Critical Review of Cu-Based Hole Transport Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells: From Theoretical Insights to Experimental Validation.

Despite the remarkable efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), long-term stability remains the primary barrier to their commercialization. The prospect of enhancing stability by substituting organic transport layers with suitable inorganic compounds, particularly Cu-based inorganic hole-transport materials (HTMs), holds promise due to their high valence band maximum (VBM) aligning with perovskite characteristics. This review assesses the advantages and disadvantages of these five types of Cu-based HTMs. Although Cu-based binary oxides and chalcogenides face narrow bandgap issues, the "chemical modulation of the valence band" (CMVB) strategy has successfully broadened the bandgap for Cu-based ternary oxides and chalcogenides. However, Cu-based ternary oxides encounter challenges with low mobility, and Cu-based ternary chalcogenides face mismatches in VBM alignment with perovskites. Cu-based binary halides, especially CuI, exhibit excellent properties such as wider bandgaps, high mobility, and defect tolerance, but their stability remains a concern. These limitations of single anion compounds are insightfully discussed, offering solutions from the perspective of practical application. Future research can focus on Cu-based composite anion compounds, which merge the advantages of single anion compounds. Additionally, mixed-cation chalcogenides such as CuxM1-xS enable the customization of HTM properties by selecting and adjusting the proportions of cation M. This article is protected by copyright. NK cell receptor modulation in viral infections.

Natural killer (NK) cells play a crucial role in controlling viral infections. The ability to kill infected cells without prior immunization, yet being tolerant to self, healthy cells, depends on the balance of germ-line encoded surface receptors. NK cell receptors are divided to either activating, leading to activation of NK cell and its cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory activity, or inhibitory, providing tolerance for a target cell. The signals from inhibitory receptors dominate and NK cell activation requires stimulation of activating receptors. In viral infections, NK cell interaction with infected cell can result in activation, memory-like NK cell differentiation or NK cell exhaustion, which constitutes one of the viral immune evasion mechanisms. All of these states are associated with the modulation of NK cell receptor expression. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of NK cell receptors and their role in viral infection control, as well as the alterations of their expression observed in acute or chronic infections. We present recently discovered SARS-CoV-2-mediated modulation of NK cell receptor expression and compare them with other human viral infections. Finally, since modulation of NK cell receptor activation gives promising addition to currently used antiviral therapies, we briefly discuss the clinical significance and future perspective of application of agonists or antagonists of activating and inhibitory receptors, respectively. In sum, our review shows that although much is known about NK cell receptor biology, a deeper understanding of NK cell receptors role in viral infections is still needed.

To disclose or to protect? Predicting social media users’ behavioral intention toward privacy

PurposeIn the paradox of personalized services and privacy risks, what factors influence users’ decisions is considered an interesting issue worth exploring. The current study aims to empirically explore privacy behavior of social media users by developing a theoretical model based on privacy calculus theory.Design/methodology/approachPrivacy risks, conceptualized as natural risks and integrated risks, were proposed to affect the intention of privacy disclosure and protection. The model was validated through a hybrid approach of structural equation modeling (SEM)-artificial neural network (ANN) to analyze the data collected from 527 effective responses.FindingsThe results from the SEM analysis indicated that social interaction and perceived enjoyment were strong determinants of perceived benefits, which in turn played a dominant role in the intention to disclose the privacy in social media. Similarly, trust and privacy invasion experience were significantly related to perceived risks that had the most considerable effect on users’ privacy protection intention. And the following ANN models revealed consistent relationships and rankings with the SEM results.Originality/valueThis study broadened the application perspective of privacy calculus theory to identify both linear and non-linear effects of privacy risks and privacy benefits on users’ intention to disclose or protect their privacy by using a state-of-the-art methodological approach combining SEM and ANN.

Analysis of the temporal and spatial characteristics of lunar reconnaissance orbiter’s orbit error based on multi-coverage narrow angle camera images

