Framework for evaluating photon-counting detectors under pile-up conditions.

While X-ray photon-counting detectors (PCDs) promise to revolutionize medical imaging, theoretical frameworks to evaluate them are commonly limited to incident fluence rates sufficiently low that the detector response can be considered linear. However, typical clinical operating conditions lead to a significant level of pile-up, invalidating this assumption of a linear response. Here, we present a framework that aims to evaluate PCDs, taking into account their non-linear behavior. We employ small-signal analysis to study the behavior of PCDs under pile-up conditions. The response is approximated as linear around a given operating point, determined by the incident spectrum and fluence rate. The detector response is subsequently described by the proposed perturbation point spread function (pPSF). We demonstrate this approach using Monte-Carlo simulations of idealized direct- and indirect-conversion PCDs. The pPSFs of two PCDs are calculated. It is then shown how the pPSF allows to determine the sensitivity of the detector signal to an arbitrary lesion. This example illustrates the detrimental influence of pile-up, which may cause non-intuitive effects such as contrast/contrast-to-noise ratio inversion or cancellation between/within energy bins. The proposed framework permits quantifying the spectral and spatial performance of PCDs under clinically realistic conditions at a given operating point. The presented example illustrates why PCDs should not be analyzed assuming that they are linear systems. The framework can, for example, be used to guide the development of PCDs and PCD-based systems. Furthermore, it can be applied to adapt commonly used measures, such as the modulation transfer function, to non-linear PCDs.

Speckle-based imaging (SBI) applications with spectral photon counting detectors at the newly established OPTIMATO(OPTimal IMAging and TOmography) laboratory

Speckle-based imaging (SBI) is an advanced X-ray imaging technique that measures phase and dark-field signals, in addition to absorption signals. SBI uses random wavefront modulators to generate speckles and requires two images: one with a speckle pattern alone, and one with both the sample and speckles. SBI reconstruction algorithms retrieve three signals (transmission, refraction, and dark-field) by comparing the two images. In SBI, speckle visibility plays a crucial role in the retrieval of the three signals. When translating the technique from synchrotron sources to compact laboratory setups, the reduced coherence of the source and limitations in the available resolution yield lower speckle visibility, hampering the retrieval of phase and dark-field signals. In this context, direct-detection CdTe X-ray photon-counting detectors (XPCDs) provide an attractive solution, as they allow for a high detection efficiency and optimal spatial resolution enhancing speckle visibility. In this work, we present the newly established OPTIMATO (OPTimal IMAging and TOmography) laboratory for X-ray imaging hosted at the Elettra synchrotron (Trieste, Italy). The setup for SBI with resolutions up to 15 µm including an XPCD and a charge-integrating flat-panel detector (FPD) has been used to acquire SBI data. The main limiting factors when moving SBI applications from synchrotron facilities to compact laboratory setups are summarized. The advantages of XPCDs over FPDs are discussed by comparing the SBI images obtained using both detectors. The potential of the spectral decomposition approach via multi-threshold acquisitions using XPCDs is briefly introduced. The results shown in this work represent the first step toward the realization of a multimodal and multiresolution X-ray facility.

Evaluation of rate capability of SiPM-based X-ray counting detector

Scintillation radiation detectors based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are widely used nowadays both in various medical apparatus and physics experiments, e.g., in PET. At the same time, this technology has great potential in terms of creating X-ray photon counting detectors, which are in demand both in medicine and applied research. In this work, we investigate the influence of main SiPM parameters on the overall system performance, as well as different methods of data readout. It is shown that the use of SiPMs with shorter cell recovery time and larger number of microcells makes it possible to achieve a rate capability of 12 Mcps (mega counts per second) per channel. At the same time, the scintillator decay time is still among the limiting factors for such systems.

Photon counting x-ray detectors as scatter probes.

