Qualitative interviews of patients with COPD and muscle weakness enrolled in a clinical trial evaluating a new anabolic treatment: patient perspectives of disease experience, trial participation and outcome assessments

BackgroundChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and muscle weakness can cause impaired physical function, significantly impacting patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Loss of muscle strength is usually assessed through clinical and performance outcome (PerfO) assessments, which consists of tasks performed in a standardized manner, providing evidence of a patient’s functional ability. However, evidence documenting the patient experience of COPD and muscle weakness is limited.MethodsThis two-stage qualitative study used semi-structured interviews in patients aged 45–80 years with COPD (post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1s [FEV1]/forced vital capacity ratio < 0.70, and FEV1% predicted of 30–80%) and muscle weakness. In Stage 1, 30-minute concept elicitation interviews were conducted with participants recruited across three US sites to explore impacts on physical functioning and activities of daily living. In Stage 2, interviews were performed with participants exiting a Phase IIa trial investigating the efficacy of a selective androgen receptor modulator (GSK2881078) on leg strength, whereby PerfOs were used to evaluate strength and physical functioning endpoints. These participants completed either 60-minute in-depth (n = 32) or 15-minute confirmatory (n = 35) interviews exploring trial experience, completion of outcome measures, disease experience and treatment satisfaction.ResultsIn Stage 1 (n = 20), most participants described their muscles as weak (83.3%). Difficulties with walking (100%) and lifting heavy objects (90%) were reported. In Stage 2, 60-minute interviews, all participants (n = 32) reported a positive trial experience. Most participants reported that the home exercise program was easy to fit into daily life (77.8%), the PROactive daily diary was easy to complete (100%) and wearable sensors were easy to use (65.6%). However, technical issues were reported (71%), and few participants (19.4%) found physical assessments easy to complete. Improvements in muscle strength and functional limitations were reported by most participants. The shorter 15-minute confirmatory interviews (n = 35) supported the in-depth interview results.ConclusionThe qualitative interviews generated in-depth evidence of key concepts relevant to patients with COPD and muscle weakness and support the assessments of patient strength and physical function as outcome measures in this population in future studies.Trial numberGSK Stage 1: 206869; Stage 2: 200182, NCT03359473; Registered December 2, 2017, https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03359473.

Analysis on the Path to Improve College Students' Innovation Ability

The core elements of innovation or creativity mainly include creative thinking and creative personality. Universities should start from the perspectives of collaborative participation, service and publicity, establish a sound innovation education mechanism, link up professional teaching, develop characteristic entrepreneurship and innovation courses, build diversified entrepreneurship and innovation practice platforms, and hold entrepreneurship and innovation competitions, so as to promote college students to accumulate knowledge, skills and experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in practice.

This study aims to reexamine the role of memorial museums as forums for dialogue where diverse perspectives converge in the context of a globalized modern society, where conflicting views and beliefs are inevitable, and to explore strategies for civic participation in this context. It investigates the changing role of memorial museums within the context of expanding memory spaces and examines theories related to civic participation. The case of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), one of today's most innovative memorial museums that fosters extensive public engagement, was analyzed from the perspectives of transcultural memory theory and civic participation. Museums are places where public discourse occurs, and memorial museums, in particular, move beyond housing memories of the past to actively creating public memory with citizens. It was found that individual multi-layered and multifaceted memories are not only in competition but can also interact, show solidarity, and create a combined voice. This process of active civic participation does not bury certain memories within universal values but, rather, helps these memories gain sensitivity and contributes to the creation of new global memory landscapes. The methods by which USHMM facilitates civic participation reveal several strategies: 1) the organic arrangement of permanent and special exhibitions for varied narrative variations, 2) ways of connecting with the present, and 3) co-creation through the use of digital technology. These features suggest practical ways in which museums, including today's participatory memorial museums, can engage visitors in exhibitions, education, and social dialogue. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that memorial museums can play a central role in forming new public memories and fostering cultural dialogue through the participation of diverse citizens. This suggests that memorial museums can contribute to promoting understanding and solidarity within communities as more inclusive spaces for social dialogue.

