Nurses' Personality Traits and Perceived Work Environments During Public Health Emergencies: Implications for Nursing Workforce Planning.

The nursing workforce faces substantial challenges, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 era. Developing an effective strategy for workforce maintenance and the strategic deployment of nurses is crucial. This study aimed to explore and categorize nurses' personality traits, with a focus on analyzing differences in their perceptions of the nursing work environment. Between January 2023 and February 2023, a multi-center cross-sectional study was carried out involving nurses from 12 tertiary hospitals actively engaged in frontline COVID-19 response duties. Through cluster sampling, surveys were distributed among eligible nursing staff, comprising a general information questionnaire, the Chinese Big Five Personality Questionnaire-Short Form, subjective evaluations of emergency nursing management, and the Chinese Nursing Work Environment Scale for Public Health Emergencies. Various statistical analyses, such as descriptive analysis, cluster analysis, non-parametric tests, and general linear model analysis, were employed to investigate the correlation between personality types and the perception of nursing work environments. The analysis encompassed 1059 valid questionnaires, reflecting the experiences of frontline nurses. The majority of these nurses possessed 1-5 years of experience, held junior professional titles, volunteered for their roles, and served as attending nurses. Categorization based on personality traits revealed three groups: resilient (35.60%), ordinary (16.15%), and distressed (48.25%) types. Significantly distinct perceptions of nursing work environments emerged among these categories, with resilient and ordinary types expressing notably higher satisfaction compared to the distressed group (H value = 256.487, p < 0.001). This study illustrates the connection between nurses' perceived working environment and their personality traits. Nursing managers should factor in nurses' personality traits when choosing and deploying frontline responders during public health emergencies. Prioritizing resilient-type nurses and crafting a supportive work environment that aligns with nurses' characteristics is indispensable for an effective emergency response.

The development and pilot of a novel mobile application to assess clinician perception of workload and work environment.

Traditional measures of workload such as wRVUs may not be adequate to understand the impact of workload on key outcomes. The objective of this study was to develop a mobile application to assess, in near real time, clinicians' perception of workload and work environment. We developed the GrittyWork™ application (GW App) using the Chokshi and Mann process model for user-centered digital development. Study occured at a single academic medical center with hospitalist clinicians. Measures included the System Usability Scale (SUS), use measures from GW App, electronic health record (EHR) event log data and note counts, and qualitative interviews. From October 28, 2022 to November 3, 2022, six hospitalist clinicians provided feedback on the early prototype of the GW App, and from February 28, 2023 to June 8, 2023, 30 hospitalist clinicians participated in the pilot while on clinical service. All 30 clinicians (100%) participated in the pilot submitting data for a total of 122 shifts. Participants reported working 10 ± 1 h per day (mean ± SD) and were responsible for an average of 11 ± 3 patients per day. The postpilot evaluation of the GW App showed a SUS score of 86 ± 11 and a participant preference toward mobile application-based surveys (73% of participants). Regarding workload measures, EHR event log data and notes data correlated with physician-reported workloads. Applying user-centered design techniques, we successfully developed a mobile application with high usability. These data can be paired with EHR event log data and outcomes to provide insights into the impact of workloads and work environments on outcomes.

Female Police Officers’ Cultural Perceptions of the External Work Environment

Many scholars have detailed the exclusion of female police officers from the traditional masculine occupational culture that endorses a detached suspicion of the public as a result of the inherent dangers of the street. Relatively few studies have directly examined how female officers perceive or respond to facets of this external (community) working environment. The present study uses survey data from officers in a large, urban police department to test for gender differences in two aspects of the external environment that are core to police cultural attitudes: perceptions of danger and suspiciousness toward civilians. Findings show that female officers perceive more danger and are more suspicious of civilians than their male colleagues do, though the differences are modest in magnitude. Implications for research and policy are discussed.