ABSTRACT Photogrammetric mapping of large area of the lunar surface using high-resolution orbiter images is very challenging due to increasing spatial resolution and lack of a comprehensive understanding of orbit error characteristics. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) images are currently one of the highest-resolution images of the Moon available. The study of LRO orbit errors from the perspective of mapping applications is important for high accuracy mapping of large areas using NAC images. This paper proposes a method for orbit error estimation using multi-coverage NAC images. First, available NAC images covering the study regions are orthorectified using ISIS. Then, the impact crater feature matching algorithm is used to match the multi-coverage images. Finally, estimation of the orbit error is achieved through statistical analysis of a large number of homologous points obtained from the matching. The orbit error analyses of nine representative regions on the Moon show that in most cases the refined ephemeris provided by the LOLA/GRAIL team can significantly reduce the orbit error. The orbit errors show a sawtooth variation with a period of about one year, which have been stable for a long time and tend to increase slightly in recent years. There is a slight variation of the orbit error in space, which is even less obvious when using the refined ephemeris. The general tendency is for the far side to be larger than the near side at the same latitude, and for the higher latitudes to be larger than the lower latitudes. The proposed method and analysis results provide a reference for selection and processing of multi-coverage LROC NAC images for high-resolution large-area mapping.

The forced battle between peer-review and scientometric research assessment: Why the CoARA initiative is unsound

Abstract Endorsed by the European Research Area, a Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), primarily composed of research institutions and funders, was established in 2022. Its mission is to reform research assessment, emphasizing a shift towards qualitative judgment. This study examines the CoARA initiative from theoretical, practical, and applicative perspectives, exploring its implications. The manuscript questions a standardized way to evaluate research suitable in every context. Through empirical evidence and internal logical arguments, it challenges the supremacy of qualitative over quantitative methods in terms of robustness, accuracy, validity, functionality, and time and cost convenience in STEMM research assessment. The aim is to clear up common misunderstandings and offer insights to policymakers and decision-makers in charge of defining how research should be evaluated.

Viscous Mechano‐Electric Response of Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid

AbstractDirect viscous mechano‐electric response is demonstrated for a room‐temperature ferroelectric nematic liquid, which combines large spontaneous electric polarization with 3D fluidity. The mechano‐electric transduction is observed in the frequency range 1 −200 Hz via a simple demonstrator device. The liquid is placed into a deformable container with electrodes and the electric current induced by both periodic and irregular actuation of the container is examined. The experiments reveal a rich interplay of several distinct viscous mechano‐electric phenomena, where both shape deformations and material flow cause changes in the electric polarization structure of a ferroelectric nematic liquid. The results show that the mechano‐electric features of the material promise a considerable applicative perspective spanning from sensitive tactile sensors to energy harvesting devices.

Art and archaeology in an interactive time-traveling online and museum experience. A case study on the Via Appia Antica.

This paper presents an innovative exploration of digital twinning technologies and its integration with artistic perspectives and interactive museum storytelling. It presents a physical and virtual online museum exhibition that was developed to visualize and experience changes of an archaeological landscape. Central to this exhibition was an interactive installation with a virtual 3D environment in which visitors could revisit viewpoints of past image creators like photographers, cinematographers, architects and painters. The exhibition combined digital twin technologies with artistic and archaeological research to form an immersive landscape biography.As a study area, the exhibition focused on mile V and VI of the Via Appia Antica near Rome. For six different funerary monuments, the exact locations of 110 historical images have been revisited and geo-referenced in a virtual 3D environment. Each historical image was artistically morphed into a present-day image using video technology. Additionally, visitors could explore virtual reconstructions and 3D prints of these monuments, accompanied with 3D animations.The paper discusses the motivation behind the design and setup of the museum and virtual exhibition, together with the technological challenges that were encountered. All tooling for this research was developed as Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS), allowing it to be reused. We discuss lessons learned and future application perspectives of the presented concept and installation. The work illustrates the power of blending cutting-edge technologies with art and storytelling to create a dynamic, accessible, and enriching experience of cultural heritage.

Triplet State Radical Chemistry: Significance of the Reaction of 3SO2 with HCOOH and HNO3.

The triplet excited states of sulfur dioxide can be accessed in the UV region and have a lifetime large enough that they can react with atmospheric trace gases. In this work, we report high level ab initio calculations for the reaction of the a3B1 and b3A2 excited states of SO2 with weak and strong acidic species such as HCOOH and HNO3, aimed to extend the chemistry reported in previous studies with nonacidic H atoms (water and alkanes). The reactions investigated in this work are very versatile and follow different kinds of mechanisms, namely, proton-coupled electron transfer (pcet) and conventional hydrogen atom transfer (hat) mechanisms. The study provides new insights into a general and very important class of excited-state-promoted reactions, opening up interesting chemical perspectives for technological applications of photoinduced H-transfer reactions. It also reveals that atmospheric triplet chemistry is more significant than previously thought.

