Assessing Patient Feedback on the Feasibility of the YourRx Telepharmacy Mobile Application.

Background: Telepharmacy is a method utilized in pharmacy practice that delivers pharmaceutical care services via telecommunication technology. In the Philippines, the current process for patients to avail of telepharmacy services utilizes a variety of existing applications or websites instead of a single application. Objectives: This study aimed to assess patient feedback on the feasibility of the newly developed telepharmacy mobile application, YourRx. Specifically, it evaluated the application's functionality, usability, security, and performance. Methods: The study had 3 phases: (1) the design and development phase, (2) the implementation phase, wherein the pharmacists and patients were oriented beforehand with the use of YourRx mobile application, and (3) the evaluation phase, where the mobile application was evaluated for its functionality, usability, security, and performance by the patients through the use of a survey questionnaire and an interview. Results: YourRx application was developed and evaluated successfully. It is available for Android users and has primary features, including video calls, sharing, and setting an appointment. A total of 46 patients used the YourRx. Most of the patients were very satisfied with the navigation, service acquisition, and overall design of the YourRx. They expressed convenience in acquiring telepharmacy services because the application was easy to understand, use, and navigate. Conclusion: YourRx is a pioneering telepharmacy mobile application in the Philippines. The results of this study substantiate that YourRx is a user-friendly platform that provides patients convenient access to telepharmacy services with less time and effort thus improving patient health outcomes.

The effect of clinical pharmacist-led pharmaceutical care services on medication adherence, clinical outcomes and quality of life in patients with stroke: a randomised controlled trial.

Stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Pharmaceutical care services play a significant role in managing the risk factors associated with stroke. This study aimed to examine the effects of a one-year pharmaceutical care programme on medication adherence, quality of life and clinical outcomes of patients with stroke. This study was conducted as a randomised controlled trial at the neurology clinic of a university hospital in Türkiye. Patients were randomly assigned to either an intervention group or usual care group (IG vs UCG). A simple randomization method using computer-based random numbers was used to assign participants in a 1:1 ratio. The IG received pharmaceutical care including medication reconciliation, medication review and patient education in addition to routine health services. The medication adherence, quality of life and clinical parameters of the patients were evaluated at the beginning and the end of the 12th month. This study included 193 patients (89 and 104 patients in the IG and the UCG, respectively; mean age: 60.1years), of whom 67.4% were male. At the one-year follow-up evaluation, the percentage of adherent patients (86.5% vs 47.1%, p < 0.001) and the total Stroke-Specific Quality of Life score (184.9 vs 166.0, p < 0.001) were higher in the IG than in the UCG. The stroke recurrence rate at the one-year follow-up (2.2% vs 10.6%, p = 0.044) was lower in the IG than in the UCG. Pharmaceutical care services improved the medication adherence, quality of life and clinical outcomes of patients with stroke. Embracing telepharmacy: Unveiling Malaysians' perceptions and knowledge through online survey.

The expansion of information technologies, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, has notably increased the use of remote services, including telehealth. Telepharmacy, a subset of telehealth, offers remote pharmaceutical care services, benefiting patients by providing advice and consultations without the need for physical pharmacy visits. This study aimed to assess public perceptions and awareness of telepharmacy in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from Nov 2022 to May 2023, involving 387 Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. Data collection utilised Google Forms distributed via social medias, covering demographics, technological readiness, awareness, perceptions, and willingness related to telepharmacy. The study demonstrated high digital readiness among respondents, owning smartphones and being adept in utilising various digital features. However, there was a lack of awareness regarding the concept of telepharmacy. Despite predominantly positive perceptions of its potential, only 48.1% of respondents showed willingness to utilise telepharmacy services. While respondents exhibited readiness for digital engagement, there was a notable deficit in understanding telepharmacy. Though perceptions were positive, willingness to embrace telepharmacy was moderate. Addressing the knowledge gap through targeted education initiatives might enhance acceptance. Future research should focus on integrating telepharmacy into healthcare systems considering public preferences, thereby evaluating its actual implementation and outcomes among diverse demographics.

