SWMM stormwater quality model developed to assess the performance of best management practices: a case study of the town of Jasper in Canada

Stormwater quality management is essential for the protection of aquatic life of receiving waterbodies. This study presents a unique case study, whereby a stormwater management model (SWMM) was developed to assess the performances of street sweeping and infiltration trenches to reduce total suspended solids (TSS) loads in the Town of Jasper located in Jasper National Park, AB, Canada. Two catchment models were developed for the Town using long-term meteorological data, as well as watershed and drainage system data provided by the Municipality of Jasper. The quality parameters were calibrated so that TSS loads at the outfalls were within a 20% error of monitoring data. The performance of proposed best management practices was assessed using single-event and continuous data simulations. The results indicated that a combined sweeping/trench control scenario would generate the highest TSS removal efficiency of up to 51%.

Regionalization of Default Parameters for Urban Stormwater Quality Models

AbstractAccurate parameterization of water quality routines within stormwater models can improve simulation, prediction of system behavior, and lead to more informed decision making. This work recognizes that factors controlling runoff concentrations and treatment in stormwater best management practices (BMPs) vary with region, assumes region is a proxy for these factors, and seeks to improve tool parameterization by (1) identifying a regionalization scheme that best explains variability in national datasets of runoff water quality and BMP performance, (2) generating region‐specific model parameter values, and (3) demonstrating how model output varies when using national vs. regional parameters. Of the four regionalization schemes tested, the National Climatic Data Center’s Regions best explained variance in pollutant runoff concentrations from the National Stormwater Quality Database, accounting for more data variability (1.1%) than the watershed’s land use (0.4%). For BMP performance extracted from the International Stormwater BMP Database, the United States (U.S.) Environmental Protection Agency’s Rain Zones explained the most variance (1.1%), which is one‐fifth of the variance explained by BMP type (5.0%). These results were used to generate regional parameter lookup tables for stormwater quality modeling. Test cases from the 100 most populous cites in the U.S. showed national parameters predicted BMP effluent concentrations that were 15% lower than the regional parameters for five pollutants.

Adapting urban best management practices for resilience to long-term environmental changes.

Stormwater best management practices (BMPs) help mitigate the adverse effects of urban development on stream hydrology and water quality, and are widely specified in development requirements and watershed management plans. However, design of stormwater BMPs largely relies on experience with historic climate, which may not be a reliable guide to the future. To inform BMP design that is robust to future conditions, it is important to examine how potential changes in precipitation, temperature, and potential evapotranspiration will affect the performance of BMPs. We use continuous simulation modeling to examine BMP performance under current and potential future climatic conditions and determine the changes needed in site configuration to address future impacts. We perform modeling for five development types in five different regions of the United States and explore both conventional ("gray") and green infrastructure (GI) stormwater management approaches. If stormwater designs are adapted to address potential future climate conditions, this study suggests that the most cost-effective approaches may use both gray and green BMPs. If the magnitude of extreme weather events increases dramatically, then gray practices that provide detention storage may have better cost-effectiveness. Incorporating risk of future climate impacts into stormwater design may help communities become more resilient. PRACTITIONER POINTS: There is a risk that projected changes in meteorological forcing will negatively affect stormwater BMP performance. Under projected future climate conditions, this study suggests the most cost-effective approaches may use both gray and green BMPs. If the magnitude of extreme weather events increases dramatically, gray practices that provide detention storage may have better cost-effectiveness. Flexibility is beneficial in adaptation and resilience planning due to uncertainty in projected precipitation volume and intensity changes.

Quantifying clogging patterns of infiltration systems to improve urban stormwater pollution reduction estimates

Infiltration systems are among the most commonly implemented practices to control urban stormwater and to attenuate pollutant delivery to receiving waters, because they are relatively cheap to build and amenable to space constraints in urbanized areas. However, infiltration systems tend to clog with sediments, which can rapidly reduce their performance. While clogging has been consistently identified as a significant determinant on infiltration BMP (best management practice) performance and lifespan, there have been few methods reported to predict rates of clogging or incorporate insights to urban catchment water quality modeling. We ran a series of laboratory and field experiments to identify clogging mechanisms and quantify infiltration performance declines as a function of sediment loading. The results show rapid initial declines of infiltration rate, primarily due to accumulation of material at the bottom of the infiltration BMP. The performance decline trajectories were sensitive to BMP geometry, with BMPs that had greater lateral infiltration surface area declining less quickly. We integrated these experimental results to a spatially distributed stormwater model to illustrate how they can be used to predict BMP performance declines over time and assess cost trade-offs. Results will be used to adapt algorithms in a cloud-based stormwater management platform to better inform maintenance needs for cities and improve the accuracy of urban stormwater pollutant load reduction estimates that support regulatory compliance tracking.

