The ATP Level in the mPFC Mediates the Antidepressant Effect of Calorie Restriction.

Food deprivation can rescue obesity and overweight-induced mood disorders, and promote mood performance in normal subjects. Animal studies and clinical research have revealed the antidepressant-like effect of calorie restriction, but little is known about the mechanism of calorie restriction-induced mood modification. Previous studies have found that astrocytes modulate depressive-like behaviors. Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 2 (IP3R2) is the predominant isoform in mediating astrocyte Ca2+ signals and its genetic knockout mice are widely used to study astrocyte function in vivo. In this study, we showed that deletion of IP3R2 blocked the antidepressant-like effect induced by calorie restriction. In vivo microdialysis experiments demonstrated that calorie restriction induced an increase in ATP level in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in naïve mice but this effect disappeared in IP3R2-knockout mice, suggesting a role of astrocytic ATP in the calorie restriction-induced antidepressant effect. Further experiments showed that systemic administration and local infusion of ATP into the mPFC induced an antidepressant effect, whereas decreasing ATP by Apyrase in the mPFC blocked calorie restriction-induced antidepressant regulation. Together, these findings support a role for astrocytic ATP in the antidepressant-like effect caused by calorie restriction.

VARIABILITY IN APOE-TOMM40-PVRL2 LOCUS AND OTHER GENOMIC REGIONS CONTRIBUTES TO COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE IN A POPULATION BASED STUDY OF RUSSIAN ELDERLY

Genetic variability contributes to the age of onset of the late onset Alzheimer's disease as well as to cognitive performance in normal subjects. A set of 62 single nucleotide variants was tested in respect to Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) total score in 708 older subjects randomly selected from a large urban elderly population from Tomsk, Russia. Volunteers were identified through the local centralized medical care system and were invited for neurocognitive assessment as a part of a study of normal aging of the brain. Detailed information was collected on 2000+ individuals, including demographics, medical history, and family history. 62 SNPs in 45 genes previously reported to be associated with cognitive performance and/or Alzheimer's disiease in multiple GWAS or meta-analysis studies were genotyped in two multiplex reactions using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Mean age was 72±5 years (from 56 to 90), 77.1% of the sample were female. Age (r=-0.338,p<0.001) and education (r=+0.422,p<0.001) significantly influenced MoCA total score, but male and female subjects performed similarly. Arterial hypertension was reported by 82.4% of participants, 42.9% reported hypercholesterolemia, 38.4% were obese, 32.3% had one or more other cardiovascular conditions (defined as history of heart attack, pacemaker, or valve replacement), 28.5% had atrial fibrillation, 19.3% reported type 2 diabetes, and 8.5% survived stroke. MoCA scores corrected for covariates were subjected to analysis of variance in order to estimate the contribution of genetic factors to variability of cognitive functions. 11 out of 62 SNPs were significantly associated with the variance of MoCA scores. Most significant contribution was found for APOC3-APOE-TOMM40-PVRL2 gene cluster located on chromosome 19q13.32. 8.6% of the MoCA scores variance is attributable to the cumulative effect of linked genetic markers at this 41 kb locus. The effect of single SNPs at this cluster varied from 0.7% to 1.8%. Other significant signals were detected for variants at CSMD1, CNTNAP2, SORL1, FBXO40, DCHS2,and ACSM1 loci. This study confirms the significant contribution of genetic variation of APOE-TOMM40 linked markers and points out to several novel loci associated with the cognitive performance in normal elderly population. Brain-Stimulation Induced Blindsight: Unconscious Vision or Response Bias?

A dissociation between visual awareness and visual discrimination is referred to as “blindsight”. Blindsight results from loss of function of the primary visual cortex (V1) which can occur due to cerebrovascular accidents (i.e. stroke-related lesions). There are also numerous reports of similar, though reversible, effects on vision induced by transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to early visual cortex. These effects point to V1 as the “gate” of visual awareness and have strong implications for understanding the neurological underpinnings of consciousness. It has been argued that evidence for the dissociation between awareness of, and responses to, visual stimuli can be a measurement artifact of the use of a high response criterion under yes-no measures of visual awareness when compared with the criterion free forced-choice responses. This difference between yes-no and forced-choice measures suggests that evidence for a dissociation may actually be normal near-threshold conscious vision. Here we describe three experiments that tested visual performance in normal subjects when their visual awareness was suppressed by applying TMS to the occipital pole. The nature of subjects’ performance whilst undergoing occipital TMS was then verified by use of a psychophysical measure (d') that is independent of response criteria. This showed that there was no genuine dissociation in visual sensitivity measured by yes-no and forced-choice responses. These results highlight that evidence for visual sensitivity in the absence of awareness must be analysed using a bias-free psychophysical measure, such as d', In order to confirm whether or not visual performance is truly unconscious.

