Multivariate analysis of carcinogenic equivalence (CEQ) to characterize carcinogenic VOC emissions in a typical petrochemical industrial park in Taiwan

Large industrial emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the petrochemical industry are a critical concern due to their potential carcinogenicity. VOC emissions vary in composition depending on the source and occur in mixtures containing compounds with varying degrees of toxicity. We proposed the use of carcinogenic equivalence (CEQ) and multivariate analysis to identify the major contributors to the carcinogenicity of VOC emissions. This method weights the carcinogenicity of each VOC by using a ratio of its cancer slope factor to that of benzene, providing a carcinogenic equivalence factor (CEF) for each VOC. We strategically selected a petrochemical industrial park in southern Taiwan that embodies the industry's comprehensive nature and serves as a representative example. The CEQs of different emission sources in three years were analyzed and assessed using principal component analysis (PCA) to characterize the major contributing sectors, vendors, sources, and species for the carcinogenicity of VOC emissions. Results showed that while the study site exhibited a 20.7 % (259.8 t) decrease in total VOC emissions in three years, the total CEQ emission only decreased by 4.5 % (15.9 t), highlighting a potential shift in the emitted VOC composition towards more carcinogenic compounds. By calculating CEQ followed by PCA, the important carcinogenic VOC emission sources and key compounds were identified. More importantly, the study compared three approaches: CEQ followed by PCA, PCA followed by CEQ, and PCA only. While the latter two methods prioritized sources based on emission quantities, potentially overlooking less abundant but highly carcinogenic compounds, the CEQ-first approach effectively identified vendors and sources with the most concerning cancer risks. This distinction underscores the importance of selecting the appropriate analysis method based on the desired focus. Our study highlighted how prioritizing CEQ within the analysis framework empowered the development of precise control measures that address the most carcinogenic VOC sources.

Significance of Volatile Organic Compounds to Secondary Pollution Formation and Health Risks Observed during a Summer Campaign in an Industrial Urban Area.

The chemical complexity and toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are primarily encountered through intensive anthropogenic emissions in suburban areas. Here, pollution characteristics, impacts on secondary pollution formation, and health risks were investigated through continuous in-field measurements from 1-30 June 2020 in suburban Nanjing, adjacent to national petrochemical industrial parks in China. On average, the total VOCs concentration was 34.47 ± 16.08 ppb, which was comprised mostly by alkanes (41.8%) and halogenated hydrocarbons (29.4%). In contrast, aromatics (17.4%) dominated the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) with 59.6% and 58.3%, respectively. Approximately 63.5% of VOCs were emitted from the petrochemical industry and from solvent usage based on source apportionment results, followed by biogenic emissions of 22.3% and vehicle emissions of 14.2%. Of the observed 46 VOC species, hexachlorobutadiene, dibromoethane, butadiene, tetrachloroethane, and vinyl chloride contributed as high as 98.8% of total carcinogenic risk, a large fraction of which was ascribed to the high-level emissions during ozone pollution episodes and nighttime. Therefore, the mitigation of VOC emissions from petrochemical industries would be an effective way to reduce secondary pollution and potential health risks in conurbation areas.

Different VOC species derived from fugitive emissions at various altitudes around petrochemical plant

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from fugitive sources are crucial for environmental and health risk assessments. However, monitoring these emissions at ground level, according to traditional technical specifications, has made it challenging to identify polluted air masses and collect purposeful samples. In this study, we focused on utilizing an unmanned aerial vehicle system to obtain air samples around a petrochemical industrial park. We conducted a quantitative analysis of 108 VOC species and compared the results between aerial and ground-level samples. The findings indicated a higher presence of reactive compounds in the aerial samples. The sample pairs exhibited relatively homogeneous compositions of hydrocarbons with fewer than eight carbon atoms, suggesting a well-mixed condition for light compounds. Conversely, the aerial samples exclusively exhibited high mixing ratios of C8–C15 compounds, including branched paraffins and aldehydes. Based on the quantified VOCs, we evaluated the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAP). The results highlighted aldehydes, alkenes, and aromatics, particularly propanal, 2-butene, m/p-xylene, and benzaldehyde, as priority control compounds. Additionally, the semiquantitative concentrations of these non-quantitative C8–C15 species ranged from 1 to 15 ppbv, with a total content exceeding 150 ppbv, it indicated the significant contribution to ambient secondary pollution. These results provide valuable insights into the identification of potential emission sources and the assessment of environmental repercussions attributed to these intermediate-volatile organic compounds from fugitive emissions around petrochemical plant.