Measuring the Nursing Work Environment during Public Health Emergencies: Scale Adaptation and Validation

Aim. To develop a scale for measuring nurse’s perceived work environment during the public health emergencies (PHEs) and assess its reliability and validity. Background. Although there is extensive research on instruments for measuring nursing work environments in regular healthcare settings, there is a lack of specific scales tailored to address the unique work conditions experienced by nurses during PHEs. Design. This study employed a cross-sectional design for psychometric evaluation and adhered to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement. Methods. A self-report scale, the Chinese Nursing Work Environment Scale for Public Health Emergencies (C-NWE-PHE), was developed, integrating situational characteristics. Data on demographics, adapted scale scores, and subjective evaluations of nursing management performance were collected from 1156 nurses through online surveys conducted between January 2023 and March 2023. Confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson correlations, and Cronbach’s alpha analyses were conducted to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale. Results. The adapted C-NWE-PHE scale comprised 28 items organized into five subscales: Workforce and Deployment Support, Leadership and Emergency Management, Autonomy and Empowerment, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Logistics and Humanistic Care. Structural equation modelling showed satisfactory factor loadings for each subscale and a good model fit, confirming construct validity. The content validity and reliability of the total scale were confirmed. Conclusion. This study provides empirical evidence for understanding and assessing the nursing work environment during PHEs with a psychometrically sound scale. Implications for Nursing Management. The C-NWE-PHE scale, along with its five identified constructs, provides a nuanced comprehension of working conditions amid PHEs. Implementing this scale could foster specific enhancements, support nurse retention efforts, and enhance the effectiveness of responses during challenging emergency situations.

Mental health in China: exploring the impacts of built environment, work environment, and subjective perception.

The shifting living and working conditions have profound impacts on the residents' mental health. However, current research in this field has not remarkable investigated. This study used the China Labor-force Dynamic Survey (CLDS) dataset from 2018 and relied on a regression model to examine the effects of the built environment, work environment, and subjective perception on the mental health of Chinese citizens. It also considers the circumstances of both migrants and local residents. This study revealed significant correlations between mental health and greening space rate, road network density, commuting time, work feelings, community trust, economic satisfaction, and other factors. Additionally, the mental health of local residents was shown to be significantly affected by community security, while it shows no significance in migrants. Furthermore, a significant spatial autocorrelation was found in terms of mental health within the central and eastern regions of China. The findings of this study offer valuable insights that can be used to facilitate measures aimed at improving the mental health of residents and promoting the development of healthy cities.

Quality of Work Life and Job Satisfaction among Journalists of Television Newsrooms in Kathmandu

This descriptive research study is conducted among journalists in television newsrooms in Kathmandu identifies that safe working conditions, adequate health benefits, and equitable compensation are critical factors in enhancing job satisfaction among journalists. Job autonomy, opportunities for professional development, social responsibility, and positive image are also significant in fostering employee satisfaction which is in line with past literature on workplace safety, employee satisfaction, and perception of work environment among journalists. The study's results suggest that companies should create a positive work atmosphere by compensating employees fairly, providing opportunities for professional growth, and fostering a culture of social responsibility and positive image.

PERCEIVED WORK ENVIRONMENT AND OUTCOMES AMONG CARE STAFF IN LONG-TERM CARE SETTINGS DURING COVID-19

Abstract Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has severely affected residents in long-term care (LTC) facilities. However, how care staff in LTC facilities perceive their work environment during the pandemic and its potential impact on their work outcome are less understood. This study examined the associations between perceived work environment, staffing levels, and educational status of care staff and their general and COVID-19 specific work outcomes during the pandemic in LTC facilities. The study employed a cross-sectional, observational, correlational design. A total of 207 care staff were conveniently recruited from 30 LTC facilities in South Korea. The perceived work environment, staffing levels, educational status of care staff, and their work outcomes were collected using questionnaires. Multivariable binary logistic regressions were conducted, controlling for the characteristics of care staff and facilities included. Approximately 45% of the participants were either nurse aids or care workers, and 38% were registered nurses. Nearly half reported that their work environment was poor. Care staff who perceived their work environment to be poor were more likely to be dissatisfied with their work (odds ratio [OR] 15.40), experience high burnout (OR6.93), intend to leave the facility within a year (OR7.83), and experience increased overtime work due to COVID-19 (OR4.03). They were also less likely to perceive an immediate response to COVID-19 from their facility (OR0.45). The LTC work environment should be improved from its current state and government-led initiatives for infection control should be implemented to enable a better response to future public health crises in LTC settings.

