Laterally coupled photonic crystal surface emitting laser arrays

We propose and investigate a novel coherent laser array design based on laterally coupled photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs). As a new type of semiconductor laser technology, PCSELs have field confinement in a planar cavity and laser beam emission in the surface normal direction. By engineering lateral couplings between PCSELs with heterostructure photonic crystal designs, we can achieve coherent operations from an array of PCSELs. In this paper, we demonstrate coherent operation from a passively coupled PCSEL array design. We fabricated PCSEL array devices on a GaAs-based quantum well heterostructure at a target wavelength of 1040 nm. Experimental results show that the 2-by-2 PCSEL arrays have spectral linewidth of 0.14–0.22 nm. Beam combining performance was characterized by self-interference experiments. Similar coherency between the PCSEL array and single PCSEL device was observed. Our compact PCSEL array designs by passive lateral coupling have potential applications in fields of on-chip photonic computing, quantum, and information processing.

Hybrid parallel photonic reservoir computing with accelerated data processing speed

Reservoir computing is a bio-inspired approach especially suited for processing time-dependent information. In this work, we propose a hybrid reservoir computing scheme based on parallel photonic time-delay reservoirs with optical injection. The state of virtual nodes are evaluated from the combination of temporal outputs of parallel lasers. It is demonstrated that our proposed hybrid scheme enables photonic reservoir computer with shortened time interval θ and less virtual nodes number N, which could break through the limitation of short external cavity length in miniaturization of reservoir computing with photonic integrated circuits. The computational efficiency of photonic reservoir is numerically evaluated by chaotic time-series prediction task and memory capacity test. State-of-the-art speed performances reach 20 GSa/s with prediction error rate below 0.01. Our scheme bridges the areas of photonic integrated circuits and photonic information processing.

Silicon-Lattice-Matched Boron-Doped Gallium Phosphide: A Scalable Acousto-Optic Platform.

The compact size, scalability, and strongly confined fields in integrated photonic devices enable new functionalities in photonic networking and information processing, both classical and quantum. Gallium phosphide (GaP) is a promising material for active integrated photonics due to its high refractive index, wide bandgap, strong nonlinear properties, and large acousto-optic figureof merit. This study demonstrates that silicon-lattice-matched boron-doped GaP (BGaP), grown at the 12-inch wafer scale, provides similar functionalities as GaP. BGaP optical resonators exhibit intrinsic quality factors exceeding 25,000 and 200,000 at visible and telecom wavelengths, respectively. It further demonstrates the electromechanical generation of low-loss acoustic waves and an integrated acousto-optic (AO) modulator. High-resolution spatial and compositional mapping, combined with ab initio calculations, indicate two candidates for the excess optical loss in the visible band: the silicon-GaP interface and boron dimers. These results demonstrate the promise of the BGaP material platform for the development of scalable AO technologies at telecom and provide potential pathways toward higher performance at shorterwavelengths.

All-Optical Switches for Optical Soliton Interactions in a Birefringent Fiber

Interactions among optical solitons can be used to develop photonic information processing devices such as all-optical switches and all-optical logic gates. It is the key to achieve high-speed, high-capacity all-optical networks and optical computers, which is also important in academy. We study the properties of all-optical switches of optical solitons in birefringent fibers, based on the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. It is found that under different initial conditions we can achieve all-optical switching functions. We also study the influence of different physical parameters of birefringent fibers on all-optical soliton switching. The relevant conclusions are conducive to achieving the all-optical switching function of optical solitons in birefringent fibers, providing useful guidance for widespread applications of optical soliton all-optical switches in birefringent fibers of communications.

Generation of DNA oligomers with similar chemical kinetics via in-silico optimization

Networks of interacting DNA oligomers are useful for applications such as biomarker detection, targeted drug delivery, information storage, and photonic information processing. However, differences in the chemical kinetics of hybridization reactions, referred to as kinetic dispersion, can be problematic for some applications. Here, it is found that limiting unnecessary stretches of Watson-Crick base pairing, referred to as unnecessary duplexes, can yield exceptionally low kinetic dispersions. Hybridization kinetics can be affected by unnecessary intra-oligomer duplexes containing only 2 base-pairs, and such duplexes explain up to 94% of previously reported kinetic dispersion. As a general design rule, it is recommended that unnecessary intra-oligomer duplexes larger than 2 base-pairs and unnecessary inter-oligomer duplexes larger than 7 base-pairs be avoided. Unnecessary duplexes typically scale exponentially with network size, and nearly all networks contain unnecessary duplexes substantial enough to affect hybridization kinetics. A new method for generating networks which utilizes in-silico optimization to mitigate unnecessary duplexes is proposed and demonstrated to reduce in-vitro kinetic dispersions as much as 96%. The limitations of the new design rule and generation method are evaluated in-silico by creating new oligomers for several designs, including three previously programmed reactions and one previously engineered structure.