Direct conversion x-ray Photon Counting Detectors (PCD) are posed to play a vital role in future medical imaging devices such as Computed Tomography (CT) scanners. PCD are expected to improve current CT technology on several fronts, such as resolution, dose utilization, and spectral performance. However, they are not readily expected to improve the handling of object scatter, one of the major sources of image artifacts in CT technology. We explore a potential method for obtaining in-situ object scatter estimation using the same PCD array used in the x-ray imaging system, such as in computed tomography. This unexpected benefit of using PCD has the potential to improve the image quality by providing better input into the scatter estimation and correction algorithms used in image reconstruction. In CT scanners the primary method for rejecting scatter signal originating from the scanned object relies on placing anti-scatter grids (ASG) close to the detector plane. This remains the case when transitioning to using PCD instead of energy integration detectors in CT. However, the combination of PCD and ASG opens a possibility to use some of the unique properties of PCD, namely, very low noise and coincidence counters to obtain, in addition to the attenuation data, a simultaneous and instantaneous estimate of the scatter signal reaching every detector element. When a small air gap is introduced between the ASG and the detector surface, the scatter radiation with large angular distribution has a greater probability of producing charge sharing events that can be detected by a coincidence counter. In this work we demonstrate the feasibility of such an approach in a tabletop experiment using PCD detector that lacks coincidence counting capability, instead we use the spectral signature of split charge events as proxy to coincidence counting. For this purpose, we first demonstrate the spectral impact of ASG misalignment using the same experimental setup. In addition, we perform a separate tabletop scattering experiment from a narrow column of water that demonstrates another potential use of the low noise capabilities of PCDs. We measured and quantified the high sensitivity of the spectral response to ASG alignment on the PCD detector pixel array, we found that the probability of energy misregistration of 60keV photons can increase by up to a factor of 3 when the ASG is poorly aligned. We then leveraged these results to obtain an estimate on the expected increase in coincidence counts for a wide range of scatter-to-primary (SPR) ratio and find a good match with expectations from a geometric modeling of the system, where the expected increase in coincidences was of the order of the SPR. Finally, the low noise detector also allowed us to measure the real space scatter signal associated with the coherent molecular form factor of water, revealing the ring-shaped scatter signal with an energy dependent distribution that was well captured by calculation. The advent of PCD detectors and their imminent use in commercial CT scanners opens new and exciting possibilities for utilizing PCD detectors in unexpected ways. In this proof-of-concept study, we showed how charge sharing, a spectral information degrading effect, can instead be used to obtain in-situ scatter estimation. We also demonstrated the PCD ability to perform extremely sensitive measurements using affordable benchtop setup for investigations normally reserved for synchrotron facilities.

High temperature X-ray and γ-ray spectroscopy with a diamond detector

A single crystal chemical vapour deposition diamond detector was electrically characterised and then investigated as a spectroscopic photon counting X-ray and γ-ray detector across the temperature range, T, −20 °C ≤ T ≤ 100 °C. The detector was connected to a custom-built charge-sensitive preamplifier of low electronic noise and illuminated in turn by 55Fe radioisotope X-ray and 109Cd radioisotope X-ray and γ-ray sources. In combination, the radiation sources provided characteristic soft (e.g. 5.9 keV) and hard (e.g. 22.16 keV) X-rays and 88.03 keV γ-ray emissions. The Mn Kα (5.9 keV) and Kβ (6.49 keV) X-ray emissions from the 55Fe radioisotope X-ray source were detected (and separated from the zero energy noise peak) at temperatures of −20 °C ≤ T ≤ 60 °C; the Ag Kα (22.16 and 21.99 keV) and Kβ (24.94, 24.99, and 25.46 keV) X-ray emissions and 88.03 keV γ-ray emissions were detectable across the entire temperature range investigated (−20 °C ≤ T ≤ 100 °C). The detector and the preamplifier were operated without cooling across the entire temperature range. The energy resolution (full width at half maximum) at 22.16 keV (Ag Kα1) was 4.57 keV ± 0.26 keV at 100 °C and 2.70 keV ± 0.18 keV at −20 °C. Noise analysis indicated that the combination of dielectric noise and any incomplete charge collection noise present dominated the other noise components at 5.9 keV. When the detector was illuminated with the 109Cd radioisotope X-ray and γ-ray source, a high count rate introduced parasitic effects (possibly baseline shift) which reduced the optimum shaping time of the spectrometer.

