Versatile Underwater Pressure Sensitive Adhesive: UV Curing Synthesis and Substrate-Independent Adhesion.

The demand for underwater pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is rapidly increasing in fields such as underwater engineering and biomedicine. However, the achievement of underwater adhesion of PSAs remains a challenge because of the hydration layer that hinders the interaction between the adhesive and the substrate. Herein, a new type of underwater PSA was synthesized by the copolymerization of hydrophobic unsaturated poly(1,2-butylene oxide) (UPBO) and hydrophilic itaconic acid monomers using solvent-free ultraviolet curing. The PSA has demonstrated substrate-independent underwater adhesion strengths ranging from 108 to 141 kPa on both hydrophilic (glass, wood, steel) and hydrophobic (PET, PMMA, PTFE) substrates. The underwater adhesion performance of PSA remains stable during 30 adhesion-detachment cycles and incubation in water for 20 days. Notably, PSA shows cytocompatibility, antimicrobial, and degradable properties and can be used for rapid hemostasis of skin wounds. Experimental characterizations confirm that the process of underwater adhesion is achieved by hydrophobic alkyl side chains of the PBO chain segments, which repel water at the adhesive-substrate interface. This study should provide both practical and facile design strategies for multifunctional underwater PSAs that can be used in a variety of applications.

Revealing the Impact of Viscoelastic Characteristics on Performance Parameters of UV-Crosslinked Hotmelt Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives: Insights from Time-Temperature Superposition Analysis.

This study emphasizes the influential role of rheology in decoding the viscoelastic properties of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) vital to predicting key application features such as shear, tack, and peel, depending on the flow characteristics of PSAs during bonding and debonding processes. By applying the principle of time-temperature superposition (TTS), we extend the scope of our frequency analysis, surpassing the technical constraints of the available apparatus. Our exploration aims to uncover the general correlations between PSAs' viscoelastic properties and their performance in end-use applications. Initially, the adhesive performance and viscoelastic properties of a UV-crosslinkable styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) model adhesive prior and subsequent to UV irradiation were examined. The subsequent crosslinking reaction increased cohesive strength and heat resistance, although tack and peel strength observed a substantial decline. We successfully demonstrated these effects by logging the viscoelastic properties, specifically the storage modulus G' at lower frequencies, which mirrors the shear strength at higher temperatures and the shift in the tan δ peak to represent each PSA's tack. These correlations were partially reflected in three commercial UV crosslinkable acrylic PSA products, although the effect of UV irradiation was less distinctive. This study also revealed the challenges in predicting tack and peel strength, which result from a complex interplay of bonding and debonding processes. Our findings reinforce the necessity for more sophisticated analysis techniques and models that can accurately predict the end-use performance of PSAs across different physical structures and chemical compositions. Further research is needed to develop these predictive models, which may reduce the need for labor-intensive testing under real-life conditions.

Mechanical reinforcement of waterborne latex pressure‐sensitive adhesives with polymer‐grafted nanoparticles

AbstractWaterborne pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) consisting of polymer microparticle emulsions (i.e. latex) are more commonly used in commercial applications than solvent‐borne alternatives, as the use of water as a suspension medium provides better consumer safety and reduces environmental impact. However, the lower mechanical performance of waterborne PSAs prevents their use in applications requiring permanent adhesion or strong bonding between substrates. This reduction in mechanical strength is often attributed to void spaces that form during water evaporation and coalescence of the latex particles, and thus a potential strategy to improve PSA strength would be to add filler materials to occupy these voids. Fundamental studies investigating how interfacial interactions between the latex and fillers affect the collective strength of the films would enable better design of adhesive compositions to tailor PSA mechanical properties. Here we report the use of polymer brush‐grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) as a means of mechanically reinforcing the PSAs, and determine how different aspects of the particle and polymer brush designs enable this improvement in adhesive performance. The PGNPs investigated here are intentionally designed to phase segregate into the aqueous phase of the initial latex suspension, which allows them to both fill free pore volume and also form multivalent supramolecular interactions with the latex particles to form polymer bridges that improve the interconnectivity of the final film. These studies provide insight into potential design strategies for tuning PSA properties with PGNPs, and enable up to 32% improvements to the cohesive strength of the PSAs without the typical deterioration of adhesive strength observed in PSAs using non‐brush‐coated particle fillers.

