Effect of Cavity Size on Performance of Particle Damper

Abstract: Particle damping is a damping technique that has found wide applications in engineering systems. It is a form of damping where the energy dissipation is achieved through the motion of small particles within a cavity. This technique has several unique features that make it an attractive option for many engineering applications. Cantilever beam with FFT analyzer is used to find the response parameters. The readings are taken with varying cavity dimensions, size of ball, packing ratio and ball material. The readings in the form of acceleration are noted by varying one experimental parameter. From the experimentation it is found that 24 mm diameter and height 37 mm cavity with 50% Packing ratio is effective for the applied experimental set-up.

Abstract: The study of particle damping involves the understanding of the various forces and mechanisms that cause energy to be lost from vibrating systems, leading to the reduction of their amplitudes over time. The cantilever beam is used for experimentation. FFT analyzer is used to find the response parameters. The readings are taken with varying cavity dimensions, size of ball, packing ratio and ball material. The response parameters in the form of acceleration are noted by varying one experimental parameter. From the experimentation it is found that 5 mm ball with sand material is effective for the applied experimental set-up.

Research on the impact of surface properties of particle on damping effect in gear transmission under high speed and heavy load

Abstract The vibration and noise from gear transmission have great damage on the mechanical equipment and operators. Through inelastic collisions and friction between particles, the energy can be dissipated in gear transmission. A dynamic model of particle dampers in gear transmission was put forward in this paper. The performance of particle dampers in centrifugal fields under different rotational speeds and load was investigated. The surface properties such as the impact of coefficient of restitution and friction coefficient of the particle on the damping effect were analyzed and the total energy loss was obtained by discrete element method (DEM). The vibration from time-varying mesh stiffness was effectively reduced by particle dampers and the optimum coefficient of restitution was discovered under different rotational speeds and load. Then, a test bench for gear transmission was constructed, and the vibration of driven gear and driving gear were measured through a three-directional wireless acceleration sensor. The research results agree well with the simulation results. While at relatively high speed, smaller coefficient of restitution achieves better damping effect. As to friction coefficient, at relatively high speed, the energy dissipation climbs up and then declines with the increase of the friction coefficient. The results can provide guidelines for the application of particle damper in gear transmission.

Application of genetic algorithm-support vector regression model to predict damping of cantilever beam with particle damper

The performance of particle damper is strongly nonlinear, and the energy dissipation is derived from a combination of mechanisms including plastic collisions and friction between the particles and the walls and between the particles themselves. An optimized support vector regression model is built to predict the damping ratio of cantilever beam with particle damper. Then, the optimal parameters are adopted to construct the support vector regression models. In addition, genetic algorithm is used to select the optimal variables so as to improve the predictive ability of the models. Cross validation combined with support vector regression is used in this research and is compared with the genetic algorithm-support vector regression method. Genetic algorithm-support vector regression as research object to compare with the combination of cross validation and support vector regression. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed genetic algorithm-support vector regression model provides better prediction capability. Therefore, the genetic algorithm-support vector regression model is proven to be an effective approach to predict the damping ratio of cantilever beam with particle damper.

Influence of cavity on the performance of particle damper under centrifugal loads

Particle damping technology, which was developed from impact damping technology, has been successfully used in many fields for vibration reduction. However, the vibration reduction effect of a particle damper (PD) under centrifugal loads is poor and there have been few studies about it. Therefore, a particle damper under rotational conditions was modeled and the effect of the cavity was investigated in this paper. The cavity of the PD is a circular hole. The relationship of the normal pressure between particle layers and the depth in different orientations of the hole under centrifugal loads was established based on powder and soil mechanics. Moreover, the discrete element method was used to simulate the particle damper. In the conditions of rotation, the effects of the orientation and aspect ratio of the PD’s hole on the vibration reduction were studied. Results showed that the hole of the PD drilled perpendicular to the centrifugal load achieved better damping effect and a slender hole (the length is larger than the diameter) provided better vibration reduction effect. In addition, as the rotation speed increased, the optimal aspect ratio also increased. The results can be used as a guide in the design of particle dampers under rotational conditions.

A simulation algorithm and results of simulative studies aimed at understanding the effects of parameters of particle damper are presented. Parameters considered include damper geometry, particle material and particle size.

Coupling Simulation Algorithm of Dynamic Feature of a Plate With Particle Dampers Under Centrifugal Loads

Particle damper comprises granular particle enclosed in a container within a vibrating structure. The performance of particle damper is strongly nonlinear whose energy dissipation is derived from a combination of mechanisms including plastic collisions and friction between particles or particles and cavity walls. Particle damper containing suitable materials may be effective in a wider temperature range than most other types of passive damping devices. Therefore, it may be applied in extreme temperature environments where most conventional dampers would fail. It may also attenuate vibrations over a broad range of frequencies and cost less. Researches have indicated that particle damper could be a viable option for extreme environment applications. However, to date, no effort has come forward the can prove analytically or numerically that the particle damping is a viable solution for vibration suppression under centrifugal forces. In this paper, a coupling simulation algorithm based on the discrete element method and finite element method and the results of simulative studies aimed at understanding the effects of parameters of particle damper under centrifugal forces are presented. And the results show that the presented coupling simulation algorithm is effective and the analyses of dynamic feature of a plate with particle dampers under centrifugal loads are reasonable.

Parametric studies of the performance of particle dampers under harmonic excitation

The performance of particle dampers under dynamic loads is very complicated and highly nonlinear; consequently, no guidelines currently exist for determining the optimum strategies for maximizing their behavior. The underlying interaction mechanics involve energy dissipation and momentum exchange. This paper presents the concept of ‘effective momentum exchange’ to quantify its influence on the performance of particle dampers with low volumetric filling ratio. The paper also evaluates the effects of a large number of system parameters (such as number, size and particle material, mass ratio, excitation frequency and amplitude level, coefficient of restitution, damping ratio of the primary system, and the coefficient of friction), using high-fidelity simulations based on the discrete-element method. It is shown that applying more particles with a high value of the coefficient of restitution can result in a broader range of acceptable response levels. For a given mass ratio, the particle type and size have minor effects on the primary system performance. Increasing the mass ratio can improve the damper's effectiveness but only up to a certain level. Friction is usually detrimental in low volumetric filling ratio particle dampers. It is shown that by using a properly designed particle damper, a lightly damped primary system can achieve a considerable reduction in its response with a small weight penalty.
