Diversity and diversification of Eumolpinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in New Caledonia

This study was possible thanks to funds provided by the Committee for Research and Exploration of the National Geographic Society (grant no. 8380-07), and a travel grant from the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund of the Linnean Society. The work benefited also from the support of the Juan de la Cierva Programme (Spanish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) to the first author, and the Fundacion BBVA to the other authors. The Spanish National Institute for Bioinformatics and the IBE's IT team helped in the set-up for parallelization of processes. Fieldwork was carried out under the special authorization n° 6024-626 2008/DENV/SMT from the Direction de l'Environment (Noumea, New Caledonia) to our host in New Caledonia.

Excavations at Gorham's Cave, Gibraltar

Gorham's Cave is one of a group of seven which lie at the base of the cliffs on the east side of Gibraltar, below Europa Advance Road, which is about two hundred feet above them. There is now a beach in front of the five southern caves but this has only been in existence for a few years, and arose from the depositing of tunnel spoil over the cliff edge. Four of the caves are named, starting from the south end of the beach, Bennett's, Gorham's, Vanguard and Boathoist; the remaining three have local names which change from time to time. The beach, which is now called Anderson Beach, will probably disappear in a few years and the sea will again reach the base of the cliffs.The cave is named after Major A. Gorham who explored a fissure at the back of the main cave in 1907, and for convenience both have been called by his name. The finding of an archaeological deposit was due originally to two members of R.E.M.E., when temporary access had been made to the beach from the cliffs above, and excavations were carried out in the upper level by Captain G. B. Alexander, R.E., and Lieut. Monke, R.E.In 1948 the Governor of Gibraltar asked that full scale excavations should be carried out and two seasons' work have now been devoted to the cave under his patronage and with the help of funds supplied by the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund.

A Palæolithic Industry from the Cromer District

INVESTIGATIONS by us during the last four years, supported by grants from the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund, have shown that a hitherto unrecognized flint industry occurs in the coast section at Corton, near Lowestoft, and in the neighbourhood of Cromer.

Excavations in a Dry Valley in Beer, S.E. Devon

The object of this paper is to make known the existence of a wide-spread implementiferous deposit hitherto unknown in Devonshire, although comparable discoveries have been made in East Anglia by Mr. Reid Moir and in the Thames Valley by Mr. J. P. T. Burchell.A brief preliminary statement appeared in Vol. VII, part 2, in “Notes on Excavations,” which reported our finding a number of flint implements which lay to a depth of 12 ft. below the surface of a dry valley in Bovey Lane, Beer.These specimens were revealed in an artificial cutting made in search of water, when only the faces of the sections could be examined, but by aid of a grant from the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund, we were later enabled to carry out two seasons of excavation.

Report on an Early Bronze Age Site in the South-Eastern Fens

Plantation Farm, Shippea Hill, is situated in the south-east corner of the Fenland, some seven miles ENE. of Ely. The vast Fenland plain, formed essentially by the filling-up of a corrugated basin of Jurassic and boulder clays with post-glacial peats, silts, and clays, provides a field for the study of post-glacial changes of environment in relation to man without equal in Britain. As reported in a recent number of the Antiquaries Journal, a Research Committee has been formed at Cambridge under the presidency of Dr. Seward, F.R.S., to organize research in this work and to secure adequate co-operation of specialists in the different sciences. Notwithstanding great advances in the technical equipment of research, remarkably little has been added to our knowledge in this field since the publication of Skertchley's Geology of the Fenland in 1877. We have had, therefore, to begin at the beginning, and this report, which establishes the stratigraphical context of the Early Bronze Age in the deposits of the south-eastern fens, represents one of the first-fruits of our activities. Sir Charles Hiam very kindly allowed us to work on his land, and the Trustees of the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund generously made the excavations and borings possible. We may also take the opportunity here of thanking Mr. Charles Leaf for his part in the initial discovery of the site.

