A closer look at the electromagnetic signatures of Bethe-Heitler pair production process in blazars

The “twin birth” of a positron and an electron by a photon in the presence of a nucleus, known as Bethe-Heitler pair production, is a key process in astroparticle physics. The Bethe-Heitler process offers a way of channeling energy stored in a population of relativistic protons (or nuclei) to relativistic pairs with extended distributions. Contrary to accelerated leptons, whose maximum energy is limited by radiative losses, the maximal energy of pairs is determined by the kinematics of the process and can be as high as the parent proton energy. We take a closer look at the features of the injected pair distribution, and provide a novel empirical function that describes the spectrum of pairs produced by interactions of single-energy protons with single-energy photons. The function is the kernel of the Bethe-Heitler pair production spectrum that replaces a double numerical integration involving the complex differential cross section of the process, and can be easily implemented in numerical codes. We further examine under which conditions Bethe-Heitler pairs produced in blazar jets can emit γ-ray photons via synchrotron radiation, thus providing an alternative to the inverse Compton scattering process for high-energy emission in jetted active galactic nuclei. For this purpose, we create 36 numerical models using the code ATHEνA optimized so that the Bethe-Heitler synchrotron emission dominates their γ-ray emission. After taking into consideration the broadband spectral characteristics of the source, the jet energetics, and the properties of radiation fields present in the blazar environment, we conclude that γ-rays in high-synchrotron-peaked blazars are unlikely to be produced by Bethe-Heitler pairs, because the emitting region is found to be opaque in photon-photon pair production at photon energies ≳ 10 GeV. On the contrary, γ-ray spectra of low-synchrotron-peaked blazars may arise from Bethe-Heitler pairs in regions of the jet with typical transverse size ∼ 1015 – 1016 cm and co-moving magnetic field 50 – 500 G. For such cases, an external thermal target photon field with temperatures T ∼ 4 · 102– 6 · 103 K is needed. The latter values could point to the dusty torus of the AGN. Interestingly, a Bethe-Heitler-dominated high-energy component is mostly found in models of intermediate-synchrotron peaked blazars, for a wide range of magnetic fields and source radii.

Investigation of the γ-ray spectrum of CTA 102 during the exceptional flaring state in 2016–2017

The flat spectrum radio quasar CTA 102 entered an extended period of activity from 2016 to 2017 during which several strong γ-ray flares were observed. By using Fermi large area telescope data, a detailed investigation of γ-ray spectra of CTA 102 during the flaring period was performed. In several periods, the γ-ray spectrum is not consistent with a simple power-law, having a hard photon index with an index of ∼(1.8−2.0) that shows a spectral cut-off around an observed photon energy of ∼(9−16) GeV. The internal γ-ray absorption via photon-photon pair production on the broad-line-region-reflected photons cannot account for the observed cut-off and break even if the emitting region is very close to the central source. This cut-off and break are likely due to a similar intrinsic break in the energy distribution of emitting particles. The origin of the spectral break is investigated through the multiwavelength modeling of the spectral energy distribution in considering a different location for the emitting region. The observed X-ray and γ-ray data is modeled as inverse Compton scattering of synchrotron and/or external photons on the electron population that produces the radio-to-optical emission, which allowed to constrain the power-law index and cut-off energy in the electron energy distribution. The obtained results are discussed in the context of a diffusive acceleration of electrons in the CTA 102 jet.

THE MYSTERY OF SPECTRAL BREAKS: LYMAN CONTINUUM ABSORPTION BY PHOTON-PHOTON PAIR PRODUCTION IN THEFERMIGeV SPECTRA OF BRIGHT BLAZARS

We reanalyze Fermi/LAT gamma-ray spectra of bright blazars with a higher photon statistics than in previous works and with new Pass 7 data representation. In the spectra of the brightest blazar 3C 454.3 and possibly of 4C +21.35 we detect breaks at 5 GeV (in the rest frame) associated with the photon-photon pair production absorption by He II Lyman continuum (LyC). We also detect confident breaks at 20 GeV associated with hydrogen LyC both in the individual spectra and in the stacked redshift-corrected spectrum of several bright blazars. The detected breaks in the stacked spectra univocally prove that they are associated with atomic ultraviolet emission features of the quasar broad-line region (BLR). The dominance of the absorption by hydrogen Ly complex over He II, rather small detected optical depth, and the break energy consistent with the head-on collisions with LyC photons imply that the gamma-ray emission site is located within the BLR, but most of the BLR emission comes from a flat disk-like structure producing little opacity. Alternatively, the LyC emission region size might be larger than the BLR size measured from reverberation mapping, and/or the gamma-ray emitting region is extended. These solutions would resolve a long-standing issue how the multi-hundred GeV photons can escape from the emission zone without being absorbed by softer photons.