Public support for participation in local development

Public participation in local development is an integral part of democratic agendas across the world. Yet not much research specifically focuses on people’s perspectives of participation, especially among underprivileged populations. Gaining a better understanding of people’s support for public participation is, however, important as it may inform people’s interest in future engagements with the state for local development. This paper contributes to the extensive interdisciplinary literature on public participation in local development by taking a people-centric view. Drawing on an original face-to-face vignette survey experiment (n = 502) and group interviews in Bramfischerville, a low-income residential area in Johannesburg, we examine whether people generally support public participation in local development and explore how different design features of participatory processes inform public support for participation. Overall, our mixed methods study reveals strong support for public participation, with higher support levels for more inclusive and interactive forms, meaning processes, which are open to all residents and where participants are invited to discuss priorities and needs. This, despite people’s awareness of the transaction costs of participation, such as time and energy. Moreover, we find that people’s support for participation is influenced by their experiences and satisfaction with infrastructure provision. These findings underline the importance of understanding the specificities of the given socio-economic context and people’s everyday lived realities. It also draws attention to people’s relationship with the state, as the main provider of this infrastructure. Therefore, a context-sensitive interpretation of people’s infrastructural preconditions and their relationship with the state are necessary to understand their attitudes towards participation and, more generally, for advancing participatory governance in the given context and beyond.

Youth sport during the COVID-19 pandemic: The influence of race and affluence on parents’ perspectives of youth participation

COVID-19 restrictions led to a nearly 50% decline in youth sport participation across the United States (Dorsch et al., 2021). Today, communities and sport organizations have resumed sport. However, research has yet to fully elucidate how COVID-19 restrictions impacted youth participation across different sociodemographic groups during the pandemic. The present study explored the association between race and affluence and their relationship with parents' attitudes toward children's youth sport participation before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Online questionnaires were completed by a nationally representative sample of 3706 parents (Mage = 39.57 ± 9.03 years) who had a child regularly participating in youth sport before COVID-19. Multivariate Analyses of Variance using Tukey post-hoc tests were conducted to examine the main effect differences by race and affluence and the interactive effects of race and affluence. Results suggest that race and affluence -- independently and in combination -- were salient categorical variables of children's weekly hours of sport participation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings highlight that White*high affluent groups had the highest rates of sport participation during the COVID-19 pandemic and that these families desire to invest more time and money at greater rates upon returning. Theoretically, designed intersectionality research is recommended to explore further effects of race and affluence in youth sport.

Problems of “Non-Food” Cultivated Land in China in the New Period and Suggestions for Countermeasures

With China's economic and social development, under the influence of many factors, such as the low efficiency of grain cultivation and the formation of a pattern of specialization in agricultural production, the phenomenon of “de-farming” and “de-fooding” of arable land has begun to emerge in some areas. “Non-food” in China's food production space at the same time, but also on the arable land will produce different degrees of damage. Therefore, this paper analyzes the background and challenges of the “degrading” of arable land in China in the new era, and reveals in depth the regional and typological characteristics of the “degrading” of arable land, its causes, and its impact on food and ecological security. The paper finds that the background of “non-food” cropland stems from the diversification of agricultural production and the need to explore alternative land uses other than traditional food crops, and poses a challenge to China's food security by affecting the food supply. In the future, we should explore the formation of a long-term mechanism to strengthen the policy guidance of “non-food” and improve the efficiency of arable land for food cultivation in order to stimulate farmers' incentives to grow food. The article puts forward countermeasures to enhance the willingness of business entities to grow food and prevent the “degrazing” of arable land from the perspectives of policy guidance, multi-party participation, standard construction and compensation mechanism, with a view to providing certain reference significance for the protection of arable land in China in the future.

A Quantitative Study on Undergraduate Students’ Deeper Learning in Peer-Feedback and Self-Feedback Tasks in an English as a Foreign Language Writing Course

Deeper learning competencies, such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management, are receiving increasing attention in education. In writing instruction, feedback-providing tasks have the potential for promoting deeper learning. This study develops and applies a self-report scale to explore the level of deeper learning among undergraduate students in China in providing peer feedback and self-feedback in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing course. The scale includes three dimensions: involvement, use of deeper learning strategies, and deeper learning outcomes. The research found a generally moderate level of deeper learning in various feedback-giving tasks. Significant and positive correlations were found between the three dimensions of deeper learning as well as between deeper learning, anticipation toward feedback-giving tasks and overall course evaluation. At the same time, it was found that students may be more active in deeper learning from the perspectives of their use of deeper learning strategies and the perceived learning outcomes than from the perspectives of participation in discussion as well as time and effort spent on the tasks.

