Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants in aqueous systems, posing threat to both human health and environment. In prior research, predominant focus has been on examining various adsorbents for removing PPCPs from single-pollutant systems. However, no study has delved into simultaneous adsorption of PPCPs multi-pollutant mixture. This study evaluates performance of Azadirachta indica leaf extract-based green-synthesized ZnO nanoparticles coated on spent tea waste activated carbon (ZTAC) for removing sulfadiazine (SZN) and acetaminophen (ACN). Adsorption investigations were conducted in single-component (ACN/SZN) and binary-component (ACN + SZN) systems. The synthesized ZTAC was characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX, porosimetry and pHpzc analysis. The study examines impact of time (1–60 min), dose (0.2–4 g/L), pH (2–12) and PPCPs concentration (1–100 mg/L) on ACN and SZN removal. Various kinetic and isotherm models were employed to elucidate mechanisms involved in sorption of PPCPs. Furthermore, synergistic and antagonistic aspects of sorption process in multi-component system were investigated. ZTAC, characterized by its crystalline nature and surface area of 980.85 m2/g, exhibited maximum adsorption capacity of 47.39 mg/g for ACN and 34.01 mg/g for SZN under optimal conditions of 15 min, 3 g/L and pH 7. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model best-fitted the experimental data indicating chemisorption mechanism. Removal of ACN and SZN on ZTAC demonstrated synergistic nature, signifying cooperative adsorption. Overall, valorization of ZTAC offers effective and efficient adsorbent for elimination of PPCPs from wastewater.

For the occurrence of PPCPs from source to tap: A novel approach modified in terms of sample preservation and SPE cartridge to monitor PPCPs in our water supply

BackgroundThe ongoing infusion of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) into ecosystems sustains a perpetual life cycle and leads to multi-generational exposures. Limited understanding of their environmental impact and their intrinsic ability to induce physiological effect in humans, even at low doses, pose great risks to human health. Few scholarly works have conducted systematic research into the occurrence of PPCPs within potable water systems. Concurrently, the associated monitoring techniques have not been comprehensively examined with regards to the specific nature of drinking water, namely whether the significant presence of disinfectants may influence the detection of PPCPs. ResultsA modified approach in terms of detailed investigation of sample preservation and optimization of an in-lab fabricated solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge filled with DVB-VP and PS-DVB sorbent was proposed. Favorable methodological parameters were achieved, with correlation coefficients spanning from 0.9866 to 0.9998. The LODs of the PPCPs fluctuated from 0.001 to 2 μg L−1, while the LOQs varied from 0.002 to 5 μg L−1. The analysis of spiked samples disclosed a methodological precision of 2.31–9.86 % and a recovery of 52.4–119 %. We utilized the established method for analyzing 14 water samples of three categories (source water, finished water and tap water) from five centralized water supply plants. A total of 24 categories encompassing 72 PPCPs were detected, with the concentrations of PPCPs manifested a marked decrease from source water to finished water and finally to tap water. SignificanceOur research meticulously examined the enhancement and purification effects of widely used commercial SPE cartridges and suggested the use of in-lab fabricated SPE cartridges packed with DVB-VP and PS-DVB adsorbents. We also conducted a systematic evaluation of the need to incorporate ascorbic acid and sodium thiosulfate as preservatives for PPCP measurement, in consideration of the unique characteristics of drinking water matrices, specifically, the significant concentration levels of disinfectants. Furthermore, the proposed method was effectively employed to study the presence of PPCPs in source water, finished water, and tap water collected from centralized water supply plants.

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the surface water of Lipu River, China

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) are inadvertently released into the aquatic environment, causing detrimental effects on aquatic ecosystem. There is an urgent need of an in-deep investigation on contamination information of PPCPs in aquatic environment as well as the ecological risks to the aquatic ecosystem. This study was carried out in Lipu River basin, China, to investigate the distribution pattern and ecological risks of PPCPs. Results showed that PPCPs pollution is ubiquitous, 29 out of 30 targeted PPCPs were detected in Lipu River. Fourteen PPCPs were detected with a frequency of 100% in all water samples, and ten PPCPs were detected with a frequency of more than 80%. The cumulated PPCPs concentrations ranged from 33.30 ng/L to 99.60 ng/L, with a median value of 47.20 ng/L in Lipu River. Caffeine, flumequine, nifedipine, and lomefloxacin were the predominant PPCPs in study area. Caffeine showed high ecological risk, five and seven individual PPCP showed medium and low ecological risk to algae.

