An Anatomically Shaped Mitral Valve for Hemodynamic Testing.

In vitro modeling of the left heart relies on accurately replicating the physiological conditions of the native heart. The targeted physiological conditions include the complex fluid dynamics coming along with the opening and closing of the aortic and mitral valves. As the mitral valve possess a highly sophisticated apparatus, thence, accurately modeling it remained a missing piece in the perfect heart duplicator puzzle. In this study, we explore using a hydrogel-based mitral valve that offers a full representation of the mitral valve apparatus. The valve is tested using a custom-made mock circulatory loop to replicate the left heart. The flow analysis includes performing particle image velocimetry measurements in both left atrium and ventricle. The results showed the ability of the new mitral valve to replicate the real interventricular and atrial flow patterns during the whole cardiac cycle. Moreover, the investigated valve has a ventricular vortex formation time of 5.2, while the peak e- and a-wave ventricular velocities was 0.9m/s and 0.4m/s respectively.

Experiments on large-scale structures in fully developed turbulent pipe flow

The experimental results reported in present paper represent contributions from the Cottbus large pipe facility to DFG-priority program SPP 1881: Turbulent Superstructures. Fundamental questions regarding turbulence statistics and structures in fully developed turbulent pipe flow were addressed, utilizing thermal and optical measuring techniques integrated into the pipe facility. The facility enables unique in-situ calibration for the hot-wire probe and it has full optical access that allows performing Particle Image Velocimetry and 3D Lagrangian Particle Tracking measurements, resulting in consistent and accurate pipe flow data. A streamwise-spanwise field of view up to ≈20×2 pipe radii has been set for both optical techniques with 4–8 high resolution cameras for a friction Reynolds number range of 8⋅102≤R+≤18⋅103. The setup enabled field of measurements with an unprecedented dynamic range in turbulent pipe flow at high Reynolds numbers with spatial resolution better than 1 vector/mm. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Shake-The-Box algorithm were used, highlighting energy contents of the large-scale motions in fully developed turbulent pipe flow regime.

A step toward lifting the fog off mist explosions: Comparative study of three fuels

Gases, vapors, and dusts are all potential explosion threats; however, mists should also be taken into account. Indeed, dozens of accidents involving hydrocarbon mists were identified in incident surveys. Mist explosions continue to occur, highlighting the need to evaluate and assess the validity of present approaches for assessing mist ATEX risks and to establish reliable standardized safety parameters for fuel mists.In a modified apparatus based on the 20 L explosion sphere, three fluids of industrial interest were investigated. A new siphon injection system comprising a Venturi junction was installed, offering a wide range of dispersion performances. This system was controlled by a specifically developed program, ensuring the apparatus's versatility and adaptability to various tested liquids. It enables precise control of the gas carrier flow, liquid flow, and injection and ignition durations, allowing modification of the dilution rate of a particular droplet size distribution (DSD). The mist cloud dispersed in the 20 L sphere was characterized by determining its DSD using an in-situ laser diffraction sensor and by performing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Mists of kerosene, diesel and ethanol were then subjected to tests to assess their lower explosive limit (LELmist), minimum ignition energy (MIE), maximum explosion pressure (Pmax), and rate of pressure rise (dP/dtmax). For instance, it was found that the LELmist of ethanol, kerosene Jet A1, and diesel fuel for a DSD averaged at 8–10 μm reach 77, 94, and 93 g/m3 respectively. This LELmist was also shown to increase with increasing DSD in the case of Jet A1 mists. A sensitivity study was also performed to emphasize the impact of parameters such as the fuel type, the DSD, and the mist temperature. Findings showed that the explosion severity is strongly influenced by the chemical nature and the volatility of the dispersed fuel. Moreover, controlling the sphere temperature was proven to be a crucial step when using such apparatus for the evaluation of the explosibility of mists. An evaporation model based on the d2 law was also developed to visualize the vapor-liquid ratio before ignition. These findings have already led to the development of a new procedure for determining safety standards for hydrocarbon mists, as well as tools to assess mist explosion risks. They have proven that it is possible to evaluate the ignition sensitivity and explosion severity of fuel mists using a single well-known apparatus.

