A general method for the development of diabatic spin-orbit models for multi-electron systems.

Spin-orbit (SO) coupling can have significant effects on the quantum dynamics of molecular systems, but it is still difficult to account for accurately. One promising way to do this is to devise a diabatic SO model combined with the molecular potential energy. Few such models have been developed utilizing spatial and time-reversal symmetry. These models are tedious to derive and are specific for the molecular symmetry and included spin states. Here, we present a relatively simple approach to construct such models for various spin states with S≠12 from a basic one-electron SO case with S=12. The multi-electron fine structure states are expressed in terms of Slater determinants of single-electron spin functions (spinors). The properties of all single-electron matrix elements over the SO operator are derived and expressed as Taylor expansions in terms of symmetry-adapted nuclear coordinates. The SO matrix elements for the multi-electron case are then obtained from these single-electron matrix elements using the Slater-Condon rules. This yields the full SO matrix and symmetry properties of the multi-electron matrix elements in a straightforward way. The matrix elements are expressed as symmetry-adapted polynomials up to arbitrary order. This approach is demonstrated first for an abstract model of two electrons in a set of p orbitals in a C3v symmetric environment and then applied to set up a diabatic model for the photodissociation of methyl iodide (CH3I). The high accuracy of this new approach is demonstrated in comparison to an available analytic SO model for CH3I.

Spectroscopic Signature of Chemical Bond Dissociation Revealed by Calculated Core-Electron Spectra.

The advent of ultrashort soft X-ray pulse sources permits the use of established gas-phase spectroscopy methods to investigate ultrafast photochemistry in isolated molecules with element and site specificity. In the present study, we simulate excited-state wavepacket dynamics of a prototypical process, the ultrafast photodissociation of methyl iodide. Using the simulation, we calculate time-dependent excited-state carbon edge photoelectron and Auger electron spectra. We observe distinct signatures in both types of spectra and show their direct connection to C-I bond dissociation and charge rearrangement processes in the molecule. We demonstrate at the CH3I molecule that the observed signatures allow us to map the time-dependent dynamics of ultrafast photoinduced bond breaking with unprecedented detail.

A combined multi-reference pump-probe simulation method with application to XUV signatures of ultrafast methyl iodide photodissociation.

UV pump-XUV/X-ray probe measurements have been successfully applied in the study of photo-induced chemical reactions. Although rich element-specific electronic structure information is accessible within XUV/X-ray (inner-shell) absorption spectra, it can be difficult to interpret the chemistry directly from the spectrum without supporting theoretical simulations. A multireference method to completely simulate UV pump-XUV/X-ray probe measurement has been developed and applied to study the methyl iodide photodissociation process. Multireference, fewest-switches surface hopping (FSSH) trajectories were used to explore the coupled electronic and ionic dynamics upon photoexcitation of methyl iodide. Interpretation of previous measurements is provided by associated multireference, restricted active space, inner-shell spectral simulations. This combination of multireference FSSH trajectories and XUV spectra provides an interpretation of transient features appearing in previous measurements within the first 100 fs after photoexcitation and validates the significant branching ratio in the final excited-state population. This methodology should prove useful for interpretation of the increasing number of inner-shell probe studies of molecular excited states or for directing new experiments toward interesting regions of the potential energy landscape.

Ab initio surface hopping excited-state molecular dynamics approach on the basis of spin-orbit coupled states: An application to the A-band photodissociation of CH3 I.

Ab initio molecular dynamics approach has been extended to multi-state dynamics on the basis of the spin-orbit coupled electronic states that are obtained through diagonalization of the spin-orbit coupling matrix with the multi-state second-order multireference perturbation theory energies in diagonal elements and the spin-orbit coupling terms at the state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field level in off-diagonal elements. Nonadiabatic transitions over the spin-orbit coupled states were taken into account explicitly by a surface hopping scheme with utilizing the nonadiabatic coupling terms calculated by numerical differentiation of the spin-orbit coupled wavefunctions and analytical nonadiabatic coupling terms. The present method was applied to the A-band photodissociation of methyl iodide, CH3 I + hv → CH3 + I (2 P3/2 )/I* (2 P1/2 ), for which a pioneering theoretical work was reported by Amatatsu, Yabushita, and Morokuma. The present results reproduced well the experimental branching ratio and energy distributions in the dissociative products. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A velocity-map imaging study of methyl non-resonant multiphoton ionization from the photodissociation of CH3I in the A-band.

