Is the time of anthesis in rice (Oryza sativa) influenced by photoperiod?

Photoperiod sensitivity in rice cultivars is defined when the cultivar begins anthesis on a relatively invariant date, varying by < 7days, regardless of the date of sowing or germination. While the date of flowering in photoperiod sensitive (PPS) rice cultivars is characteristically determined by the day length, especially during the short-day season (September-December), the response of the flower opening time (FOT) to photoperiod remains hitherto unexplored. This paper examines whether day length restrains year-to-year variation in FOT in PPS cultivars. We examined 105 PPS and 173 photoperiod insensitive (PPI) cultivars grown in different years and estimated their year-to-year FOT difference (or FOTD) and the year-to-year difference of sunrise to anthesis duration (or SADD). Wilcoxon signed rank test and bootstrap test were then performed to test whether these descriptors significantly differed between PPS and PPI groups of cultivars. The means of FOTD and SADD were detected to be significantly less in the PPS group than in the PPI group of cultivars, indicating significantly lesser variability of FOT in PPS than in PPI cultivars. This is the first report of a strong restraining influence of photoperiod on FOT variability in PPS cultivars.

Cannabis Triploids Exhibit Reduced Fertility and Similar Growth and Flower Production Compared to Diploids

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa) grown for flowers containing cannabinoids requires all female plants, which are susceptible to seed set from exposure to pollen. Created triploids demonstrated reduced seed production compared with diploids in field and greenhouse studies in which plants were challenged with pollen from males. In the field, seed production as a percent of floral biomass ranged from 6.7% to 18.0% for triploids and from 52.6% to 57.1% for diploids. The photoperiod-insensitive triploid genotype ‘Purple Star’ × ‘Wilhelmina’ had 98.5% fewer filled (containing a developed embryo) seeds than the photoperiod-insensitive diploid genotype ‘Tsunami’ × ‘Wilhelmina’. In the greenhouse, triploid ‘Wife’ had 99.5% fewer filled seeds than diploid ‘Wife’. Plant growth and flower production were similar with eight triploid and seven diploid genotypes evaluated over three greenhouse studies. There were a few superior triploid and diploid genotypes; however, their performance was more likely attributable to the parental cultivar combination than ploidy level. The optimal cross direction for producing triploid seed in large quantities is tetraploid × diploid because the diploid × tetraploid cross exhibits triploid block caused by endosperm paternal excess. Colchicine-induced tetraploid parent plants should be tested over a prolonged period to eliminate cryptic chimeral mixoploids or tetraploid plants should be derived from seed produced by crossing two colchicine-induced putative tetraploid plants to ensure that seeds from tetraploid × diploid crosses will be triploid. The latter approach is necessary for photoperiod-insensitive cultivars because a prolonged period of ploidy testing is not possible for these plants. These findings indicate that triploid plants have significantly reduced fertility and are a suitable alternative to diploids in situations in which pollen exposure is possible.

Dissecting the genetic basis of drought responses in common bean using natural variation.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) is the most important legume for human consumption, contributing 30% of the total daily protein intake in developing countries. A major limitation for its cultivation is drought, which causes more than 60% of the annual losses. Among physiological adaptations to drought, delaying senescence and extending the photosynthetic capacity can improve crop productivity. This strategy is known as functional "stay-green" (SG) and has been discussed as a goal in plant breeding to alleviate the loss of yield under water scarcity conditions. The genetic components behind SG traits have been explored specially in cereals, but they are to date poorly studied in the common bean. For this, we screened 71 common bean cultivars belonging to the three most important gene-pools, Mesoamerica, Andes and Europe, selected to cover the natural variation of the species. Phenotyping experiments under terminal drought during long-days in greenhouse conditions, identified six photoperiod insensitive cultivars of European origin with a clear SG phenotype. Using SNP data produced from whole genome re-sequencing data, we obtained 10 variants significantly associated to the SG phenotype on chromosomes 1, 3, 7, 8, 9 and 10 that are in close proximity to gene models with functional annotations related to hormone signaling and anti-oxidant production. Calculating pairwise FST between subgroups of cultivars divided according to their drought response (susceptibility, escape, recovery or SG), we identified up to 29 genomic windows accounting for 1,45Mb that differentiate SG cultivars; these signals were especially strong on chromosomes 1, 5 and 10. Within these windows, we found genes directly involved in photosynthetic processes and trehalose synthesis. Altogether, these signals represent good targets for further characterization and highlight the multigenic nature of the SG response in legumes.