DETECTION OF THE COSMIC γ-RAY HORIZON FROM MULTIWAVELENGTH OBSERVATIONS OF BLAZARS

The first statistically significant detection of the cosmic \gamma-ray horizon (CGRH) that is independent of any extragalactic background light (EBL) model is presented. The CGRH is a fundamental quantity in cosmology. It gives an estimate of the opacity of the Universe to very high energy (VHE) \gamma-ray photons due to photon-photon pair production with the EBL. The only estimations of the CGRH to date are predictions from EBL models and lower limits from \gamma-ray observations of cosmological blazars and \gamma-ray bursts. Here, we present homogeneous synchrotron/synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) models of the spectral energy distributions of 15 blazars based on (almost) simultaneous observations from radio up to the highest energy \gamma-rays taken with the Fermi satellite. These synchrotron/SSC models predict the unattenuated VHE fluxes, which are compared with the observations by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. This comparison provides an estimate of the optical depth of the EBL, which allows a derivation of the CGRH through a maximum likelihood analysis that is EBL-model independent. We find that the observed CGRH is compatible with the current knowledge of the EBL.

GAMMA-RAY SIGNAL FROM THE PULSAR WIND IN THE BINARY PULSAR SYSTEM PSR B1259–63/LS 2883

Binary pulsar systems emit potentially detectable components of gamma ray emission due to Comptonization of the optical radiation of the companion star by relativistic electrons of the pulsar wind, both before and after termination of the wind. The recent optical observations of binary pulsar system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 revealed radiation properties of the companion star which differ significantly from previous measurements. In this paper we study the implications of these observations for the interaction rate of the unshocked pulsar wind with the stellar photons and the related consequences for fluxes of high energy (HE) and very high energy (VHE) gamma rays. We show that the signal should be strong enough to be detected with Fermi close to the periastron passage, unless the pulsar wind is strongly anisotropic or the Lorentz factor of the wind is smaller than $10^3$ or larger that $10^5$. The higher luminosity of the optical star also has two important implications: (i) attenuation of gamma rays due to photon-photon pair production, and (ii) Compton drag of the unshocked wind. While the first effect has an impact on the lightcurve of VHE gamma rays, the second effect may significantly decrease the energy available for particle acceleration after termination of the wind.

ACCELERATING HIGH-ENERGY PULSAR RADIATION CODES

Curvature radiation (CR) is believed to be a dominant mechanism for creating gamma-ray emission from pulsars and is emitted by relativistic particles that are constrained to move along curved magnetic field lines. Additionally, synchrotron radiation (SR) is expected to be radiated by both relativistic primaries (involving cyclotron resonant absorption of radio photons and re-emission of SR photons), or secondary electron-positron pairs (created by magnetic or photon-photon pair production processes involving CR gamma rays in the pulsar magnetosphere). When calculating these high-energy spectra, especially in the context of pulsar population studies where several millions of CR and SR spectra have to be generated, it is profitable to consider approximations that would save computational time without sacrificing too much accuracy. This paper focuses on one such approximation technique, and we show that one may gain significantly in computational speed while preserving the accuracy of the spectral results.

A METHOD FOR SETTING UPPER LIMITS TO THE EXTRAGALACTIC BACKGROUND LIGHT WITH FERMI -LAT AND TeV OBSERVATIONS OF BLAZARS

We propose a method for setting upper limits to the extragalactic background light (EBL). Our method uses simultaneous {\em Fermi}-LAT and ground-based TeV observations of blazars and is based on the assumption that the intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) of TeV blazars lies below the extrapolation of the {\em Fermi}-LAT SED from GeV to TeV energies. By extrapolating the {\em Fermi}-LAT spectrum, which for TeV blazars is practically unattenuated by photon-photon pair production with EBL photons, a firm upper limit on the intrinsic SED at TeV energies is provided. The ratio of the extrapolated spectrum to the observed TeV spectrum provides upper limits to the optical depth for the propagation of the TeV photons due to pair production on the EBL, which in turn sets firm upper limits to EBL models. We demonstrate our method using simultaneous observations from {\em Fermi}-LAT and ground-based TeV telescopes of the blazars \object{PKS 2155-304} and \object{1ES 1218+304}, and show that high EBL density models are disfavored. We also discuss how our method can be optimized and how {\em Fermi} and X-ray monitoring observations of TeV blazars can guide future TeV campaigns, leading to potentially much stronger constraints on EBL models.

