Changing the order and ratio of substrate filling reduced CH4 and N2O emissions from the aerated constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been used to enhance pollutant removal by filling several types of material as substrates. However, research on substrate filling order remains still limited, particularly regarding the effects of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this study, six CWs were constructed using zeolite and ferric‑carbon micro-electrolysis (Fe-C) fillers to evaluate the effect of changing the filling order and ratio on pollutant removal, GHGs emissions, and associated microbial structure. The results showed that the order of substrate filling significantly impacted pollutant removal performance on CWs. Specifically, CWs filled with zeolite in the top layer exhibited superior NH4+-N removal compared to those filled in the lower layer. Moreover, the highest NH4+-N removal (95.0 % ± 1.9 %) was observed in CWs with a zeolite to Fe-C volume ratio of 8:2 (CWZe-1). Moreover, zeolite-filled at the top had lower GHGs emissions, with the lowest CH4 (0.22 ± 0.10 mg m−2 h−1) and N2O (167.03 ± 61.40 μg m−2 h−1) fluxes in the CWZe-1. In addition, it is worth noting that N2O is the major contributor to integrated global warming potential (GWP) in the six CWs, accounting for 81.7 %–90.8 %. The upper layer of CWs filled with zeolite exhibited higher abundances of nirK, nirS and nosZ genes. The order in which the substrate was filled affected the microbial community structure and the upper layer of CWs filled with zeolite had higher relative abundance of nitrifying genera (Nitrobacter, Nitrosomonas) and denitrifying genera (Zoogloea, Denitratisoma). Additionally, N2O emission was reduced by approximately 41.2 %–64.4 % when the location of the aeration of the CWs was changed from the bottom to the middle. This study showed that both the order of filling the substrate and the aeration position significantly affected the GHGs emissions from CWs, and that CWs had lower GHGs emissions when zeolites were filled in the upper layer and the aeration position was in the middle.

Contaminant removal performance and lipid productivity of a cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium containing exogenous phytohormones during the treatment of antibiotic-polluted wastewater

In this study, a cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium containing native wastewater bacteria and immobilized Synechococcus sp. was constructed. The cyanobacterial cellular responses (including growth, biomass and lipid productivity) and contaminant removal ability (for TN, TP, COD and antibiotics) in the consortium were evaluated during the advanced treatment of wastewater containing 10–50 μg/L of mixed antibiotics (amoxicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, sulfadiazine and ciprofloxacin) with the addition of a certain phytohormone (indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellin A3 or 6-benzylaminopurine) at trace level within a period of four days. Each phytohormone promoted the growth of Synechococcus sp. and increased the tolerance of Synechococcus sp. to mixed antibiotics. Indole-3-acetic acid coupled to moderate antibiotic stress could elevate lipid productivity and lipid content of Synechococcus sp. to 33.50 mg/L/day and 43.75%, respectively. Phytohormones increased the pollutant removal performance of the cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium through the stimulation of cyanobacterial growth and the regulation of cyanobacteria-bacteria interaction, which increased the abundances of microalgae-associated bacteria including Flavobacterium, Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium, Bosea, Sphingomonas and Emticicia. Up to 80.83%, 98.06%, 83.26%, 99.84%, 99.50%, 89.41%, 65.61% and 60.65% of TN, TP, COD, amoxicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, sulfadiazine and ciprofloxacin were removed by the consortium with the addition of phytohormones. In general, indole-3-acetic acid was the optimal phytohormone for enhancing lipid production and contaminant removal performance of the cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium.

Energy-efficient treatment of refractory industrial effluent using flow-through electrochemical processes: Oxidation mechanisms and reduction of chlorinated byproducts

While flow-through anodic oxidation (FTAO) technique has demonstrated high efficiency to treat various refractory waste streams, there is an increasing concern on the secondary hazard generation thereby. In this study, we developed an integrated system that couples FTAO and cathodic reduction processes (termed FTAO-CR) for sustainable treatment of chlorine-laden industrial wastewater. Among four common electrode materials (i.e., Ti4O7, β-PbO2, RuO2, and SnO2-Sb), RuO2 flow-through anode exhibited the best pollutant removal performance and relatively low ClO3 and ClO4 yields. Because of the significant scavenging effect of Cl− in real wastewater treatment, the direct electron transfer process played a dominant role in contaminant degradation for both active and nonactive anodes though active species (i.e., active chlorine) were involved in the subsequent transformation of the organic matter. A continuous FTAO-CR system was then constructed for simultaneous COD removal and organic and inorganic chlorinated byproduct control. The quality of the treated effluent could meet the national discharge permit limit at low energy cost (∼4.52 kWh m3 or ∼0.035 kWh g1-COD). Results from our study pave the way for developing novel electrochemical platforms for the purification of refractory waste streams whilst minimizing the secondary pollution.