Pengaruh Persepsi Mahasiswa Mengenai Lingkungan Kerja Auditor Dan Faktor Sosial Budaya Terhadap Pilihan Karirnya Sebagai Auditor

This study aims to determine how students' perceptions of the auditor's work environment and socio-cultural factors affect their decision to become auditors in the future. This study covers all undergraduate accounting students at the Faculty of Economics, Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University Yogyakarta who are taking auditing courses. A sample of 111 respondents was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The results of data testing show that the decision to become an auditor is influenced by the work environment. On the other hand, socio-cultural factors do not affect the decision to become an auditor.

Association Between Vocal Symptoms, Communication, Work Environment, and Sense of Coherence in Hospital Health Professionals

This study aimed to associate the presence of vocal symptoms with sociodemographic and occupational data, work environment self-perception, oral communication wearing a face mask, and the sense of coherence (SOC). This cross-sectional analytical observational study included 66 health professionals from a Brazilian hospital. They answered an online questionnaire on sociodemographic aspects, self-perception of the physical work environment, and oral communication at work. The Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) and Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-13) were also applied. The significance level was set at 5% for the statistical analysis. The self-perception of vocal symptoms was 62%. Professionals who considered the noise in their work environment unsatisfactory had more vocal symptoms (P=0.005), especially in the limitation (P=0.013) and physical (P=0.028) domains of the VoiSS. Professionals with higher self-perceived vocal symptoms also reported incoordination between breathing, speech, and articulation (P=0.041) and self-perceived difficulty being heard with a protective mask (P=0.033). Professionals with a higher self-perceived score in the limitation domain of the VoiSS also had a higher self-perceived effort to speak with a mask (P=0.035) and a higher self-perception that other people find it difficult to hear them with a face mask (P=0.050). There was a weak negative correlation between VoiSS and SOC (P<0.05) and between its domains (P<0.05). Self-perception of voice symptoms is high among health professionals in a Brazilian public hospital. The presence of these symptoms is related to the perception of a noisy work environment and communication difficulties due to the use of a face mask. The lower the ability to cope with stressful situations, the larger the presence of voice symptoms among health professionals.

Weather protection at the construction site: work environment and conditions for moisture and mould growth on massive timber

During the last decade, the use of timber (especially massive timber) has increased worldwide, mainly driven by anticipated environmental benefits. However, there is debate on how to handle the susceptibility against microbial growth for wooden constructions, especially during the construction phase. Sometimes full weather protection is used to avoid exposing the wooden material to outdoor conditions, but oftentimes the structures are fully exposed to precipitation. In an earlier study, one construction site using a full weather protection was studied, and the results showed promising results on the improved hygrothermal conditions and reduced risk of mould growth. Moreover, the site contractor also indicated improved work environment and productivity, however, this was not included in that study. This present study aims to investigate the effects of using full weather protection during construction in seven different construction projects to follow-up and broaden the earlier single project study. The studied aspects include the hygrothermal conditions, potential of mould growth, and influence on the work environment.Temperature and relative humidity were measured and analysed. Samples of cross-laminated timber (CLT) were analysed using a microscope, and the results are compared to theoretical mould growth potential. This is measured both inside the weather protection and outside at the seven construction projects. Furthermore, a work environment questionnaire is distributed to workers at the sites to collect the perceived work environment using a full weather protection.The results of the study partly confirm the conclusions from the earlier study, i.e., reducing the risk of mould growth and causing a slightly warmer and dryer conditions than outside. In addition, the results indicate an improved work environment. The majority of the interviewees wishes a weather protection in their next project regarding the work environment.