Pollution levels and ecological risks of PPCPs in water and sediment samples of Danjiangkou Reservoir.

The concentrations and distribution patterns of three typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water and sediment samples obtained from Danjiangkou Reservoir during two seasonal sampling periods were studied to determine their impact on water quality. The temporal and spatial variations in concentrations measured were analyzed and related to ecological risks with data obtained during the mean-flow period (in June) and the dry period (in November). We found a high detection rate of ketoprofen (KTP) in water samples from Danjiangkou Reservoir; the concentrations ranged from not detected (ND) to 46.80ng/L with the highest values measured in the Hanku tributary samples followed by the samples collected in the main body of Danjiangkou Reservoir. The KTP concentrations in the Danku tributary samples were the lowest measured in this study. In addition, the concentrations of KTP in the Shending River, Sihe River, Jianghe River, Guanshan River, and Jianhe River water samples were relatively high in the mean-flow period. The water sample detection rates and concentrations of triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) were low in both the mean-flow period and the dry period. All three kinds of PPCPs were detected in the sediment samples with the concentrations of KTP, TCS, and TCC ranging from 0.76 to 7.89μg/kg, 0.01 to 0.59μg/kg, and 0.01 to 11.36μg/kg, respectively. Overall, the concentrations of the three measured PPCPs in the water and sediment samples were all relatively low compared to results reported in the recent literature. The dry period concentrations of PPCPs in the water samples were lower than the concentrations measured in the mean-flow period. However, dry period concentrations were higher in the sediment samples compared to those in the mean-flow period samples. Our interpretation of the spatial and temporal patterns of PPCPs in Danjiangkou Reservoir suggests that these compounds were likely mainly derived from wastewater discharge in the upper reaches of the reservoir. The risk quotient (RQ) method was used for an ecological risk assessment of the detected PPCPs in this study. We found that TCS in water and sediment posed medium ecological risks to algae at different times of the year. In view of the extreme importance of water safety in Danjiangkou Reservoir, the ecological risks of PPCPs require additional attention.

Contamination Characteristics and Ecological Risk Assessment of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in Drains Flowing into the Yellow River of Ningxia

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are a group of emerging contaminants causing detrimental effects on aquatic living organisms even at low doses. To investigate the contamination characteristics and ecological risks of PPCPs in drains flowing into the Yellow River of Ningxia, 21 PPCPs were detected and analyzed using solid phase extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in this study. All 21 targeted compounds were detected in the drains, with total concentrations ranging from 47.52 to 1 700.96 ng·L-1. Ciprofloxacin, acetaminophen, benzophenone-3, and diethyltoluamide were the more commonly detected compounds, with detection frequencies exceeding 80%. The five highest-concentration PPCPs were acetaminophen, diethyltoluamide, caffeine, benzophenone-3, and levofloxacin, with the maximum concentrations of 597.21, 563.23, 559.00, 477.28, and 473.07 ng·L-1, respectively. Spatial analysis showed that the pollution levels of PPCPs in the drains of the four cities were different, with average concentrations of ∑PPCPs in the order of Yinchuan>Shizuishan>Wuzhong>Zhongwei. The total concentration of PPCPs before flowing into the Yellow River ranged from 124.82 to 1 046.61 ng·L-1. Source analysis showed that livestock and poultry breeding wastewater was the primary source for sulfadiazine and oxytetracycline, whereas medical wastewater was the primary source for levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. The primary sources of triclocarban and triclosan were domestic sewage and industrial wastewater, whereas the primary source of caffeine and diethyltoluamide was domestic sewage. The pollution of diciofenac, cimetidine, triclocarban, and triclosan in the drains was positively correlated with the regional population and economic development level. The ecological risk assessment indicated that levofloxacin, diclofenac, gemfibrozil, benzophenone-3, and triclocarban posed high risks to aquatic organisms in drains flowing into the Yellow River. It is worthwhile to consider the mixture risk of the PPCPs that exhibited high risk at most sampling sites.