Assessment of Community Pharmacists’ Knowledge and Perception of Pharmaceutical Care in South Africa: A Cross-sectional Survey

Background: Medicines are intended to cure, prevent, or diagnose diseases, alleviate signs, or symptoms, but improper use can cause patient morbidity and even mortality. Pharmacists assume direct responsibility for all the patient’s drug-related needs. Hence, pharmacists’ knowledge and attitudes regarding pharmaceutical care (PC) and their perceived barriers to PC provision are imperative to treatment success. The aim of the study was to explore community pharmacists’ knowledge and perception towards pharmaceutical care and identifying perceived barriers towards its implementation in South Africa. Methods: A quantitative study was undertaken, using a descriptive cross-sectional design. The data were collected by means of an online questionnaire completed by community pharmacists across South Africa. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, through Microsoft Excel and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: Out of 250 online questionnaires sent, a total of 181 responded, which delivered an 72.4% response rate. The vast majority (n=166; 91.7%) of the respondents were knowledgeable about PC though a few (n=15; 8.3%) of the respondents had a poor understanding of PC. A high number of respondents (n=173;95.5%) agreed that providing PC would increase the patients’ confidence in the pharmacy profession (n=173; 95.5%); and about 87.2% responded that all pharmacists should provide PC services. Lack of compensation for PC provision was perceived as the main barrier (83.9%). Conclusion: South African community pharmacists have good knowledge of PC, but a lack of remuneration and time were perceived as the main barriers to PC provision. Relevant stake holders like policymakers in pharmaceutical service, health care financial managers, and pharmacy managers should intervene to overcome these barriers.

Risk Characterization in Patients Using Benzodiazepines While Providing Pharmaceutical Care Dispensing Service.

Tolerance and dependence stand out as the most relevant risks observed during benzodiazepine (BZD) treatments. To evaluate the degree of dependence of patients on BZD treatments using the Tyrer test; to define a profile of patients at risk of developing BZD dependence; and to discuss the role of the pharmaceutical care offered by the community pharmacy during dispensing. Prospective cross-sectional descriptive observational study (August 2020-February 2021) involving 127 patients using BZD. They voluntarily answered a questionnaire during the dispensing pharmaceutical care service. The study was evaluated and codified (code: DAA-CLO-2020-01) by the Spanish Agency for Drugs and Health Products (AEMPS), and statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 25.0. 19.05% of patients using BZD were suspected of suffering from BZD tolerance, and 77.88% of all patients were identified as being at a high risk of BZD dependence. The Tyrer test for dependence indicated a mean score of 5.59 out of 13 points. An 18-fold increased risk of developing dependence was detected in the case of coexistence of high anxiety or depression. The community pharmacy, through protocolized care practices and supported by tools such as the Tyrer test, can play a decisive role in the detection, prevention, and resolution of the risks associated with BZD treatments.

Pharmacists’s knowledge, attitude, and practices towards pharmaceutical and patient-centred care in asthma management: A national study

BackgroundAsthma, a chronic respiratory disease, is effectively managed with medications, yet many patients struggle due to irregular treatment and poor adherence. Pharmacists play a crucial role in improving asthma care through pharmaceutical care (PC) services. This study aims to assess pharmacists’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding asthma PC in Türkiye. MethodsThis cross-sectional study in Türkiye evaluated community (CP) and hospital pharmacists’ (HP) knowledge level, attitudes, and behaviors regarding asthma care. A validated Asthma Pharmaceutical Care Knowledge (APCL) and Asthma Attitudes and Behaviors (AAB) questionnaires were used to assess their knowledge levels and attitudes toward asthma pharmaceutical care. ResultsOut of 400 pharmacists participated the questionnaire, the majority were CP (297, 74.25 %). Both CP and HP demonstrated adequate knowledge scores, 79.39 ± 12.32 and 80.66 ± 12.25, respectively. APCL mean scores of CP and HP were 4.22 ± 0.523 and 4.29 ± 0.383. No statistically significant difference in asthma knowledge levels was observed between CP and HP. Both groups reported positive attitudes and behaviors toward asthma care, with CP scoring 4.71 ± 0.446 and HP scoring 4.74 ± 0.330 on the AAB questionnaire. ConclusionsThis study revealed that both CP and HP have sufficient knowledge about asthma and they have positive attitudes towards providing asthma PC. Pharmacists have crucial role in asthma care with leveraging their expertise, patient interactions, and ability to referral capabilities.