Evaluation of Agricultural Sustainability on a Mixed Vineyard and Olive-Grove Farm in Southern Spain through the INSPIA Model

The volume of the food produced across the world should be related to agricultural sustainability and is crucial for natural capital protection. Hence, sustainability assessment on farms and the identification of improvements is relevant. A mixed farm of vineyard and olive trees was chosen for sustainability assessment, based on the Best Management Practices (BMPs) that have been implemented. The aim of this research was to assess sustainability on a mixed vineyard and olive-grove farm and validate the INSPIA model for this kind of typology of a farm, which is very typical in the South of Spain. The sustainability assessment was monitored across 5-agricultural seasons based on the INSPIA methodology. INSPIA is based on the application of a set of BMPs, calculated on 31 basic indicators, providing a final composite index of sustainability. The greater the implementation of sustainable farming practices, the higher the value of the composite index. Enhanced soil, water, and air quality, improvement for biodiversity and for ecosystem services help towards sustainable agricultural productivity. Indicators’ results are shown during that period, depicting their relationship with the BMPs. The highest composite index was reached in the 4th year. This paper confirms the relevance of BMPs, such as groundcover establishment and minimum soil disturbance to upgrade sustainability on the permanent croplands in Southern Spain. The indicator-based sustainability assessment is considered a helpful tool in decision-making, which guides farmers towards BMPs performance.

Evaluating the performance of conservation practices under climate change scenarios in the Miyun Reservoir Watershed, China

Climate change is one of the major challenges in watershed management systems. Rising air temperatures, increasing precipitation in winter, and decreasing precipitation in summer as well as increases in extreme weather events have increased flooding and droughts and further affected water quality in the Miyun Reservoir Watershed (MRW). This study used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model with five downscaled general circulation models (GCMs) to quantify the impact of climate change on hydrology, soil erosion, nutrient cycling, and the performance of Best Management Practices (BMPs) at watershed scale, driven by RCPs 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5. Compared with the baseline scenario, the results indicated that climate variability, especially precipitation and temperature, had great effects on surface runoff, sediment yields, and nutrient losses and further significantly affected BMP efficiency, although the magnitudes of change differed among the RCPs. Monthly sediment and nutrient loads increased substantially in all climate change scenarios, especially in flood season, due to the increase in precipitation intensity. Although BMPs were identified to be not appreciably effective in controlling water balance, they were effective in reducing sediment and nutrient losses. Based on this case, a simulation-optimization framework was applied to develop future watershed management strategies with BMP configurations because of their climate adaptation benefits, water improvement targets, and economical cost. The results indicated that the discrepancy among different climate scenarios was reflected by the number and types of BMPs and their spatial distributions, especially structural BMPs. This study suggests that the increasing frequency of rainfall events may decrease the efficiency of BMPs in the MRW, and watershed management should be adjusted according to changing climate in the future.

Análise do desempenho das melhores práticas de manejo para constituição de corredores verdes em Fortaleza -CE.

A Avenida Aguanambi, situada na cidade de Fortaleza, CE, é conhecida pela suscetibilidade a alagamentos em períodos chuvosos. A infraestrutura verde é uma importante alternativa para complementar a convencional e consolidar a resiliência urbana nas vias. Com o objetivo principal de propor a implantação de corredores verdes no sistema viário de Fortaleza, CE, foi desenvolvido um método de análise do desempenho das melhores práticas de manejo em corredores de mobilidade. As técnicas de manejo foram distribuídas com base na hierarquia viária estabelecida pela Lei de Parcelamento, Uso e Ocupação do Solo. A precipitação admitida para a cidade foi de 65,2mm/h com tempo de retorno de dez anos. As biovaletas apresentaram melhor desempenho em vias expressas e arteriais, de maior porte; os jardins de chuva e canteiros pluviais responderam melhor em vias coletoras e locais, consideradas de menor porte.

