Evaluation of the digital teacher professional development TARGET-tool for optimizing the motivational climate in secondary school physical education

AbstractGiven the complexity of teaching, continuing teacher professional development (CPD) is essential for maintaining and enhancing teaching effectiveness, and bridging the gap between ever-evolving theory and practice. Technological advancements have opened new opportunities for digital tools to support CPD. However, the successful integration of such digital tools into practice poses challenges. It requires adherence to CPD prerequisites and acknowledgment of the complexity of the professional development process. This study explored the applicability of the developed digital PE teacher professional development TARGET-tool in a secondary school PE context. We examined the perceived usability of this tool and gained insights into the process of teachers’ professional development as a result of using the tool. Ten PE teachers from different schools implemented the TARGET-tool within their PE context for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. Individual semi-structured interviews and the System Usability Scale provided insights into the perceived usability and the process of teacher professional development. The TARGET-tool demonstrated its potential as an effective tool for supporting teachers’ professional development. Future tool improvements were identified to further optimize the perceived usability, such as simplifying complex features, providing additional support and resources, and improving (data) presentations. Using the Interconnected Model of Professional Growth as a theoretical basis, it was demonstrated how the use of the TARGET-tool engages teachers as active and reflective participants in their professional development and induces changes within the external domain, the domain of practice, the domain of consequences, and the personal domain.

Differences in the Implementation of Physical Education (PE) Learning Management Based on Years of Work: Analysis of Differences in the Quality of Quality Assurance Culture

Abstract. This research aims to determine the implementation of Physical Education (PE) learning management related to 21st-century skills based on the service length of PE teachers in various schools with different quality assurance cultures. The sample in this study was secondary school PE teachers in Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. This research employed descriptive statistics and inferential factorial one-way Anova to analyze the data. One-way Anova test results in Sig. 0.009 < 0.05 means a significant difference in the average of the three PE learning outcomes between teachers with work periods of 1-7, 8-15, and 16 years or more. Firstly, the Tukey post hoc test Sig value is 0.024 < 0.05, meaning there is a difference in PE learning outcomes between 1-7 and 8-15 years of service. Testing the two Sig values ​​is 0.983 > 0.05, meaning there is no difference in PE learning outcomes for working years 1-7 and 16 years and above. Test the three Sig values. 0.016 < 0.05, so there is a difference in PE learning outcomes between 8-15 and 16 years of service. This research concludes a significant difference in the average PE learning achievement between teachers with tenure of 1-7, 8-15, and 16 years or over. Thus, it can be concluded that the service length of PE teachers influences the effectiveness of implementing learning management containing 21st-century skills. Teaching experience plays a role in implementing teaching methods and techniques that suit the demands of 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. This underlines the importance of continuous professional development for teachers, especially in improving teaching skills relevant to the student's needs in the current era of the 21st century. The results of this research can assist policymakers, school administrators, and teachers in designing and implementing more effective PE programs in classroom conditions and prioritizing needs according to the conditions of each school.

Building a self-vitality scale for physical education teachers in Salah al-Din Governorate

The study aimed to:
 
 Building a scale (self-vitality) for physical education teachers in Salah al-DiGovernorate.
 Identifying the level of personal vitality among physical education teachers in Salah al-Din Governorate.
 
 The researcher used the descriptive method (survey and correlational) because it suits the nature of the research problem.
 The research community consisted of (238) teachers of physical education in secondary schools in Salah al-Din Governorate for the academic year (2022-2023), where the research sample was chosen intentionally and consisted of (238) teachers, representing a percentage of (100%) of the total research community.
 The construction sample included (128) physical education teachers in Salah al-Din Governorate, and they were selected by a simple random method (lottery) with a percentage of (53.78%) from the overall research population. The application sample included (78) physical education teachers in Salah al-Din Governorate. Religion (32.77%) of the total research community.
 The researchers used statistical data through (arithmetic mean, standard deviation, percentage, t-test for two independent samples, Pearson’s simple correlation coefficient, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, and the hypothesised mean equation).