Investigating antimicrobial resistance determinants and micropollutants in urban sewage treatment plants of India: Occurrence, removal and ecotoxicological risk

Environmental contamination caused by emerging pollutants (EPs) and their associated ecological risk have received limited attention in India. Thus, this study aims to address this gap by investigating the occurrence and removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in two sewage treatment plants (STPs) in New Delhi. The study also assessed the ecological risk associated with PPCPs in aquatic environments. Among the targeted ARB and ARGs, erythromycin resistant bacteria and ermB gene, respectively were the most ubiquitous pollutants in the influent of both STPs. In the final effluent, there was a reduction ranging from 0.8 log to 2.8 log units for most ARB, while removal of the majority of ARGs was less than 1 log unit. The secondary treatment demonstrated better removal of total ARG concentrations compared to the tertiary treatment methods employed in both STPs. Regarding PPCPs, metformin was quantified in both influent and effluent samples at a concentration exceeding 19,000 ng/L, indicating its persistence in wastewater. High concentrations of ARB, ARGs, and PPCPs were observed in undigested biosolids, while low to moderate removal of these pollutants was observed after anaerobic digestion. To assess the ecological risk, a risk quotient (RQ) assessment was conducted. The results revealed that compounds such as erythromycin, terbinafine, 17-α ethinylestradiol (EE2), 17-β estradiol (E2), diclofenac, triclosan, carbamazepine, and mefenamic acid exhibited high risks in the effluent. Additionally, EE2 and E2 showed higher risk levels in the digested biosolids, indicating potential risks to the aquatic ecosystem.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Trophic Transfer of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Bohai Sea.

The ubiquitous presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in environments has aroused global concerns; however, minimal information is available regarding their multimedia distribution, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer in marine environments. Herein, we analyzed 77 representative PPCPs in samples of surface and bottom seawater, surface sediments, and benthic biota from the Bohai Sea. PPCPs were pervasively detected in seawater, sediments, and benthic biota, with antioxidants being the most abundant PPCPs. PPCP concentrations positively correlated between the surface and bottom water with a decreasing trend from the coast to the central oceans. Higher PPCP concentrations in sediment were found in the Yellow River estuary, and the variations in the physicochemical properties of PPCPs and sediment produced a different distribution pattern of PPCPs in sediment from seawater. The log Dow, but not log Kow, showed a linear and positive relationship with bioaccumulation and trophic magnification factors and a parabolic relationship with biota-sediment accumulation factors. The trophodynamics of miconazole and acetophenone are reported for the first time. This study provides novel insights into the multimedia distribution and biomagnification potential of PPCPs and suggests that log Dow is a better indicator of their bioaccumulation and trophic magnification.

Seasonal variation and dissolved organic matter influence on the distribution, transformation, and environmental risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in coastal zone: a case study of Tianjin, China

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants that have raised urgent environmental issues. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a pivotal role on PPCPs’ migration and transformation. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the occurrence and distribution of PPCPs, a seasonal sampling focused on the riverine system in coastal zone, Tianjin, Bohai Rim was conducted. The distribution and transformation of thirty-three PPCPs and their interaction with DOM were investigated, and their sources and ecological risks were further evaluated. The total concentration of PPCPs ranges from 0.01 to 197.20 μg/L, and such value is affected by regional temperature, DOM and land use types. PPCPs migration at the soil-water interface is controlled by temperature, sunlight, water flow and DOM. PPCPs have a high affinity to the protein-like DOM, while the humus-like DOM plays a negative influence and facilitates the PPCPs’ degradation. It is also found that protein-like DOM can represent point source pollution, while humus-like substances indicate non-point source (NPS) emission. Specific PPCPs can be used as markers to trace the source of domestic discharge. Additionally, daily use PPCPs such as ketoprofen, caffeine and iopromide are estimated to be the main risk substances, and the PPCPs ecological risk varies on space, season and river hydraulic condition.

