Post-Quantum Security Overview of the Public Key Infrastructure

Recently, there has been an increasing focus on the investigation of quantum-safe solutions for a variety of applications. One of the pressing issues that needs to be made quantum secure is the TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol. Proposals for its implementation have been discussed in several articles. The TLS protocol is based on PKI (Public Key Infrastructure). In addition, there are many other PKI applications that are used every day in both private and enterprise environments, so securing their use is essential. The methods currently developed to ensure adequate security will become obsolete with the advent of quantum computers. According to the Cloud Security Alliance, by around 2030, the performance of quantum computers will increase to the point where the risk of vulnerability of traditionally encrypted data will be very high. It is therefore important to make the right preparations in time to ensure that we can transform our solutions into quantum secure solutions by the time quantum computing becomes a real threat. In this paper, we present an analysis to this end, presenting quantum-safe solutions already in use and, in comparison, proposing new, well-performing solutions for a quantum-resistant PKI.

Fingerprints of Qubit Noise in Transient Cavity Transmission.

Noise affects the coherence of qubits and thereby places a bound on the performance of quantum computers. We theoretically study a generic two-level system with fluctuating control parameters in a photonic cavity and find that basic features of the noise spectral density are imprinted in the transient transmission through the cavity. We obtain analytical expressions for generic noise and proceed to study the cases of quasistatic, white and 1/f^{α} noise in more detail. Additionally, we propose a way of extracting the noise power spectral density in a frequency band only bounded by the range of the qubit-cavity detuning and with an exponentially decaying error due to finite measurement times. Our results suggest that measurements of the time-dependent transmission probability represent a novel way of extracting noise characteristics.

Automated Quantum Volume Test

As a benchmark for the overall performance of quantum computers, quantum volume has the advantage of being able to reflect the depth of running quantum circuits. But, the quantum volume test code provided by IBM needs to be executed manually, and the simulation result of the quantum simulator is used as the result of the volume test, so that users cannot quickly and accurately test the quantum volume of the actual quantum computer required. In response to this problem, this paper designs an automated quantum volume test program. The program automatically generates quantum volume sequences, selects the number of executions of quantum circuits, and defines real quantum computers to facilitate users to perform quantum volume tests on quantum computers provided by the IBM Quantum Cloud Platform. Simultaneously, according to the automated test program, the quantum volume of IBM’s four small superconducting quantum computers was tested. The test results show that (1) the quantum computer is different, and the qubit layout and execution times ntrials are the same, will cause the quantum volume is uncertain; (2) the same quantum computer, whether ntrials is the same, the robustness of qubit coupling will be affected to a certain extent.

Decoherence-based exploration ofd-dimensional one-way quantum computation: Information transfer and basic gates

We study the effects of amplitude and phase damping decoherence in d-dimensional one-way quantum computation (QC). Our investigation shows how information transfer and entangling gate simulations are affected for d>=2. To understand motivations for extending the one-way model to higher dimensions, we describe how d-dimensional qudit cluster states deteriorate under environmental noise. In order to protect quantum information from the environment we consider the encoding of logical qubits into physical qudits and compare entangled pairs of linear qubit-cluster states with single qudit clusters of equal length and total dimension. Our study shows a significant reduction in the performance of one-way QC for d>2 in the presence of Markovian type decoherence models.