 1- Physical education teachers in Salah al-Din Governorate possess a vital self-ability to motivate themselves that enables and qualifies them to accomplish various tasks in the internal and external school environment.
 2- Physical education teachers in Salah al-Din Governorate possess a state of clear balance and the ability to combine physical and psychological requirements through the physical education lesson and the ability to improve the psychological state of their students.
 In light of the conclusions, the researcher reached a number of recommendations, the most important of which are:
 1- The need for the Ministry of Education, especially physical education teachers, to support programs to develop the level of personal vitality and realize their importance in enhancing their positive job performance among its teaching staff, especially physical education teachers.
 2- Encouraging secondary school administrations to adopt the foundations and dimensions of personal vitality, especially among physical education teachers, which is considered the basis for developing the level of their functional abilities.

Socializing Influences in the Careers of South Korean Female Physical Educators

Purpose: Grounded in the occupational socialization theory, this study explored how gender interacted with and influenced socialization experiences in the careers of South Korean female physical educators. Specific attention was directed toward the gendered experiences that female teachers experienced and the coping strategies to navigate them. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative case study design, and the participants were 15 female secondary school physical educators. Data were collected through life story timelines, critical incident writings, and individual interviews. Results: Four themes emerged: (a) unwelcomed and invisible; (b) experiencing a physicality-driven hierarchy; (c) dual marginalization as female physical educators; and (d) retreating, masking, redefining, or leaving to cope with challenges. Discussion/Conclusions: The findings indicated that female physical educators experienced being dual-marginalized due to the interplay between gender and subject matter. In response to the challenges, some conformed to their gender role to be safe; however, other teachers employed various strategies to overcome the status quo.

A didactic model for formation of students’ graphic literacy in secondary school Physics education is presented. It includes a target part, a content part, a procedural part and a control part. The content of each of the specified parts has been examined. The content part includes the components of graphic literacy: cognitive (graphic knowledge) and operative (graphic skills). The procedural part presents didactic principles, methods, techniques and didactic tools for formation and development of students’ graphic literacy. The control part provides diagnostics of the level of formation of students’ graphic knowledge and skills. In this regard, preliminary, ongoing and concluding control can be carried out. This model is a very good basis for developing teaching methodology in Physics education with the aim of forming students’ graphic literacy.

Exploring Online Physical Education Teaching: What Have We Done and What Have We Learnt?

Engaging with physical education teachers who were compelled to integrate technology into their lessons during the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial to understanding how the pandemic has presented this ‘new normal’ circumstance. It is vital to gain insight into the initial experiences of physical education (PE) teachers who transitioned to online physical education (OLPE) teaching, as well as to identify potential areas for improvement in the future. This study investigated the perspectives of secondary school PE teachers on OLPE teaching during the COVID-19 lockdown, their professional development, online training opportunities and future perceptions. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study analysed data from 35 secondary school PE teachers in Fiji, using Google Forms to collect quantitative data and semi-structured interviews for qualitative data. The quantitative data was categorized by age, gender, school setting, qualifications, and teaching experience, while the qualitative data was analysed by themes. The study found that teachers struggled with OLPE due to lack of preparedness, poor Internet connectivity, and lack of emphasis on PE during lockdown. Despite their readiness, integrating technology remains challenging due to a lack of incentives, limited support, and fear of the unknown. The study emphasises the vital importance of technology in creating engaging and relevant PE experiences and recommends the provision of specialised resources, personalised curriculum guidance, and a change in teacher training institutions' paradigms to incorporate contemporary technological applications in PE.

Assessment of Pedagogical Contributions toward Enhancing Physical Activity within the Secondary School Physical Education Curricula in Southwestern China