Assembling state power through rescaling: Inter-jurisdictional development in the Beijing-Tianjin Zhongguancun Tech Town

Recent studies have applied the explanatory framework of state rescaling to interrogate China's emergent city-regional governance. Much of the extant literature has concentrated on either the centrally driven city regionalism from above or local efforts on cross-boundary cooperation from below. Rather than simply abstracting the multi-dimensional and multi-scalar dynamics in the rescaling process around one singular state project, this paper moves forward to explore the co-existence and co-functioning of variegated rescaling processes contributing to regional governance by deploying assemblage as a heuristic approach. This paper examines an inter-jurisdictional development zone – Beijing-Tianjin Zhongguancun Tech Town in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to provide a relational and processual understanding of scalar politics on the ground. Our analysis demonstrates how discrete and fragmented spaces and actors are assembled within a specific entity through various rescaling processes. The interplay of local, regional and national actors with different motivations gives rise to a new inter-scalar and inter-jurisdictional regulatory regime for regional industrial integration with relative coherence. This emergent governance regime is sustained and embedded in both topological and territorial political relations. This article furthers the understanding of China's city regional governance by analysing a situated assemblage. It provides an applicable perspective for investigating other trans-local projects and city regionalism.

Bad dog, smart dog: Spontaneous discrimination of quantities in shelter dogs

Dogs’ co-domestication led to a series of modifications in their behaviour and cognition. Yet, how recent evolutionary history also interacts with developmental and experiential factors is often neglected. Here we tested shelter dogs in a two-alternatives free-choice task between different food quantities. Shelter dogs represent a heterogeneous population with high inter-individual variability, and we hypothesised that we could observe differences in cognitive performance between individuals depending on their attitude towards humans. Overall, we found that dogs preferred to approach the larger set of food (emmeans = 6.62. SE = 0.24, t = 28.17, p < 0.0001). However, consistently with our initial hypothesis, we observed that dogs that were evaluated as ‘less sociable’ by the keepers of the shelter succeeded already on their first trial (P(larger set) = 0.81, SE = 0.1, z = 2.31, p = 0.02), similar to what was observed in wolves and roaming dogs. Vice-versa, individuals that were evaluated as ‘highly sociable’ behaved at chance on the first trial and begun selecting the larger set only after a first interaction with the experimental setting (P(larger set) = 0.51, SE = 0.11, z = −0.7, p = 0.94), thus behaving alike to pet dogs. We discuss our results from both an experimental perspective, as in designing studies that account for multifaceted factors to reach a better understanding of cognition and behaviour in the Canis familiaris, and an applicative perspective, as in adding on current practices to facilitate the difficult process of inclusion of dogs in shelters, and possibly adoption.

Consumer Behavior in Food Delivery Applications: A Systematic Literature Review and Future Research Agenda

Over the past few years, there has been notable interest among consumers in food delivery applications. Consequently, understanding consumer behavior within this context has become crucial for practitioners seeking to execute effective marketing strategies. While academic studies in this field are gaining traction, there remains a lack of a comprehensive overview. Existing literature on the subject is often fragmented and inconsistent, hindering a thorough comprehension of consumer behavioral patterns in food delivery applications. Thus, this study aims to address this gap by conducting a systematic literature review to organize and synthesize current knowledge on consumer behavior in such applications, elucidating how consumers interact within these platforms. We analyzed 587 journal articles extracted from primary databases (Scopus and Web of Science), ultimately reviewing 112 articles spanning from 2014 to August 2023. Furthermore, we developed a conceptual framework to fully grasp the variables influencing consumer behavior, showcasing frequently reported factors in food delivery application literature. This research also identifies nine directions for further exploration, including regional and country comparisons, methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives, demographic analyses, independent variables, moderating effects, affective and cognitive evaluations, outcome responses, and drone-based food delivery application perspectives. This review is expected to offer valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners.

Do political connections facilitate or inhibit firms' digital transformation? Evidence from China's A-share private listed companies.

Given the advent of the digital era, digital transformation has become necessary for enterprise development. Political connections are the most important resources for enterprise development in most countries. However, the impact of political connections on corporate digital transformation has yet to be verified. This study uses ERNIE, a large language model, to construct a measurement of corporate digital transformation from the perspective of digital technology application through a textual analysis of the annual reports of A-share privately listed companies from 2008 to 2020 and analyzes the impact of political connections on corporate digital transformation and its mechanism of action. The findings demonstrate that political connections have a significant inhibitory effect on corporate digital transformation. This conclusion still holds after a series of robustness and endogeneity tests. The mechanism analyses demonstrate that political connections primarily affect corporate digital transformation through three mechanisms: weakening risk, inhibiting innovation, and enhancing resource crowding. We theoretically expand the understanding of the economic impact of political connections and provide new ideas for accelerating enterprise digital transformation from the perspective of policy makers.

