Experimental Measurement of Fixed-Tilt Solar Panel and Vertical-Tilted Single-Axis Solar Tracker (VTSAT) Real-Time Solar Panel Output Power”

Renewable solar energy is becoming more and more vital, and photovoltaic (PV) solar panel efficiency optimization is essential for sustainable energy generation. This study describes an experiment that uses a solar panel multimeter to measure the output power of a fixed-tilt solar panel and a vertical-tilted single-axis solar tracker (VTSAT) in real time. This measurement indicates that solar panel performance varies with several external factors, including temperature fluctuations. Perform a comparison analysis in this study between a vertical-tilted single-axis solar tracker (VTSAT) and a traditional fixed-tilt solar panel. Two 50-watt solar panels' output data were measured using a solar panel multimeter. Utilizing this comparison analysis, assess these panels' real-world performance. Determining the individual efficiency of the two solar panels will be made easier by analyzing the output figures. Moreover, the goal is to compute the daily energy production produced by every kind of solar panel under standard climatic conditions.

Solar photothermal self-deicing composite films based on fluorinated polyimide and phosphorene nanoflakes for passive anti-icing of photovoltaic panels

Snow and ice coverage greatly deteriorates the power output of photovoltaic (PV) solar cells due to sunlight obstruction and thus makes a great impact on their electricity generation. To address this problem, we design a type of passive self-deicing composite films based on colorless fluorinated polyimide as a polymeric matrix and phosphorene (PR) nanoflakes as a light absorber for the photothermal deicing of PV panels driven by solar energy. The composite films were successfully fabricated through in situ polycondensation, followed by temperature-programmed thermal imidization. The resultant composite films exhibit a colorless transparent feature along with high transmittance and high absorptivity. The presence of PR nanoflakes enhances the absorption of solar light and conversion of photothermal energy by the composite films, resulting in good photothermal self-deicing effectiveness for solar PV panels. There is an accelerated melting process occurring in the ice covering on the surface of the composite films under solar illumination. The composite film containing 2.0 wt % PR nanoflakes exhibits an optimal photothermal self-deicing performance under a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 92.9 %. The use of this composite film can promote a rapid recovery of the output voltage to an ideal value for the snow- or ice-covered PV panels through fast photothermal self-deicing. This study provides a novel approach for the development of passive self-deicing materials to enhance the power output and electricity generation efficiency of solar PV panels in the snowy and icy weather.

Enhancement in efficiency of solar photovoltaic power generation with the assistance of PVC/TiO2 reflective composite applied for double-sided power generation

Solar photovoltaic power generation is a productive and environmentally friendly technique. The results of objective evaluations show that double-sided power generation is more efficient than single-sided power generation, with a possible increase of 5 %–30 %. Hence, it is necessary to identify a composite that reflects the exact sunlight waveband (300–1100 nm) onto the backside of photovoltaic panels used for double-sided power generation. Herein, two different crystalline types of titanium dioxide (TiO2), rutile (R–TiO2) and anatase (A-TiO2), were combined with plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to create composites. A comparative analysis was conducted with other commonly utilized reflective fillers, such as barium sulfate (BaSO4) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2). As a result, the R–TiO2 was identified as the most appropriate substance to be blended with PVC for the production of PVC/R–TiO2 composite. As the quantity of R–TiO2 increased from 0 to 100 phr, reflectance in the distinctive waveband of 300–1100 nm of the PVC/R–TiO2 rose from 5.30 % to 82.97 %. Moreover, an improvement in the thermal conductivity of PVC/R–TiO2 sample was observed, which increased by 59.2 % from 0.179 W m−1 K−1 to 0.285 W m−1 K−1, indicating a positive effect on heat transfer. The rheological measurement showed that the amount of reflective filler was inversely proportional to the compatibility of the reflective filler with plasticized PVC in the overall composite system, whereas the thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal stability of the composites improved as the number of reflective fillers increased. Substantially, PVC/R–TiO2 composites exhibit better performance in enhancing the power generation efficiency of solar photovoltaic panels.