Chemical reaction dynamics and, particularly, photodissociation in the gas phase are generally studied using pump-probe schemes where a first laser pulse induces the process under study and a second one detects the produced fragments. Providing an efficient detection of ro-vibrationally state-selected photofragments, the resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) technique is, without question, the most popular approach used for the probe step, while non-resonant multiphoton ionization (NRMPI) detection of the products is scarce. The main goal of this work is to test the sensitivity of the NRMPI technique to fragment vibrational distributions arising from molecular photodissociation processes. We revisit the well-known process of methyl iodide photodissociation in the A-band at around 280 nm, using the velocity-map imaging technique in conjunction with NRMPI of the methyl fragment. The detection wavelength, carefully selected to avoid any REMPI transition, was scanned between 325 and 335 nm seeking correlations between the different observables-the product vibrational, translational and angular distributions-and the excitation wavelength of the probe laser pulse. The experimental results have been discussed on the base of quantum dynamics calculations of photofragment vibrational populations carried out on available ab initio potential-energy surfaces using a four-dimensional model.This article is part of the themed issue 'Theoretical and computational studies of non-equilibrium and non-statistical dynamics in the gas phase, in the condensed phase and at interfaces'.

Photodissociation of Methyl Iodide via Selected Vibrational Levels of the B̃ ((2)E3/2)6s Rydberg State.

We have determined the I (2)P3/2 and (2)P1/2 branching fractions following the photodissociation of methyl iodide (CH3I) via a number of vibronic bands associated with the B̃ ((2)E3/2)6s Rydberg state at excitation wavelengths between 201.2 and 192.7 nm. Vacuum ultraviolet light at 118.2 nm was used to ionize both the product iodine atoms and the methyl radical cofragments, and velocity map ion imaging was used to determine the product translational energy distributions and angular distributions. The known relative photoionization cross sections for I (2)P3/2 and (2)P1/2 at 118.2 nm were used to determine the corresponding branching fractions. The results extend our earlier work at 193 nm by Xu et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 2013, 139, 214310), and complement the closely related work of González et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 2011, 135, 021102). We find that for most of the excited vibronic levels of the B̃ state studied, the I (2)P3/2 branching ratio is small, but nonzero, and that this channel is associated with internally excited CH3 radicals. The results are discussed in relation to the recent theoretical results of Alekseyev et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 2011, 134, 044303).

Semiclassical Wigner theory of photodissociation in three dimensions: Shedding light on its basis

The semiclassical Wigner theory (SCWT) of photodissociation dynamics, initially proposed by Brown and Heller [J. Chem. Phys. 75, 186 (1981)] in order to describe state distributions in the products of direct collinear photodissociations, was recently extended to realistic three-dimensional triatomic processes of the same type [Arbelo-González et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 15, 9994 (2013)]. The resulting approach, which takes into account rotational motions in addition to vibrational and translational ones, was applied to a triatomic-like model of methyl iodide photodissociation and its predictions were found to be in nearly quantitative agreement with rigorous quantum results, but at a much lower computational cost, making thereby SCWT a potential tool for the study of polyatomic reaction dynamics. Here, we analyse the main reasons for this agreement by means of an elementary model of fragmentation explicitly dealing with the rotational motion only. We show that our formulation of SCWT makes it a semiclassical approximation to an approximate planar quantum treatment of the dynamics, both of sufficient quality for the whole treatment to be satisfying.

New insights into the photodissociation of methyl iodide at 193 nm: stereodynamics and product branching ratios.

The stereodynamics of methyl iodide photodissociation after excitation at 193 nm has been studied using a combination of slice imaging and resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) detection of the methyl and iodine products. A weak anisotropic ring appearing in the image corresponding to vibrationally excited CH3(ν1 = 1) confirms the production of ground state I((2)P3/2) atoms at this excitation wavelength as a signature of the predissociation channel reported previously [M. G. González et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2011, 135, 021102] tentatively assigned to the coupling between the B-band (3)R1 Rydberg state and the A-band (1)Q1 repulsive state. Direct REMPI detection of ground state iodine atoms indicates that most of the I((2)P3/2) species are produced in correlation with highly internally excited methyl radicals, in excellent agreement with the recent results of Xu and Pratt [Xu et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2013, 139, 214310; Xu et al., J. Phys. Chem. A, 2015, 119, 7548]. From the comparison between the CH3(ν) second order Dixon's bipolar moments β(2)(0)(20), β(0)(0)(22), β(2)(0)(02) and β(2)(0)(22) measured in this work and those reported previously for the B-band origin and the A-band, a general picture of the CH3I photodissociation stereodynamics in terms of different effects, such as the breakdown of the unique recoil direction (URD) approximation, the non-adiabatic curve crossings and the depolarization induced by the parent molecule rotation, is drawn.