Performance of low-impact development best management practices: a critical review

Low-impact development (LID), a land planning and engineering design approach for managing urban stormwater runoff, has been widely adopted across the globe. LID best management practices (BMPs) are man-made features that rely on natural processes to manage stormwater water quantity and quality. In this article, recent literature (published after the year 2008) related to nine BMPs was reviewed to highlight the ranges in treatment efficiencies for 21 of the most frequently investigated runoff parameters. The primary function, pros and cons, and factors affecting performance of each BMP were discussed. A frequency analysis of the reviewed parameters showed that total suspended solids, total phosphorous, total nitrogen, runoff reduction, and zinc concentrations were the most frequently investigated stormwater runoff parameters. Five recurring themes were observed with regards to knowledge gaps and conflicting objectives for research related to LID BMPs that include: (i) lack of consensus on which parameters to measure for effective LID adoption, (ii) BMP performance is highly variable, (iii) many BMPs are known exporters of nutrient pollutants, (iv) lack of cold weather performance-specific studies for individual BMPs, and (v) lack of human pathogen-related stormwater quality studies for individual BMPs. Suggestions for future research are discussed to address these knowledge gaps.

AGRICULTURAL BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICE SENSITIVITY TO CHANGING AIR TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION.

Agricultural best management practices (BMPs) reduce non-point source pollution from cropland. Goals for BMP adoption and expected pollutant load reductions are often specified in water quality management plans to protect and restore waterbodies; however, estimates of needed load reductions and pollutant removal performance of BMPs are generally based on historic climate. Increasing air temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns and intensity are anticipated throughout the U.S. over the 21st century. The effects of such changes on agricultural pollutant loads have been addressed by several authors, but how these changes will affect the performance of widely promoted BMPs has received limited attention. We use the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to investigate potential changes in the effectiveness of conservation tillage, no-till, vegetated filter strips, grassed waterways, nutrient management, winter cover crops, and drainage water management practices under potential future temperature and precipitation patterns. We simulate two agricultural watersheds in the Minnesota Corn Belt and the Georgia Coastal Plain with different hydro-climatic settings, under recent conditions (1950-2005) and multiple potential future mid-century (2030-2059) and late-century (2070-2099) climate scenarios. Results suggest future increases in agricultural source loads of sediment, nitrogen and phosphorous. Most BMPs continue to reduce loads, but removal efficiencies generally decline due to more intense runoff events, biological responses to changes in soil moisture and temperature, and exacerbated upland loading. The coupled effects of higher upland loading and reduced BMP efficiencies suggest that wider adoption, resizing, and/or combining practices may be needed in the future to meet water quality goals for agricultural lands.

Multiple Pathways to Bacterial Load Reduction by Stormwater Best Management Practices: Trade-Offs in Performance, Volume, and Treated Area.

Stormwater best management practices (BMPs) are implemented to reduce microbial pollution in runoff, but their removal efficiencies differ. Enhanced BMPs, such as those with media amendments, can increase removal of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in runoff from 0.25-log10 to above 3-log10; however, their implications for watershed-scale management are poorly understood. In this work, a computational model was developed to simulate watershed-scale bacteria loading and BMP performance using the Ballona Creek Watershed (Los Angeles County, CA) as a case study. Over 1400 scenarios with varying BMP performance, percent watershed area treated, BMP treatment volume, and infiltrative capabilities were simulated. Incremental improvement of BMP performance by 0.25-log10, while keeping other scenario variables constant, reduces annual bacterial load at the outlet by a range of 0-29%. In addition, various simulated scenarios provide the same FIB load reduction; for example, 75% load reduction is achieved by diverting runoff from either 95% of the watershed area to 25 000 infiltrating BMPs with 0.5-log10 removal or 75% of the watershed area to 75 000 infiltrating BMPs with 1.5-log10 removal. Lastly, simulated infiltrating BMPs provide greater FIB reduction than noninfiltrating BMPs at the watershed scale. Results provide new insight on the trade-offs between BMP treatment volume, performance, and distribution.

