PromptNet: Prompt Learning for Roof Photovoltaic Potential Assessment

An increasing number of works have been proposed to use remote sensing images to assess the potential for rooftop Photovoltaic (PV) energy development in buildings. However, most methods focus mainly on the remote sensing images themselves, ignoring the key prior information of building type. Thus most works with Deeplabv3+ as backbone present suboptimal performance. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel approach PromptNet that embeds the building types as prior knowledge and feed it into prompt learning for predict roof PV energy Potential. Specifically, a pre-trained semantic segmentation network, Deeplabv3+, is first constructed to detect potential building rooftops from remote sensing images. Then, the buildings are categorized into five types based on their functions, including government buildings, public buildings, industrial and commercial factories, agricultural housing, and other building types. Finally, by using prompt learning, the prior knowledge of buildings is established and associated with the rooftops that are suitable for PV energy development. This is embedded into a deep learning network, filtering out unsuitable rooftops, and significantly improving the accuracy of rooftop PV energy development. Comprehensive experiments show that the proposed method achieves 81.18% accuracy and 76.90% IOU in predicting the potential for rooftop PV energy, a 10.97% improvement in IoU compared to the backbone without prior knowledge.

Impact of stratospheric aerosol injection on photovoltaic energy potential over Nigeria

This study evaluates the impact of the stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) technique for solar radiation management (SRM) on the potential of photovoltaic energy in four climatic regions throughout Nigeria. The analysis showed that the index of agreement had values of 0.90 in the Sahel, 0.98 in the Guinea Savannah, 0.97 in the rainforest, and 0.82 in the coastal regions. Other validation metrics used also showed similar trends across the climatic regions in Nigeria. The projected analysis of the impact on photovoltaic energy generation between 2035 and 2069 indicated potential gains of + 5.20 in the Sahel, + 3.60 in the Guinea Savannah, and + 3.40 in the rainforest, but a decline of − 3.20 in the coastal region, all values in watts per square meters. In conclusion, this study reveals that the implementation of the SAI approach for solar radiation management would have a relatively gainful influence on solar power generation in the Sahel, the Guinea Savannah, the rainforest but declined effect in the coastal region. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the influence of solar radiation management and renewable energy generation in different climatic zones across Nigeria.

How to Decarbonize Greece by Comparing Wind and PV Energy: A Land Eligibility Analysis

To achieve sustainable development, the energy transition from lignite burning to renewable energy resources for electric power generation is essential for Greece. Wind and solar energy have emerged as significant sources in this transition. Surprisingly, numerous studies have examined the potential for onshore wind based on land eligibility, while few studies on open-field photovoltaic (PV) installations have been conducted. Therefore, based on the Specific Framework for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development for Renewable Energy Sources (SFSPSD-RES), along with insights from previous relevant studies, this work conducts a land eligibility analysis of onshore wind and open-field PV installations in Greece using the software Geospatial Land Availability for Energy Systems (GLAES 1.2.1) and ArcGIS 10.2. Additionally, through an in-depth exploration of wind and solar PV energy potential in decommissioned lignite mines integrated with wind power density (WPD) and global horizontal irradiation (GHI) maps, this study compares the suitability of wind versus solar as energy sources for the decarbonization of Greece. Overall, despite the greater spatial eligibility for onshore wind turbines compared to open-field PV power plants, the relatively lower wind energy potential and operational limitations of wind turbines lead to the study’s conclusion that solar energy (PV) is more suitable for the decarbonization of Greece.

A multi-objective optimization framework for designing urban block forms considering daylight, energy consumption, and photovoltaic energy potential

Urban form significantly influences building energy consumption. However, most research has primarily focused on quantifying the relationship between the two factors, with limited exploration of optimizing urban form to enhance building energy performance. Moreover, studies often fail to consider multiple performance objectives simultaneously. This study proposes a multi-objective optimization framework for early urban design stage to improve energy and environmental performance in residential block layouts. The performance objectives include energy consumption, photovoltaic energy potential, and sunlight hours. The framework is implemented using the parametric platform Rhino & Grasshopper, where a parametric model controls the layout of blocks. Ladybug Tools plugin is employed for performance simulation, and Wallacei is used for optimization. An ideal residential block in Jianhu City, China, is taken as a case study. The study generates a total of 1896 valid solutions, including 58 Pareto solutions. The performance of the Pareto solutions demonstrates considerable improvements, indicating the effectiveness of optimizing urban form for enhancing energy and environmental performance. Compared to the initial solution, a typical Pareto solution showcases a 1.5% reduction in energy consumption, a 52.7% increase in photovoltaic energy potential, and a 50% increase in sunlight hours. These findings underscore the pivotal role of urban block morphology in influencing energy consumption, photovoltaic potential, and daylighting. The proposed multi-objective framework in this study enhances and facilitates sustainable block form design, which is expected to provide technical support for energy-efficient or low-carbon urban design.

