Efficient Recovery of Phosphate from Water Media by Iron-Magnesium Functionalized Lignite: Adsorption Evaluation, Mechanism Revelation and Potential Application Exploration.

Selective phosphorus removal from aquatic media has become an ideal strategy to mitigate eutrophication and meet increasingly stringent discharge requirements. To achieve phosphorus control and resource utilization of low-calorific-value lignite, iron and magnesium salts were used to functionalize lignite, and iron-magnesium functionalized lignite (called IM@BC) was prepared for phosphate recovery from water media. The adsorption properties of IM@BC were systematically evaluated, especially the influence of ambient pH and co-existing ions. The kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic adsorption behaviors of IM@BC were analyzed. The adsorption mechanism was revealed by microscopic characterization. The potential application of phosphate-containing IM@BC (P-IM@BC) was explored. The results show that IM@BC has a strong phosphate adsorption capacity, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 226.22 mgP/g at pH = 3. Co-existing CO32- inhibits phosphate adsorption, while coexisting Ca2+ and Mg2+ enhance the effect. At the initial adsorption stage, the amount of phosphate adsorbed by IM@BC continues to increase, and the adsorption equilibrium state is gradually reached after 24 h. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (PSO) and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, and the adsorption process is mainly chemical adsorption. The phosphate absorption capacity is positively correlated with temperature (283.15 K~313.15 K), and the adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-increasing. Its adsorption mechanism includes electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface precipitation, and coordination exchange. IM@BC can efficiently recover phosphate from actual phosphorus-containing wastewater with a recovery efficiency of up to 90%. P-IM@BC slowly releases phosphate from pH 3 to 11. Plant growth experiments showed that P-IM@BC could be used as a slow-release fertilizer to promote the root growth of cowpeas. The novelty of this work lies in the development of a highly efficient phosphate recovery adsorbent, which provides a feasible method of phosphorus control in water media and resource utilization of lignite.

Synthesis and Characterization of 2D Magnesium Oxide Nanoflakes: A Potential Nanomaterial for Effective Phosphate Removal from Wastewater

AbstractPhosphate containing untreated wastewater, discharged into water bodies, can cause eutrophication, leading to harmful effects on the ecosystem and human health. This study focuses on a simple, low‐cost, and novel approach towards removing excess phosphate ions from aqueous solutions by adsorbing on onto two‐dimensional (2‐D) magnesium oxide nano‐flakes (MONFs). The phosphate removal efficiency was tested with different concentrations of phosphate solutions (2–25 mg L−1), pH levels (3–11), adsorbent dosages (0.025‐0.250 g), and contact times (10‐50 min). The maximum phosphate removal percentage of 100 % was obtained with 50.0 mL of 3 mg L−1 phosphate solution using 0.125 g of the synthesized MONFs with a phosphate absorption capacity of 29.9 mg g−1. Moreover, the adsorption data fit with the Freundlich isotherm, with an R2 value of 0.952. The adsorption kinetic data follow the pseudo‐second‐order model, with an R2 value of 0.995, suggesting that the adsorption process is chemisorption.

Improved holding and releasing capacities of coal gangue toward phosphate through alkali-activation

Activation is an effective method to improve adsorption capacity of coal gangue, however, most activated gangues reported have limited adsorption capacity for phosphate because of the electronegativity, affecting their use in agricultural production and environmental protection. In order to enhance the phosphate absorption capacity of coal gangue through alkali-activation, three alkali-activated silicate coal gangue according to fine-size (AS-FCG1), medium-size (AS-MCG2), and large-size (AS-LCG3) were prepared through grinding, calcining (800 °C) and stimulating with Ca(OH)2 solution (0.1 M), and raw coal gangue (RCG4) was used as control. The results revealed that AS-FCG has the best modified effects, its maximum phosphate adsorption capacity, according to Langmuir model, was 11.796 mg g−1, which was 4.41, 8.16 and 73.73 times higher than that of AS-MCG, AS-LCG and RCG, respectively. The adsorption penetration time of AS-FCG packed column was over 30 h, which was longer than that of other samples. Besides, when the AS-FCG packed column loaded with phosphate was desorbed with distilled water, the phosphate concentration of filtrate was low and rapidly tended to 0 mg L−1, while when it was desorbed with NaHCO3 solution, the concentration remained high sustainably. The best adsorption performance of AS-FCG were associated with generation of calcium silicate hydrate gel and ettringite, which provided more Ca2+, Al3+, hydroxyl and larger specific surface area. It is suggested that alkali-activation is able to truly realize the recycling of solid waste, AS-FCG is an inexpensive, durable and eco-friendly material, which could not only be used to hold phosphate, but also release it slowly as fertilizer.

