Key Issues on Integrating 5G into Industrial Systems

Under the auspice of further developing 5G mobile communication technology and integrating it with the latest advancements in the field of Industrial Internet-of-Things, this study conducts in-depth research and detailed analysis on the combination of 5G with industrial systems based on composite structures, communication network architectures, wireless application scenarios, and communication protocols. The status quo, development trend, and necessity of 5G mobile communication technology are explored and its potential in industrial applications is analyzed. Based on the current practical development level of 5G technology, by considering different requirements for bandwidth, real-time performance, and reliability in communication networks of industrial systems, this study proposes three feasible paths for the integration between 5G and industrial systems, including the method to use 5G in place of field buses. Finally, by introducing real-world cases, this study has successfully demonstrated the integration of 5G and industrial systems by extending 5G terminals as field bus gateways. This study provides valuable references for research and practice in related fields.

Research on Dynamic Updating Technology of Digital Maps for Mobile Communications Based on Multi source Remote Sensing Images

Abstract. With the rapid development of 5G networks in China, mobile communication network simulation technology has gradually become a widely studied direction in the academic and application fields. This study focuses on three-dimensional digital geographic information data for mobile communication, including a large amount of geographic information data that significantly affects the propagation of mobile communication radio waves, such as terrain height and ground use types. These data play a crucial role in coverage prediction, interference analysis, and frequency planning in various telecommunications planning software. This article starts from the perspective of mobile communication network management, and combines typical large-scale terrain data production practice projects for mobile communication to deeply study the process and system function design of combining geographic information systems with multi-source remote sensing data in mobile communication network monitoring and management. On this basis, this study designed and implemented a dynamic updated terrain database for mobile communication. This database can update geographic information data in real-time, ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of the data. At the same time, by optimizing the database structure and query algorithms, the speed and efficiency of data processing have been improved, providing efficient and reliable solutions for coverage prediction, optimization analysis, and planning management of large-scale mobile communication networks.In summary, dynamic updating database of three-dimensional digital geographic information has important application value in mobile communication network simulation technology. Through in-depth research and application of this database, the performance and service quality of mobile communication networks can be effectively improved, laying a solid foundation for future communication technology development.

Integrated Communication, Sensing, and Computation Framework for 6G Networks.

In the sixth generation (6G) era, intelligent machine network (IMN) applications, such as intelligent transportation, require collaborative machines with communication, sensing, and computation (CSC) capabilities. This article proposes an integrated communication, sensing, and computation (ICSAC) framework for 6G to achieve the reciprocity among CSC functions to enhance the reliability and latency of communication, accuracy and timeliness of sensing information acquisition, and privacy and security of computing to realize the IMN applications. Specifically, the sensing and communication functions can merge into unified platforms using the same transmit signals, and the acquired real-time sensing information can be exploited as prior information for intelligent algorithms to enhance the performance of communication networks. This is called the computing-empowered integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) reciprocity. Such reciprocity can further improve the performance of distributed computation with the assistance of networked sensing capability, which is named the sensing-empowered integrated communications and computation (ICAC) reciprocity. The above ISAC and ICAC reciprocities can enhance each other iteratively and finally lead to the ICSAC reciprocity. To achieve these reciprocities, we explore the potential enabling technologies for the ICSAC framework. Finally, we present the evaluation results of crucial enabling technologies to show the feasibility of the ICSAC framework.

A decentralized HC-ADMM approach for large antenna arrays

This work addresses the evolving landscape of internet of things (IoT) applications and large antenna array systems, where optimizing spectral efficiency and simplifying design complexities are crucial. Focusing on two key challenges, the study introduces a novel hybrid analog-digital transceiver strategy tailored for frequency-selective channels. By integrating Shannon and Hartley theorems, the approach enhances data transfer rates, thereby optimizing radio frequency (RF) chain utilization in large-scale antennas. To achieve a balance between transceiver performance and hardware complexity, the study employs a decentralized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. The proposed hybrid consensus ADMM algorithm (HC-ADMM) ensures efficient convergence in decentralized optimization scenarios. Comparative analyses with ADMM and existing system transceiver optimization (ESTO) models highlight HC-ADMM's superior performance across key metrics such as spectral efficiency, efficiency per cell, total efficiency, and optimal scheduling of user equipment (UEs). Particularly notable is HC-ADMM's advanced optimization capabilities as the number of transmit antennas increases, positioning it as a promising approach for enhancing overall communication network performance.