A Farmer’s Approach to Detecting Photoperiod Sensitivity in Rice (Oryza sativa ssp. indica) Landraces

Most indigenous rice landraces are sensitive to photoperiod during short day seasons, and this sensitivity is more pronounced in indica than in japonica landraces. Attempts to identify photoperiod sensitive (PPS) cultivars based on the life history stages of the rice plant, and several models and indices based on phenology and day length have not been precise, and in some cases yield counterfactual inferences. Following the empirical method of traditional Asian rice farmers, the author has developed a robust index, based on the sowing and flowering dates of a large number of landraces grown in different seasons from 2020 to 2023, to contradistinguish PPS from photoperiod insensitive cultivars. Unlike other indices and models of photoperiod sensitivity, the index does not require the presumed duration of different life history stages of the rice plant but relies only on the flowering dates and the number of days till flowering of a rice cultivar sown on different dates to consistently identify photoperiod sensitive cultivars.

Identification and mapping of major-effect flowering time loci Autoflower1 and Early1 in Cannabis sativa L.

Flowering time is an important trait for all major market classes of hemp (Cannabis sativa), affecting yields and quality of grain, fiber, and cannabinoids. C. sativa is usually considered a short-day plant, flowering once night length reaches a critical threshold. Variations in flowering time within and across cultivars in outdoor grown populations have been previously identified, likely corresponding to genetic differences in this critical night length. Further, some C. sativa are photoperiod insensitive, colloquially referred to as “autoflowering.” This trait has anecdotally been described as a simple recessive trait with major impacts on phenology and yield. In this work, the locus responsible for the “autoflower” trait (Autoflower1), as well as a major-effect flowering time locus, Early1, were mapped using bulked segregant analysis. Breeder-friendly high-throughput molecular marker assays were subsequently developed for both loci. Also detailed are the flowering responses of diverse cultivars grown in continuous light and the result of crossing two photoperiod insensitive cultivars of differing pedigree.

Photoperiod Insensitivity in Pigeonpea Introgression Lines Derived from Wild Cajanus Species

Pigeonpea is a photoperiod-sensitive crop; therefore, the introgression of photoperiod insensitivity could increase its adaptability to new environments. We determined the effect of extended daylength (ED; 16 h light) on the phenotypical traits of extra-early, early, and mid-early maturing pigeonpea introgression lines (ILs) derived from wild Cajanus species belonging to secondary and tertiary gene pools. Plants were grown under natural daylength and extended daylength in a greenhouse. Comparisons of the time of floral bud initiation, days to flowering, plant height, number of branches, and number of leaf nodes on the main stem at flowering revealed photoperiod-insensitive lines. All traits varied widely among the ILs. Analyses of flowering traits revealed large genetic components with low genotype × treatment interactions and high broad-sense heritability. The photoperiod most strongly affected the number of primary branches, followed by plant height. The extended day advanced flowering by approximately four days in extra-early ILs, confirming that these ILs are quantitative, short-day plants. The photoperiod insensitivity index varied from 0.88 in ICPP 171541 (moderately photoperiod sensitive) to 0.99 in ICPP 171546 and ICPP 171561 (photoperiod insensitive). These photoperiod-insensitive extra-early flowering ILs can be used to enrich the genetic diversity of pigeonpea and to develop photoperiod-insensitive cultivars for cultivation in new environments.

Loss of Function of the E1-Like-b Gene Associates With Early Flowering Under Long-Day Conditions in Soybean.

Photoperiod response of flowering determines plant adaptation to different latitudes. Soybean, a short-day plant, has gained the ability to flower under long-day conditions during the growing season at higher latitudes, mainly through dysfunction of phytochrome A genes (E3 and E4) and the floral repressor E1. In this study, we identified a novel molecular genetic basis of photoperiod insensitivity in Far-Eastern Russian soybean cultivars. By testcrossing these cultivars with a Canadian cultivar Harosoy near-isogenic line for a recessive e3 allele, followed by association tests and fine mapping, we determined that the insensitivity was inherited as a single recessive gene located in an 842-kb interval in the pericentromeric region of chromosome 4, where E1-Like b (E1Lb), a homoeolog of E1, is located. Sequencing analysis detected a single-nucleotide deletion in the coding sequence of the gene in insensitive cultivars, which generated a premature stop codon. Near-isogenic lines (NILs) for the loss-of-function allele (designated e1lb) exhibited upregulated expression of soybean FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) orthologs, FT2a and FT5a, and flowered earlier than those for E1Lb under long-day conditions in both the e3/E4 and E3/E4 genetic backgrounds. These NILs further lacked the inhibitory effect on flowering by far-red light–enriched long-day conditions, which is mediated by E4, but not that of red-light–enriched long-day conditions, which is mediated by E3. These findings suggest that E1Lb retards flowering under long-day conditions by repressing the expression of FT2a and FT5a independently of E1. This loss-of-function allele can be used as a new resource in breeding of photoperiod-insensitive cultivars, and may improve our understanding of the function of the E1 family genes in the photoperiod responses of flowering in soybean.

