2-(Perfluorooctyl) ethyl acrylate functionalized pervoskite: A selective and stable photoelectrochemical platform for ultrasensitive detection of cholesterol

Herein, a novel ultrasensitive cholesterol photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was designed based on fluorinated molecularly imprinted polymers (FMIPs) functionalized CH3NH3PbI3@carbon nanodots (CH3NH3PbI3@CNDs) platform. 2-(Perfluorooctyl) ethyl acrylate (PFEA), a functional monomer, was chosen not only to endow CH3NH3PbI3 good selectivity but also improve its aqueous stability because of the fluorine containing long hydrophobic chain. Furthermore, the FMIPs can inhibit the recombination of electron holes and prolonged the carrier life time, and dramatically enhance the charge transfer efficiency by the reduction of defect density through the polymer passivation of grain boundaries of perovskite. The morphology, the enhanced hydrophobicity and photoelectric properties of FMIPs@CH3NH3PbI3@CNDs interface was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, scanning electron microscope, contact angle, photoluminescence spectrum and intensity modulated photovoltage spectrum, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range of the designed PEC sensor for cholesterol detection was 1.0 × 10−13–1.0 × 10−9 mol/L, and the detection limit was down to 8.9 × 10−14 mol/L. The new PEC sensor exhibited specific selectivity, good stability and hypersensitivity, and was successfully applied to cholesterol detection in human serum samples. This work extended the development of the MIPs based sensor and the high-performance perovskite.

Optimization the synthesis parameters of gas-wetting alteration agent and evaluation its performance

Wettability alteration of condensate gas reservoirs is very important for improving the productivity of condensate wells. In this work, a novel gas-wetting alteration agent was synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The synthesis process conditions were optimized by the response surface methodology based on the yield of the product. Wettability alteration effect of the polymer was evaluated by the contact angle method and the Owens two-liquid method. Experimental data showed that the effect of temperature on yield is significantly greater than the other two factors. The most preferred synthesis parameters were as follows: a reaction temperature of 80 °C, a molar ratio of acrylic acid to perfluorooctylethyl acrylate of 2.5:1 and 0.06 g of potassium persulfate. Under such optimal specifications, the test yield (84.36%) was almost close to the predicted yield (83.66%). Furthermore, the contact angle of water and n-hexadecane on the core surface increased from 34° and 0° to 126° and 102° after treated by 1.5 wt.% polymer solution. The surface free energy reduced from 73 mN/m to 8.2 mN/m at equal mass fractions. These values were verified by spontaneous imbibition. The results proved that the core has been rendered hydrophobic and oleophobic properties after being treated with the synthesized gas-wetting alteration agent.

Effect of molecular mobility of pre-ordered phase on crystallization in microphase-separated lamellar morphology of strongly segregated crystalline-crystalline diblock copolymers

The effect of molecular mobility of a pre-crystallized phase on the isothermal crystallization in the microphase-separated lamellar morphology of a strongly segregated crystalline-crystalline block copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(perfluorooctylethyl acrylate) (PEG-b-PFA-C8), was investigated. The diblock copolymer produced a microphase-separated lamellar morphology in the melt state, and the precedent crystallization of PFA-C8 blocks provided the lamellar confinement field. The counter PEG block crystallized within the lamellar confinement field. The molecular mobility of the pre-crystallized PFA-C8 phase was modulated by the thermal history. The structural evolution was monitored by a complementary combination of in situ time-resolved simultaneous small-angle X-ray scattering/wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurements and thermal analyses. The degree of crystallinity and the melting temperature of the PEG crystals were associated with the molecular mobility of the pre-crystallized PFA-C8 phase. The highly packed PFA-C8 phase (higher-ordered phase) constrained the PEG crystallization, whereas the loosely packed PFA-C8 phase (lower-ordered phase) caused a weak restriction in the PEG crystallization to give relatively ordered PEG crystals. Subsequent crystallization in a confinement field of crystalline-crystalline block copolymers was controlled by adjusting the molecular mobility of the pre-crystallized phase.