Multi-timescale optimization of integrated energy system with diversified utilization of hydrogen energy under the coupling of green certificate and carbon trading

Promoting renewable energy and developing low-carbon integrated energy systems are noteworthy in the energy sector. However, in existing works on the integrated energy system, the coupling of green certificate and carbon trading mechanism under diversified utilization of hydrogen energy has not been fully considered to provide an incentive effect for uncertain renewable energy resources. Based on these considerations, a multi-timescale optimization of an integrated energy system with diversified utilization of hydrogen energy is studied under the coupling of green certificate and carbon trading mechanism. First, the coupled interaction mechanism of green certificate trading-stepped carbon trading is proposed by linking stepped carbon trading to green certificate trading through green certificates. Furthermore, the establishment of the diversified utilization unit of hydrogen energy addresses carbon emissions from the perspective of energy application and offers fresh concepts for a low-carbon economy. Then, an optimized scheduling model for multiple time scales of day-ahead/intraday/real-time is developed to reduce the impact of renewable energy prediction errors on system operation. Results acquired from case studies demonstrate the effectiveness in terms of achieving economic and low carbon. The accommodation level of renewable energy with a coupling mechanism improves by 3.08% compared to that without considering coupling. In addition, the diversified utilization of the hydrogen energy model enables the reduction in total cost and carbon emission by 5.14% and 2.4927 tonnes in comparison to the traditional power-to-gas mode.

Toward explainable AI in radiology: Ensemble-CAM for effective thoracic disease localization in chest X-ray images using weak supervised learning.

Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging is widely employed by radiologists to diagnose thoracic diseases. Recently, many deep learning techniques have been proposed as computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) tools to assist radiologists in minimizing the risk of incorrect diagnosis. From an application perspective, these models have exhibited two major challenges: (1) They require large volumes of annotated data at the training stage and (2) They lack explainable factors to justify their outcomes at the prediction stage. In the present study, we developed a class activation mapping (CAM)-based ensemble model, called Ensemble-CAM, to address both of these challenges via weakly supervised learning by employing explainable AI (XAI) functions. Ensemble-CAM utilizes class labels to predict the location of disease in association with interpretable features. The proposed work leverages ensemble and transfer learning with class activation functions to achieve three objectives: (1) minimizing the dependency on strongly annotated data when locating thoracic diseases, (2) enhancing confidence in predicted outcomes by visualizing their interpretable features, and (3) optimizing cumulative performance via fusion functions. Ensemble-CAM was trained on three CXR image datasets and evaluated through qualitative and quantitative measures via heatmaps and Jaccard indices. The results reflect the enhanced performance and reliability in comparison to existing standalone and ensembled models.

Chattering Free Sliding-Mode Controller Design for Underactuated Tower Cranes With Uncertain Disturbance

Tower cranes are widely used in various industrial sites and require a high level of anti-disturbance performance from the crane controller due to the variability of the application environment. Although sliding mode control is a typical anti-disturbance control method, most sliding mode controllers suffer from output chattering and do not reflect well under severe external disturbances. To address these issues from a practical application perspective, a finite time sliding mode control method using the super-twisting algorithm (STA) is proposed for underactuated tower cranes operating in the presence of external disturbances. The proposed method includes a finite-time chattering-free sliding mode controller that eases the output torque chattering problem and a finite-time sliding mode observer based on STA to observe the uncertain disturbances. The observed values are then applied to the controller through feedforward compensation. Experimental results show that the proposed control method effectively weakens output torque chattering, compensates for disturbance quickly, and accurately completes control tasks.

Improving the performance parameters of organic field-effect transistors via alkyl chain length of boronic acid self-assembled monolayers

Interface modification is a promising technique for enhancing electrical parameters of Organic Field Effect Transistor (OFETs). In OFETs, self-assembled monolayer molecules are widely used for treatment dielectric/semiconductor interface layer. Modification of dielectric/semiconductor layer with SAM molecules ensures a variety of potential applications. Boronic acids with four different alkyl chain lengths (Cn-BA; n = 8, 10, 12, 14) molecules were used in this study to treat the Al2O3 dielectric surface in dinaphtho[2,3-b:2′,3′-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT) based OFETs. Treated with SAMs improve the mobility of Al2O3 surfaces for linear and saturation regime and threshold voltages shifted from positive direction. The morphological and electrical characterizations were performed for fabricated OFET. The results show that alkyl-boronic acids SAM molecules open a new perspective for further optoelectronic applications due to its application for oxide surfaces and controllability.

