Effect of chromium methionine supplementation on lactation performance, hepatic respiratory rate and anti-oxidative capacity in early-lactating dairy cows

Chromium may regulate dairy cow metabolism; a chelated formation of chromium methionine (Cr-Met) is available to the feed industry. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Cr-Met supplementation on lactation performance, hepatic respiratory rate and anti-oxidative capacity in early-lactating Holstein dairy cows. 64 multiparous cows were assigned to 16 blocks based on parity and milk yield and then the four cows in a block were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with 0, 4, 8 or 16 g/d of Cr-Met per cow supplemented to a basal diet. Cows were moved from an open dry lot to a naturally ventilated tie stall barn 2 weeks before treatment to adapt to this facility, fed and milked at 0630, 1400, and 1930 h every day. The experiment lasted for 12 weeks. Milk yield and composition were recorded weekly. Dry matter intake was measured every 2 weeks for a total of six times throughout the trial. The plasma variables were measured in weeks 4, 8 and 12 of the experiment. Supplementation of Cr-Met did not affect DM intake of cows. As the supplementation of Cr-Met increased, yields of milk, fat, energy corrected milk (P < 0.01) and lactose (P = 0.01) increased in a linear manner. In terms of plasma variables, insulin concentration decreased in a linear manner with Cr-Met supplementation. As for variables relating to hepatic respiration rate, concentrations of pyruvate and NAD in the plasma were increased in quadratic manners, and lactic dehydrogenase activity was linearly increased as Cr-Met feeding levels increased. Moreover, plasma glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity were increased in a linear manner. In conclusion, our study suggested that Cr-Met supplementation improved lactation performance of early-lactating dairy cows through enhancing antioxidant capacity and hepatic cellular respiration.

Dietary supplementation with N-carbamoylglutamate initiated from the prepartum stage improves lactation performance of postpartum dairy cows

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementing N-carbamoylglutamate (NCG), an Arg enhancer, on amino acid (AA) supply and utilization and productive performance of early-lactating dairy cows. Thirty multiparous Chinese Holstein dairy cows were randomly divided into control (CON, n = 15) and NCG (CON diet supplemented with NCG at 20 g/d per cow, n = 15) groups at 4 wk before calving. Diets were offered individually in tie-stalls, and NCG was supplemented by top-dress feeding onto total mixed ration for the NCG group. The experiment lasted until wk 10 after calving. Dry matter intake tended to be higher (P = 0.06), and yields of milk (P < 0.01), milk protein (P < 0.01), and milk fat (P < 0.01) were higher in the NCG-cows than in the CON-cows. Plasma activities of aspartate aminotransferase (P < 0.01), alanine aminotransferase (P = 0.03), and plasma level of β-hydroxybutyrate (P = 0.04) were lower in the NCG-cows than in the CON-cows, whereas plasma glucose (P = 0.05) and nitric oxide (NO, P < 0.01) concentrations were higher. Coccygeal vein concentrations of Cys (P < 0.01), Pro (P < 0.01), Tyr (P = 0.05), most essential AA except Thr and His (P < 0.01), total essential AA (P < 0.01), and total AA (P < 0.01) were higher in the NCG-cows than in the CON-cows. The arterial supply of all AA was greater in the NCG-cows than in the CON-cows. The NCG-cows had higher mammary plasma flow of AA (P = 0.04) and clearance rate of Cys (P < 0.01), Pro (P < 0.01) and Asp (P < 0.01), and higher ratios of uptake to output of Met (P = 0.05), Lys (P < 0.01), Cys (P = 0.01), Pro (P = 0.03), and Asp (P = 0.01). In summary, addition of NCG initiated from the prepartum period improved the lactation performance of postpartum dairy cows, which might attribute to greater Arg and NO concentrations, as well as improved AA supply and utilization, liver function, and feed intake in these cows.

