Machine learning guided prediction of warfarin blood levels for personalized medicine based on clinical longitudinal data from cardiac surgery patients: a prospective observational study.

Warfarin is a common oral anticoagulant, and its effects vary widely among individuals. Numerous dose-prediction algorithms have been reported based on cross-sectional data generated via multiple linear regression or machine learning. This study aimed to construct an information fusion perturbation theory and machine learning prediction model of warfarin blood levels based on clinical longitudinal data from cardiac surgery patients. The data of 246 patients were obtained from electronic medical records. Continuous variables were processed by calculating the distance of the raw data with the moving average (MA ∆vki(sj)), and categorical variables in different attribute groups were processed using Euclidean distance (ED ǁ∆vk(sj)ǁ). Regression and classification analyses were performed on the raw data, MA ∆vki(sj), and ED ǁ∆vk(sj)ǁ. Different machine-learning algorithms were chosen for the STATISTICA and WEKA software. The random forest (RF) algorithm was the best for predicting continuous outputs using the raw data. The correlation coefficients of the RF algorithm were 0.978 and 0.595 for the training and validation sets, respectively, and the mean absolute errors were 0.135 and 0.362 for the training and validation sets, respectively. The proportion of ideal predictions of the RF algorithm was 59.0%. General discriminant analysis (GDA) was the best algorithm for predicting the categorical outputs using the MA ∆vki(sj) data. The GDA algorithm's total true positive rate (TPR) was 95.4% and 95.6% for the training and validation sets, respectively, with MA ∆vki(sj) data. An information fusion perturbation theory and machine learning model for predicting warfarin blood levels was established. A model based on the RF algorithm could be used to predict the target international normalized ratio (INR), and a model based on the GDA algorithm could be used to predict the probability of being within the target INR range under different clinical scenarios.

Bi-Solitons on the Surface of a Deep Fluid: An Inverse Scattering Transform Perspective Based on Perturbation Theory.

We investigate theoretically and numerically the dynamics of long-living oscillating coherent structures-bi-solitons-in the exact and approximate models for waves on the free surface of deep water. We generate numerically the bi-solitons of the approximate Dyachenko-Zakharov equation and fully nonlinear equations propagating without significant loss of energy for hundreds of the structure oscillation periods, which is hundreds of thousands of characteristic periods of the surface waves. To elucidate the long-living bi-soliton complex nature we apply an analytical-numerical approach based on the perturbation theory and the inverse scattering transform (IST) for the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation model. We observe a periodic energy and momentum exchange between solitons and continuous spectrum radiation resulting in repetitive oscillations of the coherent structure. We find that soliton eigenvalues oscillate on stable trajectories experiencing a slight drift on a scale of hundreds of the structure oscillation periods so that the eigenvalue dynamics is in good agreement with predictions of the IST perturbation theory. Based on the obtained results, we conclude that the IST perturbation theory justifies the existence of the long-living bi-solitons on the surface of deep water that emerge as a result of a balance between their dominant solitonic part and a portion of continuous spectrum radiation.

First observation and study of the K±→ π0π0μ±ν decay

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K± → π0π0μ±ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10−6. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10−6, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

Gravitational p → ∆+ transition form factors in chiral perturbation theory

The gravitational form factors of the transition from the proton to the ∆+ resonance are calculated to leading one-loop order using a manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of chiral perturbation theory. We take into account the leading electromagnetic and strong isospin-violating effects. The loop contributions to the transition form factors are found to be free of power-counting violating pieces, which is consistent with the absence of tree-level diagrams at the considered order. In this sense, our results can be regarded as predictions of chiral perturbation theory.

Analytic approach to the Landau–Zener problem in bounded parameter space

Three analytic solutions to the Schrödinger equation for the time-dependent Landau–Zener (LZ) Hamiltonian are presented. They correspond to specific finite-time driving paths in a bounded parameter space of a two-level system. Two of these paths go through the avoided crossing of levels, either with a constant speed or with variable speed that decreases in the region of reduced energy gap, the third path bypasses the crossing such that the energy gap remains constant. The solutions yield exact time dependencies of the excitation probability for the system evolving from the ground state of the initial Hamiltonian. The LZ formula emerges as an approximation valid within a certain interval of driving times for the constant-speed driving through the avoided crossing. For long driving times, all solutions converge to the prediction of the adiabatic perturbation theory. The excitation probability vanishes at some discrete time instants.

