A Multivariate Effect of Employee Relations on Organizational Performance

The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of employee relations on organizational performance. A study of hospitality firms in Calabar, Cross River State. The specific objectives were to examine the effect of Hiring and selection, training and development, salaries and benefit on organizational performance. Primary data was employed in the study using questionnaire instrument. Simple regression statistical tool was adopted in the study. Based on the analysis of the results, the findings revealed that hiring and selection had a significant effect on performance, training and development had a significant effect on performance, salaries and benefits had a significant effect on performance of hospitality firms in Calabar. The study concluded that good employee relations result in highly committed, motivated and loyal employees in the organizations. In line with the findings, the study recommended that hospitality firms should focus more on implementing fair labor practices and building effective and sustainable employee relations that will ensure their growth and survival. Finally, management should devise other measures in which the employees could be effective in order to achieve effective performance.

Advertising Media and Sales Volume in Hospitality Firms in Cross River State, Nigeria- A PPMC Approach

The purpose of this study was to examine Advertising and Sales Volume in Hospitality firms. The specific objectives were: to determine the common forms of advertising and advertising budget used in Hospitality firms, to establish the level of sales performance in Hospitality firms and to establish the relationship between advertising and sales in Hospitality firms. Data were sourced from primary using questionnaire and Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistical technique was adopted. The finding revealed that there was a significant relationship between advertising budget and types of advertising used in Hospitality firms. Also shown that there was a significant relationship between level of sales performance and advertising budget in Hospitality firms. The analysis revealed that advertising budget had a significant relationship on sales performance in Hospitality firms. The study recommended that the Company should devise effective strategy on how advertising budget will lead to growth of the organization. Also recommended that management should be monitoring the activities of sales product so that marketing objectives could be properly determined.

Resource-based view theory perspective of information technology capabilities on organizational performance in hospitality firms: a time-lagged investigation

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the link between information technology capabilities (ITC) and organizational performance (OP) in the hospitality industry by focusing on the indirect effect of sustainability practices, service innovation (SINO), service improvement (SIMP) and the moderating role of top management support (TMS).Design/methodology/approachTime-lagged survey data from 488 hotel managers in the United Arab Emirates was used in this study to examine the hypotheses by the PROCESS Macro.FindingsThe authors found significant support for our framework, demonstrating that ITC are linked with OP. The study found that ITC and OP are sequentially mediated by sustainability practices, SINO and SIMP. Additionally, the influence of information technology (IT) capabilities on OP is moderated by TMS, whereas TMS also enhances the sequential mediating effect of sustainability practices, SINO and improvement, such that the sequential mediating effect is stronger when TMS is at a high level.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first to examine the sequentially moderated mediating effect of sustainability practices and then SINO and SIMP between ITC and OP using a time-lagged design in the hospitality industry.

Linking entrepreneurial leadership and innovation performance in hospitality firms: the roles of innovation strategy and knowledge acquisition

PurposeTo achieve business success in a competitive market, hospitality firms are urged to search for different ways to enhance the firms' innovation capabilities. Drawing on dynamic capability theory, this study examined the role of entrepreneurial leadership in promoting product and process innovation through the mediating effect of innovation strategy and the moderating effect of knowledge acquisition.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through a time-lagged (two waves, two months apart) survey from 137 managers and 322 employees working in 103 Vietnamese hotels. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the proposed hypotheses in our conceptual model.FindingsThe findings revealed that entrepreneurial leadership is positively associated with both product and process innovation. In addition, these relationships are mediated by innovation strategy. While the relationship between innovation strategy and product innovation is moderated by knowledge acquisition, evidence was not obtained for the moderation effect of knowledge acquisition on the link between innovation strategy and process innovation.Originality/valueThe findings advance innovation and leadership literature by identifying the roles of entrepreneurial leaders in managing an organization as a dynamic system and developing appropriate innovation strategy to adapt to rapidly changing environments. In addition, this study offers important implications for hospitality firms that are investing in innovation activities and are seeking ways to promote the firms' innovation of products and processes.