STATE GENEROSITY IN HOME- AND COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES (HCBS): VARIATIONS AND IMPACT ON DEMENTIA OUTCOMES

Abstract To meet the needs of community-living older adults and reduce overall medical spending, home- and community-based services (HCBS) provide assistance and care for persons with significant physical and cognitive limitations. Together, Medicaid long-term services and supports (LTSS) coverage and the Title III program under the Older Americans Act (OAA) of 1965 support the majority of the HCBS for older adults living in the U.S. with low-income and/or disabilities. We evaluated state variations in generosity of supporting HCBS in recent years and how these variations affect the healthcare outcomes of community-living older adults and socio-economic and racial disparities in dementia outcomes. State HCBS generosity from the perspectives of program participation and intensity of services was defined by the exploratory and the confirmatory factor analysis with data from multiple sources, including state reports from the National Association of State Budget Officers. State data was linked to a nationally representative sample of older adults who enrolled in the Health and Retirement Study in 2020. Analyses revealed that overall state supports for HCBS increased over time in recent years while state Medicaid expenditures for institutional long-term care remained largely stable. State supports through both Medicaid and the OAA programs for HCBS varied substantially and persisted in recent years. Discussion will focus on instrumental variable analyses that determine the causal impact of state variations in HCBS generosity on health outcomes (i.e., unmet need; hospitalization) for persons living with dementia persons.

Abstract A078: Exploring the unexplored: Clinical trial investigator perspectives of disparities in racial/ethnic minority participation in oncology clinical trials

Abstract Purpose: Thirty years after the NIH Revitalization Act, racial/ethnic minority (REM) patients continue to be underrepresented in oncology clinical trials with disproportionately low rates of participation compared to non-Hispanic whites. Health system, patient, and medical provider factors contribute to this disparity. However, little is known about clinical trial investigator perspectives of REM participation in oncology clinical trials and their contribution to this disparity. To our knowledge there are no published quantitative studies that have investigated this important and actionable topic. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous, pilot survey of medical, radiation, and surgical oncology clinical trial investigators at a large academic center. Over a 5-week period, 107 individuals received a survey. The survey assessed 6 domains regarding disparities in REM participation in clinical trials: investigator knowledge, attitudes, and prior training on the topic, self-efficacy and motivation for improvement in addressing known disparities, and perceived barriers to REM participation in clinical trials. Modified, previously validated items were used when possible. Results: Of 60 respondents (56% response rate), 33 were male (55%). Thirty-six identified as non-Hispanic white (60%), 16 as Asian (27%), 1 as Hispanic/Latinx (2%), and 7 as other/prefer not to state (11%). Respondents included 49 medical (82%), 7 surgical (11%), and 4 radiation oncologists (7%). Average time as a clinical trial investigator was 14 years (2-40). Respondents opened an average of 2 clinical trials as primary investigator in the past year (0-10). A majority (83%) strongly agreed disparities exist in REM clinical trial participation and that the resulting lack of diversity is problematic (75%). However, only 34% strongly agreed they consider ways to achieve racial/ethnic diversity among trial participants when designing clinical trials, or ways to specifically enroll REM patients (28%). Respondents most commonly cited patient rather than health system factors as barriers to REM participation in clinical trials. Notably, nearly half (45%) agreed that lack of REM participation is a problem they cannot directly address. A majority (83%) endorsed wanting to improve their consideration of barriers to REM participation as they design clinical trials and wanted help to improve (86%). Conclusion: Our results suggest there is awareness among clinical trial investigators at our academic center of disparities in REM participation in oncology clinical trials and the problem this poses to cancer care. There is also a pervasive view that primary barriers to REM participation are patient factors, and investigators do not feel they can directly address these. Nonetheless, there is motivation among investigators to improve in their ability to consider barriers to REM participation as they design clinical trials. One size does not fit all: Clinical trial investigator perspectives of disparities in racial/ethnic minority participation in oncology clinical trials.