Spatiotemporal distribution and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from Luoma Lake, an important node of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

PPCPs (pharmaceuticals and personal care products) are widely found in the environment and can be a risk to human and ecosystem health. In this study, spatiotemporal distribution, critical risk source identification and potential risks of 14 PPCPs found in water collected from sampling points in Luoma Lake and its inflowing rivers in two seasons in 2019 and 2020 were investigated. The PPCPs concentrations ranged from 27.64ng·L-1 to 613.08ng·L-1 in December 2019, and from 16.67ng·L-1 to 3287.41ng·L-1 in April 2020. Ketoprofen (KPF) dominated the PPCPs with mean concentrations of 125.85ng·L-1 and 640.26ng·L-1, respectively. Analysis of sources showed that the pollution in Luoma Lake mostly originated from sewage treatment plant effluents, inflowing rivers and domestic wastewater. Among them, the inflowing rivers contributed the most (82.95%) to the concentration of total PPCPs. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that there was a moderate risk (0.1 < RQs < 1) from carbamazepine (CBZ) in December 2019 and a high risk (RQs > 1) from naproxen (NPX) in April 2020. The results of human risk assessment found that NPX posed a high risk to infant health, and we found that NPX was associated with 83 diseases according to Comparative Toxicogenomics Database. NPX was identified as a substance requiring major attention. The results provide an understanding of the concentrations and ecological risks of PPCPs in Luoma Lake. We believe the data will support environmental departments to develop management strategies and prevent PPCPs pollution.

Occurrence and distribution of PPCPs in water from two largest urban lakes of China: First perspective from DGT in-situ measurement

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are an important group of emerging contaminants that may threaten organisms at trace concentrations. However, research on the occurrence of PPCPs in urban lakes in China is still scarce. In this study, 15 PPCPs in the Tangxun Lake and the Donghu Lake were collected using the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Thirteen of the 15 targeted PPCPs were detected in the Tangxun Lake, and all PPCPs were detected in the Donghu Lake, with total concentrations ranging from 160 to 730 ng/L (average: 401 ng/L) and 187 to 1933 ng/L (average: 653 ng/L), respectively. Bisphenol A (BPA) was the dominant PPCP, followed by disinfectants in both lakes. The total concentrations of PPCPs in the Donghu Lake were higher than those in the Tangxun Lake. The spatial distribution characteristics of PPCPs in the two lakes were different, with higher total concentrations in the eastern part than in the western part of the Tangxun Lake spatially and higher in the north-western part than in the south-eastern part of the Donghu Lake. The results of the risk assessment showed that BPA and estrone posed high risks to the aquatic environment (RQ ≥ 1), while triclosan and estriol presented a medium risk (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1) in some sites. This study was the first attempt to apply DGT for providing vital data on the evaluation of the ecological risk of PPCPs in the two largest lakes in China, and attention should be paid to the long-term ecological effects caused by the occurrence of PPCPs in lakes.

Effect and microbial mechanism of pharmaceutical and personal care product exposure on partial nitrification process and nitrous oxide emission

This study focused on the short- and long-term exposure of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) to the partial nitrification process and nitrous oxide emission. The corresponding microbial mechanisms were also explored. The results revealed a concentration-dose effect on the partial nitrification process. Moreover, the PPCP concentration of ≥2 μg/L featured inhibitory effects on the process. The solo effect of PPCP on the partial nitrification process was analyzed through microcosmic experiments, and the results revealed significant variations in PN. A dose-effect relationship existed between the PPCP concentration and N2O emission intensity. After exposure to PPCPs, the N2O emission released during the partial nitrification process was significantly reduced. Different PPCPs featured various effects in mitigating N2O emissions. Low PPCP concentrations led to a reduction in the richness and diversity of microbes, but their community structure remained significantly unchanged. High PPCP concentrations (≥5 μg/L) resulted in increased species richness and diversity, but their microbial community composition was significantly affected. The function prediction and nitrogen metabolic pathway analysis indicated that PPCP exposure led to the inhibition of the ammonia oxidation process. However, all genes encoding denitrification enzymes were upregulated. The microorganisms in the microbial community featured modular structural properties and wide synergistic relationships between genera. This study provides valuable insights into the effect of PPCP exposure on the particle nitrification process and corresponding changes in the microbial community.