Analysis of area saving and efficiency enhancement of photovoltaic system combined with thermoelectric generator

The use of solar photovoltaic systems for home, industrial, and electric vehicles has grown dramatically in recent years. It generates energy from a natural source known as sunlight, and the use of irradiation to the solar panel generates heat, which correctly restricts the Photo Voltaic (PV) panel's power generation. When irradiation increases, output power grows in proportion to input power, but efficiency falls due to temperature. Heat affects the entire area of the solar panel that generates electricity, making the panels less efficient at producing energy. To emphasise, several cooling systems for reducing heat have been introduced. Likewise, heat can be reduced by transforming energy, such as thermal energy, into electrical energy. Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) are required in PV panels to reduce heat through energy conversion. In this work, experiments were carried out to examine the efficiency of PV panels with and without TEG combination. This experiment demonstrates at of solar irradiation at 730 W/m2. As a result, PV-TEG with a heat sink reduces the temperature of the PV panel up to 6 °C. In addition, this combination improves the TEG voltage up to 0.7 V and provides overall gain up to 1.8 times that TEG alone. Also, the area will be conserved due to the use of TEG behind the PV panel, and experimental verification shows that 15 % of the space is saved, and the overall efficiency has been raised by 14 - 16 % when compared to the PV panel working alone.

Investigation of factors affecting photovoltaic thermal system efficiency

This experimental study investigates the effects of ambient temperature (Tamb) and solar irradiance on the efficiency of photovoltaic panels (ηPV). Experiments have shown that increasing these parameters, which affect ηPV, also raises panel Tcell, leading to decreased electrical energy production. A photovoltaic thermal (PV/T) system was created to enhance the ηPV by reducing Tcell. The excess heat generated in the cells is stored as hot water in this system. In the experiments, water was used as the heat transfer fluid (HTF) to lower the temperature of the PV panel. A closed loop with a 25-liter tank volume circulated the water at a constant mass flow rate of 0.0161 kg/s. The heat transferred from the panel cells to the HTF was accumulated in a 50-liter water tank. The ηth of a standard PV panel and a PV/T system, with and without a fan-cooled heat exchanger, was assessed. The results showed that the ηelec of the system without a fan-cooled heat exchanger increased by 2%. However, for systems designed for maximum efficiency, the presence of the fan-cooled heat exchanger caused a 13% reduction in ηth. Additionally, the temperature of the water in the tank increased by 50%. The efficiency of the designed PV/T system was analyzed without the use of a fan-cooled heat exchanger. The 8-hour average thermal efficiency was calculated to be 66.53%, with an electrical efficiency of 3.42%. The results are presented in graphs for better data visualization.

Enhancing Wind Turbine Stability and Performance: A Case Study on Speed Control and Maximum Power Point Tracking

It also discussed the different parts of WECS, such as wind turbines, generators, and control systems, to enhance their performance and efficiency. The research delves into the integration of speed control and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) mechanisms using a sophisticated Three-Phase Interleaved Buck-Boost Converter. The converter's unique topology, involving a back-to-back connection, shows a pivotal part in shaping the performance of the wind turbine. Furthermore, the near-zero implementation in MPPT strives to minimize oscillations and enhance photovoltaic panel and wind turbine efficiency. This technique, as explored in various studies, aims to achieve stable, efficient power output by reducing perturbations, ensuring optimal energy capture, and improving overall system reliability. This study investigates the transformation before and after near-zero implementation in various contexts. It explores the impact on energy efficiency with near-zero properties, and the performance of buildings, providing insights into the substantial changes brought about by near-zero initiatives. Additionally, the implementation of MPPT is explored, demonstrating that adjusting delta values can lead to faster stabilization times. By changing the negative delta value to -0.0005, the system achieves stabilization at the target power of 19 kW within 0.2 seconds. These findings emphasize the versatility of the Three-Phase Interleaved Buck-Boost Converter in enhancing both speed control and MPPT for wind turbines