Influences of probe shape and surface roughness on tack properties measured by the probe tack test and characterization of crosslinked polyacrylic pressure‐sensitive adhesives

AbstractFor a probe tack test for a pressure‐sensitive adhesive (PSA) under the conditions of light contact pressure and short contact time, probes with shapes and surface roughnesses suitable to achieve better wettability were investigated. A smooth, polished probe that became slightly convex at its center was found to be superior to flat‐ended. High surface roughness decreased tack. Debonding observations showed that fibrillation started from the probe edge and extended to the center. The fibril grew, without peeling, until the peak of the force–displacement curve was reached. After the peak, the fibril growth and peeling advanced simultaneously. The fibrillation was important to tack development. The test conditions necessary to observe the deformation behavior of PSA tape with sufficient interfacial adhesion were investigated. The system was preheated at 60°C for 1 h after the probe and PSA tape contacted each other, and was then cooled. The PSA performance of crosslinked random copolymers poly(n‐butyl acrylate‐acrylic acid) (A) and poly(2‐ethylhexyl acrylate‐acrylic acid) (B) were compared. A shoulder formed by fibrillation after the peak in the force–displacement curve was observed only for B. Copolymer B exhibited better interfacial adhesion and deformability. The preheating method was found to be useful for characterizing PSAs.

Variation in adhesion properties and film morphologies of waterborne pressure‐sensitive adhesives containing an acid‐rich diblock copolymer additive

AbstractOne challenge for waterborne pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSA)s is the typical tradeoff between cohesion and adhesion. Others have shown that waterborne PSA films with thin, hard boundaries formed from short poly(acid) segments surrounding soft particles can have simultaneous improvements in adhesion and cohesion. To study this approach in commercial‐type acrylic waterborne PSAs, a diblock copolymer (BCP) composed of poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐(n‐butyl acrylate) (PAA‐b‐PBA) is added at 1–5 wt% to PSAs composed of 100% PBA (PSA (0% acid)) or 99% BA/1% AA (PSA (1% acid)). Films of these blends prepared using industrially relevant conditions reveal complex nanodomains in atomic force microscopy (AFM) images. PSA performance tests showed that 1–2 wt% BCP additive nearly tripled adhesion to stainless steel for PSA (0% acid) while improving cohesion. Nonetheless, AFM images of PSA (0% acid) with 1–2 wt% BCP display ill‐defined morphologies, with clear percolated structures apparent primarily in films with 5% BCP. This indicates that film morphologies which enhance adhesion may not correlate with AFM features. Moreover, the balance of adhesion and cohesion of PSA (1% acid) without BCP exceeds that of any of the BCP blends, demonstrating the challenge of using designed microstructures to improve upon conventional PSAs containing copolymerized acids.

How latex film formation and adhesion at the nanoscale correlate to performance of pressure sensitive adhesives with cellulose nanocrystals.

Emulsion polymerized latex-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are more environmentally benign because they are synthesized in water but often underperform compared to their solution polymerized counterparts. Studies have shown a simultaneous improvement in the tack, and peel and shear strength of various acrylic PSAs upon the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). This work uses atomic force microscopy (AFM) to examine the role of CNCs in (i) the coalescence of hydrophobic 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate/n-butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate (EHA/BA/MMA) latex films and (ii) as adhesion modifiers over multiple length scales. Thin films with varying solids content and CNC loading were prepared by spin coating. AFM revealed that CNCs lowered the solids content threshold for latex particle coalescence during film formation. This improved the cohesive strength of the films, which was directly reflected in the increased shear strength of the EHA/BA/MMA PSAs with increasing CNC loading. Colloidal probe AFM indicated that the nano-adhesion of thicker continuous latex films increased with CNC loading when measured over small contact areas where the effect of surface roughness was negligible. Conversely, the beneficial effects of the CNCs on macroscopic PSA tack and peel strength were outweighed by the effects of increased surface roughness with increasing CNC loading over larger surface areas. This highlights that CNCs can improve both cohesive and adhesive PSA properties; however, the effects are most pronounced when the CNCs interact favourably with the latex polymer and are uniformly dispersed throughout the adhesive film. Nonlinear oscillatory shear tests of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) designed for transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS)

Transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS) based on pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) allow for the application of pharmaceutical substances via diffusion through the skin. The rheological performance of PSA is largely investigated within small amplitude oscillatory shear (typically up to 1 %), although the skin motions exceed strains beyond 40 %. In this paper, amine-compatible (AC) and non-amine-compatible (NAC) silicone-based PSA compounds differing in the resin content were subjected to strain amplitude sweeps in a twin drive rheometer. Carreau-Yasuda-like fitting of storage and loss moduli curves intercepts the substantial effect of resin content on both compounds; up to four times higher, moduli of AC compounds were determined in SAOS, and their higher molecular mass combined with enhanced interactions contributed to an earlier transition to the nonlinear viscoelastic region. In the nonlinear range, elastic and viscous properties are affected by strains in a different manner with the trend favorable for the PSA application as TTS. The third relative higher harmonic from Fourier transformation I3/1 as well as intra-cycle strain stiffening and shear thickening ratios provide information relevant for an optimization of PSA subjected to large deformations.

Influence of UV Polymerization Curing Conditions on Performance of Acrylic Pressure Sensitive Adhesives.

Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were prepared by UV polymerization under varying curing conditions of both fast and slow curing, employing high- and low-intensity UV radiation, respectively. The influences of curing conditions and isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) content on PSA performance were comprehensively investigated by measurement of their rheological, thermal, and adhesive properties. In particular, rheological characterization was accomplished by several analytical methods, such as in situ UV rheology, frequency sweep, stress relaxation, and temperature ramp tests, to understand the effect of the UV curing process and IBOA content on the viscoelastic behavior of acrylic PSAs. The slow-cured samples were observed to form more tightly crosslinked networks compared to the fast-cured. On the other hand, at high loading levels of IBOA, in the case of slow curing, the sample exhibited a contrasting trend, having the shortest stress relaxation time and the highest energy dissipation; this was due to molecular chain scission occurring in the crosslinked polymer during UV polymerization. Consequently, we successfully demonstrated the influence of monomer composition of acrylic PSAs, and that of curing conditions employed in UV polymerization. This study provides valuable insights for the development of crosslinked polymer networks of acrylic PSAs for flexible display applications.

A Modular Strategy for Functional Pressure Sensitive Adhesives.

A modular approach to synthesizing functional pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) was introduced, wherein a modifiable acrylic PSA copolymer was synthesized by copolymerizing common PSA monomers with 6 mol % glycidyl methacrylate, allowing for subsequent functional group modification via the pendant epoxide functionality. This postmodification technique has the advantage of allowing the installation of a variety of functional groups relevant to adhesion, without variation of molecular weight. Because comparisons of cohesive and adhesive performance of candidate PSAs can be complicated by molecular weight differences, this strategy simplifies direct comparisons of the effects of functional groups on performance. As a proof of concept, a mussel-inspired catecholic PSA was synthesized by postreaction of the epoxide scaffold polymer with a thiol-modified catechol, allowing the effect of catechol on underlying structure-property relationships to be determined without variation in molecular weight. The mechanical performance of catecholic PSA was compared to relevant control PSAs by using industry-standard 180° peel and static shear tests, revealing an increase in peel strength achieved through catechol modification. Moreover, we observed an unexpected enhancement in PSA cohesive strength attributed to oxidation of catechol, which cannot be attributed to differences in molecular weight, a common source of changes in PSA cohesive strength.