Effects of management practices for using the SaaS system on performance of hospitality firms in Norway

ABSTRACT The earlier literature either measured management practices in terms of the general management traits or did not account for the effects on firm performance. However, the transformation of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems from general to more specific practices, the counteractive managerial goals and standardization and measurement issues requires the measures with more specific goals in a specific setting. The current paper aims at filling the gaps in measuring management practices and its effects on production costs and technical efficiency using daily data of 92 hospitality firms, i.e. chain hotels, in Norway from 2012 to 2014. We measured management practices in an index constructed from multiple criteria that capture managers' user patterns of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) systems. The empirical model identified inefficiency using a translog stochastic frontier input distance function (IDF). The findings show, on average, a 10% improvement in management practices increases production costs by 1.2%, but it improves efficiency by 0.9%. However, the marginal effect of improved management practices on the production cost is found to be U-shaped, while the marginal impact on inefficiency gradually declines to zero. The study also provides managerial implications on how to effectively use the ERP system and improve firm performance.

Competitive Strategies on Firm Performance: A Study of the Hospitality Industry in South Rift Region

Problem Statement: Previous research has shown that strategic management, which is concerned with market competitiveness, leads to improved performance far more often than it leads to no change or even worse performance. These studies revealed the existence of competitive strategies in the firms studied. However, they did not examine the influence of these strategies on the performance of the firms studied. Also, these studies done in Kenya did not relate competitive strategies to performance.General objective of the study: The general objective of the study was to establish competitive strategies for the firm performance of the hospitality industry in South Rift Region, a case of South Rift Region, Kenya.Research Design: The study adopted a descriptive research design as it clearly suits the cause-and-effect relationship studies.Finding: The findings indicated that there is a positive significant association between cost leadership strategy on the performance of hospitality firms in South Rift Region, as shown by a correlation coefficient of 0.260 and a p-value of 0.002.Conclusions: The researcher concluded that the hotel charges low prices to enjoy high-profit margins. The hotel embraces technology to reduce the cost of service delivery. The hotel has a favorable access to low-cost materials.Recommendation: The researcher recommends that hoteliers embrace low prices to attract more customers, which translates to high-profit margins. The hotels should do a proper market search on where to source low-cost materials. Since the world is advancing in technology, hotels should embrace modern technology to improve their efficiency.

Any reputation is a good reputation: influence of investor-perceived reputation in restructuring on hospitality firm performance

This study examines how the performance of restructured hospitality firms is impacted by investor-perceived reputation in restructuring (measured through investors' positive, negative and neutral online reviews), as well as by ‘reputation heterogeneity’ and ‘strategy heterogeneity’. The results indicate that: 1) hospitality firm performance after restructuring increases as investor-perceived reputation increases; 2) a positive reputation consistently increases hospitality firm performance after restructuring, while a negative reputation does not decrease performance; 3) time is needed for negative and neutral reputations to positively impact performance; 4) performance is better for hospitality firms undergoing expansion if they have a positive reputation, for firms undergoing shrinkage if they have a negative reputation, and for firms seeking stabilization if they have a neutral reputation.

Integrated Marketing Strategies and Performance of Hospitality Firms Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

Introduction: This study centered on integrated marketing strategies and performance of hospitality firms amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our specific focus was to determine the effects of advertising, sales promotion, social media, and public relations on the performance of hotels as survival strategies amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: We adopted descriptive research design. Primary data were obtained from 226 customers of 15 hotels using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics while hypotheses testing was carried out using multiple linear regression in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 23). Findings: The findings of the study revealed that advertising, sales promotion, social media and public relations had significant positive effects on performance of hotels. Conclusions/and Recommendations: The findings of the study have provided reliable empirical evidence to confirm that the adoption of integrated marketing strategies such as advertising, sales promotion, social media and public relations could potentially enable hotels improve their marketing performance amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, practical recommendations and suggestions for further research were made accordingly.

