This study investigates the link between the perfectionistic self-presentation and smartphone addiction, with a particular focus on the driving motives and behavioural patterns associated with Instagram use. Engaging a sample of 313 individuals , predominantly female (58.5%), aged 18 to 39 (M = 23.67; SD = 4.77), we meticulously examined the factors that might underpin this dynamic. The following scales were used as measures: the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, the Motives for Instagram Use Scale, the Instagram Usage Questionnaire, and the Smartphone Addiction Short Scale. The path analysis results revealed a correlation between the perfectionistic self-presentation and smartphone addiction. It was also confirmed that perfectionistic self-presentation was associated with increased motives for Instagram use, which were further linked to Instagram usage habits, ultimately leading to higher levels of smartphone addiction. All motives were found to be connected to the need for perfectionistic self-presentation, with different motives underpinning active or passive use of social networks and subsequent potential addiction. Interpreted through the lens of the Perfectionistic Social Exclusion Model and the Uses and Gratifications Theory, our results offer richer understanding of how social media can fulfil perfectionistic tendencies and contribute to addictive behaviours. The study emphasizes the need for a multidimensional approach to examining the social media's psychological impact, proposing a bridge between individual predispositions and broader social phenomena. These insights not only contribute to academic discourse, but also have implications for mental health practitioners and policy makers concerned with the growing intersection of social media use and psychological well-being.

The psychometrics of the Persian version of the perfectionistic self-presentation scale-junior form.

The perfectionistic self-presentation scale (PSPS)-junior form is a self-report questionnaire used to measure perfectionistic self-presentation in children and adolescents. It consists of 18 items and 3 subscales, including perfectionistic self-promotion, non-display of imperfection, and nondisclosure of imperfection. The present study aimed to determine the psychometrics of the Persian version of the PSPS. A descriptive study was conducted on 345 samples (269 girls) who responded to the questionnaire. The findings confirmed the internal consistency and composite reliability (CR) of this scale (CR=0.744). Further, the Persian PSPS has acceptable face and content validities. Construct and convergent validities were also measured and confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. The correlational analysis of the research variables showed that the PSPS is positively correlated with the Child-Adolescent Perfectionism Scale (0.566) and the children's and adolescents' dysfunctional attitudes scale (0.420). Overall, the results indicated that the Persian version of the PSPS has acceptable psychometrics and can yield accurate results in Iranian samples.

The Role of Perfectionistic Self-Presentation and Problematic Instagram Use in the Relationship Between Self-Concept Clarity and Body Disconnection: A Serial Mediation Model.

By combining authors who hypothesized that modern technology has greatly increased people's ability and people's possibility to distance themselves from their embodied awareness and those who have shown that communication through social media is more congenial to people with a tendency towards perfectionistic self-presentation (PSP), this study analyses the influence of self-concept clarity (SCC) in bodily dissociation (BD) and hypothesizes that people with a low SCC are more prone to BD and that PSP and problematic Instagram use (PIU) may play a serial mediating role in this relationship. Two hundred and 19 women (Mage = 31.8 ± 11.25) completed an online survey that included the Italian-validated versions of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, the Scale of Body Connection and the Bergen Facebook Scale modified for Instagram use. A Serial Mediation Model (Hayes's PROCESS Model 6) shows that both PSP and PIU significantly serially mediate the association between SCC and BD (β = -.025 SE = .011, 95% CI = [-.0498, -.0070]) and that there is a mediating effect of PIU between SCC and BD (β = -.04 SE = .020, 95% CI = [-.0865, -.0098]), but no mediating effect of PSP between SCC and BD was found (β = -.052 SE = .031, 95% CI = [-.1184, +.0039]). A possible explanation is that people with low SCC try to avoid others noticing their imperfections because they fail to integrate it into their self-concept and tend to use Instagram in a problematic way because this tool allows them to largely control the information they share. This use, in turn, alters their state of mind-body connection and this increases the disconnection from one's bodily sensations. The absence of mediation by the PSP between SCC and BD and the presence of PIU mediation between SCC and BD underlines the importance of technology in this relationship. The implications and limitations of this study will be discussed.