Cost-effectiveness and minimum requirements of nZEB for residential buildings under the new Spanish Technical Building Code

This paper evaluates a parametric analysis towards compliance with the nZEB standard, which in Spain is defined by the latest update of the Technical Building Code. This regulation is critically assessed regarding its ability to promote the concept of cost optimization, promote renewable energy sources and minimize primary energy consumption in the residential sector. To this end, a virtual building was defined and multiple designs were evaluated using DesignBuilder software. A set of 170 alternative scenarios was established and parametrically evaluated for five cities representing the five climatic zones of inland Spain (Bilbao, Burgos, Seville, Madrid and Almeria). The results were evaluated focusing on cost-cost effectiveness and primary energy consumption values for the different scenarios, evaluating them in relation to the minimum requirements set by the regulation. The great potential of photovoltaic energy is highlighted, which allows negative values to be obtained for the two Equivalent Uniform Annual Costs due to the cost avoided through self-consumption. This fact makes the optimal designs tend to electrification, specifically through air and ground source heat pumps. It is worth mentioning that the new Code has only established a minimum target for renewable self-consumption in the residential sector, which should be reinforced in future updates.

Aquifer conditions, not irradiance determine the potential of photovoltaic energy for groundwater pumping across Africa

Groundwater pumping using photovoltaic energy has the potential to transform water services in poorly served areas. Here we develop a numerical model that uses openly available data to simulate the abstraction capacities of photovoltaic water pumping systems across Africa. The first contribution of this article is the detailed design of the large-scale model to include realistic geological constraints on the depth of pumping and sub-hourly irradiance time series. The second one is the provision of results for the whole continent. We simulated results for three system sizes (100, 1000, 3000 Wp) and the daily pumped volumes were found to vary between 0.1 and 180 m3, depending on the size and location. We show that, for much of Africa, groundwater pumping using photovoltaic energy is constrained by aquifer conditions, rather than irradiance. Our results can help identify regions where photovoltaic pumping has the highest potential and help target large scale investments.

Remote sensing of photovoltaic scenarios: Techniques, applications and future directions

Developing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems is an effective way to address the problems of limited fossil fuel reserves, soaring world energy demand and global climate change. The earth observation information provides a promising perspective for estimating the PV energy potential and understanding the status of the PV system development, which is critical for making scientifically sound and cost-optimal sustainable planning strategies. Remote sensing (RS), a versatile technology that captures surface information at various temporal and spatial scales, is now widely applied in different fields of the PV development. However, despite the rapid growth of related research, there is still a lack of comprehensive review on the application of RS to different stages (i.e., planning, site selection, installation, maintenance, etc.) of the PV system development. This paper systematically reviews the research progress of RS technology applied throughout various stages of the PV system development. The reviewed literatures are organized as four major parts: i) PV potential estimation, ii) PV array detection, iii) PV fault monitoring and diagnosis, and iv) other cross-cutting areas where RS can facilitate PV development. We conclude that RS technology can bridge the gap caused by the traditional methods in effective assessment of resource potential, large-scale data analysis and PV health monitoring, which can provide strong support in assisting the planning, management, and decision-making of PV systems. Finally, we discuss future challenges and opportunities for RS technology in PV applications for advancing the research in this area.

Projected patterns of climate change impact on photovoltaic energy potential: A case study of Iraq

Ambitious plans for the decarbonization of the global energy system necessitate the scaling up of renewable energy exploitation. This could render the energy supply system more susceptible to the effects of climate change as most renewables are climate-dependent by nature. Therefore, understanding the consequences of climate change on renewable energy systems at a regional level plays an important role in the financial management, process optimization, and energy yield assessment of these systems. In this work, the key objective is to examine the projected impacts of surface insolation and temperature fluctuations on the future photovoltaic (PV) energy potentials in Iraq. Projections are quantified across two climate scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, which represent the intermediate and worst-case scenarios in which insolation will rise by 4.5 and 8.5 W/m2 by the beginning of the next century. The results show that the average temperature across the country is anticipated to rise by 1.5 °C and 2.4 °C under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively. The results also show that the change in solar PV potential relative to current climatic conditions, would be −0.3 to 8.1% under RCP4.5 while it is −5.1 to 6.3% under RCP8.5 by the beginning of the next century. The highest potentials are predicted in the western parts, and the greatest drops are in the southeastern parts. Temporal stability of PV potentials also appears to be little affected by future climatic scenarios, with some southern parts even indicating a little positive rise. So, even though climate change is expected to cause small drops in PV output in some areas, it is unlikely to pose a danger under RCP4.5 to PV productivity in Iraq.