Influence of transactive memory systems and strategic orientations on the performance of hospitality firms

PurposeSince the hospitality industry is driven by people, effective utilization of knowledge among various organizational units is required to ensure guest satisfaction and in turn superior performance. Research trying to find the implications of transactive memory systems (TMSs), an integrative mechanism for knowledge management in organizations, has yielded ambiguous and mixed results, leading the researchers to believe that the linkages may not be as straightforward as previously imagined. In this study, the authors theoretically build their arguments based on the knowledge-based view of the firm and empirically test these linkages using data collected from the small hotels of India.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from the owner-managers or senior executives of small hotels operating in the Uttarakhand state of India, and analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM) and Hayes process macro.FindingsIt was found that for the hospitality firms, the TMS is an enabler for performance only when the focus of knowledge creation and utilization is on building effective strategic orientations. Further, the technology orientation (TO) and learning orientation (LO) of the hotel mediate the relationship between the TMS and firm performance.Practical implicationsEffective knowledge sharing among employees helps availability of credible and crucial information about customers, which eventually helps in long-term mutually beneficial relationships with the customers, leading to greater economic value creation for the hotel.Originality/valueBy establishing theoretical links between knowledge creation and utilization, and validating these linkages using data collected from the hotel industry in India, this study offers unique and useful insights for the theoretical advancement of the hospitality literature. This study also makes a case that small hotels investing their energy and resources into the creation of a transactive memory systems could reap benefits through appropriate strategic postures.

Sustainable leadership and sustainable performance of hospitality firms in South Africa

Sustainable leaders use the resources of their organisations to solve environmental and social challenges while generating value for the shareholders. This study investigated the relationship between sustainable leadership and sustainable performance of hospitality firms. Financial, social, and environmental indicators were used to measure sustainable performance. The study used the quantitative research method and the cross-sectional survey method was used to collect data from 192 respondents. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis were used for data analysis. The results indicated significant positive relationships between sustainable leadership and financial, social, and environmental performance of hospitality firms. Recommendations to improve sustainable leadership in hospitality firms include a training and a reward system that focuses on sustainable leadership and performance. Limitations and areas for further study are discussed.

DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE OF HOSPITALITY FIRMS IN SOUTH AFRICA: THE MEDIATING EFFECT OF INNOVATION

Dynamic capabilities describe a firm’s ability to build, integrate and reconfigure internal and external competencies to address rapidly changing environments and improve firm competitiveness. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of four dimensions of dynamic capabilities (sensing, learning, integrating, and coordinating) on the performance of hospitality firms. In addition, the study examined the mediating role of product innovation in the relationship between dynamic capabilities and performance. The study adopted the quantitative research design and the cross-sectional survey method was used for data collection. The Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling was used for data analysis. Based on a dataset of 135 respondents, the results indicated that sensing, learning and coordinating significantly affect the performance of hospitality firms. Innovation mediates the relationship between sensing and learning capabilities and performance. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed. The provision of seminars and training on dynamic capabilities and innovation to top management and employees is important.

Role of announcement in the relationship between online search behavior and restructuring performance of hospitality firms: the case of date and restructuring type

ABSTRACT Whether or not management can moderate the relationship between online search and the restructuring performance of hospitality firms remains unknown. We conduct an early investigation by distinguishing the heterogeneous effects of different online platforms, human moods, and restructuring types of hospitality firm restructuring. The findings reveal the following: (1) Weekday announcements of hospitality firm restructurings bring greater performance increase for hospitality firms from computer searches, but second-half weekday announcements bring smaller performance increase from mobile searches. (2) Compared with equity transfer between hospitality firms, divestiture results in smaller performance increase for hospitality firms from mobile searches but greater and slower-to-act performance increase from computer searches. By contrast, hospitality firm acquisition brings smaller short-term performance increase from computer searches.

Revenue management and CRM via online media: The effect of their simultaneous implementation on hospitality firm performance

The study seeks to identify the effects of the simultaneous implementation of Revenue Management and CRM on business performance among hospitality firms and to determine whether Market Orientation constitutes a suitable business culture for fostering this joint approach in the online environment. A quantitative empirical study among chain hotels, based on structural equation modeling, is conducted. The results indicate that the simultaneous implementation of Revenue Management and CRM in the online environment positively influences business performance, and that the adoption of online Market Orientation is an antecedent of the implementation of both of these marketing processes.

Service experience innovative performance in hospitality firms from a network perspective

The purpose of this article is to provide a conceptual framework capable of capturing the complexity of the dynamics of innovation in the particular case of hospitality services. The conceptual essence and scope of hospitality services are examined. It also addresses the level of diversity among network agents and how this affects innovative performance. The findings suggest that one possible way to succeed is to draw out all the advantages offered by the network to provide innovative service experiences.