A longitudinal study of perfectionism and orthorexia in exercisers

Research suggests that trait perfectionism and perfectionistic self-presentation are related to orthorexia – a pathological obsession with correct nutrition. However, no studies have examined these relationships over time or compared the influence of the two aspects of perfectionism on orthorexia. In the present study we sought to address these two issues. Gym members who engaged in high degrees of exercise were recruited via social media platforms. They completed an online questionnaire that included the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale-Short Form, Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, and the Eating Habits Questionnaire on two occasions: 177 participants (Mean age = 31.6 years) initially completed the questionnaire and 82 completed the questionnaire six weeks later. A series of multiple regression analyses revealed that (i) trait perfectionism predicted an increase in orthorexia symptomatology over time with socially prescribed perfectionism and other-oriented perfectionism unique predictors of orthorexia, (ii) perfectionistic self-presentation predicted orthorexia over time with nondisplay of imperfection a unique predictor of orthorexia, and (iii) when considered alongside each other, only trait dimensions of perfectionism were unique predictors of orthorexia. The present study provides further evidence that perfectionism is related to orthorexia. In addition, the study also provides preliminary evidence that more engrained trait aspects of perfectionism are more predictive of orthorexia over time than the self-presentational aspects of perfectionism.

Perfectionistic Self-Presentation and Body Dissatisfaction: The Role of Anxiety and Depression

This purpose of the study was to investigate the role of perfectionistic self-presentation aspect of perfectionism with the desire to present a perfect self, which may have a significant impact on emotional and social well-being. The present research assessed the experience of anxiety, depression and body dissatisfaction among university students (N =1000) including males (n = 500) and females (n = 500) enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program. Perfectionistic Self-presentation Scale (Hewitt et al., 2003), Body Dissatisfaction Scale (Tariq & Ijaz, 2015), Beck Depression Inventory (Beck et al., 1996) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (Beck et al., 1988) were used to assess the study variables. Results indicated that perfectionistic self-presentation was significantly correlated with anxiety, depression and body dissatisfaction in female participants whereas, there was significant correlation between perfectionistic self-presentation and anxiety in male participants. Moreover, two mediation models were tested to see the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and body dissatisfaction using anxiety and depression as mediators. Using regression analysis, results suggested that there was a significant change in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and body dissatisfaction after adding the mediators i.e., anxiety and depression. The study provided evidence that individuals who display high perfectionistic-self presentation are particularly vulnerable to anxiety, depression and body dissatisfaction. The results have been discussed in the light of previous findings.

Applying the Self-Determination Theory to explain the link between perceived parental overprotection and perfectionism dimensions

Previous research offers evidence that parental overprotection explains – at least in part – the development of certain individual differences relevant to psychological maladjustment, including perfectionism. The current study aims to build upon this evidence by adopting the Self-Determination Theory as a theoretical framework for understanding the psychological processes that might explain the effect of parental overprotection (PO) on different features of perfectionism. Three-hundred and nineteen Italian participants (F = 73.7 %; Mage = 31.51 ± 13.04 years) were recruited and administered the Italian versions of the Parental Bonding Instrument, the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, the Big Three Perfectionism Scale, the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, and the Perfectionism Cognition Inventory. Structural equation modeling supported the hypothesized mediating effect of needs frustration in the above-mentioned links, especially when it comes to trait perfectionism and perfectionistic cognitions. Competence frustration played the most relevant role in explaining how parental overprotection might contribute to perfectionism dimensions. The current study provides evidence of a potential critical developmental pathway to perfectionism, with implications for clinical practice.

Perfectionism and stereotype in plastic surgery

Participants’ perceptions of media messages about appearance issues have been assessed using 30 items of the Sociocultural Attitudes toward Appearance Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3). Sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, physical appearance perfectionism were considered as predictors of tendency toward plastic surgery.ResultsThe results showed that there is significant positive association between perfectionism, the influence of mass media and increased women’ s likelihood of undergoing plastic surgery.ConclusionsOur findings suggest firstly that a greater perfectionist tendency and psychological investment in physical appearance predict more favorable attitudes toward plastic surgery. Perfectionists women may choose plastic surgery as part of their need of bodily perfection. Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale in Ecuador: psychometric properties and latent mean differences across genders

Introduction: This paper aims to examine the psychometric properties, i.e., validity, reliability, factorial invariance, and latent mean differences based on gender, of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, PSPS, in the Ecuadorian context. Method: A sample consisting of 597 Ecuadorian undergraduates participated in the study. Results: Confirmatory Factor Analysis supported a 14-item and three-dimensional model of the scale: Perfectionistic Self-Promotion, Nondisplay of Imperfection, and Nondisclosure of Imperfection. This model presented configural; measurement, i.e., metric, strong, and strict; as well as structural invariance across genders. Discriminant validity was observed by analysing correlations between PSPS factors and perfectionism traits. Males exhibited higher latent means of Perfectionistic Self-Promotion and also Nondisplay of Imperfection than females. Conclusions: The Spanish-translated and brief version of the PSPS represents a reliable and valid tool for assessing perfectionistic self-presentation in Ecuador.