Ecological risks induced by consumption and emission of Pharmaceutical and personal care products in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: Insights from the polar regions

As the third pole of the world and Asia's water tower, the Tibetan Plateau experiences daily release of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) due to increasing human activity. This study aimed to explore the potential relationship between the concentration and composition of PPCPs and human activity, by assessing the occurrence of PPCPs in areas of typical human activity on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and evaluating their ecological risk. The results indicate that 28 out of 30 substances were detected in concentrations ranging from less than 1 ng/L to hundreds of ng/L, with the average concentration of most PPCPs in the Tibet Autonomous Region being higher than that in Qinghai Province. Among the detected substances, CAF, NOR, CTC, CIP, TCN, OTC, AZN, and DOX accounted for over 90% of the total concentration. The emission sources of PPCPs were identified by analyzing the correlation coefficients of soil and water samples, with excess PPCPs used by livestock breeding discharged directly into soil and then into surface water through leaching or runoff. By comparing the concentration and composition of PPCPs with those in other regions, this study found that CIP, ENR, LOM, NOR, CTC, DOX, OTC, and TCN were the most commonly used PPCPs in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. To assess the ecological risk of PPCPs, organisms at different trophic levels, including algae, crustaceans, fish, and insects, were selected. The prediction of the no effect concentration of each PPCP showed that NOR, CTC, TCN, CAF, and CBZ may have deleterious effects on water biota. This study can assist in identifying the emission characteristics of PPCPs from different types and intensities of human activities, as well as their occurrence and fate during the natural decay of aquatic systems.

Profiling of the spatiotemporal distribution, risks, and prioritization of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in coastal waters of the northern Yellow Sea, China

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have aroused global concerns due to their ubiquitous occurrence and detrimental effects. The spatiotemporal distributions of 64 PPCPs and their synergetic ecological risks were comprehensively investigated in the seawater of Yantai Bay, and 1 H-benzotriazole (BT), ethenzamide, phenazone, propyphenazone, 4-hydroxybenzophenone and N, N′-diphenylurea were first determined in the seawater of China. Fifty-six PPCPs were detected and their concentrations were 27.5–182 ng/L, with BT contributing around 58.0%. Higher PPCP concentrations were observed in winter and spring, with the concentrations of antioxidants, analgesic/anti-inflammatory drugs and human-used antibiotics significantly higher in winter, while those of aquaculture-used antibiotics and UV filters significantly higher in summer, which was closely related with their usage patterns. Positive correlations were observed for PPCP concentrations between surface and bottom water, except summer, during which time the weak vertical exchange and varied environmental behaviors among different PPCPs resulted in the distinct compositions and concentrations. Terrestrial inputs and mariculture resulted in higher PPCP concentrations in the area located adjacent to the coast and aquaculture bases. The PPCP mixtures posed medium to high risk to crustaceans, and bisphenol A was identified as a high-risk pollutant that needs special attention.

Occurrence and removal rate of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in an urban wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China

The occurrence and removal rate of 52 typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were investigated in a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China. Thirty-three PPCPs were found in the influent, with caffeine (CF, 11387.0 ng L−1) being the most abundant, followed by N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET, 9568.4 ng L−1), metoprolol (MTP, 930.2 ng L−1), and diclofenac (DF, 710.3 ng L−1). After treatment processes, the cumulative concentration of PPCPs decreased from 2.54 × 104 ng L−1 to 1.44 × 103 ng L−1, with the overall removal efficiency (RE) of 94.3%. Different treatment processes showed varying contributions in removing PPCPs. PPCPs were efficiently removed in sedimentation, anoxic, and ultraviolet units. For individual compounds, a great variation in RE (52.1–100%) was observed. Twenty-two PPCPs were removed by more than 90%. The highly detected PPCPs in the influent were almost completely removed. Aerated grit chamber removed nearly 50% of fluoroquinolone (FQs) and more than 60% of sulfonamides. Most PPCPs showed low or negative removals during anaerobic treatment, except for CF which was eliminated by 64.9%. Anoxic treatment demonstrated positive removals for most PPCPs, with the exceptions of DF, MTP, bisoprolol, carbamazepine (CBZ), and sibutramine. DEET and bezafibrate were efficiently removed during the secondary sedimentation. Denitrification biological filter and membrane filtration also showed positive effect on most PPCPs removals. The remaining compounds were oxidized by 16–100% in ozonation. DF, sulpiride, ofloxacin (OFL), trimethoprim, and phenolphthalein were not amenable to ultraviolet. After the treatment, the residue OFL, CBZ, and CF in receiving water were identified to pose high risk to aquatic organisms. Considering the complex mixtures emitted into the environment, therapeutic groups psychotropics, stimulant, and FQs were classified as high risk. These findings provide valuable insights into adopting appropriate measures for more efficient PPCPs removals, and emphasize the importance of continued monitoring specific PPCPs and mixtures thereof to safeguard the ecosystem.