Crystallization-induced structure fluctuation of crystallized microdomain structure composed of strongly segregated crystalline-crystalline diblock copolymers

Crystallization-induced structure fluctuations in the layer thickness direction and disordering of pre-crystallized structure in crystallized microdomain structure that consist of a strongly segregated crystalline-crystalline diblock copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(perfluorooctyl ethyl acrylate) (PEG-b-PFA-C8), were investigated. The structure formation process during isothermal crystallization was monitored by in-situ time-resolved simultaneous SAXS/WAXD measurements and thermal analysis. At early stage of isothermal crystallization, three dimensional growth of the PEG lamellar crystals within lamellar microphase-separated morphology induced the volume shrinkage of PEG phase, resulting in the reduction of PEG layer thickness, increase of PFA-C8 layer thickness and disordering of pre-crystallized PFA-C8 crystals. At late stage of isothermal crystallization, one dimensional growth, thickening of PEG lamellar crystals induced the increase of PEG layer thickness and reduction of PFA-C8 layer thickness. The structure fluctuation in the crystallized microdomain structure depends on the crystal growth dimension.

Abstract: A series of terpolymers based on stearyl methacrylate (SMA), n-methyol acrylamide (n-MAM), and 2-(perfluorooctyl) ethyl acrylate (PFOEA) were synthesized by changing PFOEA contents up to 8 wt% in order to obtain optimal water-repellent properties. In addition, various contents of m-isopropenyl-α,α’-dimethylben-zyl isocyanate (TMI) from 1 to 4 wt% were added to the above terpolymers with 4 wt% of PFOEA content. The emulsion polymerization was carried out using tridecyl alcohol (EO) 7 (TDA-7) as a nonionic surfactant, alkyl dimethyl amine derivatives (ADAD) as a cationic surfactant, and 2,2’-azobis(2-amidinopropane dihy-drochoride) (AAPDL) as an initiator. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopies, contact angle, surface energy, and water-repellency. Surface and thermal properties were analyzed by SEM, TGA, and DSC. Precise characterization of outermost surface of crystalline–crystalline diblock copolymer thin films using synchrotron radiation soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

The effectiveness of energy-resolved (ER) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with synchrotron radiation (SR) soft X-ray source for analysis of the outermost chemical composition of polymer materials is demonstrated. The surface molecular aggregation state of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/poly(perfluorooctylethyl acrylate) (PFA-C8) was confirmed using ER-XPS. The XPS with SR soft X-ray source detect only the single bilayer structure of the PFA-C8 component, whereas the XPS with Mg Kα X-ray source detect both the PFA-C8 component at the outermost surface and PEG component at the interior.

Robust Superamphiphobic Coatings Based on Silica Particles Bearing Bifunctional Random Copolymers

Reported herein is the growth of bifunctional random copolymer chains from silica particles through a "grafting from" approach and the use of these copolymer-bearing particles to fabricate superamphiphobic coatings. The silica particles had a diameter of 90 ± 7 nm and were prepared through a modified Stöber process before atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators were introduced onto their surfaces. Bifunctional copolymer chains bearing low-surface-free-energy fluorinated units and sol-gel-forming units were then grafted from these silica particles by surface-initiated ATRP. Perfluorooctyl ethyl acrylate (FOEA) and 3-(triisopropyloxy)silylpropyl methacrylate (IPSMA) were respectively used as fluorinated and sol-gel-forming monomers in this reaction. Hydrolyzing the IPSMA units in the presence of an acid catalyst yielded silica particles that were adorned with silanol-bearing copolymer chains. Coatings were prepared by spraying these hydrolyzed silica particles onto glass and cotton substrates. A series of four different copolymer-functionalized silica particles samples bearing copolymers with similar FOEA molar fractions (fF) of ~80% but with different copolymer grafting mass ratios (gm) that ranged between 12.3 wt% and 58.8 wt%, relative to silica, were prepared by varying the polymerization protocols. These copolymer-bearing silica particles with a gm exceeding 34.1 wt% were used to coat glass and cotton substrates, yielding superamphiphobic surfaces. More importantly, these particulate-based coatings were robust and resistant to solvent extraction and NaOH etching thanks to the self-cross-linking of the copolymer chains and their covalent attachment to the substrates.