Radiocesium interception potential of agricultural soils in northeast Japan

ABSTRACTThe health risks associated with the long-term intake of radiocesium from food have been of great concern since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident in 2011. Therefore, evaluating the phytoavailability and mobility of radiocesium in soil and determining the ability of soil to fix radiocesium are important research topics. The capacity and selectivity for 137Cs sorption in soil is evaluated on the basis of the radiocesium interception potential (RIP). Here, we measured the RIP of 925 farmland soil samples collected from Fukushima Prefecture and surrounding regions and plotted the values on a soil classification map and a surface geological map. The RIP values ranged from 73 to 12700 mmol kg−1, and a wide range was also observed among samples with identical soil types and geological features; however, the RIP values were significantly low for Andosols (P ≤ 0.05). In addition, soils that did not contain vermiculite, illite and smectite had low RIP values. All measured RIP values were negatively correlated with the total C content and phosphate absorption capacity and positively correlated with the clay, silt, and exchangeable K and Ca content (P ≤ 0.01). However, the relationship between the RIP and the measured soil properties, except for the exchangeable K content, is strongly dependent on the soil classification and clay mineral composition. Therefore, the soil properties that most significantly influence the RIP values are probably differences in the soil parent materials, which influence the soil classification and clay mineral composition.

Experimental and regional variations in Na+-dependent and Na+-independent phosphate transport along the rat small intestine and colon.

Despite the importance of extracellular phosphate in many essential biological processes, the mechanisms of phosphate transport across the epithelium of different intestinal segments remain unclear. We have used an in vitro method to investigate phosphate transport at the brush border membrane (BBM) of intact intestinal segments and an in vivo method to study transepithelial phosphate absorption. We have used micromolar phosphate concentrations known to favor NaPi‐IIb‐mediated transport, and millimolar concentrations that are representative of the levels we have measured in luminal contents, to compare the extent of Na+‐dependent and Na+‐independent phosphate transport along the rat duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and proximal and distal colon. Our findings confirm that overall the jejunum is the main site of phosphate absorption; however, at millimolar concentrations, absorption shows ~30% Na+‐dependency, suggesting that transport is unlikely to be mediated exclusively by the Na+‐dependent NaPi‐IIb co‐transporter. In the ileum, studies in vitro confirmed that relatively low levels of phosphate transport occur at the BBM of this segment, although significant Na+‐dependent transport was detected using millimolar levels of phosphate in vivo. Since NaPi‐IIb protein is not detectable at the rat ileal BBM, our data suggest the presence of an as yet unidentified Na+‐dependent uptake pathway in this intestinal segment in vivo. In addition, we have confirmed that the colon has a significant capacity for phosphate absorption. Overall, this study highlights the complexities of intestinal phosphate absorption that can be revealed using different phosphate concentrations and experimental techniques.

Selective adsorption behavior of phosphate onto aluminum hydroxide gel

The specific surface area and X-ray diffraction patterns for an aluminum hydroxide gel (AHG) calcined at 300–1150 °C, the number of surface hydroxyl groups in the AHG, and the adsorption isotherms of phosphate on AHG were measured in order to develop a phosphate recovery agent. AHG was transformed into γ- and α-alumina by the calcinations treatment. The amount of phosphate adsorbed onto AHG increases at calcining temperatures of 300–700 °C and decreases above a calcining temperature of 800 °C. It was found that AHG selectively adsorbs phosphate ions, but not other anions, and shows the highest adsorption capacity at pH 4–6. Further, the alkali resistance of AHG increased with calcination, and more than 80% of the phosphate adsorbed with an NaOH aqueous solution underwent desorption. The addition of colloidal alumina and colloidal silica resulted in the formation of granules of 500–840 μm size. The amount of phosphate adsorbed onto AHG after granulation was similar to that before granulation. Thus, the phosphate absorption capacity of AHG did not decrease after granulation suggesting that AHG can be used as a phosphate adsorbent.

