How to experimentally evaluate the adiabatic condition for quantum annealing

We propose an experimental method for evaluating the adiabatic condition during quantum annealing (QA), which will be essential for solving practical problems. The adiabatic condition consists of the transition matrix element and the energy gap, and our method simultaneously provides information about these components without diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. The key idea is to measure the power spectrum of a time domain signal by adding an oscillating field during QA, and we can estimate the values of the transition matrix element and energy gap from the measurement output. Our results provides a powerful experimental basis for analyzing the performance of QA.

Quantum annealing with special drivers for circuit fault diagnostics

We present a very general construction for quantum annealing protocols to solve Combinational Circuit Fault Diagnosis problems that restricts the evolution to the space of valid diagnoses. This is accomplished by using special local drivers that induce a transition graph on the space of feasible configurations that is regular and instance independent for each given circuit topology. Analysis of small instances shows that the energy gap has a generic form, and that the minimum gap occurs in the last third of the evolution. We used these features to construct an improved annealing schedule and benchmarked its performance through closed system simulations. We found that degeneracy can help the performance of quantum annealing, especially for instances with a higher number of faults in their minimum fault diagnosis. This contrasts with the performance of classical approaches based on brute force search that are used in industry for large scale circuits.

Mean field analysis of reverse annealing for code-division multiple-access multiuser detection

Code-division multiple-access (CDMA) multiuser detection is a kind of signal recovery problem. The main problem of CDMA multiuser detection is to estimate the original signal from the degraded information. In CDMA multiuser detection, the first-order phase transition happens. The first-order phase transition degrades the estimation performance. To avoid or mitigate the first-order phase transition, we apply adiabatic reverse annealing (ARA) to CDMA multiuser detection. In ARA, we introduce the initial Hamiltonian, which corresponds to the prior information of the original signal into quantum annealing (QA) formulation. The ground state of the initial Hamiltonian is the initial candidate solution. By using the prior information of the original signal, ARA enhances the performance of QA for CDMA multiuser detection. We evaluate the typical ARA performance of CDMA multiuser detection by means of statistical mechanics using the replica method. At first, we consider the oracle cases where the initial candidate solution is randomly generated with a fixed fraction of the original signal in the initial state. In the oracle cases, the first-order phase transition can be avoided or mitigated by ARA if we prepare for the proper initial candidate solution. We validate our theoretical analysis with quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The theoretical results to avoid the first-order phase transition are consistent with the numerical results. Next, we consider the practical cases where we prepare for the initial candidate solution obtained by commonly used algorithms. We show that the practical algorithms can exceed the threshold to avoid the first-order phase transition. Finally, we test the performance of ARA with the initial candidate solution obtained by the practical algorithm. In this case, ARA cannot avoid the first-order phase transition even if the initial candidate solution exceeds the threshold to avoid the first-order phase transition.

Message-passing Algorithm of Quantum Annealing with Nonstoquastic Hamiltonian

Quantum annealing (QA) is a generic method for solving optimization problems using fictitious quantum fluctuation. The current device performing QA involves controlling the transverse field; it is classically simulatable by using the standard technique for mapping the quantum spin systems to the classical ones. In this sense, the current system for QA is not powerful despite utilizing quantum fluctuation. Hence, we developed a system with a time-dependent Hamiltonian consisting of a combination of the formulated Ising model and the "driver" Hamiltonian with only quantum fluctuation. In the previous study, for a fully connected spin model, quantum fluctuation can be addressed in a relatively simple way. We proved that the fully connected antiferromagnetic interaction can be transformed into a fluctuating transverse field and is thus classically simulatable at sufficiently low temperatures. Using the fluctuating transverse field, we established several ways to simulate part of the nonstoquastic Hamiltonian on classical computers. We formulated a message-passing algorithm in the present study. This algorithm is capable of assessing the performance of QA with part of the nonstoquastic Hamiltonian having a large number of spins. In other words, we developed a different approach for simulating the nonstoquastic Hamiltonian without using the quantum Monte Carlo technique. Our results were validated by comparison to the results obtained by the replica method.