Vinyltriethoxysilane-functionalized starch nanocrystals as Pickering stabilizer in emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers. Application in nanocomposites and pressure-sensitive adhesives

Emulsion polymerization provides a sustainable way to produce latex polymers for coatings and adhesives thanks to the use of water as a dispersion medium. This synthesis approach can be even more attractive if synthetic surfactant can be replaced by biobased solid particles as a stabilizer, through what is known as a “Pickering effect”. Herein, latex dispersions with solid content up to 35 wt% were successfully produced by emulsion polymerization using starch nanocrystals (SNCs) as a sole stabilizer and H2O2/citric acid as a redox-initiator. The effect of the SNC modification with vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) on the colloidal properties of the polymer dispersion and performance of the resulting nanocomposite film were investigated. As an application of this approach, pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) dispersions have been prepared via Pickering emulsion polymerization in the presence of 8 wt% SNCs. The use of VTES-SNCs has a beneficial impact on the performance of PSAs with improved peel strength and wettability. The possibility to use SNCs as a stabilizer to replace synthetic surfactants in emulsion polymerization opens new avenues for the application of SNCs as biobased Pickering stabilizers to produce latex for coatings, adhesives, inks, and textiles.

Behavior and Adhesion Performance of Acrylic PSAs using Semi-IPN Structure and UV/UV Stepwise Curing

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and UV-curable acrylic systems are widely utilized. In particular, PSAs have currently attracted significant attention because of their utility and applicability for manufacturing re-useable modules for smart devices. In this study, adhesion properties, UV-curing behavior, viscoelastic properties, and gel fraction were investigated. The UV/UV step curing process was utilized to overcome limitations, such as re-work or gap filling. The difference in physical properties between primary curing and secondary curing was confirmed. In addition, by adjusting the content of the crosslinking agent, the experiment based on controlling the structure of the semi-interpenetrating polymer network was conducted. We determined that physical properties varied with the crosslinking agent content. The degree of crosslinking was high, whereas the crosslinking density was low for 0.1–0.3 phr. However, both the degree of crosslinking and the crosslinking density increased for 0.5–1 phr.

Investigating the influences of intermolecular interactions on viscoelastic performance of pressure-sensitive adhesive by FT–IR spectroscopy and molecular modeling

Objective: This study was to clarify the molecular mechanism of viscoelastic performance variations of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) with the addition of drugs by FT-IR spectroscopy and molecular modeling.Significance: Viscoelastic performance of PSA was frequently changed by the addition of drugs in drug-in-adhesive (DIA) patches. It may cause decrease of the physical stability and drug bio-adhesion issues for the development of DIA patch. But, the molecular details of drug–PSA interaction are not clarified.Methods: Model drugs including propranolol (PRO), oxybutynin (OXY), and escitalopram were added into patch with hydroxyl PSA (10%, w/w). Rheological study and thermal analysis were used to characterize the viscoelastic performance and free volume of PSA, respectively. 1H NMR was used to determine the quantity of hydroxyl group in the PSA. FT-IR study and molecular modeling were conducted to describe the types and interaction sites between drug and PSA molecule.Results: The results demonstrated that PRO interacted with –OH and –COOR groups of PSA, which interrupted the interaction between the PSA molecules, resulting in a plasticizing phenomenon of PSA. Escitalopram mainly interacted with –OH of PSA and decreased the rigidity of the drug-loaded PSA only in the high-frequency region. No obvious interaction was found between OXY and PSA, and the viscoelastic performance of PSA did not change significantly.Conclusion: The present study described the molecular mechanism of viscoelastic performance variation, especially the plasticizing effect. These results were essential for the design and development of transdermal patches from the viewpoint of viscoelastic performance.

A sequential design approach for in situ incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals in emulsion-based pressure sensitive adhesives

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are naturally-sourced nanoparticles that can be used to modify polymers and provide exceptional mechanical properties to nanocomposite materials. In this study, CNCs were incorporated into water-based pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) via in situ semi-batch emulsion polymerization to improve PSA properties. A sequential design approach was used to improve CNC/poly(n-butyl acrylate/vinyl acetate) nanocomposite PSAs. In the first part of the design, the effects of acrylic acid (AA) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were examined in the presence of 0.5 wt% CNCs (based on polymer mass). While the SDS was crucial to maintaining latex stability, its excessive addition led to a decrease in PSA performance, namely tack and peel strength. The AA comonomer was pivotal in improving the shear strength of the PSAs, especially in the presence of CNCs. In all cases, the addition of CNCs led to improved PSA shear strength. In the second part of the design, the addition of 1-dodecanethiol (NDM) as a chain transfer agent (CTA) with CNC levels up to 1 wt% led to an improvement in tack and peel strength but at the cost of diminishing the shear strength. Generally, the addition of CNCs improved PSA performance. Thus, to maximize the impact of CNCs on PSA properties, a careful balance of SDS (for latex stability), AA (to improve shear strength) and NDM (to improve tack and peel strength) are needed.