Modeling, Energy Performance and Economic Analysis of Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic System for Net Energy Metering Scheme in Malaysia

Energy is one of the essential inputs for modernization and social development. Energy demand is increasing, and the primary energy source is fossil fuels, which negatively impact the environment. Energy saving and renewables are the potential solutions which could minimize environmental impact. This paper investigates the energy-saving and solar photovoltaic energy potential of an educational institution, Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS), Malaysia. The feasibility analysis was conducted by assuming that PSAS joined the Net Energy Metering (NEM 3.0) program, where PSAS, as a NEM consumer, has a tripartite supply agreement with renewable energy (SARE) with a distribution licensee known as Tenaga National Berhad (TNB). This paper focuses on zero capital expenditure (CAPEX) saving through a 20-year contract. This paper proposes a rooftop solar photovoltaic diagram using a NEM meter installed in the ring distribution system at PSAS. The estimated savings to be obtained by PSAS in the 20 years that the contract is in force are calculated based on the assumption that the installed solar system has a capacity of 688 kW. The maximum value of power generated by the system for a year is 990,720 kWh. The feasibility analysis found that the cumulative net savings estimate for PSAS based on the overall calculation for 21 years of solar use is RM 3,534,250. Meanwhile, the cumulative assessment of carbon emission reduction obtained in the same period is 14,559,760 kg CO2 or 14,559.76 tons of CO2, which would save 363,994 mature trees from being cut down.

The evolution potential of photovoltaic energy: A comparative study between Brazil and Germany

AbstractDue to the growing demand on energy consumption, policy makers were pressured to create new strategies to improve the energy distribution system. The search for sustainable practices is a global necessity and photovoltaic energy is an option in this transition. The trend is for more advanced countries, such as Germany, to inspire others that are developing. This study aimed to compare the development of photovoltaic solar energy between Brazil and Germany. For that, a literature review was carried out followed by documental research. The results demonstrate that the regulation of photovoltaic energy in Brazil is recent, presenting barriers such as the lack of financial incentives, the lack of interest from the public perhaps due to the high costs, in addition to the difficulties in its generation and distribution. However, a long‐term positive change is envisioned. In Germany, the photovoltaic system is well developed, economically viable, has strong political and public support to achieve the goal established in the search for sustainability.

Quantification of the Impact of Fine Particulate Matter on Solar Energy Resources and Energy Performance of Different Photovoltaic Technologies.

Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) could be a potential environmental risk for decreasing the available solar energy resources and solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation. This study quantifies the attenuation effects of PM2.5 on surface solar irradiance and system performance of different solar PV technologies in Hong Kong. The analysis based on observational irradiation data shows that the global horizontal irradiance decreased by more than 5% in most months under the conditions of PM2.5 concentration exceeding 33.5 μg/m3. During the experiment, the average PM2.5-related losses in the energy output of crystalline silicon and thin-film PV systems could be up to 7.00 and 9.73%, respectively. The measured energy outputs of the experimental PV modules suggest that PM2.5 affects the energy performance of thin-film solar cells with a larger band gap more significantly than that of crystalline silicon PV modules. Moreover, an increasing trend in the performance ratio of monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and copper indium gallium selenide PV systems with the increase of PM2.5 concentration is observed. In contrast, the amorphous silicon and cadmium telluride PV systems with a narrower spectral response range show a decreasing trend in the performance ratio over the experiment. Results indicate that the losses in the available solar energy resources and PV energy potential are expected to increase in areas where heavier PM2.5 pollution exists.

ESTIMATION OF PHOTOVOLTAIC POTENTIAL AT THE URBAN LEVEL FROM 3D CITY MODEL (SOLAR CADASTER): CASE OF CASABLANCA CITY, MOROCCO

Abstract. Nowadays, the use of solar energy in buildings, especially photovoltaic energy, has undergone a great evolution in the world, thanks to various technological advances and to incentive programs. Related to this topic, the solar cadaster is an important interactive tool to predict the solar potential in an urban environment. The main objective of this research work is to estimate the photovoltaic energy potential of roofs based on aerial photogrammetry and GIS processing. The location chosen for the study is the Maarif district located in the city of Casablanca in order to raise awareness of the public and decision makers to this energy potential through a geoportal that will be developed for this purpose. The tool proposed in this research work makes it possible to evaluate the solar irradiation on a part of the territory of Casablanca with a sufficiently satisfactory precision and reliability, this thanks to the precise reconstruction of the territory in 3D urban model called digital surface model (DSM) at 50 cm resolution by techniques known as photogrammetry which makes it possible to carry out measurements extracted from a stereoscopic pairs, by using the parallax and the correlation between the digital images taken from various points of view. The analysis was used on the basis of specific algorithms and several factors including geographical location, shade, tilt, orientation, roof accessibility and topography which are the main factors influencing the productivity of solar panels.

