Portrayal of Ecological Crisis with Interventions in North East India: An Analytical Study from Nagaland Poetic Perspectives

ABSTRACT Ecological concerns and crises are the priorities in the 21st century throughout the world, Asian countries, and India respectively. This research study investigates the portrayal of environmental and ecological problems and issues in North East India through an analytical lens and perspectives rooted in the poetic descriptions and expressions of the North East Region. By nature, Northeast India is characterized by its unique cultural heritage and rich biodiversity confronting various ecological challenges. Some of the challenges range from habitat loss and deforestation to climate change influences and loss of tribal ecosystems, indigenous knowledge traditional practices, and so on. In this article, the researcher through an analytical examination of poems from North East Indian poets particularly from Nagaland highlights the intricate connections between ecological literature and traditional identity, shedding light on the North Eastern region's ecological concerns and the ways in artistically expressed through poetic discourse. In this study, the following Naga poetic expressions Monalisa Changkija, Temsula Ao, Nini Lungalang, and Easterine Kire are considered. Throughout this paper, the scholar examines how the poets from the Nagaland region try to understand, perceive, interpret, and respond to environmental problems portraying the role of literature in promoting ecological awareness, lobbying, advocacy, and stewardship.

The Two-Way Feedback of Literary and Artistic Emotional Expression and Aesthetic Nurturing from the Perspective of Poetics in the Age of Mathematical Intelligence

Abstract Combined with the analysis of literary and artistic emotional expression, it helps to better cultivate students’ aesthetic ability by building an effective teaching model. This paper develops a hybrid teaching mode for aesthetic cultivation that depends on an online teaching platform, based on the BOPPPS teaching model. To fully analyze the emotional expression of literature and art in the teaching mode, the multimodal features of literature and artworks were extracted from the three perspectives of text features, voice features, and visual features, and the multimodal emotional expression model of literature and artworks was established. Concerning the effectiveness of the blended teaching model of literary emotional expression and aesthetic education established in this paper, five universities in the university city of S province were selected as examples, and corresponding teaching experiments were designed and verified from various perspectives, such as teaching effect, emotional comprehension, and ability perception. The results show that the difference between the pre-and post-test scores of students’ aesthetic awareness in perceived beauty under the blended teaching mode reaches 5.51 points respectively, and the students in the experimental class improve their understanding of the natural beauty of the emotional expression of literary works by 36.82 percentage points compared with the control class. The blended teaching model can effectively enhance students’ aesthetic awareness and aesthetic concepts, to better understand the embedded emotions of literary and artistic works, and the two complement each other to enhance students’ aesthetic core literacy.

A study of Tang poetry translation from the perspective of cognitive poetics

Tang poetry, renowned for its profound cultural significance and artistic expression, presents a unique set of difficulties when rendered into different languages due to its reliance on intricate imagery, rhyme, and rhythm. The study emphasizes the necessity of employing cognitive poetics as a guiding perspective for translators, enabling them to navigate the intricacies of Tang poetry's imagery, rhyme, and rhythm, and suggests to utilize modern translation tools to better convey the emotional depth of the original works, while also providing cultural context to enhance readers' understanding. The cross-cultural communication aspect of Tang poetry translation is explored, as it transcends linguistic boundaries to become a channel for cultural exchange. Translators are challenged to strike a balance between faithfulness to the original poem and adaptability to the target culture's sensibilities. This balance is crucial in preserving the cognitive elements of the original work. To ensure the effective cross-cultural communication of Tang poetry, it is essential to retain the unique imagery that carries profound cultural connotations. The study culminates in offering a set of strategies and suggestions for optimizing Tang poetry translation, including maintaining cultural background, preserving rhyme and rhythm, adding explanatory elements, respecting the poet's style, and ensuring proper literariness in the translation.