Methodology for probabilistic tsunami-triggered oil spill fire hazard assessment based on Natech cascading disaster modeling

A novel modeling methodology is presented for cascading disasters triggered by tsunami hazards considering uncertainties. The proposed methodology focuses on tsunami-triggered oil spills and subsequent fires, a type of natural hazard-triggered technological (Natech) event. The methodology numerically simulates the time-varying behavior of tsunami-triggered oil spill fires for numerous stochastically generated scenarios and performs a probabilistic mapping of the maximum radiative heat flux as a quantitative measure of the fire hazard. To enable these assessments, probabilistic tsunami hazard assessments are extended to include the tsunami-induced movement of oil storage tanks, resulting oil spills, tsunami-driven oil fire spread, and thermal radiation from fires. The uncertainty of the earthquake fault slip distribution, oil filling level of storage tanks, and fire starting time and position is incorporated into the new assessments. To demonstrate the methodology, a realistic case study is conducted for a coastal petrochemical industrial park in Japan conditioned on possible offshore moment magnitude 9.1 earthquakes. Contrary to typical tsunami direct impact assessments, the results highlight the cascading effects of tsunamis and large variability in key output variables concerning oil spills and fires. This indicates that the methodology is useful for deepening stakeholders’ understanding of tsunami-triggered cascading disasters and improving risk reduction plans.

Explainable AI-driven net-zero carbon roadmap for petrochemical industry considering stochastic scenarios of remotely sensed offshore wind energy

Recently, several countries have focused on industrial decarbonization to ensure that the net emissions of carbon dioxide reach zero and contribute to decreasing the global mean temperature. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of a net-zero carbon roadmap for the petrochemical industry by 1) developing an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)-based generative model to produce stochastic scenarios for offshore wind power in an electrical grid, and 2) conducting techno-economic and environmental assessments for forecasting models that define offshore wind power networks. Firstly, data processing techniques were utilized on remotely sensed offshore wind speed datasets and energy data obtained from petrochemical industrial parks. Second, a generative model was designed using a variational autoencoder (VAE) to produce different forecast scenarios of offshore wind power. Third, stochastic scenarios were developed by considering behavioral characteristics of offshore wind power with stochastic scenario uncertainties. Finally, we investigated the techno-economic and environmental assessments of the proposed renewable energy networks. Comparing to the case of offshore wind power in 2022, The proposed XAI-driven net-zero carbon roadmap indicated that the total cost of electricity generation and fossil fuel cost with carbon capture and storage (CCS) can be reduced by 4% and 42% with 41% reduction of CO2 emission. Ultimately, this may be implemented in industrial parks to aid in efforts towards carbon neutrality.

Heterologous spatial distribution of soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the primary influencing factors in three industrial parks

Soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) generated from industrial processes are highly spatially heterologous, with limited quantitative studies on their main influencing factors. The present study evaluated the soil PAHs in three types of industrial parks (a petrochemical industrial park, a brominated flame retardant manufacturing park, and an e-waste dismantling park) and their surroundings. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs in the parks were 340–2.43 × 103, 26.2–2.63 × 103, and 394–2.01 × 104 ng/g, which were significantly higher than those in the surrounding areas by 1–2 orders of magnitude, respectively. The highest soil PAH contamination was observed in the e-waste dismantling park. Nap can be considered as characteristic pollutant in the petrochemical industrial park, while Phe in the flame retardant manufacturing park and e-waste dismantling park. Low molecular weight PAHs (2–3 rings) predominated in the petrochemical industrial park (73.0%) and the surrounding area of brominated flame retardant manufacturing park (80.3%). However, high molecular weight PAHs (4–6 rings) were enriched in the other sampling sites, indicating distinct sources and determinants of soil PAHs. Source apportionment results suggested that PAHs in the parks were mainly derived from the leakage of petroleum products in the petroleum manufacturing process and pyrolysis or combustion of fossil fuels. Contrarily, the PAHs in the surrounding areas could have been derived from the historical coal combustion and traffic emissions. Source emissions, wind direction, and local topography influenced the PAH spatial distributions.

Chemical makers eye carbon capture in China

ExxonMobil, Shell, and CNOOC say they will evaluate a project to capture and store carbon at China’s Dayawan Petrochemical Industrial Park. Shell and CNOOC operate a petrochemical joint venture in the park, and ExxonMobil plans to build a large chemical plant there. ExxonMobil says the effort could capture up to 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year and support China’s ambition of carbon neutrality by 2060. “The project could also serve as a model for the chemical industry as one of the first petrochemical projects to be decarbonized,” the firm says.

