Critical Review of Cu-Based Hole Transport Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells: From Theoretical Insights to Experimental Validation.

Despite the remarkable efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), long-term stability remains the primary barrier to their commercialization. The prospect of enhancing stability by substituting organic transport layers with suitable inorganic compounds, particularly Cu-based inorganic hole-transport materials (HTMs), holds promise due to their high valence band maximum (VBM) aligning with perovskite characteristics. This review assesses the advantages and disadvantages of these five types of Cu-based HTMs. Although Cu-based binary oxides and chalcogenides face narrow bandgap issues, the "chemical modulation of the valence band" (CMVB) strategy has successfully broadened the bandgap for Cu-based ternary oxides and chalcogenides. However, Cu-based ternary oxides encounter challenges with low mobility, and Cu-based ternary chalcogenides face mismatches in VBM alignment with perovskites. Cu-based binary halides, especially CuI, exhibit excellent properties such as wider bandgap, high mobility, and defect tolerance, but their stability remains a concern. These limitations of single anion compounds are insightfully discussed, offering solutions from the perspective of practical application. Future research can focus on Cu-based composite anion compounds, which merge the advantages of single anion compounds. Additionally, mixed-cation chalcogenides such as CuxM1-xS enable the customization of HTM properties by selecting and adjusting the proportions of cation M.

Organic cage-based frameworks: from synthesis to applications

The investigation of organic cage-based frameworks (OCFs) has attracted increasing attention over the past decade due to their versatile synthetic methods and broad property range resulting from the unique combination of porous organic cages (POCs) with diverse framework materials, including porous organic polymers (POPs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs). Nevertheless, a comprehensive summary of the research advancements in OCFs remains elusive in the literature. This review addresses this gap by providing a detailed overview of the development of OCF-based materials from both synthetic and applicative perspectives. The discussion begins with systematically exploring design principles and common strategies for elaborating OCFs, achieved by rational selection of bond-forming routes suitable for various POC monomers, including covalent bonds, coordination bonds, and supramolecular interactions. Subsequently, the review highlights the functional attributes derived from the distinctive structural features of OCFs, showcasing their task-specific applications in adsorption/separation, catalysis, membrane technology, and other fields. Lastly, the article summarizes the opportunities and challenges anticipated as the exploration of the OCF family continues to advance in material science.

Could 'Isochoric Freezing' Revolutionise Food Preservation?

The present article responds to the food engineering community's growing interest in an emerging and lauded approach to food preservation, popularised by its developers as 'isochoric freezing'. A strong campaign in the scientific literature and mass media has recently promoted this technique as a universal replacement for traditional food freezing and the frozen supply chain by highlighting a number of alleged advantages of 'isochoric freezing'. Some of these claims therefore require a more neutral and critical assessment against the background of the today's state of the art in food freezing technologies. Hence, this article spotlights several concerns regarding the plausibility, energy expenditure, resource efficiency, process rate, throughput and safety of 'isochoric freezing', as well as the correct use of food refrigeration terminology. The aspects considered are intended to make food scientists, technologists and engineers more aware of the real capabilities and the application perspectives of this still immature mode of refrigerated food processing.

Learning-based methods for adaptive informative path planning

Adaptive informative path planning (AIPP) is important to many robotics applications, enabling mobile robots to efficiently collect useful data about initially unknown environments. In addition, learning-based methods are increasingly used in robotics to enhance adaptability, versatility, and robustness across diverse and complex tasks. Our survey explores research on applying robotic learning to AIPP, bridging the gap between these two research fields. We begin by providing a unified mathematical problem definition for general AIPP problems. Next, we establish two complementary taxonomies of current work from the perspectives of (i) learning algorithms and (ii) robotic applications. We explore synergies, recent trends, and highlight the benefits of learning-based methods in AIPP frameworks. Finally, we discuss key challenges and promising future directions to enable more generally applicable and robust robotic data-gathering systems through learning. We provide a comprehensive catalog of papers reviewed in our survey, including publicly available repositories, to facilitate future studies in the field.

Advancing rare cancer research by MALDI mass spectrometry imaging: Applications, challenges, and future perspectives in sarcoma.

