Performance Improvement of Industrial Gas Turbine for Power Augmentation in the Nigeria Oil and Gas Sector

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the electricity supply situation in Nigeria, focusing specifically on enhancing the performance of industrial gas turbines, GE GT13E2 (Afam Power Plant owned by FIPL) in Port Harcourt. The study encompasses two primary aspects. Firstly, it involves an examination of the nominal operating conditions of a combined cycle system and explores their dynamic performance through advanced simulations. Secondly, the research introduces a supplementary burner into the combined system and conducts a comparative analysis, considering factors such as system efficiency and power output. The power plant configurations are simulated using Gasturb14. The analysis is carried out by establishing the maximum attainable temperature in the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), which determines the number of stages of supplementary firing that can be implemented. The results presented in this paper unveil the substantial potential for power generation with the addition of supplementary burners, indicating a remarkable increase in power output, yielding approximately 187.444 MW. However, this significant boost in power generation comes with an associated trade-off, wherein the overall system efficiency experiences a reduction. From an economic perspective, the additional power generated by the afterburner translates directly into increased revenue from electricity sales. Considering the average residential electricity rate in the U.S. as of February 2023, the calculated additional revenue from the afterburner amounted to approximately $25,641.58 per hour.

Industrial gas turbine performance prediction and improvement – a case study

Abstract The gas turbines (GTs), model M3142R/GE MS 3002, equipping the natural gas compression and crude oil pumping stations of SONATRACH’s pipeline transport of hydrocarbons activity are robust despite their dilapidation and state of service, but mediocre in terms of energy efficiency and power output. According to the manufacturer, for temperatures ranging from 15 to 47 °C, the efficiency of these machines drops from 26.78 to 25.03 % and their power drops from 11.29 to 8.9191 MW. It should be noted, however, that the number of these turbines exceeds 80 units and that their operation dates from 1974. The intention of this paper is to improve the gas turbine performance, mainly the efficiency and shaft power, by an evaporative cooling process of the compressor intake air. Besides, it is proposed to lower the upper limit power in periods of high temperatures to reduce gas consumption. To achieve these objectives, a mathematical model was implemented under Matlab R16, which reproduced the real behavior of these machines. It follows that this simulation made it possible to highlight relevant gains in terms of power and efficiency of the order of 1.361 MW and 3.4 % at a temperature of 47 °C.

Influence of the axial compressor blade row defects on the industrial gas turbine performance

This paper presents the compressor blade algorithm for predicting the defect influence on the characteristics of the stage, axial compressor or GTU as a whole. The developed model is based on the use of Bezier curves, with the control point coordinates calculated using the main geometric parameters of the airfoil, which provides highly precise geometry of both the airfoil and the blade as a whole. The paper shows some results of verification of the developed method and the selected numerical model parameters, as well as the analysis of the defect influence on the airfoil flow conditions in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the algorithm. The main results of the study were summarized and recommendations for further research were developed.

Combined effect of inlet air cooling and fouling on performance of variable geometry industrial gas turbines

The performance of industrial gas turbines is closely tied to the intake air temperature and component performance degradation caused by fouling, erosion, and foreign object damage (FOD). Generally, under hot and humid conditions an increase in the ambient intake air temperature induces a decline in gas turbines performance. With this regard, inlet air cooling (IAC) is an established technique that has been applied to reverse the deteriorating effects of high air temperatures. In this study, a steady-state off-design model for a single-shaft industrial gas turbine (Taurus 70) with a variable geometry has been developed to analyze a cumulative effect of fouling and variable ambient conditions on gas turbines performance. The validation of GasTurb 12, simulations was achieved by comparing the results with the Solar Turbines product catalog. The study has been segregated into four different scenarios: (i) with inlet air cooling, (ii) without inlet air cooling, (iii) with Variable Inlet Guide Vane (VIGV) schedule, and (iv) without VIGV schedule. With an increase in fouling severity level, thermal efficiency and specific fuel consumption (SFC) showed clear deterioration. However, with the integration of the IAC technique, the thermal efficiency and SFC improved that translate into economic gain. A novel idea has also been explored to investigate the effect of VIGV scheduling on performance improvement. It is observed that the deployment of the VIGV schedule improves the thermal efficiency and SFC that were previously deteriorating due to fouling. Hence, it is concluded that the integration of inlet air cooling with variable geometry engine can improve the performance of industrial gas turbines especially in hot climate regions such as the Middle East and Southeast Asian countries.