Effect of boron methacrylate monomer on the thermal and pressure-sensitive adhesive properties of 2-EHA-based copolymer latexes synthesized via mini-emulsion polymerization procedure

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are characterized by instantaneous adhesion upon application of light pressure. PSA performance is defined by peel strength, tack and shear strength. The adhesion and cohesion mechanisms are well defined as peel adhesion, loop tack and shear strength in the state of the art and can be adjusted according to the specific requirements. 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate-based latexes have been synthesized with the incorporation of boron methacrylate (BoMA) via mini-emulsion polymerization, and latexes with high surface area were obtained enabling interactive relation with polar and nonpolar surfaces. Cetyl alcohol was used as a cosurfactant to have colloidally stable hydrophobic particles in mini-emulsion polymerization. The incorporation of BoMA at 2% and 4% into the latexes led to an increase in peel adhesion strength on polar and nonpolar substrates. The addition of BoMA decreased the shear strength on both polar and nonpolar substrates at initial and after aging conditions. The shear strength was higher after the polymer films were aged providing a stable and stiff material. The amount of BoMA incisively affects the type of PSA and should be taken into consideration while constructing a polymer for a pre-specified application. The thermal properties were also improved by the addition of BoMA in terms of thermal stability and char yield. The assumptions in question were strongly correlated with peel, shear, loop tack values and thermal analysis.

Linking peel and tack performances of pressure sensitive adhesives.

The performances of Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA) are generally evaluated using different loading geometries such as tack, peel and shear tests. It is difficult to link the behaviors of PSAs in these different geometries, and to predict the result of one test from another, because the confinement of a soft and dissipative material prevents the use of standard fracture mechanics, which separates the interface debonding behavior from the dissipation associated with the bulk deformation. We present here an original experimental investigation based on the modeling strategy proposed by Creton and Ciccotti[1]. Using instrumented versions of both peel and tack measurements, we compared the adherence performances of a series of model PSAs based on styrene-isoprene block copolymers, while identifying the mesoscale mechanisms at play during debonding. This analysis method allows us to model the contribution of the large strain rheology of the PSAs in the total work of debonding. We clearly show that both the adherence performances and local mechanisms can be closely related between peel and tack when considering both similar confinement and a similar strain rate of the fibrils that are spontaneously formed during debonding. While the overall adherence properties change by a factor of 3 between the different samples, the peel tests only present a minor +20% bias in adherence, which can be attributed to the combination of a 10% increase in the average stress and a 10% increase in the maximum strain of the fibrils. This improvement in the understanding of the PSA performances opens the way to a more sound mechanical design of PSA based joints.

Adhesion Performance and Recovery of Acrylic PSA with Acrylic Elastomer (AE) Blends via Thermal Crosslinking for Application in Flexible Displays.

Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) is used to fix each layer of a flexible display. Acrylic PSA needs to satisfy specific elongation and recovery requirements so that reliability of the flexible display can be achieved. For this reason, we aimed to design an acrylic PSA/acrylic elastomer (AE) blend and to study how some viscoelastic and adhesion properties are influenced by the AE content into the mixed, blended system. Samples were characterized by UV–Vis spectrophotometry for transmittance, texture analysis for adhesion performances, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) for recovery and viscoelasticity. When acrylic PSA/AE was simply blended, the adhesion performance changed due to the influence of the long molecular chains of AE. Based on this result, the AE content was fixed at 10 wt %, and acrylic PSA prepolymer was crosslinked at different concentrations of crosslinking agent. Peel strength and probe tack decreased as the concentration of crosslinking agent increased, as reported in previous studies. On the other hand, as the content of the crosslinking agent increased, recovery characteristics were improved. Additionally, as the content of the crosslinking agent increased, the storage modulus also increased, although the glass-transition temperature was not affected. According to these findings, we successfully proved the possibility of using AE to adjust adhesion performance and recovery of acrylic PSA for designing flexible displays.