Constructing the synergistic effects of chitosan and ionic liquid on SPEEK polymer for efficient adsorption of crystal violet dye

In the study, a novel chitosan biopolymer and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid (IL)-incorporated sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite (Ch-IL@SPEEK) was prepared for adsorption of cationic crystal violet (CV) dye. The proposed composite was well characterized by several techniques. CV adsorption performance was examined via batch studies by varying various variables involving adsorbent dosage, contact time pH and temperature. The isotherm results were demonstrated the adsorption characters of the processes were Langmuirian. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 77.66 mg g−1 for the composite which was significantly higher than SPEEK (qmax = 45.36 mg g−1). The determined equilibrium time of the operated system was 360 min and the kinetic model was assessed as Elovich. At low pHs the protonated surface groups repelled the positively charged CV and the adsorption rate increased with increasing pH. The process is spontaneous and favorable as it proceeds via endothermic interactions. Furthermore, even at the end of 5 successful adsorption cycles, 77.86 % CV removal was obtained. Remarkable efficiencies were also achieved in the removal performance of different organic pollutants. Based on the reported results, Ch-IL@SPEEK composite were exhibited as an impressive adsorbent material for adsorption processes.

All in one doubly pillared MXene membrane for excellent oil/water separation, pollutant removal, and anti-fouling performance

Given the diversity and complexity of coexisting oil/dyes/heavy metal ions/microorganisms in wastewater and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air, developing separation materials featured in higher separation efficiency and lower energy consumption for oil and water separation, pollutant removal, and anti-fouling is urgently needed, but it remains a major challenge till now. Herein, a multifunctional Ti3C2 MXene membrane with unique double pillar support was proposed by liquid phase ultrasonication and vacuum filtration to overcome the above challenge. Introducing cetyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and calcium chloride/sodium alginate (CaCl2/SA) to the MXene membrane as crossed double pillars and superhydrophilic surface increases the tolerance and wettability of the membrane. The fabricated doubly pillared MXene (d-Ti3C2) membrane exhibits superior oil/water (O/W) separation efficiency (99.76%) with flux (1.284 L m−2 h−1) for canola oil and organic dye removing efficiency for methyl blue (MB) 99.85%, malachite green (MG) 100%, and methyl violet (MV) 99.72%, respectively, which is 1.05, 1.44, 1.22, and 1.28 fold compared with pre-pillared Ti3C2 (p-Ti3C2). The superior anti-oil/dye/fouling is attributed to lower oil conglutination, high hydrophily, and antibacterial activity. The versatile MXene membrane also shows distinguished separation of VOCs (η > 99%) from polluted air. The experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) computational simulation results illustrate that the superior separation efficiency of the Ti3C2 MXene membrane is ascribed to the unique doubly pillared space channel. This study paves a new road to further research on one step integration strategy for complex O/W separation, wastewater and VOCs removal, and anti-fouling via tuning nano/macro architecture.

Bioenergy-producing two-stage septic tank and floating wetland for onsite wastewater treatment: Circuit connection and external aeration

This study designed a two-stage, electrode-integrated septic tank-floating wetland system and assessed their pollutant removal performances under variable operational conditions. The two-stage system achieved mean organic, nitrogen, phosphorus, and coliform removal percentages of 99, 78, 99, and 97%, respectively, throughout the experimental run. The mean metals (chromium, cadmium, nickel, copper, zinc, lead, iron, and manganese) removal percentages ranged between 81 and 98%. Accumulated sludge, filler media, and the hanging root mass contributed to pollutant removals by supporting physicochemical and biological pathways. The mean effluent organic concentration and coliform number across the two-stage system were 20 mg/L and 1682 CFU/100 mL, respectively, during the closed-circuit protocol, which was beneath the open-circuit-based performance profiles, i.e., 32 mg/L and 2860 CFU/100 mL, respectively. Effluent organic, nitrogen, phosphorus, metals, and coliform number ranges across the two-stage system were 9–17 mg/L, 13–24 mg/L, 1–1.5 mg/L, 0.001–0.2 mg/L, and 1410–2270 CFU/100 mL, respectively during intermittent and continuous aeration periods. The air supply rate differences influenced pollutant removal depending on the associated removal mechanisms. The non-aeration phase produced higher effluent pollutant concentrations than the aeration periods-based profiles. The overall mean power density production of the septic tank ranged between 107 and 596 mW/m3; 110 and 355 mW/m3 with the floating wetland. The bioenergy production capacity of the septic tank was positively correlated to external air supply rates. This study demonstrates the potential application of the novel bioenergy-producing septic tank-floating wetland system for wastewater treatment in decentralized areas.