To our knowledge no published studies exist assessing differences in investigator perspectives based on their primary role in the clinical trial process. We hypothesized that differences exist in investigator perspectives regarding REM participation in oncology clinical trials based on having a more design-oriented (principal (PI)/co-investigator (co-I)) or recruitment-oriented role (sub-investigator (sub-I)). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous, pilot survey of oncology clinical trial investigators at an academic center. Over 5 weeks, 107 individuals received a survey assessing 6 domains about disparities in REM participation in clinical trials, including knowledge, attitudes, and prior training. Modified, previously validated items were used if possible. We performed a subset analysis of mid- and late-career investigators (&gt;/= 10 years of experience) comparing those who opened at least 1 clinical trial in the past year as PI or co-I to those who did not (sub-I). Results: There were 60 respondents (56% response rate). Average time as a clinical trialist was 14 years (2-40). Average number of trials opened in the last year as PI/co-I was 4 (1-30). Among all respondents, 83% strongly agreed disparities exist in REM clinical trial participation and that lack of diversity is problematic (75%). Notably, 45% agreed this is a problem they cannot directly address. Among mid- and late-career investigators, those who opened at least 1 trial as PI/co-I were more likely to have received training about barriers/facilitators (OR=3.56; 95% CI=1.05, 12.04; p=.04) to REM clinical trial participation and about strategies for improving participation (OR=3.75; 95% CI=1.06, 13.29; p=.04). Despite this, they were more likely to endorse wanting help to improve in this area (OR=4.95; 95% CI=1.17, 21.02; p=.03). Conclusions: Our results suggest there is awareness among clinical trial investigators of disparities in REM clinical trial participation, but investigators do not feel they can directly address these. Investigators who are more involved in clinical trial design are more likely to want help to improve their ability to address disparities in REM trial participation despite being more likely to have received prior training on the topic. Our findings suggest training alone is inadequate support for investigators involved in designing clinical trials. More studies eliciting the needs of investigators with varying roles in the clinical trial process are needed to inform targeted interventions to enhance investigators’ self-efficacy for improving REM participation in clinical trials.

Mechanisms for successful management of enterprise resource planning from user information processing and system quality perspective

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are now ubiquitous in modern organizations. A number of previous studies have focused only on system factors and perceptions, there is a noticeable shortfall in research that concurrently addresses technological factors and human roles in explaining user satisfaction. This study aimed to identify these variables from the perspectives of information systems, technology, and human participation, thereby addressing this knowledge gap. The focus of the study was a large shipbuilding and marine company utilizing an ERP system. The participants, a sample of 234 ERP users, were carefully selected by the company’s executives and practitioners, and data was collected through online questionnaires. They were selected through purposive sampling from among employees who use ERP systems in large-scale shipbuilding and marine engineering companies. The study aimed to clarify the relationships between user satisfaction and perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, system quality, service quality, participation, and information quality. A partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the collected data. The results indicated that perceived ease of use, system quality, service quality, and participation positively influenced user satisfaction, whereas perceived usefulness did not have a significant impact. Interestingly, participation was found to lessen the effects of perceived usefulness on satisfaction. The findings of this study suggest that to enhance ERP user satisfaction, managers should strive to make the ERP system easy-to-use and stable, encourage employee participation in the decision-making process, and bolster the role of the support team. It should be noted, however, that the study has limitations as it did not consider all possible factors, such as training and support. Future research should take a broader view of the variables involved in the operation of an enterprise-wide information system.

The role and transmission mechanism of forest resource abundance on low-carbon economic development in the Yangtze River Delta region: Insights from the COP26 targets

Climate change is getting more and more attention. The COP26 emphasized the need to stop deforestation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help mitigate climate change. As such, China has spare no effort to promote green and low-carbon development to achieve the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. This paper aims to analyze the impact and transmission mechanism of the forest resources abundance at the city level in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region on the realization of low-carbon economic development with the targets of COP26. From the static and dynamic relative carbon emission indicators, based on the panel data of 41 cities from 2007 to 2019, this article constructs spatial econometric models and a mediation effect model to empirically verify the impact of forest resources on low-carbon development and the transmission mechanism. The conclusions are as follows: (1) Forest resource abundance and carbon emissions per GDP show a significant negative relationship at the 1% level, and the energy consumption structure has the greatest impact. (2) The abundance of forest resources has a significant positive correlation with the carbon sequestration capacity per GDP at 1%. (3) The forest resources abundance is significantly negatively correlated with the net carbon emissions per GDP, which means after considering the carbon sequestration effect, forest resources abundance has a greater impact on the carbon emissions intensity. (4) Forest resources mainly produce a transmission mechanism for low-carbon economic development through the urbanization effect. Economic development is positively correlated with carbon emissions but negatively correlated with forest carbon sequestration. Although forest carbon sinks play a role in low-carbon economic development, it is not enough to rely solely on forest carbon sinks because of social cost. Finally, this paper proposes policy recommendations to promote low-carbon economic development from the perspectives of administrative orders, economic incentives, and voluntary participation.