Feasibility of developing a passive sampler for sampling heavy metals in BMPs for stormwater runoff management

ABSTRACTStructural Best Management Practices (BMPs) have been used for stormwater treatment and management for several decades. How to monitor these BMPs performance reliably and economically is a challenge. This paper reports the feasibility of developing a flow through passive sampler (PS) based on Amberlite IRC748 ion exchange resin operated in kinetic regime for sampling heavy metals in BMPs (infiltration systems) for stormwater treatment and management. Tests were conducted using batch reactors and laboratory-scale BMPs. Batch reactor results indicate that PSs performed desirably with consistent and rapid metal uptake, and thus, the resin-based PS is feasible to be used for stormwater sampling. In lab-scale BMPs tests, the resin PSs were employed for sampling influent and effluent of BMPs loaded with synthetic stormwater for storm durations of 0.5, 3, and 12 hours. The removal efficiency of heavy metals in the BMPs as predicted by PSs was very similar to the actual treatment efficiencies obtained from control BMPs, with errors ranging from –5% to 2%, indicating that the PSs can be used for sampling stormwater and monitoring BMPs. The next step for this sampler will be to develop a method for evaluating the volume of water passing the PS during the sampling period.

Inadequacy of best management practices for restoring eutrophic lakes in the United States: guidance for policy and practice

The policy and practice of restoring eutrophic or phosphorus (P)-impaired lakes that relies heavily on watershed best management practices (BMPs) is mostly inadequate. This strategy has been prevalent in the United States for several decades, but there are few documented positive outcomes. To restore most eutrophic lakes requires external P reductions >80% in the United States. A review of BMP performance literature with respect to P removal indicates the maximum expected P removal under ideal conditions on a watershed-wide basis approaches 50%, however in practice reductions in P load may be <25%. The discrepancy between required P reductions and BMP performance explains the observed paucity of positive outcomes. BMPs may be sufficient in cases where watershed size is small (i.e., <10-times lake surface area) and external and internal P loading rates are modest, or where incremental water quality improvement rather than restoration is the management goal. Guidance for restoring eutrophic lakes is provided here. In cases where BMPs are inadequate as the sole restoration strategy, alternative or supplemental approaches are available. In many cases, effective P inactivation methods to mitigate internal P loading and to intercept dissolved P in inflowing waters are required to restore lakes. Engineering approaches or chemical treatment systems can feasibly, reliably, and effectively provide sufficient external or internal P load reductions.

Modified control strategies for critical source area of nitrogen (CSAN) in a typical freeze-thaw watershed

The management of critical source areas of diffuse nitrogen (CSANs) remains challenging in freeze-thaw areas due to the different N loss characteristics in different hydrological conditions and seasons. To address these challenges, a modified strategy was proposed in this study using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to simulate diffuse N loads in the study catchments. Specifically, the spatial and temporal variations of CSANs caused by differences in precipitation and seasons were considered. In addition, the selection of best management practices (BMPs) was selected according to BMP performance and their seasonal characteristics in diffuse N control. The diffuse N load formed during freeze-thaw seasons accounts for approximately 50% of the annual diffuse N load. The diffuse N load discharged to rivers was higher in wet conditions than dry conditions by 127.4% and 181.5% during freeze-thaw seasons and growing seasons, respectively. The spatial distribution of CSANs was more sensitive to differences between freeze-thaw and growing seasons. Among BMPs, buffer strips (BS), no tillage (NT) and reducing N fertilizer applications (RNFA) all showed differences in their diffuse N removal efficiency under different hydrological conditions and seasons, while reforestation operations were not affected by these factors. The benefit of reforestation operations was lower in flatter areas. When areas with slopes greater than 2 degrees were reforested, the average N removal efficiency of the 1st CSAN could be as high as 82.4%. In the 2nd CSAN, the average N removal efficiency of BS was relatively constant across freeze-thaw seasons. Across growing seasons, the N removal efficiency of BS in wet years was 8%-10% higher than in dry conditions due to the lower percentage of lateral flow. The average N removal efficiency of NT was higher during freeze-thaw seasons and lower during growing seasons with average values of 9.3% and 6.1%, respectively. The N control efficiency of RNFA 10% and RNFA 20% (a 10% or 20% reduction in fertilizer application, respectively) was highest during dry growing seasons with average N control efficiencies of 9.6% and 17.8%, respectively. This study is expected to improve diffuse pollution control in cold areas and to improve the understanding of how N removal efficiency of BMPs responds to variations in hydrological conditions.