An electroluminescent and tunable cavity-enhanced carbon-nanotube-emitter in the telecom band

Emerging photonic information processing systems require chip-level integration of controllable nanoscale light sources at telecommunication wavelengths. Currently, substantial challenges remain in the dynamic control of the sources, the low-loss integration into a photonic environment, and in the site-selective placement at desired positions on a chip. Here, we overcome these challenges using heterogeneous integration of electroluminescent (EL), semiconducting carbon nanotubes (sCNTs) into hybrid two dimensional – three dimensional (2D-3D) photonic circuits. We demonstrate enhanced spectral line shaping of the EL sCNT emission. By back-gating the sCNT-nanoemitter we achieve full electrical dynamic control of the EL sCNT emission with high on-off ratio and strong enhancement in the telecommunication band. Using nanographene as a low-loss material to electrically contact sCNT emitters directly within a photonic crystal cavity enables highly efficient EL coupling without compromising the optical quality of the cavity. Our versatile approach paves the way for controllable integrated photonic circuits.

Planar Fourier optics for slab waveguides, surface plasmon polaritons, and 2D materials.

Recent experimental work has demonstrated the potential of combining the merits of diffractive and on-chip photonic information processing devices in a single chip by making use of planar (or slab) waveguides. Here, arguments are developed to show that diffraction formulas familiar from 3D Fourier optics can be adapted to 2D under certain mild conditions on the operating speeds of the devices in question. In addition to serving those working in on-chip photonics, this Letter provides analytical tools for the study of surface plasmon polaritons, surface waves, and the optical, acoustic, and crystallographic properties of 2D materials.

GHz Rate Neuromorphic Photonic Spiking Neural Network With a Single Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL)

Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are highly promising devices for the construction of neuromorphic photonic information processing systems, due to their numerous desirable properties such as low power consumption, high modulation speed, and compactness. Of particular interest is the ability of VCSELs to exhibit neuron-like spiking responses at ultrafast sub-nanosecond rates; thus offering great prospects for high-speed light-enabled spike-based processors. Recent works have shown spiking VCSELs are capable of tackling pattern recognition and image processing problems, but additionally, VCSELs have been used as nonlinear elements in photonic reservoir computing (RC) implementations, yielding state of the art operation. This work introduces and experimentally demonstrates for the first time a new GHz-rate photonic spiking neural network (SNN) built with a single VCSEL neuron. The reported system effectively implements a photonic VCSEL-based spiking reservoir computer, and demonstrates its successful application to a complex nonlinear classification task. Importantly, the proposed system benefits from a highly hardware-friendly, inexpensive realization (a single VCSEL device and off-the-shelf fibre-optic components), for high-speed (GHz-rate inputs) and low-power (sub-mW optical input power) photonic operation. These results open new pathways towards future neuromorphic photonic spike-based processing systems based upon VCSELs (or other laser types) for novel ultrafast machine learning and AI hardware.

Observation of phononic skyrmions based on hybrid spin of elastic waves

Skyrmions with topologically stable configuration have shown a promising route toward high-density magnetic and photonic information processing due to their defect-immune and low-driven energy. Here, we experimentally report and observe the existence of phononic skyrmions as new topological structures formed by the three-dimensional hybrid spin of elastic waves. We demonstrate that the frequency-independent spin configuration leads to ultra-broadband feature of phononic skyrmions, which can be produced in any solid structure, including chip-scale ones. We further experimentally show the excellent robustness of the flexibly movable phononic skyrmion lattices against local defects of disorder, sharp corners, and even rectangular holes. Our research opens a vibrant horizon toward an unprecedented way for elastic wave manipulation and structuration by spin configuration and offers a promising lever for alternative phononic technologies, including information processing, biomedical testing, and wave engineering.

Nanowire-based integrated photonics for quantum information and quantum sensing

Abstract At the core of quantum photonic information processing and sensing, two major building pillars are single-photon emitters and single-photon detectors. In this review, we systematically summarize the working theory, material platform, fabrication process, and game-changing applications enabled by state-of-the-art quantum dots in nanowire emitters and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. Such nanowire-based quantum hardware offers promising properties for modern quantum optics experiments. We highlight several burgeoning quantum photonics applications using nanowires and discuss development trends of integrated quantum photonics. Also, we propose quantum information processing and sensing experiments for the quantum optics community, and future interdisciplinary applications.