Telepharmacy in Indonesia: Navigating Knowledge, Perception, and Readiness Among 6,000 Pharmacists and Related Sociodemographic Determinants.

Introduction: Telepharmacy can improve the delivery of pharmaceutical care services to patients. However, there are limited data regarding the knowledge, perceptions, and readiness (KPR) for telepharmacy in Indonesia. In this cross-sectional survey study, we assessed KPR and associated factors among Indonesian pharmacists, aiming to implement telepharmacy services in the future. Methods: Eligible participants were recruited from all provinces of Indonesia through a 24-item instrument. KPR scores were classified as low, moderate, and high. Sociodemographic characteristics and KPR of participants were summarized using descriptive statistics. Bivariate/multivariate ordinal logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify independent determinants of KPR. An adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated for each determinant. Results: A total of 6,059 pharmacists provided responses. Overall, 58.28% had a high knowledge score, and 63.51% expressed moderate perceptions toward telepharmacy services. Moreover, 70.21% showed a moderate level of readiness. Gender (male; AOR: 1.21 [95% CI: 1.06-1.39]), stable internet access (AOR: 0.75 [95% CI: 0.64-0.86]), and central region (AOR: 1.13 [95% CI: 0.99-1.29]) were significantly associated with perception toward telepharmacy. Readiness was significantly associated with age (17-25 years; AOR: 0.73 [95% CI: (0.60-0.89]), gender (male; AOR: 0.83 [95% CI: 0.72-0.95]), stable internet access (AOR: 0.75 [95% CI: 0.64-0.89]), education level (master/doctoral; AOR: 1.33 [95% CI: 1.06-1.67]), and central region (AOR: 1.29 [95% CI: 1.12-1.49]). Interestingly, knowledge levels were not significantly correlated with specific factors. Conclusions: Participants demonstrated high knowledge, without significant influencing factors. However, they showed moderate perceptions and readiness levels, influenced by sociodemographic factors, including gender, age, education level, internet access, and regional disparities. Therefore, targeted interventions (e.g., telepharmacy training and regional outreach) are imperative to enhancing perceptions and readiness, fostering the effective integration of telepharmacy services, and advancing pharmaceutical care in Indonesia.

Epilepsy patients’ satisfaction with pharmacist interventions: The impact of specialized pharmaceutical care services

Objectives: Patient satisfaction evaluations are necessary to understand patient needs and their impression of the services received. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of specialized pharmaceutical care (PC) services on epilepsy patients’ satisfaction with pharmacist interventions. Materials and Methods: An open, prospective, and longitudinal randomized controlled study was conducted among epilepsy patients recruited from two epilepsy referral centers in Nigeria. The patients were randomized into one of two study groups: Intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). Patients in the IG received specialized PC services in addition to the usual care offered at the hospitals. The effect of PC on patients’ satisfaction with pharmacists’ interventions was evaluated using a validated instrument. Data was analyzed using the IBM Statistical Products and Services Solutions version 25.0 with statistical significance set at P &lt; 0.05. Results: Patients in the CG had a significantly lower PC satisfaction score than those in the IG at three months and six months − pre-intervention: 2.505 vs. 2.559; t = −0.803; P = 0.423, three months: 2.483 vs. 3.811; t = −19.618; P = 0.0001, six months: 2.506 vs. 3.969; t = −24.393; P = 0.0001, indicating a significant improvement in patient satisfaction with PC services among those in the IG over time. Conclusion: Specialized PC services improve patients’ satisfaction with pharmacists’ interventions.