MALDI mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI imaging) uniquely advances cancer research, by measuring spatial distribution of endogenous and exogenous molecules directly from tissue sections. These molecular maps provide valuable insights into basic and translational cancer research, including tumor biology, tumor microenvironment, biomarker identification, drug treatment, and patient stratification. Despite its advantages, MALDI imaging is underutilized in studying rare cancers. Sarcomas, a group of malignant mesenchymal tumors, pose unique challenges in medical research due to their complex heterogeneity and low incidence, resulting in understudied subtypes with suboptimal management and outcomes. In this review, we explore the applicability of MALDI imaging in sarcoma research, showcasing its value in understanding this highly heterogeneous and challenging rare cancer. We summarize all MALDI imaging studies in sarcoma to date, highlight their impact on key research fields, including molecular signatures, cancer heterogeneity, and drug studies. We address specific challenges encountered when employing MALDI imaging for sarcomas, and propose solutions, such as using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues, and multiplexed experiments, and considerations for multi-site studies and digital data sharing practices. Through this review, we aim to spark collaboration between MALDI imaging researchers and clinical colleagues, to deploy the unique capabilities of MALDI imaging in the context of sarcoma.

Extrafibrillar demineralization: Yes or no?

ObjectiveExtrafibrillar demineralization is considered to be an ideal solution for addressing the durability of resin-dentin bonding interfaces. However, its theoretical basis is contradictory to ionization equilibrium of hydroxyapatite dissolution. In this study, various calcium chelators were selected as dentin conditioners to explore the essence of dentin demineralization with chelators and its effect on resin-dentin adhesion. MethodsPolyethyleneimine grafted with EDTA and polyacrylic acid sodium (PAAN450k) larger than 40 kDa, as well as PAAN (PAAN3k) and EDTA smaller than 6 kDa, were prepared as dentin conditioners. The dentin powder was designed to characterize whether it would demineralize without contact with PAAN450k. Dentin demineralization effect with four conditioners was evaluated with field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and quantification of hydroxyproline concentration after enzymatic degradation. Micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) test and failure mode analysis were employed to assess the bonding effect of the four chelators in both wet and dry bonding, with H3PO4 wet bonding serving as the control group. ResultsDemineralization occurs when PAAN450k was not in direct contact with the dentin powder. The extrafibrillar demineralization cannot be induced by any chelator regardless of its molecular weight. Complete demineralization including extrafibrillar and intrafibrillar demineralization would occur with sufficient interaction time. Moreover, chelators could not provide a reliable dentin bonding effect under a short interaction time. SignificanceFrom the perspective of theory and application, extrafibrillar demineralization is not a reliable strategy, which provides a reminder for exploring new strategies in the future.

Recent progress of covalent organic frameworks in high selective separation of radionuclides

The utilization of nuclear energy power and nuclear weapon tests not only releases large amounts of radionuclides into environment, but also needs 235U as nuclear fuel for nuclear energy generation. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have the advantages of tunable porous structures, adjustable active sites and enough special functional groups, which assure the high selective preconcentration of target radionuclides from complex solutions. In this perspective, the selective extraction of radionuclides (U(VI) as representative cationic ion, Tc(VII) as representative anionic ion, I2 as gaseous nuclide and other nuclides) by COFs through sorption, and photocatalytic strategies are described, and the results show the high efficiency of COFs in target radionuclides removal. The perspective and challenges for the real applications of COFs in future are discussed in the end.Graphical

Artificial Intelligence in Pediatric Emergency Medicine: Applications, Challenges, and Future Perspectives.

The dawn of Artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare stands as a milestone in medical innovation. Different medical fields are heavily involved, and pediatric emergency medicine is no exception. We conducted a narrative review structured in two parts. The first part explores the theoretical principles of AI, providing all the necessary background to feel confident with these new state-of-the-art tools. The second part presents an informative analysis of AI models in pediatric emergencies. We examined PubMed and Cochrane Library from inception up to April 2024. Key applications include triage optimization, predictive models for traumatic brain injury assessment, and computerized sepsis prediction systems. In each of these domains, AI models outperformed standard methods. The main barriers to a widespread adoption include technological challenges, but also ethical issues, age-related differences in data interpretation, and the paucity of comprehensive datasets in the pediatric context. Future feasible research directions should address the validation of models through prospective datasets with more numerous sample sizes of patients. Furthermore, our analysis shows that it is essential to tailor AI algorithms to specific medical needs. This requires a close partnership between clinicians and developers. Building a shared knowledge platform is therefore a key step.