On Beowulf's Elegiac Mood: from the Perspective of Cognitive Poetics

Beowulf is the longest narrative poem in ancient England and the most complete and outstanding epic in the early Middle Ages of Europe. It holds an important position in the history of British literature and even European literature. Beowulf mainly tells the great deeds of the hero Beowulf, who is half human and half divine, in subduing monsters and killing poisonous dragons. It has a mythological colour and can be regarded as a heroic mythological epic. It mainly praises Beowulf's heroic spirit, promotes Christian consciousness, and showcases England's unique cultural style during the Anglo-Saxon period. Most studies of Beowulf focus on Germanic culture, literary form, historical background, themes, and symbolic significance portrayed in the poem. By adopting theories in Cognitive Linguistics like prototype, iconicity, perspectives, metaphor, naming in cognitive poetics, this article peruses the elegiac language of Seamus Heaney's Beowulf, illustrating that Beowulf is an elegy of the deaths of heroes, the inconstant fate, the vicissitudes of the world and age, the collapse of tribal society, and ultimately—the elegiac world, and results in that Beowulf is more like an elegy than an epic.

An Intertextual Approach to the Political Poetry of Griselda Alvarez

The political poetry of Griselda Álvarez has played a fundamental role in the history of Mexico by highlighting silenced voices and social struggles through her verses. As the first female governor in Mexico, Álvarez paved the way for women in politics, and her poetry reflects her commitment to social justice and women's rights. Her poems, including Canto a las barbas, address pressing issues such as gender inequality, political oppression, and the fight for freedom, offering a critical and poetic perspective on the political reality of her time. Griselda Álvarez's work reveals the complex nature of art, which allows for connections between the ineffable essence of being and historical social issues. In this study, we use an intertextual analysis to approach her literary creation from a critical perspective, through which we observe that poetry constructs feelings, sensations, and beauty, while also serving as a tool for resistance and denunciation.

Iraj Mirzā: Women and Their Representation in His Poetry

Abstract Iraj Mirzā has a reputation for excessive sexual content in his poetic oeuvre. His “forbidden literature,” so to speak, and to quote Paul Sprachman, has suffered unjustly from charges of frivolity, and while vanity and profanity do indeed feature prominently, these allegations disregard the artistic high-mindedness that is ever-present in the prince’s extensive canon. Recent scholarship has attempted to rehabilitate his reputation by highlighting the formalistic aspects of his poetry as well as by emphasizing the striking intricacies of his particular poetic perspective. In this article, I will delineate Iraj’s line of poetic maturity—especially when interlaced with thoroughgoing thoughts of Constitutional Revolution—and will discuss how, juxtaposing the stylistic decorum of classical Persian poetry with interlocution and colloquialism, he could impact the upcoming movement of new poetry (she‘r-e no) in Iran. More emphatically, I will illuminate how Iraj Mirza’s attitude toward women is self-contradictory—though in some places he seems sympathetic toward women, criticizing the restrictions placed on them in Qajar Iran, he ultimately betrays them by degrading them to the status of sex objects as in ‘Ārefnāmeh, where he depicts the veil as an obstacle to women’s and the country’s progress and he contaminates women’s chastity by justifying his (character’s) raping. Iraj’s boldness in addressing female genitalia and sexual intercourse pushed the boundaries of literature in transitional Qajar era; however, seen from a feminist perspective, his poetry equates the Persian literary woman to the fictionalized demimonde who wished to be sexually abused.

The change in genre structure is a noticeable point when the novel changes from a largescale narrative to a small-scale narrative. Therefore, the problem of genre structure is posed as a fundamental problem when studying the characteristics of the short novel form. Within the scope of this article, applying new theoretical issues about the genre, combining analysis and comparison, from a poetic perspective, we will clarify the main points in the genre structure of the trend of short novels in contemporary Vietnamese literature. Innovations in the genre structure of short novels such as: replacing the historical-event structure with the historical-soul structure, and breaking the one-line structure… must be recognized and evaluated as an attempt to achieve the novel’s function with a limit on page numbers. From explaining the basis of formation, to analyzing and clarifying this feature in the structure of the short novel, the article contributes a famous democratic dialogue about a novel form that is not too unfamiliar but still poses issues that need to be studied in depth.