Multi-Level Encoding and Decoding in a Scalable Photonic Tensor Processor With a Photonic General Matrix Multiply (GeMM) Compiler

The resurgence of artificial intelligence enabled by deep learning and high performance computing has seen a dramatic increase of demand in the accuracy of deep learning model which has come at the cost of computational complexity. The fundamental operations in deep learning models are matrix multiplications, and large scale matrix operations and data-centric tasks have experienced bottlenecks from current digital electronic hardware in terms of performance and scalability. Recent research on photonic processors have found solutions to enable applications in machine learning, neuromorphic computing and high performance computing using basic photonic processing elements on integrated silicon photonic platform. However, efficient and scalable photonic computing requires an information encoding/decoding scheme. Here, we propose a multi-level encoding and decoding scheme, and experimentally demonstrate it with a wavelength-multiplexed silicon photonic processor. We also discuss the scalability of our proposed scheme by introducing a photonic general matrix multiply compiler, and consider the effects of speed, bit precision, and noise. Our proposed scheme could be adapted to a variety of photonic information processing architectures for photonic neural networks, photonics tensor cores, and programmable photonic.

On-chip scalable highly pure and indistinguishable single-photon sources in ordered arrays: Path to quantum optical circuits.

Realization of quantum optical circuits is at the heart of quantum photonic information processing. A long-standing obstacle, however, has been the absence of a suitable platform of single photon sources (SPSs). Such SPSs need to be in spatially ordered arrays and produce, on-demand, highly pure, and indistinguishable single photons with sufficiently uniform emission characteristics to enable controlled interference between photons from distinct sources underpinning functional quantum optical networks. We report on such a platform of SPSs based on a unique class of epitaxial quantum dots dubbed mesa-top single quantum dot. Under resonant excitation, the spatially ordered SPSs (without Purcell enhancement) show single photon purity of >99% [g(2)(0) ~ 0.015], high two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibilities of 0.82 ± 0.03 (at 11.5 kelvin, without cavity), and spectral nonuniformity of <3 nanometers, within established locally tunable technology. Our platform of SPSs paves the path to creating on-chip scalable quantum photonic networks for communication, computation, simulation, sensing and imaging.

Stacked Reconfigurable Optical Cavities for Smart Sensing Pixels

Photonic systems have seen a recent explosion of investigation for neuromorphic engineering and the execution of machine learning models, owing to the advantages of optics for communications and performing linear operations. Here, we present a novel architecture for executing reconfigurable multiwavelength photonic multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations based on all-solid-state vertically-integrated tunable cavities. We simulate this weighting action through full transfer-matrix calculations of a realistic candidate filter stack. By efficiently leveraging the out-of-plane dimension, we form a conceptual ‘smart pixel’ device that can achieve higher spectral channel count per area, or equivalently computational density, than comparable subpixel architectures and planar integrated photonic devices. While this technology is of use for neuromorphic photonic information processing, its usefulness extends to applications in sensing and communications by covering, for instance, high spatial resolution hyperspectral filters and reconfigurable routing.

Spatiotemporal Fourier transform with femtosecond pulses for on-chip devices

On-chip manipulation of the spatiotemporal characteristics of optical signals is important in the transmission and processing of information. However, the simultaneous modulation of on-chip optical pulses, both spatially at the nano-scale and temporally over ultra-fast intervals, is challenging. Here, we propose a spatiotemporal Fourier transform method for on-chip control of the propagation of femtosecond optical pulses and verify this method employing surface plasmon polariton (SPP) pulses on metal surface. An analytical model is built for the method and proved by numerical simulations. By varying space- and frequency-dependent parameters, we demonstrate that the traditional SPP focal spot may be bent into a ring shape, and that the direction of propagation of a curved SPP-Airy beam may be reversed at certain moments to create an S-shaped path. Compared with conventional spatial modulation of SPPs, this method offers potentially a variety of extraordinary effects in SPP modulation especially associated with the temporal domain, thereby providing a new platform for on-chip spatiotemporal manipulation of optical pulses with applications including ultrafast on-chip photonic information processing, ultrafast pulse/beam shaping, and optical computing.

Accurate polarization preparation and measurement using twisted nematic liquid crystals.

Generation of particular polarization states of light, encoding information in polarization degree of freedom, and efficient measurement of unknown polarization are the key tasks in optical metrology, optical communications, polarization-sensitive imaging, and photonic information processing. Liquid crystal devices have proved to be indispensable for these tasks, though their limited precision and the requirement of a custom design impose a limit of practical applicability. Here we report fast preparation and detection of polarization states with unprecedented accuracy using liquid-crystal cells extracted from common twisted nematic liquid-crystal displays. To verify the performance of the device we use it to prepare dozens of polarization states with average fidelity 0.999(1) and average angle deviation 0.5(3) deg. Using four-projection minimum tomography as well as six-projection Pauli measurement, we measure polarization states employing the reported device with the average fidelity of 0.999(1). Polarization measurement data are processed by the maximum likelihood method to reach a valid estimate of the polarization state. In addition to the application in classical polarimetry, we also employ the reported liquid-crystal device for full tomographic characterization of a three-mode Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entangled state produced by a photonic quantum processor.