Enhancing medication management in hemodialysis patients: Exploring the impact of patient-centered pharmacist care and motivational interviewing.

Patients on hemodialysis (HD) often uses several medications, making them highly susceptible to medication-related problems (MRP) thereby leading to medication nonadherence. Therefore, an innovative pharmaceutical care strategy incorporating drug therapy optimization (DTO) and motivational interviewing (MI) can mitigate medication-related problems and optimize patient care. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of pharmacist led interventions in utilizing DTO and MI techniques in managing medication related problems among patients undergoing hemodialysis. A12-months, cross sectional prospective study was conducted among 63 End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients on HD. DTO was conducted by the pharmacist to identify the MRP by reviewing complete medication list gathered from patient interview and medical records. All MRPs was classified using the PCNE classification version 9.00 and medication issues, that require patient involvement were categorized as patient-related, while those that necessitate physician intervention were classified as physician-related. The DTO was performed at the baseline, 6-month and at the final month of the study. Identified medication issues were communicated to the site nephrologist and was tracked during next follow up. Whereas MI was conducted physically at Month-3 and via telephone on month-6 and month-9 to address patient related medication issues. Mean age of the study population was 48.5±14 years. While the mean number of prescribed medications was 8.1±2 with 57% of the patients taking more than 5 types of medication. After 12 months of pharmacist intervention using DTO and MI, a mean reduction in MRP was observed for both patient-related and physician-related MRPs across three time series. However, further analysis using repeated measure ANOVA revealed that the reduction in patient-related MRPs was statistically significant [F(1.491, 92.412) = 60.921, p < 0.05], while no statistically significant difference was detected in physician-related MRPs [F(2, 124) = 2.216, P = 0.113]. Pharmaceutical care service through DTO and MI can effectively reduce and prevent drug-related issues to optimize medication therapy among HD patients.

Current Perspectives, Practices, and Barriers Faced by Community Pharmacists Regarding Pharmaceutical Care Services for Diabetes Mellitus in the United Arab Emirates.

Providing accurate and sufficient information is a crucial requirement for delivering effective diabetes care, making it essential for community pharmacists to possess adequate knowledge of diabetes mellitus (DM) and its management. To investigate community pharmacists' level of expertise and engagement in providing counseling and health promotion services for individuals with DM in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A cross-sectional study design was used. The community Pharmacies were chosen via random sampling and researchers then conducted face-to-face interviews with them using the structured questionnaire. The questionnaire included demographic data, 14 questions on the knowledge and 9 questions about the practice concerning pharmaceutical care for Diabetes Mellitus. The average age ± SD was 31 ± 6.3. Of the total 516 community pharmacists recruited in the study, 37.2% (n=192) were male and 62.8% (n=324) were female. The average knowledge score about DM prevention and management was 9.7 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) [9.5, 9.9] and the average practice score about DM prevention and management was 7.1 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) [6.9, 7.2]. Better knowledge scores were observed in chief pharmacists (OR 1.29; 95% CI 1.08-1.56), pharmacists with 6-10 Years of experience (OR 6.92; 95% CI 3.43-8.86), pharmacist with > 10 years of experience (OR 1.99; 95% CI 1.67-2.36), when the number of patients the pharmacist serve is 5-10 (OR 1.27; 95% CI 1.06-1.53) and being trained on DM prevention and management (OR 2.18; 95% CI 1.92-2.47). Similarly, better practice scores were observed in older participants (OR1.02; 95% CI 1.001-1.03), chain pharmacies (OR 1.42; 95% CI 1.20-1.68), chief pharmacists (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.18-2.06), when the number of patients the pharmacists serve was 5-10 (OR 12.26; 95% CI 7.26-16.19), when the number of patients the pharmacists serve was 11-20 (OR 4.23; 95% CI 3.54-5.06) and being trained on DM prevention and management (OR 1.33; 95% CI 1.11-1.59). The most commonly reported barriers to providing counseling and health promotion services for diabetes mellitus (DM) in community pharmacies include a lack of coordination with other healthcare professionals (77%) and insufficient knowledge or clinical skills (68.7%). Our study revealed that community pharmacy staff members displayed a noteworthy level of involvement in providing pharmaceutical care services for patients with diabetes mellitus. Based on these findings, it is recommended to enhance pharmacy education by incorporating more advanced, evidence-based training and curricula focusing on disease management and appropriate therapies, particularly for diabetes.