Work-related Alcohol Use

Abstract Drinking alcohol with co-workers is a common practice in many countries. However, because consumption of alcohol is socially unaccepted in several religious groups, the use of alcohol in an occupational context may be discriminatory and have negative side-effects. In annual surveys of part- and fulltime employees in Norway conducted between 2015 and 2022, we found that employees affiliated with religious minorities more often experienced social exclusion due to work-related alcohol use than non-religious employees and the religious majority. Experiencing alcohol-related social exclusion was related to more negative perceptions of the social work environment and more absence from work. Restrictive alcohol practices and policies at the workplace were associated with less social exclusion and appeared to be protective for religious minorities, without impairing the social work environment of other employees. Social exclusion of religious minorities can be reduced if employers limit or avoid serving alcohol to employees.

Evaluating the Health of the Work Environment and the Perception of New Nurses During the Transition to Practice in Critical Care.

New nurses are the major source of hiring for most hospitals. They fill vacancies left by seasoned nurses creating an experience-complexity gap. Turnover among new-graduate nurses is as high as 85% in the first 2 years. The purpose of this study was to provide a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to turnover. The specific aims were (1) to better understand novice nurses' perceptions of their transition to critical-care practice and (2) to describe all eligible critical-care nurses' perceptions of a healthy work environment. A quantitative descriptive design was used. Data were collected over 3 weeks in February 2022 from novice nurses (n = 12) who completed the Casey-Fink Nurse Experience Survey and from novice and experienced nurses (n = 47) who completed the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses' Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Respondents to the Casey-Fink Nurse Experience Survey (n = 12) indicated feeling well supported by family, friends, and preceptors, although they felt less positive about prioritizing care, organizing patient needs, and recommending changes to the plan of care. The overall mean score on the Health Work Environment Assessment Tool was 2.99 (n = 47), indicating the need for improvement. Responses varied by unit, years of experience, and certification status. This study contributes to the evolving body of nursing knowledge and has provided a more detailed understanding of the health of the work environment and perceptions of new nurses during the transition to practice.

The Effect of Training and Development on Employee Productivity in the Digital Age

This research explores the impact of training and development initiatives on employee productivity in the digital age within start-up companies in Indonesia through a quantitative analysis. A diverse sample of 500 employees from various sectors provided valuable insights. The findings revealed a positive correlation between the effectiveness of training programs and employee productivity, emphasizing the unique dynamics of training in start-ups. The study also uncovered the moderating effect of employee engagement and the mediating role of the perceived work environment. These results contribute to the understanding of how strategic investments in training and development can foster a skilled and productive workforce in the dynamic landscape of Indonesian start-ups.

Can Job Demands and Job Resources Predict Bystander Behaviour in Workplace Bullying? A Longitudinal Study

AbstractBystanders can affect workplace bullying by engaging in active or passive behaviours. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding how perceived work environment factors relate to bystander behaviour. The study aim was to investigate how job demands, and job resources are associated with bystander behaviour in workplace bullying. An online questionnaire was distributed to a sample of health care workers at two time points. Longitudinal data were obtained from 1144 respondents. Cross-lagged panel models were used to investigate associations between job demands, job resources, and bystander behaviours over time. The results showed that social support was positively related to active behaviours, whereas influence at work was negatively related to both active and passive behaviours. Perceived illegitimate tasks were negatively related to active and positively related to passive behaviours, whereas emotional demands had an unanticipated opposite pattern of relationships. The findings provide new information about how factors in the organisational and social work environment are associated with active and passive bystander behaviours in workplace bullying. Specifically, the results expand current understanding of workplace bullying by relating bystander behaviour to the organisational context.