Double-stranded and single-stranded well-entangled DNA solutions under LAOS: A comprehensive study

The nonlinear rheological behaviors of concentrated double-stranded (ds) and single-stranded (ss) DNA solutions were studied under standard oscillatory and large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) deformations. To decompose the total stress into the elastic and viscous components, the raw nonlinear waveforms were analyzed using the MITlaos software package. We found that smooth and rigorous intracycle strain stiffening and shear thinning dominate the elastic and viscous decomposition, respectively, of the ds DNA sample. In contrast, the ss DNA sample exhibits initial intracycle strain stiffening, followed by a transition region and a terminal flow behavior. Insights into the nonlinear response of the DNA solutions were achieved by performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) at a wide range of imposed strain amplitudes and two angular frequencies. The rheo-PIV results of the ds DNA sample show a substantially modified flow field with distinct strain-driven shear bands at both angular frequencies examined. The bands formed by the ss DNA sample were weak even at the maximum strain amplitude. The results from this work are insightful from a traditional bulk rheological perspective, as well as for further single-molecular studies.

Performing particle image velocimetry using artificial neural networks: a proof-of-concept

Traditional programs based on feature engineering are underperforming on a steadily increasing number of tasks compared with artificial neural networks (ANNs), in particular for image analysis. Image analysis is widely used in fluid mechanics when performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), and therefore it is natural to test the ability of ANNs to perform such tasks. We report for the first time the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and fully connected neural networks (FCNNs) for performing end-to-end PIV. Realistic synthetic images are used for training the networks and several synthetic test cases are used to assess the quality of each network’s predictions and compare them with state-of-the-art PIV software. In addition, we present tests on real-world data that prove ANNs can be used not only with synthetic images but also with more noisy, imperfect images obtained in a real experimental setup. While the ANNs we present have slightly higher root mean square error than state-of-the-art cross-correlation methods, they perform better near edges and allow for higher spatial resolution than such methods. In addition, it is likely that one could with further work develop ANNs which perform better that the proof-of-concept we offer.

Dynamics of the precessing vortex rope and its interaction with the system at Francis turbines part load operating conditions

At part load conditions, Francis turbines experience the formation of a cavitation vortex rope at the runner outlet whose precession acts as a pressure excitation source for the hydraulic circuit. This can lead to hydro-acoustic resonances characterized by high pressure pulsations, as well as torque and output power fluctuations. This study highlights the influence of the discharge factor on both the vortex parameters and the pressure excitation source by performing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and pressure measurements. Moreover, it is shown that the occurrence of hydro-acoustic resonances in cavitation conditions mainly depend on the swirl degree of the flow independently of the speed factor. Empirical laws linking both natural and precession frequencies with the operating parameters of the machine are, then, derived, enabling the prediction of resonance conditions on the complete part load operating range of the turbine.

Automatic dynamic mask extraction for PIV images containing an unsteady interface, bubbles, and a moving structure

When performing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements in complex fluid flows with moving interfaces and a two-phase flow, it is necessary to develop a mask to remove non-physical measurements. This is the case when studying, for example, the complex bubble sweep-down phenomenon observed in oceanographic research vessels. Indeed, in such a configuration, the presence of an unsteady free surface, of a solid–liquid interface and of bubbles in the PIV frame, leads to generate numerous laser reflections and therefore spurious velocity vectors. In this note, an image masking process is developed to successively identify the boundaries of the ship and the free surface interface. As the presence of the solid hull surface induces laser reflections, the hull edge contours are simply detected in the first PIV frame and dynamically estimated for consecutive ones. As for the unsteady surface determination, a specific process is implemented like the following: i) the edge detection of the gradient magnitude in the PIV frame, ii) the extraction of the particles by filtering high-intensity large areas related to the bubbles and/or hull reflections, iii) the extraction of the rough region containing these particles and their reflections, iv) the removal of these reflections. The unsteady surface is finally obtained with a fifth-order polynomial interpolation. The resulted free surface is successfully validated from the Fourier analysis and by visualizing selected PIV images containing numerous spurious high intensity areas. This paper demonstrates how this data analysis process leads to PIV images database without reflections and an automatic detection of both the free surface and the rigid body. An application of this new mask is finally detailed, allowing a preliminary analysis of the hydrodynamic flow.