Contact-induced molecular rearrangement of acrylic acid-incorporated pressure sensitive adhesives

Although recent literatures have pointed out that viscoelastic dissipation is the main mechanism affecting the adhesion of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), the controversial issue found previously has spurred us to be interested in the contribution of surface chemistry and physics. Herein, it was found that changes in the surface energy of PSAs caused a significant increase in the adhesion energy via rearrangement of the polymer chains, inducing reorientation of the polar group toward the metallic adherend. The adhesion energy increased with increasing contact time on the adherend, where the adhesion performance of acrylic acid-incorporated PSA increased by more than 300% after 24 h contact with stainless steel. The surface energy of the adhesives were calculated as a function of contact time via contact angle measurements and using the Fowkes theory in order to substantiate the changes in the surface properties influencing the adhesion. The surface chemistry of the PSAs was analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared analysis and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, which suggest that the enhanced adhesion of acrylic acid-incorporated PSA is due to the contact time-dependent mechanism, in which induces the polymer chains rearranged and polar groups exposed at the interface.

Enhanced Adhesion and Cohesion of Bioinspired Dry/Wet Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives.

The byssus-mediated adhesion of marine mussels is a widely mimicked system for robust adhesion in both dry and wet conditions. Mussel holdfasts are fabricated from proteins that contain a significant amount of the unique catecholic amino acid dihydroxyphenylalanine, which plays a key role in enhancing interfacial adhesion to organic and inorganic marine surfaces and contributes to cohesive strength of the holdfast. In this work, pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were synthesized by copolymerization of dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) with common PSA monomers, butyl acrylate and acrylic acid, with careful attention paid to the effects of catechol on adhesive and cohesive properties. A combination of microscopic and macroscopic adhesion assays was used to study the effect of catechol on adhesion performance of acrylic PSAs. Addition of only 5% DMA to a conventional PSA copolymer containing butyl acrylate and acrylic acid resulted in 6-fold and 2.5-fold increases in work required to separate the PSA from silica and polystyrene, respectively, and a large increase in 180° peel adhesion against stainless steel after 24 h storage in both ambient and underwater conditions. Moreover, the holding power of the catechol PSAs on both steel and high-density polyethylene under shear load continuously increased as a function of catechol concentration, up to a maximum of 10% DMA. We also observed stark increases in shear and peel adhesion for the catecholic adhesives over PSAs with noncatecholic aromatic motifs, further underlining the benefits of catechols in PSAs. Overall, catechol PSAs perform extremely well on polar and metallic surfaces. The advantage of incorporating catechols in PSA formulations, however, is less straightforward for peel adhesion in nonpolar, organic substrates and tackiness of the PSAs.

Adhesion performance and recovery of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives thermally crosslinked with styrene–isoprene–styrene elastomer blends for flexible display applications

Fixing layers in flexible displays requires acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) that can withstand deformation and folding stress. In this study, the effects of a styrene–isoprene–styrene (SIS) elastomer on the adhesion performance and recovery of an acrylic PSA were investigated. In simple blends, the peel strength and probe tack of a PSA sheet decreased slightly as the SIS content increased owing to the elastomer’s soft nature. In contrast, the lap shear stress increased slightly owing to entanglement of the SIS polymer chains. In stress relaxation tests, the effect of SIS on PSA recovery was limited by weak bonding. Therefore, the use of thermal crosslinking to improve bonding within PSA/SIS blends was examined. Although increased crosslinking decreased the peel strength and probe tack, the adhesion properties were maintained and the lap shear stress and strain increased. Further, PSA recovery improved in stress relaxation tests, but a specific strain could not be endured above 1 phr crosslinking agent. Thus, crosslinking with an elastomer plays an active role in the adhesion performance and recovery of acrylic PSAs. However, as the PSA sheet becomes opaque in the presence of SIS, the display applications of this system are limited and further improvements are necessary.
