Vasily Sesemann and Ksenia Miloradovich: Intercrossing Themes and Biographies

The article is devoted to two talented representatives of the Russian university philosophical community of the first quarter XX century: Vasily Sesemann and Ksenia Miloradovich. It’s shown that their university routes are very similar, as far as it was possible for male and female biographies of that time. The most complete list of their original works published before 1922 is given. The thematic focus of their publications and journals in which they were published is compared and the translation activity is analyzed. This allows us to see that in publications names of the “youth”: Vasily Sesemann, Ksenia Miloradovich, Sergey Hessen most often are supported by famous philosophers N.O. Lossky and S.E. Radlov. Based on the material of Ksenia Miloradovich's essay about the Philosophical Society, it’s emphasized that they were acquainted with each other in the philosophical workshop. The publications of Miloradovich and Sesemann made in the genre of reviews and not previously mentioned in their personal bibliographies, were revealed. It’s also shown that two historical events: the First World War (1914-1918) and the revolution of 1917 influenced the publishing capabilities of both philosophers. Nevertheless, until 1922 they continued to be active participants in the processes of reviving philosophical publications and the philosophical society. Lives of Sesemann and Miloradovich had the pathos of the drama of political arrests that trimmed their philosophical biographies, but both managed to make their contribution to the history of Russian philosophy. The article emphasizes that the enthusiasm of their creativity and the drama of their destinies can serve as an example of vitality and loyalty to the work.

Polonika w Preszowie. Stare druki ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich krakowskiej proweniencji

The article examines the Polonica (polish prints) stored at the State Scientific Library of Prešov (hereafter: the SSL of Prešov), an institution founded in 1952. Since its establishment, employees of the former bibliographic department have compiled inventories of literature, personal and thematic bibliographies, and have conducted research on and prints included in the collections of the SSL of Prešov. The research in the field of the history of book culture was carried out in the library collections by researchers from universities, including those from abroad. The author presents an overview of the publications printed to date, focusing on the Polonica in the collections of the SSL of Prešov, especially those of Kraków provenance.

Documents of personal life in personal bibliographies. Exploratory research

Theses/purpose of the article – The main purpose of the article is to present the selection of personal life documents in personal bibliographies, published in Poland until 1985. Research methods – The method of analysis and criticism of personal bibliographies was used, paying attention to the selection of material, in particular the registration of personal life documents. Results and conclusions – The research undertaken shows that personal bibliographies published prior to 1985 include various types of personal life documents, but only a small part of them do so. The vast majority of the analyzed material omit such documents, although they are an extremely important source of information in scientific research, particularly useful to other fields, for example biographical studies. Personal bibliographies should record personal life documents to a much greater extent, not only those published but also in manuscripts and in the form of iconographic, audio and film documents.

Dear readers of Les / Wood,We present the second issue of Les / Wood in 2018. It contains one review and five scientific articles. The topics of the articles are related to wood anatomy, dendrochronology, wood properties, gluing of wood and composites, as well as questions of digitalization of education.The first author of two articles is Jaša Saražin, an early career researcher and doctoral student at the Department of Wood Science and Technology, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana (DWST). His first article on the dendrochronology of oak in the transition between the sub-Mediterranean and temperate continental climatic zones in Slovenia, is co-authored by two early stage researchers who are publishing in Les / Wood for the first time. Dr. Angela Balzano works at the DWST as a researcher, while Giulia Resente, who received her master’s degree at the University of Padua, worked at the DWST in the framework of an international praxis. For Giulia Resente this is the first publication in a scientific journal. Congratulations. In another article, Jaša Saražin and Milan Šernek present the quality of the adhesive bonding between wood and steel.Alan Crivellaro from the University of Padua and co-authors present new findings in the field of wood anatomy and special wood structures. Their article presents how »blue rings« record the lack of lignification due to the effects of environmental change and how this affects wood quality. For Marco Reverenna, this is also the first scientific article that has been published. Congratulations. The other co-authors are experienced scientists from various universities in Italy and from Cambridge University. Željko Gorišek and his co-authors present the less-known non-native and partially invasive wood species Ailanthus altissima studied in the framework of the ­APPLAUSE project. Bogdan Šega and Milan Šernek prepared a review article on cross-laminated wood. Jože Kropivšek highlighted a conceptual model of the digitalization of education, exemplified by higher educati­on in the wood sector in Slovenia. In this issue we also present news relevant in the field of the wood sector. Four articles are written in Slovene and two in English. According to the objectives of the journal, the articles in Slovene help to maintain and develop the Slovenian professional terminology and communicate new findings to a Slovene audience. With articles in English, however, we intend to address the wider international scientific and professional audience. The visibility of the articles is assured through indexation in bibliographic databases. Les / Wood is indexed by the CAB Abstracts database, and since 2017 all the articles have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which, among other things, enables their visibility on the World Wide Web. The articles are also referred to in the personal bibliographies of the researchers in COBISS and SICRIS databases. Furthermore, the authors can make them available through databases such as ResearchGate and Google Scholar. To increase their visibility, we are preparing for indexation in the Open Access Journals (DOAJ) database. This will be hopefully followed by inclusion in other databases, such as SCOPUS.The editors wish to thank all the authors for publishing in Les / Wood. We also gratefully acknowledge the referees who undertook their work professionally, ethically, quickly and with much care. The Library of Belarusian-Russian University: The history and contemporaneity