Pulse pileup model for spectral resolved X-ray photon-counting detectors with dead time and retrigger capability

We developed an analytical model to evaluate the effect of signal pileup on the recorded energy spectrum in X-ray photon-counting detectors affected by dead time and equipped with retrigger capability. The retrigger function allows the system to work in a specific non-paralyzable counting mode by counting the time-over-threshold of piled-up signals in multiples of a predefined and selectable retrigger time. The model, designed for rectangle-like-shaped signals, allows for arbitrary input energy spectra and can significantly help understand and optimize the behavior of counting detectors with spectral capabilities and retrigger mechanisms in applications involving polychromatic beams, e.g., spectral X-ray imaging and computed tomography (CT), in a time-efficient way. Dedicated numerical simulations were used to validate the model under several conditions of incoming flux and threshold energy, with excellent results.

Empirical optimization of energy bin weights for compressing measurements with realistic photon counting x-ray detectors.

Photon counting detectors (PCDs) provide higher spatial resolution, improved contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and energy discriminating capabilities. However, the greatly increased amount of projection data in photon counting computed tomography (PCCT) systems becomes challenging to transmit through the slip ring, process, and store. This study proposes and evaluates an empirical optimization algorithm to obtain optimal energy weights for energy bin data compression. This algorithm is universally applicable to spectral imaging tasks including 2 and 3 material decomposition (MD) tasks and virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs). This method is simple to implement while preserving spectral information for the full range of object thicknesses and is applicable to different PCDs, for example, silicon detectors and CdTe detectors. We used realistic detector energy response models to simulate the spectral response of different PCDs and an empirical calibration method to fit a semi-empirical forward model for each PCD. We numerically optimized the optimal energy weights by minimizing the average relative Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) due to the energy-weighted bin compression, for MD and VMI tasks over a range of material area density (0-40g/cm2 water, 0-2.16g/cm2 calcium). We used Monte Carlo simulation of a step wedge phantom and an anthropomorphic head phantom to evaluate the performance of this energy bin compression method in the projection domain and image domain, respectively. The results show that for 2 MD, the energy bin compression method can reduce PCCT data size by 75% and 60%, with an average variance penalty of less than 17% and 3% for silicon and CdTe detectors, respectively. For 3 MD tasks with a K-edge material (iodine), this method can reduce the data size by 62.5% and 40% with an average variance penalty of less than 12% and 13% for silicon and CdTe detectors, respectively. We proposed an energy bin compression method that is broadly applicable to different PCCT systems and object sizes, with high data compression ratio and little loss of spectral information.

Degradation of signal-to-noise ratio in counting detectors due to pile-up effects

This work proposes a methodology to quantify how the non-linearity of counting detectors due to pulse pile-up effects impacts detrimentally the signal-to-noise ratio of measurements and the resulting DQE. The method is presented from a conceptual point of view, justified and validated by both analytical and Monte Carlo methods applied to the ideal theoretical pile-up models usually discussed in the literature. Although the motivation of this work is the application to photon counting X-ray detectors, the study may be relevant for other type of particle or radiation detection systems operating at high count rate regimes, when pile-up is not negligible. The high count rates can be managed in actual experiments by implementing pile-up compensation methods in the detector readout chain, by applying correction algorithms to the measured data or by a combination of both. What has been less discussed in literature is the impact of those pile-up compensation techniques on the final statistical properties of the resulting data, and the proposed method can be potentially used for that purpose. The application of the method to more realistic systems is illustrated with an example of a simulated 2D X-ray photon counting detector that includes all the primary physical effects and the full readout chain.

Multi-voltage threshold digitizer using a time-varied threshold for photon-counting X-ray security inspection imaging