Aspects of chiral symmetry in QCD at T=128 MeV

We investigate several aspects of chiral symmetry in QCD at a temperature of $T=128\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$. The study is based on a $24\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}9{6}^{3}$ lattice-QCD ensemble with $\mathrm{O}(a)$-improved Wilson quarks and physical up, down and strange quark masses. The pion quasiparticle turns out to be significantly lighter than the zero-temperature pion mass, even though the corresponding static correlation length is shorter. We perform a quantitative comparison of our findings to predictions of chiral perturbation theory. Among several order parameters for chiral symmetry restoration, we compute the difference of the vector- and axial-vector time-dependent correlators and find it to be reduced by a factor $\ensuremath{\sim}2/3$ as compared to its vacuum counterpart.

Interferometric H i intensity mapping: perturbation theory predictions and foreground removal effects

ABSTRACT We provide perturbation theory predictions for the H i intensity mapping power spectrum multipoles using the Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structure, which should allow us to exploit mildly non-linear scales. Assuming survey specifications typical of proposed interferometric H i intensity mapping experiments like Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio transient Detector and PUMA, and realistic ranges of validity for the perturbation theory modelling, we run mock full shape Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analyses at z = 0.5, and compare with Stage-IV optical galaxy surveys. We include the impact of 21cm foreground removal using simulations-based prescriptions, and quantify the effects on the precision and accuracy of the parameter estimation. We vary 11 parameters in total: three cosmological parameters, seven bias and counter terms parameters, and the H i brightness temperature. Amongst them, the four parameters of interest are: the cold dark matter density, ωc, the Hubble parameter, h, the primordial amplitude of the power spectrum, As, and the linear H i bias, b1. For the best-case scenario, we obtain unbiased constraints on all parameters with $\lt 3{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ errors at $68{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ confidence level. When we include the foreground removal effects, the parameter estimation becomes strongly biased for ωc, h, and b1, while As is less biased (<2σ). We find that scale cuts $k_{\rm min} \ge 0.03 \ h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ are required to return accurate estimates for ωc and h, at the price of a decrease in the precision, while b1 remains strongly biased. We comment on the implications of these results for real data analyses.

Neural network acceleration of large-scale structure theory calculations

We make use of neural networks to accelerate the calculation of power spectra required for the analysis of galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing data. For modern perturbation theory codes, evaluation time for a single cosmology and redshift can take on the order of two seconds. In combination with the comparable time required to compute linear predictions using a Boltzmann solver, these calculations are the bottleneck for many contemporary large-scale structure analyses. In this work, we construct neural network-based surrogate models for Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) predictions of matter power spectra, real and redshift space galaxy power spectra, and galaxy-matter cross power spectra that attain ∼ 0.1% (at one sigma) accuracy over a broad range of scales in a ωCDM parameter space. The neural network surrogates can be evaluated in approximately one millisecond, a factor of 1000 times faster than the full Boltzmann code and LPT computations. In a simulated full-shape redshift space galaxy power spectrum analysis, we demonstrate that the posteriors obtained using our surrogates are accurate compared to those obtained using the full LPT model. We make our surrogate models public at https://github.com/sfschen/EmulateLSS, so that others may take advantage of the speed gains they provide to enable rapid iteration on analysis settings, something that is essential in complex contemporary large-scale structure analyses.

Static quark-antiquark interactions at nonzero temperature from lattice QCD

We study the interactions of a static quark-antiquark pair at nonzero temperature using realistic $2+1$ flavor lattice QCD calculations. The study consists of two parts. The first investigates the properties of Wilson line correlators in Coulomb gauge and compares to predictions of hard-thermal loop perturbation theory. As a second step we extract the spectral functions underlying the correlators using four conceptually different methods: spectral function fits, a hard-thermal-loop-inspired fit for the correlation function, Pad\'e rational approximation and the Bayesian reconstruction. We find that our high-statistics Euclidean lattice data are amenable to different hypotheses for the shapes of the spectral function and we compare the implications of each analysis method for the existence and properties of a well-defined ground state spectral peak.