A REVISIT OF THE TWO-POLE CAUSTIC MODEL FOR GeV LIGHT CURVES OF GAMMA-RAY PULSARS

The GeV light curve of a pulsar is an important probe to detect acceleration regions in its magnetosphere. Motivated by the recent reports on the observations of pulsars by {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT), we restudy the two-pole caustic model and revise it to investigate the properties of the light curves in the GeV band. In the revised model, although acceleration gaps can extend from the star surface to the light cylinder along near the last open field lines, the extension of the gaps along the azimuthal direction is limited because of photon-photon pair production process. In such gaps, high-energy photons are emitted uniformly and tangentially to the field lines but cannot be efficiently produced along these field lines where the distances to the null charge surface are larger than $\sim0.9$ times of the distance of the light cylinder, and the effective azimuth extension of the gaps is about $230^\circ$. The model is applied to the four pulsars Vela, PSR J1028-5819, PSR J0205+6449, and PSR J2021+3651 whose light curves obtained with {\it Fermi} have been recently released. The model is successful in reproducing the general feature of the light curves for the four pulsars, and the radial distances of the radio pulse for the four pulsars are estimated.

ONE-DIMENSIONAL ACCELERATOR IN PULSAR OUTER MAGNETOSPHERE REVISITED

We re-examine the one-dimensional (1D) vacuum and nonvacuum accelerators in the outer magnetosphere of rotation-powered pulsars by considering the limit of trans-field height through pair-production process. In the original 1D nonvacuum outer gap model, both the Poisson equation for electrical potential and the Boltzmann equations of particles and γ-rays are solved self-consistently by assuming the trans-field height as a free parameter, usually resulting in a narrow outer gap (i.e., gap length along magnetic field lines is short). In the modified 1D nonvacuum outer gap model, two improvements have been made: the trans-field height is limited by photon-photon pair production process and the outer boundary of the outer gap can be extended outside the light cylinder. Under the above assumptions, we self-consistently solve the Poisson equation for electrical potential, and the Boltzmann equations of electrons/positrons and γ-rays in both vacuum and nonvacuum outer gaps for the parameters of both Vela and Geminga pulsars. We obtain an approximate geometry of the outer gap, i.e., the trans-field height is limited by the pair-production process and increases with the radial distance to the star, and the width of the outer gap starts at the inner boundary (near the null charge surface in the vacuum case) and ends at the outer boundary which is located inside or outside the light cylinder depending on the inclination angle. Our calculated results also indicate that γ-ray spectrum from a wide outer gap is flatter than the one from a narrow outer gap and the relation between the electric field and trans-field height has an important effect on the structure of the outer gap.

EARLY FERMI GAMMA-RAY SPACE TELESCOPE OBSERVATIONS OF THE QUASAR 3C 454.3

This is the first report of Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope observations of the quasar 3C 454.3, which has been undergoing pronounced long-term outbursts since 2000. The data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT), covering 2008 July 7 - October 6, indicate strong, highly variable gamma-ray emission with an average flux of ~3 x 10^{-6} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}, for energies above 100 MeV. The gamma-ray flux is variable, with strong, distinct, symmetrically-shaped flares for which the flux increases by a factor of several on a time scale of about three days. This variability indicates a compact emission region, and the requirement that the source is optically thin to pair-production implies relativistic beaming with Doppler factor delta > 8, consistent with the values inferred from VLBI observations of superluminal expansion (delta ~ 25). The observed gamma-ray spectrum is not consistent with a simple power-law, but instead steepens strongly above ~2 GeV, and is well described by a broken power-law with photon indices of ~2.3 and ~3.5 below and above the break, respectively. This is the first direct observation of a break in the spectrum of a high luminosity blazar above 100 MeV, and it is likely direct evidence for an intrinsic break in the energy distribution of the radiating particles. Alternatively, the spectral softening above 2 GeV could be due to gamma-ray absorption via photon-photon pair production on the soft X-ray photon field of the host AGN, but such an interpretation would require the dissipation region to be located very close (less than 100 gravitational radii) to the black hole, which would be inconsistent with the X-ray spectrum of the source.