Assessment of the Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception of Healthcare Providers Regarding Halal Pharmaceuticals

Background The intersection of religious beliefs and medical practices significantly impacts medication usage and patient adherence to treatment regimens. Emerging within this discourse is the concept of halal pharmaceuticals, emphasizing the alignment of therapeutic drugs with religious beliefs. Despite its importance, there is limited awareness among healthcare providers (HCPs) regarding their ingredients, standards, and manufacturing processes, particularly in the Middle East region. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) of HCPs concerning Halal pharmaceuticals, which are crucial for addressing the growing concerns among patients and consumers. Methods A cross-sectional survey involved diverse HCPs (physicians, pharmacists, and nurses) in Jordan. The survey encompassed demographic data, knowledge about Halal pharmaceuticals, attitudes, and perceptions. Descriptive statistics and inferential analyses were performed to examine the associations between demographic variables and KAP scores. Results A total of 381 HCPs participated in the study. While HCPs generally had a high level of knowledge, gaps existed, particularly concerning pharmaceutical composition and Halal alternatives. Attitudes and perceptions were mostly positive or neutral, though variations occurred among professions. Pharmacists exhibited significantly higher knowledge scores compared to physicians and nurses. Information sources included academic institutions, peers, religious and educational books, and online resources. Factors, such as age, marital status, religion, education type, insurance type, working place, and years of experience significantly influenced the KAP scores of participants. Conclusion Tailored educational interventions are critical for addressing knowledge gaps, fostering positive attitudes, and ensuring culturally sensitive healthcare related to Halal pharmaceuticals. Leveraging diverse information sources and tailoring education based on demographics can enhance understanding. Improved knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions enable HCPs to meet the needs of diverse patient populations and provide safe, Halal-compliant medications. Additionally, further research into the perspectives and willingness of patients to pay for Halal pharmaceuticals is essential to ensuring equitable access to pharmaceutical care services.

Improving medication dispensing and counselling for patients with vision impairment: a qualitative study of pharmacist-reported barriers and facilitators

BackgroundPeople with vision impairment encounter many difficulties when it comes to medicines use. However, evidence indicates that there are major gaps in pharmaceutical care service provision worldwide and limited research on interventions to optimise medication use for this patient population. The Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) provides a method for theoretically understanding individuals’ behaviour and informing development of interventions. The aim of this research was to (a) identify the barriers and facilitators to the provision of medication dispensing and counselling services by pharmacists to patients with vision impairment, and (b) identify key TDF domains to be targeted in a future intervention.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with pharmacists from different pharmacy practice settings/areas in Saudi Arabia. The 14-domain TDF was utilised as the theoretical lens through which pharmacists’ behaviours were examined. Interviews were conducted in Arabic or English, either face-to-face or over the telephone based on the participant’s preference. Following transcription, interviews conducted in Arabic were translated into English before analysis. Data analysis involved using the framework method and content analysis to identify important barriers and facilitators to the provision of dispensing and counselling services to those with vision impairment. Key TDF domains that could be targeted in a future intervention were then identified using a consensus-based approach.ResultsTwenty-six pharmacists were interviewed. Pharmacists’ experience in pharmacy practice ranged from two to 28 years. A range of barriers and facilitators were highlighted as important in providing services to those with vision impairment. Eight domains were identified as ‘key domains’ including: ‘Knowledge’, ‘Skills’, ‘Beliefs about capabilities’, ‘Goals’, ‘Memory, attention, and decision processes’, ‘Environmental context and resources’, ‘Social influences’, and ‘Behavioural regulation’.ConclusionsBarriers and facilitators identified by pharmacists will inform the development of an intervention to ensure its applicability to everyday practice. Future research will focus on the process of developing the proposed intervention through targeting key TDF domains to improve medication dispensing and counselling by pharmacists to patients with vision impairment.

