Ultrafast temporal phase-resolved nonlinear optical spectroscopy in the molecular frame

In an ultrafast nonlinear optical interaction, the electric field of the emitted nonlinear signal provides direct access to the induced nonlinear transient polarization or transient currents and thus carries signatures of ultrafast dynamics in a medium. Measurement of the electric field of such signals offers sensitive observables to track ultrafast electron dynamics in various systems. In this work, we resolve the real-time phase of the electric field of a femtosecond third-order nonlinear optical signal in the molecular frame. The electric field emitted from impulsively pre-aligned gas-phase molecules at room temperature, in a degenerate four-wave mixing scheme, is measured using a spectral interferometry technique. The nonlinear signal is measured around a rotational revival to extract its molecular-frame angle dependence from pump-probe time-delay scans. By comparing these measurements for two linear molecules, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, we show that the measured second-order phase parameter (temporal chirp) of the signal is sensitive to the valence electronic symmetry of the molecules, whereas the amplitude of the signal does not show such sensitivity. We compare measurements to theoretical calculations of the chirp observable in the molecular frame. This work is an important step towards using electric field measurements in nonlinear optical spectroscopy to study ultrafast dynamics of electronically excited molecules in the molecular frame.

A spectroscopic analysis of the eclipsing nova-like EC 21178−5417 – discovery of spiral density structures

ABSTRACT We present phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing nova-like cataclysmic variable EC 21178−5417 obtained between 2002 and 2013. The average spectrum of EC 21178−5417 shows broad double-peaked emission lines from He ii 4686 Å (strongest feature) and the Balmer series. The high-excitation feature, C iii/N iii at 4640–4650 Å, is also present and appears broad in emission. A number of other lines, mostly He i, are clearly present in absorption and/or emission. The average spectrum of EC 21178−5417 taken at different months and years shows variability in spectral features, especially in the Balmer lines beyond Hγ, from pure line emission, mixed line absorption, and emission to pure absorption lines. Doppler maps of the He ii 4686 Å emission reveal the presence of a highly inclined asymmetric accretion disc and a two spiral arm-like structure, whereas that of the Balmer lines (Hα and Hβ) reveal a more circular accretion disc. There is no evidence of a bright-spot in the Doppler maps of EC 21178−5417 and no emission from the secondary star is seen in the tomograms of the He ii 4686 Å and Balmer lines. Generally, the emission in EC 21178−5417 is dominated by emission from the accretion disc. We conclude that EC 21178−5417 is a member of the RW Tri or UX UMa subtype of nova-like variables based on these results and because it shows different spectral characteristics at different dates. This spectral behaviour suggests that EC 21178−5417 undergoes distinct variations in mass transfer rate on the observed time-scales of months and years.

Phase-resolved spectroscopy of Gaia14aae: line emission from near the white dwarf surface

AM CVn binaries are a class of ultracompact, hydrogen-deficient binaries, each consisting of a white dwarf accreting helium-dominated material from a degenerate or semi-degenerate donor star. Of the 56 known systems, only Gaia14aae undergoes complete eclipses of its central white dwarf, allowing the parameters of its stellar components to be tightly constrained. Here, we present phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of Gaia14aae. We use the spectra to test the assumption that the narrow emission feature known as the `central spike' traces the motion of the central white dwarf. We measure a central spike velocity amplitude of $13.8 \pm 3.2$ km/s, which agrees at the 1 $\sigma$ level with the predicted value of $17.6 \pm 1.0$ km/s based on eclipse-derived system parameters. The orbital phase offset of the central spike from its expected position is $4 \pm 15$ $^\circ$, consistent with 0 $^\circ$. Doppler maps of the He I lines in Gaia14aae show two accretion disc bright spots, as seen in many AM CVn systems. The formation mechanism for the second spot remains unclear. We detect no hydrogen in the system, but we estimate a 3 $\sigma$ limit on H$\alpha$ emission with an equivalent width of -1.14 \AA. Our detection of nitrogen and oxygen with no corresponding detection of carbon, in conjunction with evidence from recent studies, mildly favours a formation channel in which Gaia14aae is descended from a cataclysmic variable with a significantly evolved donor.