Over the past few decades, marine current energy utilization has transitioned from conceptual demonstrations to industrial-scale prototypes. This progression now approaches a crucial phase emphasizing the need for industrialization and commercialization. This paper provides an in-depth examination of the developmental status of large-scale marine current turbines and arrays, underscoring the promising prospects for marine current energy systems. Despite the significant advancements, the deployment of these systems has revealed several challenges, including blade design optimization, transmission system selection, and the establishment of appropriate test sites. Addressing these issues is essential for technological maturity and economic feasibility, which will foster the next wave of innovation in marine energy systems. Furthermore, the paper offers various perspectives for future applications.

X-Ray Crystallographic Analysis of Pr Modified BaTiO3 Ceramics with a Theoretical Perspective for Potential Applications in Microelectronics

By examining the diffraction data, the microstructure of the ball-milled synthesized powder sample ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]TiO3) was characterized. Through the application of Rietveld’s powder structure refinement approach to analyze X-ray powder diffraction data of ball-milled powder mixes, structural and microstructural alterations in terms of lattice defects have been assessed in the formation of single-phase praseodymium-modified BaTiO3. Bond lengths, bond angles, and generated locations of the [Formula: see text]Pr0[Formula: see text]TiO3 ceramic have been discussed about its generated structure. X-ray diffraction with respect to the first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) is used to study the nanostructure of void species. General equations were utilized to determine various FSDP characteristics such as interlayer separation, correlation length, nanovoid diameter and scattering vector magnitude. Although the literature reports on many properties of Pr-modified barium titanate ceramic, this sample’s quantitative analysis and nanovoid determination are presented for the first time.

Prominent or subtle: The impact of brand prominence on social media advertisement engagement

Brand prominence is a persuasive content feature of social media advertisements (SMA). Drawing on communication and persuasion theory, our research explores the effect of brand prominence on SMA engagement and its mechanism through five scenario-based experiments. The results suggest that high (vs. low) brand prominence lessens consumers' SMA engagement, but this basic effect is moderated by self-brand connection and perceived role overload. Cognitive ad avoidance mediates these effects. These results reveal that brand prominence in SMA hurts persuasion effects. Our research (1) enriches the application perspective of communication and persuasion theory, (2) provides new ideas for research in consumer resource management and contributes to the conservation of resource theory, (3) and complements brand prominence aftereffects research. Also, our findings provide practical guidance for firms’ interaction strategies with consumers on social media.

Pump and probe wave mixing for imaging nonlinear features embedded into a massive concrete block

Abstract Nonlinear ultrasonic parameters are known to be highly sensitive to the presence of damage in materials, and numerous methods have already been reported. This study proposes a way to image a nonlinear defect embedded into a nonlinear medium. The nonlinear defect is mimicked by a Berea sandstone sphere (high nonlinearity). It is placed into a large concrete block (average nonlinearity) during casting. The proposed pump and probe propagating wave interaction method allows imaging the presence of the highly nonlinear region. The image contrast is magnified by a factor 8 in the defective zone. The results are validated using a model and the individual mechanical properties of both concrete and Berea Sandstone. These findings open perspectives for application to civil engineering concrete structures such as the assessment of durability distresses involving internal swelling.

Microfabrication through Self‐Ordering of Cracks: Mechanism, Upscaling and Application for Transparent Electrodes

AbstractWhen drying a colloidal solution, cracks appear in the resulting colloidal film. In certain cases, spontaneous order is observed, and cracks form arrays of periodic patterns. Although this phenomenon might be envisioned as a patterning method, overcoming practical challenges is necessary to transform it into a technological tool for microfabrication. This study explores various technological aspects aimed at leveraging the self‐assembly of cracks as a scalable microfabrication tool for large‐scale device production. Through a series of analyses, including time‐resolved Grazing‐Incidence Small‐Angle X‐Ray Scattering (GISAXS), it is offered novel insights into controlling the crack self‐ordering mechanism, minimizing defects, and implementing strategies for large‐scale patterning and pattern transfer. The process proves to be surprisingly robust, maintaining its efficacy with the same colloidal solution even after two years. By introducing biphasic dip‐coating, large‐scale crack patterns up to 100 cm2, while preserving their periodicity and ordering is achieved. As a proof of concept, the use of crack‐patterned colloidal films as masks for fabricating metallic sub‐micrometer objects, that serve as transparent electrodes with adjustable transparency and conductivity is showcased. Overall, this method presents significant advantages over conventional lithography, being cost‐effective, versatile, environmentally friendly, and scalable, thereby offering new perspectives for diverse applications requiring cost‐effective and large‐scale patterning.