A recessive allele for delayed flowering at the soybean maturity locus E9 is a leaky allele of FT2a, a FLOWERING LOCUS T ortholog.

BackgroundUnderstanding the molecular mechanisms of flowering and maturity is important for improving the adaptability and yield of seed crops in different environments. In soybean, a facultative short-day plant, genetic variation at four maturity genes, E1 to E4, plays an important role in adaptation to environments with different photoperiods. However, the molecular basis of natural variation in time to flowering and maturity is poorly understood. Using a cross between early-maturing soybean cultivars, we performed a genetic and molecular study of flowering genes. The progeny of this cross segregated for two maturity loci, E1 and E9. The latter locus was subjected to detailed molecular analysis to identify the responsible gene.ResultsFine mapping, sequencing, and expression analysis revealed that E9 is FT2a, an ortholog of Arabidopsis FLOWERING LOCUS T. Regardless of daylength conditions, the e9 allele was transcribed at a very low level in comparison with the E9 allele and delayed flowering. Despite identical coding sequences, a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms and insertions/deletions were detected in the promoter, untranslated regions, and introns between the two cultivars. Furthermore, the e9 allele had a Ty1/copia–like retrotransposon, SORE-1, inserted in the first intron. Comparison of the expression levels of different alleles among near-isogenic lines and photoperiod-insensitive cultivars indicated that the SORE-1 insertion attenuated FT2a expression by its allele-specific transcriptional repression. SORE-1 was highly methylated, and did not appear to disrupt FT2a RNA processing.ConclusionsThe soybean maturity gene E9 is FT2a, and its recessive allele delays flowering because of lower transcript abundance that is caused by allele-specific transcriptional repression due to the insertion of SORE-1. The FT2a transcript abundance is thus directly associated with the variation in flowering time in soybean. The e9 allele may maintain vegetative growth in early-flowering genetic backgrounds, and also be useful as a long-juvenile allele, which causes late flowering under short-daylength conditions, in low-latitude regions.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12870-016-0704-9) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Growing rice in controlled environments

Rice (Oryza sativa) is less frequently used in basic research than Arabidopsis, although rice is a valuable model system for many monocot crops and possesses a high genetic variability in physiologically as well as agriculturally relevant features such as abiotic stress tolerance, nutrient efficiency and flower time control. A reason is the seemingly difficult cultivation of rice outside the rice production area. This review aims to assist newcomers to the field to develop cultivation protocols for their local controlled environment. The main challenges are high light demands, photoperiodicity and low micronutrient efficiency. The nutrient efficiency problem can be overcome by adding micronutrient fertiliser to potting substrates and keeping the soil waterlogged to increase micronutrient availability and mobility. Cultivation of rice on adjusted hydroponic solutions with high iron concentration provides the basis for successful heavy isotope labelling. Many rice cultivars need high light intensities in combination with short-day conditions to complete their life cycle. However, some photoperiod-insensitive cultivars will flower even under relatively low light intensities. In highly photoperiod-sensitive cultivars, like Nipponbare, flowering can be induced by a limited period of short-day treatment in the sensitive period, after which the cultivation can be continued in long-day conditions. The life cycle of many cultivars is completed in 90 to 120 days, its length being thus comparable to Arabidopsis and shorter than in other cereals. In conclusion, with the right cultivation technique, rice is an amiable model species for researchers beyond the rice area too.

