of aggregate, bitumen and other mix materials were assessed and evaluated with the laboratory tests. The mixtures were prepared using penetration Graded (40-50) bitumen and a chemical named Polypropylene Fibers was used as a stabilizing additive. Fibers have been used in SMA mixtures for two main reasons: To increase the toughness and fracture resistance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and to act as a stabilizer to prevent drain down of the asphalt binder. The laboratory tests include indirect tensile strength test, Marshall stability and retained Marshall Stability test (RMS). For rutting test the Roller wheel compactor is used for preparing the asphaltic samples and Wheel tracking device is used to evaluate the rutting of asphaltic slabs. The results showed that the SBS polymer asphalt mixture gave better moisture sensitivity and better fracture resistance according to the study.It is noted that indirect tensile strength ratio (TSR) increases by 93.1 % and the rut depth decreases by 32.5 % when adding 3% SBS polymer to SMA.

Effect of Aggregate Physical Properties Observed Void in Minerals Aggregate (VMA) Value

The main component of the main mixture of hot asphalt is aggregate ie 90% - 95% of the total weight of the mixture. Aggregates on each quarry will result in different porosity values. Pekanbaru City still uses the aggregate of a local quarry that is aggregate of quarry Koto Kampar, Ujung Batu, and Sand Pengaraian, on the implementation of small-scale roadworks project. The aggregate physical properties will affect the results of Marshall testing in asphalt mixtures one of them is VMA (Void in Mineral Aggregate). The purpose of this study to determine the effect of aggregate physical properties on VMA values. The method used is laboratory testing, by testing the aggregate type and marshall testing. The results obtained by an aggregate bulk density of each quarry are Pasir Pangaraian 2.589, Ujung Batu 2.580, and Koto Kampar 2.578. The Marshall test for VMA is Pasir Pangaraian 15.04%, Ujung Batu 15.07%, and Koto Kampar 15.47%. The conclusion is that bulk aggregate bulk value values influence VMA value. The higher the aggregate bulk value then the VMA value will be small.

Evaluation of moisture-induced damage of stone matrix asphalt mixture with polymer modified binder

Moisture – induced damage is one of the most common reasons for the premature deterioration of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements. Over the years, extensive research has been carried out by scientists and engineers on this subject; however, pavements still succumb to early failure from infiltrating moisture. The purpose of this research is to study the moisture induced damage performance of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) asphalt pavements using Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt binder. To achieve the objective of this research the Superpave gyratory compactor was used for preparing the asphaltic samples and determining the volumetric properties of mixtures. The physical properties of aggregate, bitumen and other mix materials were assessed and evaluated with the laboratory tests. The mixtures were prepared using penetration Graded (40-50) bitumen and a chemical named Polypropylene Fiber was used as a stabilizing additive. Volumetric properties, Marshall Stability, behaviour to moisture action etc. were determined in laboratory. From the results it is seen that addition of SBS to the asphalt binder has significantly improved the cohesion as well as adhesion properties of the asphalt binder, and hence the stripping performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that the SBS is suitable to be used as a modifier in order to enhance the properties of the asphalt binder and thus improving the performance of asphalt in and SMA mixes.

Investigating the Effects of Coarse Aggregate Physical Properties on Strength of C-25 Concrete

The strength of concrete mostly depends on the strength and properties of coarse aggregate since the major volume of concrete was covered by coarse aggregate. The physical properties of coarse aggregates do grossly affect the workability and structural performance of concrete. This study considered the effects of physical properties of coarse aggregate on properties of concrete and the difference in strength of concrete made from four different types of coarse aggregates namely crushed basalt, crushed marble, river graver and surface gravel which were collected from different areas near to Nekemte town. For each types of collected coarse aggregate their physical properties are determined by performing necessary laboratory tests to attain the objective of the study. For proportioning of concrete making materials the ACI concrete mix design was followed. Total of 36 cubes and 12 beam molds were casted for determination of compressive strength flexural strength of C-25 concrete made from the four aggregate samples. The results indicate physical properties and types of coarse aggregate have effects on the strength of concrete. The four coarse aggregate samples have different physical properties and produced concrete having different compressive and flexural strength. Thus, it concludes, the compressive and flexural strength of concrete was greatly influenced by the physical properties and strength of coarse aggregate.