Students enrolled in secondary schools often fail to engage in moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity (MVLPA) due to inadequacies in their physical education programs. Physical education teachers (PETs) foster student involvement in MVLPA. Consequently, it becomes imperative to identify and scrutinize factors pertaining to PETs that could influence students’ MVLPA within secondary school settings, an area that has been relatively overlooked in China. To address this gap, the present study delved into MVLPA among secondary school students in southwest China with the following objectives: (i) to assess students’ MVLPA alongside PET characteristics and teaching behaviors during physical education classes; (ii) to explore discrepancies in PET behaviors and characteristics; and (iii) to establish connections between students’ MVLPA and PET behaviors and characteristics during physical education sessions. A questionnaire survey was administered to 54 full-time PETs across nine secondary schools in Chengdu, China, aimed at gathering data on their personal and professional attributes. Additionally, a system for observing fitness instruction time was employed to document PET instructional traits, while accelerometers were utilized to track students’ MVLPA. The study objectives were investigated using multiple statistical analyses. The findings indicate that PETs do not meet the recommended 50% MVLPA time allocation during physical education sessions. Noteworthy patterns emerged, revealing that PETs with 1–5 years of teaching experience allocated less time to student observation and more time to classroom management compared to their counterparts with 6–10 years and over 10 years of teaching experience. Moreover, MVLPA time invested in lessons led by male PETs (B = −3.221) was significantly higher than time spent in lessons led by female PETs, which was attributed to PET gender. Furthermore, students under the tutelage of PETs with 6–10 years of teaching experience (B = 3.101) and those with over 10 years of experience (B = 2.989) exhibited significantly higher MVLPAs than under those with 1–5 years of teaching experience. Additionally, PET attitudes such as observation (B = 1.621) and promoting (B = 1.317) behaviors during physical education sessions were positively correlated with students’ MVLPA. A regression analysis revealed that PET characteristics and behaviors explained 21.3% of students’ MVLPA variance. This study offers insights into PETs’ pivotal role in promoting physical activity. It underscores the ramifications for students’ MVLPA in the Chinese educational context.

30 years of life of the Heureka project

Heureka (“Eureka” in English) is a long-term project aimed at improving physics education in lower and upper secondary schools in the Czech Republic. It began informally “from below” about 30 years ago. Since then, it has expanded to include three series of weekend seminars for physics teachers, along with various other activities such as the annual conference. The project’s proceedings are freely available on the Heureka website for teachers; many other materials can be found on the wiki for participants. Despite the restrictions due to covid pandemic, the project has continued to thrive, maintaining its inquiry-based teaching approach and active learning style even in the online environment. This paper provides more detailed information about the project, feedback from participants, and the lessons learned from the experience. We hope that this information will prove useful and inspiring for leaders of similar projects targeting physics teachers.

Research on the results of secondary school physics education of Generation Z in the Czech Republic

There are no uniform exit tests in physics at the end of secondary school studies in the Czech Republic to give a picture of what students take away from their physics studies. Therefore, we decided to take advantage of the fact that in 1995 the Czech Republic participated in the TIMSS international survey of learning outcomes in mathematics and science, in which for the first and also the last time secondary school students were tested, including those who had taken more demanding mathematics and physics courses. The specialised physics 90-minute test was then taken by students in the final year of four-year gymnasiums in the Czech Republic. This particular physics test was administered to current gymnasium students. Gymnasium students represent the population of secondary school students who have physics instruction listed as a compulsory part of their education in the Framework Educational Programmes. Therefore, these respondents can provide very valuable information about what students take away from studying physics in primary and secondary school. The paper describes ongoing research, its methodology and how the data were collected.

High school physics teachers’ pedagogical discontentment: The effect of curriculum improvement and professional development programs

Pedagogical discontentment refers to the feeling of dissatisfaction or frustration that teachers experience with the current state of their teaching. The purpose of this study is to explore high school physics teachers’ pedagogical discontentment within the Kazakhstani context. A survey was administered to 126 physics teachers from urban and suburban areas. This quantitative research using Bayesian factor analysis was carried out to analyze the data. The results indicated that teachers are slightly discontented about their teaching and there were no relationships between gender and discontentment, qualification, and discontentment, as well as location and type of the school and discontentment. The results of our study indicate that the professional development programs for physics teachers should prioritize enhancing their abilities to teach using an inquiry-based approach. Furthermore, based on our findings, it can be inferred that the recent educational reforms aimed at improving physics education in secondary schools in Kazakhstan have been effective.

Examining the Knowledge and Training of Secondary School Physical Educators Providing Strength and Conditioning Programming

Purpose: The purpose was to examine secondary physical education teachers’ strength and conditioning (SC) knowledge and evaluate associations between SC teaching role, professional preparation, and development. Method: A knowledge survey was developed/validated and distributed to 2,189 middle/high school teachers, with 605 providing complete data. Results: Seventy-five percent of participants reported serving an SC-related teaching role, and mean SC knowledge was 6.77 correct out of 15 (45%). Participants with SC certification, who taught an SC unit/course, who supervised an SC sport program, and who taught in high school performed significantly better. Physical education teacher education preparation, including exercise physiology and weightlifting activity courses, was a significant predictor of SC knowledge. Professional development, such as SC online coursework, meeting with SC professionals, and reading SC publications, was also a significant predictor. Conclusion: To support physical education teachers’ SC knowledge, physical education teacher education programs should include SC-related course offerings, and school administrators should consider offering professional development to physical education teachers who serve in SC roles.