Sorting Out the Latest Advances in Separators and Pilot-Scale Microbial Electrochemical Systems for Wastewater Treatment: Concomitant Development, Practical Application, and Future Perspective.

To date, dozens of pilot-scale microbial fuel cell (MFC) devices have been successfully developed worldwide for treating various types of wastewater. The availability and configurations of separators are determining factors for the economic feasibility, efficiency, sustainability, and operability of these devices. Thus, the concomitant advances between the separators and pilot-scale MFC configurations deserve further clarification. The analysis of separator configurations has shown that their evolution proceeds as follows: from ion-selective to ion-non-selective, from nonpermeable to permeable, and from abiotic to biotic. Meanwhile, their cost is decreasing and their availability is increasing. Notably, the novel MFCs configured with biotic separators are superior to those configured with abiotic separators in terms of wastewater treatment efficiency and capital cost. Herein, a highly comprehensive review of pilot-scale MFCs (>100 L) has been conducted, and we conclude that the intensive stack of the liquid cathode configuration is more advantageous when wastewater treatment is the highest priority. The use of permeable biotic separators ensures hydrodynamic continuity within the MFCs and simplifies reactor configuration and operation. In addition, a systemic comparison is conducted between pilot-scale MFC devices and conventional decentralized wastewater treatment processes. MFCs showed comparable cost, higher efficiency, long-term stability, and significant superiority in carbon emission reduction. The development of separators has greatly contributed to the availability and usability of MFCs, which will play an important role in various wastewater treatment scenarios in the future.

A New CMOS FTFNDITA Implementation and Its Application

ABSTRACT This research article presents a new design of a CMOS analog building block, termed a Four Terminal Floating Nullor Differential Input Transconductance Amplifier (FTFNDITA). This new analog building block can operate up to the MHz range and offers low-power dissipation circuitry. The proposed FTFNDITA works with ± 1.65 V power supply. Moreover, a ICs-based FTFNDITA is also developed using an off-self commercially available Current Feedback Operational Amplifier (CFOA) as IC AD844 and Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) as IC LM13700 or IC CA3080. To extend the application perspective of the proposed FTFNDITA blocks, a few fundamental analog signal processing circuits like the design of Floating Inductor Simulator (FIS), First-Order Low-Pass Filter (FLPF), Floating Capacitance Multiplier (FCM), and its extension for active filter design, are incorporated. In addition, a non-ideality investigation is also performed to test the deviation between the ideal and practical design. Finally, PSPICE and experimental verifications are observed to validate the functionality of FTFNDITA.

Comprehensive dosimetric characterization of novel silicon carbide detectors with UHDR electron beams for FLASH radiotherapy.

The extremely fast delivery of doses with ultra high dose rate (UHDR) beams necessitates the investigation of novel approaches for real-time dosimetry and beam monitoring. This aspect is fundamental in the perspective of the clinical application of FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT), as conventional dosimeters tend to saturate at such extreme dose rates. This study aims to experimentally characterize newly developed silicon carbide (SiC) detectors of various active volumes at UHDRs and systematically assesses their response to establish their suitability for dosimetry in FLASH-RT. SiC PiN junction detectors, recently realized and provided by STLab company, with different active areas (ranging from 4.5 to 10mm2) and thicknesses (10-20µm), were irradiated using 9MeV UHDR pulsed electron beams accelerated by the ElectronFLASH linac at the Centro Pisano for FLASH Radiotherapy (CPFR). The linearity of the SiC response as a function of the delivered dose per pulse (DPP), which in turn corresponds to a specific instantaneous dose rate, was studied under various experimental conditions by measuring the produced charge within the SiC active layer with an electrometer. Due to the extremely high peak currents, an external customized electronic RC circuit was built and used in conjunction with the electrometer to avoid saturation. The study revealed a linear response for the different SiC detectors employed up to 21Gy/pulse for SiC detectors with 4.5 mm2/10µm active area and thickness. These values correspond to a maximum instantaneous dose rate of 5.5 MGy/s and are indicative of the maximum achievable monitored DPP and instantaneous dose rate of the linac used during the measurements. The results clearly demonstrate that the developed devices exhibit a dose-rate independent response even under extreme instantaneous dose rates and dose per pulse values. A systematic study of the SiC response was also performed as a function of the applied voltage bias, demonstrating the reliability of these dosimeters with UHDR also without any applied voltage. This demonstrates the great potential of SiC detectors for accurate dosimetry in the context of FLASH-RT.