Computational model of precision grip in Parkinson's disease: a utility based approach

We propose a computational model of Precision Grip (PG) performance in normal subjects and Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients. Prior studies on grip force generation in PD patients show an increase in grip force during ON medication and an increase in the variability of the grip force during OFF medication (Ingvarsson et al., 1997; Fellows et al., 1998). Changes in grip force generation in dopamine-deficient PD conditions strongly suggest contribution of the Basal Ganglia, a deep brain system having a crucial role in translating dopamine signals to decision making. The present approach is to treat the problem of modeling grip force generation as a problem of action selection, which is one of the key functions of the Basal Ganglia. The model consists of two components: (1) the sensory-motor loop component, and (2) the Basal Ganglia component. The sensory-motor loop component converts a reference position and a reference grip force, into lift force and grip force profiles, respectively. These two forces cooperate in grip-lifting a load. The sensory-motor loop component also includes a plant model that represents the interaction between two fingers involved in PG, and the object to be lifted. The Basal Ganglia component is modeled using Reinforcement Learning with the significant difference that the action selection is performed using utility distribution instead of using purely Value-based distribution, thereby incorporating risk-based decision making. The proposed model is able to account for the PG results from normal and PD patients accurately (Ingvarsson et al., 1997; Fellows et al., 1998). To our knowledge the model is the first model of PG in PD conditions.

THE EFFECTS OF DRESS SHOES ON STABILITY DURING QUIET STANDING AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION WHILE WALKING

Footwear is an extremely important clothing item worn by all individuals. Currently, there is insufficient research regarding the influence of dress shoes on standing stability and energy consumption while walking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of dress shoes on the performance of normal subjects based on stability and energy consumption analysis. Fifteen normal subjects were recruited in this research study to stand and walk with and without shoes. The stability of the subjects in quiet standing was measured by the use of a force plate based on center of pressure (COP) sway. The energy consumption was evaluated by a heart rate monitoring system (Polar Electro) based on the physiological cost index (PCI). The mean values of PCI while walking with and without shoes were 0.29 ± 0.117 and 0.265 ± 0.112 beats/m, respectively (p-value &gt; 0.05). The amplitudes of COP sways in the mediolateral and anteroposterior directions were 10.4 ± 3.5 and 25 ± 6.92 mm while standing with shoes and 9.3 ± 2.84 and 22.5 ± 5.25 mm in barefoot standing, respectively (p-value &gt; 0.05). It can be concluded that wearing dress shoes does not influence the performance of subjects while standing or walking.

The impact of macular pigment augmentation on visual performance in normal subjects: COMPASS

This study was conducted to investigate whether augmentation of macular pigment (MP) enhances visual performance (VP). 121 normal subjects were recruited. The active (A) group consumed 12 mg of lutein (L) and 1 mg of zeaxanthin (Z) daily. MP optical density (MPOD) was assessed by customized heterochromatic flicker photometry. VP was assessed as best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), mesopic and photopic contrast sensitivity (CS), glare disability, photostress, and subjective visual function. Subjects were assessed at baseline; 3; 6; 12 months (V1, V2, V3 and V4, respectively). Central MPOD increased significantly in the A group ( p < 0.05) but not in the placebo group ( p > 0.05). This statistically significant increase in MPOD in the A group was not, in general, associated with a corresponding improvement in VP ( p > 0.05, for all variables), with the exception of a statistically significant time/treatment effect in “daily tasks comparative analysis” ( p = 0.03). At V4, we report statistically significant differences in mesopic CS at 20.7 cpd, mesopic CS at 1.5 cpd under high glare conditions, and light/dark adaptation comparative analysis between the lower and the upper MP tertile groups ( p < 0.05) Further study into the relationship between MP and VP is warranted, with particular attention directed towards individuals with low MP and suboptimal VP.