Online Review Helpfulness and Firms’ Financial Performance: An Empirical Study in a Service Industry

ABSTRACT This study aims to bridge a significant research gap in the electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) literature: measuring the effect of the degree of online review helpfulness (ORH) on firms’ financial performance. As studies of the impact of ORH on firm performance in the context of service industries in general and more specifically in the hospitality sector are virtually nonexistent, this work intends to offer insights to eWOM researchers by analyzing if and to what extent ORH affects the financial performance of hospitality firms. Based on a re-visitation of the antecedents of ORH stemming from information adoption models, social influence theory and dual process theory, we analyze the moderating effects of the degree of ORH on the relationships between online review valence/volume and firms’ financial performance. Based on the examination of 395,964 online reviews related to 261 higher-end hotels located in London, the third most visited destination worldwide, we find that the degree of ORH positively moderates the positive effect of the reviews’ valence on financial performance, while it does not moderate significantly the positive effect of the reviews’ volume on financial performance. Theoretical contributions to the nascent research stream taking an outcome-oriented approach to the study of eWOM helpfulness and managerial implications are discussed.

Enhancing hospitality business performance: The role of entrepreneurial orientation and networking ties in a dynamic environment.

Utilizing a sample of 192 hospitality firms, this study investigates the moderating role of a dynamic environment, coupled with business and social networking ties and technology resources, on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organizational performance in hospitality firms. This research is novel in that we adopt business network ties and social network ties as two moderating variables along with technology resources between entrepreneurial orientation and business performance, providing evidence on a topic which has received little attention to date. The results posit that in an uncertain, dynamic environment a higher level of risk and entrepreneurial orientation benefit business performance especially when coupled with strong business and social networks.

ABSTRACT This study presents a review of current development in the relationship between the environmental management and performance of hospitality firms. Drawing on 18 hospitality studies published in scholarly journals in the period from 2000 to 2018, the study provided a comprehensive review of the existing literature including the range of performance measures, methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives, and implications for future research.

Let’s Talk About This in Public: Consumer Expectations for Online Review Response

Online consumer reviews are becoming one of the key drivers of hospitality firm performance. Although research has investigated different aspects of online reviews such as their volume and length, issues regarding the effectiveness of review response demand for further investigation. Drawing on theories of expectancy value and communication, we develop and test a framework of consumer expectations regarding company responses. Results from two experiments show that consumer preferences for responses to their online reviews depend on the factors of valence (positive vs. negative), explanation type (explained action vs. explained reaction), and response channel (private vs. public). Perceived usefulness is found to be the underlying mechanism that explains these effects. The study’s theoretical contributions and managerial implications are discussed.

Organisational Culture and Environmental Performance of Hospitality Firms in South Africa

The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of organisational culture on firm environmental performance in the context of the hospitality sector. The study used the quantitative research approach with descriptive and causal research design. The Denison organisational culture questionnaire was used to measure organisational culture. The Denison questionnaire contains four traits namely involvement, consistency, adaptability and mission. The questionnaire was distributed among 500 owner/managers of formal hotels and guest accommodations in South Africa. Data gathered were analysed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling. The results of the study indicate that the four traits of organisational culture (involvement, consistency, adaptability and mission) have significant positive impacts on the environmental performance of firms in the hospitality sector. The findings of the study can assist firms in the hospitality sector to understand the significance of internal intangible factors such as the organisational culture in the implementation of environmental sustainability initiatives.

Understanding the hospitality philanthropy-performance link: Demand and productivity effects

According to value enhancement theory, corporate philanthropy could have a beneficial impact on hospitality firm performance through the demand and productivity effects. This study makes two significant contributions to the hospitality philanthropy-performance literature in two ways. First, the paper proposes a theoretical model of the hospitality philanthropy-performance relationship based on the productivity effect, not the demand effect. The theoretical innovation in this study can inspire future research and enhance the theoretical development in the literature. The second contribution is that the study performs an empirical analysis to test whether the positive link between hospitality philanthropy and performance is through the demand effect and/or the productivity effect. The results of both panel regression and causality tests using data of Taiwan’s hospitality firms show that the productivity effect alone explains the positive link between hospitality philanthropy and performance.