Identification of specific halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface soils of petrochemical, flame retardant, and electronic waste dismantling industrial parks

Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) have received tremendous attention due to their high toxicity. To identify the emission pattern of Cl/Br-PAHs from various industrial productions, understand the formation mechanisms and the influence on the surroundings, this study investigated the surface soils of three typical industrial parks. Generally, traces of Cl-PAHs were much lower than Br-PAHs. The mean Cl-PAH concentrations followed the trend of petrochemical industrial park (3.12 ng/g), brominated flame retardant (BFR) manufacturing park (1.48 ng/g), and electronic waste dismantling park (0.26 ng/g). However, the BFR manufacturing park had the highest mean Br-PAH concentration (21.6 ng/g), significantly higher than the other two parks. Generally, higher levels of the chemicals were found in the parks than in their surroundings, except for the electronic waste dismantling park. The massive addition of chlorine additives in crude oil and its by-products, plus the enormous quantity of brominated brines used in BFR productions, favor Cl/Br-PAH formation. Analyzing the homolog compositions of Cl/Br-PAHs suggested that 3- or 4-ring Cl/Br-PAHs were typically come from the petrochemical industrial park and electronic waste dismantling park. Contrarily, 4- or 5-ring Cl/Br-PAHs were predominantly come from the BFR manufacturing activity. This study provides fingerprints to trace the Cl/Br-PAH emissions during industrial production and analyzes the formation mechanism.

Research on Spatial Planning of Petrochemical Industrial Parks from the Perspective of Symbiosis: Example of Yueyang Green Chemical Industry Park

As a practical exploration of industry ecologicalization, ecoindustrial parks (EIP) serve as an effective approach to sustainable development. Different from western industrialized countries, China is accelerating its industrialization, and the philosophy of symbiosis is embodied more in the requirements of economy and environmental protection in the production process than in the long-term social and environmental mutual construction. EIPs are a regional system consisting of nature, industry, and society, and the key to achieve industrial symbiosis is systematically allocating resources for industry, city, and people through planning. Based on engineering practice, the authors selected the special space of China Yueyang Petrochemical Industrial Park as the object of discussion, addressing the main problems and challenges facing its development, and focusing on the relationship between industrial symbiosis and spatial symbiosis. From the analysis of the current situation, the circular symbiotic industrial chain network, and the layout of the symbiotic park are included in the spatial planning of the industrial park.

Volatile Organic Compound Emission Characteristics and Influences Assessment of a Petrochemical Industrial Park in the Pearl River Delta Region

The petrochemical industry is one of the major emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the current studies have mostly focused on the identification of the chemical characteristics of non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) VOCs species from the petroleum refining sub-sector. Research on the characteristics of VOCs components in oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) species and other important sub-sectors is still lacking. Therefore, eight enterprises at a petrochemical industrial park in the Pearl River Delta region were carefully selected to represent three major subsectors, namely petroleum refining, synthetic materials, and organic chemicals, for the petrochemical industry. The VOCs (including 22 OVOCs species) from stack emissions and fugitive emissions, as well as nearby sensitive sites, were sampled, and the source reactivity (SR), the thresholds of malodor, and the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were assessed. The main results were as follows:① the VOCs concentrations of the stack emissions from the petrochemical industrial park were between 0.2-46.3 mg·m-3. The VOCs species were greatly affected by the type of after-treatment technology. A major VOC species emitted from the combustion-based after treatments was formaldehyde, whereas the species emitted from the non-combustion-based equipment were acetone, 1,3-butadiene, acrylic, and isobutane. ② The fugitive VOCs emissions from the petroleum storage tank area were dominated by alkanes, whereas the other fugitive emission sites and the sensitive sites were dominated by OVOCs such as acetone, formaldehyde, and ethyl acetate. ③ The SRs were mainly contributed by OVOCs, aromatics, and olefins, with average proportions of 43.1%, 24.2%, and 21.1%, respectively, with the major species being formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, m/p-xylene, ethylene, and toluene. ④ The malodor appeared both in fugitive emission areas and the sensitive sites. The main odor components were OVOCs such as n-butyraldehyde, propionaldehyde, hexanal, and valeraldehyde. ⑤ The non-carcinogenic risks occurred in the fugitive emission areas and the sensitive sites of resin, alcohol, and aldehyde production, which were mainly caused by OVOCs such as free acetaldehyde, acrolein, and propionaldehyde. No carcinogenic risk was found in any of the sampled sites. This research can provide scientific support for the formulation of priority VOCs species-based precise control strategies in petrochemical industrial parks.