STUDY OF THE SPECTRAL AND TEMPORAL CHARACTERISTICS OF X-RAY EMISSION OF THE GAMMA-RAY BINARY LS 5039 WITHSUZAKU

We report on the results from Suzaku broadband X-ray observations of the galactic binary source LS5039. The Suzaku data, which have continuous coverage of more than one orbital period, show strong modulation of the X-ray emission at the orbital period of this TeV gamma-ray emitting system.The X-ray emission shows a minimum at orbital phase ~ 0.1, close to the so-called superior conjunction of the compact object, and a maximum at phase ~0.7, very close to the inferior conjunction of the compact object. The X-ray spectral data up to 70 keV are described by a hard power-law with a phase-dependent photon index which varies within Gamma ~1.45 - 1.61. The amplitude of the flux variation is a factor of 2.5, but is significantly less than that of the factor ~8 variation in the TeV flux. Otherwise the two light curves are similar, but not identical. Although periodic X-ray emission has been found from many galactic binary systems, the Suzaku result implies a phenomenon different from the "standard" origin of X-rays related to the emission of the hot accretion plasma formed around the compact companion object. The X-ray radiation of LS5039is likely to be linked to very-high-energy electrons which are also responsible for the TeV gamma-ray emission. While the gamma-rays are the result of inverse Compton scattering by electrons on optical stellar photons, X-rays are produced via synchrotron radiation. Yet, while the modulation of the TeV gamma-ray signal can be naturally explained by the photon-photon pair production and anisotropic inverse Compton scattering, the observed modulation of synchrotron X-rays requires an additional process, the most natural one being adiabatic expansion in the radiation production region.

Vacuum Outer-Gap Structure in Pulsar Outer Magnetospheres

We study the vacuum outer-gap structure in the outer magnetosphere of rotation-powered pulsars by considering the limit of trans-field height through a pair production process. In this case, the trans-field height is limited by the photon-photon pair production process and the outer boundary of the outer gap can be extended outside the light cylinder. By solving self-consistently the Poisson equation for electrical potential and the Boltzmann equations of electrons/positrons and γ-rays in a vacuum outer gap for the parameters of Vela pulsar, we obtain an approximate geometry of the outer gap, i.e. the trans-field height is limited by the pair-production process and increases with the radial distance to the star and the width of the outer gap starts at the inner boundary (near the null charge surface) and ends at the outer boundary which locates inside or outside the light cylinder depending on the inclination angle.

Absorption of 10 GeV–1 TeV Gamma Rays by Radiation from the Broad‐Line Region in 3C 279

We study the photon-photon pair production optical depth for 10 GeV-1 TeV gamma rays from 3C 279 due to the diffuse radiation of the broad-line region (BLR). Assuming a power-law spectrum a1 for the photon intensity of very high energy gamma rays, a1 ≳ 405 and a2 ≳ 6.4 are inferred from the integrated photon fluxes measured by MAGIC and H.E.S.S. Based on this power-law spectrum, the preabsorbed spectra are calculated by correcting for photon-photon absorption on the diffuse photons of the BLR (internal absorption) and the extragalactic background light (external absorption). The position of the gamma-ray-emitting region, Rγ, determines the relative contributions of these two diffuse radiation components to the total absorption for 10 GeV-1 TeV gamma rays. The internal absorption could make the spectral shape of the gamma rays more complex than if they were corrected only for external absorption and could lead to the formation of arbitrarily softening and hardening gamma-ray spectra. It should be requisite for the internal absorption to be considered in studying 10 GeV-1 TeV gamma rays from powerful blazars. The energy of the annihilated gamma-ray photons due to the internal absorption is likely to be mainly reradiated around GeV energies. Our results indicate that Rγ may lie between the inner and outer radii of the BLR for 3C 279. This implies for powerful blazars that Rγ might be neither inside the BLR cavity nor outside the BLR, but within the BLR shell. Observations by GLAST, MAGIC, H.E.S.S., and VERITAS in the near future could provide more constraints on the position of the gamma-ray-emitting region relative to the BLR.