Dynamics of the A-band ultraviolet photodissociation of methyl iodide and ethyl iodide via velocity-map imaging with 'universal' detection.

We report data from a comprehensive investigation into the photodissociation dynamics of methyl iodide and ethyl iodide at several wavelengths in the range 236-266 nm, within their respective A-bands. The use of non-resonant single-photon ionization at 118.2 nm allows detection and velocity-map imaging of all fragments, regardless of their vibrotational or electronic state. The resulting photofragment kinetic energy and angular distributions and the quantum yields of ground-state and spin-orbit excited iodine fragments are in good agreement with previous studies employing state-selective detection via REMPI. The data are readily rationalised in terms of three competing dissociation mechanisms. The dominant excitation at all wavelengths studied is via a parallel transition to the (3)Q0 state, which either dissociates directly to give an alkyl radical partnered by spin-orbit excited iodine, or undergoes radiationless transfer to the (1)Q1 potential surface, where it dissociates to an alkyl radical partnered by iodine in its electronic ground state. Ground state iodine atoms can also be formed by direct dissociation from the (1)Q1 or (3)Q1 excited states following perpendicular excitation at the shorter and longer wavelength region, respectively, in the current range of interest. The extent of internal excitation of the alkyl fragment varies with dissociation mechanism, and is considerably higher for ethyl fragments from ethyl iodide photolysis than for methyl fragments from methyl iodide photolysis. We discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of single-photon vacuum-ultraviolet ionization relative to the more widely used REMPI detection schemes, and conclude, in agreement with others, that single-photon ionization is a viable detection method for photofragment imaging studies, particularly when studying large molecules possessing multiple fragmentation channels.

Imaging the stereodynamics of methyl iodide photodissociation in the second absorption band: fragment polarization and the interplay between direct and predissociation.

The stereochemistry of methyl iodide photodissociation in the onset of the second absorption B-band has been studied using slice imaging of the CH3(ν = 0) and I*((2)P1/2) photoproducts. The stereodynamical data have been crucial to disentangle the photochemistry of methyl iodide in terms of the competition between direct dissociation and electronic predissociation. The origin of the B-band has been established with high accuracy at 201.11 ± 0.12 nm and a depolarization factor due to parent molecule rotation during predissociation has been found to be 0.29 ± 0.06. Analysis of the semiclassical Dixon's bipolar moments extracted from the CH3(ν = 0) sliced images indicates that direct excitation to the A-band (3)A1 repulsive state in the vicinity of the origin of the B-band is remarkably enhanced by vibrational coupling between the electronic states involved at the conical intersection through in-plane vibrational motion of the molecule.

A new look at the photodissociation of methyl iodide at 193 nm

A new measurement of the photodissociation of CH3I at 193 nm is reported in which we use a combination of vacuum ultraviolet photoionization and velocity map ion imaging. The iodine photofragments are probed by single-photon ionization at photon energies above and below the photoionization threshold of I((2)P(3/2)). The relative I((2)P(3/2)) and I*((2)P(1/2)) photoionization cross sections are determined at these wavelengths by using the known branching fractions for the photodissociation at 266 nm. Velocity map ion images indicate that the branching fraction for I((2)P(3/2)) atoms is non-zero, and yield a value of 0.07 ± 0.01. Interestingly, the translational energy distribution extracted from the image shows that the translational energy of the I((2)P(3/2)) fragments is significantly smaller than that of the I*((2)P(1/2)) atoms. This observation indicates the internal rotational/vibrational energy of the CH3 co-fragment is very high in the I((2)P(3/2)) channel. The results can be interpreted in a manner consistent with the previous measurements, and provide a more complete picture of the dissociation dynamics of this prototypical molecule.

Wave packet study of the methyl iodide photodissociation dynamics in the 266−333 nm wavelength range

Photolysis of CH3I is studied in the range of excitation wavelengths λ = 266−333 nm using a three-dimensional wave packet method. The aim is to try to clarify some discrepancies arisen in different experiments for the vibrational distributions of the CH3 (ν 2) fragment (being ν 2 the umbrella bend mode or the symmetric deformation mode of the CH3 group) produced through the channel CH3 (ν 2) + I(2P3/2). The simulations predict non-statistical vibrational distributions peaking at ν 2 = 1 in the range λ = 266−315 nm, and a change to statistical behavior with a maximum at ν 2 = 0 for longer wavelengths. The calculations agree qualitatively with all the available experiments for λ = 266−280 nm. For λ ≥ 298 nm theory is consistent with one of the experiments and disagrees with the other two.