Total Site Hydrogen Integration with fresh hydrogen of multiple quality and waste hydrogen recovery in refineries

This paper proposes a novel method combining Pinch Methodology and waste hydrogen recovery, aiming to minimise fresh hydrogen consumption and waste hydrogen discharge. The method of multiple-level resource Pinch Analysis is extended to the level of Total Site Hydrogen Integration by considering fresh hydrogen sources with various quality. Waste hydrogen after Total Site Integration is further regenerated. The technical feasibility and economy of the various purification approaches are considered, demonstrated with a case study of a refinery hydrogen network in a petrochemical industrial park. The results showed that fresh hydrogen usage and waste hydrogen discharge could be reduced by 21.3% and 67.6%. The hydrogen recovery ratio is 95.2%. It has significant economic benefits and a short payback period for Total Site Hydrogen Integration with waste hydrogen purification. The proposed method facilitates the reuse of waste hydrogen before the purification process that incurs an additional environmental footprint. In line with the Circular Economy principles, hydrogen resource is retained in the system as long as possible before discharge.

An integrated strategy by using long-term monitoring data to identify volatile organic compounds of high concern near petrochemical industrial parks

Exposure to ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is associated with a risk of cancer in the residents living near petrochemical facilities. However, research on the contribution of different VOCs to the lifetime cancer risk remains inconclusive. The variability in source emissions, geographical locations, seasons, and meteorological conditions can be assessed through long-term measurement of ambient VOCs with a wide spatial distribution, thus reducing the uncertainty of health risk assessment from source emissions. This study analyzed comprehensive measurement data of 109 VOCs at 17 monitoring stations around petrochemical industrial parks, collected once every six days during 2015–2018 by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Agency. We calculated the annual mean concentration of selected VOCs and then integrated the probability risk assessment (PRA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) models to identify the sources of VOCs of high concern. First, we prioritized 12 out of 23 carcinogenic VOCs based on the PRA results. Further, the results obtained from the PMF model revealed that petrochemical industrial parks contributed to more than 50% of the emissions of six VOCs, namely 1,3-butadiene, benzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, chloroform, vinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile, measured at a few monitoring stations. This integrated approach can help regulatory agencies to efficiently propose control strategies on the emissions of VOCs of high concern, thereby reducing the population's health risk.

Proximity to petrochemical industrial parks and risk of chronic glomerulonephritis

This study determined whether individuals residing near petrochemical industrial parks (PIPs) have a higher risk of chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN). We performed population-based 1:4 case–control study by using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database from 2000 to 2016. The subjects were aged 20–65 years, residing in western Taiwan, and did not have a history of any renal or urinary system disease in 2000. The case cohort included those who had at least three outpatient visits or one hospitalization between 2001 and 2016 with codes for CGN as per International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-Ninth and Tenth Revisions. Controls were randomly sampled age-, sex-, and urbanization-matched individuals without renal and urinary system diseases. Petrochemical exposure was evaluated by the distance to the nearest PIP of the residential township, and petrochemical exposure probability was examined considering the monthly prevailing wind direction. Conditional logistic regression was used to determine the association between petrochemical exposure and CGN risk. A total of 320,935 subjects were included in the final analysis (64,187 cases and 256,748 controls). After adjustment for potential confounders, living in townships within a 3-km radius of PIPs was associated with a higher risk of CGN (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.28–1.37). Compared with townships more than 20 km away from PIPs, those within 10 km of PIPs were associated with significantly increased risks of CGN in a dose-dependent manner. When prevailing wind was considered, townships with high exposure probability were associated with a significantly increased risk of CGN. We found that those residing near PIPs or with high petrochemical exposure probability had a higher risk of CGN. These findings highlight the need for monitoring environmental nephrotoxic substances and the renal health of residents living near PIPs.