Drawing structured plasmonic field with on-chip metalens

Abstract The ability to draw a structured surface plasmon polariton (SPP) field is an important step toward many new opportunities for a broad range of nanophotonic applications. Previous methods usually require complex experimental systems or holographic optimization algorithms that limit their practical applications. Here, we propose a simple method for flexible generation of structured SPP field with on-chip plasmonic metalenses. The metalens is composed of multiple plasmonic focusing nanostructures whose focal shape and position can be independently manipulated, and through their superposition, SPP fields with specially designed patterns are obtained. Based on this method, we demonstrate several structured SPP fields including S- and W-shaped SPP focal fields and tunable SPP bottle beams. This work could provide new ideas for on-chip manipulation of optical surface waves, and contribute to applications such as on-chip photonic information processing and integrated photonic circuits.

Natural van der Waals heterostructure cylindrite with highly anisotropic optical responses

The mechanical exfoliation of naturally occurring layered materials has emerged as an easy and effective method for achieving ultrathin van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with well-defined lattice orientations of the constituent two-dimensional (2D) material layers. Cylindrite is one such naturally occurring vdW heterostructure, where the superlattice is composed of alternating stacks of SnS2-like and PbS-like layers. Although the constituent 2D lattices are isotropic, inhomogeneous strain occurring from local atomic alignment for forcing the commensuration makes the cylindrite superlattice structurally anisotropic. Here, we demonstrate the highly anisotropic optical responses of cylindrite thin flakes induced by the anisotropic crystal structure, including angle-resolved polarized Raman scattering, linear dichroism, and polarization-dependent anisotropic third-harmonic generation. Our results provide a promising approach for identifying various natural vdW heterostructure-based 2D materials with tailored optical properties and can be harnessed for realizing anisotropic optical devices for on-chip photonic circuits and optical information processing.

Waveguide-lattice-based architecture for multichannel optical transformations.

We consider waveguide lattices as the architecture to implement a wide range of multiport transformations. In this architecture, a particular transfer matrix is obtained by setting step-wise profiles of propagation constants experienced by a field evolving in a lattice. To investigate the capabilities of this architecture, we numerically study the implementation of random transfer matrices as well as several notable cases, such as the discrete Fourier transform, the Hadamard, and permutation matrices. We show that waveguide lattice schemes are more compact than their traditional lumped-parameter counterparts, thus the proposed architecture may be beneficial for photonic information processing systems of the future.

All-optical Sudoku solver with photonic spiking neural network

We proposed a Sudoku solver based on photonic spiking neural network (SNN) consisting of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with an embedded saturable absorber (VCSELs-SA). Here, N2 neurons are adopted to solve the N×N Sudoku puzzle with a unique solution. Values in Sudoku are temporally spike-encoded in different spiking times. The result is also achieved according to the spike timing information. In a network, for these VCSELs-SA belong to the same row or column or quadrant, they are inhibitory connected., i.e., from X polarization (XP) mode to Y polarization (YP) mode. Otherwise, they are excitatory connected, i.e., from XP mode to XP mode. Polarization mode competition (PMC) mechanism of VCSEL-SA is utilized to ensure the priority of inhibition behavior. With numerical simulations, 3 × 3 Sudoku puzzle is successfully solved with the help of inhibitory dynamics of VCSEL-SA. The results are represented by the output spike timing of XP mode of each VCSEL-SA. Furthermore, the photonic SNN is also extended to solve 4 × 4 Sudoku puzzle. This work may be interesting for the brain-inspired photonic neuromorphic information processing.

Observation of second-order meron polarization textures in optical microcavities

Multicomponent Bose–Einstein condensates, quantum Hall systems, and chiral magnetic materials display twists and knots in the continuous symmetries of their order parameters known as skyrmions. Originally discovered as solutions to the nonlinear sigma model in quantum field theory, these vectorial excitations are quantified by a topological winding number dictating their interactions and global properties of the host system. Here, we report the experimental observation of a stable individual second-order meron and antimeron appearing in an electromagnetic field. We realize these complex textures by confining light into a liquid-crystal-filled cavity that, through its anisotropic refractive index, provides an adjustable artificial photonic gauge field that couples the cavity photon motion to its polarization, resulting in the formation of these fundamental vectorial vortex states of light. Our observations could help bring topologically robust room-temperature optical vector textures into the field of photonic information processing and storage.