Manufacturing of patient‐specific optically accessible airway models by fused deposition modeling

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to use rapid prototyping technology, in this case fused deposition modeling (FDM), to manufacture 2D and 3D particle image velocimetry (PIV) compatible patient‐specific airway models.Design/methodology/approachThis research has been performed through a case study where patient‐specific airway geometry was used to manufacture a PIV compatible model. The sacrificial kernel of the airways was printed in waterworks™ which is a support material used by Stratasys Maxum FDM devices. Transparent silicone with known refractive index was vacuum casted around the kernel and after curing out, the kernel was removed by washing out in sodium hydroxide.FindingsThe resulting PIV model was tested in an experimental PIV setup to check the PIV compatibility. The results showed that the model performs quite well when the refractive index (RI) of the silicone and the fluid are matched.Research limitations/implicationsDrawbacks such as the surface roughness, due to the size of the printing layers, and the yellowing of the silicone, due to the wash out of the kernel, need to be overcome.Originality/valueThe paper presents the manufacturing process for making complex thick walled patient‐specific PIV models starting from a strong workable sacrificial kernel. This removable kernel is obtained by switching the building and the support materials of the FDM machine. In this way, the kernel was printed in support material while the building material was used to support the kernel during printing. The model was tested in a PIV setup and the results show that the airway model is suitable for performing particle image velocimetry.

Turbulence intensity inversion induced by the mass-reducing hole in an air or helium filled hard disk drive

Since its introduction, the mass-reducing hole in the middle of an actuator arm has been investigated as a source of turbulent flow in the space between a pair of co-rotating disks in an air-filled Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The present study investigates the effect of the mass-reducing hole by performing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and numerical calculation in both air and helium. Helium was selected as an alternative medium due to its high kinematic viscosity which is expected to stabilize the turbulent flow around the actuator arm. A double-scale experimental apparatus was built to simulate a commercial drive. The same model was simulated numerically. The investigations were performed for two different positions of the actuator arm and two angular speeds of the disk (1,000 and 3,000 rpm; corresponding to 4,000 and 12,000 rpm in a 3.5-inch commercial drive). Experimental data was collected at the inter-disk mid-plane and ensemble-averaged to compute the turbulence intensity. The results show that, as expected, the helium flow induces lower turbulence intensity than the air flow at low speeds of rotation. In particular, the helium flow stabilizes the turbulent flow around the Slider Suspension Unit (SSU) more effectively than the air flow. However, at high speeds of rotation, the helium flow generates a higher level of turbulence intensity immediately behind the mass-reducing hole than the air flow. The physical mechanism of the switch is explained.

선체 표면 거칠기가 경계층 변화에 미치는 영향

해양의 다양한 환경에 노출된 선체 표면의 거칠기를 일반화 하여 모델 실험을 PIV기법을 적용하여 회류수조에서 수행하였다. 모델의 유동방향 표면 거칠기의 폭에 기초하여 본 연구에 적용된 레이놀즈수 Re=1.0<TEX>$\times$</TEX>103에서 유동가시화, 시간평균 속도장 및 와도장을 상호 평가를 통하여 유동특성을 조사하였다. 와의 생성과 소멸 메커니즘을 통해 와류의 중심은 표면 거칠기 높이의 0.5H로 나타났다. 또한 거칠기 계수가 증가함에 따라 와의 크기와 비례하고, 와의 생성위치도 상부와 전방으로 이동하였다. The experimental study of the hull surface roughness on a developing turbulent boundary layer which exposed to a variety of operating environments were investigated by performing particle image velocimetry(PIV) in a circulating water channel. The Reynolds number based on the width of roughness was about Re=1000. the roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensionally. the flow visualization, time-mean velocity fields and vorticity fields to measure the flow characteristics were obtained. The investigation shows that the vortex generation and its progress inside the walls. And the center of the vortex was located at the middle of the height of the surface roughness.

공초점 레이저 주사 현미경을 이용한 혈구 유동가시화 및 세포공핍층 측정에 관한 연구

In the present study, we employed the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) system to visualize the blood flow field with <TEX>$1{\times}1{\mu}m^2$</TEX> spatial resolution. Based on the confocal microscopic image of red blood cells (RBCs), we performed the velocity vector field measurement and evaluated characteristics of cell migration from the cell depleted layer thickness calculation. The rat and mouse's blood were supplied into a micro glass tubes in vitro. The line scanning rate of confocal microscopy was 15 kHz for a <TEX>$500{\times}500$</TEX> pixels image. As a result, the red blood cell itself can be used as a tracer directly without any kind of invasive tracer particle to get the velocity vector field of blood flow by performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique.