Structural analysis and surface wettability of a novel alternated vinylidene cyanide with fluorinated vinyl ether copolymer

The structure, thermal properties and surface wettability of a novel alternating poly(VCN-alt-FAVE8) copolymer based on vinylidene cyanide (VCN) and perfluorooctyl ethyl vinyl ether (FAVE8) were investigated via both temperature-variable wide-angle X-ray powder diffraction (WAXD) and thin-film WAXD using a small angle incidence synchrotron radiation source, differential scanning calorimetry and contact angle measurements, respectively. The results of the WAXD and thin-film WAXD indicated that the alternating copolymer possessed a smectic liquid-crystalline phase at ambient temperature with a couple of fluoroalkyl side chains forming a bilayer with a 3.24 nm spacing and that the fluoroalkyl side chains in a thin-film on a Si wafer align perpendicularly to the surface. The isotropization temperature of the alternating copolymer was 150 °C, which was higher than the 29.5 °C for the poly(FAVE8) homopolymer. The spin-coated poly(VCN-alt-FAVE8) copolymer thin-film yielded high static contact angles for both water and oil similar to those for poly(perfluorooctyl ethyl acrylate), which is known as a superhydrophobic polymer. Dynamic contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements in both the dry and hydrated states suggested that the polar cyano and ether groups are enriched at the surface in the wet state, and this reorganization of the surface polar groups caused a large hysteresis of the contact angle. High ordered structure, thermal property and surface wettability of a novel alternated copolymer of vinylidene cyanide and perfluorooctyl ethyl vinyl ether were investigated with wide-angle X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurement. The alternated copolymer showed a smectic liquid crystalline structure and extremely high isotropization temperature of 150 °C, compared with 29.5 °C for the perfluorooctyl ethyl vinyl ether homopolymer. The alternated copolymer also showed large contact angle hysteresis, indicating that surface reorganization of the polar cyano and ether groups occur.

A novel poly(p‐phenylene) containing alternating poly(perfluorooctylethyl acrylate‐co‐methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene grafts by combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and Suzuki coupling processes

AbstractA poly(p‐phenylene) (PP), carrying perfectly alternating, well‐defined poly(perfluorooctylethyl acrylate‐co‐methyl methacrylate) [P(FEA‐co‐MMA)] and polystyrene (PS) side chain grafts, was synthesized by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and Suzuki cross‐coupling processes. First, dibromobenzene and diboronic ester functional macromonomers of P(FEA‐co‐MMA) and PS, respectively, were prepared by ATRP. In the second step, PP with lateral alternating P(FEA‐co‐MMA) and PS chains was synthesized by a Suzuki coupling reaction in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 catalyst. The wetting behavior of the polymers was studied by measurements of the static contact angle θ of thin films (200−400 nm thickness) using water and n‐hexadecane as wetting liquids. The obtained fluorinated PP showed high static contact angles with both interrogating liquids, exhibiting simultaneously hydrophobic (θw = 111°) and lipophobic (θh = 67°) properties. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Morphology control of poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate-co-tert-butyl acrylate] by pressure in supercritical carbon dioxide

The morphology control was attained in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) for poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate (POA)-co-tert-butyl acrylate (TBA)] random copolymers with POA/TBA molar ratios of 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, and 4:6. The copolymers showed a different solubility and morphology in scCO2 depending on the POA/TBA ratio. There was a tendency that the copolymers with a lower TBA content, such as 9:1, 8:2, and 7:3, showed a higher solubility in scCO2 and formed a fiber-like structure in the heterogeneous state below their cloud point. On the other hand, the copolymers with the higher TBA contents of 6:4, 5:5, and 4:6 provided micrometer-sized spherical particles. Furthermore, the morphology was controlled by the CO2 pressure because the fiber-like morphology for the copolymer with the 6:4 ratio changed to spherical by decreasing the CO2 pressure.