Simulation and Performance Analysis of an Air-Source Heat Pump and Photovoltaic Panels Integrated with Service Building in Different Climate Zones of Poland

In recent years, due to the global energy crisis, the idea of a photovoltaic-assisted air-source heat pump (PV-ASHP) has become increasingly popular. This study provides a simulation in TRNSYS and the analysis of the use of a PV-ASHP system in a service building in different climate zones of Poland. For each of the six cities—Kolobrzeg, Poznan, Krakow, Warsaw, Mikolajki, and Suwalki, the effect of changing five system parameters (area, efficiency, type, and location of photovoltaic panels, and the use of a heat pump control strategy) on the amount of energy generated and consumed was determined. We also estimated the extent to which the photovoltaic panels could cover the energy requirements for the heat pump (HP) operation and the system could provide thermal comfort in the service room. Finally, a simplified analysis of the operating costs and capital expenditures was made. The results highlighted the issue of the incoherence of renewable energy sources and the need to store surplus energy under Polish climatic conditions. Abandoning the HP control strategy increased energy consumption by 36–62%, depending on the location and Variant, while the change in the place of the PV panels on the roof slope reduced energy generation by 16–22%. When applied to an ASHP in a service building, the use of PV panels to power it seems to be cost-effective.

Bi-LSTM, GRU and 1D-CNN models for short-term photovoltaic panel efficiency forecasting case amorphous silicon grid-connected PV system

Photovoltaic (PV) panels stand as a prominent solution to meet the world's growing energy demands, due to their resistance to hard climate conditions, low-cost maintenance, and long lifetime. Nonetheless, the integration of PV power into electrical grids poses a significant challenge due to its inherent intermittency. This study aims to forecast future PV power based on historical records using Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM), One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). Various performance metrics have been used to evaluate and compare the accuracy of the three models, including mean squared error, root mean squared error, mean absolute error, max error and R-squared for evaluation. The prediction of power photovoltaic based on the values registered in the last hour was carried out. Two scenarios have been investigated, with and without nighttime values to fit the models. Results reveal that the three forecasting models provide exceptional accuracy, achieving a correlation coefficient range of 96.9–97.2% for daytime PV power prediction in both scenarios, indicating a promising potential for these DNNs forecasters for optimizing energy production and improving overall PV system efficiency. The GRU, and BiLSTM-based forecasters showed identical results in terms of RMSE, MSE and MAE in both scenarios, while the 1D-CNN based forecaster showed accurate results in the second scenario, However, despite this improvement, it still falls behind forecasters based on Bi-LSTM or GRU in both scenarios.

Cooling Techniques for Enhanced Efficiency of Photovoltaic Panels—Comparative Analysis with Environmental and Economic Insights

Photovoltaic panels play a pivotal role in the renewable energy sector, serving as a crucial component for generating environmentally friendly electricity from sunlight. However, a persistent challenge lies in the adverse effects of rising temperatures resulting from prolonged exposure to solar radiation. Consequently, this elevated temperature hinders the efficiency of photovoltaic panels and reduces power production, primarily due to changes in semiconductor properties within the solar cells. Given the depletion of limited fossil fuel resources and the urgent need to reduce carbon gas emissions, scientists and researchers are actively exploring innovative strategies to enhance photovoltaic panel efficiency through advanced cooling methods. This paper conducts a comprehensive review of various cooling technologies employed to enhance the performance of PV panels, encompassing water-based, air-based, and phase-change materials, alongside novel cooling approaches. This study collects and assesses data from recent studies on cooling the PV panel, considering both environmental and economic factors, illustrating the importance of cooling methods on photovoltaic panel efficiency. Among the investigated cooling methods, the thermoelectric cooling method emerges as a promising solution, demonstrating noteworthy improvements in energy efficiency and a positive environmental footprint while maintaining economic viability. As future work, studies should be made at the level of different periods of time throughout the years and for longer periods. This research contributes to the ongoing effort to identify effective cooling strategies, ultimately advancing electricity generation from photovoltaic panels and promoting the adoption of sustainable energy systems.