Genetic variation in four maturity genes affects photoperiod insensitivity and PHYA-regulated post-flowering responses of soybean

BackgroundAbsence of or low sensitivity to photoperiod is necessary for short-day crops, such as rice and soybean, to adapt to high latitudes. Photoperiod insensitivity in soybeans is controlled by two genetic systems and involves three important maturity genes: E1, a repressor for two soybean orthologs of Arabidopsis FLOWERING LOCUS T (GmFT2a and GmFT5a), and E3 and E4, which are phytochrome A genes. To elucidate the diverse mechanisms underlying photoperiod insensitivity in soybean, we assessed the genotypes of four maturity genes (E1 through E4) in early-flowering photoperiod-insensitive cultivars and their association with post-flowering responses.ResultsWe found two novel dysfunctional alleles in accessions originally considered to have a dominant E3 allele according to known DNA markers. The E3 locus, together with E1 and E4, contained multiple dysfunctional alleles. We identified 15 multi-locus genotypes, which we subdivided into 6 genotypic groups by classifying their alleles by function. Of these, the e1-as/e3/E4 genotypic group required an additional novel gene (different from E1, E3, and E4) to condition photoperiod insensitivity. Despite their common pre-flowering photoperiod insensitivity, accessions with different multi-locus genotypes responded differently to the post-flowering photoperiod. Cultivars carrying E3 or E4 were sensitive to photoperiod for post-flowering characteristics, such as reproductive period and stem growth after flowering. The phytochrome A–regulated expression of the determinate growth habit gene Dt1, an ortholog of Arabidopsis TERMINAL FLOWER1, was involved in the persistence of the vegetative activity at the stem apical meristem of flower-induced plants under long-day conditions.ConclusionsDiverse genetic mechanisms underlie photoperiod insensitivity in soybean. At least three multi-locus genotypes consisting of various allelic combinations at E1, E3, and E4 conferred pre-flowering photoperiod insensitivity to soybean cultivars but led to different responses to photoperiod during post-flowering vegetative and reproductive development. The phyA genes E3 and E4 are major controllers underlying not only pre-flowering but also post-flowering photoperiod responses. The current findings improve our understanding of genetic diversity in pre-flowering photoperiod insensitivity and mechanisms of post-flowering photoperiod responses in soybean.

Frequency of occurrence of various drought types and its impact on performance of photoperiod-sensitive and insensitive rice genotypes in rainfed lowland conditions in Cambodia

Lowland rice production in the Mekong region is generally low because crops are cultivated under rainfed conditions and often exposed to drought. To examine how field water availability affects productivity of different genotypes in rainfed lowland rice, the field experiments were carried out for six years at eight locations in Cambodia. We classified 34 genotypes used in the experiments into photoperiod-insensitive [short (IS) and medium (IM) maturity] and sensitive [medium (SM) and long-duration (SL) maturity] genotype groups. Mean days-to-flower from sowing was 87 in IS, 112 in IM, 112 in SM and 132 in SL and mean grain yield was 2.0, 2.8, 2.5 and 2.4 t ha −1, respectively. Drought environment was quantified for each experiment by determining whether free water level was observed to be less than the soil surface during three growth stages: GS1 (maximum tillering), GS2 (panicle development) and GS3 (grain filling). The drought frequency estimated from 44 field experiments was 18% in all IM, SM and SL at GS1, 23%, 25% and 32% in IM, SM and SL, respectively at GS2, and 43%, 45% and 57% at GS3. Thus, the drought occurred more frequently after flowering, particularly in the SL group. Based on the results, the IM genotypes may be grown to escape from drought during the GS2 and GS3 periods by sowing early (June) in the drought environment. When sown late (August), the SM genotypes are exposed to less drought risk because they flower earlier than the IM genotypes. Compared with the SM genotypes, the SL genotypes are highly exposed to water stress during the GS3 period, resulting in yield reduction. SM and IM had similar occurrence of drought environment, but yield reduction due to drought was less in SM than in IM. Thus, photoperiod-sensitive cultivars with medium maturity are preferred in drought-prone lowland fields, particularly when sowing is delayed. In the favourable water environment, the SM genotypes can be better than the IM genotypes when sown early in the season, while the IM genotypes performs better than the SM genotypes with late sowing. This suggests that for lowland fields without drought photoperiod-insensitive cultivars are recommended and photoperiod-sensitive cultivars can be preferred if sown early.

