Research on tourism spatial justice based on residents' perception: A case study on Babao Town of Qilian Mountain National Park (Qinghai area)

As an important nature reserve, national parks play an important role in tourism development, not only in helping residents find employment and maintain vitality, but also in recovering funds, natural education, and environmental protection. Therefore, in the development of national park tourism, it is necessary to adhere to the development concept of spatial justice to ensure the fairness of tourism development. Based on the theory of fairness preference, this paper divides tourism spatial justice into intentional justice, procedural justice, participatory justice, distributive justice, and resultant justice, and discusses the influence relationship between them. Through the questionnaire survey, 241 effective samples are obtained, the structural equation model of tourism spatial justice is constructed, and the path analysis and intermediary effect test are carried out. Research findings: (1) In the tourism spatial justice perception model, procedural justice, participatory justice, and distributive justice all have a significant positive impact on resultant justice, and the path coefficient of distributive justice is the largest. (2) On the path from intentional justice to resultant justice, procedural justice, and participation justice play an intermediary role respectively; Procedural justice and participatory justice, procedural justice and distributive justice play a chain intermediary role respectively. This study divided the dimensions of tourism spatial justice, incorporating participatory justice and distributive justice into traditional equity preference theory, and proved the perception model of tourism spatial justice from the perspective of community residents. At the same time, the interrelationships within the model were verified and explored, exploring the differences between the implementation of tourism spatial justice in national parks and general tourism destinations, to enrich relevant research in the field of tourism spatial justice in national parks and provide reference for the tourism development of national parks. Management implicationsThe development of tourism destinations is pursuing the goal of realizing spatial justice in tourism. The uneven distribution of tourism benefits within national parks is the main reflection of the issue of tourism spatial justice in this study. National park tourism development aims to improve the perception of fairness among local residents and optimize the distribution plan of tourism benefits. The perception of other forms of justice is influenced by the issue of procedural justice among residents. The only way to ensure effective justice in the tourism space within national parks is by ensuring that residents' rights are not compromised in tourism development. In the future, the construction of national parks should attach great importance to considering the distribution and rights of residents, avoiding the problem of residents being able to participate but unable to make profits, in order to better achieve the overall function of national parks.

Unveiling spatial patterns of disaster impacts and recovery using credit card transaction fluctuations

The objective of this study is to examine spatial patterns of disaster impacts and recovery of communities based on fluctuations in credit card transactions (CCTs). Such fluctuations could capture the collective effects of household impacts, disrupted accesses, and business closures and thus provide an integrative measure for examining disaster impacts and community recovery. Existing studies depend mainly on survey and sociodemographic data for disaster impacts and recovery effort evaluations, although such data has limitations, including large data collection efforts and delayed timeliness results. Also, there are very few studies have concentrated on spatial patterns of disaster impacts and short-term recovery of communities, although such investigation can enhance situational awareness during disasters and support the identification of disparate spatial patterns of disaster impacts and recovery in the impacted regions. This study examines CCTs data Harris County (Texas, USA) during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 to explore spatial patterns of disaster impacts and recovery duration from the perspective of community residents and businesses at ZIP-code and county scales, respectively, and to further investigate their spatial disparities across ZIP codes. The results indicate that individuals in ZIP codes with populations of higher income experienced more severe disaster impact and recovered more quickly than those located in lower income ZIP codes for most business sectors. Our findings not only enhance the understanding of spatial patterns and disparities in disaster impacts and recovery for better community resilience assessment but also could benefit emergency managers, city planners, and public officials in enhanced situational awareness and resource allocation.

Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has posed a huge threat to global public health. The spread, prevention, and control of emergent infectious diseases are associated with several social health determinants. Social interventions addressing the social health determinants are crucial for controlling the transmission of virus. Objective: We aimed to explore the effectiveness of social interventions implemented in Western China to obtain new insights for controlling emergent global infectious diseases. Methods: A web-based study was conducted in March 2020 in Western China. Data on government-implemented social interventions were collected using a structured questionnaire from the perspectives of community residents. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to explore the effectiveness of social interventions. Results: A total of 1,450 community residents were included in the current study, and 88 COVID-19 patients were included after PSM. Among 1,450 community residents, >80% reported that community responses to COVID-19 reached them through radio, slogans, and gatekeepers in the community, and almost all of them provided a positive response to social interventions. Residents who positively responded to these interventions were more likely to adopt behaviors that prevent the spread of COVID-19 than COVID-19 patients (P<0.05). Conclusion: Our data suggest that the timely provision of social interventions has been effective in Western China, and these findings could be used to establish international multi-sector collaborative efforts to successfully control COVID-19. We conclude that social interventions provided in the communities are crucial for the control of COVID-19.

A Mixed-methods Study to Understand Food Environments and Grocery Shopping Patterns of Community Residents in Underserved Neighborhoods in Tampa, Florida

ABSTRACT A mixed methods study was conducted to better understand food access, food retail store environment, and perspectives of community residents on their grocery store shopping patterns and access to healthy foods in underserved, predominantly African American neighborhoods. GIS mapping, grocery store observations (n = 4), a food access and grocery store environment survey (n = 126), and focus groups (n = 48) were used. The results indicate that these neighborhoods have a low density of grocery stores, and only two out of four grocery stores meet the standard for a healthy retail store. Barriers to getting healthy foods and solutions to improve food access are discussed.

Community Resident’s Opinions and Perceptions on the Effectiveness of Waste Management and Recycling Potential in the Umkhanyakude and Zululand District Municipalities in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa

Despite new environmental laws and regulations in South Africa during the last two decades, especially around municipal solid waste management, there is little emphasis towards waste minimization through recycling. Whereas most waste management research in South Africa has focused on urban municipalities, not much is known regarding the effectiveness of waste management services and recycling challenges in rural areas. This paper reports on the effectiveness of waste management practices from the perspective of community residents in selected rural districts of the KwaZulu-Natal province. A random sample comprised of 333 community residents was selected for questionnaire-administered interviews. Based on the opinions and perceptions of respondents, the provision of waste management services is generally inadequate. Apart from the successful collection of domestic solid wastes (66.7%) from households by municipalities, the collection of recyclable waste materials from illegal waste dumps (75%) and from households (68.7%) are not being adequately provided. Thus, levels of dissatisfaction regarding municipal collection services are very high (97.3%) amongst respondents. Furthermore, systematic recycling initiatives that involve communities are largely non-existent and most (96.7%) respondents lack relevant technical knowledge on waste recycling and how it can be carried out effectively through waste segregation at source and other processes.

An Exploration of Rural Community Branding Efforts from the Perspective of Community Residents

Community brand identity, as measured by brand image and positioning symbols, typically fails to reflect the perceptions of the residents of the community. The current study, focused on residents in four rural and culturally distinct communities in the mid-western United States, finds that residents feel neither agreement nor disagreement with either image or positioning constructs of community brand identity. The results suggest a need to strengthen image and positioning constructs and we urge co-creation of the community brand with greater involvement of the local residents. Recommendations are given for co-creating a meaningful community brand to further community economic development.

Perceptions of the Environment for Eating and Exercise in a Rural Community

Objective To understand how members of a rural community perceive the effect of the built, natural, and social environments on their food choice and physical activity behaviors. Methods A constructivist community environmental assessment was conducted including 17 individual qualitative interviews, 2 focus groups, and photo elicitation (n = 27) in a rural northeastern community where over 60% of the adult population is overweight or obese. Results Participants described social, natural, and physical environmental factors that influenced their food choice and physical activity behaviors. Overweight and obesity were variably presented as an individual and/or a collective problem. Participants described conflicting goals for food choice and physical activity in the community, and an interrelationship between the social and physical environments. Conclusions and Implications A community environmental assessment provides a view of the physical and social environments from the perspective of community residents that can serve as a foundation for locally tailored, community-based approaches to obesity prevention.