Integrated photovoltaic-thermal system utilizing front surface water cooling technique: An experimental performance response

In the realm of photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) systems, optimizing operating temperatures for photovoltaic (PV) panels is a challenge. This study introduces a novel solution: a sprayed water PVT system that simultaneously harnesses energy and electricity. The aim is twofold: generate electricity through PV panels and produce hot water via a flat plate collector, using an innovative cooling mechanism. Water sprayed onto the PV panel's surface flows to a collector for storage. With varied flow rates, optimal panel efficiency occurs at a 45⁰ tilt angle, accompanied by lower collector outlet temperatures at higher flow rates. The collector achieves a peak thermal efficiency of 70.6 %, producing hot water at 84.6 °C. Notably, a significant PV panel efficiency enhancement, up to 16.78 %, especially at 1.56 L/min flow rate, is observed. The cooling technique consistently reduces panel temperatures from 45.08 °C to 34.12 °C. A self-cleaning spray mechanism improves efficiency by 2.53 %, resulting in an overall system efficiency of 83.3 %. This research offers an innovative approach to enhance energy generation and electricity in PVT systems, promising sustainable energy optimization.

A comprehensive experimental study of cooling photovoltaic panels using phase change materials under free and forced convection – Experiments and transient analysis

Solar radiation is captured by photovoltaic (PV) panels, which use it to create electricity. However, an overabundance of photons striking the PV's surface raises its temperature, which lowers its efficiency. These days, cooling solar panels is very important, and research on these methods is widely available in the literature. Thus, the study field's problems truly lie in developing new or improved methods for doing the same tasks. The goal of this work is to further boost the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) panels beyond what can be achieved with PCM and free/forced convection alone. To do this, phase change materials (PCM) are cooled using both free and forced convection. In accordance with the latitude of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, four cooling techniques are experimentally investigated. A photovoltaic panel using phase-change material (PCM) with copper and aluminum wires in a 70 %–20 %–10 % mass ratio (CPCM-PV), respectively, is the first cooling method. In the second approach, four 5 cm long fins are fixed under free convection using the same combination of aluminum fins inside the PCM container while preserving the same ratio (IEF-PCM-Free-PV). The third technique is the same as the second but with forced convection (IEF-PCM-Forced-PV), while the fourth technique uses an aluminum finned plate with 16 finned plates under forced convection (F-Forced-PV). IEF-PCM-Forced-PV showed the most relative increases in efficiency rate of energy dissipated of 20.36 % and 62.24 %, respectively, as compared to the regular PV panel, according to the results. F-Forced-PV, IEF-PCM-Free-PV, and CPCM-PV showed an increase in relative efficiency of 16.87 %, 6.3 %, and 3.9 % respectively, and correspondingly, these enhancements were accompanied by an increase in energy dissipation of 55.80 %, 44.85 %, and 41.18 % for each system. Economically, the IEF-PCM-Forced-PV had the highest total yearly savings of $17.87 with a payback period of 1.9 years. An appropriate transient energy balance is conducted and permitted to demonstrate clearly the transient behavior of the system under the various cooling techniques. Finally, the percentage of enhancement using the newly suggested composite PCM with internal and external fins under forced convection is compared to the enhancement found in the literature for various classical techniques and shows greater potential for further enhancement of the PV performance.