The Redshift Dependence of Gamma‐Ray Absorption in the Environments of Strong‐Line AGNs

The case of {gamma}-ray absorption due to photon-photon pair production of jet photons in the external photon environments, such as the accretion disk and the broad-line region radiation fields, of {gamma}-ray--loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that exhibit strong emission lines is considered. I demonstrate that this 'local opacity,' if detected, will almost unavoidably be redshift-dependent in the sub-TeV range. This introduces nonnegligible biases and complicates approaches for studying the evolution of the extragalactic background light with contemporary GeV instruments such as the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST ), where the {gamma}-ray horizon is probed by means of statistical analysis of absorption features (e.g., the Fazio-Stecker relation) in AGN spectra at various redshifts. It particularly applies to strong-line quasars, where external photon fields are potentially involved in {gamma}-ray production.

Absorption of 10–200 GeV Gamma Rays by Radiation from Broad‐Line Regions in Blazars

In this paper, we study the photon-photon pair production optical depth for gamma-rays with energies from 10 to 200 GeV emitted by powerful blazars due to the diffuse radiation field of broad line region (BLR). There are four key parameters in the BLR model employed to determine the $\gamma-\gamma$ attenuation optical depth of these gamma-rays. They are the gamma-ray emitting radius $R_{\gamma}$, the BLR luminosity $L_{\rm{BLR}}$, the BLR half thickness $h$ and the ratio $\tau_{\rm{BLR}}/f_{\rm{cov}}$ of the Thomson optical depth to the covering factor of BLR. For FSRQs, on average, it is impossible for gamma-rays with energies from 10 to 200 GeV to escape from the diffuse radiation field of the BLR. If $\it GLAST$ could detect these gamma-rays for most of FSRQs, the gamma-ray emitting region is likely to be outside the cavity formed by the BLR. Otherwise, the emitting region is likely to be inside the BLR cavity. As examples, we estimate the photon-photon absorption optical depth of gamma-rays with energies from 10 to 200 GeV for two powerful blazars, HFSRQ PKS 0405$-$123 and FSRQ 3C 279. Comparing our results with $\it GLAST$ observations in the future could test whether the model employed and the relevant assumptions in this paper are reliable and reasonable, and then limit constraints on the position of the gamma-ray emitting region relative to the BLR and the properties of the BLR.

Nonthermal High‐Energy Emission from Colliding Winds of Massive Stars

Colliding winds of massive star binary systems are considered as potential sites of nonthermal high-energy photon production. Motivated by the detection of synchrotron radio emission from the colliding wind location, we here investigate the properties of high-energy photon production in colliding winds of long-period WR+OB systems. Analytical formulae for the steady state proton- and electron-particle spectra are derived assuming diffusive particle accelerationoutofapoolofthermalwindparticles,takinginto account adiabaticand allrelevantradiative losses,and includeadvection/convection out of the wind collision zone. This includes analytical approximations for the electron energy losses in the Klein-Nishina transition regime. For the first time in the context of CWB systems, our calculations use the full Klein-Nishina cross section and account for the anisotropy of the inverse Compton scattering process. This leads to orbitalfluxvariations byupto several orders of magnitude, which may, however,beblurredby the system’s geometry. Both anisotropy and Klein-Nishina effects may yield characteristic spectral and variability signatures in the � -ray domain. Since propagation effects lead to a deficit of low-energy particles in the convectiondominated zone, one expects imprints in the radiation spectra. If protons are accelerated to at least several GeV, � 0 -decay � -rays might be observable, depending on the injected electron-to-proton ratio. We show that photon-photon pair production is generally not negligible, potentially affecting the emitted spectrum above � 50 GeV, depending on orbital phase and system inclination. The calculations are applied to the archetypal WR+OB systems WR 140 and WR 147 to predict their expected spectral and temporal characteristics and to assess their detectability with current and upcoming � -ray experiments. High‐Energy Gamma Rays from the Massive Black Hole in the Galactic Center