Sustainable treatment of aquaculture water employing fungi-microalgae consortium: Nutrients removal enhancement, bacterial communities optimization, emerging contaminants elimination, and mechanism analysis

Fungi-microalgae consortium (FMC) has emerged as a promising system for advanced wastewater treatment due to its high biomass yield and environmental sustainability. This study aimed to investigate the nutrients removal, bacterial community shift, emerging contaminants elimination, and treatment mechanism of a FMC composed of Cordyceps militaris and Navicula seminulum for aquaculture pond water treatment. The fungi and microalgae were cultured and employed either alone or in combination to evaluate the treatment performance. The results demonstrated that the FMC could improve water quality more significantly by reducing nutrient pollutants and optimizing the bacterial community structures. Furthermore, it exhibited stronger positive correlation between the enrichment of functional bacteria for water quality improvement and pollutants removal performance than the single-species treatments. Moreover, the FMC outperformed other groups in eliminating emerging contaminants such as heavy metals, antibiotics, and pathogenic Vibrios. Superiorly, the FMC also showed excellent symbiotic interactions and cooperative mechanisms for pollutants removal. The results collectively corroborated the feasibility and sustainability of using C. militaris and N. seminulum for treating aquaculture water, and the FMC would produce more mutualistic benefits and synergistic effects than single-species treatments.

Effective Removal of Nile Blue Dye from Wastewater using Silver-Decorated Reduced Graphene Oxide.

Nile blue (NB) dye is a highly toxic substance that when discharged into sewage presents a significant risk to the environment and human health. Carbon-based nanomaterials, such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and their nanocomposites, offer considerable potential for eliminating hazardous pollutants from aqueous systems. In this study, we have successfully fabricated bare GO and rGO, and then, the rGO was decorated with silver (Ag) nanoparticles to develop the Ag-rGO composite. The as-prepared materials were characterized by various techniques, such as UV-visible (UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to elucidate their structure, morphology, and chemical composition. The pollutant removal performance of the as-prepared materials was evaluated through a batch approach under the effect of various experimental variables for removal of NB dye from wastewater. As obvious, the Ag-rGO composite revealed exceptional performance for NB dye removal from wastewater, with a maximum removal percentage of 94% within 60 min, which is remarkably higher than those of the rGO (i.e., 59%) and GO (i.e., 22%), under the same experimental conditions. The adsorption data was analyzed with thermodynamics, isotherms, and kinetics models to better understand the physicochemical mechanisms driving the effective removal of the NB dye. The results reveal that Ag-rGO nanocomposite exhibit excellent adsorption ability as well as favorable thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for NB dye removal. It was also found that the presence of light enhanced the adsorptive removal of NB while using Ag-rGO as an adsorbent. The present study noted significant reusability of the Ag-rGO nanocomposite, likely due to minimal Ag leaching and/or the robust stability of the Ag-rGO. It is suggested that Ag-rGO-based hybrid materials could serve as promising candidates for efficiently adsorbing and catalytically removing various toxic pollutants from wastewater.