New poly(dimethylsiloxane)/poly(perfluorooctylethyl acrylate) block copolymers: structure and order across multiple length scales in thin films

Three sets of a new class of low surface tension block copolymers were synthesized consisting of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) block and a poly(perfluorooctylethyl acrylate) (AF8) block. The polymers were prepared using a bromo-terminated PDMS macroinitiator, to which was attached an AF8 block grown using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in such a designed way that the molecular weight and composition of the two polymer blocks were regularly varied. The interplay of both the phase separated microstructure and the mesomorphic character of the fluorinated domains with their effect on surface structure was evaluated using a suite of analytical tools. Surfaces of spin-coated and thermally annealed films were assessed using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) studies. Both atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) studies were carried out to evaluate the microstructure of the thin films. Even in block copolymers in which the PDMS block was the majority component, a significant presence of the lower surface energy AF8 block was detected at the film surface. Moreover, the perfluorooctyl helices of the AF8 repeat units were highly oriented at the surface in an ordered, tilted smectic structure, which was compared with those of the bulk powder samples using wide-angle X-ray powder diffraction (WAXD) studies.

Low Surface Energy Properties of Smectic Fluorinated Block Copolymer/SEBS Blends

A smectic polystyrene–poly(perfluorooctylethyl acrylate) block copolymer was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization and blended with a thermoplastic elastomer SEBS in different compositions. The mesophase structure and transition temperatures were investigated by DSC and WAXD. Thin films of the block copolymer and the blends exhibited large contact angles with both water and n-hexadecane, which resulted in low solid surface tensions. XPS findings at different photoemission angles confirmed the effective surface segregation of the mesogenic chains of the fluorinated polymer block.

Synthesis of poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] and its control of enzyme activity in supercritical carbon dioxide

Poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate], P(POA-co-PEGm) was prepared as a new surfactant for scCO2. The random copolymer was obtained by the radical polymerization of 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate (POA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGm) in DMF. The molar ratio of the POA and PEGm units in the copolymer was POA/PEGm = 0.972/0.028 by 1H NMR. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution were estimated by size exclusion chromatography to be Mn = 133,000 and Mw/Mn = 8.25, respectively. It was suggested that the copolymer formed micellar aggregates with the cores of the PEGm chains in scCO2, based on the analyses of the copolymer in hexafluorobenzene by 1H NMR and dynamic light scattering. The copolymer was soluble in scCO2 and had a cloud point at a much higher pressure than the critical pressure. It was found that the copolymer solubilized CO2-insoluble proteins such as bovine serum albumin and subtilisin Carlsberg in scCO2. The solubility of the copolymer was not influenced by the presence of the proteins; however, the solubility decreased in the presence of a small amount of water along with the protein. The activity of the subtilisin slightly decreased when only placed in scCO2, whereas a marked decrease in the activity was observed for the subtilisin in the presence of the copolymer in scCO2. The subtilisin activity decreased as the CO2 pressure increased.