Accreting black holes are believed to be sites of possible particle acceleration with favorable conditions also for effective gamma-ray production. However, because of photon-photon pair production, only low energy (MeV) gamma-rays can escape these compact objects with typically very large compactness parameter, given that in most cases the accretion disks within 10 Schwarzschild radii radiate with a power exceeding 10 percent of the Eddington luminosity. Therefore, the high-energy gamma-ray emission of these objects (both stellar mass and supermassive BHs) is generally suppressed, and consequently the unique information on possible particle acceleration process near the event horizon of the BH is essentially lost. Fortunately, this is not the case for the super-massive BH located at the dynamical center of our Galaxy (Sgr A*) which, thanks to its extraordinary low bolometric luminosity is transparent fo gamma-rays up to very high energies, about 10 TeV. We discuss different scenarios of gamma-ray production in Sgr A* and show that for a reasonable set of parameters one can expect detectable gamma-ray fluxes of both hadronic and electronic origin. Some of these scenarios are applicable not only for the TeV gamma-ray emission recently reported from the direction of Galactic Center, but may have broader implications relevant to highly variable nonthermal emission of Sgr A* in radio, IR and X-ray bands.

Particle acceleration in relativistic current sheets.

Relativistic current sheets have been proposed as the sites of dissipation in pulsar winds, jets in active galaxies, and other Poynting flux dominated flows. It is shown that the steady versions of these structures differ from their nonrelativistic counterparts because they do not permit transformation to a de Hofmann-Teller frame with zero electric field. Instead, their generic form is that of a true neutral sheet with no linking magnetic field component normal to the sheet. The maximum energy to which such structures can accelerate particles is derived, and used to compute the maximum frequency of the subsequent synchrotron radiation. This can be substantially in excess of standard estimates. In the magnetically driven gamma-ray burst scenario, acceleration of electrons is possible to energies sufficient to enable photon-photon pair production after an inverse Compton scattering event.

Electromagnetic catastrophe in ultrarelativistic shocks and the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts

It is shown that an ultrarelativistic shock with the Lorentz factor of order of tens or higher propagating in a moderately dense interstellar medium (density above $\sim 1000 $ cm$^{-3}$) undergoes a fast dramatic transformation into a highly radiative state. The process leading to this phenomenon resembles the first order Fermi acceleration with the difference that the energy is transported across the shock front by photons rather than protons. The reflection of the energy flux crossing the shock front in both directions is due to photon-photon pair production and Compton scattering. Such mechanism initiates a runaway nonlinear pair cascade fed directly by the kinetic energy of the shock. Eventually the cascade feeds back the fluid dynamics, converting the sharp shock front into a smooth velocity gradient and the runaway evolution changes to a quasi-steady state regime. This effect has been studied numerically using the nonlinear Large Particle Monte-Carlo code for the electromagnetic component and a simplified hydrodynamic description of the fluid. The most interesting application of the effect is the phenomenon of gamma-ray bursts where it explains a high radiative efficiencyand gives a perspective to explain spectra of GRBs and their time variability. The results predict a phenomenon of ``GeV bursts'' which arise if the density of the external medium is not sufficiently high to provide a large compactness.

Gamma Ray and Infrared Emission from the M87 Jet and Torus

The existence of intrinsic obscuration of Fanaroff-Riley I objects is a controversial topic. M87, the nearest such object, is puzzling in that although it has very massive central black hole it has a relatively low luminosity, suggesting it is in a dormant state. Despite of its proximity to us (16 Mpc) it is not known with certainty whether or not M87 has a dusty torus. Infrared observations indicate that if a torus exists in M87 it must have a rather low infrared luminosity. Using arguments from unification theory of active galactic nuclei, we have earlier suggested that the inner parsec-scale region of M87 could still harbour a small torus sufficiently cold such that its infrared emission is dwarfed by the jet emission. The infrared emission from even a small cold torus could affect through photon-photon pair production interactions the escape of 100 GeV to TeV energy gamma rays from the central parsec of M87. The TeV gamma-ray flux from the inner jet of M87 has recently been predicted in the context of the Synchrotron Proton Blazar (SPB) model to extend up to at least 100 GeV (Protheroe, Donea, Reimer, 2002). Subsequently, the detection of gamma-rays above 730 GeV by the HEGRA Cherenkov telescopes has been reported. We discuss the interactions of gamma-rays produced in the inner jet of M87 with the weak infrared radiation expected from a possible dusty small-scale torus, and show that the HEGRA detection shows that the temperature of any torus surrounding the gamma-ray emission region must be cooler than about 250 K. We suggest that if no gamma-rays are in future detected during extreme flaring activity in M87 at other wavelength, this may be expected because of torus heating.