Changes and stage disparity of aerobic sludge granulation with increasing organic load rate under low organotrophic conditions

The experiment focused the impact of increasing organic load rate (OLR) (0.6 kg COD·m−3·d−1 →1.2 kg COD·m−3·d−1) on the development of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) under low organotrophic conditions. During the sludge granulation process, the sludge characteristics and pollutant removal performance as the OLR increased under low organotrophic conditions in the reactor were better than that at constant OLR. At the end of the experiment, the mixed liquid suspended solid concentration and average particle size increased to 5.6 g/L and 1288.6 μm, and the removal efficiency of pollutants reached more than 80% with increasing OLR. However, the strengthening effect of the increasing OLR under low organotrophic conditions varied at the different stages during sludge granulation, indicating its stage disparity. In addition, the increase in OLR under low organotrophic conditions changed the extracellular polymeric substances distribution and chemical structure characteristics, with protein changes being more sensitive. With increasing OLR at granule formation stage, the microbial community structure varied obviously. Furthermore, the function bacterial Zoogloea, Plasticicumulans, and unclassified_Rhodocyclaceae were enriched, which might be the underlying cause of the stage disparity.

Mesoporous silica-grafted deep eutectic solvent-based mixed matrix membranes for wastewater treatment: Synthesis and emerging pollutant removal performance

Abstract Nano-enhanced membrane technology and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have demonstrated effectiveness in addressing emerging environmental pollutants. This research centers on purifying water by removing heavy metals employing membranes enhanced with mesoporous silica and DES. Various DESs, including hexanoic acid, octanoic acid, and decanoic acid, were synthesized using tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) as a base. The study combined a polysulfone-based membrane with mesoporous silica, aiming for efficient indigenous crafting to remove heavy metals. Mesoporous silica was blended with the synthesized DES solution, creating diverse membranes for heavy metal separation. The study characterized these membranes using various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. Surface mapping confirmed the integration of silicon-based DES, reducing the membrane surface roughness from 4 to 1.4 nm. By adjusting the carboxylic acid chain length with TBABr and adding mesoporous silica, leaching ratios were reduced from 4.2 to 2.3%. Silica-grafted DES-based membranes exhibited a progressive increase in flux from 2.6 to 26.67 L/m2 h. The synthesized silicon-based membranes demonstrated outstanding performance, achieving rejection rates exceeding 80% for chromium and arsenic, maintaining an impressive 90% flux recovery ratio even at high flux rates. This study will envision the potential of nano-enhanced membrane technology utilizing DES for sustainable water purification and wastewater treatment applications to achieve the sustainable development goal (SDG) of clean water and sanitation (SDG-6).

Removal of sulfur and nitrogen pollutants in a sediment microbial fuel cell coupled with Vallisneria natans: Efficiency, microbial community structure, and functional genes

The rapid development of the economy has led to an increase in the sulfur and nitrogen load in surface water, which has the potential to cause river eutrophication and the emission of malodorous gases. A lab-scale sediment microbial fuel cell coupled with Vallisneria natans (P-SMFC) was designed for surface water remediation. The enhancement of pollutant removal performance of P-SMFC was evaluated in contrast to the SMFC system without plants (SMFC), the open-circuit control system with plants (C–P), and the open-circuit control system without plants (C–S), while illustrating the mechanisms of the sulfur and nitrogen transformation process. The results demonstrated that the effluent and sediment of P-SMFC had lower concentrations of sulfide compared to other systems. Furthermore, P-SMFC exhibited higher removal efficiency for COD (73.1 ± 8.7%), NH4+-N (80.5 ± 19.8%), and NO3−-N (88.5 ± 11.8%) compared to other systems. The closed-circuit conditions and growth of Vallisneria natans create a favorable ecological niche for functional microorganisms involved in power generation, sulfur oxidation, and nitrogen transformation. Additionally, metagenomic analysis revealed that multifunctional bacteria possessing both denitrification and sulfur oxidation genes, such as Thiobacillus, Dechloromonas, and Bacillus, may play simultaneous roles in metabolizing sulfur and nitrogen, thus serving as integral factors in maintaining the performance of P-SMFC. In summary, these findings provide a theoretical reference for the concurrent enhancement of sulfur and nitrogen pollutants removal in P-SMFC and will facilitate its practical application in the remediation of contaminated surface water.

Subtle magnesium liberation of self-fabricated functional filler actuates highly efficient phosphorus removal from source-separated urine by SBBR.