The Belarusian-Russia University was established on the basis of Mogilev State Technical University, in accordance with the Agreement signed between the government of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation (Mogilev, January 19, 2001). New objectives of the library are set up due to new programs to be taught at the University. Today, the library supports 16 education programs as provided by the Belarus education standards, and 7 programs as provided by the Russian standard. The author discusses in particular: collection development funding; delivery of books published by Belarus and Russia publishers’; establishing the repository “Belarusian-Russian University E-library and digital catalog databases, and among them The Proceedings of the Belarusian-Russian University Researchers, «Authors’ abstracts. Theses», «Digital Documents»; library’s publishing activities, personal bibliographies of the prominent university scholars and researchers). The Library also acts as the coordination regional methodological center. The author concludes that the Library of Belarusian-Russian University plays a significant role in education and science promotion, opens access to the cultural heritage and intellectual resources for the students, professors and scientists, and offers relevant information products and services.

Tools and instruments for needs assessment, monitoring and evaluation of health research capacity development activities at the individual and organizational level: a systematic review.

BackgroundIn the past decades, various frameworks, methods, indicators, and tools have been developed to assess the needs as well as to monitor and evaluate (needs assessment, monitoring and evaluation; “NaME”) health research capacity development (HRCD) activities. This systematic review gives an overview on NaME activities at the individual and organizational level in the past 10 years with a specific focus on methods, tools and instruments. Insight from this review might support researchers and stakeholders in systemizing future efforts in the HRCD field.MethodsA systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar. Additionally, the personal bibliographies of the authors were scanned. Two researchers independently reviewed the identified abstracts for inclusion according to previously defined eligibility criteria. The included articles were analysed with a focus on both different HRCD activities as well as NaME efforts.ResultsInitially, the search revealed 700 records in PubMed, two additional records in Google Scholar, and 10 abstracts from the personal bibliographies of the authors. Finally, 42 studies were included and analysed in depth. Findings show that the NaME efforts in the field of HRCD are as complex and manifold as the concept of HRCD itself. NaME is predominately focused on outcome evaluation and mainly refers to the individual and team levels.ConclusionA substantial need for a coherent and transparent taxonomy of HRCD activities to maximize the benefits of future studies in the field was identified. A coherent overview of the tools used to monitor and evaluate HRCD activities is provided to inform further research in the field.

What's Past is Prologue: A Scoping Review of Recent Public Health and Global Health Informatics Literature.

Objective: To categorize and describe the public health informatics (PHI) and global health informatics (GHI) literature between 2012 and 2014.Methods: We conducted a semi-systematic review of articles published between January 2012 and September 2014 where information and communications technologies (ICT) was a primary subject of the study or a main component of the study methodology. Additional inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to filter PHI and GHI articles from the larger biomedical informatics domain. Articles were identified using MEDLINE as well as personal bibliographies from members of the American Medical Informatics Association PHI and GHI working groups.Results: A total of 85 PHI articles and 282 GHI articles were identified. While systems in PHI continue to support surveillance activities, we identified a shift towards support for prevention, environmental health, and public health care services. Furthermore, articles from the U.S. reveal a shift towards PHI applications at state and local levels. GHI articles focused on telemedicine, mHealth and eHealth applications. The development of adequate infrastructure to support ICT remains a challenge, although we identified a small but growing set of articles that measure the impact of ICT on clinical outcomes.Discussion: There is evidence of growth with respect to both implementation of information systems within the public health enterprise as well as a widening of scope within each informatics discipline. Yet the articles also illuminate the need for more primary research studies on what works and what does not as both searches yielded small numbers of primary, empirical articles.Conclusion: While the body of knowledge around PHI and GHI continues to mature, additional studies of higher quality are needed to generate the robust evidence base needed to support continued investment in ICT by governmental health agencies.