Generative design: information flow between genetic algorithm and parametric design in a steel structure construction

Abstract This paper describes the construction of an information flow that combines parametric modelling and genetic algorithms to optimise both the total weight of a structured steel roof and the shape of its surface to maximise the generation potential of photovoltaic energy. Through the systematisation of a design process using genetic algorithms integrated with generative design as an architectural design method, architects can work with problem parameterisation, going one step further than the mere formal proposition of solutions.As a result, we present a process in which there is a dialogical relationship between the architect and project in a continuous flow of information in the initial steps of the design process, guided by predefined optimisation objectives. Therefore, it is relevant to note that the designer accepts a reduced creative control over the final shape in favor of control over the core principles that constitute the optimisation algorithms. An approach that involved the designer in a process of post computational processing evaluations is also highlighted, giving him better support to discuss and analyze the design options.

A study of the estimation of the photovoltaic potential at the urban level in tropical complex terrain

This work considers photovoltaic solar energy as an alternative to promote the diversification of the energy matrix and contribute to improving energy access to the citizens of Medellin Metropolitan Area, Colombia, a tropical region that is conditioned by the topography and by the different urban morphology. The objective is to direct policies and strategies for more sustainable and resilient energy use in tropical cities on complex terrain through the production of energy from alternative renewable sources. To achieve this, we assess how much of the energy demand can be generated within the city, integrated into the urban morphology at the roofs of existing buildings including the effect of topography. We use meteorological information and power measurements from three experimental solar panels. We analyze the photovoltaic energy potential in Representative Urban Areas (RUA) and provide information relevant to the whole Valley's context to guide sustainable and resilient energy planning. One particular result is about the energy reduction factor due to cloudiness, which quantifies how energy would vary under the region's cloud conditions.

A Geo-spatial approach for quantifying rooftop photovoltaic energy potential in Karnal smart city, Haryana - A case study

Solar energy is one of the best sustainable forms of renewable energy. India has a cumulative installed capacity of 9.23 GW of grid-connected solar power and set an ambitious target of attaining 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022, including 40 GW of grid-connected rooftop solar installations well. The present study demonstrates the Geospatial technology to estimate the potential of solar photovoltaic on the rooftops of Karnal city. The satellite data of Sentinel -2 and World View-II data was interpreted so as to extract the building footprints. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data derived from ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) PALSAR (2019) data was used to calculate the Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI). It was calculated that the average annual GHI varied between 0.79-5.9 kWh/m2/day. The study revealed maximum GHI (462 kWh/m2) was recorded during the monsoon season. It was estimated that the seasonal energy generation capacity in urban area was minimum (268.4MWh) in the winter season, while the maximum (2632.4MWh) energy generation capacity was observed during the monsoon season. In the case of the industrial area, the minimum seasonal energy generation capacity was found to be 23.9 MWh in winter while the maximum of 234.8 MWh during the monsoon season. If solar panels installed on the proposed rooftops, an estimated energy potential of 5.9 GWh would be generated in the study area.

Impacts of climate change on photovoltaic energy potential: A case study of China

The worldwide pressure of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission mitigation calls for explosive growth in the research and development of renewable energies. At the same time, from a long-term point of view, the renewable energy sector may also be affected by climate change. In this study, the impacts of climate change on photovoltaic (PV) energy potential are evaluated based on the downscaled climate projections in China. The climate projections for the 21st century of China under two Representation Concentration Pathways (RCPs) will be generated through the ERA-Interim reanalysis and three global climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Then the projections of PV-power-related climate variables and PV-energy potential can be obtained for three periods, i.e., the 2030 s (2020–2039), 2050 s (2040–2069), and 2080 s (2070–2099). The results indicate that PV-energy potential is likely to have a slight decrease of up to 6% in most of the study regions under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. Variations in PV-energy potential are further investigated through examining the contributions from changes in temperature, total radiation, and sunshine duration. The results indicate that the dominant contributions are from the changes in total radiation and sunshine duration.