Life Above the Clouds: Philosophy in the Films of Terrence Malick

As its name implies, Life Above the Clouds: Philosophy in the Films of Terrence Malick gestures to Terrence Malick's ongoing interest in the philosophical qualities of transcendence in cinema. But moreover, this reference—quoted from the character Franziska Jägerstätter (Valerie Pachner) in Malick's A Hidden Life (2019)—also signals a continuing intellectual inquiry into Malick's stirring, provocative, and often puzzling cinematic work. In response to Malick's increased output of films, beginning in the early 2010s until now, many commentators have brought more scholarly attention to his work. Steven DeLay's expansive collection of essays in this anthology proves that the subject of Malick is far from exhausted, and continues to affirm this filmmaker as an arousing artist of aesthetic, philosophical, and cinematic intrigue. DeLay's impressive collection contains nineteen essays from over twenty contributors from a variety of philosophical, theological, literary, and poetic perspectives. While Malick is famously regarded for his early education in philosophy, and there has been much written already on the inherent philosophical themes throughout his filmography, Life Above the Clouds stands, perhaps unexpectedly, as a progressive and expanding addition to the current scholarship. Moreover, the book harbours a larger body of contributors in a single text than any prior substantial publication on Malick.

Thanh Tâm Tuyền and the literature of freedom

Thanh Tâm Tuyền (1936–2006) was a great writer of South Vietnamese literature in the 1954–1975 period. His works are extremely diverse in genres, having made remarkable contributions to the modernization of Vietnamese literature in many aspects. However, in general, critics have drawn more attention to Thanh Tâm Tuyền’s unique innovations in poetry rather than his prose fictions whose achievements are also very notable in fact. On the basis of reading Thanh Tâm Tuyền’s short stories and novels from the perspective of narratology, poetics and existentialism, the paper contributes to analyzing, explicating and interpreting his narrative art. Specifically, we argue that freedom is an important core in Thanh Tâm Tuyền’s fictions and even in his entire writing career. Firstly, Thanh Tâm Tuyền had a special narrative style, with which he did not create narrative worlds, situations and characters as the mediums of his ideological statements and conclusions, but very discrete ones, sometimes full of structural flaws and incompletedness, which, however, can stimulate his readers to freely figure out and contemplate various metaphysical problems in their own way. Second, the article presents an understanding of the nature of life suggested by Thanh Tâm Tuyền’s prose fictions, which is also related to the concept of freedom: his short stories and novels, to some extent, indicate human suffering of living without freedom, with the term understood as being honest with oneself to escape from illusions and invisible impositions.

TENDENCIES OF HUNGARIAN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE IN 2020 AND OTTÓ KISS’S CHILDREN’S MONOLOGUE TITLED A BÁTYÁM ÖCCSE [THE LITTLE BROTHER OF MY BIG BROTHER

The present study discusses Hungarian children’s literature of 2020 with a focus on its decisive works. We analyze works whose authors were nominated for or won the Author of the Children’s Book of the Year prize in the under 12 years age category. Within the corpus of the investigated works two strong genre-based tendencies prevail: tale novel and children’s monologue. We will be discussing how the position of lyric poetry gets re-positioned and becomes the marker of the mystical based on the analyzed works. From a poetics perspective, we will discuss the effects postmodern text-creation strategies have on children’s literature, the lyric self of certain works / role-play of narrators, but we also touch upon the question of which works can be connected to active illustrations. Lastly, we shed light upon what solutions these works have for inspiring the reader to become co-resolvers and co-creators. We will analyze Mari Takács’s Bingaminga és a babkák [Bingaminga and the Babkas], Erzsi Kertész’s Éjszakai Kert [Night Garden], Borbála Szabó’s A János vitéz-kód [The John the Valiant Code], Edina Kertész’s Lajhár, a sztár [Sloth, the Star], András Dániel’s Nincs itt semmi látnivaló [Nothing Here to Be Seen] as well as the prize-winning A bátyám öccse [The Little Brother of My Big Brother] written by Ottó Kiss.

An Analysis of the Translation Choice of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Works in The Collected Works of Foreign Fictions Translated by the Zhou Brothers from the Perspective of André Lefevere’s Three Factors Theory

In The Collected Works of Foreign Fictions, the Zhou brothers translated three short stories written by Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz as translation materials, but not any of his more popular novels. This article discusses such a translation choice made by the Zhou brothers from the perspective of Three Factors Theory proposed by André Lefevere. Firstly, because of a lack of stable patronage, the Zhou brothers intentionally chose obscure materials to translate, in order to get access to publication and avoid retranslation. Henryk Sienkiewicz’s short stories, compared with his novels, were obscure materials. Secondly, from the perspective of poetics, the Zhou brothers were influenced by the poetics of Georg Brandes and believed that “Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novels were driven by profit” and denied the literary value of his novels. Lastly, from the perspective of ideology, the Zhou brothers, especially Lu Xun, emphasized the ideological factors and paid attention to themes such as “small and weak nations” and “being oppressed.” As Poland was a real oppressed nation, the ideology reflected in the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz’s three short stories were consistent with that of the Zhou brothers.