Tripled likelihood: polypharmacy increases the occurrence of drug therapy problems in hospitalized pediatric patients.

A drug therapy problem (DTP) is any undesirable event experienced by a patient that accompanies drug therapy, prevents the patient from achieving their desired therapeutic goals, and requires expert judgment to resolve. Pediatric populations are at a higher risk of DTP than adults due to their immature organ systems, including the liver and kidneys, which play crucial roles in drug metabolism and excretion. Most previous studies have focused on only one element of DTP. Therefore, by considering all elements of DTP, we aimed to assess the prevalence of DTP and associated factors among pediatric patients admitted to the Wolaita Sodo University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among pediatric patients admitted to Wolaita Sodo University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital from 8 July 2020, to 7 July 2021. A simple random sampling technique was employed to select study participants. Cipolle's and Strand's classification method of drug therapy problems was used to identify and categorize DTP. Data were obtained by reviewing the patient's medical records using a data abstraction checklist, entered into Epi data version 4.6, and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of DTP. Medical records of 369 pediatric patients were reviewed, and the overall prevalence of DTP was 60.2% (95% CI:55.2%, 65.2%) with a total of 281 identified DTPs. Among them, 164 (74.2%) had only one DTP. Need additional drug therapy was the most common (140 [49.8%]) DTP identified. The number of disease conditions (AOR = 2.13, 95% CI:1.16, 3.92), polypharmacy (AOR = 3.01, 95% CI:1.70, 5.32), and duration of hospital stay (AOR = 1.80, 95% CI:1.04, 3.10) were independent predictors of DTP among admitted pediatric patients. The prevalence of DTP in pediatric patients in the current setting was high. The number of disease conditions, polypharmacy, and duration of hospital stay were independent predictors of DTP. Enhancements to pharmaceutical care services, optimized dosage practices, improved deprescribing by clinicians, and efficient, comprehensive diagnostic procedures have the potential to significantly reduce specific drug therapy problems in hospitalized pediatrics.

Seguimiento farmacoterapéutico a pacientes polimedicados

Professional pharmaceutical care services contribute to better health problem control, especially in polymedicated patients, and to the optimization of health resources, which leads to less medication prescription and fewer visits to healthcare centers. This study included 78 patients, with the female sex being the most prevalent, with an average age of 72.49 ± 13.92 years; of these, 60 patients were over 65 years of age and, herefore, considered geriatric patients. They were included in a personalized medication dispensing service and, subsequently, a pharmacotherapeutic follow-up was carried out. 450 medication-related problems were detected, the most frequent of which were associated with the patient: lack of knowledge of use, poor therapeutic adherence, administration errors, etc., with the probability of presenting them being higher in the male sex. Associated with these medication problems, 160 negative medication-related results were detected; only 5 of them were not resolved during the study phase, the most frequent being those of non-quantitative ineffectiveness, that is, those that are not resolved with a modification of the pharmacological dose but by including or eliminating other active ingredients. In conclusion, the personalized medication dispensing service requires a medication review, such as pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, as both allow the optimization of the treatment of polymedicated patients, as well as an increase in the control of health problems. From textbooks to online sources: An Investigation of drug information resource preference and utilization among healthcare Professionals