Convenient synthesis of microspheres by self-assembly of random copolymers in supercritical carbon dioxide

A novel and convenient synthesis of microspheres was attained by molecular self-assembly of random copolymers in supercritical carbon dioxide. Poly{2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate-ran-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate} random copolymers (P[POA-r-DAA]), with 7:3, 8:2, and 9:1 as the molar ratios of 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate (POA)/2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate (DAA), were soluble in supercritical CO2 and had their cloud points at about 75 bar higher than the critical pressure of CO2. The CO2 density at the cloud points decreased with an increase in temperature. Although the copolymers made a slight difference in the cloud point in the absence of perfluoroazelaic acid (PA), they made a marked difference in the presence of PA. The copolymer with a lower DAA content had a cloud point at lower CO2 density. The scanning electron microscopy observation demonstrated that the copolymers produced microspheres in the presence of PA at 0.5 as PA/DAA in the heterogeneous state below the cloud points. The microspheres were unstable to pressure and changed to unspecific forms as a result of increasing the CO2 pressure, although the microspheres were stable to temperature. The POA/DAA ratio in the copolymer had effect not only on the cloud point but also on the size of the microspheres. The copolymer with a lower DAA content formed smaller microspheres.

Application of Fluorinated Alkyl Acrylate to Denture Base Resin Influence of Carbon Chain Length of Fluorinated Alkyl Acrylate on Bacterial Adherence

This study examined the influence of carbon chain length of fluorinated alkyl acrylate on bacterial adhesion to the surface of test specimens. Perfluorobutylethyl acrylate (C4F), perfluorohexylethyl acrylate (C6F), perfluorooctylethyl acrylate (C8F), and perfluorodecylethyl acrylate (C10F) were used as fluorinated alkyl acrylate monomers. All specimens with the fluoro-monomer added exhibited significantly higher water-shedding and oil-shedding surface characteristics when compared to control (MMA/PMMA). Furthermore, contact angle for droplets of water and dodecane on the fluoromonomer-added specimens increased with carbon chain length of the perfluoroalkyl groups. Bacterial adhesion was significantly suppressed on the fluoromonomer-added specimens, both the saliva-uncoated and -coated specimens. In addition, the number of Candida albicans adhering to both the saliva-uncoated and -coated fluoromonomer-added specimens decreased with an increase in perfluoroalkyl carbon chain length. The results suggest that the application of fluorinated alkyl acrylate to denture base resin can modify the surface characteristics, and that fluorinated alkyl acrylate with long carbon chains of C8F and C10F successfully inhibit bacterial adherence to the resin surface.

Influence of Carbon Chain Length of Fluorinated Alkyl Acrylate on Mechanical Properties of Denture Base Resin

Hayashi et al. recently succeeded in preparing a filling polymer composed of methyl methacrylate and perfluorooctylethyl acrylate (C8F). They suggested that the addition of C8F-added polymer beads could inhibit bacterial adherence to the surface of denture base resin. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of carbon chain length of fluorinated alkyl acrylate on mechanical properties of test specimens ; perfluorobutylethyl acrylate (C4F), perfluorohexylethyl acrylate (C6F), C8F and perfluorodecylethyl acrylate (C10F) were used as fluorinated alkyl acrylates. The glass transition temperature of test specimens appeared to be greater as carbon chain length of fluorinated alkyl acrylate increased. Knoop hardness was lowest in C6F-added specimens (C6FA), while all test specimens gave lower values than the control. The direct tensile strengths of fluoromonomer-added specimens were lower than the control, while relatively lower strengths were seen in C6FA or C8F-added specimens (C8FA). Although Knoop hardness and direct tensile strength decreased after addition of fluorinated alkyl acrylates, these mechanical properties remained within the limits recommended by the Japanese Society for Dental Materials and Devices for denture base resin. This study suggests that the new denture base resin is clinically acceptable with regard to mechanical properties.