Impact of hybrid nano PCM (paraffin wax with Al2O3 and ZnO nanoparticles) on photovoltaic thermal system: Energy, exergy, exergoeconomic and enviroeconomic analysis

Global renewable energy efforts place a significant preference on substantial solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Photovoltaic thermal (PVT) systems are the upgraded version of PV modules that concurrently produce both electricity and heat. Hybrid nano-particles (2.0 wt % ZnO and 2.0 wt % Al2O3) into the phase change material (PCM) known as HNPCM system has been introduced in this current study for enhancing the electrical and thermal performance of the PVT system by improving the thermophysical properties of paraffin wax as used for passive cooling. Three PV systems were compared in terms of performance: a conventional PV system, a PVT system using paraffin wax as a PCM (PVT/PCM), and a PVT system with 2.0 wt % of Al2O3 and ZnO in PCM (PVT/HNPCM). Upon investigation, the PVT/HNPCM system under outdoor environmental condition shows that the inclusion of different nanoparticles in PCM led to improvements in thermal and overall efficiency of 17.32 % and 13.82 % compared to PVT/PCM, respectively. This results in increase of electrical efficiency of 34.84 % when compared to conventional PV panel and incremental peak exergy efficiency of 36.47 %. Besides, for PVT/HNPCM, cost of electricity production ($/kWh) is almost 16.67 % less than the conventional PV configuration and the payback time is about 2.1 years on the overall exergy basis. Additionally, PVT/HNPCM system exhibits the long-term life cycle conversion efficiency compared to conventional PV panel and maximum sustainability index of 1.21 has been also found. Finally, the conclusion can be drawn positively for PVT/HNPCM as the most effective system from the exergy efficiency, exergy cost, and CO2 avoidance rates point of view.

Exploring cooling of PV panels based on metallic and nonmetallic nanofluids: An experimental study

An outdoor experimental study investigated the cooling of photovoltaic (PV) panels using nano-fluids containing metallic (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) and non-metallic (ferro-magnetite, Fe3O4) particles. The study compared the solar power output and efficiency of PV panels cooled by various nano-fluids, as well as uncooled and water-cooled systems, under laminar and turbulent flow conditions with flow rates ranging from 1000 to 7000 mL/min. Aluminum heat exchangers (460 mm in length, 10 mm in outer diameter, and 10 mm in thickness) were attached to the rear surface of each PV cell, enabling the analysis of cell temperature, thermal performance, and electrical performance. The use of CaCO3 and Fe3O4 nano-fluids notably reduced the average cell surface temperature compared to uncooled and water-cooled systems. Fe3O4 nano-fluid, in particular, excelled due to its high thermal conductivity, which resulted in an improved heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number when compared to air and water cooling. The electrical performance, power output, and efficiency of the PV cells all improved when cooling systems were employed in contrast to the uncooled condition. Among the available cooling methods, Fe3O4 nano-fluid stood out for its superior results, thanks to its exceptional thermal conductivity.

Small Scale Models of Solar Tracking Systems

Increasing the efficiency of photovoltaic panels using solar tracking systems is a current topic. The use of solar tracking systems is a solution, especially in low power applications. The paper presents two types of solar tracking systems, one based on astronomical data, and the other based on tracking the point of maximum illumination. Both systems are made on small scale for educational purposes. These systems can be used for the analysis of methods, principles and particularities in order to use them in practical applications. For the two experimental models of solar tracking made, the hardware and software structure are presented. To orient the photovoltaic panels in the two directions (East-West, respectively South-North) DC motors or stepper motors are used. One motor is used for each axis of rotation. Both structures have the control part composed of a microcontroller development system. This control method has the advantage that can significantly reduce the number of electronic components as well as the cost of designing and building of equipment. For the solar tracking system based on astronomical data, a remote monitoring and control system has been achieved. It uses a friendly graphic interface made on PC with the help of Visual Basic software. Both models were tested and the experimental results showed correct operation according to the imposed protocol. Finally, an energy efficiency analysis was done and it was found that the PV panel that uses the tracking systems produces 35% more energy compared to a fixed PV panel.