Revisiting the Role of Sensors for Shaping Plant Research: Applications and Future Perspectives.

Plant health monitoring is essential for understanding the impact of environmental stressors (biotic and abiotic) on crop production, and for tailoring plant developmental and adaptive responses accordingly. Plants are constantly exposed to different stressors like pathogens and soil pollutants (heavy metals and pesticides) which pose a serious threat to their survival and to human health. Plants have the ability to respond to environmental stressors by undergoing rapid transcriptional, translational, and metabolic reprogramming at different cellular compartments in order to balance growth and adaptive responses. However, plants' exceptional responsiveness to environmental cues is highly complex, which is driven by diverse signaling molecules such as calcium Ca2+, reactive oxygen species (ROS), hormones, small peptides and metabolites. Additionally, other factors like pH also influence these responses. The regulation and occurrence of these plant signaling molecules are often undetectable, necessitating nondestructive, live research approaches to understand their molecular complexity and functional traits during growth and stress conditions. With the advent of sensors, in vivo and in vitro understanding of some of these processes associated with plant physiology, signaling, metabolism, and development has provided a novel platform not only for decoding the biochemical complexity of signaling pathways but also for targeted engineering to improve diverse plant traits. The application of sensors in detecting pathogens and soil pollutants like heavy metal and pesticides plays a key role in protecting plant and human health. In this review, we provide an update on sensors used in plant biology for the detection of diverse signaling molecules and their functional attributes. We also discuss different types of sensors (biosensors and nanosensors) used in agriculture for detecting pesticides, pathogens and pollutants.

NK cell receptor modulation in viral infections.

Natural killer (NK) cells play a crucial role in controlling viral infections. The ability to kill infected cells without prior immunization, yet being tolerant to self, healthy cells, depends on the balance of germ-line encoded surface receptors. NK cell receptors are divided to either activating, leading to activation of NK cell and its cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory activity, or inhibitory, providing tolerance for a target cell. The signals from inhibitory receptors dominate and NK cell activation requires stimulation of activating receptors. In viral infections, NK cell interaction with infected cell can result in activation, memory-like NK cell differentiation or NK cell exhaustion, which constitutes one of the viral immune evasion mechanisms. All of these states are associated with the modulation of NK cell receptor expression. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of NK cell receptors and their role in viral infection control, as well as the alterations of their expression observed in acute or chronic infections. We present recently discovered SARS-CoV-2-mediated modulation of NK cell receptor expression and compare them with other human viral infections. Finally, since modulation of NK cell receptor activation gives promising addition to currently used antiviral therapies, we briefly discuss the clinical significance and future perspective of application of agonists or antagonists of activating and inhibitory receptors, respectively. In sum, our review shows that although much is known about NK cell receptor biology, a deeper understanding of NK cell receptors role in viral infections is still needed.

Oil-recovery performance of a superhydrophobic sponge-covered disc skimmer

Frequent oil spill accidents caused by transportation, storage and usage may lead to severe damage on aquatic and ecological environments. Effective methods for rapid oil recovery are urgently in demand. Polyvinyl chloride, hydrophobic nano-SiO2, expanded graphite were separately applied to polyurethane and melamine sponge to fabricate superhydrophobic sponge material. The selected superhydrophobic sponge was introduced to establish sponge - covered disc skimmer. Oil recovery tests of the device were conducted to determine the optimum parameters. The examined operating conditions encompassed sponge thickness, immersion depth, rotational speed, oil slick thickness, operation time. The results showed that the melamine sponge modified by both polyvinyl chloride and hydrophobic nano-SiO2 exhibits super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 150.3°. The absorption capacity for diesel oil can reach 53.89 g/g. The absorption capacity can still achieve 90 % of its initial capacity even after 500 extrusion-absorption separation tests. The results indicate the superiority of the superhydrophobic sponge covered surface in oil recovery over the standard steel surface regardless of the operating conditions. The recovery rate of the device can still achieve 96.4 % of its initial capacity with 95 % efficiency even after 85 h operation. The results suggest the superhydrophobic sponge - covered disc skimmer may have great application perspectives in oil spill recovery.