Effects of nanoplastics and microplastics on the availability of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aqueous environment

Nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) could act as potential carriers for pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and alter the bioavailability in the aquatic environment. The effects of NPs and MPs of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) on the availability of five PPCPs including carbamazepine, bisphenol A, estrone, triclocarban and 4-tert-octylphenol were investigated by negligible depletion solid- phase microextraction (nd-SPME). The freely dissolved concentrations of PPCPs decreased with the increasing concentrations of NPs/MPs. The overall order of the sorption coefficients (logKNP / logKMP) of PPCPs was as follows: 100 nm PS > 50 nm PS > 1 µm PS > 100 µm PS > 100 µm PE. Sorption of PPCPs by NPs was generally 1–2 orders of magnitude stronger than to MPs. The log KNP / log KMP values (3.16–5.21) increased with the log KOW (2.45–5.28) of PPCPs, however, linear correlation was only observed between log KMP and log KOW. The particle size, specific surface area, aggregation state as well as hydrophobicity played an important role in the sorption. Coexistence of fulic acid (FA) with NPs inhibited the sorption due to the fouling of FA on NPs. This study suggests that sorption of PPCPs to MPs/NPs could reduce bioavailability of PPCPs in the aquatic environment.

Effects of Long-Term Exposure of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products on Algogenic Organic Matter Characteristics

Algal organic matter (AOM) released from microalgae has high potential effects for water treatment. In response to the complex problem of algal-laden water treatment, this study investigated the characteristics of AOM of Microcystis aeruginosa under long-term exposure to pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). The results indicated that algae under low carbamazepine (&lt;10 µg/L), high naproxen (&gt;10 µg/L), and/or diclofenac at any concentration treatment promoted the release of total organic matter, whereas they were inhibited at high carbamazepine and low naproxen exposure. Macromolecular organics of AOM were inhibited when algae were subjected to long-term exposure to carbamazepine at any concentration (0.25–1000 µg/L), and the higher the carbamazepine concentration was, the more seriously macromolecular organics were inhibited. For naproxen and diclofenac treatment, macro- and medium-molecular-weight organics were promoted under high concentration treatment (&gt;1 µg/L), yet they were inhibited under low concentration &lt;10 µg/L. The fluorescent organics of AOM were also changed by fluorescence excitation-emission matrices-parallel factor analysis, with the fluorescent intensity of humic-like and protein-like substances inhabited under carbamazepine of any concentration, whereas they were promoted under high naproxen treatment (&gt;10 µg/L). This research had significant effects on algal-laden water treatment containing various PPCPs concentrations as well as the risk assessment of PPCPs in water.

Bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in freshwater pearl mussels Hyriopsis cumingii in Poyang Lake

Thirty-five PPCPs were measured in representative freshwater pearl mussels (Hyriopsis cumingii) in Poyang Lake, the largest lake of China, as well as their responses to sedimentary PPCPs. We observed 32 PPCPs in soft tissues of mussels at a total concentration of 2721.5 ± 929.3 ng·g−1 dry weight (dw), much higher than those in sediments (21 PPCPs, 273.2 ± 89.4 ng·g−1 dw). Anti-inflammatories were the primary contaminants detected in both sediments and mussels. PPCP concentrations in mussels exhibited significant organ-specific characteristics, and gonads were identified as a hotspot for these contaminants. Correlation analysis showed that gonads were more likely to assimilate triclosan from sediments. Biochemical analysis revealed a higher physiological sensitivity of glutathione synthesis in gonads to sedimentary PPCPs, suggesting the long-term oxidative damage. Our findings highlight the concern on the potential effects of sedimentary PPCPs to propagation of mussels, and emphasize the necessity to formulate strategies for sedimentary PPCPs control targeting a healthy lake.