Solving the tasks of finding the maximum in the field of renewable energy sources. The scientific work is devoted to the application of genetic algorithms to solve the problems of optimizing the efficiency of solar energy in renewable energy sources. The main focus of the work is on finding the maximum parameter values in solar power plants. The relevance of the study is due to the constant growth in the popularity of the use of solar energy and the need to increase its conversion efficiency. The application of genetic algorithms in solving the tasks of finding the maximum in solar energy is an important step in achieving optimal configurations of FES and ensuring the stable functioning of this type of power plants in general. The work includes the analysis of the influence of various parameters on the efficiency of photovoltaic panels and the development of optimal strategies for the use of genetic algorithms to improve their performance. The obtained results open up new opportunities for increasing the competitiveness of FES in the field of renewable energy sources. The genetic algorithm is recognized for its ability to provide quality results and work faster than the selection method. This method is widely used in world practice [6]. Modern algorithms for tasks where the size of the search space is so large that the exact finding of the optimal solution becomes impossible, then in such cases heuristic solutions meet the requirements, have also been studied. One of the goals of the research is the analysis of optimization algorithms and their applicability for solving the optimization tasks of solar energy. Genetic algorithms, although effective, have their limitations - in many cases, they tend to converge to a local optimum (or even an arbitrary point), instead of a global one. This indicates their inability to decide how to maintain high fitness in the short term. Additionally, the complication is related to how to protect evolutionarily formed parts from destructive mutations [7, 9]. In the process of research, the specified limitations were taken into account and mechanisms were developed to reduce their negative impact. The algorithm considered in the work is not only resistant to local minima, but also, due to the internal parallelism expressed in working with individual solutions, rather than whole classes of solutions, provides a relatively fast search for the optimal solution. A numerical study on the performance of a hybrid ventilation and power generation system

Ventilation, cooling and power are essential requirements of buildings. Integration of solar chimney, earth-air heat exchanger and photovoltaic panel forms a new hybridsystem, which is able to provide simultaneous ventilation, cooling capacity and electricity in an effective manner for buildings. The contribution of this study is to quantitatively identify the thermal and electrical performances of the hybrid system using a comprehensive validated numerical model. In addition, a parametric study was also performed to examine the effect of the number of EAHE pipe and solar collector on the performance of the hybrid system in order to further enhance the system performance. The results revealed that the peak daytime ventilation of the proposed hybrid system is reduced by 22.05 % compared to the ventilation system of solar chimney integrated with earth-air heat exchanger, and the outlet air temperature is reduced by 0.12 °C in average; the indoor temperatures for the hybrid and ventilation systems are slightly different. Moreover, the minimum electrical efficiency of hybrid system is 1.34 % higher than that for stand-alone photovoltaic system. Increasing the number of earth-air heat exchangers leads to more than 36.43 % increase in peak ventilation volume and 3.7 % improvement in electrical efficiency. In addition, increasing the quantity of solar chimney-photovoltaic modules can effectively increase the induced ventilation volume, and the outlet air temperature, but has slight effect on the temperature and electrical efficiency of photovoltaic panel. Therefore, the hybrid system not only can supply appropriate ventilation but also can generate electric power to buildings. The findings provide a preliminary guidance for optimizing design of the hybrid system.

An experimental analysis of a hybrid photovoltaic thermal system through parallel water pipe integration

The global research community has increasingly focused on sustainable energy solutions to combat the environmental challenges posed by extensive fossil fuel consumption. This paper presents a new simple approach to enhance the electric efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) panels through efficient cooling techniques using simple parallel water pipes on the back of the PV panel. Additionally, the waste heat generated during this process is harnessed as a valuable heat source for residential hot water systems. Experimental measurements were conducted on both the reference PV panels without cooling and the PV/T system equipped with cooling pipes. A comprehensive energy analysis was performed to compare their performance. The results demonstrate that the cooled PV/T system exhibits consistently higher electric efficiency due to effective cooling by about 10%, resulting in surface temperature reduction and enhanced performance. The system also demonstrates a significant improvement in waste heat recovery, making it a practical and promising choice for sustainable energy applications.