Magnetic moments of the spin- 32 doubly charmed baryons in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

Inspired by the discovery of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryon ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}_{cc}^{++}$ and the subsequent theoretical studies of its magnetic moments, we study the magnetic moments of its spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ heavy quark spin symmetry counterparts, up to the next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. With the tree-level contributions fixed by the quark model while the two low energy constants $C$ and $H$ controlling the loop contributions determined in two ways: the quark model (case 1) and lattice QCD simulations together with the quark model (case 2), we study the quark mass dependence of the magnetic moments and compare them with the predictions of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. It is shown that the difference is sizable in case 1, but not in case 2 due to the smaller low energy constants $C$ and $H$, similar to the case of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons. Second, we predict the magnetic moments of the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons and compare them with those of other approaches. The predicted magnetic moments in case 2 for the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons are closer to those of other approaches. In addition, the large differences in case 1 and case 2 for the predicted magnetic moments may indicate the inconsistency between the quark model and the lattice QCD simulations, which should be checked by future experimental or more lattice QCD data.

Primordial non-Gaussianity from biased tracers: likelihood analysis of real-space power spectrum and bispectrum

Upcoming galaxy redshift surveys promise to significantly improve current limits on primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) through measurements of 2- and 3-point correlation functions in Fourier space. However, realizing the full potential of this dataset is contingent upon having both accurate theoretical models and optimized analysis methods. Focusing on the local model of PNG, parameterized by f NL, we perform a Monte-Carlo Markov Chain analysis to confront perturbation theory predictions of the halo power spectrum and bispectrum in real space against a suite of N-body simulations. We model the halo bispectrum at tree-level, including all contributions linear and quadratic in f NL, and the halo power spectrum at 1-loop, including tree-level terms up to quadratic order in f NL, and all loops induced by local PNG linear in f NL. Keeping the cosmological parameters fixed, we examine the effect of informative priors on the linear non-Gaussian bias parameter on the statistical inference of f NL. A conservative analysis of the combined power spectrum and bispectrum, in which only loose priors are imposed and all parameters are marginalized over, can improve the constraint on by more than a factor of 5 relative to the power spectrum-only measurement. Imposing a strong prior on b ϕ, or assuming bias relations for both b ϕ and b ϕδ (motivated by a universal mass function assumption), improves the constraints further by a factor of few. In this case, however, we find a significant systematic shift in the inferred value of f NL if the same range of wavenumber is used. Likewise, a Poisson noise assumption can lead to significant systematics, and it is thus essential to leave all the stochastic amplitudes free.

Effects of linker flexibility on phase behavior and structure of linked colloidal gels.

Colloidal nanocrystal gels can be assembled using a difunctional "linker" molecule to mediate bonding between nanocrystals. The conditions for gelation and the structure of the gel are controlled macroscopically by the linker concentration and microscopically by the linker's molecular characteristics. Here, we demonstrate using a toy model for a colloid-linker mixture that linker flexibility plays a key role in determining both phase behavior and the structure of the mixture. We fix the linker length and systematically vary its bending stiffness to span the flexible, semiflexible, and rigid regimes. At fixed linker concentration, flexible-linker and rigid-linker mixtures phase separate at low colloid volume fractions, in agreement with predictions of first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory, but the semiflexible-linker mixtures do not. We correlate and attribute this qualitatively different behavior to undesirable "loop" linking motifs that are predicted to be more prevalent for linkers with end-to-end distances commensurate with the locations of chemical bonding sites on the colloids. Linker flexibility also influences the spacing between linked colloids, suggesting strategies to design gels with desired phase behavior, structure, and, by extension, structure-dependent properties.