Quantum Phase Transition in Fully Connected Quantum Wajnflasz–Pick Model

We construct a quantum Wajnflasz-Pick model that is a generalized quantum Ising model, and investigate a nature of quantum phase transitions of the model with infinite-range interactions. Quantum phase transition phenomena have drawn attention in the field of quantum computing as well as condensed matter physics, since the phenomena are closely related to the performance of quantum annealing (QA) and adiabatic quantum computation (AQC). We add a quantum driver Hamiltonian to the Hamiltonian of classical Wajnflasz-Pick model. The classical Wajnflasz-Pick model consists of two-level systems as with the usual Ising model. Unlike the usual Ising spin, each of the upper and the lower levels of the system can be degenerate. The states in the upper level and the lower level are referred to as upper states and lower states, respectively. The quantum driver Hamiltonian we introduced causes spin flip between the upper and the lower states and state transitions within each of the upper and the lower states. Numerical analysis showed that the model undergoes first-order phase transitions whereas a corresponding quantum Ising model, quantum Curie-Weiss model, does not undergo first-order phase transitions. In particular, we observed an anomalous phenomenon that the system undergoes successive first-order phase transitions under certain conditions. The obtained results indicate that the performance of QA and AQC by using degenerate two-level systems can be controlled by the parameters in the systems.

Quantum annealing of the p -spin model under inhomogeneous transverse field driving

We solve the mean-field-like $p$-spin Ising model under a spatio-temporal inhomogeneous transverse field to study the effects of inhomogeneity on the performance of quantum annealing. We find that the problematic first-order quantum phase transition that arises under the conventional homogeneous field protocol can be avoided if the temperature is zero and the local field is completely turned off site by site after a finite time. When these ideal conditions are not satisfied, a new series of first-order transitions appear, which prevents us from driving the system while avoiding first-order transitions. Nevertheless, under these non-ideal conditions, quantitative improvements can be obtained in terms of narrower tunneling barriers in the free energy landscape. A comparison with classical simulated annealing establishes a limited quantum advantage in the ideal case, since inhomogeneous temperature driving in simulated annealing cannot remove a first-order transition, in contrast to the quantum case. The classical model of spin-vector Monte Carlo is also analyzed, and we find it to have the same thermodynamic phase diagram as the quantum model in the ideal case, with deviations arising at non-zero temperature.

Performance of quantum annealing in solving optimization problems: A review

Quantum annealing is one of the optimization method for generic optimization problems. It uses quantum mechanics and is implemented by a quantum computer ideally. At the earlier stage, several numerical experiments using conventional computers have provided results showing that quantum annealing produces an answer faster than simulated annealing, a classical counterpart of quantum annealing. Later, theoretical and numerical studies have shown that there are drawbacks in quantum annealing. The power of quantum annealing is still an open problem. What makes quantum annealing a hot topic now is that a quantum computer based on quantum annealing is manufactured and commercialized by a Canadian company named D-Wave Systems. In the present article, we review the study of quantum annealing, focusing mainly on its power.

Kibble-Zurek mechanism in simulated annealing and quantum annealing

We study errors of quantum annealing and simulated annealing to highlight better performance of quantum annealing over simulated annealing. Quantum annealing and simulated annealing perform optimization through a quantum adiabatic evolution and a quasi-static evolution respectively. In both methods, dynamics across a phase transition plays a crucial role. The Kibble-Zurek mechanism is known as an underlying physics of defect formation during a time-evolution across a phase transition. We apply an argument for the Kibble-Zurek mechanism to the error generation of quantum annealing and simulated annealing. We show that, for the disordered Ising chain, the kink density and residual energy per spin of quantum annealing decay as (ln τ)−2 and (ln τ)−4 respectively, whereas those of simulated annealing decay as (ln τ)−1 and (ln τ)−2 with the annealing rate −1/τ. These results imply better performance of quantum annealing. We also develop our theory for a two-dimensional spin-glass model.