Perceived Work Environment, Educational Status, Staffing Levels, and Work Outcomes in Long-Term Care Settings During COVID-19.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has severely affected older residents in long-term care (LTC) settings. However, care workers' perceptions of their work environment and potential impact on their work outcomes during the pandemic is not well known. This study examined associations between care staff's perceived work environment, educational status, and facility staffing levels and work outcomes of care staff in LTC settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study employed a cross-sectional, observational, correlational design. A total of 207 care staff were conveniently recruited from 30 LTC settings in South Korea. The perceived work environment, educational status of care staff, and facility staffing levels (ie, beds-to-registered nurse [RN] and beds-to-nursing assistant [NA] or care worker ratios), as well as their work outcomes (ie, general and COVID-19 specific outcomes) were collected using questionnaires. Multivariable binary logistic regressions were conducted, controlling for the characteristics of care staff (ie, age, sex, occupation, and career length) and facilities (ie, location, bed size, ownership, and residents' disease and care profiles). Approximately 45% of the participants were either NAs or care workers, and 38% were RNs. More than half (53.14%) perceived their work environment to be good. LTC staff who perceived their work environment to be poor were more likely to be dissatisfied with their work [odds ratio (OR) 20.88), experience high burnout (OR 8.63), intend to leave the facility within a year (OR 5.00), and experience increased overtime work (OR 3.58) and work-life imbalance (OR 1.93) due to COVID-19. LTC work environments should be improved and government-led initiatives for ensuring such improvements should be implemented to enable a better response to future public health crises and maintain the quality of care for and safety of residents in LTC settings.

The mediating roles of workplace support and ethical work environment in associations between leadership and moral distress: a longitudinal study of Canadian health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in heightened moral distress among health care workers (HCWs) worldwide. Past research has shown that effective leadership may mitigate potential for the development of moral distress. However, no research to date has considered the mechanisms by which leadership might have an influence on moral distress. We sought to evaluate longitudinally whether Canadian HCWs' perceptions of workplace support and ethical work environment would mediate associations between leadership and moral distress. A total of 239 French- and English-speaking Canadian HCWs employed during the COVID-19 pandemic were recruited to participate in a longitudinal online survey. Participants completed measures of organizational and supervisory leadership at baseline and follow-up assessments of workplace support, perceptions of an ethical work environment, and moral distress. Associations between both organizational and supervisory leadership and moral distress were fully mediated by workplace supports and perceptions of an ethical work environment. To ensure HCW well-being and quality of care, it is important to ensure that HCWs are provided with adequate workplace supports, including manageable work hours, social support, and recognition for efforts, as well as an ethical workplace environment.

Does gender affect experiences in the operating room for surgeons and anesthesiologists at a large academic center?

BackgroundAlthough the number of women medical trainees has increased in recent years, they remain a minority of the academic workforce. Gender-based implicit biases may lead to deleterious effects on surgical workforce retention and productivity. MethodsAll 440 attending surgeons and anesthesiologists employed at our institution were invited to complete a survey regarding perceptions of the perioperative work environment and resources. Odds ratios for dichotomous variables were calculated using logistic regressions, and for trichotomous variables, polytomous regressions. Results243 participants (55.2%) provided complete survey responses. Relative to men, women faculty reported a greater need to prove themselves to staff; less respect and fewer resources and opportunities; more frequent assumptions about their capabilities; and a greater need to adjust their demeanor to connect with their team (p ​< ​0.05). ConclusionPerceived gender bias remains present in the perioperative environment. We need greater efforts to address barriers and create an equitable work environment.