Photodissociation of Methyl Iodide and Methyl Iodide Clusters at 193 nm

This study introduces the state resolved dynamics of CH3I when clustered in a supersonic expansion using He and Xe as seeding gases. Following excitation at 193 nm (6.4 eV), state specific alterations in photodissociation dynamics are observed. Four vibrational levels (ν2 = 0, 1, 2, 3) of the CH3 umbrella vibrational mode were probed, as were I(2P3/2) and I(2P1/2) atomic photofragments. For nascent CH3 fragments the measured kinetic energy releases and angular distributions show enormous sensitivity to the clustering. Manifestation of the clustering dynamics include: (a) shifting to higher energies (by up to 0.5 eV) and significant broadening of the kinetic energy distribution; (b) vibrational dependence of this increase in product kinetic energy; (c) angular distribution changes from a characteristic perpendicular character observed in free-standing CH3I into a parallel transition for the clustered moiety. Photodissociation of methyl iodide adsorbed on low-temperature amorphous ice surfaces

Photodissociation dynamics of methyl iodide (CH3I) adsorbed on both amorphous solid water (ASW) and porous amorphous solid water (PASW) has been investigated. The ejected ground-state I((2)P3∕2) and excited-state I((2)P1∕2) photofragments produced by 260- and 290-nm photons were detected using laser resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization. In contrast to gas-phase photodissociation, (i) the I((2)P3∕2) photofragment is favored compared to I((2)P1∕2) at both wavelengths, (ii) I((2)P3∕2) and I((2)P1∕2) have velocity distributions that depend upon ice morphology, and (iii) I2 is produced on ASW. The total iodine [I((2)P3∕2)+I((2)P1∕2)+I2] yield varies with substrate morphology, with greater yield from ASW than PASW using both 260- and 290-nm photons. Temperature-programmed desorption studies demonstrate that ice porosity enhances the trapping of adsorbed CH3I, while pore-free ice likely allows monomer adsorption and the formation of two-dimensional CH3I clusters. Reactions or collisions involving these clusters, I atomic fragments, or I-containing molecular fragments at the vacuum-surface interface can result in I2 formation.

New insights into the semiclassical Wigner treatment of photodissociation dynamics

The semiclassical Wigner treatment of Brown and Heller [J. Chem. Phys. 1981, 75, 186] is applied to direct triatomic (or triatomic-like polyatomic) photodissociations with the aim of accurately predicting final state distributions at relatively low computational cost, and having available a powerful interpretative tool. For the first time, the treatment takes rotational motions into account. The proposed formulation closely parallels the quantum description as far as possible. An approximate version is proposed, which is still accurate while numerically much more efficient. In addition to being weighted by usual vibrational Wigner distributions, final phase space states appear to be weighted by new rotational Wigner distributions. These densities have remarkable structures clearly showing that classical trajectories most contributing to rotational state j are those reaching the products with a rotational angular momentum close to [j(j + 1)](1/2) (in ℏ units). The previous methods involve running trajectories from the reagent molecule onto the products. The alternative backward approach [L. Bonnet, J. Chem. Phys., 2010, 133, 174108], in which trajectories are run in the reverse direction, is shown to strongly improve the numerical efficiency of the most rigorous method in addition to being state-selective, and thus, ideally suited to the description of state-correlated distributions measured in velocity imaging experiments. The results obtained by means of the previous methods are compared with rigorous quantum results in the case of Guo's triatomic-like model of methyl iodide photodissociation [J. Chem. Phys., 1992, 96, 6629] and close agreement is found. In comparison, the standard method of Goursaud et al. [J. Chem. Phys., 1976, 65, 5453] is only semi-quantitative.

Photodissociation of methyl iodide embedded in a host-guest complex: A full dimensional (189D) quantum dynamics study of CH3I@resorc[4]arene

Accurate full dimensional quantum dynamics calculations studying the photodissociation of CH(3)I@resorc[4]arene on an ab initio based potential energy surface (PES) model are reported. The converged 189D quantum dynamics calculations are facilitated by the multilayer multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) approach combined with the correlation discrete variable representation (CDVR) for the evaluation of potential energy matrix elements. The potential employed combines an established ab initio PES describing the photodissociation of methyl iodide in the A band with a harmonic description of the resorc[4]arene host and a bilinear modeling of the host-guest interaction. All potential parameters required in the description of the vibrations of the host molecule and the host-guest interaction are derived from ab initio calculations on the host-guest complex. Absorption spectra at 0 K and 300 K are calculated and the electronic population dynamics during the bond breaking process occurring in the first 20-30 fs after the photoexcitation is investigated. Weak but significant effects resulting from the host-guest interaction on this time scale are found and interpreted. The present study demonstrates that accurate fully quantum mechanical dynamics calculations can be preformed for systems consisting of more than 50 atoms using the ML-MCTDH/CDVR approach. Utilizing an efficient statistical approach for the construction of the ensemble of initial wavepackets, these calculations are not restricted to zero temperature but can also study the dynamics at 300 K.