The enhancement use of neuropharmaceuticals: more scepticism and caution needed

There is weak evidence that neuropharmaceuticals are widely used for neuroenhancement, doubts about whether these substances enhance real world cognitive performance in normal subjects, and few studies of their safety or efficacy in regular sustained use. More scepticism is needed about neuroenhancement claims for pharmaceuticals and we need to avoid normalizing such use by inflating its prevalence. Some influential neuroethicists have argued that it is ethically permissible for normal healthy adults to use neuropharmaceuticals to enhance ‘cognitive or neural functioning’. Some claim that drugs such as Modafinil and methylphenidate are already used widely in this way. Others have provided advice to prescribers on how to respond to requests from healthy adults for such drugs. An influential group has argued that pharmaceutical companies should be allowed to market drugs for enhancement purposes, with appropriate regulation. We think that historical experience with drugs of dependence indicates that more scepticism is needed about these claims.We should be cautious in adopting the policies proposed. © 2010 The Authors, Addiction © 2010 Society for the Study of Addiction

Human discrimination of rotational velocities

Vestibular reflexes are critically important for stabilizing gaze and maintaining posture, but comparatively little is known about conscious perceptions of vestibular stimuli and how they may relate to balance function. We used psychophysical methods to determine the ability of normal subjects and a vestibular-deficient subject to discriminate among velocities of earth-vertical sinusoidal rotations. Discrimination thresholds in normal subjects rose from 2.26 deg/s at a peak velocity of 20 deg/s up to 5.16 deg/s at 150 deg/s. The relationship between threshold and peak angular velocity was well described by the power law function DeltaI = 0.88I(0.37), where I is the magnitude of the stimulus and DeltaI is the discrimination threshold. The subject with bilateral vestibular hypofunction had thresholds more than an order of magnitude worse than normals. The performance of normal subjects is much better than that predicted by Weber's Law, which states that discrimination thresholds increase proportionally with stimulus magnitude (i.e., DeltaI/I = C, where C is the "Weber fraction"). This represents a remarkable exception to other sensory systems and may reflect the vestibular system's ability to stabilize gaze and maintain posture even at high stimulus intensities. Quantifying this relationship may help elucidate the role of higher-level processes in maintaining balance and provide information to diagnose and guide therapy of patients with central causes for imbalance.

Performance in normal subjects on a novel battery of driving-related sensory-motor and cognitive tests

Currently, there is no international standard for the assessment of fitness to drive for cognitively or physically impaired persons. A computerized battery of driving-related sensory-motor and cognitive tests (SMCTests) has been developed, comprising tests of visuoperception, visuomotor ability, complex attention, visual search, decision making, impulse control, planning, and divided attention. Construct validity analysis was conducted in 60 normal, healthy subjects and showed that, overall, the novel cognitive tests assessed cognitive functions similar to a set of standard neuropsychological tests. The novel tests were found to have greater perceived face validity for predicting on-road driving ability than was found in the equivalent standard tests. Test-retest stability and reliability of SMCTests measures, as well as correlations between SMCTests and on-road driving, were determined in a subset of 12 subjects. The majority of test measures were stable and reliable across two sessions, and significant correlations were found between on-road driving scores and measures from ballistic movement, footbrake reaction, hand-control reaction, and complex attention. The substantial face validity, construct validity, stability, and reliability of SMCTests, together with the battery's level of correlation with on-road driving in normal subjects, strengthen our confidence in the ability of SMCTests to detect and identify sensory-motor and cognitive deficits related to unsafe driving and increased risk of accidents.

Influence of brain lesion and educational background on language tests in aphasic subjects.

In language assessment, several socio-demographic variables must be taken into account.ObjectivesTo characterize the performance of aphasic patients with different educational background on language tasks and to compare their performance to that of individuals with no language disorders.MethodsThirty aphasic patients and 30 healthy individuals were selected. Patients were divided into two groups according to educational level: A (1–4 years) n=15 and B (5–11 years) n=15. Age ranged from 27 to 78 years. All subjects were submitted to the Montreal Toulouse language assessment protocol. The pertinent statistical tests were applied.ResultsEducational level interfered in the linguistic performance of normal subjects but not in that of aphasic subjects, whose performance was influenced more by the lesion.ConclusionsThe present study can contribute toward greater understanding of the influence of lesions and educational background on the language performance of aphasic subjects.