Medicines in pharmaceutical form “solution for injection” and the injection of drugs: advantages and limitations

The literature review shows that today any substance, and hence any drug, can be in such physical states as solid, liquid, gas and plasma. The classification of pharmaceutical forms of drugs, from which it follows that presently the drugs are produced in solid, liquid, soft and gaseous “dosage forms”. It is shown that the modern quality standards of drugs do not guarantee the presence of a single aggregate physical properties of all drugs produced in the same dosage forms. It is established that modern quality standards of drugs allow the production of drugs in the same pharmaceutical forms, but with different concentrations of all ingredients and with different physical and chemical properties. The ranges of concentration values of the dissolved ingredients and indicators of acid (alkaline) and osmotic activity of high-quality drugs from different pharmacological groups produced by different pharmaceutical companies in the form of “Solutions for injection” are given. From the above examples, it follows that at present qualitative “Solutions for injections” have an acidity value in the range of pH 2-12 and an osmotic activity value in the range of 0-3900 mOsmol/l of water. In addition to this, it is shown that modern drugs prepared in the pharmaceutical form “Solutions for injection” and considered to be of high quality, have a concentration of dissolved ingredients in the range of 0.01-100 %. Therefore, almost all modern medicines produced in the dosage form “Solutions for injection” have different mechanical, physical, chemical and/or physico-chemical properties that can change their pharmacological activity. Examples are given of how different concentrations of ingredients and osmotic activity of certain drugs in the dosage form “Solutions for injections” affect the severity of their local action on tissues in the range from short-term inflammation of tissues to their necrosis. It is proved that modern “solutions for injections” do not guarantee the safety of local interaction with viable tissues of the human body. The technologies of improving the safety of injection of modern “Solutions for injection” and technology to prevent tissue necrosis with “wrong” injections of drugs (by accident, ignorance, ignorance, mistake) are listed.

Empirical Formula for Assessment Concrete Compressive Strength by Using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity

Statistical practical program was carried out to establish a fairly accurate empirical formula between compressive strength of concrete and ultrasonic pulse velocity. The work has a strong empirical base, but it is firmly governed by theory. In concrete, the compressive strength of concrete is related to the type, proportion and physical properties of aggregate but it is well known to be intensely affected by the properties of the cement paste, which relate, mainly, to the w/c ratio. The other variables such as age and density of concrete, salt content in fine aggregate and curing method have a relatively little effect on compressive strength of concrete. Therefore, the program involves field testing of reinforced concrete members that their w/c ratio and cube uniaxial compressive strength are known. The results were used as input data in statistical program (SPSS) to develop an empirical formula between the compressive strength of concrete and ultrasonic pulse velocity. The proposed formula was confirmed by the results of previous experiments. Although the relationship between the compressive strength of concrete and ultrasonic pulse velocity physically indirect, the statistical program revealed that the pulse velocity test could be used with acceptable error in evaluating the compressive strength of concrete.

Study on the Effect of Demulsification Speed of Emulsified Asphalt based on Surface Characteristics of Aggregates

Aggregate is an indispensable raw material for emulsified asphalt construction. For the purpose of explaining the influence of aggregate characteristics on the demulsification speed of emulsified asphalt, the surface energy and specific surface area (SSA) characteristics of aggregates were calculated based on the capillary rise method and the BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) adsorption test. Afterwards, the effect of the surface energy and specific surface area of the aggregate on the emulsified asphalt demulsification speed was systematically studied by using ultraviolet spectroscopy as well as the orthogonal test. Experimental results indicate that the specific surface energy parameter of the aggregate is certainly related to the particle size of the aggregate. That is, the surface free energy of the unit system is proportional to the surface area A and the density of the interface unit. The specific surface area parameter of aggregates increases with the decrease of particle size, when the particle size is reduced to 600 mesh, the specific surface area parameters of the three aggregates selected in this paper tend to be consistent. Orthogonal experimental analysis demonstrates that the surface energy and specific surface area have an impact on the emulsion breaking speed and they are proven to be positively correlated. Meanwhile, in the case of small particle sizes, there is no statistically significant correlation between the physical properties of aggregates and the demulsification speed of emulsified asphalt, and the physical property of aggregates is not the main factor that affects the demulsification speed of the emulsified asphalt. On the contrary, the material properties of the aggregate, such as acid-base property and chargeability, are the dominant factors.