Discovery of two eclipsing X-ray binaries in M 51

We discovered eclipses and dips in two luminous (and highly variable) X-ray sources in M\,51. One (CXOM51 J132943.3$+$471135) is an ultraluminous supersoft source, with a thermal spectrum at a temperature of about 0.1 keV and characteristic blackbody radius of about $10^4$ km. The other (CXOM51 J132946.1$+$471042) has a two-component spectrum with additional thermal-plasma emission; it approached an X-ray luminosity of $10^{39}$erg s$^{-1}$ during outbursts in 2005 and 2012. From the timing of three eclipses in a series of {\it Chandra} observations, we determine the binary period ($52.75 \pm 0.63$ hr) and eclipse fraction ($22\% \pm 0.1\%$) of CXOM51 J132946.1$+$471042. We also identify a blue optical counterpart in archival {\it Hubble Space Telescope} images, consistent with a massive donor star (mass of $\sim$20--35 $M_{\odot}$). By combining the X-ray lightcurve parameters with the optical constraints on the donor star, we show that the mass ratio in the system must be $M_2/M_1 \gtrsim ~18$, and therefore the compact object is most likely a neutron star (exceeding its Eddington limit in outburst). The general significance of our result is that we illustrate one method (applicable to high-inclination sources) of identifying luminous neutron star X-ray binaries, in the absence of X-ray pulsations or phase-resolved optical spectroscopy. Finally, we discuss the different X-ray spectral appearance expected from super-Eddington neutron stars and black holes at high viewing angles.

The detection of discrete cyclotron emission features in phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of V1500 Cygni

We have obtained phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of the old nova and asynchronous polar V1500 Cyg. These new data reveal discrete cyclotron humps from two different strength magnetic fields. One region has B = 72 MG, while the other has B ≃ 105 MG. With the detection of these features, we revisit the optical/near-infrared light curves presented in Harrison & Campbell, and find that the large photometric excesses observed in those data are fully reconcilable with cyclotron emission. These results, when combined with the X-ray observations that appeared to have maxima that repeated on the orbital period, imply that V1500 Cyg has reverted back to a synchronous polar. Using existing theory, we show that the strong field strengths found here can explain the rapid spin-down time.

HS 2231+2441: an HW Vir system composed of a low-mass white dwarf and a brown dwarf★

HW Vir systems are rare evolved eclipsing binaries composed by a hot compact star and a low-mass main-sequence star in a close orbit. These systems provide a direct way to measure the fundamental properties, e.g. masses and radii, of their components, hence they are crucial to study the formation of sdB stars and low-mass white dwarfs, the common-envelope phase, and the pre-phase of cataclysmic variables. Here we present a detailed study of HS 2231+2441, an HW Vir type system, by analysing BVR$_C$I$_C$ photometry and phase-resolved optical spectroscopy. The spectra of this system, which are dominated by the primary component features, were fitted using NLTE models providing effective temperature Teff = 28500$\pm$500 K, surface gravity log g = 5.40$\pm$0.05 cm s$^{-2}$, and helium abundance log(n(He)/n(H)) = -2.52$\pm$0.07. Geometrical orbit and physical parameters were derived by modelling simultaneously the photometric and spectroscopic data using the Wilson-Devinney code. We derive two possible solutions for HS 2231+2441 that provide component's masses: M$_1$ = 0.19 M$_{\odot}$ and M$_2$ = 0.036 M$_{\odot}$ or M$_1$ = 0.288 M$_{\odot}$ and M$_2$ = 0.046 M$_{\odot}$. Considering the possible evolutionary channels to form a compact hot star, the primary of HS 2231+2441 probably evolved through the red-giant branch scenario and does not have a helium-burning core, which is consistent with a low-mass white dwarf. Both solutions are consistent with a brown dwarf as the secondary.

A photometric and spectroscopic study of NSVS 14256825: the second sdOB+dM eclipsing binary★

We present an analysis of UBVRCICJH photometry and phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of NSVS 14256825, an HW Vir type binary. The members of this class consist of a hot subdwarf and a main-sequence low-mass star in a close orbit (Porb∼ 0.1 d). Using the primary-eclipse timings, we refine the ephemeris for the system, which has an orbital period of 0.110 37 d. From the spectroscopic data analysis, we derive the effective temperature, T1= 40 000 ± 500 K, the surface gravity, log g1= 5.50 ± 0.05, and the helium abundance, ⁠, for the hot component. Simultaneously modelling the photometric and spectroscopic data using the Wilson–Devinney code, we obtain the geometrical and physical parameters of NSVS 14256825. Using the fitted orbital inclination and mass ratio (i= 82°.5 ± 0°.3 and q=M2/M1= 0.260 ± 0.012, respectively), the components of the system have M1= 0.419 ± 0.070 M⊙, R1= 0.188 ± 0.010 R⊙, M2= 0.109 ± 0.023 M⊙ and R2= 0.162 ± 0.008 R⊙. From its spectral characteristics, the hot star is classified as a subdwarf OB (sdOB) star.