In vitro modulation of endogenous rhythms by AC electric fields: Syncing with clinical brain stimulation

Humans are exposed to an increasing prevalence of weak and strong AC electric fields, as part of daily life in the modern world. Further, electric fields are being deployed to modulate brain function for research and clinical applications. A single electric field pulse, applied via transcranial electrical or magnetic stimulation, can transiently excite or disrupt activity in neural circuits. In contrast, extended exposure to steady electric fields or pulse trains can result in long-term effects on neural activity including potentiation or depression. In addition, it has been demonstrated that brain stimulation with electric fields can improve cognitive performance in normal subjects (Marshall et al. 2006). The impact of electric fields on brain function has motivated the development of therapies to treat a wide range of psychiatric and neurological diseases using transcranial electrical or magnetic stimulation (Wassermann & Lisanby, 2001), as well as deep brain stimulation with implanted electrodes. The mechanisms by which electric fields affect brain function have not been fully elaborated. A recent report in The Journal of Physiology by Deans et al. (2007) presents new data on the interaction of AC electric fields down to a cellular level as well as with neuronal population dynamics. The report reveals a frequency-specific ability of AC electric fields to rhythmically polarize pyramidal neurons of the CA3 region of the hippocampus and demonstrates the ability of AC fields to alter pharmacologically induced endogenous oscillations in the hippocampus. These data have important implications for understanding the effect of environmental AC fields and therapeutic stimulation on the activity of neuronal ensembles. A central finding of this study is that an AC electric field, applied in vitro to a brain slice set to oscillate in the gamma frequency range through bath application of kainate, shifts the ongoing oscillation to centre on the applied field frequency or a subharmonic of that frequency. This review of Deans et al. (2007) is intended to elucidate the connection between their work and other recent in vitro findings concerning electric fields in the brain with some recent clinical findings pertaining to cognitive function and electric fields.

Capit timed tests quantify age-related motor decline in normal subjects

Slowing of motor performance in human aging is a well demonstrated clinical observation. Age-related motor decline has been also confirmed in animal models including rodents and non human primates. We studied the motor performance of 60 normal subjects (age: 20–87). Motor study included the four timed tests (TT) recommended in CAPIT protocol: pronation–supination (PS), finger dexterity (FD), movement between two points (MTP) or tapping, and walking test (WT). Finally we compared normal controls with a group of 30 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) of similar age. Age inversely correlated with TT performance in normal subjects (for PS, r:0.33, p < 0.01; FD, r:0.44, p < 0.0005; MTP, r:0.51, p < 0.0001; WT, r:0.59, p < 0.0001, Pearson). Our results confirm that motor performance (measured with CAPIT TT) deteriorates linearly with age. Simple tasks, such as CAPIT TT can help to study and quantify age-related motor decline.

Technical Note: The effect of refractive blur on colour vision evaluated using the Cambridge Colour Test, the Ishihara Pseudoisochromatic Plates and the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test

The results of a prospective study examining the effect of refractive blur on colour vision performance in normal subjects measured with three different colour vision tests are reported. The Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue (FM100) and Cambridge Colour Test (CCT) results were significantly affected at +6 D of spherical refractive blur, whereas those from the Ishihara Pseudoisochromatic Plate (IPP) test were not. In a clinical setting, correction of refractive error up to 3 D for colour vision testing with these tests may not be required. Poor colour vision should not be attributed solely to refractive causes of poor visual acuity (Snellen equivalent: >6/36). Fastest test times were achieved using IPP, followed by CCT.

Validation Study of the Three-Objects-Three-Places Test: A Screening Test for Alzheimer's Disease

The aim of the present study was to validate a short, ecological test of episodic memory for the screening of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The validation was performed by computing intrarater reliability, homogeneity, internal coherence, convergent, discriminant and known group validities in the performance of normal subjects (N = 65), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients (N = 114), and AD (N = 44) and non-AD demented (N = 39) patients. Intrarater reliability was 0.88, homogeneity ranged from 0.81 to 0.97, and internal coherence was 0.87. With respect to convergent and discriminant validities, the test loaded strongly on memory factor (value = 0.64) and weakly on other nonmemory factors. The known group validity showed a specificity between 87% and 91% and a sensitivity between 92% and 100% in correctly identifying AD in age classes ranging from 50 to 65 and 66 to 80 years. The test is a valid instrument for the screening of AD.