A Hybrid Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Approach for Spectrum Sharing in Vehicular Networks

Efficient spectrum sharing is essential for maximizing data communication performance in Vehicular Networks (VNs). In this article, we propose a novel hybrid framework that leverages Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL), thereby combining both centralized and decentralized learning approaches. This framework addresses scenarios where multiple vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links reuse the frequency spectrum preoccupied by vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) links. We introduce the QMIX technique with the Deep Q Networks (DQNs) algorithm to facilitate collaborative learning and efficient spectrum management. The DQN technique uses a neural network to approximate the Q value function in high-dimensional state spaces, thus mapping input states to (action, Q value) tables that facilitate self-learning across diverse scenarios. Similarly, the QMIX is a value-based technique for multi-agent environments. In the proposed model, each V2V agent having its own DQN observes the environment, receives observation, and obtains a common reward. The QMIX network receives Q values from all agents considering individual benefits and collective objectives. This mechanism leads to collective learning while V2V agents dynamically adapt to real-time conditions, thus improving VNs performance. Our research finding highlights the potential of hybrid MARL models for dynamic spectrum sharing in VNs and paves the way for advanced cooperative learning strategies in vehicular communication environments. Furthermore, we conducted an in-depth exploration of the simulation environment and performance evaluation criteria, thus concluding in a comprehensive comparative analysis with cutting-edge solutions in the field. Simulation results show that the proposed framework efficiently performs against the benchmark architecture in terms of V2V transmission probability and V2I peak data transfer.

DRAMS: Double-RIS assisted multihop routing scheme for device-to-device communication

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) is a promising solution for enhancing the performance of multihop wireless communication networks. In this paper, we propose a double-RIS assisted multihop routing scheme for a device-to-device (D2D) communication network. Specifically, the scheme is dependent on the already deployed RISs and users in the surroundings. Besides the RISs, the emphasis of this work is to make more use of the existing intermediate users (IUs), which can act as relays. Hence, the density of RIS deployment in the surroundings can be reduced, which leads to the avoidance of resource wastage. However, we cannot solely depend on the IUs because this implies complete dependence on their availability for relaying and as a result, the aspect of reliability in terms of delay-constrained information transfer cannot be guaranteed. Moreover, the IUs are considered capable of energy harvesting and as a result, they do not waste their own energy in the process of volunteering to act as a relay for other users. Numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed scheme over some existing approaches and lastly, useful insights related to the scheme design are also drawn, where we characterize the maximum acceptable delay at each hop under different set-ups.

On the Performance of Wireless-Powered NOMA Communication Networks

In different modern and future wireless communication networks, a large number of low-power user equipment (UE) devices like Internet of Things, sensor terminals, and smart modules have to be supported over constrained power and bandwidth resources. Therefore, wireless-powered communication (WPC) is considered a promising technology for varied applications in which the energy harvesting (EH) from radio frequency radiations is exploited for data transmission. This requires efficient resource allocation schemes to optimize the performance of WPC and prolong the network lifetime. In this paper, harvest-then-transmit-based WP non-orthogonal multiple access (WP-NOMA) system is designed with time-split (TS) and power control (PC) allocation strategies. To evaluate the network performance, the sum rate and UEs’ rates expressions are derived considering power-domain NOMA with successive interference cancellation detection. For comparison purposes, the rate performance of the conventional WP orthogonal multiple access (WP-OMA) is derived also considering orthogonal frequency-division multiple access and time-division multiple access schemes. Intensive investigations are conducted to obtain the best TS and PC resource parameters that enable maximum EH for higher data transmission rates compared with the reference WP-OMA techniques. The achieved outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of designed resource allocation approaches in terms of the realized sum rate, UE’s rate, rate region, and fairness without distressing the restricted power of far UEs.

