Special Issue on ACP 2021

We are pleased to publish a Special Issue of the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL) by selecting papers that were presented at the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP) 2021 during October 24-27, 2021. The invited papers, best student papers, best innovation papers, best poster papers, and post-deadline papers of ACP 2021 were invited to submit the extended version to this Special Issue. The articles collected in this Special Issue provide additional technical results and further discussions and insights. All manuscripts submitted to this issue went through the standard review process according to the PTL review guidelines.

Editorial

I was appointed the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL) in late 2017. In the past few years, with the efforts from the editors and staff, and with the support from our authors and reviewers, PTL was able to maintain its high standard in publishing high-quality and high-impact research results in photonics technology.

I am thankful to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Photonics Society for the vote of confidence in appointing me to Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL). I am very proud and excited to be appointed to this role. I would like to recognize Dr. Jianping Yao, my predecessor, for his unprecedented contribution to PTL during his tenure as Editor-in-Chief. With the continued support from the authors, reviewers, staff, and editors, I endeavor to get close to the very high standard that Dr. Yao and the PTL Editorial Board set for the journal.

Editorial: Special Issue on ACP/IPOC 2020

We are pleased to provide readers with the newest and important technologies presented in Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP) and International Conference on Information Photonics and Optical Communications (IPOC) 2020 (ACP/IPOC 2020), through this Special Issue published by the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL) journal. Technologies of photonics and optical communications (POCs) have developed rapidly in the last decades and have evolved to become a key-enabling component for the applications of high-speed telecommunications, advanced microwave signal generation and processing, astronomy observations, and even for quantum information processing and computing. The field of POC continues attracting a great deal of attention and keeps progressing in several important directions. Based on the nowadays matured exploration methods, current research is mainly directed towards implementations in integrated formats, such as high-speed optical transmission, big-capacity optical switching, automated optical-network/system evolution, and so on. In addition, intensive research is being conducted toward the utilization of POC across the abovementioned practical application areas and others.

Editorial

We are pleased to serve as the Guest Editors of this Special Issue on the topic of Optical Frequency Combs, published by the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL) journal. The science and technology of optical frequency combs (OFCs) have developed dramatically in the last few decades, and frequency combs have evolved to become a key enabling tool for a myriad of pertinent applications, from ultrahigh-precision metrology and spectroscopy to novel, exciting uses in high-speed telecommunications, advanced microwave signal generation and processing, astronomy observations, and even for quantum information processing and computing. The field of OFCs continues attracting a great deal of attention and keeps progressing in several important directions. OFC technologies based upon mode-locked lasers are very mature, so current research is mainly directed towards implementations in integrated formats, such as frequency combs generated in micro-resonator devices, or in alternative designs with enhanced capabilities, such as platforms based upon electro-optic modulation or frequency-shifted laser cavities. Intensive research is being also conducted toward the utilization of OFCs across the above-mentioned practical application areas and others.

It is a great honor and privilege for me to be appointed Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL). I am grateful to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Photonics Society for the confidence and trust in me, to provide me with this opportunity to serve the members of the Society and the greater photonics community.

Editorial Special Issue on Optical MEMS and Nanophotonics

The aim of PHOTONICS TECHNOLOGY LETTERS (PTL) is ultimately to serve the photonics community. As such, it is with great delight I would like to introduce the second Special Issue of PTL, in which we address the area of optical MEMS and nanophotonics, in response to a demand from the community. As with the inaugural Special Issue which appeared in November 2012, this Special Issue has been linked to an IEEE Photonics Society conference, this time the International Conference on Optical MEMS and Nanophotonics. The timescales for this Special Issue have been demanding and with this in mind, I would like to thank those who made rapid publication possible, namely the guest editors, authors, and anonymous reviewers for ensuring prompt reviewing, and Sylvia Flores and Eileen McGuinness for ensuring prompt production of the final manuscripts. I hope you will find this Special Issue of interest and hence, without further ado, I would like to hand over to the guest editors for the Special Issue on Optical MEMS and Nanophotonics and thank you for your continued readership.

Editorial

As I approach the end of my first three-year term as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE PHOTONICS TECHNOLOGY LETTERS (PTL), a degree of reflection is inevitable. PTL is in good shape, measured not just in the steadily improving bibliometrics but also in the steady growth in submissions. Coupled with the page limit increasing from 3 to 4 pages, the number of pages printed per annum has increased from less than 2000 in excess of 2500 over the last three years.

Editorial: Increasing the Page Limit to Permit Four-Page Letters

In a previous Editorial, the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) alluded to changes to IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL) which would be introduced to better serve the photonics community [ibid., vol. 24, no. 5, p. 331, Mar. 1, 2012]. Now that the revised review process is starting to have the desired effect, he is pleased to announce the next development, namely that PTL will increase the page limit for manuscripts from three to four pages. This matter was first discussed at last year's meeting of the PTL Editors held during OFC 2011, which was moved to implementation at this year's meeting held in March. IEEE policy and PTL policy are outlined.

Editorial [EIC E.-H. Lee steps down

The author would like to announce that his three-year term as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (PTL) has ended. The new PTL Editor-in-Chief is Dr. Seb Savory of the University College London, U.K. Seb Savory has been an excellent Associate Editor of PTL for many years and PTL is lucky to have him as the new Editor-in- Chief. Seb is an active and outstanding person in the field and has an enthusiastic passion for PTL. I wish continued success and prosperity for PTL in his good hands.