Domestic wastewater source-separated treatment has attracted wide attention due to the efficiency improvement of sewage treatment systems, energy saving, resource reuse, and the construction and operation cost saving of pipeline networks. Nonetheless, the excess source-separated urine still demands further harmless treatment. Sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR), a new type of composite biofilm reactor developed by filling different fillers into the sequential batch reactor (SBR) reactor, has higher pollutant removal performance and simpler operation and maintenance. However, the phosphorus removal ability of the SBBR filling with conventional fillers is still limited and needs further improvement. In this study, we developed two new fillers, the self-fabricated filler A and B (SFA/SFB), and compared their source-separated urine treatment performance. Long-term treatment experimental results demonstrated that the SBBR systems with different fillers had good removal performance on the COD and TN in the influent, and the removal rate increased with the increasing HRT. However, only the SBBR system with the SFA showed excellent PO43--P and TP removal performance, with the removal rates being 83.7 ± 11.9% and 77.3 ± 13.7% when the HRT was 1 d. Microbial community analysis results indicated that no special bacteria with strong phosphorus removal ability were present on the surface of the SFA. Adsorption experimental results suggested that the SFA had better adsorption performance for phosphorus than the SFB, but it could not always have stronger phosphorus adsorption and removal performance during long-term operation due to the adsorption saturation. Through a series of characterizations such as SEM, XRD, and BET, it was found that the SFA had a looser structure due to the use of different binder and production processes, and the magnesium in the SFA gradually released and reacted with PO43- and NH4+ in the source-separated urine to form dittmarite and struvite, thus achieving efficient phosphorus removal. This study provides a feasible manner for the efficient treatment of source-separated urine using the SBBR system with self-fabricated fillers.

Revealing the differences in metabolisms and nitrogen removal mechanisms of the full and shortcut nitrification-denitrification processes for the treatment of livestock wastewater

The full nitrification-denitrification process (FN) and shortcut nitrification-denitrification process (SN) are both important approaches for treating livestock wastewater. However, most existing studies focus on pollutant removal performance in wastewater treatment, while the differences between the two processes in terms of bacterial communities, metabolic pathways, nitrogen removal mechanisms, and potential pathogen threats have been poorly investigated. In this study, the SN process exhibited lower oxygen demand, reduced sludge production, higher nitrogen removal rate, and lower pathogen threat for treating livestock wastewater. The bacterial communities, the primary participants of pollutant removal in wastewater treatment, were significantly different between the two processes. In the FN process, 15 genera were significantly enriched, including Saccharimonadales, Micropruina, Ferruginibacter, etc. On the other hand, the SN process showed enrichment of 10 genera, including Brachymonas, Tessaracoccus, Ottowia, etc. These enriched genera, such as Brachymonas, Tessaracoccus, and Ottowia in the SN process, were positively correlated with the denitrification genes, facilitating a higher nitrogen removal rate. Moreover, the FN process exhibited significantly higher amino acid metabolism and reproduction-related pathways, contributing to its higher alpha-diversity of the bacterial community. The significantly enriched genes involved in assimilatory nitrate reduction and nitrogen assimilation pathway suggested that nitrogen assimilation played a crucial role in ammonia nitrogen removal, but it also increased sludge production in the FN process. Additionally, the FN process had a higher number and abundance of potential pathogens, indicating a greater pathogen threat. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the differences between the FN and SN processes in terms of bacterial communities, nitrogen removal mechanisms, and potential pathogen threats. It also offers theoretical guidance for adopting appropriate strategies in wastewater treatment.

Nanofibrous membranes modified by zwitterionic polyelectrolyte brushes for effective adsorption of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride

In this study, zwitterionic polyelectrolyte brushes poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) were grafted on poly (vinyl alcohol)/graphene oxide (PVA/GO) nanofibrous membranes by surface-initiated activators generated by electron transfer for atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). The obtained PVA/GO@PMPC nanofibrous membranes were used as adsorbents for removal of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. The membrane prepared with the most amount of GO in the electrospinning solution and the highest MPC concentration during grafting polymerization displayed the largest adsorption amount of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (245.6 mg/g). Within 15 h, the adsorption achieved equilibrium, and the removal process agreed well with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. At pH = 7.0, the maximum adsorption capacity was attained, and the adsorption capacity increased gradually with temperature. Study on adsorption mechanism revealed that π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding interactions and electrostatic interactions might be involved for removal of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. After being repeatedly used for six times, binding affinity of the membrane did not change significantly. This study provided a general method for creating nanofibrous membranes with superior adsorption performance for removal of organic pollutants.