Forecasting of One-Day-Ahead Global Horizontal Irradiation Using Block-Oriented Models Combined with a Swarm Intelligence Approach

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is becoming used gradually as an alternative source to classical fossil fuel because of being renewable, clean and abundant. In agricultural regions such as Hail, Saudi Arabia, farmers can invest in using PV sources for pumping water from relatively deep wells. In such case, forecasting the potential of PV energy is among the primary factors that may affect the design of a PV water pumping system efficiency and reliability. In this paper, a novel combined method based on Hammerstein—autoregressive with exogenous input—Wiener model optimized by particle swarm optimization was developed. Four models including, saturation, dead-zone and polynomial nonlinear blocks have been evaluated using global horizontal irradiation (GHI) as model output and separately, the temperature, the clearness index, the relative humidity and the wind speed as model inputs on daily basis collected from Hail region, Saudi Arabia over 20 years (2000–2019). The collected 7305 observations were divided into a training subset (6205) and a testing subset (1095). Six other models including persistence forecast, smart persistence forecast, time series autoregressive and artificial neural networks have been also implemented on the same dataset for comparison purpose. Based on robust performance indicators (mean absolute percentage error, coefficient of determination, the root mean square error and skill score), the Hammerstein–Saturation with temperature as input model outperformed all the other developed models. To validate the suitability of the proposed approach for forecasting GHI in arid climates, our best model was implemented on two locations picked randomly in the Hail region (Saudi Arabia). The results of validation were in the same scale of accuracy as the primary best model.

Sizing methodology for photovoltaic systems considering coupling of solar energy potential and the electric load: dynamic simulation and financial assessment

A reliable methodology for the dimensioning of photovoltaic systems is presented in this paper. This method generates technical-financial variables that aid in the choice of the most adequate photovoltaic power system for each project. The techniques that are usually used determine the size of PV power plants considering the monthly average of the solar energy potential of the month with the lowest solar radiation and the electricity to be supplied to satisfy the demand. These conventional techniques generate an uncertainty of at least 40 %, mainly due to the daily dispersion of the solar energy availability and of the electric load. The proposed methodology takes into account a region’s own photovoltaic energy potential and the detailed characteristics of the electric load, matching both with different PV power plants sizes, and analyzing the whole during a time period that guarantees the reliability of the results. The energy coupling is performed integrating the energy parameters (solar energy and electric load) in short time intervals (30 minutes maximum) to determine the supplied energy, the unsupplied energy demand and the unused solar energy. The daily integration of the three factors, using a dynamic simulation and performing a financial evaluation, allows for the identification of the most appropriate PV power plant size for every project. The results indicate that this methodology reduces the uncertainty of the solar power-electric load coupling from 40 % to 2.2 %, which allows a better definition of the financial variables that determine the most appropriate installed solar power for a photovoltaic project.

Medición del potencial de explotación de energía fotovoltaica y eólica en Tamaulipas, región Altamira

Now a day, Mexico is looking the way to generate electricity by using renewable, clean and ecofriendly sources according the actual legal framework. This project is a meteorological portable station which will record either direction and speed of wind, light irradiation and environment air temperature in a data logger unit conformed by a microprocessor and a memory. The data recorded in the device will be mathematically analyzed and processed in a delimited period of time and plotted on different type of graphs or documents for to support feasibilities studies which could identify the power potential of photovoltaic energy and wind energy in the city of Altamira Tamaulipas. The main goal of this project is contribute with actual studies which will determine the feasibility of energy generation by using clean energy sources in the south part of our state promoting the development of energy power industry, mainly in the city of Altamira. Objectives: To build a portable meteorological station and to carry out a study of the measurement of the photovoltaic and wind energy exploitation potential in Tamaulipas, Altamira region, based on the data of the environmental variables measured and collected during a certain time, to determine the viability of generation electricity through wind and solar resource in this region. Methodology: In order to carry out the evaluation of the photovoltaic and wind energy potential measurement in Tamaulipas, Altamira region, a customized portable weather station module will be manufactured, to perform measurements of wind speed, wind direction measurements, temperature measurements, and irradiation measurements, at the site of interest. In addition, a system will be installed to register all the variables described in a micro SD memory and a communication system through a bluetooth module. This portable weather station will be installed, at the top of the library building of the Polytechnic University of Altamira. The exact geographical location is shown by means of Google Maps with a Latitude 22.462239 and longitude: -97.970186 (Google, 2018). Contribution: Provide information on the meteorological variables of our environment, adding a solar panel that demonstrates its viability. Implement an interface that allows constant monitoring and the different measurements made at the meteorological station, using sensors and microntrollers.
