The design and implementation of GECAM satellite payload performance monitoring software

Background The Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is primarily designed to spot gamma-ray bursts corresponding to gravitational waves. In order to achieve stable observations from various astronomical phenomena, the payload performance need to be monitored during the in-orbit operation. Method This article describes the design and implementation of GECAM satellite payload performance monitoring (GPPM) software. The software extracts the payload status and telescope observations (light curves, energy spectrums, characteristic peak fitting of energy spectrums, etc) from the payload data. Considering the large amount of payload status parameters in the engineering data, we have designed a method of parameter processing based on the configuration tables. This method can deal with the frequent changes of the data formats and facilitate program maintenance. Payload status and performance are monitored through defined thresholds and monitoring reports. The entire software is implemented in python language and the huge amount of observation data is stored in MongoDB. Conclusion The design and implementation of GPPM software have been completed, tested with ground and in-orbit payload data. The software can monitor the performance of GECAM payload effectively. The overall design of the software and the data processing method can be applied to other satellites.

Advanced Fouling Management through Use of HTRI SmartPM: Case Studies from Total Refinery CDU Preheat Trains

Heat exchanger fouling is a persistent problem contributing to process economics, plant capacity, environmental concerns, and safety. Advances in research on hydrocarbon fouling have changed the impact of fouling in crude refinery operations, through the use of rigorous performance monitoring and process optimization methods, use of fouling predictive models, use of fouling mitigation technologies (e.g., use of tube inserts), etc. This work presents case studies from two TOTAL refineries preheat trains where the exchangers are subject to fouling. TOTAL has implemented performance monitoring and predictive maintenance software (HTRI SmartPM™) throughout their refineries to improve existing fouling management practice. The software performs advanced data reconciliation, including simulation of detailed exchanger operational data using HTRI shell-and-tube heat exchanger calculation methods and inferring fouling resistance for individual shells for shells-in-series based on dynamic fouling behavior. Dynamic fouling models are used to assess the impact of fouling on the overall network performance. Several heat exchangers in the network have tube inserts (Turbotal® and Spirelf® inserts from Petroval), and their performances are monitored and predicted. The case studies demonstrate successful implementation of SmartPM software in TOTAL Normandy and Grandpuits refineries, enabling economically feasible, technically viable, and environmentally desirable decision-making for refinery operation.

Packaged scalable energy information systems for hotels

PurposeBuilding energy information systems (EIS) are performance monitoring software, data acquisition hardware and communication systems used to store, analyze and display building energy data. Some $60bn are spent annually on wasted energy in the US buildings, and actions taken based on EIS data can enable operational energy savings of approximately 10 per cent in the US commercial sector (approximately two quads of primary energy). However, EIS adoption is low because of various technical and market challenges. This paper aims to provide technical specifications for standardized EIS packages that can help overcome barriers and accelerate scale.Design/methodology/approachA five-step approach was followed: identifying business drivers as key determinants for hotel sector-specific packages; addressing heterogeneity to develop standardized, tiered packages; determining performance metrics for key stakeholders; recommending streamlined data architecture; and developing visualization enabling insights and actions.FindingsTechnical specifications for two tiers (entry and advanced) of EIS packages for hotels have been developed. EIS vendor, integrator and client organization’s facilities and IT staff have been considered as key stakeholders. Findings from six field demonstrations show benefits of cost-effectiveness, through reduced transactional, first and operational costs, scalability, by accommodating heterogeneity across the building sub-sector, simplicity, by integrating meters, gateways and software in the package and actionability in organizations, across various decision-making levels.Originality/valueBuilding owners and operators can use these specifications to ease procurement and installation of EIS in their facilities. EIS software vendors can use them to develop new product offerings for underserved sectors.