Perfectionistic self-presentation and orthorexia in exercisers.

The present study aimed to provide the first examination of whether perfectionistic self-presentation-an interpersonal expression of perfectionism-is related to orthorexia. We recruited a sample of 150 exercisers (Mean age = 27.7years). Participants completed the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale and the ORTO-15 on a single occasion. Two dimensions of perfectionistic self-presentation-perfectionistic self-promotion and nondisplay of imperfection-showed significant positive correlations with orthorexia. In addition, in multiple regression analyses controlling for the overlap between dimensions, perfectionistic self-promotion emerged as the strongest and only significant predictor of orthorexia. Perfectionistic self-presentation is positively associated with orthorexia in exercisers. Perfectionistic self-promotion-a need to portray an image of perfection to others-is primarily responsible for this relationship. Cross-sectional study, Level V.

Perfectionistic traits and self-presentation are associated with negative attitudes and concerns about seeking professional psychological help.

Numerous factors influence whether an individual is able and willing to seek professional help for psychological difficulties. One of these may be perfectionism, a multidimensional personality construct that has been linked to poor psychological adjustment. The current study investigated whether perfectionism traits and self-presentational facets were associated with negative help-seeking attitudes and concerns about psychotherapy. Samples of university (N = 299) and community (N = 77) men and women completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Help Scale, and Thoughts About Psychotherapy Survey. Various components of perfectionism were associated with both negative help-seeking attitudes and concerns about psychotherapy. The findings suggest that perfectionistic behaviour may be an important dispositional factor that interferes with seeking and obtaining help for psychological difficulties. Theoretical and clinical implications are discussed.

In this research, it is aimed to review the relationship between altruism and perfectionism mentality among university students. The research has been conducted among 250 girls, 250 boys, in total 500 university students who have studied in different public and private universities in Istanbul. The data related to the attendant’s altruism levels are obtained by using Altruism Scale, their perfectionism levels were determined by using the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale and data related to personal characteristics was obtained by using Personal Information Form that was issued by the researcher. In regression analysis, points, that are taken from the sub-dimension of the altruism levels among the university students are obtained as dependent variable (attendance to voluntary activities, financial supports, help in the traumatic situations, help for old patient people, help based on physical force, help during the education period, help arisen from feeling closeness), points that are taken from the sub-dimension(perfectionist self-presentation, nondisplay of imperfection and nondisclosure of imperfection ) of the perfectionistic self-presentation are obtained as a predictor variable. One way variance analysis and T-test analyses were made to review altruism mentality among the university students whether it becomes different or not according to gender, age, the average income of the family, people of which living together with, family-style that she/he has grown up. According to the research results, it has been determined that there are significant relationships between an altruism act and perfectionism among university students. Also, it has been determined that a woman has been acting more altruist than a man, juniority university students have been acting less altruist than the older ones.

What Lies Beyond the Superordinate Trait Perfectionism Factors? The Perfectionistic Self-Presentation and Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory Versus the Big Three Perfectionism Scale in Predicting Depression and Social Anxiety

Extreme perfectionism has been linked with distress and dysfunction. This association is reflected by the recent development of the Big Three Perfectionism Scale (BTPS), which has superordinate trait-based scales that assess 3 broad elements—rigid, self-critical, and narcissistic perfectionism. We examined psychometric features of the BTPS as well as the links between the BTPS and indexes of distress. A sample of 602 undergraduates completed the BTPS, the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, the Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory, and measures of social anxiety and depression. Support was obtained for the psychometric qualities of the BTPS. All 3 superordinate trait factors were associated with social anxiety and depression. Analyses also established that rigid perfectionism, self-critical perfectionism, and narcissistic perfectionism are associated with perfectionistic cognitions and perfectionistic self-presentation. In addition, the results of a series of regression analyses established that perfectionistic self-presentation and perfectionistic cognitions accounted for significant unique variance in distress beyond the variance attributable to rigid, narcissistic, and self-critical perfectionism. Overall, our results suggest that the BTPS has significant promise as a predictor of various forms of dysfunction, but the cognitive and self-presentational aspects of the perfectionism construct are also uniquely relevant and not redundant with the BTPS superordinate trait factors