Modeling and Control of the Starter Motor and Start-Up Phase for Gas Turbines

Improving the performance of industrial gas turbines has always been at the focus of attention of researchers and manufacturers. Nowadays, the operating environment of gas turbines has been transformed significantly respect to the very fast growth of renewable electricity generation where gas turbines should provide a safe, reliable, fast, and flexible transient operation to support their renewable partners. So, having a reliable tools to predict the transient behavior of the gas turbine is becoming more and more important. Regarding the response time and flexibility, improving the turbine performance during the start-up phase is an important issue that should be taken into account by the turbine manufacturers. To analyze the turbine performance during the start-up phase and to implement novel ideas so as to improve its performance, modeling, and simulation of an industrial gas turbine during cold start-up phase is investigated this article using an integrated modular approach. During this phase, a complex mechatronic system comprised of an asynchronous AC motor (electric starter), static frequency converter drive, and gas turbine exists. The start-up phase happens in this manner: first, the clutch transfers the torque generated by the electric starter to the gas turbine so that the turbine reaches a specific speed (cranking stage). Next, the turbine spends some time at this speed (purging stage), after which the turbine speed decreases, sparking stage begins, and the turbine enters the warm start-up phase. It is, however, possible that the start-up process fails at an intermediate stage. Such unsuccessful start-ups can be caused by turbine vibrations, the increase in the gradients of exhaust gases, or issues with fuel spray nozzles. If, for any reason, the turbine cannot reach the self-sustained speed and the speed falls below a certain threshold, the clutch engages once again with the turbine shaft and the start-up process is repeated. Consequently, when modeling the start-up phase, we face discontinuities in performance and a system with variable structure owing to the existence of clutch. Modeling the start-up phase, which happens to exist in many different fields including electric and mechanical application, brings about problems in numerical solutions (such as algebraic loop). Accordingly, this study attempts to benefit from the bond graph approach (as a powerful physical modeling approach) to model such a mechatronic system. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach in detailed performance prediction of the gas turbine in start-up phase.

Flow Assessment on the Effects of Water Droplets on Rotor Region of Wet Compression

Wet compression process has been widely accepted as a measure of increasing the performance of industrial gas turbine, in the present work, in-depth analysis on the principle aspects of wet compression, more specifically, the influence of injected water droplets diameter, surface temperature, and their effects on the behavior of axial flow transonic compressor and gas turbine performance were analyzed using computational fluid dynamic. Injected water droplets and gas flow phase change was most intense in the area adjacent to shockwaves and were the slip velocity of the droplet is highest. Water injection in to the compressor rotor is a little perturbation to the flow field due to the formation of flow separation, evaporation rate, increasing weber number, reduction in the inlet temperature, and velocity vortex pattern relatively different from that of the dry case. The effects of water droplets on the rotor region at injection rate of 1%, shows decrease in the inlet temperature of 11%, outlet temperature 5% and uplift the efficiency to 1.5%.