O3 Source Characteristics of an Industrial Area in the Yangtze River Delta Based on Boundary Observations

To study the characteristics of ozone sources in a petrochemical industrial park in Shanghai, O3 and its precursors were synchronously and continuously measured for 3 months(June-August 2020) alongside meteorological parameters using an online monitoring system. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality(TCEQ) method and principal component analysis(PCA) were used to study the contribution of regional background and local O3 concentrations in the industrial zone, the results of which were compared. The results indicated that:① During the observation period, the dominant wind directions in the park were southeast and east, and the average temperature was 27.12℃. The daily average ρ(VOCs-36), ρ(NOx), and ρ(O3) was 32.05-240.51, 10.15-47.51, and 31.81-144.43μg·m-3, respectively. Alkanes are the most abundant of 36 VOCs; ② The regional background concentrations based on the TCEQ method ranged from 32.63 to 191.13μg·m-3, and the local concentrations ranged from 16.08 to 134.25 μg·m-3. The percentage contribution of the regional background ranged from 32.6% to 87.7%. The PCA analysis showed that the regional background concentrations ranged from 66.3 to 219.83μg·m-3; ③ The variations in local O3 concentrations based on the TCEQ analysis broadly correspond to the variations in ozone formation potential in the park. The two analysis methods were consistent, verifying that the results are reliable; and ④ After eliminating the calculation error caused by the abnormal concentrations recorded at some stations, the proportion of background O3 in the region was generally within the range 75%-95% during the observation period. Overall, regional transport was the main source of O3 in the industrial park, and O3 pollution in the surrounding cities should be the focus of pollution control alongside joint prevention and control measures in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Proximity to petrochemical industry and risk of childhood asthma occurrence

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Petrochemical industrial complexes would emission s several pollutants that were associated with adverse effect in respiratory system. Aim of present study is using different surrogate indices of petrochemical exposure to evaluate the effect on childhood asthma. METHODS: We conducted a singleton birth cohort by using the 2000-2014 Taiwan Birth Certificate Database (TBCD), linked with Nation Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) for follow-up. The distance to the nearest petrochemical industrial parks (PIPs) and benzene exposure level were uses as surrogating petrochemical exposure indices. Exposure windows were divided into prenatal and postnatal periods. The Cox proportional hazard models were applied to evaluate the effects. RESULTS:In total, 227601 asthma cases were newly diagnosed until to 2016/12/31. Younger maternal age and greater proportions of male, preterm birth, low birth weight, delivery by Caesarean section, maternal gestational hypertension were observed for asthma children than non-asthma children. The results showed that compared with those living in the farthest, living close to PIPs (HR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.65–1.70, for 10 km vs. ≥ 40 km) were observed to have an increased risk of asthma occurrence. Higher benzene exposure levels during prenatal or postnatal period having higher risks of asthma were also found. CONCLUSIONS:In present study, we found living near PIPs and exposure to higher level of benzene during prenatal or postnatal period would increase the risk of childhood asthma occurrence. Characterization of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Using Mobile Monitoring Around the Industrial Parks in the Yangzte River Delta Region of China

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play important roles in the formation of ozone and fine particles in the troposphere. Industrial parks emit significant amounts of VOCs in China, while few studies have characterized them. In the present study, a mobile platform was employed to measure the levels and composition VOCs around industrial parks in the Yangzte River Delta region. The average concentration of VOCs ranged from 39 μg·m-3 (5% percentile) to 533 μg·m-3 (95% percentile) with an average of 183 μg·m-3, which was three times that of ambient concentrations. Maximum VOC concentrations ranged from 307 μg·m-3 (5% percentile) to 12006 μg·m-3 (95% percentile) with an average of 2812 μg·m-3. The frequency of abnormal peak values was as high as 64% across all the industrial parks, of which toluene (32%), xylene (18%), benzene (9%), and>C9 aromatics (19%) were the most common species. Differences in VOC characteristics were observed among the different types of industrial parks. Specifically, highest concentrations of VOCs were observed in textile industrial parks followed by chemical, painting, and petrochemical industrial parks, and VOC concentrations in electronics industrial parks were the lowest. Importantly, species measured using the mobile platform only contributed~50% of VOCs present in ambient samples, indicating that the concentrations of VOCs in the industrial parks were underestimated overall. These results can inform measures to control VOC pollution in industrial parks in China.

Air pollution diffusion simulation and seasonal spatial risk analysis for industrial areas