In this paper, we present a multi-voltage threshold (MVT) digitizer using a time-varied threshold and investigate the feasibility of using this digitizer to develop the data acquisition system for photon-counting X-ray security inspection imaging. This digitizer compares the scintillation pulse with a preset time-varied voltage signal and records the time information of the intersections. As the amplitude of the threshold varies as a function of time, the voltage values of the intersections could be calculated using the recorded time, and the energy information could be extracted via the acquired time–voltage samples. Unlike the constant voltage thresholds MVT digitizer requiring multiple voltage comparators, this method needs only one voltage comparator, which notably reduces the complexity in configuration. We demonstrate the development of such an MVT digitizer using a sine signal threshold and evaluate its energy performance with a yttrium orthosilicate (YSO) scintillator and Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) detector (designed for X-ray detection). The digitizer obtains energy resolutions of 41.4%, 26.6%, and 25.5% at 30, 59.5, and 80.9 keV, respectively. For comparison, the YSO/SiPM detector is also evaluated with a high-speed oscilloscope, and measured energy resolutions are 40.6%, 26.5%, and 25.1% at 30, 59.5, and 80.9 keV, respectively. These results indicate that the proposed MVT digitizer using a time-varied threshold is a promising method for developing a YSO/SiPM-based photon-counting X-ray detector.

Characterization of charge sharing and fluorescence effects by multiple counts analysis in a Pixie-II based detection system

In CdTe X-ray photon counting detectors (PCD) featuring small pixel sizes (<100µm), charge-sharing and fluorescences emitted by Cd and Te are responsible for multiple counts from a single interacting photon. These effects can impair the imaging and spectroscopic performance of PCDs. Multiple counts can be partially or totally discriminated by properly setting the energy threshold implemented by the PCD system. Using monochromatic radiation and the Pixirad-1/Pixie-II CdTe PCD, this work characterizes and quantifies clusters of multiple counts as a function of energy and threshold.

Experimental optimization of single-exposure dual-energy angiography with photon-counting x-ray detectors.

Photon-counting x-ray detectors may enable single-exposure dual-energy (DE) x-rayangiography. The purpose of this paper is to experimentally optimize the energy thresholds and tube voltage for single-exposure DE x-rayangiography. We optimized single-exposure DE x-ray angiography using the iodine signal-difference-to-noise ratio (SDNR) per root patient air kerma (κ) as a figureof merit. We measured the iodine SDNR by imaging an iodine stepwedge immersed in a water tank with a depth of 30cm in the direction of x-ray propagation. The stepwedge was imaged using tube voltages ranging from 90 to 150kV and a cadmium telluride (CdTe) x-ray detector with two energy bins and analog charge summing for charge sharing suppression. The energy threshold that separates the two energy bins was varied from approximately 35keV to approximately 75% of the maximum energy of the x-ray beam. Curve fitting was used to determine the threshold that maximized . The effect of scatter was determined from measurements of the scatter-to-primary ratios (SPRs) of the low-energy and high-energy images and a semi-empirical model of the relationship between SDNR and SPR. Using the optimal parameters, we imaged a phantom with vessel-simulating structures and backgroundclutter. The optimal energy thresholds increased monotonically from ∼50 to ∼85keV over the range of tube voltages considered. For tube voltages greater than 90kV, the optimal energy thresholds consistently allocated approximately two thirds of all detected primary photons to the low energy bin; this ratio was preserved without scatter. Consistent with prior modeling studies, increased monotonically with tube voltage from 90 to 150kV; at 150kV was approximately 38% higher than that at 90kV for an iodine area density of ∼50mg/cm2 . Scatter reduced SDNR by approximately 25% for SPRs of ∼1 and 0.4 in low-energy and high-energy images, respectively. Achieving optimal image quality in single-exposure DE angiography with photon-counting x-ray detectors will require high tube voltages (i.e.,>130kV) and, for thick patients, energy thresholds that allocate approximately two thirds of all primary photons to the low-energy image. Future work will compare the image quality of singe-exposure photon-counting and kV-switching approaches to DE x-rayangiography.

Development and validation of a simulation tool for K-edge Subtraction imaging with polychromatic spectra and X-ray photon counting detectors

In K-Edge Subtraction (KES) imaging the K-edge of a high-Z contrast medium is used to generate a differential image in which, in principle, only the contrast agent is visible, suppressing any background. A possible approach to KES imaging is by using polychromatic spectra and spectral X-ray photon counting detectors (XPCD). In this paper we present the development and validation of a simulation tool for KES imaging with spectral XPCD. In addition an analytical formula, based on theoretical considerations, is derived, that further supports the simulation results. The validation is made on experimental data obtained with an X-ray tube, an iodine-based contrast agent, and Pixirad-1/Pixie-III detection system.