Soil quality relationships with tree growth in exotic forests in New Zealand

Quantitative information on the relationships between site quality and plantation productivity (dominated by the exotic species Pinus radiata) is required to achieve goals for sustainable forest production. Soil quality is a key component of site quality. A nationwide study of soil quality measurements is reported for 35 representative forest sites, covering a wide range of climatic and edaphic conditions found throughout New Zealand's plantation forest estate, representing most of the soils used for plantation forestry in New Zealand. The objectives of the study were to find the most important soil properties that discriminated among eight New Zealand Soil Orders and determine relationships between Soil Orders and early tree growth rates for P. radiata and Cupressus lusitanica. Soil physical and chemical properties were measured to identify key soil indicators of soil quality related to tree productivity. Tree growth was measured after four years on small plots planted at very high stand density (40 000 stems ha −1). A factorial design was used to examine the influence of three factors on tree productivity: two species, P. radiata D. Don (ectomycorrhizal) and C. lusitanica Miller (endomycorrhizal); with and without fertilizer; and low or high disturbance (soil compaction and/or topsoil scalping by machinery). Carbon content, Phosphorus (P) retention, and soil physical properties that index the degree of soil compactness were strongly correlated to Soil Order. These properties are similar to soil quality factors that correlated with tree growth. Discriminant analyses of soil quality parameters by Soil Order clustered soils based on P retention (phosphate absorption capacity), subsoil Carbon (C), and subsoil air capacity (volume % of voids at 10 kPa matric potential). Allophanic Soils and Podzols clustered (from plots of first versus second canonical variates) separately from the other Soil Orders, which were somewhat clustered on the second variate within a broad clustering on the first variate. Soil Orders were ranked for tree growth rates for both species: pumice Andisols > Inceptisols > tephric Andisols > Entisols > Ultisols > Spodosols (NZ classification: for P. radiata is Pumice > Brown > Pallic > Allophanic > Recent > Raw > Ultic > Podzol and for C. lusitanica Pumice > Pallic > Allophanic > Brown > Raw > Ultic > Recent > Podzol).

Effects of vanadate on the ATP content, ATPase activity and phosphate absorption capacity of maize roots

Although the sensitivity of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase to vanadate is well known, the metabolic response of plant cells to vanadate is less well characterised in vivo and its use as an inhibitor in whole plant experiments has had mixed success. Experiments with maize (Zea mays, L.) roots and with purified plasma membrane fractions from the same tissues showed that exposure to vanadate caused: (i) a reduction in the capacity for phosphate uptake; (ii) a reduction in the extractable ATPase activity from the tissue; and (iii) a significant increase in the ATP level. The measurements on the extractable ATPase activity and the ATP level showed that the effect of vanadate developed slowly, apparently reflecting the slow accumulation of intracellular vanadate. The marked effect of vanadate on the ATP level-exposure to 500 μM vanadate for 5 h doubled the ATP content of the roots tips-indicates that there is no stringent control over the ATP level in the roots and that the plasma membrane H+-ATPase activity is likely to have a significant role in determining the ATP level under normal conditions.

Nutrient uptake in eastern deciduous tree seedlings

Tree seedlings that colonize large treefall gaps are generally shade-intolerant species with high potential relative growth rates. Nutrient availability may be significantly elevated in disturbance-induced gaps, however, little is known about the role of differences in nutrient uptake capacities of different species in structuring the community response to gap openings in eastern North American deciduous forests. Seven tree species were grown from seed under both a high and a low nutrient regime, and uptake kinetics of phosphate, ammonium, and nitrate were studied. Yellow birch, a species with intermediate shade tolerance and relative growth rate, had the highest maximum rates of uptake of all ions, while tulip tree, a gap-colonizing species with high relative growth rate, had the lowest rate of phosphate uptake and intermediate rates of ammonium and nitrate uptake. Beech and hickory, which have low relative growth rates and are not gap-colonizing species, had intermediate levels of nutrient uptake. There was no evidence that species with the highest maximum uptake rates measured at high supply concentrations had relatively low uptake at low nutrient supply concentrations. Although birch increased phosphate absorption capacity when grown under a low nutrient regime, this pattern did not hold for nitrate or ammonium uptake, and other species showed no change in nutrient uptake capacity according to nutrient growth regime. Clearly, factors other than nutrient absorption capacity, such as nutrient use efficiency or allocation to root vs. shoot biomass, underlie differences in species' capacities to colonize and maintain a high relative growth rate in canopy gaps.

Lack of compensatory growth under phosphorus deficiency in grazing-adapted grasses from the Serengeti Plains.

