Quantifying Tennis Player Performance: A Linear Regression Approach

This paper uses linear regression to quantitatively analyse the performance of players in the men's singles competition at Wimbledon 2023. Firstly, the data is processed by observationally analysing the match data to ensure compliance with the tournament standards and regulations. Next, key metrics were extracted, including short-term and long-term metrics, as well as the introduction of Serve Indicator to consider the impact of serve advantage on player performance. Then, the most important independent variables were identified through Random Forest feature analysis and parameters were calculated using least squares to construct performance indicators for use in linear regression. Finally, through data visualisation and analysis, it was found that player 1 usually performs better at critical moments, showing greater stability and consistency, while player 2 shows greater variability and unpredictability. Overall, the linear regression method in this paper is valuable and practical for quantifying tennis players' performance, and can provide a reference for players and coaches to help them better analyse and improve their performance.

Does Motor Imagery Training Improve Service Performance in Tennis Players? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Motor imagery training is a common mental strategy used by tennis players and coaches to improve learning and performance; however, the effect of motor imagery training on service performance in tennis players is questionable. This review aims to consolidate existing research regarding the effects of motor imagery training on the service performance of tennis players. A systematic search was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, using PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and SPORTDiscus to identify articles published until December 2023. Eligible studies comprised controlled trials that investigated the impact of motor imagery on service performance outcomes in tennis players. The methodological quality of individual studies was assessed using the Cochrane RoB-2 and ROBINS-I tools. GRADE was applied to assess the certainty of the evidence. Nine trials including 548 participants met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that motor imagery training improved service accuracy and technique but did not affect service speed or return accuracy in tennis players. In conclusion, the certainty of the evidence that motor imagery training may be effective in improving service accuracy and technique in tennis players is low to very low. However, more experimental work is needed to obtain stronger conclusions.

A novel comparative study of NNAR approach with linear stochastic time series models in predicting tennis player's performance

BackgroundPrediction models have gained immense importance in various fields for decision-making purposes. In the context of tennis, relying solely on the probability of winning a single match may not be sufficient for predicting a player's future performance or ranking. The performance of a tennis player is influenced by the timing of their matches throughout the year, necessitating the incorporation of time as a crucial factor. This study aims to focus on prediction models for performance indicators that can assist both tennis players and sports analysts in forecasting player standings in future matches.MethodologyTo predict player performance, this study employs a dynamic technique that analyzes the structure of performance using both linear and nonlinear time series models. A novel approach has been taken, comparing the performance of the non-linear Neural Network Auto-Regressive (NNAR) model with conventional stochastic linear and nonlinear models such as Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Exponential Smoothing (ETS), and TBATS (Trigonometric Seasonal Decomposition Time Series).ResultsThe study finds that the NNAR model outperforms all other competing models based on lower values of Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). This superiority in performance metrics suggests that the NNAR model is the most appropriate approach for predicting player performance in tennis. Additionally, the prediction results obtained from the NNAR model demonstrate narrow 95% Confidence Intervals, indicating higher accuracy and reliability in the forecasts.ConclusionIn conclusion, this study highlights the significance of incorporating time as a factor when predicting player performance in tennis. It emphasizes the potential benefits of using the NNAR model for forecasting future player standings in matches. The findings suggest that the NNAR model is a recommended approach compared to conventional models like ARIMA, ETS, and TBATS. By considering time as a crucial factor and employing the NNAR model, both tennis players and sports analysts can make more accurate predictions about player performance.

Influence of Motor Imagery Modality on First-Serve Performance in Tennis Players.