Yield and water productivity of rice as affected by time of transplanting in Punjab, India

Early planting of rice crop during the period of peak evaporative demand results in substantial mining of ground water and threats the sustainability of rice production in Punjab, northwest India. In order to increase yield and water productivity, arrest the mining of ground water, and achieve sustainability of rice production, there is need to adopt water-saving management practices. The present investigation in the Indian Punjab was aimed at investigating the effect of date of transplanting in four rice cultivars varying in growth duration (short-duration RH-257 and PR-115, and medium-duration PR-113 and PAU-201) on yield and water productivity. Delaying in transplanting from 15 June to 25 June or 5 July resulted in reduction in mean grain yield of the four cultivars by 7.2% and 15.9%, respectively. PAU-201, a photoperiod-sensitive cultivar, had higher mean grain yield (7.8 t ha −1) by 14.1%, 12.8% and 11.5% over the photoperiod-insensitive cultivars, PR-113, PR-115 and RH-257, respectively. Irrespective of transplanting dates, short-duration cultivars, RH-257 and PR-115, respectively, resulted in 18.9% and 16.6% saving of water, as compared to medium-duration cultivar PR-113. With delayed transplanting after 15 June, both yield and water productivity decreased for all photoperiod insensitive cultivars, but yields remained statistically similar and water productivity greater for a photoperiod sensitive cultivar. Mean irrigation water productivity (WP I) was highest for 15 June transplanting (0.66 kg m −3) and lowest for 5 July transplanting (0.57 kg m −3), and was highest for RH-257 (0.68 kg m −3) and lowest for PR-113 (0.50 kg m −3). Total water productivity (WP I+R; irrigation plus rainfall) decreased by 9.1% for 5 July transplanting compared with 15 June transplanting, and was highest for RH-257 (0.49 kg m −3) and lowest for PR-113 (0.38 kg m −3). Real crop water productivity (WP ET) of the photoperiod insensitive cultivars decreased (1.10–1.40 kg m −3), but that of a photoperiod sensitive cultivar increased (1.63 kg m −3), with delayed transplanting. We conclude that substantial amount of water can be saved and yield increased by transplanting short-duration cultivars during the period of peak evaporative demand, or water saved and yield maintained by transplanting a photoperiod-sensitive cultivar late in the season when the evaporative demand is low.

Minimising cold damage during reproductive development among temperate rice genotypes. I. Avoiding low temperature with the use of appropriate sowing time and photoperiod-sensitive varieties

Multiple-sown field trials in 4 consecutive years in the Riverina region of south-eastern Australia provided 24 different combinations of temperature and day length, which enabled the development of crop phenology models. A crop model was developed for 7 cultivars from diverse origins to identify if photoperiod sensitivity is involved in determining phenological development, and if that is advantageous in avoiding low-temperature damage. Cultivars that were mildly photoperiod-sensitive were identified from sowing to flowering and from panicle initiation to flowering. The crop models were run for 47 years of temperature data to quantify the risk of encountering low temperature during the critical young microspore stage for 5 different sowing dates. Cultivars that were mildly photoperiod-sensitive, such as Amaroo, had a reduced likelihood of encountering low temperature for a wider range of sowing dates compared with photoperiod-insensitive cultivars. The benefits of increased photoperiod sensitivity include greater sowing flexibility and reduced water use as growth duration is shortened when sowing is delayed. Determining the optimal sowing date also requires other considerations, e.g. the risk of cold damage at other sensitive stages such as flowering and the response of yield to a delay in flowering under non-limiting conditions. It was concluded that appropriate sowing time and the use of photoperiod-sensitive cultivars can be advantageous in the Riverina region in avoiding low temperature damage during reproductive development.

Rice crop duration and leaf appearance rate in a variable thermal environment. II. Comparison of genotypes