Strength and Conditioning in U.S. Schools: A Qualitative Investigation of Physical Educators’ Socialization and Professional Experiences

Purpose: To examine socialization experiences of physical educators who deliver strength and conditioning (S&C) programming, particularly the development of subjective theories, expertise, orientations, and perceived mattering. Methods: Thirty-one secondary school physical educators providing S&C instruction/supervision as part of required duties completed in-depth interviews with Occupational Socialization Theory as a guiding framework for analysis. Results: Themes developed were (a) acculturation and organizational socialization influence beliefs, (b) S&C professional development is scarce, (c) S&C in physical education is a sporting endeavor, (d) blurred lines between teaching and coaching, and (e) S&C-related programs matter. Discussion: Physical educators delivering S&C programming lack adequate preservice preparation and professional development, and experience both role conflict and decreased marginalization. Physical education teacher education programs should offer more formal S&C training for safe and effective instruction/supervision. Schools should provide S&C-related professional development to maximize student learning and safety and avoid potential legal liability.

The if, why and how of fitness testing in secondary school physical education in the United Kingdom

Historically fitness testing has been identified as a common but controversial physical education (PE)-for-health practice across the globe. Despite this, little is known about the current prevalence and implementation of fitness testing. This paper therefore reports on findings from a survey which gathered both quantitative and qualitative data to explore the ‘if?’, ‘why?’ and ‘how?’ of fitness testing and provide new insights into teachers’ learning intentions, pedagogical practices, and attitudes towards it. The survey was distributed to PE departments in secondary schools across the UK, and responses were analysed and reported descriptively and thematically. Responses from 260 schools highlighted that fitness testing remains a common practice in PE, with 80% of PE teachers reporting it to feature in their curriculum. There was less consensus surrounding the ‘why?’ and ‘how?’ of testing, with variation evident in teachers’ stated learning intentions, pedagogical practices, and attitudes. Despite its prevalence, PE teachers expressed concerns over negative pupil outcomes potentially arising from fitness testing, and over 60% of teachers were uncertain or agreed that fitness testing can have a negative impact on pupils’ psychological health. Given the findings and the reported widespread prevalence of fitness testing, further research should explore pupils’ perspectives, responses, and outcomes of fitness testing, including their motivational and emotional responses to testing. Working with teachers and encouraging them to critically reflect on the ‘if?', ‘why?' and ‘how?’ of fitness testing is recommended and will hopefully help to bridge the gap between research and practice.

Secondary School Physical Education Teachers’ Understanding and Practical Reflection of Competence-Based Curriculum Design

<p>十二年國民基本教育所欲培育的核心素養為各學科的重要依據，惟中學體育教師對素養導向課程概念常未能有效與其教學實踐有效連結。依此，本研究運用逆向式課程設計（backward design），採逆向發展的設計與課程校準，引導教師朝向情境化、脈絡化、整合式的學習經驗設計，協助體育教師建立素養導向課程的深入理解概念，作為後續支持中學體育教師專業發展與實踐之參考。本研究選取5位中學體育教師及1位體育師資培育教授為研究對象，組織4次實務社群會議。資料蒐集採半結構式訪談、參與觀察、持續比較和歸納分析資料。結果顯示：一、社群運作初期，教師感到教學與評量間的矛盾，評量仍著重於技能學習；二、社群運作中，教師將目標設定、學習評量以及學習內容來回校準，嘗試化解「既有現場教學經驗」與「探究學習」間的矛盾，但對於素養導向評量概念尚未純熟；三、社群運作結束後，教師給予逆向式課程設計正向的評價，但在教學實踐上仍有挑戰與困難。逆向式的課程設計有利於化解教師對於素養導向在知識概念與教學行動經驗間的衝突，在教師社群共備之下，持續進行專業教學對話與反思，成為素養導向體育教師增能培力之新策略。</p><p>The core competencies that 12-year Compulsory Education aims to develop are the basis of the curriculum development for each subject. Competence-based Physical Education （CBPE）curriculum, however, has not yet been popularized and implemented. The purpose of this study was to examine the backward design, and structure of the physical education unit intended to enhance physical education teachers’ understanding and practical application of competency-oriented curriculum design. Five secondary school physical education teachers and one physical education teacher education professor was selected for this study, and four learning communities were organized. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, continuous comparison, and inductive analysis. Results were as follows: (1) In the initial community, teachers identified a contradiction between teaching and assessment, although assessments still emphasized skill acquisition; (2) During the community operation, teachers worked towards aligning the curriculum with learning objectives, assessment methods, and learning content, aiming to address the tension between "field teaching experience" and "inquiry learning"; however, they were not yet familiar with the CBPE assessment concept; (3) After the community operation, teachers provided positive feedback on the backward design approach, but encountered challenges and difficulties in implementing it during their teaching practice. Through the co-planning mechanism of teacher learning communities, which encourages dialogue and reflection in Physical Education classes, becoming a competence-based physical education teacher becomes a new strategy for enhancing abilities and training.</p> <p> </p>