On the Target Detection Performance of a Molecular Communication Network with Multiple Mobile Nanomachines.

A network of nanomachines (NMs) can be used to build a target detection system for a variety of promising applications. They have the potential to detect toxic chemicals, infectious bacteria, and biomarkers of dangerous diseases such as cancer within the human body. Many diseases and health disorders can be detected early and efficiently treated in the future by utilizing these systems. To fully grasp the potential of these systems, mathematical analysis is required. This paper describes an analytical framework for modeling and analyzing the performance of target detection systems composed of multiple mobile nanomachines of varying sizes with passive/ absorbing boundaries. We consider both direct contact detection, in which NMs must physically contact the target to detect it, and indirect sensing, in which NMs must detect the marker molecules emitted by the target. The detection performance of such systems is calculated for degradable and non-degradable targets, as well as mobile and stationary targets. The derived expressions provide various insights, such as the effect of NM density and target degradation on detection probability.

Physical Layer Security in IRS-Assisted Cache-Enabled Satellite Communication Networks

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the physical layer security performance of a cache-enabled satellite communication network that incorporates intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. In the proposed system, content caches are deployed at both the ground station and the satellite, which can improve system performance by reducing latency and transmission overhead. Moreover, the use of IRS provides an additional layer of security by enabling the manipulation of the reflected signals to impede eavesdropping. Practical channel models are used to derive connection probability and secrecy probability for both the ground station-IRS-user and the satellite-IRS-user links. The obtained results are then used to evaluate the system’s secure transmission probability, which is maximized subject to the caching probabilities and transmission rate constraints. The paper presents numerical results to demonstrate the accuracy of the analysis and the effectiveness of deploying IRS and caching to support secure content delivery. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential benefits of utilizing IRS and caching technologies in satellite communication networks for improved physical layer security.

Energy Trading and Power Allocation Strategies for Relay-Assisted Smart Grid Communications: A Three-Stage Game Approach

In smart grid, serious packet loss often occurs in the process of information interaction between the Utilities and customers, which results in supply-demand deviation and further increases the cost of the Utilities. In order to improve the information transmission performance of communication networks, the Utilities purchase relay service from telecom operator to help data aggregator units (DAU) transfer information to gateway (GW), so as to improve communication quality and reduce the cost of the Utilities. Secondly, in order to solve the problem of telecom operators' energy reduction and reduce the cost of purchasing energy, we utilize energy supply point (ESP) to collect the surplus energy of retail customers for energy supply, and telecom operator pays a certain amount of remuneration to ESP in exchange for ESP to continuously supply energy to telecom operator. Then, we establish a three-stage game method and system model between the Utilities, telecom operator and ESP, and propose the relay power allocation and energy transaction pricing strategy. Due to the real-time change of energy demand, we consider two situations of energy oversupply and conservative supply, and use the backward induction method and iterative algorithm to obtain the equilibrium solution of the Stackelberg game, including the unit energy price of ESP, total power of telecom operator, the proportion of transmission power allocated to the relay service, and payment scheme of the Utilities. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can quickly and accurately converge to the optimal solution of the problem, and the method can improve the stability of demand-side regulation, reduce the cost of the Utilities and increase the profit of telecom operator.