Performance and Cost Perspective in Selecting BMPs for Linear Projects

Roads and developed land can alter hydrologic pathways, cause erosion, and increase pollution to nearby waters. Best management practices (BMPs) are commonly used to reduce adverse effects of post-construction runoff. This study is focused on providing performance and cost information for optimally selecting the BMPs for retaining post-construction stormwater on site. The performance of BMPs was simulated numerically using an idealized catchment in an urban setting environment. The cost of construction and maintenance of these BMPs were based on unit price. The considered BMPs were bioswale, infiltration trench, and vegetated filter strip. The effects of vegetated covers such as turf or prairie grass on stormwater runoff reduction of linear projects with and without BMPs were also evaluated. Finally, based on construction cost, maintenance costs, and performance of BMPs, recommendations are made to help decision makers in implementing the optimal BMP to control stormwater runoff for highways in urban areas.

한강수계 비점오염원 저감시설의 생애주기비용 평가

환경부는 비점오염원 관리를 위해 시범사업으로 12개의 비점오염 저감시설을 경안천 유역에 설치하였으며, 2006년부터 모니터링이 시작되었다. 본 연구는 비점오염 저감시설의 오염부하량, 저감효율, 유지관리 활동 등의 장기간 수행된 모니터링 결과를 바탕으로 각 시설의 경제성을 평가하기 위해 수행되었으며, 생애주기비용(Lifecycle cost, LCC)을 분석하였다. 비점오염 저감시설의 유지관리는 시설경관을 향상시키기 위한 심미적 관리가 중점적으로 수행된 것으로 나타났으며, 저류형 시설(Retention Pond, RP)이 년간 8,483$, 침투형 시설(Infiltration System, IS)이 8,888$로 대부분 비슷한 비용이 발생한 것으로 분석되었다. LCC는 인공습지(Constructed Wetland, CW)가 가장 높은 것($418,324)으로 나타났으며, 반면에 식생형 시설(Vegetated System, VS)이 가장 낮은 것($210,418)으로 분석되었다. 본 연구에서 조사된 비점오염 저감시설의 LCC와 하수처리장 등 수질처리시설의 LCC를 비교한 결과 비점오염 저감시설이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 처리용량 대비 생애주기비용이 높아질수록 TSS와 TN의 저감효율은 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 비용효율적인 비점오염 저감시설을 설계하는데 유용하게 활용될 것으로 기대되며, 향후 LCC 모델의 기초자료에도 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. Diffuse pollution management in Korea initiated by the Ministry of Environment (MOE) resulted to the construction of pilot facilities termed Best Management Practices (BMPs). Twelve BMPs installed for the diffuse pollution management in the Kyung-An Stream were monitored since 2006. Data on the mass loading, removal efficiency, maintenance activities, etc. were gathered and utilized to conduct the evaluation of long-term performance of BMPs. The financial data such as actual construction, design and maintenance cost were also collected to evaluate the lifecycle cost (LCC) of BMPs. In this study, most of the maintenance activity was focused in the aesthetic maintenance that resulted to the annual maintenance cost of the four BMP types was closely similar ranging from 8,483 $/yr for retention pond to 8,888 $/yr infiltration system. The highest LCC were observed in constructed wetland ($418,324) while vegetated system had the lowest LCC ($210,418). LCC of BMPs was not so high as compared with the conventional treatment facility and sewage treatment plant. On the other hand, the relationship of removal efficiency on unit cost for TSS and TN was significant. This study will be used to design the cost effective BMP for diffuse pollution management and become models for LCC analysis.