EXPLORING PEDAGOGIES OF AFFECT IN SECONDARY SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR ENHANCED EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

This paper aims to comprehensively analyze the pedagogies of affect in secondary school physical education, with a specific focus on their role in promoting students' emotional well-being. It addresses existing gaps in the literature by integrating Self-Determination Theory (SDT), examining teacher awareness and motivation, promoting a holistic concept of health, considering the Indonesia educational context, and utilizing a pragmatic mixed methods approach. A literature study approach is employed. The findings reveal that teacher engagement in pedagogies of affect significantly influences students' emotional well-being. Need-supportive teaching behaviors directly impact affective learning outcomes, emphasizing the importance of autonomy, relatedness, and intrinsic motivation. Teachers' self-awareness and the quality of teacher-student relationships play pivotal roles in shaping emotional experiences in physical education. This research contributes novel insights into the field, offering a comprehensive framework for promoting emotional well-being in physical education. It highlights the transformative potential of education in nurturing not only the bodies but also the hearts and minds of young individuals in the pursuit of overall well-being.

2022 Revised Curriculum and Secondary School Physics Education

A curriculum is broadly defined as ‘the totality of student experiences that occur in the educational process’, which starts from the basic questions of why, what, when, and how to teach students, and can be said to be a ‘practical act of selecting, organizing, executing, evaluating, and improving learning experiences to be provided to learners.’ A curriculum must begin with concerns about what kind of learning experiences students need in the near future society in which they will live. Therefore, the curriculum is not fixed, but can change according to the orientation of school education and social changes required by the times. In case of Korea, the government has revised the national curriculum several times in accordance with social changes and demands. Most recently, the Ministry of Education announced ‘2022 Revised Curriculum’, aimed at ‘cultivating competencies’ to prepare for the future society. In this paper, the main contents and characteristics of the 2022 revised science curriculum are introduced, focusing on physics in middle school and high school.

Using Writing to Promote Understanding in Physical Education

Although often considered a topic reserved for the English classroom, writing has been successfully used by other disciplines to stimulate active learning of course content. This article demonstrates that physical educators can use writing as a tool to help students to better understand and, ultimately, appreciate physical activity. This article also shows that some writing skills can and should be taught or at least reinforced in courses outside the English classroom, and that doing so will not only enrich student learning but also better introduce students to subject matter of physical education. Practical advice for teaching the writing skills students will need to successfully complete both formal and informal writing assignments is provided. In addition, strategies for creating appropriate and successful writing assignments in a secondary school physical education course are discussed. Finally, this article includes realistic recommendations for efficiently managing, evaluating and scoring/grading writing assignments.