RSSI-adaptive local dual-mode communication for the Internet of Things in power distribution

Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT)’s rapid development is placing new demands on communication technology for power distribution. This paper proposes the application scheme of RSSI adaptive and dual-mode communication technology in the power distribution area, realizes the dual-mode networking technology adopted to improve communication quality, and verifies the reliability and superiority of the dual-mode communication technology scheme through analysis and application. The RSSI adaptive dual-mode communication module is designed, the RSSI model algorithm is modified, and the logical topology of the communication network and the data processing technology based on compressed sensing are analyzed. We focus on analyzing the performance of dual-mode communication networks for power consumption information collection and the information reception rate and real-time performance of MQTT protocol mapping for power distribution IoT. The average transmission delay was tested to be 198.5ms for QoS=0, 478.0ms for QoS=1, and 786.3ms for QoS=2 without encryption. When using SASL/TLS for transmission encryption, the average transmission delay is 992.7ms for QoS=0, 1203.6ms for QoS=1, and 1461.1ms for QoS=2.

Jarvis-Patrick-Clusterative African Buffalo Optimized Deep Learning Classifier for Device-to-Device Communication in 5G Networks

ABSTRACT With the fifth generation (5G), there are several mobiles devices may connect to the network from any location. Device-to-device (D2D) communication is a crucial component of 5G wireless networks since it increases performance. D2D communication in the 5G networks is the subject of extensive study. However, the existing D2D communication techniques did not show an improvement in energy economy or a reduction in latency. The Jarvis-Patrick-Clusterative African Buffalo Optimised Deep Learning (JPCABODL) Model was created to overcome the problems. The JPCABODL Model's main goal is to improve D2D communication performance in 5G networks using a deep learning classifier with improved energy efficiency and lower latency. Four layers make up the JPCABODL Model: one output layer, two hidden levels, and one layer for device-to-device communication. A layer of input is the total number of mobile devices. After that, each mobile device's received signal strength (RSS) and residual energy are taken into account when the Jarvis-Patrick-Clustering procedure is carried out at hidden layer 1. After that, each cluster's cluster head is selected from mobile devices with the highest residual energy, bandwidth, and RSS. The cluster is then transmitted to hidden layer 2 together with information about the cluster leader. African Buffalo Optimisation is used in that layer to choose the ideal cluster head. In 5G networks, effective device-to-device communication is accomplished with the aid of an ideal cluster head. The JPCABODL Model and current techniques are used for simulation, and several metrics such as energy efficiency, data delivery ratio, packet loss rate, throughput, and latency are measured. When compared to traditional approaches, the experimental evaluation of the JPCABODL Model enhances EE, DDR, and minimizes latency.

Research on flow scheduling of train communication based on time-sensitive network

The rapid development of intelligent rail transportation equipment is raising higher requirements for the real-time performance of Train Communication Network (TCN) data transmission. Time-Sensitive Network (TSN) has gained widespread attention in train communication due to its advantages of high transmission rates and deterministic latency. Firstly, for addressing the flow scheduling problem in TSN, a TCN topology model supports TSN is designed. It establishes a multi-objective flow scheduling model based on a priority strategy, aiming to minimize average response time and makespan while ensuring a scheduling success rate. Then, to solve the routing selection problem, a joint scheduling algorithm based on multi-level routing selection is adopted, providing feasible scheduling solutions. Finally, an improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) algorithm is introduced to iteratively and selectively optimize the scheduling solutions. This approach resolves the flow ordering problem while achieving optimization for the scheduling model. The feasibility of this scheduling approach is validated through simulations, and the results demonstrate significant advantages of the proposed model and algorithm in terms of scheduling success rate and real-time performance, providing effective solutions for flow scheduling in TCN.