Lactational response of early-lactation Holstein cows fed starch or floury corn silage

The study objective was to evaluate the lactational performance of early-lactation dairy cows fed a total mixed ration (TMR) based on corn silage produced from a standard starch hybrid compared with 2 floury starch hybrids. Twenty-one (6 primiparous and 21 multiparous) high-producing, early-lactation Holstein cows were blocked by calving date and parity and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 experimental corn silages from wk 4 through wk 12 postpartum using a randomized complete block design with wk 3 as a covariate. The Dekalb blend (STA; Monsanto Company, St. Louis, MO), Masters Choice 527 (LF1; Masters Choice, Anna, IL), and Masters Choice 5250 (LF2) treatments were planted and harvested as corn silage using a kernel processor silage harvester, inoculated, and ensiled in individual Ag-Bags (Ag-Bag, St. Nazianz, WI). The TMR were formulated to be isonitrogenous at 17.5% crude protein consisting of 15.9% alfalfa hay, 35.1% concentrate mix, and 48% of the respective experimental corn silage on a dry matter basis. Crude protein content of STA and LF2 was lower than LF1 corn silage. Starch content was higher for STA compared with LF1 and LF2 silage. The TMR digestible fiber (neutral detergent fiber) concentration was lower for STA than LF1 and LF2 (14.0, 15.5, and 17.9% dry matter for STA, LF1, and LF2, respectively). Growing crop year affected corn silage vomitoxin (0.60, 1.45, and 1.56 mg/kg) concentrations, which may have affected lactational performance as STA corn silage was from 2013, whereas LF1 and LF2 were from the 2012 crop year. Dry matter intake (22.9, 23.5, and 22.4 kg/d), milk yield (35.6, 34.8, and 36.1 kg/d), 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield (38.7, 36.5, and 37.6 kg/d), energy-corrected milk yield (38.2, 36.1, and 38.1 kg/d), feed efficiency (1.79, 1.61, and 1.67 kg/kg; 3.5% fat-corrected milk/dry matter intake), milk fat (4.17, 3.94, and 3.71%), milk protein (3.12, 3.09, and 3.03%), lactose (4.93, 4.92, and 4.92%), solids-not-fat (8.96, 8.92, and 8.85%), body weight change (-0.10, -0.06, and -0.08 kg/d), and body condition score change (-0.05, -0.04, and -0.05 score/d) were similar for early-lactation dairy cows fed all corn silage hybrids. Lower ruminal pH and acetate along with higher propionate molar percentages were reported for cows fed STA compared with cows fed LF1 and LF2. Early-lactation dairy cows fed a corn silage with lower starch and higher digestible fiber concentrations resulted in similar milk production compared with cows fed higher starch and lower digestible fiber concentrations.

The potential interaction between body condition score at calving and dietary starch content on productive and reproductive performance of early-lactating dairy cows

Improving reproductive performance is one of the most important factors affecting the profitability of dairy herds. This study investigated the effect of feeding a high starch (HS) diet and body condition score (BCS) at calving on blood metabolites, fertility and ovarian function and milk production in Holstein dairy cows. One hundred seventy-four multiparous cows were fed common close-up and early lactation diets during the first 15 days in milk (DIM). Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 experimental diets from 16 until 50 DIM (n = 87 per group); normal starch (228 g/kg diet DM; NS) or HS (270 g/kg diet DM; HS) diets. Each treatment group was further subdivided based on BCS at calving as normal BCS (BCS ⩽ 3.5; normal BCS (NBCS); n = 45) or high BCS (HBCS) (BCS ⩾ 3.75; HBCS; n = 42). A significant difference was detected for increased milk production (47.24 v. 44.55 kg/day) and decreased milk fat (33.93 v. 36.33 g/kg) in cows fed HS or NS, respectively. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly higher in cows fed the HS compared to the NS diet. Diets significantly affected DIM at first artificial insemination (AI, 79.51 ± 3.83 v. 90.40 ± 3.83 days for cows fed HS and NS diets, respectively). High BCS groups had greater milk fat content and elevated plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and bilirubin concentrations. In general, feeding higher starch diets to normal BCS cows during the first 50 DIM improved productive and reproductive performance of early-lactating dairy cows.

Interaction of potassium carbonate and soybean oil supplementation on performance of early-lactation dairy cows fed a high-concentrate diet