Precise phase retrieval for propagation-based images using discrete mathematics

The ill-posed problem of phase retrieval in optics, using one or more intensity measurements, has a multitude of applications using electromagnetic or matter waves. Many phase retrieval algorithms are computed on pixel arrays using discrete Fourier transforms due to their high computational efficiency. However, the mathematics underpinning these algorithms is typically formulated using continuous mathematics, which can result in a loss of spatial resolution in the reconstructed images. Herein we investigate how phase retrieval algorithms for propagation-based phase-contrast X-ray imaging can be rederived using discrete mathematics and result in more precise retrieval for single- and multi-material objects and for spectral image decomposition. We validate this theory through experimental measurements of spatial resolution using computed tomography (CT) reconstructions of plastic phantoms and biological tissues, using detectors with a range of imaging system point spread functions (PSFs). We demonstrate that if the PSF substantially suppresses high spatial frequencies, the potential improvement from utilising the discrete derivation is limited. However, with detectors characterised by a single pixel PSF (e.g. direct, photon-counting X-ray detectors), a significant improvement in spatial resolution can be obtained, demonstrated here at up to 17%.

Perovskite CsPbBr3 Single Crystal Detector for High Flux X-Ray Photon Counting.

X-ray photon-counting detectors capable of resolving the energies of single X-ray photons are critical in medical imaging, and a high count rate is essential for photon-counting detectors. Here, we report the performance of the perovskite CsPbBr3 single-crystal semiconductor detector for X-ray photon counting. The CsPbBr3 detector noise floor, energy response linearity, energy resolution, count rate, and polarization were evaluated. By fine-tuning the detector working conditions, our CsPbBr3 detector with a planar electrode can count an incident X-ray photon rate of ~0.099 and ~0.336 Mcps/pixel at 10% and 30% deadtime loss, respectively, with corresponding energy resolutions of ~18% at 59.5 keV and ~12% at 122 keV at same pulse processing conditions. We also demonstrated that our CsPbBr3 detectors show negligible polarization under an X-ray flux of ~0.45 M photons/s/mm2 for the typical timescale of multiple clinical X-ray scans, such as 1 s- 100 s. Our evaluation demonstrates the high potential of CsPbBr3 detectors for X-ray photon-counting applications in medical and industrial diagnostics with a lower cost than the current state-of-the-art.

Experimental characterization of an X-ray photon counting detector

This paper presents the experimental test results of the X-ray photon counting detectors based on our pixel readout ASIC. The chip integrates a 64 × 128 array of pixels in the size of 150 µm × 150 µm and each pixel consists of four 12-bit energy windows. Two types of CdTe detectors have been bump bonded to the ASICs and have been tested.The electronic characteristics of the readout chip were evaluated first by injecting charge through the calibration capacitors. The non-uniformity of the energy thresholds among pixels was measured and then were compensated by tuning the local DACs.The detector performance was then characterized using X-ray tubes. The energy responses of the detectors were measured using the characteristic X-ray of the target materials. The global energy thresholds were then calibrated with these specific energies of photons. Polarization effects under different photon fluxes were also studied. Preliminary imaging was conducted. The detector response under uniform irradiation was investigated. The spatial uniformity of the detectors was analyzed and the flat field correction was then conducted to improve image quality. CT detailed test results will be discussed in this paper.

Synchrotron X-ray Radiation (SXR) in Medical Imaging: Current Status and Future Prospects

Synchrotron X-ray radiation (SXR) has been widely studied to explore the structure of matter. Recently, there has been an intense focus on the medical application of SXR in imaging. This review is intended to explore the latest applications of SXR in medical imaging and to shed light on the advantages and drawbacks of this modality. The article highlights the latest developments in other fields that can greatly enhance the capability and applicability of SXR. The potentials of using machine and deep learning (DL)-based methods to generate synthetic images to use in regular clinics along with the use of photon counting X-ray detectors for spectral medical imaging with SXR are also discussed.

