Hydroelastic analysis of a very large floating structure edged with a pair of submerged horizontal plates

This paper is concerned with the hydroelastic problem of a very large pontoon-type floating structure (VLFS) edged with a pair of submerged horizontal plates, which is a combination of perforated and non-perforated plates attached to the for-end and back-end of the VLFS. For the hydroelastic analysis, the fluid is assumed to be ideal and its motion is irrotational so that a velocity potential exists. The VLFS is modeled as an elastic plate according to the classical thin plate theory. The fluid-structure interaction problem is separated into conventional hydrodynamics and structure dynamics by using modal expansion method in the frequency-domain. It involves, firstly, the deflection of the VLFS, which is expressed by a superposition of modal functions and corresponding modal amplitudes. Then the boundary element method is used to solve the integral equations of diffraction and radiation on the body surface for the velocity potential, whereas the vibration equation is solved by the Galerkin’s method for modal amplitudes, and then the deflection is obtained by the sum of multiplying modal functions with modal amplitudes. This study examines the effects of the width and location of the non-perforated horizontal plates on the hydroelastic response of the VLFS, then the performance of perforated plates is investigated to reduce the motion near the fore-end of the VLFS. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of submerged plates without and with cylindrical holes, we propose a simple anti-motion device, which is a combination of a pair of perforated and non-perforated plates attached to the for-end and back-end of the VLFS. The effectiveness of this device in reducing the deformation and bending moment of the VLFS has been confirmed, and is compared with the results in cases without and with the submerged horizontal plates by the analysis in this paper.

The influence of separation distance on the performance of perforated plates as a blast wave shielding technique

This article presents the results of an experimental investigation into the performance of perforated plates as a blast wave mitigation method in tunnel-like structures. Combinations of three different blockage ratios and three different separation distances (defined as the distance between the perforated plates and target plates) were used during the blast experiments to ascertain the influence of the two variables, while the charge to target plate stand-off distance was kept constant. The results were compared to those obtained during similar test work at a lower separation distance of 25 mm, and also to baseline experiments with no perforated plate at a similar stand-off distance. Results of the blast tests showed that the perforated plates with higher blockage ratios reduced the damage imparted to the target plate. This effect was more significant at the lower separation distances. Increasing the separation distance also reduced the damage for a given blockage ratio and impulse.

Using Perforated Plates as a Blast Wave Shielding Technique for Application to Tunnels

Tunnels are vulnerable to devastating explosions, due to the concentration of explosive energy that would be many times greater than in an unconfined blast. One way to mitigate the damage resulting from an explosion is to disrupt the blast wave as it propagates along a tunnel. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the performance of perforated plates as a blast wave mitigation method in tunnel-like structures. Plastic explosive was detonated at the open end of a small-scale rigid steel tube and the blast wave propagated down the tube towards a thin, steel target plate. Increasing the separation distance between the perforated plate and target plate decreased the target plate deformation and increased the impulse at which tearing initiated. Large plastic displacement of the perforated plates was observed. Ansys Autodyn was used to model the experiments and provide additional insight into the blast wave propagation.