Femtosecond Laser 3D Nano‐Printing for Functionalization of Optical Fiber Tips

AbstractFunctionalized optical fiber tips featuring miniature sizes and diverse functions have broken the limitations of traditional optical fiber with fixed shapes and single materials, significantly enriching the application scenarios in communication, sensing, imaging, and other fields. However, the unconventional shape presents challenges in manufacturing arbitrarily sophisticated 3D micro/nano structures on optical fiber tips. Femtosecond laser 3D nano‐printing (FL‐3DNp) technology injects new vitality into the functionalization of fiber tips due to its high‐precision, customizable structure, and real 3D processing abilities, as well as advantages of non‐vacuum, maskless, and plentiful materials. This paper extensively compares the key performance parameters of various micro‐nano manufacturing technologies for functionalizing optical fiber probes and focuses on the FL‐3DNp technology. In addition, the latest research progresses are systematically presented from the perspective of structure and application. Finally, the current research challenges and future development directions in this emerging field are discussed, aiming at providing scientific and industrial guidance for FL‐3DNp in functionalizing optical fibers.

Dietary intervention in acne management: review of the literature and future prospective

Acne is a common skin disease, affecting millions of subjects worldwide. Several processes and mechanisms have been identified in acne pathogenesis. Among these, it is known that acne or its worsening is also related to metabolic factors and nutritional influences. In this scenario, we carried out a review of the current literature in order to investigate the role of diet in acne disease, offering a wide perspective for possible clinical applications. A total of 55 manuscripts were considered. In particular, the role of the Western diet, glycemic index, glycemic load, dairy products, fats, fatty acids, Mediterranean diet, ketogenic diet, and dietary supplements in acne management has been investigated. On one hand, dairy products, foods with high glycemic load and glycemic index, fatty acids and fats seem to worsen the severity; on the other hand, Mediterranean and ketogenic diet, and oral supplements seem to improve the disease. Despite the conflicting results and conclusions in the scientific literature about the impact of nutrition in acne, mainly related to the severla limitations of the study design, several prospective, controlled, well-designed studies have recently demonstrated the role of some specific nutrition influenced mediators on acne severity.

Heterogeneous CuS QDs/BiVO4@Y2O2S Nanoreactor for Monitorable Photocatalysis.

Exploration of multifunctional integrated catalysts is of great significance for photocatalysis toward practical application. Herein, a 1D confined nanoreactor with a heterogeneous core-shell structure is designed for synergies of efficient catalysis and temperature monitoring by custom encapsulation of Z-scheme heterojunction CuS quantum dots/BiVO4 (CuS QDs/BiVO4) and Y2O2S-Er, Yb. The dispersed active sites created by the QDs with high surface energy improve the mass transfer efficiency, and the efficient electron transport channels at the heterogeneous interface extend the carrier lifetime, which endows the nanoreactor with excellent catalytic performance. Meanwhile, real-time temperature monitoring is realized based on the thermally coupled levels 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ using fluorescence intensity ratio, which enables the monitorable photocatalysis. Furthermore, the nanoreactor with a multidimensional structure increases effective intermolecular collisions to facilitate the catalytic process by restricting the reaction within distinct enclosed spaces and circumvents potential unknown interaction effects. The design of multi-space nanoconfined reactors opens up a new avenue to modulate catalyst function, providing a unique perspective for photocatalytic applications in the mineralization of organic pollutants, hydrogen production, and nitrogen fixation.

Analysis on patent layout of silicon carbide ceramic membrane technology in global

Silicon carbide ceramic membranes are known as a new generation of membrane products due to their excellent chemical stability and high flux advantages. This article, based on the PatSnap patent analysis, analyzes the global patents of silicon carbide ceramic membranes, preparation methods, devices and equipment, application-related patents, and applicants from perspectives of patent applications, patent layouts, and international patent classification technical categories. It concludes that the technological hotspots in the field of silicon carbide ceramic membranes are concentrated on improving separation efficiency through separation applications, providing a reference for the technical improvement, application, and patent layout of silicon carbide ceramic membranes.