Bacteria Removal from Stormwater Runoff Using Tree Filters: A Comparison of a Conventional and an Innovative System

Non-point source pollution of stormwater contributes high contaminant loads into surface water bodies and poses a threat to the ecosystem, public health and economy. Although (pre)treatment standards have not been introduced at the federal level, Rhode Island (RI) has set minimal contaminant reduction standards for stormwater using structural best management practices (BMP). As BMP performance depends highly on geographical location and climate, and the Northeastern United States experiences broad ranges of temperatures throughout the year along with long intermittent periods between precipitation events, stormwater treatment can be challenging. In this field study, two tree filters were evaluated: a conventional unit (CTF) with sand/shale mix as filter media, and a modified tree filter (ITF) with an added layer of red cedar wood chips amended with 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride. Both BMPs were monitored for 346 days primarily for Escherichia coli and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Both tree filters met or outperformed RI’s standards for bacteria removal (60%) and TSS (85%), making them a good choice for BMP use in this climate. Total suspended solids, E. coli, PAHs, nitrate, and phosphate removal is higher in ITF. A controlled field scale tracer test using E. coli confirmed these results.

Methodology for Selecting Best Management Practices Integrating Multiple Stakeholders and Criteria. Part 2: Case Study

The selection of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) for mitigating the effects of urbanization on the hydrological cycle could be a complex process due to conflicting stakeholder views, and varying levels of performance of BMPs across a range of criteria (runoff reduction, erosion control, etc.). Part 1 of this article proposed a methodology based on the application of multi-criteria decision aid (MCDA) methods, which was tested here on a residential stormwater network in the Montreal area. The case study considered green roofs, rain gardens, rain barrels and pervious pavement over a range of economic, social, and water quality and quantity criteria by applying 4 MCDA methods under three different stakeholder views. The results indicated Elimination et Choix Traduisant la Réalité (ELECTRE) III to be the most appropriate method for the methodology, presenting flexibility concerning threshold values, criteria weights, and showing shared top choices across stakeholders (rain gardens, and rain gardens in combination with pervious pavement). The methodology shows potential for more formal applications and research opportunities. Future work may lie in the inclusion of multiple objective optimization, better stakeholder engagement, estimation of economic benefits, water quality modeling, long-term hydrological simulations, and estimating real BMP pollutant removal rates.

Fecal Sterol and Runoff Analysis for Nonpoint Source Tracking

Fecal pollution source identification is needed to quantify risk, target installation of source controls, and assess performance of best management practices in impaired surface waters. Sterol analysis is a chemical method for fecal source tracking that allows for differentiation between several fecal pollution sources. The objectives of this study were to use these chemical tracers for quantifying human fecal inputs in a mixed-land-use watershed without point sources of pollution and to determine the relationship between land use and sterol ratios. Fecal sterol analysis was performed on bed and suspended sediment from impaired streams. Human fecal signatures were found at sites with sewer overflow and septic inputs. Different sterol ratios used to indicate human fecal pollution varied in their sensitivity. Next, geospatial data was used to determine the runoff volumes associated with each land-use category in the watersheds. Fecal sterol ratios were compared between sampling locations and correlations were tested between ratio values and percentage of runoff for a given land-use category. Correlation was not observed between percentage of runoff from developed land and any of the five tested human-indicating sterol ratios in streambed sediments, confirming that human fecal inputs were not evenly distributed across the urban landscape. Several practical considerations for adopting this chemical method for microbial source tracking in small watersheds are discussed. Results indicate that sterol analysis is useful for identifying the location of human fecal nonpoint-source inputs.

Modeling BMP and Vegetative Cover Performance for Highway Stormwater Runoff Reduction

Urbanization generally leads to increases of impervious surfaces, changes of the natural hydrologic conditions and watershed's response to stormwater runoff. The application of Best Management Practices (BMPs) can provide a solution for on-site management of post-construction stormwater runoff. This study investigated the effectiveness of various BMP alternatives for retaining the first inch of runoff from highways and roads in Illinois with the Personal Computer Stormwater Management Model (PCSWMM) and idealized catchment areas. The modeled scenarios included pre-BMP construction when there is no BMP and post-BMP construction with bioswale, infiltration trench and vegetated filter strip. The effects of vegetated covers such as turf or prairie grass on infiltration of various soil types with and without BMPs were also evaluated. For all scenarios, one-inch rainfall 24-hour accumulated precipitation was applied. Typical dimensions and sizing for BMPs were extracted from Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) projects. This study found that runoff reduction for bioswale, infiltration trench, and vegetated filter strip are 70 to 83%; 100%; and 68 to 78%, respectively. Results also showed that prairie grass cover is more effective than turf grass in reducing runoff on various soil types.
