Catalysts for Liquid-Phase Oxidation of Organic Compounds by Hydrogen Peroxide: Homogeneous and Phase-Transfer Systems

The review presents a comparative analysis of promising homogeneous metal complex catalysts and presents the results of studies on the synthesis and determination of the structural characteristics of effective catalysts for the oxidation of organic compounds with hydrogen peroxide – Q3{PO4[WO(O2)2]4} (Q is a quaternary ammonium cation) – using methods EXAFS, SAXS, NMR, Raman and IR spectroscopy. The possibilities of using bifunctional homogeneous peroxopolyoxo complexes of metals in combination with organic cations having quaternized nitrogen under the conditions of interfacial catalysis are considered, using examples of reactions of oxidation of various classes of organic compounds with hydrogen peroxide to obtain popular products – aliphatic and aromatic epoxides, mono- and dicarboxylic acids, as well as biologically active compounds for medical and agro-industrial purposes.

Synthesis of heteroaromatic N-β-glycosides of N-acetylglucosamine under the conditions of phase transfer catalysis: I. Glucosaminides of 2-oxobenzazoles

Glycosylation of methylbenzoxazolone-2 and benzothiazolone-2 with the full acetate of alpha-D-glucosaminyl chloride in the phase transfer systems investigated (solid-organic solvent and aqueous alkali-organic solvent) regioselectively leads to the corresponding N-beta-D-glucosaminides, which is proved by 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis.

Influence of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers on stereoselective catalysis in water

The first application of (EO)n-(PO)m-(EO)n triblock copolymers as surfactants in asymmetric hydrogenation is described. We observed a dependence of the activity and enantioselectivity on the asymmetric hydrogenation of methyl (Z)-α-acetamidocinnamate on the length of the (PO)m domain of the copolymer. The activity and enantioselectivity were observed to be independent of the hydrophilic-lipophilic-balance (HLB) or the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the copolymer. The size of the (EO)n unit does not play an important role, however the addition of a small amount of SDS enhances the enantioselectivities significantly. The triblock copolymers were also successfully used as phase transfer reagent in two-phase Suzuki carbon-carbon coupling reactions. The use of polymeric reagents in micellar and phase-transfer systems has the advantage that these reagents can be easily separated from the reaction mixture by means of a membrane.

Preparation and chemical reactions of some polymer-supported steroids

Steroidal acids and alcohols were satisfactorily bound via ester linkages to functionalised polystyrenes, and subsequently were satisfactorily detached. Best loadings were achieved by reacting polymers with acid chloride residues with steroidal alcohols in refluxing ethylbenzene. However, there appears to be a loading limit in this system corresponding to about 2.5 polymer repeat units per steroid molecule. Ketone groups in bound steroids were reduced using sodium borohydride in various solvents or aqueous potassium borohydride in phase transfer systems. The proportions of the epimeric alcohols obtained were compared with those obtained from low molecular weight analogues. The polymer appears to have very little effect on the proportions obtained, except when aqueous reagents are used and the polymer is macroporous. Olefinic groups in bound steroids were epoxidized or hydrogenated.

Metal Carbonyls in Phase Transfer Catalysis

AbstractThis review is limited to phase transfer systems (solid—liquid and liquid—liquid) involving metal carbonyls. The principles of phase transfer catalysis, related to metal carbonyl properties which play a key role in these two‐phase systems, are first briefly recalled. Then, in the light of these principles, applications to inorganic chemistry (ligand exchange, preparation of metal carbonyl anions), organometallic chemistry (synthesis of π allyl complexes, clusters, orthometalated compounds, acylmetal carbonyls, complexed ylids), and finally to organic chemistry are comprehensively reviewed. In this last part, both stoichiometric and catalytic systems (with respect to the metal carbonyl) are reviewed essentially in the fields of functional reduction and carbonylation.