Rice crop duration in tropical-arid, irrigated environments, such as the Sahel, varies strongly among seasons and years. For rice double-cropping systems, cultivars are needed that have a stable duration under variable daylengths and temperatures. No efficient selection tools are currently available to screen for comparatively thermo- and photoperiod-insensitive cultivars, and little is known about the genetic diversity of rice in this respect. A previous study presented a model that disaggregates photothermal effects on rice phenology for the different crop development stages and the two main factors, daylength and temperature. The present study characterizes differences in the photothermal response of 18 rice lines for three major phases of their development, namely, germination, the appearance of early leaves, and the induction phase (IP) between the end of the basic vegetative phase (BVP) and panicle initiation (PI). A field experiment was conducted at Ndiaye in Senegal, using 11 staggered sowing dates at 15 day intervals. Three check cultivars were replicated four times per date, and the others were not replicated. Phenological observations included leaf tip appearance rates on a daily basis, and heading and flowering dates. Water and air temperatures were also monitored. The duration from seed soaking to the appearance of the first leaf depended linearly on water temperature, with a base temperature of about 8°C. No differences were observed among lines. The appearance rate of the first to the fourth leaf had an optimum temperature ( T opt) between 22°C and 25°C, with significant differences between lines. Lines with low T opt had high maximal leaf appearance rates during seedling stage. The quantitatively most important component of the seasonal variability of crop duration was IP, which depended on temperature and photoperiod. Photoperiodic and temperature effects were disaggregated using an empirically based model leaf appearance (LAP), which, by way of parametrization, helped quantify genotypic differences. The photothermal differences between lines were associated with adaptation to specific seasons. Lines such as IR13240-108-2-2-3, which is adapted to several seasons, were comparatively insensitive to photoperiod and temperature. That line also had a low T opt and a high Leaf Appearance. In conclusion, screening for temperature-insensitive leaf appearance rates may be promising for rice breeding for arid, irrigated environments. Selection for combined low thermal and photoperiod sensitivity, however, would be impractical on an experimental basis, and would therefore require genetic markers.

Growth response of four hard red spring wheat cultivars to date of seeding

An increasing number of spring wheat cultivars released for production in western Canada are daylength insensitive. In contrast, until a decade ago virtually all Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat cultivars were daylength sensitive. The impact of photoperiod response on CWRS wheat growth and yield has not been studied to date. A growth analysis study was conducted in each of 3 yr at Saskatoon. Growth and yield traits of the photoperiod-sensitive cultivars Conway and Katepwa and photoperiod-insensitive cultivars Laura and Leader were compared in early versus late plantings. Laura had the highest leaf area index at anthesis and produced more spikelets and kernels per spike than the other cultivars. Laura, however, had a higher tiller mortality, producing fewer spikes per square metre. The cultivars did not respond uniformly to delayed seeding from one year to the next. Significant crossover cultivar × seeding date interaction was detected in each of the 3 yr. The cultivar × seeding-date interactions did not appear to follow a pattern that might be ascribed to differing cultivar photoperiod sensitivity. Conway was involved in one case of significant (P = 0.10) cultivar × seeding cross-over interaction for grain yield, while Katepwa and Leader were each involved in two cases and Laura in three cases. This study failed to determine whether differing photoperiod responses would translate into gross differences in cultivar growth and yield. Thus, there is a need to develop near-isogenic lines to determine whether photoperiod insensitivity is detrimental to yield stability in CWRS wheats. Inheritance of Photoperiod Response in Andean and Mesoamerican Common Bean

In the tropics, the majority of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) landraces are photoperiod sensitive to long daylengths, yet, within certain bean gene pools, significant numbers of photoperiod insensitive cultivars are present. The effect of photoperiod response on common bean adaptation and yield potential in the tropics is not known, nor is the inheritance of photoperiod response well understood. In this study, the inheritance of photoperiod response in common beans was investigated in two environments differing in mean temperature. Five common bean lines from each of two gene pools—Mesoamerican and Andean—were crossed in all combinations within each group. Under 12.3‐h natural and 18‐h artificially extended daylength treatments in field studies at Palmira and Popayan, parental lines, F1 and F2 generations, and random F3 lines (Palmira) were evaluated for days flower (DTF). In a second study, allelism tests were done to determine whether the genes controlling photoperiod‐induced delay of flowering were the same in the Mesoamerican and Andean gent pools. The parental lines in all evaluations showed three distinct responses to long daylengths: day‐neutral, intermediate, and sensitive. At Palmira, under warmer temperatures, photoperiod response was maximized with DTF ranging from 30 to 100 d. At Popayan, under cooler temperatures, photoperiod response was reduced and DTF ranged from 37 to 74 d. Neutral lines flowered about 5 d later at Popayan than at Palmira, while sensitive lines flowered about 12 d earlier. Under both environments, photoperiod sensitivity was inherited as two dominant genes (AABB), while the neutral response was conditioned by recessive epistasis (aabb or aaBB). An intermediate response occurs when the first gene is dominant, but the second gene is recessive (AAbb). All insensitive lines used in these studies were aabb, but the possible existence of insensitive aaBB genotypes is addressed. Crosses between Mesoamerican × Andean genotypes showed that the genes controlling photoperiod response in the two gene pools are the same.