Participation and social control in sanitation within the context of the reparation of damage from the disasters in Mariana and Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The disasters that occurred in Mariana and Brumadinho, in addition to the enormous loss of human lives and environmental damage, also generated impacts on the water supply, in the springs, thereby causing catchment to become unachievable, in some cases for a long period of time, and in the infrastructures, in the territories and municipalities along the basins of the Doce and Paraopeba Rivers. The impacts and damage resulting from disasters cause substantial disruption and may foster social mobilization and participation throughout these territories. This study seeks to analyze the perspectives of social participation and social control in basic sanitation in the agreements related to the reparation of damage resulting from the collapse of the Fundão dam, in Mariana, Brazil, under the responsibility of Samarco, and of the Córrego do Feijão dam, in Brumadinho, Brazil, under the responsibility of Vale. Inconsistencies and gaps have been identified in the strategies adopted by the government aimed at participation and social control in sanitation in both disasters, thereby potentially compromising the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation.

Feasibility of Integrating MEditatioN inTO heaRt Disease (the MENTOR Study): A Phase II Randomized Controlled Trial.

Comorbid depression and/or anxiety symptoms occur in 25% of patients attending cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs and are associated with poorer prognosis. There is a need to evaluate psychological interventions, including meditation, that have potential to improve psychological health in CR programs. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of integrating a meditation intervention into an existing Australian CR program for the reduction of depression and anxiety symptoms. This was a mixed-methods feasibility randomized controlled trial. Thirty-one patients with CVD and, at a minimum, mild depression and/or anxiety symptoms were randomized to meditation and standard CR or to standard CR alone. A 16-minute guided group meditation was delivered face-to-face once a week for 6 weeks, with daily self-guided meditation practice between sessions. Feasibility outcomes included screening, recruitment, and retention. Semistructured interviews of patients' (n = 10) and health professionals' (n = 18) perspectives of intervention participation and delivery were undertaken to assess acceptability. Between-group differences in depression, anxiety, stress, self-efficacy for mindfulness, and health status at 6 and 12 weeks were also assessed. Meditation was considered feasible, with 83% (12/15) of the intervention group completing an average of 3.13 (SD, 2.56) out of 6 group meditation sessions and 5.28 (SD, 8.50) self-guided sessions. Meditation was considered acceptable by patients, clinicians, and health managers. Between-group differences in the number of CR sessions completed favored the intervention group in per-protocol analyses (intervention group vs control group, 12 vs 9 sessions; P = .014), which suggests that meditation may be useful to improve patients' adherence to exercise-based CR program.

The impact of China's trade and FDI on Africa's GVC participation and economic upgrading

PurposeThis study examines the impact of China's trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) on Africa's global value chain (GVC) participation and economic upgrading.Design/methodology/approachThe study covered 48 African countries, cutting across the western, eastern, central, southern and northern subregions to cover the heterogeneity of the continent. The study adopted feasible generalized least squares panel VAR-Granger causality Wald test and system generalized methods of moments techniques for estimation.FindingsOverall, China's FDI to Africa and US-Africa trade have a linear relationship with Africa's GVC involvement and economic upgrading. The findings suggest that although China-Africa trade has a positive impact on GVC engagement and upgrading, the marginal effect decreases in the face of US-Africa and EU-Africa trade.Originality/valueThis study provides new evidence on the impact of China's FDI and trade on African economies' GVC participation and economic upgrading. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to empirically explore the effects of China's FDI and trade on Africa's GVC integration and economic upgrading as well as from the perspectives of backward and forward GVC participation. Furthermore, the study empirically examines whether the effects of Africa's economic cooperation with China relative to its GVC engagement differ from those of Europe (EU) and the US via a comparative regression.