Establishing an efficient membrane bioreactor for simultaneous pollutant removal and purple bacteria production under salinity stress

Recovering resources from wastewater to alleviate the energy crisis has become the prevailing trend of technological development. Purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB), a group of fast-growing microbes, have been widely noticed for their potential in producing value-added products from waste streams. However, saline contents in these waste streams, such as food processing wastewater pose a big challenge, which not only restrain the pollutant removal efficiency, but also hinder the growth of functional microbes. To overcome this, a photo anaerobic membrane bioreactor cultivating PPB (PPB-MBR) was constructed and its performance upon long-term salinity stress was investigated. PPB-MBR achieved desirable pollutants removal performance with the average COD and NH4+ removal efficiency being 87% (±8%, n = 87) and 89% (±10%, n = 87), respectively during long-term exposure to salinity stress of 1–80 g NaCl L−1. PPB were predominant during the entire operation period of 87 days (60%–80%), obtaining maximum biomass yield of 0.67 g biomass g−1 CODremoved and protein productivity of 0.18 g L−1 d−1 at the salinity level of 20 g NaCl L−1 and 60 g NaCl L−1, respectively. The sum of value-added products in proportion to the biomass reached 58% at maximum at the salinity level of 60 g NaCl L−1 with protein, pigments and trehalose contributing to 44%, 8.7%, and 5%, respectively. Based on economic analysis, the most cost-saving scenario treating food processing wastewater was revealed at salinity level of around 20 g NaCl L−1. However, more optimization tools are needed to boost the production efficiency so that the profit from value-added products can outweigh the additional cost by excess salinity in the future implication.

Unveiling the contemporary progress of graphene-based nanomaterials with a particular focus on the removal of contaminants from water: a comprehensive review.

Water scarcity and pollution pose significant challenges to global environmental sustainability and public health. As these concerns intensify, the quest for innovative and efficient water treatment technologies becomes paramount. In recent years, graphene-based nanomaterials have emerged as frontrunners in this pursuit, showcasing exceptional properties that hold immense promise for addressing water contamination issues. Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, exhibits extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties. These inherent characteristics have led to a surge of interest in leveraging graphene derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide and functionalized graphene, for water treatment applications. The ability of graphene-based nanomaterials to adsorb, catalyze, and photocatalyze contaminants makes them highly versatile in addressing diverse pollutants present in water sources. Assessing lab-scale hybrid wetland performance for pollutant and pathogen removal from high organic loading septage

A laboratory-scale three-staged hybrid constructed wetland (CW) system was operated for the treatment of septage. The Hybrid-CW, covering an area of 1.92 m2, consisted of a sludge drying bed (SDB) of 0.41 m2, a vertical sub-surface flow bed (VSSF) of 0.58 m2, and a horizontal sub-surface flow bed (HSSF) of 0.93 m2. The SDB, VSSF and HSSF beds were operated at an average hydraulic loading rate (HLR) 22.2, 5.2 and 3.2 cm d−1. With an average organic loading rate (OLR) of 28.8 g d−1 the Hybrid-CW confirmed effective removal of BOD5, COD, TS, and TSS by 99.2 ± 0.3% and 99.4 ± 0.2%, 96.4 ± 0.8% and 86.9 ± 2.4%, respectively. The correlation between effluent TS and TSS concentrations with influent concentrations indicated a dependence of TS and TSS removal on influent concentration. Average total coliform count in influent and effluent was observed as 6.3 × 107 and 1.6 × 103 CFU L−1respectively. Average helminthes eggs count in the influent and effluent was recorded as 5 × 107 and 2 × 104 eggs L−1 respectively. With an inlet TS loading of 177.5 g d−1, the hybrid CW system attained 96.4% TS removal and 87% TSS removal. The sludge drying bed, operating with a remarkably high TS loading of 861.9 ± 77.1 g m−2 d−1, avoided clogging and achieved >90% removal rates for total coliform and helminthes eggs along with around 60% for TS and BOD. Furthermore, the system exhibited excellent removal rates of over 99% for both total coliform (TC) and helminthes eggs (HE). Treated septage meets the Indian wastewater discharge criteria for BOD, COD, TS and TN.