Potassium carbonate supplementation is known to improve milk fat synthesis and to modify milk mineral composition in dairy cows. The objective of the current experiment was to evaluate the effect of K2CO3 on production performance, biohydrogenation of fatty acids (FA), and mineral composition of milk in early-lactation dairy cows fed a high-concentrate diet with or without soybean oil (SBO), as a source of polyunsaturated FA. Twenty-eight ruminally fistulated Holstein cows were used in a randomized complete block design. The experiment lasted 33 d, including a 5-d pretreatment collection period used as a covariate. Experimental treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial with 0 or 1.5% K2CO3 and with 0 or 2% SBO, and balanced to contain 40% forage (57% corn silage + 43% grass silage) and 60% concentrate. Preplanned orthogonal contrasts were used to assess the effects of K2CO3, SBO, and their interaction. Feeding K2CO3 did not affect milk yield, but tended to increase 4% fat-corrected milk and fat yield when combined with SBO. However, adding SBO to diets increased milk yield. Dietary K2CO3 supplementation did not affect milk fat concentration of trans-10 18:1 or any other identified biohydrogenation intermediates. Soybean oil supplementation decreased milk fat concentration of C16 and de novo synthesized FA, and increased preformed FA. Among the other effects of SBO supplementation observed, concentrations of cis-9,trans-11 18:2 increased, as well as most of the cis and trans isomers of 18:1 and 18:0. Milk urea N decreased in cows fed K2CO3 as compared with unsupplemented diets. A positive relation was established between milk Cl concentration and milk yield, suggesting that the equilibrium of this ion is linked to the efficiency of lactogenesis. The effect of K2CO3 on this mineral equilibrium in the mammary gland remains to be established. Overall, results have shown that potential effect of K2CO3 on milk fat synthesis is dependent on the levels of dietary polyunsaturated FA.

Effects of maturity at ensiling of bermudagrass and fibrolytic enzyme application on the performance of early-lactation dairy cows

The objective of this study was to examine effects of adding fibrolytic enzymes to diets containing bermudagrass ensiled after 4 or 7wk of regrowth on the diet digestibility, ruminal fermentation and performance of lactating cows, and the interaction of the treatments. In experiment 1, 64 Holstein cows (22±4d in milk) were assigned to an experiment with a 2×2 factorial treatment arrangement and a 56-d duration. Treatments were diets containing 4 or 7wk regrowth bermudagrass silage without or with an exogenous fibrolytic enzyme cocktail. The cellulase-xylanase enzyme was applied at 2.33g/kg of total mixed ration dry matter (DM) during mixing immediately before feeding. Experiment 2 was aimed at examining treatment effects on the ruminal fermentation profile. Four ruminally cannulated cows were assigned to the 4 treatments using a 4×4 Latin square design with 14-d periods. No enzyme by maturity interaction was detected for any measurement. Regardless of forage maturity, applying the fibrolytic enzyme did not affect DM intake, milk yield, apparent digestibility, feed efficiency, energy balance, and ruminal fermentation though it tended to increase milk lactose concentration (4.88 vs. 4.81%). Feeding the 4-wk diet instead of the 7-wk diet increased DM intake (22.4 vs. 21.3kg/d), digestibility of DM, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber, and tended to increase 3.5%-fat corrected milk yield (47.2 vs. 44.3kg/d) and milk fat yield (1.88 vs. 1.73kg/d). Therefore, daily intake of net energy and secretion of milk energy were greater for the 4-wk diet. In addition, the 4-wk diet increased the ruminal concentrations of acetate, propionate, valerate, lactate, and total volatile fatty acids, and decreased ruminal pH, without affecting the acetate:propionate ratio. Feeding fibrolytic enzymes did not improve the performance of early-lactation dairy cows, but harvesting the forage earlier tended to improve milk production.

Faecal characteristics and milk production of dairy cows in early-lactation fed diets differing in forage types in commercial herds

ABSTRACTEffects of grass–clover silage (GCS) alone or combined with whole-crop cereal silage, maize silage (MS) or ensiled pressed sugar beet pulp (EPSB) on faecal characteristics and performance of early-lactation dairy cows were studied in 26 herds. Data were analysed with herd as the experimental unit and correlation coefficients among the variables were estimated. Feeding MS combined with GCS resulted in faeces of a firmer consistency (P < .05), containing more undigested fibre compared to feeding GCS alone or with EPSB (P < .05). There was a strong positive correlation between the number of grains and starch concentration in faeces (r = 0.83, P < .001). Increasing forage dry matter (DM) intake decreased faecal DM concentration (r = −0.54, P < .01) but seems to result in cleaner cows, whereas increasing DM intake of concentrate increased faecal DM concentration (r = 0.63, P < .01) but might result in dirtier cows.