Methods of Creating a Personal Bibliography of a Composer’s Opus

ABSTRACTThe article deals with different approaches to creating a personal bibliography of a composer’s opus. Methods of bibliographic descriptions of musical works in general bibliographies were examined with special emphasis on a thorough examination of methods of creating personal bibliographies of Slovenian composers from the beginning to the present. Special attention was given to the bibliographies of Emil Adamič, the first one dating in 1937 and the new one from the year 2004, and the bibliography of Vasilij Mirk. Three different approaches were identified. Bibliographic records are arranged according to the form of musical works, performers or types of music, furthermore, the records are arranged either alphabetically by the title or chronologically by the year of creation. Methods of creating a bibliography of a composer’s opus are presented for the first time resulting in guidelines for the organisation of bibliographic descriptions that will help bibliographers in their future endeavours.

Commission VII: Jewish Philosophy (2008-2012)

This report of the Commission for Jewish Philosophy is based on information and personal bibliographies sent to the President of the Commission by over forty scholars in the field via the Questionnaire for SIEPM Commission Reports. Like the previous report that appeared in the Bulletin de philosophie médiévale 49 (2007), 27-44, it is thus intended to be representative and not at all exhaustive. The report features a selected bibliography, arranged alphabetically by author, of over two hundred studies in the field of medieval Jewish Philosophy, written in Western languages between the years 2008-2012. In addition, it provides a list of editions and translations in the field that have appeared during this period, as well as a list of Ph.D. dissertations in the field. The report also mentions some of the most important international conferences that have taken place, and some of the major projects. In general, the authors have tried to present a picture of the study of medieval Jewish Philosophy over the past five years, what has been its focus, what it has accomplished, and where it seems to be going. Finally, the authors address certain important issues that were raised at the meeting of the Commission for Jewish Philosophy at the 2012 SIEPM Congress in Freising.

An evidence‐based approach to the child who drools saliva

Drooling is a common dysfunction in children with cerebral palsy and may also affect neurologically unimpaired children. It causes significant social handicap to both children and their families. The data in this article are supported by a Medline search (November 2008) utilising the keywords drooling, sialorrhea, botulinum toxin, salivary duct ligation and also by the use of the personal bibliographies of the senior authors. The majority of the published literature for drooling is of level III/IV evidence. Multiple therapeutic interventions are available for paediatric drooling. These are most appropriately introduced in a stepwise progression from behaviour therapy, to pharmacotherapy to surgical procedures.

Roles for pharmacy in combatting counterfeit drugs

Objectives:To describe (1) the international scope of counterfeit drugs, (2) international and U.S. anticounterfeiting initiatives, and (3) the enhanced roles and challenges facing pharmaceutical organizations and individual pharmacists to thwart counterfeit drugs. Data sources:PubMed and Ovid from 1970 to 2008 using the search terms counterfeit drugs, counterfeit pharmaceuticals, and counterfeit medicines, with English as the limiting term. Nonprimary literature sources included the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Web site (www.fda.gov) from 1990 to 2008 using the search term counterfeit drugs, presentations from meetings or workshops attended or accessed via the Internet, and Web sites of professional organizations. Additional resources were identified from personal bibliographies collected by the author and bibliographies of gathered articles. Data synthesis:Counterfeit drugs—defined as those containing no active ingredient, an incorrect amount of active ingredients, incorrect ingredient, and/or unapproved labeling and packaging—represent an unquantified problem of international proportions. The existing situation has been facilitated by inconsistent national regulatory oversight, disparate unlinked databases, lack of unified anticounterfeiting actions, and inability to track the distribution of domestically produced or imported drug products between, among, and within nations. In the United States, several important anticounterfeiting initiatives announced by FDA in 2004 have been implemented but the benefits of others, such as electronic tracking of a drug's movement through the U.S. distribution chain to a dispensing pharmacy, will not be realized in the near future. The role of pharmacists as patient educators, prudent purchasers, and detectors of counterfeit drugs can typically be accomplished with minimal added expense or work; however, the impact of electronic tracking on pharmacies' expenses and workflow is unknown. Pharmacists need to be included in efforts to thwart receipt of counterfeit drugs by patients, but this must be accomplished with minimal negative impact on pharmacy practices. Conclusion:Although consistent detection of counterfeit drugs is difficult, pharmacists can take several reasonable measures to lessen the chances they are dispensing counterfeit drugs. However, the increased role of pharmacists is accompanied by several important challenges involving increased expense and altered business practices.

Implementation of authority control in the Cobiss.SI library information system, Slovenia

Describes a process of gradual implementation of authority control in the COBISS library information system in Slovenia (COBISS.SI). The CONOR.SI initial authority database contained, at the time of its implementation, over 24,000 authority records for personal authors, mostly Slovenian, from publishing production of the last few years. It was created automatically based on personal bibliographies of Slovenian researchers and the Slovenian national bibliography for monographs in COBISS.SI. Also describes: major conceptual issues related to the entire implementation logic of authority control; the upgrading of software for shared cataloguing required by the implementation of authority control; and the implementation process itself. Presents some experiences related to cataloguing with authority control within COBISS.SI together with plans on the subsequent implementation of authority control for other types of headings.