Bounds on Velocity-dependent Dark Matter–Proton Scattering from Milky Way Satellite Abundance

Abstract We use the latest measurements of the Milky Way satellite population from the Dark Energy Survey and Pan-STARRS1 to infer the most stringent astrophysical bound to date on velocity-dependent interactions between dark matter particles and protons. We model the momentum-transfer cross section as a power law of the relative particle velocity v with a free normalizing amplitude, σ MT = σ 0 v n , to broadly capture the interactions arising within the nonrelativistic effective theory of dark matter–proton scattering. The scattering leads to a momentum and heat transfer between the baryon and dark matter fluids in the early universe, ultimately erasing structure on small physical scales and reducing the abundance of low-mass halos that host dwarf galaxies today. From the consistency of observations with the cold collisionless dark matter paradigm, using a new method that relies on the most robust predictions of the linear perturbation theory, we infer an upper limit on σ 0 of 1.4 × 10−23, 2.1 × 10−19, and 1.0 × 10−12 cm2, for interaction models with n = 2, 4, and 6, respectively, for a dark matter particle mass of 10 MeV. These results improve observational limits on dark matter–proton scattering by orders of magnitude and thus provide an important guide for viable sub-GeV dark matter candidates.

Near-conformal dynamics in a chirally broken system

Composite Higgs models must exhibit very different dynamics from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) regardless whether they describe the Higgs boson as a dilatonlike state or a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. Large separation of scales and large anomalous dimensions are frequently desired by phenomenological models. Mass-split systems are well-suited for composite Higgs models because they are governed by a conformal fixed point in the ultraviolet but are chirally broken in the infrared. In this work we use lattice field theory calculations with domain wall fermions to investigate a system with four light and six heavy flavors. We demonstrate how a nearby conformal fixed point affects the properties of the four light flavors that exhibit chiral symmetry breaking in the infrared. Specifically we describe hyperscaling of dimensionful physical quantities and determine the corresponding anomalous mass dimension. We obtain $y_m=1+\gamma^*= 1.47(5)$ suggesting that $N_f=10$ lies inside the conformal window. Comparing the low energy spectrum to predictions of dilaton chiral perturbation theory, we observe excellent agreement which supports the expectation that the 4+6 mass-split system exhibits near-conformal dynamics with a relatively light $0^{++}$ isosinglet scalar.

Distribution of energy-momentum tensor around a static quark in the deconfined phase of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory

Energy momentum tensor (EMT) characterizes the response of the vacuum as well as the thermal medium under the color electromagnetic fields. We define the EMT by means of the gradient flow formalism and study its spatial distribution around a static quark in the deconfined phase of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. Although no significant difference can be seen between the EMT distributions in the radial and transverse directions except for the sign, the temporal component is substantially different from the spatial ones near the critical temperature $T_c$. This is in contrast to the prediction of the leading-order thermal perturbation theory. The lattice data of the EMT distribution also indicate the thermal screening at long distance and the perturbative behavior at short distance.

Transport in Strongly Coupled Quark Matter.

Motivated by the possible presence of deconfined quark matter in neutron stars and their mergers and the important role of transport phenomena in these systems, we perform the first-ever systematic study of different viscosities and conductivities of dense quark matter using the gauge/gravity duality. Using the V-QCD model, we arrive at results that are in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of perturbation theory, which highlights the differing transport properties of the system at weak and strong coupling and calls for caution in the use of the perturbative results in neutron star applications.

Impacts of pre-initial conditions on anisotropic separate universe simulations: a boosted tidal response in the epoch of reionization