Un/doing Eurocentrism: Claudio Magris, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Gao Xingjian

ABSTRACT This article analyzes two works by Claudio Magris published in dialogue with two Nobel Prize laureates: Letteratura e ideologia [Literature and ideology] (2012) with Gao Xingjian, and La letteratura è la mia vendetta [Literature is my revenge] (2012) with Mario Vargas Llosa. These transnational and transcultural dialogues on writing practices can be understood as paradigm shifts on at least two levels: Magris’s European perspective of border poetics expands into a global perspective; and this leads to a decolonization of the concept of irrationality, which in modernity has mostly been attributed to alterity. The article illustrates the legitimacy of irrationality as part of human existence through a discussion of Vargas Llosa’s El Hablador (1987; The Storyteller, 1989) and Magris’s novel Non luogo a procedere (2015; Blameless, 2017), and the collection of stories Croce del Sud. Tre vite vere e improbabili [Southern cross: Three real and improbable lives] (2020).

Colloquy with Juan José García-Noblejas on understanding communication from the perspective of Aristotle's Poetics

In this interview we will explore García-Noblejas’ thought on public communication, which is deeply marked by his interpretation of Aristotle’s Poetics and influenced by some contemporary thinkers. For García-Noblejas, communication is a service and a form of practical knowledge with five dimensions: ethics, politics, rhetoric, aesthetics, and poetics. Poetics is the most important of these, since its symbolic perspective of the representation of human actions allows us to deeply understand the narrative and dramatic texts typical of journalism, advertising, and propaganda, as well as written and audiovisual fiction. Poetics is the art of creating “possible worlds” in which the reader/spectator recognizes himself (or herself) and with which he dialogues starting from his own identity. García-Noblejas defends public communication that is based on the gift of self and looks to community fruitfulness. He also discusses some frequent pathologies in the media. Finally, he proposes his theory of the Second Navigation to discern the meaning of a text and explains why it is necessary to give a transcendent meaning to the Aristotelian concept of catharsis.

Points of View and Readers' Immersion in Translation: A Neurocognitive Interpretation of Poetic Translatability.

There have been few attempts at applying cultural neuroscience and psychology to the discussion of poetic translatability. This study employs cultural neuroscience and psychology methodologies and forms of evidence to explore the neurocognitive mechanisms by which cross-cultural variations in perspectives during the translation process influence poetic reception in the target culture. The English translation of Chinese poetry is often tasked with the supplement of perspectives and accompanied by cross-cultural variations of immersion. These changes have been substantially discussed from literary and poetic perspectives but remain understudied in terms of their neurocognitive and psychological implications. Through textual analysis of first-person points of view, this study attempts to apply neuroscience to the interpretation of the impact of differences in cross-cultural perspectives in poetry translation. Our findings suggest that a general tendency toward the supplement of first-person perspectives could boost the immersive experience by activating mirror neurons and the temporal parietal junction. These neuroscientific mechanisms underlying the observable cultural phenomenon offer implications for the translation of Chinese poetry in a way that generates brain responses and neurotransmitters similar to the source text. This study demonstrates how research in neuroscience can illuminate findings in cross-cultural communication.

A STUDY OF EXPERIENTIAL ARCHEOLOGY OF A POEM BY FERNANDO PESSOA

This paper describes an experiential archaeology project carried out in three cities in Portugal, Mação, Tomar and Lisbon and analyses, from a poetic perspective, the effects of Time on matter using psychogeography as a method of exploring the urban landscape.In this case psychogeography was used to experience a poem by the great Portuguese modernist writer and poet Fernando Pessoa, in the same way an observer experiences a cityscape. Photographs of ruins that show traces of degradation caused by the passage of time are presented in the form of four condensed visual narratives that visualise four different versions of the poem's verses.