Motor imagery (MI) is frequently used in tennis players. This pilot study aimed to assess whether the MI modality and preference of skilled tennis players could influence their service performance when using MI before serving first balls. Twenty expert players (Mage = 18.6years) completed the movement imagery questionnaire (third version) to assess their MI modality scores (internal visual, external visual, and kinesthetic) and their MI preference. Participants completed 4 experimental counterbalanced sessions spread over 4weeks, each including the completion of 20 first-serve balls in match condition. The sessions included a control condition (i.e.,only physical practice trials) and three MI conditions during which the players had to mentally imagine themselves performing a serve according to one of the imagery modalities, either internal visual, external visual, or kinesthetic, before serving. The percentage of success, the speed of the service balls (measured by a tablet with SWING VISION and a radar gun), and an efficiency score were recorded and then evaluated by experts and served as performance indicators and dependent variables. The results of this study showed that players benefited from MI before serving and that almost a third of the participants achieved a higher percentage of success and efficiency scores when using their preferred MI modality. These results lead us, in an applied way, to suggest to skilled tennis players to determine their MI preference and to have recourse to the mental simulation of a successful serve before serving the first balls in match condition.

USE OF CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS OF LAWN TENNIS PLAYERS IN RELATION TO THEIR PSYCHOMOTOR SKILLS

Biorhythm or circadian rhythm represents a biological process through which the human body adopts a rhythmicity, which can be measured once every 24 hours. An analytical analysis of human biorhythms and their interaction in the synergy of psychomotor capabilities of lawn tennis players was performed. The reliability of performances in official competitions is conditioned by the integral preparation of the athlete, the components of which are optimal technical and tactical, physical, functional and mental training, taking into account the manifestation of his biorhythms. Biorhythmology is currently of great theoretical and practical importance in sports training. However, certain principles and provisions of biorhythmology in sports are insufficiently highlighted and scientifically justified, but, without a doubt, research in this direction gives the expected practical result. A series of aspects of psychophysiology are highlighted, the solution of which largely depends on the success of using biorhythms to increase the efficiency of sports activities. The dynamics of the circadian rhythms of the psychophysiological functions are reflected in the volume and intensity of the applied training and competition tasks, as well as in the physical recovery after their performance. In order to identify the relationship between biorhythms and sports and psychomotor performances of athletes, we analyzed the results obtained in competitions by tennis students (the best and worst of the season). The analysis of the obtained results showed that the best sports and test results are presented by tennis players during the optimal phases of the biorhythm, and the worst - during critical periods. It is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the biorhythm when predicting and analyzing the performances of athletes in certain competitions and the test parameters that characterize their psychomotor capabilities as determining factors of sports and tactical abilities. It has been established that psychomotor indices and sports performance of tennis players are interconnected with the periods of biorhythms. In the negative period and on the critical days, the greatest decrease in the reactions to the moving object (RMO) was observed, the decrease in the state-impact force, which provides the force of the deep (postural) muscles of the trunk, involved in maintaining both statodynamic and dynamic, one of the factors of motor-coordinating qualities of tennis players.

Change-of-Direction Speed Assessments and Testing Procedures in Tennis: A Systematic Review.

J Strength Cond Res 37(9): 1888-1895, 2023-Change-of-direction speed (CODS) plays an essential role in tennis match play, and CODS performance is, therefore, commonly assessed and monitored in tennis players. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to describe test characteristics, performance metrics, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and test outcomes of tests that are used to assess CODS in tennis players. A literature search conducted on PubMed and SPORTDiscus yielded 563 results. After applying the eligibility criteria, a total of 27 studies were included in the present review. Ten unique CODS tests were identified. 505 test variations were most frequently used across all studies, and total time required to complete the test was the predominant performance metric investigated. Intrasession test-retest reliability ranged from "moderate" to "excellent." Intersession test-retest reliability as well as the effects of tennis performance, sex, and age on CODS performance were unclear given the subject demographics and the limited number of studies that investigated these aspects. In conclusion, most studies included CODS tests that exhibit longer COD entry and total distances but similar COD angles to those seen during tennis match play. All CODS tests have at least "moderate" intrasession test-retest reliability. However, to improve CODS assessment methods and to increase our current understanding of CODS performance in tennis players, there is a need to conduct more research on the intersession test-retest reliability, construct validity, and the effects of sex, age, and tennis performance and to investigate other performance metrics that might provide additional insights into CODS (e.g., phase-specific performance variables).