Capoeira as a critical pedagogy tool in physical education: from a continuing professional development program to the classroom

ABSTRACT Background In this globalized world with a predominantly Eurocentric/androcentric approach to physical education (PE) teaching, there is a need to broaden school curricula from a critical, decolonizing approach. Capoeira is a manifestation of Afro-Brazilian popular culture combining dance, fight, and play that has historical links to slavery. Because it is removed from the hegemonic culture of sport and physical activity, it can be used to develop critical pedagogy through movement and corporeality. Teachers, however, must be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to implement this critical approach in their curricula. A team of researchers at the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC) developed a continuing professional development (CPD) course to introduce PE teachers to the history and potential of capoeira as a socio-critical pedagogical tool. Purpose To explore the opportunities and challenges that capoeira brings as a pedagogical tool for addressing social issues as perceived by PE teachers who took a CPD course on capoeira (Capoeira-CPDC). Methodology This study was divided into two phases: an initial phase analyzing the TTC on capoeira as a pedagogical tool for PE taken by 12 PE teachers and a second phase analyzing the transfer of knowledge by a primary and a secondary school teacher from the same school who participated in the course. Data were collected via participative and non-participative observation with analysis of diary entries made by the lead researcher-teacher educator, the 12 teachers who participated in the Capoeira-CPDC in phase 1, and the two teachers who incorporated capoeira into their PE classes in phase 2; answers to the course feedback form; and transcripts from a semi-structured interview held with the two teachers who taught capoeira. Results The Capoeira-CPDC and subsequent incorporation of capoeira into primary and secondary school PE classes showed a wide array of benefits and limitations that this practice can offer in terms of addressing social justice, interculturality, and coeducation issues. The socio-critical pedagogical model employed in the Capoeira-CPDC, which focused on both the technical aspects of capoeira and the historical and cultural significance of the movements involved, fostered active-reflective thinking among the participating teachers. Certain challenges, however, were observed in the second phase of the study, in particular difficulties dealing directly with the subject of slavery in PE classes, a romantic-assimilation-based vision of physical activity and sport as an intercultural tool, and gender-role stereotyping by teachers. Conclusion This study highlights the potential of capoeira as a pedagogical tool for addressing social justice, interculturality, and coeducation issues from a socio-critical approach. It also highlights potential difficulties in the classroom and the importance of addressing social justice issues in PE teacher CPD courses and facilitating tools to work on cultural diversity and gender belief systems.

Exploring students experiences of secondary school Physical Education in England

ABSTRACT Background: There are many diverging views regarding the role and purpose of Physical Education (PE) in secondary schools within the UK. However, very few studies have explored PE processes through the eyes of young people. Adolescence represents a critical time period when physical activity (PA) behaviour patterns are often established. Student disengagement in PE is therefore a concern, as PE has the potential to play an important role in influencing adolescents to develop lifelong PA habits. Secondary school PE is compulsory in the UK until the age of 16, therefore PE teachers have a captive audience who they can influence positively or negatively. Understanding of students’ experiences and perceptions of PE could help inform future PE provision. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore students’ perceptions of PE throughout secondary school (age 11–16) in England, UK. This study aims to explore students’ views concerning changes and continuities from Key Stage (KS3) (age 11–14) to KS4 (age 14–16). We are also interested in the meanings that students attach to their PE experiences, identifying the social structures and processes that shape these meanings. Methods: Using a social constructionist framework, semi-structured interviews were conducted at eight secondary schools across Yorkshire, England. A convenience sample of eligible schools was used to recruit the study participants. Two participants aged 15–16 (Year 11, KS4) were interviewed at each school (N = 16). Inductive and deductive thematic analysis informed by self-determination theory guided the analysis. Thematic analysis comprised three second-order themes which were generated by ten first-order themes drawing students’ experiences of PE. Results: Perceptions of PE throughout KS3 (age 11–14) were perceived as unfavourable, owing to too much structure and social comparisons. However, perceptions of KS4 (age 14–16) PE lessons were positive, with students enjoying increased choice, less structure, and an opportunity to relieve the stress and pressure of school life. Students identified the role of the teacher to be significant in enhancing student experience throughout secondary school. However, students acknowledged that the student–teacher relationship changed across secondary school, suggesting a need for numerous pedagogical approaches to be adopted through secondary school PE. In addition, PE is recognised by some students as an opportunity to improve their wellbeing, advocating the need for PE teachers to consider employing more holistic outcomes within PE lessons. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that there is a noticeable difference between students’ experiences of PE at KS3 (age 11–14) compared to KS4 (age 14–16), questioning if the KS3 curriculum is conducive to support student engagement in PE. The results also indicate that PE teachers could widen the learning of PE beyond the physical domain and incorporate a more holistic approach when planning and delivering PE lessons. The long-term implications of engaging more students in PE is that we may inspire more adolescents to remain physically active into adulthood, and to live healthier, more active lives.