Multipoint communication using a fog-robotic coordinated nodal conveying system for wireless networks

Fog computing is a framework that makes use of the features of both cloud and edge devices to provide quality services, support mobility, reduce delay & latency, and to provide other services to the recent technologies. The fog computing is incorporated in wireless networks using coordinated multi-point communication, which helps to in sending raw bits over a physical link that connects network swarm nodes rather than logical data packets. This, inturn improves system performance and service quality. In the physical layer, the multipoint connection between swarm nodes established during communication in cellular systems consistently reveals limitations in signaling cost, energy consumption, delay and latency. These limitations nevertheless define a wireless network that integrates wide-ranging applications, from independent systems to extended reality (XR) to support minimal network infrastructure. In this paper, the proposed Fog-Robotic Coordinated Nodal Conveying System (FCNCS) helps optimize the data transmission and lowers the signaling cost of coordinated multipoint communication in the physical layer of a wireless system. Besides, optimized link utilization helps to lower signaling costs by 14.3% with improved coordinated multi-point communication network performance efficiency by 85.5% in the physical layer of the wireless framework compared to the existing methods.

Radio Map-Based Trajectory Design for UAV-Assisted Wireless Energy Transmission Communication Network by Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, we consider a wireless energy-carrying communication network of a UAV. In this communication network, the internet of things (IoT) devices maintain their work via the power supply of batteries. The energy of batteries is slowly consumed over time. The UAV adopts the full-duplex working mode and the flight hover protocol, that is, they can power the target device in the hover position and collect base station data at the same time. Unlike traditional methods, which seek to achieve wireless energy transmission, this paper adopts deep reinforcement learning. On the one hand, the deep reinforcement learning algorithm seeks to solve the dynamic programming problem without a model. The traditional method often requires a prior channel model, to form a formula about variables for convex optimization, while reinforcement learning only requires the interaction between agents and the environment. Then, the strategy is optimized according to the reward function feedback. On the other hand, traditional optimization methods generally solve static programming problems. Since IoT devices constantly collect information from the surrounding physical environment, and their requirements for power supply change dynamically, traditional methods are relatively complex and require huge computational overhead, while deep reinforcement learning performs well in complex problems. The purpose of our work is that with the assistance of the radio map, a UAV can find the best hover position, maximize the energy supplied by the UAV, maximize the data throughput collected, and minimize the energy consumption. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can well find the best hovering position of the UAVs and significantly improve the performance of the UAV-assisted wireless energy transmission communication network.

Dissecting wireless body area networks routing protocols: Classification, comparative analysis, and research challenges

SummaryIn the present scenario, wireless body area network (WBAN) use case has gone beyond medical monitoring (e.g., E‐Healthcare) and has become a vital part of our daily lives. WBANs, applied in E‐Healthcare systems, extract the physiological parameters through the implanted (in‐body) and/or wearable (on‐body) sensors applied to the human body and route them to the remote server in a systematized and well‐grounded manner. Thus, routing is the most primitive and non‐trivial task in WBANs for prompt and proper delivery of sensed data. The design of routing protocol is crucial for efficacious communication and high network performance. Therefore, the target of this paper is to present an all‐encompassing taxonomy of the state‐of‐the‐art routing protocols in WBANs. Firstly, this paper provides an insight into WBANs and their related projects. Next, WBAN routing challenges are explored, and after clustering these challenges based on their operating mechanism, the routing protocols are categorized into eight categories, which correspond to cluster‐ and tree‐based, cross‐layer‐based, fuzzy‐based, interference‐based, posture‐based, QoS‐based, SDN‐based, and temperature‐based routing protocols. Furthermore, comparison tables highlighting the goals, strengths, limitations, and novelty of each protocol, along with a qualitative comparison table of the routing protocols for each category based on their features are furnished. This exhaustive survey can serve as a starting point for WBAN researchers, as open research issues have been highlighted in the discussion section.