ABSTRACT Introduction Maintaining body balance is a prerequisite for good tennis practice. Therefore, the demands of technical movements for competitive playability are achieved only after players have improved balance. Objective Analyze the impacts of balance training on the performance of tennis players. Methods 24 male tennis college students, 18 to 21 years old, were selected and divided into experimental and control groups. The intervention took place under a specific balance training protocol for eight weeks, and data were collected in the experimental group before and after the intervention. Results The test time with eyes closed in unipodal support, Romberg test, eyes closed standing, and walking standing in the experimental group was 37.340 ± 14.382s, 67.250 ± 30.275s, 21.070 ± 7.887s and 4.510 ± 0.540s respectively, showing statistical superiority over the control group. Conclusion After eight weeks of balance training exercise intervention, compared with the subjects without instability training exercise intervention, the subjects’ static and dynamic balance ability after eight weeks of training were significantly improved. COMPARISON OF OPEN AND CLOSED STANCE FOREHAND STROKES AMONG YOGYAKARTA JUNIOR TENNIS PLAYERS

<p><strong>Background</strong>: Tennis develops faster nowadays, and tennis players are able to powerfully hit from a variety of angles. Effective training and planning will help achieve these goals by designing safe, effective and productive programs to optimize the performance of tennis players. <strong>Objective</strong>: This study examined the effectiveness of open and closed stance forehand stroke in terms of percentage of success, accuracy and also investigated whether there is a relationship between the level of accuracy and the choice of forehand stroke used by tennis players. <strong>Method</strong>: Participants were divided into two groups, namely males and females who were included in the junior players category of 12 – 16 years old. The participants were tested using two skill tests for the percentage of success and the level of accuracy.<strong> Results:</strong> It was found that the closed stance forehand stroke had a much better percentage of success and accuracy in junior tennis players, but the difference was not significant. In addition, male players showed more precision and success in this study, and also accuracy did not have a significant influence on the choice of forehand stroke among junior tennis players. <strong>Conclusion</strong>: This study can improve the design of the exercise program for teaching closed and open stance strokes.</p><p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0456/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

Acute effects of vibration foam rolling and local vibration during warm-up on athletic performance in tennis players.

Athletes are currently fond of vibration foam rollers (VFRs) and commercial portable vibration percussion devices (PVPDs). It is still unknown whether using these devices during warm-up has an immediate impact on athletic performance. A randomized block design was used in this study. The acute effects of VFR and PVPD on tennis players’ athletic performance during warm-up were compared. For the countermovement jump (CMJ), reactive strength index (RSI), and hexagon test (HT), the difference in performance between all interventions was significant (p = 0.007–0.034, η2p = 0.266–0.364). Only those who received VFR had significantly different CMJ and HT results when compared to the control group (CMJ height = 53.18 ±4.49 cm, p = 0.03, d = 1.26; HT time = 10.73 ±0.4 s, p = 0.03, d = 1.12). Participants’ RSI values were significantly different after VFR (RSI = 2.01 ±0.11 cm·mm–1, p = 0.012, d = 1.76) and PVPD (RSI = 1.99 ±0.11 cm·mm–1, p = 0.025, d = 1.52) compared to the control group. Therefore, when using VFR and PVPD as part of warm-up protocols for tennis players of varying skill levels, VFR could have an immediate positive effect on power, reactive strength, and change of direction performance, while PVPD could immediately improve reactive strength performance.

Effects of isoinertial or machine-based strength training on performance in tennis players.