Hemiextinction induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation over the right temporo-parietal junction

Whereas it is widely accepted that the parietal cortex is crucial for visual attention, the role of the temporal cortex and the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) is less clear. There are clinical reports of patients with lesions in different posterior temporal areas which exhibit contralateral visual neglect but this syndrome seems to be less frequent than in patients with parietal lesions. In a previous study, we could show that single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the right inferior parietal cortex is capable to induce both neglect-like and extinction-like impairments of performance in normal subjects. In the present study, we used this method to examine the functional role of the superior temporal gyrus (STG) and the TPJ of the right hemisphere for visuo-spatial attention. Healthy volunteers were asked to detect small dots appearing for 40 ms unilaterally on right or left side or bilaterally on a computer screen. TMS was applied over the TPJ or STG. TMS over the TPJ induced an extinction-like behavioral pattern to the contralateral hemifield. TMS over the STG had no effect. The results demonstrate a functional involvement of the TPJ in visuo-attentional processing of competing stimuli in both hemifields. This region is part of the cortical network mediating stimulus-driven attention which is relevant for processing of competing stimuli.

A HIGH-PRECISION, LOW COST SYSTEM FOR EVALUATING FINGER-TAPPING TASKS

Finger-tapping test is extensively employed to assess motor asymmetry in brain damaged patients and also to study the relationship between handedness and performance in normal subjects. The aim of this study was to develop a computer based finger-tapping system that could provide quantitative measures of finger-tapping performance. The system is designed to be used in a standard personel computer without the need of any other hardware. The software is written in Borland Delphi® 6.0 for Microsoft® Windows 98® and higher operating systems. Beginning with the Pentium® processor, it could be possible to access a time-stamp counter. The time-stamp counter is a 64-bit machine specific register that is incremented by every clock cycle, and keeps an accurate count of every cycle that occurs on the processor. By using a computer with 1 GHz processor speed it is possible to reach a high precision time resolution of 1 μs in finger-tapping tests. Our future prospects for the system are to improve it with various tools such as synchronized recording of electromyography, tapping force monitoring, monitoring of finger angle, and the response to different stimulus parameters by adding appropriate hardware and procedure.

The influence of illusory motion on line bisection performance in normal subjects

The present study examines whether illusory movement (IM) of a horizontal line, induced by a moving background (MB), influences line-bisection performance in normal subjects. The first experiment attempted to identify the speeds of MB that induce IM. We found that when speed is increased from 1.53 degrees to 13.3 degrees/sec, IM increases, but that with further speed increases, IM decreases. Leftward MB induces rightward IM, and vice versa. In the second experiment, we had subjects bisect lines at MB speeds that had been shown to induce IM in the first experiment. We found that leftward MB induced a rightward bias, and vice versa. We also found that there was a relationship between the magnitude of IM and the degree of bias. In the third experiment, by making the target line larger than the MB, we made the conditions where IM was presumably absent. Unlike the results of bisection performed with IM, subjects showed a bias in the direction of the MB. Overall, these experiments demonstrated that the perception of motion induces subjects to attend in the direction of movement.