Deep-Reinforcement-Learning-Based Joint 3-D Navigation and Phase-Shift Control for Mobile Internet of Vehicles Assisted by RIS-Equipped UAVs

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are utilized to improve the performance of wireless communication networks (WCNs), notably, in the context of Internet-of-things (IoT). However, the application of UAVs, as active aerial base stations (BSs)/relays, is questionable in the fifth-generation (5G) WCNs with quasi-optic millimeter wave (mmWave) and beyond in 6G (visible light) WCNs. Because path loss is high in 5G/6G networks that attenuate, even, the line-of-sight (LoS) communicating signals propagated by UAVs. Besides, the limited energy/size/weight of UAVs makes it cost-deficient to design aerial multi-input/output BSs for active beamforming to strengthen the signals. Equipping UAVs with the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), a passive component, can help to address the problems with UAV-assisted communication in 5G and optical 6G networks. We propose adopting the RIS-equipped UAV (RISeUAV) to provide aerial LoS service and facilitate communication for mobile Internet-of-vehicles (IoVs) in an obstructed dense urban area covered by 5G/6G. RISeUAV-aided wireless communication facilitates vehicle-to-vehicle/everything communication for IoVs for updating IoT information required for sensor fusion and autonomous driving. However, autonomous navigation of RISeUAV for this purpose is a multilateral problem and is computationally challenging for being optimally implemented in real-time. We intelligently automated RISeUAV navigation using deep reinforcement learning to address the optimality and time complexity issues. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the method.

Railway Cyber-Security in the Era of Interconnected Systems: A Survey

Technological advances in the telecommunications industry have brought significant advantages in the management and performance of communication networks. The railway industry is among the ones that have benefited the most. These interconnected systems, however, have a wide area exposed to cyberattacks. This survey examines the cybersecurity aspects of railway systems by considering the standards, guidelines, frameworks, and technologies used in the industry to assess and mitigate cybersecurity risks, particularly regarding the relationship between safety and security. To do so, we dedicate specific attention to signaling, which fundamental reliance on computer and communication technologies allows us to explore better the multifaceted nature of the security of modern hyperconnected railway systems. With this in mind, we then move on to analyzing the approaches and tools that practitioners can use to facilitate the cyber security process. In detail, we present a view on cyber ranges as an enabling technology to model and emulate computer networks and attack-defense scenarios, study vulnerabilities’ impact, and finally devise countermeasures. We also discuss several possible use cases strongly connected to the railway industry reality.

Deep-Learning-Assisted IoT-Based RIS for Cooperative Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are software-controlled passive devices that can be used as relay (R) systems to reflect incoming signals from a source (S) to a destination (D) in a cooperative manner with optimum signal strength to improve the performance of wireless communication networks. The configurability and flexibility of an RIS deployed in an Internet-of-Things (IoT)-based network can enable network designers to devise stand-alone or cooperative configurations that have considerable advantages over conventional networks. In this paper, two new deep neural network (DNN)-assisted cooperative RIS models, namely, DNNR-CRIS and DNNR,D-CRIS, are proposed for cooperative communications. In DNNR-CRIS model, the potential of RIS deployment as an IoT-based relay element in a next-generation cooperative network is investigated using deep learning (DL) techniques for RIS phase optimization. In addition, to reduce the maximum likelihood (ML) complexity at D, a new DNN-based symbol detection method is presented with the DNNR,D-CRIS model combined with DNN-assisted phase optimization. For a different number of relays and receiver configurations, the bit error rate (BER) performance results of the proposed DNNR-CRIS and DNNR,D-CRIS models and traditional cooperative RIS (CRIS) scheme (without a DNN) are presented for a multi-relay cooperative communication scenario with path loss effects. It is revealed that the proposed DNN-based models show promising results in terms of BER, even in high-noise environments with low system complexity.

Applications of Machine Learning in Mobile Networking

Abstract Communication networks are constantly increasing in size and complexity. Hence, the traditional rule-based algorithms of these networks will probably not operate at their most effective efficiency. Machine learning (ML) is being used these days to solve tough problems in a variety of industries, including banking, healthcare, and enterprise. Communication network performance can be improved using computational models that can deliver ML algorithms. This paper investigates the use of ML models in communication networks for prediction, intruder detection, route and path allocation, quality of service enhancement, and resource management. A review of the current literature suggests that there is a wealth of potential for researchers to leverage ML to solve challenging network performance problems, especially in the development of software-based networks and 5G.