The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of two 8-week neuromuscular training (NMT) interventions on selected physical indicators in young tennis players. Twenty-four junior male tennis players were assigned to a machine-based (MG) (n = 8), flywheel (FG) (n = 8) or a control training group (CG) (n = 8). Tests at baseline, week 4 and 8 included: countermovement jump (CMJ); speed (S; 5, 10, 15 m); agility (right [AR] and left [AL]); serve velocity (SV) and medicine ball throws (MBT; overhead [O], forehand [FH], backhand [BH]). MG and FG attained large positive effects at week 4 in CMJ, S 10 m; AR, AL and MBT FH only in FG. Regarding inter- to post-test, MG achieved large positive effects in MBT O, FH and both groups in BH. Large negative effects appeared for FG in S 5 and 10 m and AR and AL. Both NMT interventions led to positive effects from baseline to week 4 measures in CMJ, S 5 m, 10 m and agility and at week 8 in MBT. Conducting the same NMT for a longer period of time did not lead to the same improvements and other negative effects in FG appeared. Results indicate that performing these interventions with little exercise variability or load management, especially after technical-tactical sessions, could interpose further beneficial outcomes and initial gains could be impaired.

Mental imagery and tennis: a review, applied recommendations and new research directions

Mental Imagery (MI), which can be defined as the brain’s ability to recreate motor experiences in the absence of actual actions, is a mental strategy commonly used by tennis players and coaches in the context of learning and performance. The purpose of this review was to examine the MI use, interventions and effects on the performance of tennis players. Preferred reporting items for reviews and meta-analyses guidelines were employed and research studies were collected via SCOPUS, PubMed, PsycINFO, Science Direct and Google Scholar, in English and French, from the earliest record up to August 2021. Forty-one studies met the inclusion criteria. This review (number 2020-05-87) resulted in a wide variety of MI use in tennis and its beneficial effects, whatever the level or age of the players. MI interventions generally improve motor performance, motivational or affective outcomes. Moreover, MI is frequently combined with other mental skills and integrated in pre-performance routines including breathing, positive self-talk, and/or concentration. This study also highlighted the weak representation of female tennis players that’s why future research is needed to better explore the gender effect in MI interventions in tennis. Overall, MI appears to be beneficial for players, whatever their age or level, and should be incorporated in training programs. Practical implications are discussed.

Acute Sleep Restriction Affects Sport-Specific But Not Athletic Performance in Junior Tennis Players.

Little is known about the effect of sleep restriction (SR) on different domains of athletes' physical performance. Therefore, the aim of this randomized, counterbalanced, and crossover study was to evaluate the effect of acute SR on sport-specific technical and athletic performance in male junior tennis players. Tennis players (N = 12; age 15.4 ± 2.6 y) were randomly allocated to either a sleep-restriction condition (SR, n = 6), where they experienced acute sleep restriction the night before the test session (≤5 h of sleep), or to a control condition (CON, n = 6), where they followed their habitual sleep-wake routines. Testing procedures included 20 left and right serves, 15 forehand and backhand crosscourt shots, and a repeated-sprint-ability test (RSA). The accuracy of serves and shots was considered for further analysis. One week later, players of SR joined CON, and players of CON experienced SR, and all test procedures were repeated. Significant decrease in the accuracy of right (-17.5%, P = .010, effect size [ES] = 1.0, moderate) and left serve (-14.1%, P = .014, ES = 1.2, large), crosscourt backhand (-23.9%, P = .003, ES ≥ 2.0, very large), and forehand shot (-15.6%, P = .014, ES = 1.1, moderate) were observed in SR compared to CON, while RSA was similar in both conditions. Coaches and athletes at the team and individual level should be aware that 1 night of SR affects sport-specific but not athletic performance in tennis players.