Photodissociation of CH3I: A Full-Dimensional (9D) Quantum Dynamics Study

The photodissociation of methyl iodide in the A band is studied by full-dimensional (9D) wave packet dynamics calculations using the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree approach. The potential energy surfaces employed are based on the diabatic potentials of Xie et al. [J. Phys. Chem. A 2000, 104, 1009] and the vertical excitation energy is taken from recent ab initio calculations [Alekseyev et al. J. Chem. Phys.2007, 126, 234102]. The absorption spectrum calculated for exclusively parallel excitation agrees well with the experimental spectrum of the A band. The electronic population dynamics is found to be strongly dependent on the motion in the torsional coordinate related to the H(3)-C-I bend, which presumably is an artifact of the diabatic model employed. The calculated fully product state-selected partial spectra can be interpreted based on the reflection principle and suggests strong coupling between the C-I stretching and the H(3)-C-I bending motions during the dissociation process. The computed rotational and vibrational product distributions typically reproduce the trends seen in the experiment. In agreement with experiment, a small but significant excitation of the total symmetric stretching and the asymmetric bending modes of the methyl fragment can be seen. In contrast, the umbrella mode of the methyl is found to be too highly excited in the calculated distributions.

Photoinduced quantum dynamics in molecules and at adsorbates

A problem of long-standing scientific interest is the interaction of electromagnetic fields with atomic and molecular species both in isolation and within a medium, and the ensuing spectroscopy and chemical dynamics. This paper presents an overview of theoretical and computational methods, both fully quantum mechanical or semi-classical in nature, developed over many years at the Quantum Theory Project of the University of Florida for dealing with photo-induced processes such as molecular dissociation or desorption of adsorbates from metal surfaces. In the former case, photoinduced transition rates are computed from transition operators via eikonal functions, or more generally with a time correlation function in which the radiation and material degrees of freedom are treated separately. Application to the photodissociation of methyl iodide is outlined. For molecular photodesorption, the system is partitioned into two self-consistently coupled regions, and a density matrix formalism in Liouville space is employed to study its time evolution in the general case when the substrate is also photoexcited. Pulsed laser irradiation of the substrate, described by optical Bloch and kinetic rate equations, results in electronic to vibrational energy transfer from metal to adsorbate and subsequent photodesorption. The theory has been applied to the CO/Cu(001) system to calculate desoprtion yields. Also treated is the optical control of yields via chirping effects, which has been predicted to both suppress or enhance the amount of CO leaving the surface.

The photodissociation of CH3I in the red edge of the A-band: Comparison between slice imaging experiments and multisurface wave packet calculations

The photodissociation of methyl iodide at different wavelengths in the red edge of the A-band (286-333 nm) has been studied using a combination of slice imaging and resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization detection of the methyl fragment in the vibrational ground state (nu=0). The kinetic energy distributions (KED) of the produced CH(3)(nu=0) fragments show a vibrational structure, both in the I((2)P(3/2)) and I( *)((2)P(1/2)) channels, due to the contribution to the overall process of initial vibrational excitation in the nu(3)(C-I) mode of the parent CH(3)I. The structures observed in the KEDs shift toward upper vibrational excited levels of CH(3)I when the photolysis wavelength is increased. The I((2)P(3/2))/I( *)((2)P(1/2)) branching ratios, photofragment anisotropies, and the contribution of vibrational excitation of the parent CH(3)I are explained in terms of the contribution of the three excited surfaces involved in the photodissociation process, (3)Q(0), (1)Q(1), and (3)Q(1), as well as the probability of nonadiabatic curve crossing (1)Q(1)<--(3)Q(0). The experimental results are compared with multisurface wave packet calculations carried out using the available ab initio potential energy surfaces, transition moments, and nonadiabatic couplings, employing a reduced dimensionality (pseudotriatomic) model. A general qualitative good agreement has been found between theory and experiment, the most important discrepancies being in the I((2)P(3/2))/[I((2)P(3/2))+I( *)((2)P(1/2))] branching ratios. Inaccuracies of the available potential energy surfaces are the main reason for the discrepancies.