Integrated multi sensors and camera video sequence application for performance monitoring in archery

This paper explains the development of a comprehensive archery performance monitoring software which consisted of three camera views and five body sensors. The five body sensors evaluate biomechanical related variables of flexor and extensor muscle activity, heart rate, postural sway and bow movement during archery performance. The three camera views with the five body sensors are integrated into a single computer application which enables the user to view all the data in a single user interface. The five body sensors’ data are displayed in a numerical and graphical form in real-time. The information transmitted by the body sensors are computed with an embedded algorithm that automatically transforms the summary of the athlete’s biomechanical performance and displays in the application interface. This performance will be later compared to the pre-computed psycho-fitness performance from the prefilled data into the application. All the data; camera views, body sensors; performance-computations; are recorded for further analysis by a sports scientist. Our developed application serves as a powerful tool for assisting the coach and athletes to observe and identify any wrong technique employ during training which gives room for correction and re-evaluation to improve overall performance in the sport of archery.

Building energy information systems: user case studies

Measured energy performance data are essential to national efforts to improve building efficiency, as evidenced in recent benchmarking mandates, and in a growing body of work that indicates the value of permanent monitoring and energy information feedback. This paper presents case studies of energy information systems (EIS) at four enterprises and university campuses, focusing on the attained energy savings, and successes and challenges in technology use and integration. EIS are broadly defined as performance monitoring software, data acquisition hardware, and communication systems to store, analyze, and display building energy information. Case investigations showed that the most common energy savings and instances of waste concerned scheduling errors, measurement and verification, and inefficient operations. Data quality is critical to effective EIS use, and is most challenging at the subsystem or component level, and with non-electric energy sources. Sophisticated prediction algorithms may not be well understood but can be applied quite effectively, and sites with custom benchmark models or metrics are more likely to perform analyses external to the EIS. Finally, resources and staffing were identified as a universal challenge, indicating a need to identify additional models of EIS use that extend beyond exclusive in-house use, to analysis services.

SQL query space and time complexity estimation for multidimensional queries

This paper tackles the issue of estimating database query space and time complexities. Initially, queries without joins are considered and classified into five categories in accordance with complexity (type and number of clauses) in a progressive manner. The storage space and execution time complexity measures for each category are then derived after translating the queries into their algebraic representations and then deriving possible relations that accounts for the different factors (i.e., clauses found in the statement). Joins were then considered and similar complexity expressions were derived. Some experiments were carried out against a database of four tables that were populated using a data generation tool, and involved monitoring the execution time with the aid of a performance monitoring software, so as to give insights into the 'join' costs. It is shown that the obtained trends exhibit general agreement with the theoretical expressions for both space and time complexity.

MO‐D‐230C‐06: Totoku's Medical Display QA Solutions “i‐Model”

As PACS gains widespread use, the importance of quality assurance in medical image displays is rising and QA control methods are specified by guidelines and standards worldwide. In Japan, QA guidelines JESRA X‐0093−2005 kicked into full swing last August. The JESRA QA guidelines are based on the current AAPM‐TG18 and the expected IEC standards.In light of such trends in the market, TOTOKU developed a QA software that covers AAPM‐TG18 and the other major standards, QA Medivisor. This software makes acceptance and constancy testing easy and accurate.There is also a demand from medical personnel for a solution that quantitatively controls display quality. TOTOKU's i model displays satisfy such a need. The i‐model displays have a luminance sensor that is installed in front of the LCD panel. It controls the display's luminance, the key factors in determining display quality, and realizes quick and easy evaluation of the display's conformance to the DICOM GSDF. This conformance evaluation function can be used to supplement other standards and guidelines.Furthermore, TOTOKU's performance monitoring software PM Medivisor keeps a constant watch on operating status of all displays connected to the PACS network.This workshop focuses on the basic QA procedures and a demonstration of the DICOM GSDF conformance evaluation on the i‐model display.

In search of a standards-based approach to hybrid performance monitoring

SPItech (Standard Performance monitoring Instrumentation technology), a new multicomputer performance monitoring system, employs portable instrumentation technology and bridges the gap between emerging standard interfaces. Facilities support application-specific trace events, breakpoint-style debugging, online transmission of selected data, and dynamic acquisition-rate control.