Compare the effect of static and dynamic stretching on hamstring muscle flexibility and on agility performance in tennis players

Hamstring strains are one of the most common and recurrent injuries in the sporting world. Lack of hamstring flexibility was the single most important characteristic of hamstring injuries in athletes. Research indicated that flexibility measurements in tennis players were significantly lower in sit and reach compared with non-tennis athlete. Hamstring stretching may be considered as an intervention in both prevention and treatment of hamstring strains. Also hamstring muscles play a significant role in agility function in tennis players. This interventional study was conducted to assess and compare the effect of static and dynamic stretching on hamstring muscle flexibility and on agility performance in tennis players. Sixty healthy tennis players were assessed for the inclusion and exclusion criteria and randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A received static stretching and Group B received dynamic stretching for 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Pre-intervention and post intervention evaluation was done by 4 outcome measures- Modified Sit and Reach Test, Active knee extension, Shuttle run test and Tennis specific agility test for both the groups. The result showed statistically significant improvement in hamstring muscle flexibility in both groups but dynamic stretching is more effective than static stretching. Dynamic stretching showed significant improvement in agility performance but static stretching did not show any positive or negative effect on agility performance.

Effects of a Tennis Match on Perceived Fatigue, Jump and Sprint Performances on Recreational Players

Background: Tennis is an intermittent sport, characterized by hundreds of repetitive explosive efforts, including accelerations, and jumps. A single match can last up to 5 hours and players are called to play several matches often separated by less than 48h of recovery. Objective: The study aimed to investigate the effects of a standardized tennis match on perceived fatigue and jump and sprint performances on a group of recreational tennis players and to observe if such variables were affected by residual effects of fatigue 24 hours after the match. Methods: Twelve recreational tennis players performed a 120 min match. Before, immediately after and 24h after the match, players completed a set of three countermovement jumps, three 10m sprints, and reported their perception of general fatigue. Results: Significant differences between the three conditions have been found for the perceived fatigue: indeed fatigue was higher both in the immediate post (F(1,10)= 54.422, η2 = 0.845, p<0.001) and 24h post-match (F(1,10)= 10.947, η2 = 0.523, p=0.08), with respect to the pre-match condition. No significant differences were detected in the other variables. Conclusion: During a tournament, the performance of tennis players may be weakened and the recovery prejudiced. To identify fluctuations of and factors linked to fatigue may help tennis practitioners to apply adequate recovery strategies with athletes, limiting performance decrements within a tournament, and indirectly preventing injuries.

Research on the specific movement of the head in tennis strokes

Technique is one of the aspects that has the most relevant influence on tennis player performance. Searching for more efficient and effective technique, by means of the application of biomechanical laws, is a constant among coaches and researchers. This article deals with a very concrete subject in tennis technique: the position of the head during the impact phase of tennis strokes. Biomechanical aspects of the strokes will also be considered, as well as other relevant aspects such as fixing the gaze during the stroke and the stretching-shortening cycle.

Exploring the Importance of Players’ Characteristics and Performance on Serve and Return of Serve in Winning the Women’s Singles Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments

Sports analytics has become very popular in recent years. Many researchers have been using the tools and technique to study tennis player performance in various aspects during matches. However, much of the studies were performed on male players while much less attention were made on female players. This study explores the female players’ characteristics and serve performance that leads to winning matches in women’s singles 2018 Grand Slam tennis tournaments. Using data provided by the official website of the Women Tennis Association (WTA), 1016 single matches in all four 2018 Grand Slam Tournaments were analysed to evaluate winning traits in tennis specifically looking at the two most important strokes in tennis which are the serve and return of serve. Additionally, other personal player characteristics that would influence the match outcomes were also evaluated. To achieve the objectives of the study, odds ratio and chi-square test were used to compare between the match winner and match loser. The study revealed that percentage of first serve return won (PFSRW) has the highest odds ratio value (OR=1.263) followed by the percentage of first serve won (PFSW) with odds ratio equal to 1.244. These showed that having a good first serve, plays an important factor in increasing the winning odds as compared to second serve either in serve or in return of serve. This study also reveals that a taller player had the advantage over a shorter player for faster serve speed (p-value<0.05).

Effects of Beetroot Juice Ingestion on Physical Performance in Highly Competitive Tennis Players.