Phase-resolved optical and X-ray spectroscopy of low-mass X-ray binary X1822–371

(Abridged) X1822-371 is the prototypical accretion disc corona X-ray source, a low-mass X-ray binary viewed at very high inclination, thereby allowing the disc structure and extended disc coronal regions to be visible. We study the structure of the accretion disc in X1822-371 by modelling the phase-resolved spectra both in optical and X-ray regime. We analyse high time resolution optical ESO/VLT spectra of X1822-371 to study the variability in the emission line profiles. In addition, we use data from XMM-Newton space observatory to study phase-resolved as well as high resolution X-ray spectra. We apply the Doppler tomography technique to reconstruct a map of the optical emission distribution in the system. We fit multi-component models to the X-ray spectra. We find that our results from both the optical and X-ray analysis can be explained with a model where the accretion disc has a thick rim in the region where the accretion stream impacts the disc. The behaviour of the H_beta line complex implies that some of the accreting matter creates an outburst around the accretion stream impact location and that the resulting outflow of matter moves both away from the accretion disc and towards the centre of the disc. Such behaviour can be explained by an almost isotropic outflow of matter from the accretion stream impact region. The optical emission lines of HeII 4686 and 5411 show double peaked profiles, typical for an accretion disc at high inclination. However, their velocities are slower than expected for an accretion disc in a system like X1822-371. This, combined with the fact that the HeII emission lines do not get eclipsed during the partial eclipse in the continuum, suggests that the line emission does not originate in the orbital plane and is more likely to come from above the accretion disc, for example the accretion disc wind.

Optical spectroscopy of the quiescent counterpart to EXO 0748−676: a black widow scenario?

We present phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of the counterpart to the neutron star low mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676, almost one year after it turned into quiescence. The spectra display prominent Hbeta and Hgamma and weak Fe II lines in emission. An average of all the spectra (corrected for the orbital motion) also exhibits a very weak line from Mg I. Tomographic reconstructions show that the accretion disc is not contributing to the optical line emission, which is instead dominated by the irradiated hemisphere of the companion star facing the neutron star. We could not detect absorption features from the mass donor star in the spectra. The emission lines appear broad, with an intrinsic FWHM of 255+-22 km/s. Under the assumption that the width of the Fe II emission lines is dominated by rotational broadening, we obtain a lower limit on the compact object mass which is inconsistent with a NS accretor. We discuss this incongruity and conclude that either the lines are blends of unresolved features (although this requires some fine tuning) or they are broadened by additional effects such as bulk gas motion in an outflow. The fact that the Fe II lines slightly lag in phase with respect to the companion star can be understood as outflowing gas consistent with a Black-Widow like scenario. Nevertheless, we can not rule out the possibility that blends of various emission lines cause the apparent phase lag of the Fe II emission lines as well as their large width.

Direct observation of dynamic surface acoustic wave controlled carrier injection into single quantum posts using phase-resolved optical spectroscopy

A versatile stroboscopic technique based on active phase-locking of a surface acoustic wave to picosecond laser pulses is used to monitor dynamic acoustoelectric effects. Time-integrated multichannel detection is applied to probe the modulation of the emission of a quantum well for different frequencies of the surface acoustic wave. For quantum posts we resolve dynamically controlled generation of neutral and charged excitons and preferential injection of holes into localized states within the nanostructure.

ACTIVITY ON THE M STAR OF QS Vir

We report analysis of VRIJH photometry, and phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing DA white dwarf plus dMe dwarf binary QS Vir. Modeling of the photometric data yields an inclination of $i = 74.9\pm0.6$ and a mass ratio of $q = M_2/M_1 = 0.50\pm0.05$. Our Doppler maps indicate the presence of material in the Roche lobe of the white dwarf, at a location near the M star, likely due to accretion from the stellar wind of the M star (as opposed to Roche-lobe overflow accretion). We also constructed images of the brightness distribution of the M star at different epochs which reveal the location of two stable active regions. Doppler tomography shows that the majority of the Hydrogen and Ca II H&K emission originates on the active M dwarf, likely distributed in two preferred activity longitudes, similar to active regions on BY Dra and FK Comae systems.