A novel alginate-embedded magnetic biochar-anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria composite microspheres for multipollutant removal: Mechanisms of photo-bioelectrochemical enhancement and excellent reusability performance

Existing wastewater treatment technologies face the key challenge of simultaneously removing emerging contaminants and nutrients from wastewater efficiently, with a simplified technological process and minimized operational costs. In this study, a novel alginate-embedded magnetic biochar-anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria composite microspheres (CA-MBC-PSB microspheres) was prepared for efficient, cost-effective and one-step removal of antibiotics and NH4+-N from wastewater. Our results demonstrated that the CA-MBC-PSB microspheres removed 97.23% of sulfadiazine (SDZ) within 7 h and 91% of NH4+-N within 12 h, which were 21.23% and 38% higher than those achieved by pure calcium alginate-Rhodopseudomonas palustris microspheres (53% and 45.7%), respectively. The enhanced SDZ and NH4+-N removal were attributed to the enhanced photoheterotrophic metabolism and excretion of extracellular photosensitive active substances from R. Palustris through the photo-bioelectrochemical interaction between R. Palustris and magnetic biochar. The long-term pollutants removal performance of the CA-MBC-PSB microspheres was not deteriorated but continuously improved with increasing ruse cycles with a simultaneous removal efficiency of 99% for SDZ and 92% for NH4+-N after three cycles. The excellent stability and reusability were due to the fact that calcium alginate acts as an encapsulating agent preventing the loss and contamination of R. palustris biomass. The CA-MBC-PSB microspheres also exhibited excellent performance for simultaneous removal of SDZ (89% in 7 h) and NH4+-N (90.7% in 12 h) from the secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plant, indicating the stable and efficient performance of CA-MBC-PSB microspheres in practical wastewater treatment.

Pilot-scale investigation of performance and microbial community in a novel system combining fixed and suspended activated sludge

The conventional activated sludge (CAS) process is a widely used method for wastewater treatment due to its effectiveness and affordability. However, it can be prone to sludge abnormalities such as sludge bulking/foaming and sludge loss, which can lead to a decrease in treatment efficiency. To address these issues, a novel bag-based fixed activated sludge (BBFAS) system utilizing mesh bags to contain the sludge was developed for low carbon/nitrogen ratio wastewater treatment. Pilot-scale experiments demonstrated that the BBFAS system could successfully avoid the sludge abnormalities. Moreover, it was not affected by mass transfer resistance and exhibited significantly higher nitrogen removal efficiency, surpassing that of the CAS system by up to 78%. Additionally, the BBFAS system demonstrated comparable organic matter removal efficiency to CAS system. 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing revealed that the bacterial community structure within the BBFAS system was significantly different from that of the CAS system. The bacteria associated with ammonium removal were more abundant in the BBFAS system than in the CAS system. The abundance of Nitrospira in the BBFAS could reach up to 6% and significantly higher than that in the CAS system, and they were likely responsible for both ammonia-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing functions. Clear stratification of microbial communities was observed from the outer to inner layers of the bag components due to the gradients of dissolved oxygen and other substrates. Overall, this study presents a promising approach for avoiding activated sludge abnormalities while maintaining high pollutant removal performance.

In situ fabrication of lanthanum-doped nickel oxide nanostructures using sol-gel for the degradation of rhodamine B.

Nanoscale science represents a thriving field of research for environmental applications within materials science. This study focuses on the fabrication of pure and La-doped nickel oxide (NiO) nanostructures with varying concentrations (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 wt%) of lanthanum using a facile sol-gel technique. This study explores the structural, morphological, chemical composition, and optical characteristics of the resulting pure and La-doped NiO nanostructures. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used for material analysis. The observed trend in the energy band gap (Eg) values demonstrates a continuous decrease up to a La-doping concentration of 3 wt% in NiO. However, after this concentration (at 4.0 wt%), there is a noticeable increase in the energy band gap. At lower La-doping concentrations (up to 3 wt%), the incorporation of La ions into the NiO lattice may result in the formation of defects and oxygen vacancies. The presence of these imperfections may lead to new energy levels into the band gap, resulting in partial filling and a subsequent reduction in the band gap. Beyond a specific doping concentration (e.g., 3 wt%), excess La atoms may aggregate or cluster inside the NiO lattice. This agglomeration may cause structural distortions, strain, and disturbances in the crystal lattice, resulting in an increase in the band gap. The 3 wt% La-doped NiO sample demonstrated a notable 84% degradation efficiency of the synthesized nanomaterials coupled with its inherent stability, highlighting its dual attributes of effective pollutant removal and sustained performance. Furthermore, the cyclic stability of the optimized nanostructure is anticipated to be ∼77.42% after six cycles, suggesting promising future applications in photocatalysis.