Validation of a numerical 3-D fluid–structure interaction model for a prosthetic valve based on experimental PIV measurements

A numerical 3-D fluid–structure interaction (FSI) model of a prosthetic aortic valve was developed, based on a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software program using an Arbitrary Eulerian Lagrangian (ALE) formulation. To make sure of the validity of this numerical model, an equivalent experimental model accounting for both the geometrical features and the hydrodynamic conditions was also developed. The leaflet and the flow behaviours around the bileaflet valve were investigated numerically and experimentally by performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. Through quantitative and qualitative comparisons, it was shown that the leaflet behaviour and the velocity fields were similar in both models. The present study allows the validation of a fully coupled 3-D FSI numerical model. The promising numerical tool could be therefore used to investigate clinical issues involving the aortic valve.

PIV measurements of turbulent boundary layer over a rod-roughened wall

The effects of surface roughness on a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) were investigated by performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was about Re θ = 1000–1500. The roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the ratio of the boundary layer thickness to the roughness height was k/ δ = 0.025. Along the streamwise direction, self-preserving forms of the streamwise mean velocity and the turbulent Reynolds stress were obtained. Spatially developing characteristics of the rough wall TBL were examined. Introduction of the roughness elements augmented turbulent stresses in the region of y < 4–5 k s, where k s is an effective sand roughness height. We found that the effective sand roughness height ( k s) is a more appropriate length scale for representing the extent of roughness effect rather than the roughness height ( k). By using PIV measurements, the effects of surface roughness on the turbulence structure in the roughness sublayer were examined and compared with previous direct numerical simulation (DNS) results. Iso-contours of the mean velocity and Reynolds stress in the roughness sublayer obtained by PIV were in very good agreement with DNS findings. Vortex structures induced by the rod-roughness and strong sweep events were also examined.

Numerical modeling of microbubble backscatter to optimize ultrasound particle image velocimetry imaging: initial studies

We have developed a promising non-invasive ultrasound-based method for performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) in vivo. This method, termed echo PIV, provides multi-component blood velocity data with good (∼2 ms) temporal resolution. The method takes advantage of the non-linear ultrasound backscatter characteristics of small gas-filled microbubbles (ultrasound contrast) that are seeded into the blood stream. In this study, we use a numerical model to explore potential areas to focus future work in echo PIV. Ultrasound backscatter from encapsulated microbubbles was modeled using a modified Rayleigh–Plesset equation (Church model, 1995), taking into account the protein/lipid shell layer as a thick, mass-conserving incompressible fluid surrounded by incompressible blood-like fluid. The equation of motion was solved numerically to characterize the fundamental and second harmonic components of the backscattered pressure. Results show a significant advantage in using the second harmonic component for echo PIV, especially for small bubble sizes less than 3 μm in diameter at 2.2 MHz frequency. The effect of the shell thickness ranging from 10 to 500 nm on the vibration amplitude of the bubble was examined and it is shown that the presence of the shell requires mechanical index (MI)>0.2 of incident pressure amplitude to improve bubble detectability. Analysis of the effect of pulse length shows a tradeoff between axial resolution (short pulse length) and bubble detectability (longer pulse length) will most likely be required. The effect of varying MI between 0.1 and 0.6 was also studied at a center frequency of 2.2 MHz and the results indicate that the resonance of the second harmonic is maximized for bubbles with diameter of approximately 2.75 μm. Bubble non-linearities at MI>0.2 induced a resonant frequency shift away from the integer multiple of the incident frequency in the second harmonic backscatter. For a given bubble size, there is a combination of optimal incident frequency and mechanical index range that maximizes the ratio of the second harmonic compared to the fundamental. This resonant frequency decreases with increasing bubble radius. Further, a narrow bandwidth pulse is shown to increase signal strength. Both of these effects may cause conflict with factors governing spatial resolution. Optimization of the incident frequency, microbubble size and mechanical index to enhance bubble detectability will depend on the particular clinical application. These theoretical predictions provide further understanding of the physics behind our echo PIV technique, and should be useful for guiding the design of echo PIV systems.