Optical spectroscopy of the quiescent counterpart to EXO���0748���676

We present phase resolved optical spectroscopy and X-ray timing of the neutron star X-ray binary EXO 0748−676 after the source returned to quiescence in the autumn of 2008. The X-ray light curve displays eclipses consistent in orbital period, orbital phase and duration with the predictions and measurements before the return to quiescence. Hα and He i emission lines are present in the optical spectra and show the signature of the orbit of the binary companion, placing a lower limit on the radial velocity semi-amplitude of K2 > 405 km s−1. Both the flux in the continuum and the emission lines show orbital modulations, indicating that we observe the hemisphere of the binary companion that is being irradiated by the neutron star. Effects due to this irradiation preclude a direct measurement of the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the binary companion; in fact, no stellar absorption lines are seen in the spectrum. Nevertheless, our observations place a stringent lower limit on the neutron star mass of M1 > 1.27 M⊙. For the canonical neutron star mass of M1= 1.4 M⊙, the mass ratio is constrained to 0.075 < q < 0.105.

INFRARED PHOTOMETRY AND SPECTROSCOPY OF VY Aqr AND EI Psc: TWO SHORT-PERIOD CATACLYSMIC VARIABLES WITH CURIOUS SECONDARY STARS

We present new K-band spectra of VY Aqr and EI Psc obtained with NIRSPEC on the Keck II telescope. We find a best-fitting spectral type of K4 for EI Psc, in agreement with the previous classification. The Keck spectrum of VY Aqr suggests an M0 spectral type, much hotter than previously derived. We re-reduce the original data for VY Aqr that were obtained using ISAAC on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and find a best-fitting spectral type of M6 for VY Aqr. We are unable to reconcile the two data sets. We analyze new phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of VY Aqr, obtained using UVES on the VLT, to derive the mass ratio, and show that the mass of its secondary star is very likely below the stellar/substellar boundary. We also present and model phase-resolved JHK infrared light curves for both objects, and g- and I-band light curves for EI Psc. While the light curve models for EI Psc are consistent with its spectral type, we are unable to model the light curves of VY Aqr without assuming binary star parameters outside the published range for this object.

Optical spectroscopy and Doppler tomography of Cygnus X-2

We present phase resolved optical spectroscopy and Doppler tomography of V1341 Cygni, the optical counterpart to the neutron star low mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-2. We derive a radial velocity curve for the secondary star, finding a projected radial velocity semi-amplitude of K2 = 79 +/- 3 km/s, leading to a mass function of 0.51 +/- 0.06 Msun, ~30% lower than the previous estimate. We tentatively attribute the lower value of K2 (compared to that obtained by other authors) to variations in the X-ray irradiation of the secondary star at different epochs of observations. The limited phase coverage and/or longer timebase of previous observations may also contribute to the difference in K2. Our value for the mass function implies a primary mass of 1.5 +/- 0.3 Msun, somewhat lower than previous dynamical estimates, but consistent with the value found by analysis of type-I X-ray bursts from this system. Our Doppler tomography of the broad He II 4686 line reveals that most of the emission from this line is produced on the irradiated face of the donor star, with little emission from the accretion disc. In contrast, the Doppler tomogram of the N III 4640.64 Bowen blend line shows bright emission from near the gas stream/accretion disc impact region, with fainter emission from the gas stream and secondary star. This is the first LMXB for which the Bowen blend is dominated by emission from the gas stream/accretion disc impact region, without comparable emission from the secondary star. This has implications for the interpretation of Bowen blend Doppler tomograms of other LMXBs for which the ephemeris may not be accurately known.

Optical spectroscopy and photometry of SAX J1808.4−3658 in outburst

We present phase resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of V4580 Sagittarii, the optical counterpart to the accretion powered millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658, obtained during the 2008 September/October outburst. Doppler tomography of the N iiiλ4640.64 Bowen blend emission line reveals a focused spot of emission at a location consistent with the secondary star. The velocity of this emission occurs at 324 ± 15 km s−1; applying a ‘K-correction’, we find the velocity of the secondary star projected on to the line of sight to be 370 ± 40 km s−1. Based on existing pulse timing measurements, this constrains the mass ratio of the system to be 0.044+0.005−0.004, and the mass function for the pulsar to be 0.44+0.16−0.13 M⊙. Combining this mass function with various inclination estimates from other authors, we find no evidence to suggest that the neutron star in SAX J1808.4−3658 is more massive than the canonical value of 1.4 M⊙. Our optical light curves exhibit a possible superhump modulation, expected for a system with such a low mass ratio. The equivalent width of the Ca ii H and K interstellar absorption lines suggest that the distance to the source is ∼2.5 kpc. This is consistent with previous distance estimates based on type-I X-ray bursts which assume cosmic abundances of hydrogen, but lower than more recent estimates which assume helium-rich bursts.