The petrochemical industry produces many air pollutants during production, such as airborne particulate matters (PM10 and PM2.5), sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, carbon oxides, etc. Petrochemical industrial accidents are more likely to cause major air pollution hazards in a short period. Therefore this study simulated diffusion and performed air pollution spatial risk analysis for potential air pollutants generated by the petrochemical industry using meteorological observation data from 2017 to 2019. The study targets were No. 6 Naphtha Cracker Complex Petrochemical Industrial Park (6NCC) of Formosa Petrochemical Corporation and Taichung Thermal Power Plant (TTPP) in central Taiwan. We used the industrial source complex model short term (ISCST3) air simulation model developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency to simulate pollutant diffusion under different weather conditions and seasons. Air pollution spatial risk was investigated for neighboring hospitals and schools for pollutant emission and diffusion to provide feedback to petrochemical related industry's risk management.Emission areas (6NCC and TTPP) were all in the southwest since the main air pollution accumulation and diffusion is to the northeast during monsoon season (October through March). Air pollution April through September each year is more evenly distributed, with pollutant concentrations low in all directions, approximately half the concentration in winter. Simulated air pollutant concentrations often overlapped with high risk population clusters (schools and hospitals). 6NCC posed little impact on nearby schools throughout the year; whereas TTPP posed relatively low risks to nearby schools and hospitals in summer, with slightly higher risk for Shenren Elementary School in Shengang township, Changhua County in winter. Overall 6NCC posed higher risk for Mailiao and Taixi townships in Yunlin County; whereas the TTPP posed higher risk on Longjing District of Taichung City, Shengang and Xianxi townships in Changhua County, particularly during winter. The results of this study will help the petrochemical industry and public health authority to wider manage air pollution risks.

Maternal proximity to petrochemical industrial parks and risk of premature rupture of membranes

BackgroundLiving near petrochemical industries has been reported to increase the risks of adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm delivery. However, evidence regarding the role of petrochemical exposure in pregnancy complications remains limited. This study evaluated the association between maternal proximity to petrochemical industrial parks (PIPs) during pregnancy and the occurrence of premature rupture of membranes (PROM). MethodsWe performed a population-based 1:3 case–control study by using the 2004–2014 Taiwanese Birth Certificate Database. Birth records reported as stillbirth or bearing congenital anomalies were excluded. Cases were newborns reported to have PROM, whereas controls were randomly sampled from those without any pregnancy complications by matching birth year and urbanization index of the residential township. The proximity to PIPs was evaluated by calculating the distance to the nearest PIP of the maternal residential township during pregnancy. Furthermore, petrochemical exposure opportunity, accounting for monthly prevailing wind direction, was quantified during the entire gestational period. We applied conditional logistic regression models to evaluate the associations. ResultsIn total, 29371 PROM cases were reported during the study period, with a corresponding 88113 healthy controls sampled. The results revealed that living within a 3-km radius of PIPs during pregnancy would increase the risk of PROM (odds ratio [OR] = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.66–1.87). Furthermore, compared with the lowest exposed group, those with high petrochemical exposure opportunity had a significantly increased risk of PROM occurrence (OR = 1.69–1.75). The adverse effects remained robust in the subgroup analysis for both term- and preterm-PROM. ConclusionsThe results of the present work provide evidence that living near PIPs during pregnancy would increase the risk of PROM, and additional studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Investigation of health risk assessment and odor pollution of volatile organic compounds from industrial activities in the Yangtze River Delta region, China

To investigate composition characteristics and assess occupational health risks and odor pollution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial activities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China, one-year field measurements of VOCs were conducted simultaneously at an iron and steel industrial park (ISP), one chemical industrial park (CMP) and one petrochemical industrial park (PCP) from September, 2018 to August, 2019. The concentrations of VOCs were 80.2 ± 67.9 ppbv, 28.1 ± 27.2 ppbv and 144 ± 378 ppbv for ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Aromatics, alkanes and alkenes were the major components of VOCs at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Moreover, the toluene to benzene ratios were 0.330 ± 0.302, 4.31 ± 6.48 and 1.84 ± 3.34, which generally showed the characteristics of combustion source for ISP, industrial activities for CMP and petrochemical industry for PCP, respectively. The hazard index values were 0.752 ± 0.438, 0.108 ± 0.248 and 0.090 ± 0.260 at ISP, CMP and PCP, which were generally lower than threshold limit value, suggesting a low noncarcinogenic risk for workers. Meanwhile, the 95th percentile LCR values of VOCs were 8.76 × 10−5, 1.15 × 10−5 and 1.00 × 10−5 at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively, which were also under acceptable risk level, indicating a low carcinogenic risk. Benzene and 1,3-butadiene were main harmful substances for both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of VOCs. The odor levels of VOCs were 2.12 ± 4.21, 12.5 ± 28.7 and 1.01 ± 7.84 at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Aromatics for ISP and sulfide compounds for CMP and PCP were primary pollutants for odor pollution. This work could improve the understanding of risk levels and odor characteristics of VOCs and benefit policy development on alleviating odor complaints and health risks for workers in YRD region, China.