Beetroot juice (BJ) contains high levels of inorganic nitrate (NO3−) and its intake has good evidence in increasing blood nitrate/nitrite concentrations. The ingestion of BJ has been associated with improvements in physical performance of endurance sports, however the literature in intermittent sports is scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate whether BJ could improve physical performance in tennis players. Thirteen well-trained tennis players (25.4 ± 5.1 years) participated in the study during their preparatory period for the tennis season. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups and performed a neuromuscular test battery after either BJ or placebo (PLA) consumption. Both trials were executed on two separate days, in randomized order, with one week of wash out period. The test battery consisted of serve velocity test (SVT), countermovement jump (CMJ), isometric handgrip strength (IHS), 5-0-5 agility test (5-0-5), and 10 m sprint (10-m). No significant differences were found in SVT (1.19%; p = 0.536), CMJ (0.96%; p = 0.327), IHS (4.06%; p = 0.069), 5-0-5 dominant and nondominant side (1.11–2.02%; p = 0.071–0.191) and 10-m (1.05%; p = 0.277) when comparing BJ and PLA ingestion. Thus, our data suggest that low doses of BJ (70 mL) consumption do not enhance tennis physical performance.

Diferencias en las estadísticas de competición de tenis en los juegos olímpicos de Río de Janeiro 2016

El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer las estadísticas de competición de tenis en los JJOO de Río de Janeiro 2016. Para ello, se analizaron 282 sets de los 128 partidos en los que participaron un total de 128 tenistas (64 jugadores y 64 jugadoras). Los datos fueron seleccionados de la información publicada en la Web Oficial de la Federación Internacional de Tenis (http://www.itftennis.com/olimpiadas/cuadros). Los resultados mostraron que el género masculino obtuvo valores estadísticamente superiores en variables relacionadas con el servicio, mientras género femenino obtuvo mejores valores en variables relacionadas con el resto. Con respecto a la lateralidad, no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre zurdos y diestros en el género masculino. En el género femenino, las jugadoras zurdas obtuvieron unos valores significativamente superiores en el porcentaje de puntos ganados con el primer y segundo saque, número de puntos de break y número de puntos ganados al resto. La información obtenida en este trabajo establece unos parámetros de rendimiento que pueden resultar de utilidad para establecer objetivos y evaluar el rendimiento de los jugadores de tenis.

Effects of ultrasound-guided percutaneous neuromodulation on the activation of hip abductors in a professional tennis player: a single case study

Abstract Background Ultrasound-guided percutaneous neuromodulation (US-guided PNM) is defined as electric stimulation of a peripheral nerve at some point of its trajectory via a needle, with analgesic objectives and for the improvement of muscle function. Hip abductor muscles play an important role in the performance of tennis players, participating primarily in the transfer of forces in situations such as stopping and starting, changes in direction and even hitting the ball. Aims The aims of this study were to confirm the effects of US-guided PNM on the superior gluteal nerve on strength and muscle activity in hip abductors and the reduction of the Q angle of the knee during a single-legged squat in a high performance athlete. Material and Methods The subject was a high performance athlete aged 17, without traumatic injuries to the lower limb. The study was conducted in the installations of AY360° Salud y Deporte. The following variables were measured before and after the intervention: force (MVIC), muscle activity (RMS) using surface electromyography and the knee Q angle during a single-legged squat using Kinovea video analysis. A treatment protocol was performed under ultrasound guidance using a PES current with 6 Hz pulses and a pulse duration of 250 μs. In total, 5 applications of 15 seconds' duration were applied with the help of a pointer. Results Improvements were obtained for strength measurements, from a MVIC of 0.13 mV (50.72%) to 0.26 mV (100%), for muscle activity RMS improved from 13.26% to 23.96%, and degrees changed from 23.6° to 21°. Conclusions The US-guided PNM technique, according to the parameters studied, appears to be a useful tool for the improvement of the cited variables.