Exploring Young Adults' Perspectives of Participation in a Mindfulness-Based Music Therapy Intervention Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Purpose: To explore adolescent and young adults' (AYAs) experiences with participation in a mindfulness-based music therapy intervention during cancer treatment before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Sixteen young adults (20-39 years old) who received cancer treatment and participated in a mindfulness-based music therapy intervention for anxiety and stress were interviewed using a semistructured interview guide. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. The interview guide contained prompts about reasons for joining the study, usual coping strategies, experience with the in-person and virtual delivery formats of the intervention, and suggestions for improvement. Themes were derived from the data using inductive content analysis methods. Results: Findings from the interviews included the following: (1) virtual group participants reported difficulty finding a private place to attend the intervention sessions, (2) participants experienced a sense of relaxation in response to intervention participation, (3) in-person group participants felt a sense of connection to the music and their family members who were present during the intervention, while virtual group participants felt a sense of connection to mindfulness, (4) virtual group participants reported that practicing music and mindfulness together was synergistic, and (5) in-person intervention delivery was preferred to virtual intervention delivery. Conclusion: This study provides insight into the contextual factors that impact satisfaction with the intervention and the effect of the intervention on anxiety and stress. Overall, while virtual mindfulness-based music therapy delivery may be more feasible, there are still important advantages to in-person delivery that should be considered in the design of future mindfulness-based music therapy interventions. Urban planners’ perspectives of public participation in planning in Nigeria

Public/community participation is globally recognized today as an integral aspect of urban planning. This is evident in various international, national, and local planning standards, regulations, and policies. This is no different in Nigeria where the various national and state level planning regulations incorporate this integral part of planning. This study investigates the extent of public participation in planning in Rivers State, Nigeria. Urban planners working in Rivers State were interviewed and academic papers on public participation in planning reviewed. This work finds that despite the mandatory legal provision for public inclusion in the planning process, it is largely not implemented in practice in the formal planning process. The lack of public participation in the planning process is a major reason for poor public support of plans which impacts successful execution. For Nigeria to achieve goals of having sustainable and vibrant urban communities, it is essential to begin implementing the planning laws which mandates public participation by meaningfully involving the public in urban planning processes. This will ensure a broader acceptance and instil a feeling of ownership of plans and processes among citizens which will enhance sustainable planning and development.

Urban Communication Strategy Based on Short Video Platform: A Case Study of TikTok

The concept of urban communication bred in the new media era takes short video platforms as the vehicle for emerging Internet-famous cities. The internal relationship between the communication strategy and development orientation of urban communication and the image practice and performance space of short videos is worth studying. Taking Chongqing and Xi’an as the research objects, this paper explores the operation mode and communication concept of urban space in the new media era from the perspectives of communication origin, user participation, and in-depth communication. The research shows that the advent of mobile short-video platforms offers a new vehicle and channel for the communication and reconstruction of urban space and enriches the audience’s cognition of city images.

The Association Between Children’s Interoceptive Awareness and Their Daily Participation: An Exploratory Study

ABSTRACT Children’s participation in daily occupations can be influenced by a range of factors. One such factor is interoceptive awareness which allows a person to understand their internal body signals and can support emotional and self-regulation. The current literature surrounding interoceptive awareness and children’s participation is lacking. To explore the association between interoceptive awareness and participation in children, 27 typically developing Australian children aged 8–12 years and one of their parents took part in this study. Children and parents completed the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness – Youth (MAIA-y) and the children completed the Children’s Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment/Preferences for Activities of Children (CAPE/PAC). Data were analyzed using Spearman Rho correlations with bootstrapping. Several statistically significant correlations were identified relating to both child and parent perspectives of child interoceptive awareness and child participation (Body Listening and Enjoyment [rs = 0.381, p = .050], Body Listening and Social Activities [rs = 0.462, p = 0.015], Self-Regulation and Recreational Activities [rs = 0.468, p = .014]) and parent-reported child interoceptive awareness and child participation (Emotional Awareness and Intensity [rs=-0.553, p = .003], Attention Regulation and Skill-Based Activities [rs=-0.540, p = .004], Emotional Awareness and Skill-Based Activities [rs=-0.646, p < .001]). This exploratory study provides some preliminary evidence relating to associations between children’s interoceptive awareness and aspects of their activity participation.