ABSTRACT To generate initial conditions for cosmological N-body simulations, one needs to prepare a uniform distribution of simulation particles, the so-called pre-initial condition (pre-IC). The standard method to construct the pre-IC is to place the particles on the lattice grids evenly spaced in the three-dimensional spatial coordinates. However, even after the initial displacement of each particle according to cosmological perturbations, the particle distribution remains to display an artificial anisotropy. Such an artefact causes systematic effects in simulations at later time until the evolved particle distribution sufficiently erases the initial anisotropy. In this paper, we study the impacts of the pre-IC on the anisotropic separate universe simulation, where the effect of large-scale tidal field on structure formation is taken into account using the anisotropic expansion in a local background (simulation volume). To quantify the impacts, we compare the simulations employing the standard grid pre-IC and the glass one, where the latter is supposed to suppress the initial anisotropy. We show that the artificial features in the grid pre-IC simulations are seen until z ∼ 9, while the glass pre-IC simulations appear to be stable and accurate over the range of scales we study. From these results we find that a coupling of the large-scale tidal field with matter clustering is enhanced compared to the leading-order prediction of perturbation theory in the quasi-non-linear regime in the redshift range 5 ≲ z ≲ 15, indicating the importance of tidal field on structure formation at such high redshifts, e.g. during the epoch of reionization.

Anisotropic separate universe simulations

ABSTRACT The long-wavelength coherent overdensity and tidal force, which are not direct observables for a finite-volume survey, affect time evolution of cosmic structure formation and therefore clustering observables through the mode coupling. In this paper, we develop an ‘anisotropic’ separate universe (SU) simulation technique to simulate large-scale structure formation taking into account the effect of large-scale tidal force into the anisotropic expansion of local background. We modify the treepmN-body simulation code to implement the anisotropic SU simulations, and then study the ‘response’ function of matter power spectrum that describes how the matter power spectrum responds to the large-scale tidal effect as a function of wavenumber and redshift for a given global cosmology. We test and validate the SU simulation results from the comparison with the perturbation theory predictions and the results from high-resolution particle-mesh simulations. We find that the response function displays characteristic scale dependencies over the range of scales down to non-linear scales, up to k ≃ 6 h Mpc−1.

High-throughput density functional perturbation theory and machine learning predictions of infrared, piezoelectric, and dielectric responses

Many technological applications depend on the response of materials to electric fields, but available databases of such responses are limited. Here, we explore the infrared, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties of inorganic materials by combining high-throughput density functional perturbation theory and machine learning approaches. We compute Γ-point phonons, infrared intensities, Born-effective charges, piezoelectric, and dielectric tensors for 5015 non-metallic materials in the JARVIS-DFT database. We find 3230 and 1943 materials with at least one far and mid-infrared mode, respectively. We identify 577 high-piezoelectric materials, using a threshold of 0.5 C/m2. Using a threshold of 20, we find 593 potential high-dielectric materials. Importantly, we analyze the chemistry, symmetry, dimensionality, and geometry of the materials to find features that help explain variations in our datasets. Finally, we develop high-accuracy regression models for the highest infrared frequency and maximum Born-effective charges, and classification models for maximum piezoelectric and average dielectric tensors to accelerate discovery.

Nucleon axial structure from lattice QCD

We present a new analysis method that allows one to understand and model excited state contributions in observables that are dominated by a pion pole. We apply this method to extract axial and (induced) pseudoscalar nucleon isovector form factors, which satisfy the constraints due to the partial conservation of the axial current up to expected discretization effects. Effective field theory predicts that the leading contribution to the (induced) pseudoscalar form factor originates from an exchange of a virtual pion, and thus exhibits pion pole dominance. Using our new method, we can recover this behavior directly from lattice data. The numerical analysis is based on a large set of ensembles generated by the CLS effort, including physical pion masses, large volumes (with up to 963 × 192 sites and Lmπ = 6.4), and lattice spacings down to 0.039 fm, which allows us to take all the relevant limits. We find that some observables are much more sensitive to the choice of parametrization of the form factors than others. On the one hand, the z-expansion leads to significantly smaller values for the axial dipole mass than the dipole ansatz ( {M}_A^{z-mathit{exp}} = 1.02(10) GeV versus {M}_A^{mathrm{dipole}} = 1.31(8) GeV). On the other hand, we find that the result for the induced pseudoscalar coupling at the muon capture point is almost independent of the choice of parametrization ( {g}_P^{ast z-mathit{exp}} = 8.68(45) and {g}_P^{ast mathrm{dipole}} = 8.30(24)), and is in good agreement with both, chiral perturbation theory predictions and experimental measurement via ordinary muon capture. We also determine the axial coupling constant gA.