Industrial Gas Turbine Performance: Compressor Fouling and On-Line Washing

Industrial gas turbines are susceptible to compressor fouling, which is the deposition and accretion of airborne particles or contaminants on the compressor blades. This paper demonstrates the blade aerodynamic effects of fouling through experimental compressor cascade tests and the accompanied engine performance degradation using turbomatch, an in-house gas turbine performance software. Similarly, on-line compressor washing is implemented taking into account typical operating conditions comparable with industry high pressure washing. The fouling study shows the changes in the individual stage maps of the compressor in this condition, the impact of degradation during part-load, influence of control variables, and the identification of key parameters to ascertain fouling levels. Applying demineralized water for 10 min, with a liquid-to-air ratio of 0.2%, the aerodynamic performance of the blade is shown to improve, however most of the cleaning effect occurred in the first 5 min. The most effectively washed part of the blade was the pressure side, in which most of the particles deposited during the accelerated fouling. The simulation of fouled and washed engine conditions indicates 30% recovery of the lost power due to washing.

Computer Simulation of the Performance of Industrial Gas Turbines with Application to Mosul Power Station

A thermodynamic simulation of the power generation gas turbine of the Mosul gas turbine power station was carried out, and its performance was observed. The simulation included detailed modeling of the compressor, the combustion chamber and the turbine based on the physics as well as the common practice in the field. Comparison of the simulation code results with the field collected data indicated agreement to within 2% of the compared parameters. The developed code then used to study the effect of varying the ambient temperature on the performance of the system. The results showed a decrease of up to 21% in the power output when the ambient temperature increases from its ISO value of 15 ˚C to 45 ˚C. Comparison between running the system under constant turbine inlet temperature and constant turbine power output were also conducted.

Operating performance of industrial gas turbines in combined cycle power plants depends upon atmospheric conditions. Compressor fouling caused by airborne particles in the atmosphere and their adhesions on compressor blades is one of critical phenomena related to the performance degradation of industrial gas turbines. Compressor fouling provokes increase of pressure loss in inlet duct, decrease of mass flow rate of intake air and decrease of compressor stage efficiency. In this study, impacts of compressor fouling on the performance of an industrial gas turbine operating at design point condition are investigated analytically. As results, it is found that the reduction of produced power with decreased mass flow rate of intake air caused by narrowed flow area by the adhesion of airborne particles on compressor blades is the most dominant impact on the gas turbine performance by the compressor fouling phenomena.

Uncertainty Reduction in Gas Turbine Performance Diagnostics by Accounting for Humidity Effects

The paper presents an analysis of the effect of ambient humidity on the performance of industrial gas turbines and examines the impact of humidity on methods used for engine condition assessment and fault diagnostics. First, the way of incorporating the effect of humidity into a computer model of gas turbine performance is described. The model is then used to derive parameters indicative of the “health” of a gas turbine and thus diagnose the presence of deterioration or faults. The impact of humidity magnitude on the values of these health parameters is studied and the uncertainty introduced, if humidity is not taken into account, is assessed. It is shown that the magnitude of the effect of humidity depends on ambient conditions and is more severe for higher ambient temperatures. Data from an industrial gas turbine are presented to demonstrate these effects and to show that if humidity is appropriately taken into account, the uncertainty in the estimation of health parameters is reduced.

Industrial Gas Turbine Performance Uprates: Tips, Tricks, and Traps

After industrial gas turbines have been in production for some amount of time, there is often an opportunity to improve or uprate the engine’s output power, cycle efficiency, or both. Typically, the manufacturer would like to provide these uprates without compromising the proven reliability and durability of the product. Further, the manufacturer would like the development of this uprate to be low cost, low risk, and result in an improvement in customer value over that of the original design. This Paper describes several options available for enhancing the performance of an existing industrial gas turbine engine, and discusses the implications for each option. Advantages and disadvantages of each option are given along with considerations that should be taken into account in selecting one option over another. Specific options discussed include dimensional scaling, improving component efficiencies, increasing massflow compressor zero staging, increasing firing temperature (thermal uprate), adding a recuperator, increasing cycle pressure ratio, and converting to a single shaft design. The implications on output power, cycle efficiency, off-design performance engine life or time between overhaul (TBO), engine cost, development time and cost, auxiliary requirements, and product support issues are discussed. Several examples are provided where these options have been successfully implemented in industrial gas turbine engines.