Implements from the Raised Beach at Slindon Park, Sussex

In a previous paper the swamps of the Paraguayan Chaco have been shown to be an environment in which the fauna is exposed to great lack of dissolved oxygen. The adaptations by which the rich fauna of fishes in these swamps maintains its life under these conditions are discussed in this paper. There are two accessory sources from which these fishes can obtain oxygen. These are:— The air above the water. The thin, well oxygenated, surface layer of the water. Eight of twenty species collected in these swamps are adapted to breathe air and the rest all make use of the second of these sources. The eight air-breathing species belong to seven genera and have six independent types of aerial respiration. The adaptations of two of these (Lepidosiren and Symbranchus) are not further discussed. In the other genera the organs of aerial respiration are:— Erythrinus Air-bladder. Hypopomus Gill-lamelæ. Callichthys and Hoplosternum Intestine. Ancistrus Stomach.

Flint Implements of Upper Palaeolithic types from Glacial Deposits in Norfolk

In the following paper a preliminary account is given of some archaeological research which is being carried out, under a grant from the Percy Sladen MemorialFund, in the Hunstanton district of north-west Norfolk.

SUMMARY. 1 A general description of the Paraguayan Chaco and its swamps is given. These swamps belong to the type of tropical waters which have an abundant food-supply and a comparatively poor fauna and flora of truly aquatic forms. 2 An investigation of the waters of these swamps was carried out with the object of determining the relative importance of various conditions of the environment to the life of the aquatic fauna. 3 The conditions chosen for investigation were: 1 Temperature. 2 Hydrogen-ion-concentration. 3 Alkali-reserve. 4 Carbon dioxide-content. 5 Oxygen-content. 6 Phosphate-content. 7 Penetration of ultra-violet light. 4 In the hot weather the distribution of the fauna was chiefly controlled by the oxygen-content of the water. This was very low in the water of the swamp. 5 The variations of the other conditions, except occasionally of the ultra-violet light and the temperature, are not of great importance to the fauna. 6 In the production of this low oxygen-content at least the following conditions co-operate:— 1 Temperate changes at night did not cause mixing of the layers of the water. This was a result of the hot climate. 2 The water is protected from disturbance by the presence of much vegetation above it. 3 The opacity of the water, and probably other causes, prevented the growth of a large phytoplankton. 4 There is a large amount of bacterial decay in and above the mud at the bottom of the water. 7 Daring the hot weather the changes which followed rain were the most important to the fauna of those produced by conditious external to the water. This is usual in tropical waters. It was not possible to carry the investigation through the cooler weather. 8 In certain rain-water pools, which were investigated for comparison with the swamps, a more abundant phytoplankton and more oxygen in the water were associated with much more animal life. 9 It is suggested that similar conditions will he found to occur in other tropical waters which resemble those of these swamps in the following respects:— 1 A small phytoplankton either on account of the opacity of the water or its unsuitable chemical composition. 2 The absence of disturbance. 3 The presence of much aerial plant-life in and around the water. Most tropical swamps and the shallower and quieter parts of many large rivers and lakes probably belong to this category. Further evidence of the importance of the supply of oxygen to the fauna of these swamps will be given in later papers in a description of its adaptations to meet this need.

Stone Age Man in Kenya Colony

IN September 1926 I sailed from England accompanied by Mr. B. H. Newsam to investigate certain prehistoric sites which I had known of for some years in Kenya Colony? My expedition received financial aid from the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund and the Government Grant Committee of the Royal Society, the assistance of which is gratefully acknowledged. Stone tools of many types had been collected by myself and many others from the surface in Kenya Colony and the other East African territories for a good many years, and it was hoped that the work of the expedition this year would bring to light sites containing stone tools associated with human remains.

Natural History of the New Hebrides

IN a few months my brother and I are going to the New Hebrides, in the Pacific Ocean, to explore the interior of the largest island, to collect the fauna, to study animal reproduction in a climate that is almost constant throughout the year, and to undertake other work of a more special nature. Particular interest attaches to a large lake on one of the islands, said to be almost the only lake in Melanesia. We are financed in part by the Trustees of the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund.