BackgroundProviding drug information (DI) is one of the essential pharmaceutical care services. Previous research has documented varying DI preferences and utilization practices among Healthcare Professionals (HCPs). This study aimed to determine the preference and utilization of DI resources among HCPs and identify the main barriers that impede their ability to utilize them. MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted in selected government, private hospitals, and primary healthcare clinics. A thirteen-item survey instrument was developed to assess the utilization, accessibility, preferences, and satisfaction with various DI resources and barriers. HCPs meeting the inclusion criteria were identified and contacted. The collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 27. Results311 responses were considered for the final analysis. Most HCPs who contributed to this survey were pharmacists, nurses, and physicians. Google was the most frequently used reference resource, at 64.3% (n = 200), followed by other subscription-based databases at 36% (n = 112) and package inserts at 30.5% (n = 95). UpToDate was the most commonly used database, i.e., 42.1% (n = 131) (RII = 0.749196). Treatment was the most common category of DI, and 69.8% (n = 217) searched (RII = 0.899517). Lack of time, 46% (n = 201), was the most limiting factor for seeking DI. Variables such as work experience, practice setting, education level, and continuing medical education hours were the significant (p < 0.05) predictors of some DI utilization components and preferences. ConclusionThis study shows differences in preference and utilization of drug information resources (DIR) by HCPs, depending upon their clinical practice and background. Therefore, educational strategies are needed to empower HCPs about DIR.

Assessment of knowledge, attitude, perception towards pharmacy practice regulations 2015 among community pharmacists in Mangalore

The Pharmacy Practice Regulations of 2015 were formulated to standardize and enhance pharmacy practices in India. Community pharmacy professionals globally are taking on expanded roles in patient care and health promotion. However, some lack awareness of recommended pharmaceutical care services in new regulations. This knowledge gap poses risks of medication errors and serious consequences, even patient fatalities. To address this, it's crucial to provide ongoing education, enhance communication, integrate technology, ensure regulatory compliance, and establish effective feedback mechanisms within pharmacies. These measures aim to improve knowledge, compliance, and, ultimately, patient safety. This study, conducted in Mangalore over a period of approximately 2.5 months, is a community-based cross-sectional study with a sample size of 100 participants. It included community pharmacists working in Mangalore. Knowledge of community pharmacists were analysed and it was found that out of 100 participants only 18% were aware, 60% were not aware and 22% were not sure about the PPR,2015. In this study, 42% of participants were not aware of the duties outlined in PPR,2015. Among the surveyed pharmacists, 55% believed that adhering to Pharmacy Practice Regulations was essential for improving patient healthcare. In contrast, 20% held the opinion that following these regulations was unnecessary, while 28% expressed uncertainty on the matter. Mandating minimum education level for working in community pharmacies should be implemented. Practicing pharmacists should be encouraged to update their knowledge by attending continuous education programmes. The morals and responsibilities of community pharmacists should be continuously reminded to the pharmacists.

Perception, attitude and stigma of community pharmacists toward patients with mental disorders: a cross-sectional study

One of the potential barriers to providing pharmaceutical care services to patients with mental disorders is stigma. Therefore, this study aims to explore the perception, attitude and stigma of community pharmacists toward patients with mental disorders in Indonesia. A self-report questionnaire was used including a convenience sample of 1,878 Indonesian community pharmacists from January to March 2023. The regression analyses showed that the perception in confidence level was significantly affected by age (95% CL :0.468-0.851; p-value:0.003) and work experience (95% CL: 1.205-2.284; p-value :0.002). Furthermore, age also affected the attitude of the community pharmacists towards patients with mental disorders (95% CL: 0.705-0.985; p-value: 0.033). Gender and a history of mental illness in a family member or a close friend contributed significantly to social distance (95% CL: 0.584-0.937; p-value: 0.013 and 95% CL: 1.212-1.779; p-value: &lt;0.001, respectively). However, the self-disclosure of pharmacists about mental disorders remained unfavourable. In conclusion, this study found that majority of respondents had good perception and a low level of stigma towards patients with mental disorders. Based on the results, the continuous promotion of mental health awareness and education is recommended. In addition, sharing the personal experiences of individuals with mental disorders is essential for reducing self-stigma. Further studies are required to support service development in this field.