Performance of early-lactation dairy cows as affected by dietary starch and monensin supplementation

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of postpartum dietary starch content and monensin supplementation throughout the periparturient period and into early lactation on production performance of dairy cows during early lactation. Prior to parturition, primiparous (n=21) and multiparous (n=49) Holstein cows were fed a common controlled-energy close-up diet with a daily topdress of either 0 or 400mg/d monensin. From d 1 to 21 postpartum, cows were fed a high-starch (HS; 26.2% starch, 34.3% NDF, 22.7% ADF, 15.5% CP) or low-starch (LS; 21.5% starch, 36.9% NDF, 25.2% ADF, 15.4% CP) total mixed ration with a daily topdress of either 0mg/d of monensin or 450mg/d monensin (MON), continuing with prepartum topdress treatment assignment. From d 22 through 63 postpartum, cows were fed HS and continued with their assigned daily topdress. Interactions of starch content and MON supplementation were not significant for any of the variables measured. Cows fed HS from wk 1 to 3 postpartum had higher early-lactation milk yields (starch × week interaction) compared with LS cows, but HS cows also had lower percentages of milk fat, true protein, lactose, and total solids during the same period, resulting in similar yields of energy-corrected milk (ECM) between starch treatments. Cows fed HS had higher early-lactation dry matter intake (DMI; starch × week interaction) and lost less body condition score during wk 1 to 3, contributing to improved energy balance postpartum. No effect of starch treatment was observed on apparent total-tract dry matter or starch digestibilities assessed during d 18 to 19 (±2) postpartum, although cows fed the LS diet had greater apparent total-tract NDF digestibility compared with cows fed the HS diet. Cows fed MON had higher DMI and higher milk yields during the first 9 wk of lactation. However, all cows had similar yields of ECM because of trends for lower milk fat content during early lactation. In part because of similar yields of ECM between these treatments and higher DMI for cows fed MON, ECM per DMI during the first 9 wk of lactation was not affected by MON treatment. There was no effect of MON treatment on apparent total-tract dry matter, NDF, or starch digestibilities. Overall, cows fed more propiogenic diets in early lactation (HS or MON) had increased milk yield and DMI during the immediate postpartum period, indicating that diets with greater propiogenic capacity do not have detrimental effects on early-lactation DMI.

Improved milk production efficiency in early lactation dairy cattle with dietary addition of a developmental fibrolytic enzyme additive

A 3-part study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a developmental fibrolytic enzyme additive on the digestibility of selected forages and the production performance of early-lactation dairy cows. In part 1, 4 replicate 24-h batch culture in vitro incubations were conducted with alfalfa hay, alfalfa silage, and barley silage as substrates and ruminal fluid as the inoculum. A developmental fibrolytic enzyme additive (AB Vista, Marlborough, UK) was added at 5 doses: 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 μL/g of forage dry matter (DM). After the 24-h incubation, DM, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) disappearance were determined. For alfalfa hay, DM, NDF, and ADF disappearance was greater at the highest dosage compared with no enzyme addition. Barley silage NDF and ADF and alfalfa silage NDF disappearance tended to be greater for the highest enzyme dosage compared with no enzyme addition. In part 2, 6 ruminally cannulated, lactating Holstein dairy cows were used to determine in situ degradation of alfalfa and barley silage, with (1.0 mL/kg of silage DM) and without added enzyme. Three cows received a control diet (no enzyme added) and the other 3 received an enzyme-supplemented (1.0 mL/kg of diet DM) diet. Enzyme addition after the 24h in situ incubation did not affect the disappearance of barley silage or alfalfa silage. In part 3, 60 early-lactation Holstein dairy cows were fed 1 of 3 diets for a 10-wk period: (1) control (CTL; no enzyme), (2) low enzyme (CTL treated with 0.5mL of enzyme/kg of diet DM), and (3) high enzyme (CTL treated with 1.0mL of enzyme/kg of diet DM). Adding enzyme to the diet had no effect on milk yield, but dry matter intake was lower for the high enzyme treatment and tended to be lower for the low enzyme treatment compared with CTL. Consequently, milk production efficiency (kg of 3.5% fat-corrected milk/kg of DM intake) linearly increased with increasing enzyme addition. Cows fed the low and high enzyme diets were 5.3 (not statistically significant) and 11.3% more efficient, respectively, compared with CTL cows. This developmental fibrolytic enzyme additive has the potential to increase fiber digestibility of forages, which could lead to greater milk production efficiency for dairy cows in early lactation.