Spatial variations and ecological risks assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in typical lakes of Wuhan, China

Lakes are terminal sink of PPCPs, since PPCPs were transported to aquatic system from wastewater treatment plant effluent. Meanwhile, the ecological risks caused by PPCPs to the lakes have aroused wide concern. This study investigated the presence and distribution of PPCPs in 19 typical lakes in Wuhan city; the short term and long-term ecological risk were assessed. The concentration of ten typical PPCPs and the correlation between PPCPs and water quality parameters were analyzed. Ten PPCPs were widely detected, showing that these PPCPs were abundant in the research region. The total PPCPs concentrations varied from 0.44 to 2.1 * 102 ng/L in water sample and ≤ 5.3 ng/g in sediments. According to the results, two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen) were predominated compared to other PPCPs tested in the lakes of Wuhan city. The Pearson correlation analysis revealed a substantial positive correlation (p < 0.01) between NH4+-N and ibuprofen concentration, indicating that ibuprofen could be produced from the same sources of NH4+-N. Some PPCPs has shown positive correlation (p < 0.01) with suspended particles in concentrations. A negative correlation in water-sediment distribution for PPCPs was also observed. The potential ecological risks of PPCPs to the lakes were further evaluated. Results implied that ofloxacin posed the highest potential short-term risk of all the ten PPCPs. Sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole and roxithromycin posed a potential long-term risk in Niushan lake. This study investigated PPCPs distribution on a large spatial scale in Wuhan lakes in the post-epidemic era and revealed the importance of ofloxacin control in Wuhan. The findings of this work suggests that the long-term management for lake ecosystems is crucial.

Impacts of garbage classification and disposal on the occurrence of pharmaceutical and personal care products in municipal solid waste leachates: A case study in Shanghai

Leachate generated during the treatment and disposal of municipal solid wastes (MSWs) can be an important source of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment. With the implementation of garbage classification policy in China, the disposal methods of MSWs have changed, while its impacts on the occurrence of PPCPs in the generated leachate remain unknown. In this study, we investigated 49 target PPCPs in the leachates of classified MSWs, i.e. residual waste leachate (RWL) and food waste leachate (FWL), and revealed the influence of garbage classification implementation on the occurrence of PPCPs in leachates to be treated. The results showed the concentration and mass load of target PPCPs in the RWL samples (median values: 34.9 ng/L and 52.3 mg/d, respectively) were significantly higher than those in the FWL samples (median values: 19.3 ng/L and 14.5 mg/d, respectively). Macrolide (ML) antibiotics were the predominant PPCPs in the RWL samples, while in the FWL samples, quinolone (QL) antibiotics exhibited the highest concentration and mass load. The implementation of garbage classification policy led to the reduction of PPCP mass load (from 739 g/d to 262 g/d) in leachates to be treated. The findings are helpful for better designing or managing MSW treatment and disposal processes to minimize the emission of PPCPs from MSW leachates.

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the surface water of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section)

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are commonly seen emerging organic contaminants in aquatic environments. The transects for the occurrence and distribution of 24 PPCPs along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section) were investigated in this study. All 24 targeted compounds were detected in surface water, with concentrations in the range from not detected (ND) to 527.4ng/L. Among these PPCPs, caffeine is found to have the highest concentration and its detection frequency is 100%. The total PPCP concentration ranged from 136ng/L to 916ng/L (median, 319.5ng/L). Spatial analysis showed that the pollution level of PPCPs in the trunk stream was lower than that in most tributaries in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section). The ecotoxicological risk assessment indicated that norfloxacin, azithromycin, estrone, and triclosan posed high risks to aquatic organisms (RQ > 1), roxithromycin and oxytetracycline imposed moderate risks (0.1≤ RQ < 1), and the tributary Jindi River had the highest mixed risk (MRQ = 222).