Empowerment Provided by Health Education and its Impact on Self-care: Report of a Pharmaceutical Intervention

Aims: Older people, due to the development of multiple morbidities and in a situation of polypharmacy, become fragile in addition to their own physical and organic aging. For different reasons regarding the treatment, the health care provided, or the physical and mental condition of older people, problems of adherence to pharmacotherapy are present. Pharmaceutical care is an important practice to ensure rational pharmacotherapy for this population. The present study aims to describe the report of pharmacotherapeutic follow-up to a hospitalized older individual with multimorbidity and use of polypharmacy and to highlight an intervention aimed at adherence to pharmacotherapy. Case presentation: This is the planning of a strategy, aimed at promoting health education, which was carried out during the hospital stay of an older person who was included in the institution's pharmaceutical care services. In addition, at hospital discharge, in order to ensure greater benefits, a bag was made for the correct storage of medicines and a descriptive didactic list on how to use them. In this way, improvements were achieved in the transition of care for this patient. Conclusion: The importance of developing techniques that promote adherence to pharmacotherapy, especially for fragile populations, such as older people with multiple diseases, and using polypharmacy is suggested. Individualized educational interventions are instructive measures that can contribute to people's autonomy in their self-care.

Needs assessment for pharmacy program creation designed to serve minority Francophone populations in Canada

ObjectivesCurrent literature provides little insight into the need for French language pharmaceutical-services in Francophone minority settings in Canada. This study aims to understand the pharmaceutical care and services offered in French in Canada. It also aims to conduct a needs assessment in the context of curriculum development, by validating whether pharmaceutical needs are being met in Francophone minority settings in Canada. MethodsAn online survey was sent to community members and healthcare professionals. Respondents were asked to identify the perceived importance of pharmaceutical needs, and the degree to which they perceive these to be fulfilled in French and in English in their communities. Results113 community members and 109 healthcare professionals completed the survey. Most respondents were from Ontario (64.84%), Quebec (10.50%) or Atlantic provinces (10.05%). >95% of survey respondents identified that pharmaceutical needs assessed were of very high importance. The rate of pharmaceutical need fulfillment was lower in French than English across all pharmaceutical needs assessed. The greatest difference in rate of pharmaceutical need fulfillment was seen with "Having safe access to required medication". The perception of pharmaceutical needs being met was congruent between community members and healthcare professionals. ConclusionThese results confirm a lack of pharmaceutical needs being met in French in Canadian Francophone minority communities. There is a lack of French language services that limits the ability to receive care in one's own language. Pharmacy education in French may be an effective approach to improve pharmaceutical care services received in French in francophone minority communities.

Telepharmacy Implementation to Support Pharmaceutical Care Services during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Scoping Review.

Telepharmacy was effectively applied for remote pharmaceutical care during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine the implementation of telepharmacy services to support pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care during the pandemic. Seven electronic databases were searched from inception to June 2021: PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Excerpta Medica database (Embase), Web of Science, Proquest, Scopus, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered with the PROSPERO registry of systematic reviews. Reports of original research investigating the implementation of telepharmacy during the COVID-19 pandemic were retrieved. Researchers screened the title and abstract of each article, and then evaluated the full text of eligible articles to identify studies that met the inclusion criteria. Pharmacists' responsibilities and actions were classified in relation to the International Pharmaceutical Federation guideline for managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Extracted data included study characteristics, pharmacists' interventions delivered through a telepharmacy system, and the benefits of telepharmacy implementation. The database search yielded 1400 articles. After removal of duplicates and articles not meeting the specific inclusion criteria (n = 1381), a total of 19 relevant original research articles were reviewed. According to these studies, telepharmacy was used to perform remote medication review and optimization, assess medication adherence, dispense and deliver medications, educate and counsel patients, promote disease prevention, collaborate with health care providers, and monitor treatment outcomes. This study highlighted the use of telepharmacy services to support pharmacists' activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Randomized clinical trials are needed to investigate the long-term efficacy and cost-effectiveness of telepharmacy services.