IDeF-X HDBD: Low-Noise ASIC for Imaging Spectroscopy With Semiconductor Detectors in Space Science Applications

We present the IDeF-X HDBD integrated circuit, our latest 32-channel application specified integrated circuit devoted to semiconductor photon counting X-ray detectors, designed to read charges ranging from −40 to 40 fC. The chip reaches an equivalent noise charge (ENC) floor of 17 electrons rms and is optimized for low input capacitance (< 10 pF). Each channel is based on an optimized charge sensitive amplifier (CSA) followed by a CR-RC <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> filter and a peak detector with a power consumption of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$850 ~\mu \text{W}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> /channel. Gain and shaping times are tunable. This circuit has been designed with radiation mitigation techniques to meet space application requirements. This ASIC can read either cadmium telluride or silicon detectors for imaging-spectroscopy applications. An energy resolution of 230-eV FHWM at 6 keV and a low-level threshold of 1.2 keV were demonstrated with a single pixel silicon drift detector connected to one channel.

The detective quantum efficiency of cadmium telluride photon-counting x-ray detectors in breast imaging applications.

In breast imaging applications, cadmium telluride (CdTe) photon counting x-ray detectors (PCDs) may reduce radiation dose and enable single-shot multi-energy x-ray imaging. The purpose of this work is to determine the upper limits of the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of CdTe PCDs for x-ray mammography and to compare them with the published DQEs of energy-integrating detectors (EIDs) and other PCDs. We calibrated and validated a Monte Carlo (MC) model of the DQE of CdTe PCDs using an XCounter CdTe PCD. Our model accounted for charge sharing, electronic noise, and charge summation logic. We used a 28 kVp Mo/Mo spectrum hardened by 3.9cm of Lucite to optimize the detector thickness and energy threshold for pixel sizes of 50, 85, and 100 m with and without inter-pixel charge summation logic. The figure of merit used for optimization was the integral of the DQE, which is equivalent to the detectability index for a delta function task function, which represents a high-frequency task. For an electronic noise level equal to that of the XCounter, the optimal DQE(0) without charge summing was 0.74. Charge summing for charge-sharing correction reduced DQE(0) by 14% due to an increase in electronic noise. Reducing the electronic noise to ∼0.5keV per pixel in combination with charge summing resulted in DQE(0) 0.78 for 85 m pixels, which is approximately equal to that of a-Se and slot-scanning silicon-strip PCDs. At higher spatial frequencies, and for matched pixel sizes, the DQE was inferior to that of a-Se EIDs and superior to that of slot-scanning silicon-strip PCDs in the scan direction but inferior in the slit direction. (1) CdTe PCDs have the potential to provide a zero-frequency DQE equal to that of a-Se EIDs and slot-scanning silicon-strip PCDs, but this will require electronic noise levels ∼0.5keV per pixel. (2) At mid-to-high spatial frequencies the DQE of CdTe PCDs may be (a) inferior to that of a-Se EIDs and slot-scanning silicon-strip PCDs in the slit direction, and (b) superior to slot-scanning silicon-strip PCDs in the scan direction.

Advances in micro-CT imaging of small animals.

Micron-scale computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging is a ubiquitous, cost-effective, and non-invasive three-dimensional imaging modality. We review recent developments and applications of micro-CT for preclinical research. Based on a comprehensive review of recent micro-CT literature, we summarize features of state-of-the-art hardware and ongoing challenges and promising research directions in the field. Representative features of commercially available micro-CT scanners and some new applications for both in vivo and ex vivo imaging are described. New advancements include spectral scanning using dual-energy micro-CT based on energy-integrating detectors or a new generation of photon-counting x-ray detectors (PCDs). Beyond two-material discrimination, PCDs enable quantitative differentiation of intrinsic tissues from one or more extrinsic contrast agents. When these extrinsic contrast agents are incorporated into a nanoparticle platform (e.g. liposomes), novel micro-CT imaging applications are possible such as combined therapy and diagnostic imaging in the field of cancer theranostics. Another major area of research in micro-CT is in x-ray phase contrast (XPC) imaging. XPC imaging opens CT to many new imaging applications because phase changes are more sensitive to density variations in soft tissues than standard absorption imaging. We further review the impact of deep learning on micro-CT. We feature several recent works which have successfully applied deep learning to micro-CT data, and we outline several challenges specific to micro-CT.