Evaluation of moisture-induced damage of dense graded and gap graded asphalt mixture with nanopolymer modified binder

The purpose of this research is to study the moisture induce damage performance of dense graded (AC14) and stone mastic asphalt (SMA14) asphalt pavement using Nanolyacrylate polymer modified asphalt binder. The physical properties of aggregate, volumetric and performance of asphalt mixes were assessed and evaluated with the laboratory tests. The study investigates fourteenth different asphalt mixtures consisting of NP modified asphalt binder formulations at 2%, 4% and 6%. Two types of asphalt binder, penetration grade PEN 80-100 and performance grade PG 76 were added with Nanopolyacrylate as asphalt modifier. The modified asphalt binder was prepared by adding 6 percent of Nanopolyacrylate (NP) to the asphalt binder. Both AC14 and SMA14 mixtures passed the Marshall requirements which indicate that these mixtures were good with respect to durability and flexibility. In terms of moisture induce damage, it was observed that the strength of the asphalt mixes increased with the addition of NP polymer modified asphalt binder. Similar trend could also be seen for SMA14 mixes, where the ITS value of SMA14 showed a significant difference compared to AC14 and all the mixtures exceeded the minimum requirement value as specified in the specification. Thus, addition of nanopolyacrylate polymer to the asphalt binder has significantly improved the cohesion as well as adhesion properties of the asphalt binder, and hence the stripping performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that the nanopolyacylate is suitable to be used as a modifier to the modified asphalt binder in order to enhance the properties of the asphalt binder and thus improving the performance of asphalt in both AC14 and SMA14 mixes.

Evaluation of the durability of asphalt mixtures depending on the physical properties of aggregates

This study aims to assess the durability of asphalt mixtures through their performance versus damage by aging and water sensibility, depending on the physical properties of aggregates. Twelve types of asphalt mixtures were analyzed, using 3 types of aggregates (different shape and mineralogy), and 4 types of asphalt binders (2 conventional, 1 high modulus and 1 modified). The characterization of the aggregates is carried out following the protocol proposed by Zingg and the particle index (PI) according to ASTM-D3398. Both parameters have been correlated with the performance of the aggregate in the mixture. The performance of the mixtures is analyzed by the parameters of FENIX test, such as peak tensile load, stiffness rate and deformation capacity in 3 aging conditions and under wet conditions. The water sensitivity was also evaluated according to the UNE-EN12697-12. The results show that the physical characterization of the aggregates through Zingg method is not enough to predict the behavior of the mixtures studied because it considers only the coarse fraction. In turn, the results show that the angularity and surface texture of the fine fraction aggregates, analyzed through the PI parameter, has a significant effect on the performance versus moisture damage and aging of the asphalt mixtures tested.

Assessment of Physical Properties of Coarse Aggregates in Gujarat State, India

Objectives: The current manuscript presents a detailed study on physical properties of aggregates procured from all seventeen districts in Gujarat (India), having coarse aggregate availability. Methods/Analysis: Statistical analysis carried out shows that in Gujarat State (India) having 33 districts, coarse aggregates are available in 22 districts of which 5 districts have coarse aggregates supplied from common source. Hence leading to 17 districts having actual availability of coarse aggregates within themselves. Remaining 11 districts do not have any source of coarse aggregates, and thereby procure aggregates from nearby 7 districts. Findings: Technological advancement has led humanity to achieve new horizons of innovations in Concrete and Concrete Structures. With passage of time, we have come up with partial replacement of Cement by other materials, which lead towards environmental conservation by means of reduction in environmentally hazardous materials. We also have come up with partial replacement of sand. However when it comes to aggregates, we do not trust any other material as a partial or complete replacement to aggregates. Moral of the story is, binders (Cement) can be replaced, fillers (Sand) can be replaced, but in order to replace the material imparting strength (i.e. Coarse Aggregates), it demands a higher degree of reliability. As a part of findings for the current research, comparisons have been made for each property of coarse aggregates amongst all seventeen samples procured directly from field from the particular district. Novelty/Improvement: Utmost care has been taken pertaining to the authenticity of the information while procuring the samples. Results are interesting and give a clear cut understanding of difference in physical properties amongst the aggregates available in Gujarat province, India. Results can help in purpose specific selection of aggregates in Gujarat (India).