Short-term Effects of Artificial Tears on Visual Performance in Normal Subjects

Temporal changes in tear film structure can distort the optical wavefront as it passes through the tear layer and reduce contrast sensitivity. Theoretically, any substance applied to the tear layer that alters its structure could affect contrast sensitivity. The purpose of this study is to investigate how different formulations of carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) applied to the tear layer affect contrast sensitivity over time. Additionally, the visual effect of these drops applied over soft and rigid, gas-permeable contact lenses was also investigated. Twenty normal subjects took part in this project. Refresh Celluvisc (Allergan, Irvine, CA, 1.0% high-viscosity CMC) was compared with Refresh Liquigel (Allergan, 1.0% total CMC made by blending 0.35% high-viscosity with 0.65% medium viscosity CMC). Ten of the subjects were habitual soft contact lens wearers and 10 were habitual gas-permeable lens wearers. The stimulus, viewed monocularly, was a stationary, vertically oriented, sine wave grating (14 CPD). A temporal, two-alternative, forced-choice paradigm combined with a self-paced method of limits was used to monitor threshold over time. After baseline data collection, a drop of the artificial tear was applied to the tear layer and the procedure continued for 30 min. This allowed continual tracking of the threshold. Data were collected while viewing the stimulus with the subject's contact lens or with their spectacle prescription. One drop of Liquigel or Celluvisc decreased contrast sensitivity for a 14 CPD sine wave grating (all p values < 0.005). This decrease in contrast sensitivity was observed during spectacle, soft contact lens, and gas-permeable contact lens wear. Soft contact lens wear resulted in a greater decrease in contrast sensitivity than spectacles when Liquigel was applied to the tear layer. None of the other conditions were different between contact lens and spectacle wear. The return to baseline contrast sensitivity was not significantly different between soft or gas-permeable contact lens wear and spectacles for either Liquigel or Celluvisc. In general, Celluvisc had a greater effect on visual performance than Liquigel. These results suggest that Liquigel and Celluvisc alter the tear layer and affect contrast sensitivity. The results agree with patient observations that Celluvisc causes a moderate amount of blur that gradually subsides. In such patients, the shorter duration of blur with Liquigel (about half that of Celluvisc) may be more acceptable. The technique of blending various viscosity CMC materials while maintaining the total CMC concentration of 1.0% may be beneficial in dry eye therapy without causing excessive blur to patients.

A Review of Rating Scales for Measuring Behavior Change Due to Frontal Systems Damage

To perform a critical review of scales designed to measure frontal behavior change. Changes in cognition due to frontal disease or damage have been well described, but noncognitive changes in behavior are often more deleterious functionally for frontal patients. The review concentrates on five behavior rating scales: the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions (BRIEF), the Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DEX), the Frontal Behavior Inventory (FBI), the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe), the Iowa Rating Scales of Personality Change (IRSPC), and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Other scales purporting to measure specific aspects of frontal functioning, but having less research support, are described briefly. The BRIEF and FrSBe have good reliability and large-scale norms. No norms are available for the other scales. The FrSBe and IRSPC have been shown to be valid in discriminating frontal from nonfrontal lesioned patients, but this has not been shown in the other scales. The FBI and NPI require trained raters, whereas the FrSBe, IRSPC, and BRIEF are administered to patients and/or family informants directly. The NPI and FBI are sensitive to certain changes in behavior attributed to frontal systems disruption but have been used primarily in dementia.

Perception of non-voluntary brief contractions in normal subjects and in a deafferented patient

The accuracy of force perception by human subjects in the absence of voluntary motor command was evaluated by exploring how they perceived isometric twitches of wrist extensor muscles produced by external stimulation. Twelve normal subjects and a well-known patient lacking large-diameter afferent fibres (GL) performed estimation, production and reproduction tasks. Magnetic stimulation of the radial nerve and, in normal subjects, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the motor cortex were used to produce weak brief non-voluntary twitches. In estimation tasks, the subjects had to ascribe verbal marks on a 1-5 scale to the forces of stimulation-induced twitches. Loose covariations of marks and forces were observed, while directions of force variations between successive twitches were relatively well detected. GL did less well than normal subjects in detecting directions of force variations. In production tasks, subjects had to produce twitches matching verbal command marks in a 1-5 range, with or without visual feedback. Performances of normal subjects and GL resembled those of estimation tasks and were not improved by visual feedback. In reproduction tasks, subjects had to duplicate stimulation-induced test twitches: first without visual feedback, second with and third again without. Large errors were observed but all subjects did better with visual feedback. In the third step, improvement with respect to the first one was significantly more marked with TMS than with peripheral stimulation. GL improved her performance in the third step, possibly because she could use information provided by group III and group IV afferents still present in her nerves. Altogether, for normal subjects (1) the performances in estimation tasks are consistent with the known behaviour of Golgi tendon organs as observed in animal experiments, and (2) results observed in reproduction tasks suggest that cortical stimulation might elicit, in addition to corticospinal activation of motoneurones, collateral discharges that could be stored as a memory of motor command.