Optical photometry and spectroscopy of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar HETE J1900.1 − 2455

We present phase resolved optical photometry and spectroscopy of the accreting millisecond pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. Our R-band light curves exhibit a sinusoidal modulation, at close to the orbital period, which we initially attributed to X-ray heating of the irradiated face of the secondary star. However, further analysis reveals that the source of the modulation is more likely due to superhumps caused by a precessing accretion disc. Doppler tomography of a broad Halpha emission line reveals an emission ring, consistent with that expected from an accretion disc. Using the velocity of the emission ring as an estimate for the projected outer disc velocity, we constrain the maximum projected velocity of the secondary to be 200 km/s, placing a lower limit of 0.05 Msun on the secondary mass. For a 1.4 Msun primary, this implies that the orbital inclination is low, < 20 degrees. Utilizing the observed relationship between the secondary mass and orbital period in short period cataclysmic variables, we estimate the secondary mass to be ~0.085 Msun, which implies an upper limit of ~2.4 Msun for the primary mass.

A detection of the donor star of Aquila X-1 during its 2004 outburst?★

Phase-resolved high-resolution optical spectroscopy has revealed narrow N iii and He ii emission lines from the soft X-ray transient Aquila X-1 during its 2004 outburst that move as a function of the orbit consistent with the phasing of the donor star. Under the assumption that these lines come from the irradiated side of the donor star, we can constrain its K2 velocity to ≥247 ± 8 km s−1 and derive a mass function of f(M1) ≥ 1.23 ± 0.12 M⊙. Estimates for the rotational broadening based on the emission components suggest a possible massive neutron star of ≥1.6 M⊙ (at 95 per cent confidence). However, an updated ephemeris and additional high-resolution spectroscopy of Aql X-1 during a future outburst are warranted in order to confirm that the narrow lines indeed originate on the donor star surface, and reliably characterize the system parameters of this important X-ray binary. Spectra taken during the end of the outburst show that the morphology of the emission lines changed dramatically. No donor star signature was present anymore, while the presence of narrow low-velocity emission lines became clear, making Aql X-1 a member of the slowly growing class of low-velocity emission-line sources.

Multi-Epoch spectroscopy and XMM-Newton observations of RX J2115–58

Phase-resolved X-ray and optical spectroscopy of the massive binary HD 93403

We report the first results of a campaign aimed at the study of early-type binaries with the XMM-Newton observatory. Phase-resolved EPIC spectroscopy of the eccentric binary HD93403 reveals a clear orbital modulation of the X-ray luminosity as a function of the orbital phase. Below 1.0 keV, the observed X-ray flux is modulated by the opacity of the primary wind. Above 1.0 keV, the observed variation of the X-ray flux is roughly consistent with a 1/r dependence expected for an adiabatic colliding wind interaction. HD93403 appears less overluminuous in X-rays than previously thought and a significant fraction of the total X-ray emission arises probably within the winds of the individual components of the binary. Optical monitoring of the system reveals strong variability of the He II lambda 4686 and Halpha line profiles. The He II lambda 4686 line displays a broad asymmetrical emission component which is found to be significantly stronger between phases 0.80 and 0.15 than around apastron. This suggests that part of the emission arises in the interaction region and most probably in the trailing arm of a shock cone wrapped around the secondary. Some absorption lines of the secondary's spectrum display equivalent width variations reminiscent of the so-called Struve-Sahade effect. The differences in behaviour between individual lines suggest that the temperature may not be the only relevant parameter that controls this effect.

The New AM Herculis–Type Object AX J2315−592 Discovered with [ITAL]ASCA[/ITAL

The new AM Her-type object AX J2315-592 was discovered with ASCA during the observation of IRAS 23128-5919. The light curve shows a clear periodic modulation at 1.489 ± 0.013 hr. Follow-up phase-resolved optical spectroscopy confirmed coincidence of the rotational period of the white dwarf and the orbital period and identified AX J2315-592 as a new AM Her-type object. The shape of the X-ray light curve is quasi-sinusoidal, the amplitude of which decreases with increasing X-ray energy, which is the property of intermediate polars. The X-ray emission at the maximum of the folded light curve has an optically thin thermal plasma emission spectrum with a temperature of 17 ± 4 keV with negligible absorption. The spectrum at the minimum, on the other hand, suffers from complex absorption. The X-ray light curve and the spectral characteristics indicate that a single accreting pole is always within the visible hemisphere of the white dwarf, and the rotational minimum occurs when the pole points toward the observer.