Analysis of the Navy's Work Stress Factors in terms of Perception of the Physical Work Environment

The stress experienced by Navy members is likely to be directly proportional to the conditions of their work environment which requires them to be firm, hard, and full of pressure that causes stress to Navy members which causes Navy members to be easily provoked by their emotions. This is due to the perception that Navy members are selected humans who can overcome any condition but in fact when faced with a poor physical environment, it will affect the performance of Navy members so that there is an expectation of individual survival of the work environment that is not directly proportional to the reality where Navy members are people who are easily exposed to stress if the physical work environment is negativeThe purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the perception of the physical work environment and work stress in members of the Navy in the Juanda area, Surabaya. The study population was 60 people with purposive sampling techniques. The criteria used are members of the Navy who are married and work in the Surabaya area. The data collection method uses a scale of perception of the physical work environment and a scale of work stress. Data analysis using Pearson's Product Moment analysis technique. The results of data analysis on the sample subjects found that the correlation test of the variable perception of the physical work environment with work stress was =-0.569 where the results stated &lt; 0.05 where the results stated &lt; from 0.05 so that it shows that there is a negative correlation between the perception of the physical work environment and work stress in Navy members, so that the higher the perception of the work environment, the lower the work stress, also vice versa when Navy members have a low perception of the work environment, it will have an impact on high work stress.Anggota TNI dalam dekade ini mengalami peningkatan dalam stres. Hal tersebut disebabkan oleh persepsi mengenai anggota TNI AL adalah manusia pilihan yang bisa mengatasi kondisi apapun tapi kenyataannya ketika dihadapkan dengan lingkungan fisik yang kurang baik, maka akan mempengaruhi kinerja anggota TNI AL sehingga terjadi harapan akan keberlangsungan hidup individu terhadap lingkungan kerja yang tidak berbanding lurus dengan realita dimana anggota TNI AL adalah orang yang mudah untuk terpapar stres jika lingkungan kerja fisiknya negatif. Populasi penelitian berjumlah 60 orang dengan teknik sampling purposive sampling. Kriteria yang digunakan adalah anggota TNI AL yang sudah menikah dan bekerja di wilayah Surabaya. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan skala persepsi lingkungan kerja fisik dan skala stres kerja. Analisis data menggunakan teknik analisis Product Moment Pearson. Hasil analisis data pada subjek sampel diketahui bahwa uji korelasi variabel persepsi lingkungan kerja fisik dengan stres kerja sebesar =-0,569 dimana hasil yang dikemukakan &lt; dari 0,05 sehingga hal itu menunjukkan bahwa adanya korelasi yang sifatnya negatif antara persepsi lingkungan kerja fisik dengan stres kerja pada anggota TNI AL, sehingga semakin tinggi persepsi lingkungan kerja maka semakin rendah stres kerja, juga sebaliknya ketika anggota TNI AL memiliki persepsi lingkungan kerja yang rendah maka akan berdampak pada stres kerja yang tinggi.

Depressive Symptoms and Associated Factors among Employees in Public Utility Places of Zhejiang Province, China

Depression has been known to adversely influence the working performance of employees. However, compared with physical health, few studies have reported the prevalence of depressive symptoms among employees in workplaces. This study aimed to investigate the current situation and the relationships among the prevalence of depressive symptoms, physical health, social–psychological factors, working conditions, environmental perception, and workplace performance of employees in public utility places in Zhejiang Province, China. A cross-sectional study was conducted during the fourth quarter of 2019. A total of 1232 individuals responded to the survey. Six types of information—sociodemographic characteristics, working conditions, psychosocial factors, four groups of physical symptoms, working performance, and depressive symptoms—were collected. Logistic regression analysis was performed. The survey results showed that the prevalence of depressive symptoms among employees in public utility places in Zhejiang Province was 17.9%. Perceptions of a poor work environment, poor interpersonal relationships, an unfulfilling life, and frequent ocular and general uncomfortable symptoms were associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms. Strong work ability, fulfilment in life, and taking the initiative to wear or use protective equipment at work were associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms. The results of this study will provide valuable guidance for the scientific intervention for depressive symptoms among public utility place employees in the future.