Vitamin C and blood pressure--an overview.

Laboratory and some epidemiological studies suggest that antioxidants, such as vitamin C, are protective for cardiovascular disease. This protective effect may be mediated through blood pressure (BP). This is the first systematic review of epidemiological studies of vitamin C and BP. Published cross-sectional studies, prospective studies and trials in humans were identified that examined the association between vitamin C intake or plasma vitamin C levels and BP. Relevant references were located by MEDLINE search 1966-1996, EMBASE search 1980-1996, by searching personal bibliographies, books and reviews and from citations in located articles. Cross-sectional data were available from 18 populations. Ten of 14 reported an inverse association between plasma vitamin C and BP and three of four reported an inverse association with vitamin C intake. The two non-randomised and four randomised controlled trials were all small. Of the randomised trials one reported a significant decrease in BP, one a non-significant decrease and two were uninterpretable. We found a consistent cross-sectional association between higher vitamin C intake or status and lower BP, though no study controlled adequately for confounding by other dietary factors. Further cross-sectional studies are required to establish whether an independent association exists. If this is shown to be the case larger and longer term trials will be needed to confirm the association is causal. Potentially the impact on cardiovascular disease of a modest change in mean population vitamin C intake is large.

Fruit and vegetables, and cardiovascular disease: a review.

Increased interest in the potential cardio-protective effects of fruit and vegetables is currently unsupported by systematic reviews of the reported associations of these foods with risk. All ecological, case-control, cohort studies and unconfounded trials in humans were eligible for inclusion. Eligible outcomes were symptomatic coronary heart disease, stroke and total circulatory disease. Only studies of diet that reported on fresh fruit and vegetables or a nutrient which could serve as a proxy (reversing the usual direction of inference) were included. MEDLINE (1966-1995) and EMBASE (1980-1995) were searched using the terms cerebrovascular disorder, coronary heart disease, fruit(s) and vegetable(s) as keywords. Personal bibliographies, books and reviews were also searched, as were citations in located reports. For coronary heart disease nine of ten ecological studies, two of three case-control studies and six of 16 cohort studies found a significant protective association with consumption of fruit and vegetables or surrogate nutrients. For stroke three of five ecological studies, none (of one) case-control study and six of eight cohort studies found a significant protective association with consumption of fruit and vegetables or surrogate nutrients. For total circulatory disease, one of two cohort studies reported a significant protective association. No attempt was made to arrive at a summary measure of the association because of the differences in study type, study quality and the different exposure measures used. Although null findings may be underreported the results are consistent with a strong protective effect of fruit and vegetables for stroke and a weaker protective effect on coronary heart disease. Greater use of food-based hypotheses and analyses, would complement existing nutrient-based analyses and help guide the search for underlying causes.

Vitamin C and Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review

Laboratory studies suggest that antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, are important inhibitors of atherosclerotic lesions. Most epidemiological reviews have considered all antioxidants together. This review seeks to clarify the current state of knowledge specifically concerned with vitamin C. All ecological studies, case-control studies, prospective studies and trials in humans that examined the association between vitamin C intake or blood levels of vitamin C and cardiovascular disease were included. Relevant references were located by MEDLINE search for articles published from 1966 to 1996, by an EMBASE search for articles published from 1980 to 1996, by searching personal bibliographies, books and reviews and from citations in located articles. For coronary heart disease four of seven ecological studies, one of four case-control studies and three of 12 cohort studies found a significant protective association with vitamin C intake or status. For strokes two of two ecological studies, none of one case-control study and two of seven cohort studies found a significant protective association. For total circulatory disease, two of three cohort studies reported a significant protective association. The evidence, albeit limited, is consistent with vitamin C having protective effect against stroke whereas the evidence that vitamin C is protective against coronary heart disease is less consistent. The lack of an association for coronary heart disease could be explained in terms of there being a true lack of effect, dietary measurement error, a threshold effect, and effect of seasonal variations in intake, an interaction with other dietary constituents or a relatively short duration of follow-up.

Preparation of personal bibliographies using a large computing facility.

Large modern computing facilities, which normally include text editing, sorting, and searching, are now available to most scientists. Such features are invaluable for a personal bibliography, which may be prepared according to the taste of the user. Our method requires only that the references be less than or equal to 120 or 240 characters (spaces) in length. The references may be written randomly, in which case searching is performed for retrieval, with some order, when searching and sorting may be used for retrieval, or with extensive order, when, in addition, indexes may be prepared by a single command. Two bibliographies with extensive order are described. Suggestions for starting a bibliography by those unfamiliar with computers are given in the Appendix.