Synthesis, Characterization and Properties of 2‐(Perfluorooctyl)ethylacrylate Grafted Segmented Polyurethaneureas

AbstractWe report herein that 2‐(perfluorooctyl)ethylacrylate (PFEA) was successfully grafted onto a segmented polyurethaneurea (SPUU). We found that certain PFEA orientated onto the grafted SPUU film surface could significantly improve hemocompatibility. 1,2‐Propanediamine (PD) as a chain extender was used to synthesize the SPUU, which was based on diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), vinyl group‐containing poly(butadiene) diol (PBD), and hydrogenated poly(isoprene) diol (HPIP). PFEA was copolymerized with the SPUU using α,α′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as a radical initiator. Various feed ratios of PFEA grafted polymers were synthesized (SPUU‐F‐0.5, SPUU‐F‐0.75, and SPUU‐F‐1.0) while non‐grafted SPUU was abbreviated as NG‐SPUU. The bulk characteristics of the resulting polymers were investigated by infrared spectroscopy (IR) measurement. Mechanical properties of the typical PFEA grafted SPUU were measured by dynamic viscoelasticity and tensile measurements. We found that PFEA orientated on the surface, as revealed by attenuated total reflectance‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR), electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and water contact angle measurements. The hemocompatibility in vitro was evaluated with rabbit platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) contact tests and viewed by electron probe microanalyzer (EPM) using NG‐SPUU as a reference. We found that fewer platelets adhered to the PFEA grafted surfaces. New polymer SPUU‐F‐0.5 showed the best hemocompatibility in the tested samples. Platelet adhesion to PFEA grafted polymers SPUU‐F‐0.5, SPUU‐F‐0.75, and SPUU‐F‐1.0 was inhibited 91%, 58%, and 50% compared with NG‐SPUU. The relative clotting time of the cast films in contact with cow platelet‐poor plasma (PPP) was 3.26, 2.94, 1.95, 2.39 and 1.00 for SPUU‐F‐0.5, SPUU‐F‐0.75, SPUU‐F‐1.0, NG‐SPUU, and glass, respectively. Application of fluoroalkyl acrylate monomer for a denture base material

The objective of the present study is to make a resin by using fluoroalkyl acrylate monomer for the suppression of the adhesion of microbes to dentures surfaces and plaque formation, since it is thought that fluoroalkyl acrylate monomer might develop a denture base material having low affinity for microbes. Here, we could produce polymer beads by adding perfluorooctylethyl acrylate (C8F) to methyl methacrylate (MMA) in order to modify the surface characteristics of the denture base resin, and then investigated microbial adhesion to test specimens.The water contact angle for C8F-added specimens (C8FA) was higher than that for control specimens (MMA/PMMA), although the surface hardness and tensile strength of the C8FA were slightly lower than those of the control. In addition, the maximum fluorine concentration for the C8FA was at a depth of 0.2 mm. Furthermore, bacterial adhesion to test specimens using Candida albicans was lower for the C8FA, when compared to the control. These findings suggest that the surface characteristics of dentures may be improved by adding a fluoroalkyl acrylate monomer to the filling polymer used in denture base resins.

Latex Blends of Fluorinated and Fluorine-Free Acrylates: Emulsion Polymerization and Tapping Mode Atomic Force Microscopy of Film Formation

Latex based upon fluorinated acrylates such as perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate (FMA) and perfluorooctylethyl acrylate (FA) and fluorine-free acrylates such as n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) was prepared by means of emulsion polymerization in the presence of octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C18TAB) and 2,2‘-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (V50) as water-soluble azo initiator. Reaction calorimetric studies revealed that acetone addition, preferably 15−25 wt %, was the key to achieve high monomer conversion and to produce stable latex with average particle sizes varying between 50 and 300 nm. Monomer conversion was increased, and latex particle size was reduced when 2 wt % n-butyl acrylate (BA) was added together with fluorine-containing monomers. The reaction enthalpy of FMA was determined to be 62 kJ/mol with respect to 75 kJ/mol for the more reactive FA. Stable poly(perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate)/poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PFMA/PBMA) latex blends were formed. According to tapping mode atomic force microscopy, PBMA formed a dense film at 65 °C containing PFMA nanoparticles dispersed in the PBMA matrix. Annealing at 100 °C caused accumulation of PFMA at the surface and formation of a gradient film containing a surface layer with high fluorine content. Such latex blends are of interest in water-, oil-, and soil-repellent coatings.