Autopresentación perfeccionista durante la infancia y su asociación con ansiedad escolar

La Autopresentación Perfeccionista (APP), conocida como el deseo de proyectar una imagen perfecta hacia los demás con características protectoras de su exhibición social y con la necesidad reiterativa de divulgarse excelente, es uno de los factores más influyentes en cuanto a psicopatologías derivadas y menos estudiado en el contexto educativo. El objetivo de este estudio consistió en examinar la relación entre la APP y la Ansiedad Escolar en una muestra compuesta por 860 participantes con edades comprendidas entre 8 y 12 años (M = 9.86; DE = 1.26), matriculados en centros públicos y privados de la provincia de Alicante. Se empleó la Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale Junior Form (PSPS-Jr) y el Inventario de Ansiedad escolar para Educación Primaria (IAEP). Los análisis estadísticos revelaron una positiva y significativa asociación entre la APP y la Ansiedad Escolar en todos sus factores y el total de sus escalas, con una elevada correlación entre la No-Divulgación de la Imperfección y la Ansiedad ante el Castigo Escolar. Atendiendo a estas consideraciones, este estudio evidencia características específicas que determinan el diseño de un posible tratamiento para disminuir rasgos desadaptativos de la personalidad en población infanto-juvenil.

The relationship between perfectionism and mental illness stigma

Despite experiencing higher levels of psychological distress, individuals with high levels of perfectionism are more reluctant to seek treatment for psychological issues and they are often treatment resistant when in treatment. Mental illness stigma has been shown to be a significant barrier to treatment seeking in other populations and it stands to reason that it may play a key role for individuals with high levels of perfectionism as well. As such, the primary goal of this study was to discern whether individuals who differ along the continuum of various types of perfectionism also differ in terms of mental illness beliefs in ways that suggest awareness of and concern about being stigmatized. In addition, we examined links between perfectionism and attitudes towards seeking help and self-stigma for seeking help. A sample of 140 university students completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale and separate measures of mental illness beliefs, help-seeking attitudes, and self-stigma for seeking help. Analyses found that perfectionistic self-presentation was associated with unfavorable mental illness attitudes overall. Our results suggest that targeted interventions to reduce mental illness stigma should be tailored to address the beliefs and concerns of perfectionistic people who are vulnerable to distress.

The goal of the study was to supplement the previously described adaptation of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale by P. Hewitt with clinical materials. In addition to the population sample (747 participants; 324 men and 423 women with a mean age of 28.42 ± 10.44 years), clinical patients with depressive and anxiety disorders (35 participants; 20 men and 15 women with a mean age of 27.45 ± 7.22 years) took part in this study. All participants also completed the Russian-language version of the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale by P. Hewitt and G. Flett adapted by I.I. Gracheva. The three-factor structure of the scale was confirmed by means of confirmatory factor analysis; its subscales demonstrated means of internal consistency, retest reliability and convergent validity similar to the original scale. It was shown that in a sample of clinical patients there are stronger correlations between perfectionism and perfectionistic self-presentation than in a sample of conditionally healthy participants. In conclusion, it is inferred that the adapted Russian-language version of the scale can be potentially effective in clinical psychology and psychiatry.

The Need to Present a Perfect Body Image: Development of a New Measure of Perfectionistic Self-Presentation

Perfectionistic self-presentation is linked to different clinical conditions and specially to eating disorders. In fact, the role that the drive to reach “perfection” and display it to others plays on eating and body image-related symptoms has long been the target of theoretical and empirical interest. However, an instrument that specifically assessed the need to present a perfect body image to others did not exist. The current study presents the development and validation of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale – Body Image (PSPS-BI), a measure designed to assess the need to present a perfect body image to others by displaying a flawless physical appearance and by occulting perceived imperfections in a public context. Three studies that included a total of 364 males and 541 females with ages between 18 to 38 years, were used to examine the structure and psychometric properties of the scale. Results showed that PSPS-BI presents two factors that measure the concealment of body imperfections and the display of body perfection. PSPS-BI revealed good internal reliability and temporal stability. Also, the PSPS-BI revealed good concurrent validity, tested with measures of perfectionism, body image flexibility, and general and eating psychopathology. Furthermore, a mediational analysis indicated that the need to present a perfect body image to others fully mediates the relationship between a general measure of perfectionistic self-presentation and drive for thinness, in both men and women. PSPS-BI showed good preliminary evidence as a reliable and accurate measure that seems to offer new possibilities to the research field of body image and eating-related difficulties.