Two shortgrass species (Sporobolus ioclados and Eustachys paspaloides) and two midgrass species (E. paspaloides and Pennisetum mezianum) from the Serengeti grasslands of Tanzania were grown under conditions of extreme phosphorus (P) deficiency. Production of each of these species is maintained or enhanced by defoliation under adequate nutrient supply (McNaughton et al. 1983). However, under the P-deficient conditions of our experiment, defoliation caused a reduction in biomass of all plant parts of each species. Green leaf biomass was reduced most strongly by defoliation, and crowns were least affected. Yield of biomass and nutrients to grazers (green leaves+clipped material) was enhanced by weekly defoliation in the shortgrass grazing-adapted species, whereas yield to producers (live biomass and nutrients retained by the plant) and yield to decomposers (litter) were strongly reduced by defoliation in all species. Phosphate absorption capacity (V max) measured on excised roots was enhanced by defoliation in the grazing-adapted Sporobolus, but, due to low affinity (high K m) of roots of defoliated plants for phosphate, absorption rate was not greatly altered at low solution concentrations. Phosphate absorption capacity was reduced or unaffected by defoliation in other species. We conclude that under conditions of P deficiency, plants are unable to acquire the nutrients necessary to replenish large nutrient losses to grazers. In low-nutrient environments, compensatory growth (stimulation of production by grazing) is not a viable strategy. Therefore, in these environments plants respond evolutionarily to herbivores by developing chemical or morphological defenses.

The role of mosses in the phosphorus cycling of an Alaskan black spruce forest.

Mosses account for 75% of the annual phosphorus accumulation in aboveground parts of an Alaskan black spruce forest, although they comprise only 17% of the phosphorus pool in aboveground vegetation. Sphagnum subsecundum and feathermosses (Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi) have a higher capacity to absorb phosphate than do the fine roots of black spruce (Picea mariana) that are situated beneath the moss layer. In three of the four moss species studied, phosphate absorption capacity increases with increasing age of green tissue and decreases with increasing age of brown tissue. In the two feathermosses, which acquire moisture primarily from the air, and in Sphagnum, phosphate absorption is more rapid in green than in brown tissue. In contrast, the endohydric moss Polytrichum commune, which transports water through stem tissue from soil, absorbs phosphate most rapidly from stems in mineral soil. Two treatments designed to reduce activity of mycorrhizae (cutting of roots extending beneath the moss carpet or application to the moss surface of a fungicide that kills mycorrhizal hyphae) tended to increase phosphate retention by mosses and reduce phosphate transfer out of the experimental plots. This suggests that mycorrhizae are an important avenue of phosphorus movement out of the moss carpet and a means by which the black spruce competes with the overlying mosses for nutrients.

Phosphate Absorption: Adaptation of Tundra Graminoids to a Low Temperature, Low Phosphorus Environment

Seasonal changes in phosphate absorption rate were examined in three tundra graminoids growing under natural field conditions and in experimentally heated soils in the field at Barrow, Alaska. Although tundra plants exhibited a high optimum temperature for phosphate absorption similar to that of temperate plants, rates were relatively insensitive to short-term temperature change, suggesting that tundra plants routinely absorb phosphate from cold soil and do not depend upon daily or seasonal increases in soil temperature for phosphate acquisition. Variation in the calculated seasonal course of phosphate absorption resulted more from change in phosphate availability and phosphate status than from temperature acclimation. Absorption capacity was highest early in the growing season when root growth began and then decreased to a level which was maintained well into September, long after aboveground plant parts had senesced. Nearly half of the phosphate acquired by the plants investigated was probably acquired after shoots had begun a net translocation of nutrients belowground for winter storage. Plants acclimatized to a warm, anaerobic, nitrogenrich soil had a higher capacity for phosphate absorption but a lower affinity for phosphate than did control plants growing in cold soil. The applicability of laboratory-derived concepts of nutrient absorption to the seasonal dynamics of these processes in the field is discussed.

Phosphate Absorption Capacity and Acclimation Potential in Plants along a Latitudinal Gradient

The capacity for phosphate absorption by marsh plants is negatively correlated with the soil temperature of the habitat of origin. Species and races from thermally fluctuating environments achieve greater compensatory changes in the phosphate absorption rate through temperature acclimation than their counterparts from more stable environments.

The influence of microbial contamination of fresh and washed beetroot disks on their capacity to absorb phosphate

When plant storage tissue is cut into thin disks it rapidly develops a high capacity to absorb phosphate from dilute solutions. The recent trend has been to attribute the development of this ability to the increased metabolic activity of bacteria known to be containing the tissue. Data presented in this paper shows that bacterial contamination of the tissue does contribute to the apparent uptake of phosphate by the disks. However, during the ageing process the number of bacteria decrease and therefore contribute less to the total uptake in the aged tissue. If the tissue is prepared and maintained in a sterile condition it is still able to develop a high capacity for phosphate absorption during ageing.
